Abstract
The risk for neuropsychiatric illnesses has a strong sex bias, and for major depressive disorder (MDD), females show a more than 2-fold greater risk compared to males. Such mood disorders are commonly associated with a dysregulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Thus, sex differences in the incidence of MDD may be related with the levels of gonadal steroid hormone in adulthood or during early development as well as with the sex differences in HPA axis function. In rodents, organizational and activational effects of gonadal steroid hormones have been described for the regulation of HPA axis function and, if consistent with humans, this may underlie the increased risk of mood disorders in women. Other developmental factors, such as prenatal stress and prenatal overexposure to glucocorticoids can also impact behaviors and neuroendocrine responses to stress in adulthood and these effects are also reported to occur with sex differences. Similarly, in humans, the clinical benefits of antidepressants are associated with the normalization of the dysregulated HPA axis, and genetic polymorphisms have been found in some genes involved in controlling the stress response. This review examines some potential factors contributing to the sex difference in the risk of affective disorders with a focus on adrenal and gonadal hormones as potential modulators. Genetic and environmental factors that contribute to individual risk for affective disorders are also described. Ultimately, future treatment strategies for depression should consider all of these biological elements in their design.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Anticoagulant effect of LMWHs is monitored by anti-factor Xa (anti-FXa) activity assay. Since this test has several limitations, the aim of this study was to explore the activity of two LMWHs by thrombin generation assay (TG, which presents an overall picture of hemostatic balance) and its correlation with their anti-FXa activity. METHODS In an open-label, randomized cross-over study, 40 mg of two enoxaparins, the original branded formulation (R) and another one, also marketed in Argentina (T), were daily injected subcutaneously, for 7 days, to 20 healthy volunteers, with a 7-day washout interval. Blood samples were collected before treatment and 180 minutes after the injection on days 3 and 7. TG in platelet-poor plasma activated with tissue factor was assessed by lag time (LT), time to peak (TTP), peak (PTG), and endogenous thrombin potential (ETP). Anti-FXa and anti-FIIa activities, free tissue factor pathway inhibitor (free TFPI), tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA), plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1), and euglobulin lysis time (ELT) were also assayed. RESULTS The mean (SD) anti-FXa (UI/ml) for T and R increased on days 3 and 7. LT and TTP were significantly prolonged by both LMWHs, with no differences between them. The mean ETP (nmol/L) for T and R at 3 and 7 days after treatment were significantly reduced when compared with basal values (p = 0.001 for all). On day 3, a significant correlation was shown between the variables describing TG and anti-FXa for T and R, without differences between them, for LT (r: 0.516 and 0486), ETP (r: 0.532 and 0.574), PEAK (r: 0.482 and 0.501), and TTP (r: 0.577 and 0.503), respectively. This correlation was also significant on day 7. Anti-FIIa activity and free TFPI increased significantly at 3 and 7 days for both LMWHs, without differences between them. R and T decreased ELT and PAI-1, but had no effect on t-PA. There were no differences between both LMWHs in routine hemostatic tests. No adverse events were reported. CONCLUSIONS Correlation between TG and anti-FXa activity was good. Both enoxaparins induced similar change of coagulation parameters, with a significant increase in fibrinolytic activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE There are few reports of Coccus nucifera (Palmae) infestation by triatomines (Hemiptera, Reduviidae, Triatominae), vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), the causal agent of American Trypanosomiasis. The aim of this study was to determine if this palm is an appropriate ecotope for Rhodnius prolixus and Triatoma maculata, the main vectors in Venezuela. METHODS Dry and green leaves, humid debris, interfoliaceus meshes and bracts from C. nucifera from north-eastern Venezuela were examined for the presence of triatomines. Samples of the intestinal content of vectors, macerated in isotonic saline solution and haemolymph were examined microscopically for the presence of Trypanosoma spp. The parasites were isolated and characterized using biological parameters and PCR. Triatomine blood meal sources were determined using ELISA. RESULTS A total of 14 palms were examined in which viable eggs of both species of vectors were found in 13 palms (92.85%). A total of 242 R. prolixus and 144 T. maculata adults were collected, of which 98% of R. prolixus and 70% of T. maculata individuals were infected by T. cruzi (TcI genotype) and 13% of R. prolixus individuals showed a mixed infection with T. rangeli, the other American trypanosome. ELISA testing for possible triatomine blood-meal sources revealed that these vectors are essentially eurytrophic and zoophilic, although R. prolixus also eventually used human blood as a nourishment source. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION The results obtained suggest that C. nucifera is an appropriate vegetal niche for these triatomine species in Venezuela. The presence of this commercial palm may represent a useful environmental bioindicator of risk for Chagas disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify the characteristics associated with human tuberculosis (TB) caused by Mycobacterium bovis and M. caprae in Spain. DESIGN Retrospective study covering all M. bovis and M. caprae isolates identified at the National Mycobacterial Reference Laboratory (NRL) from 2004 to 2007. We studied the microbiological and epidemiological characteristics of patients and performed a genetic analysis of isolates. RESULTS The study covered 110 isolates (89 M. bovis and 21 M. caprae) that accounted for respectively 1.9% and 0.3% of the M. tuberculosis complex isolates available at the NRL. Data on risk of exposure to M. bovis or to M. caprae were available in 82 (74%) of the 110 cases, with 60 (73%) registering a probable or possible risk of exposure and 22 (27%) registering no risk. Probable exposure mainly included crop and livestock farmers, and possible exposure included patients born in countries with a high prevalence of bovine TB. Spoligotyping of strains yielded 36 different patterns, with SB0121, SB0134 and SB0157 being predominant. CONCLUSIONS In Spain, cases of human TB due to M. bovis and M. caprae represent a small proportion of all TB cases, and for a high percentage of cases this is linked to occupational exposure and coming from countries endemic for bovine TB.

