Abstract
A possibility of electron density measurements with heavy ion beam probes (HIBPs) has been demonstrated, along with their capability to measure the potential and magnetic field. A method has been proposed to reconstruct the electron density profile [A. Fujisawa et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 74, 3335 (2003)]. In the method, the profile of secondary beam currents is converted into a local density profile by taking into account local brightness and so-called path integral effects which mean the effect of beam attenuation along the beam orbit. Here the article presents the HIBP measurement of the electron density profile after the proposed method was first applied on the real experimental data of compact helical system plasmas. In the real application, the hollow density and the peaked profiles are successfully obtained with sufficiently high temporal resolution (a few ms), in accordance with the electron density profile measured with Thomson scattering for electron cyclotron resonance heating and neutral beam injection plasmas.

Abstract
Shellfish aquaculture in Ofunato Bay, Northeast Japan, was seriously damaged by a tsunami generated by the Great East Japan Earthquake, March 11th, 2011, accompanied by paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) outbreaks caused by Alexandrium tamarense (Dinophyceae). To understand longer future trends of PSP, an investigation was made of the historical occurrence and causes of Alexandrium outbreaks after the tsunami. Vertical distributions of Alexandrium cysts in two sediment-cores from Ofunato Bay revealed that the sediments above ca. 25 cm were eroded, re-suspended and re-deposited, and they included unusually abundant Alexandrium cysts. This abundance of cysts was due to re-deposition of older sediments by the tsunami. The first Ofunato Bay PSP incident was in 1961 after the Chilean Earthquake tsunami and was probably caused by similar unusual blooms of Alexandrium germinated from older sediments as the Great East Japan tsunami, together with nutrient enrichment because of population increase at the start of shellfish aquaculture.

Abstract
SummaryObjectives: The aim of this study is to present a method of assessing psychological tension that is optimized to every individual on the basis of the heart rate variability (HRV) data which, to eliminate the influence of the inter-individual variability, are measured in a long time period during daily life.Methods: HRV and body accelerations were recorded from nine normal subjects for two months of normal daily life. Fourteen HRV indices were calculated with the HRV data at 512 seconds prior to the time of every mental tension level report. Data to be analyzed were limited to those with body accelerations of 30 mG (0.294 m/s2) and lower. Further, the differences from the reference values in the same time zone were calculated with both the mental tension score (Δtension) and HRV index values (ΔHRVI). The multiple linear regression model that estimates Δtension from the scores for principal components of ΔHRVI were then constructed for each individual. The data were divided into training data set and test data set in accordance with the twofold cross validation method. Multiple linear regression coefficients were determined using the training data set, and with the optimized model its generalization capability was checked using the test data set.Results: The subjects’ mean Pearson correlation coefficient was 0.52 with the training data set and 0.40 with the test data set. The subjects’ mean coefficient of determination was 0.28 with the training data set and 0.11 with the test data set.Conclusion: We proposed a method of assessing psychological tension that is optimized to every individual based on HRV data measured over a long period of daily life.