Abstract
Transplantation of olfactory ensheathing glial cells (OEG) may improve the outcome from spinal cord injury. Proof-of-principle studies in primates are desirable and the feasibility and efficacy of using in vitro expanded OEG should be tested. An intermediate step between the validation of rodent studies and human clinical trials is to study expanded primate OEG (POEG) xenografts in immunotolerant rodents. In this study the time course to generate purified POEG was evaluated as well as their survival, effect on damaged axons of the corticospinal and serotonergic systems, tissue sparing, and chronic locomotor recovery following transplantation. Fifty-seven nude rats underwent T9/10 spinal cord transection. Thirty-eight rats received POEG, 19 controls were injected with cell medium, and 10 received lentivirally-GFP-transfected POEG. Histological evaluation was conducted at 6 weeks, 8 weeks, 14 weeks and 23-24 weeks. Of these 57 rats, 18 were studied with 5-HT immunostaining, 16 with BDA anterograde CST labeling, and six were used for transmission electron microscopy. In grafted animals, behavioral recovery, sprouting and limited regeneration of 5-HT fibers, and increased numbers of proximal collateral processes but not regeneration of CST fibers was observed. Grafted animals had less cavitation in the spinal cord stumps than controls. Behavioral recovery peaked at three months and then declined. Five POEG-transplanted animals that had shown behavioral recovery underwent retransection and behavioral scores did not change significantly, suggesting that long tract axonal regeneration did not account for the locomotor improvement. At the ultrastructural level presumptive POEG were found to have direct contacts with astrocytes forming the glia limitans, distinct from those formed by Schwann cells. At 6 weeks GFP expression was detected in cells within the lesion site and within nerve roots but did not match the pattern of Hoechst nuclear labeling. At 3.5 months only GFP-positive debris in macrophages could be detected. Transplanted POEG support behavioral recovery via mechanisms that appear to be independent of long tract regeneration.

Abstract
The monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) HD37 and RFB4 bind to receptors on precursor B acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells. These MAbs were tested alone and in combination with chemotherapy for their anti-leukemic activity. HD37 and not RFB4 increased the in vitro cytotoxicity of daunorubicin (DNR) and vincristine (VCR) in three Pre-B ALL cell lines. HD37 alone induced apoptosis in 30% of the cells versus 2% for RFB4. The treatment of SCID/ALL mice with either chemotherapy agent minimally prolonged their mean survival time (MST) versus controls but HD37 or RFB4 plus VCR significantly extended the MST. Forty percent of the mice treated with HD37 plus VCR survived. In conclusion, chemotherapy was made more effective when combined with HD37, and less so with RFB4.