Abstract
Strains of a dinoflagellate from the Salton Sea, previously identified as Protoceratium reticulatum and yessotoxin producing, have been reexamined morphologically and genetically and Pentaplacodinium saltonense n. gen. et sp. is erected to accommodate this species. Pentaplacodinium saltonense differs from Protoceratium reticulatum (Claparède et Lachmann 1859) Bütschli 1885 in the number of precingular plates (five vs. six), cingular displacement (two widths vs. one), and distinct cyst morphology. Incubation experiments (excystment and encystment) show that the resting cyst of Pentaplacodinium saltonense is morphologically most similar to the cyst-defined species Operculodinium israelianum (Rossignol, 1962) Wall (1967) and O. psilatum Wall (1967). Collections of comparative material from around the globe (including Protoceratium reticulatum and the genus Ceratocorys) and single cell PCR were used to clarify molecular phylogenies. Variable regions in the LSU (three new sequences), SSU (12 new sequences) and intergenic ITS 1-2 (14 new sequences) were obtained. These show that Pentaplacodinium saltonense and Protoceratium reticulatum form two distinct clades. Pentaplacodinium saltonense forms a monophyletic clade with several unidentified strains from Malaysia. LSU and SSU rDNA sequences of three species of Ceratocorys (C. armata, C. gourreti, C. horrida) from the Mediterranean and several other unidentified strains from Malaysia form a well-supported sister clade. The unique phylogenetic position of an unidentified strain from Hawaii is also documented and requires further examination. In addition, based on the V9 SSU topology (bootstrap values >80%), specimens from Elands Bay (South Africa), originally described as Gonyaulax grindleyi by Reinecke (1967), cluster with Protoceratium reticulatum. The known range of Pentaplacodinium saltonense is tropical to subtropical, and its cyst is recorded as a fossil in upper Cenozoic sediments. Protoceratium reticulatum and Pentaplacodinium saltonense seem to inhabit different niches: motile stages of these dinoflagellates have not been found in the same plankton sample.

Abstract
Background Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) constitutes a huge burden for patients and studies show that IBD patients have difficulties remaining in employment. Because there is no data about the unemployment of IBD patients in Japan. Methods We surveyed a representative sample of 1068 Japanese IBD patients regarding their employment status. Results We found that the labor force participation rate is lower and unemployment higher for patients with IBD compared to the general population. Factors associated with unemployment in the IBD sample are older age, female gender, and the prevalence of depression. Discussion IBD constitutes a high burden for patients in Japan regarding employment outcome.

Abstract
Ice-shelf channels are long curvilinear tracts of thin ice found on Antarctic ice shelves. Many of them originate near the grounding line, but their formation mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here we use ice-penetrating radar data from Roi Baudouin Ice Shelf, East Antarctica, to infer that the morphology of several ice-shelf channels is seeded upstream of the grounding line by large basal obstacles indenting the ice from below. We interpret each obstacle as an esker ridge formed from sediments deposited by subglacial water conduits, and calculate that the eskers' size grows towards the grounding line where deposition rates are maximum. Relict features on the shelf indicate that these linked systems of subglacial conduits and ice-shelf channels have been changing over the past few centuries. Because ice-shelf channels are loci where intense melting occurs to thin an ice shelf, these findings expose a novel link between subglacial drainage, sedimentation and ice-shelf stability.

Abstract
Several methodologies have been employed to understand the kinetics of induced autophagic degradation in plants, but most of them are not capable of distinguishing the autophagic cargo proteins before and after induction of autophagy in cells. Here, we designed a mass photoconverter that allowed us to simultaneously monitor protein synthesis and degradation in tobacco BY-2 cells using a photoconvertible fluorescence marker protein, Kikume Green Red (KikGR). An example of a new protocol for the analysis of autophagy progression using a fusion protein of cytochrome b5 and KikGR under phosphate starvation is described. The other example described is the analysis of the proliferation of Golgi apparatus in tobacco BY-2 cells using the fusion protein of a prolyl 4-hydroxylase NtP4H1.1 and monomeric KikGR. A detailed protocol on key analysis, as well as tips and notes for experiments using KikGR proteins, are described.

Abstract
Background It is unknown whether cerebral oxygenation in patients with carotid artery stenosis (CAS) undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) differs from that in patients without CAS. Thus, the effect of the presence of CAS ≥ 50 % on cerebral oxygenation during off-pump CABG in adult patients was evaluated retrospectively. Methods Eleven patients with CAS ≥ 50 % and 14 patients without CAS ≥ 50 % were enrolled. Regional cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (rSO2) was quantified using near-infrared spectroscopy. Mean arterial pressure, cardiac index, central venous pressure (CVP), and rSO2 at specific points were collected, and significant changes in each parameter were detected using repeated analysis of variance. Mean rSO2 and minimum rSO2 during anastomosis were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) with 95 % confidence interval (CI) for cerebral desaturation (a decrease in rSO2 ≥ 10 % from preoperative value). Results Two patients with CAS ≥ 50 % who received complete carotid artery stenting preoperatively were excluded from the analyses. In both patients with and without CAS, a decrease in rSO2 and cardiac index and an increase in CVP were observed during anastomosis. Mean (SD) maximum decrease in rSO2 from preoperative value was 9.2 (12.7) % on the left side and 8.1 (11.7) % on the right side in patients with CAS ≥ 50 %, and 13.5 (11.3) % on the left side and 16.1 (9.8) % on the right side in patients without CAS ≥ 50 % (p = 0.316). Neurological complications were not identified in both patients with and without CAS ≥ 50 %. In multiple logistic regression analysis, CAS ≥ 50 % was not associated with an increased risk of cerebral desaturation (OR 0.160, 95 % CI 0.036–0.707, p = 0.016), and rSO2 decreased with decreasing cardiac index < 2.0 l/min/m2 (OR 3.287, 95 % CI 2.218–5.076, p < 0.001). Conclusions CAS ≥ 50 % was not an independent risk factor of cerebral desaturation during off-pump CABG. Our results suggest that maintaining cardiac output can prevent a decrease in cerebral oxygenation in both patients with and without CAS ≥ 50 %.

Abstract
Here, we established the cyst-motile stage relation-ship for Spiniferites pachydermus through incubation of cysts with a characteristically microreticulate/perforate surface isolated from Izmir Bay in the eastern Aegean Sea of the eastern Mediterranean. The morphology of the motile stage was similar to Gonyaulax spinifera but had a different size, overhang, displacement and reticulations. Based on the distinct morphology of the cyst and morphological differences in motile cells, we assigned S. pachydermus from Izmir Bay to the new species Gonyaulax ellegaardiae. We elucidate the phylogenetic relationship of G. ellegaardiae through large and small subunit ribosomal DNA and show that it forms a clade with other species that belong to the G. spinifera complex.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Villitis of unknown etiology (VUE) is associated with fetal growth restriction. However, the underlying mechanisms of villous injury in placentas with VUE are still largely unknown. We aimed to verify whether apoptosis-related factors are increased in VUE placentas. Furthermore, we determined apoptosis of villous cells. METHODS Six placentas with VUE and 3 control placentas were stained using immunohistochemistry with antibodies for CD3, CD4, CD8, CD68, CD163, perforin, granzyme B, granzyme K, and C5b-9. TUNEL assay analysis was also performed with these placentas. The percentage of cells that stained positive, CD163/CD68 ratio, percentage of C5b-9 positive area, and apoptosis index were quantified and compared between the inflammatory lesions of the VUE placentas, non-VUE inflammatory lesions of the VUE placentas, and control placentas. RESULTS The percentages of CD3, CD4, CD8 CD68, CD163, perforin, and granzyme B positive cells were significantly higher in the inflammatory lesions of the VUE placentas (p < 0.05). The intravillous CD163/CD68 ratio was higher in the inflammatory lesions compared with the non-inflammatory lesion of the VUE placentas (p < 0.05). The percentage of granzyme K-positive cells was not significantly different between the groups. C5b-9 deposition was higher in the inflammatory lesions of the VUE placentas (p < 0.05). TUNEL-positive cells were significantly higher in the inflammatory lesions of the VUE placentas (p < 0.05). DISCUSSION To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to assess villous injury, especially from a viewpoint of villous apoptosis in VUE placentas. An activated perforin/granzyme pathway and C5b-9 are suggested as possible mechanisms of apoptosis.

Abstract
This study provides the first morphological features of resting cysts of Cochlodinium polykrikoides collected from Korean coastal sediments. Evidence for the existence of resting cysts of C. polykrikoides is based on the morphological and molecular phylogenetic data of the germinated cells and a resting cyst. The morphology of the resting cysts differed from that reported previously in sediments and culture experiments. The distinct feature is that the cyst body was covered by the reticulate ornaments and spines.