Abstract
Maps are a useful tool that permits correlation of landscapes with hotspots of parasite transmission. Here, they were used as a tool for geovisualization to evaluate variables involved in the transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi among small wild mammals in an area endemic for Chagas disease, the "Serra da Capivara" National Park (PARNA) and its surroundings in Piauí State, Northeast Brazil. The implementation of a Geographical Information System (GIS) allowed the observation that a previously noted aggregated distribution of Triatoma sordida and Triatoma brasiliensis, T. cruzi prevalence and infection pattern of small wild mammals was directly or indirectly influenced by the local relief and human action. Small mammalian species diversity was higher in mesic refugia inside the park and in its buffer zone and lower in the disturbed area by anthropic activities. Didelphis albiventris was more abundant in the areas affected by human action. Thrichomys laurentius demonstrated to be an eclectic species and a competent reservoir of T. cruzi, being infected in all study areas. Small wild mammals infected with the TCII genotype of T. cruzi were localized only in the buffer zone of PARNA while TCI infected specimens were found in both areas, inside the PARNA and its buffer zone. The impact of biodiversity loss on the transmission cycle of T. cruzi in the wild environment was discussed.

Abstract
The anti-CD19 immunotoxin (IT) (HD37-dgRTA) is effective in killing B-lineage leukemia cells and in curing severe combined immunodeficient mice with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The present study aimed to identify effective combinations of HD37-dgRTA and chemotherapeutic agents. The in-vitro cytotoxicity assays demonstrate that the combination of HD37-dgRTA and either daunorubicin or vincristine is effective. The in-vivo experiments using HD37-dgRTA with vincristine prolonged the survival of mice compared to the chemotherapeutic agent or IT (90.7 vs. 147.1 days). Also, 80% of the mice treated with IT plus vincristine were long-term survivors.

Abstract
A link between stressful life events and development or exacerbation of depression has been established via a large body of evidence. An alteration in the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in depression has also been associated with an increase in cortisol secretion. As arginine-vasopressin (AVP) plays an important role in the activation of HPA axis during stress, the present study investigated ACTH and cortisol secretory response induced by an AVP-related peptide desmopressin (ddAVP) in patients with major depression. Prior to antidepressant treatment, endocrinological parameters were evaluated and correlated with the clinical response to venlafaxine treatment, which offers a dual antidepressant action. Depressive patients with no other psychiatric pathology were evaluated with 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-D) in order to follow-up the response to venlafaxine. After 1 wk of treatment, 60% of patients reduced their initial HAM-D score to at least 25%; this group was classified as early responders. The other group (40%) started to reduce significantly their HAM-D score after 3 wk of treatment and was classified as late responders. After 6 wk of treatment both groups have reduced HAM-D score to at least 25% of the baseline score. Prior to the pharmacological treatment, both early and late responders showed salivary cortisol rhythm and urinary free cortisol (UFC) in 24-h similar to healthy subjects. However, we did observe differences in basal ACTH secretion, showing that the late responder group had higher basal ACTH than both early responders and controls. The ddAVP challenge promoted a robust secretion of ACTH only in late responders, suggesting a different sensitivity of pituitary vasopressin receptor. The differences in clinical response to venlafaxine among depressive patients seem to be related to endocrinological parameters.

Abstract
Photoplethysmography and pulse oximetry are techniques based on optical principles, which are widely used in medical practice for non-invasive monitoring. There are some processes which may affect specific organs or parts without a significant repercussion on the information provided non-invasively. Here, we report on the preliminary results obtained by transmittance photoplethysmography in pig intra-peritoneal organs along a surgical intervention, using a measurement system based on two near-infrared laser diodes. Analysis of the signals recorded at 750 nm and 850 nm in the mesentery root, mesocolon, gastric wall and aorta artery has shown the affordability of performing in situ photoplethysmography for visceral perfusion evaluation.
