Abstract
Rare copy-number variation (CNV) is an important source of risk for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). We analyzed 2,446 ASD-affected families and confirmed an excess of genic deletions and duplications in affected versus control groups (1.41-fold, p = 1.0 × 10−5) and an increase in affected subjects carrying exonic pathogenic CNVs overlapping known loci associated with dominant or X-linked ASD and intellectual disability (odds ratio = 12.62, p = 2.7 × 10−15, ∼3% of ASD subjects). Pathogenic CNVs, often showing variable expressivity, included rare de novo and inherited events at 36 loci, implicating ASD-associated genes (CHD2, HDAC4, and GDI1) previously linked to other neurodevelopmental disorders, as well as other genes such as SETD5, MIR137, and HDAC9. Consistent with hypothesized gender-specific modulators, females with ASD were more likely to have highly penetrant CNVs (p = 0.017) and were also overrepresented among subjects with fragile X syndrome protein targets (p = 0.02). Genes affected by de novo CNVs and/or loss-of-function single-nucleotide variants converged on networks related to neuronal signaling and development, synapse function, and chromatin regulation.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs) are a group of diseases caused by corticospinal tract degeneration. Mutations in 3 genes (SPG4, SPG3, and SPG31) are said to be the cause in half of the autosomal dominant HSPs (AD-HSPs). This study is a systematic review of families with HSP resulting from a population-based survey. Novel genotype-phenotype correlations were established. OBJECTIVE To describe the clinical, genetic, and epidemiological features of Portuguese AD-HSP families. DESIGN Retrospective medical record review. SETTING A population-based systematic survey of hereditary ataxias and spastic paraplegias conducted in Portugal from 1993 to 2004. PARTICIPANTS Families with AD-HSP. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Mutation detection in the most prevalent genes. RESULTS We identified 239 patients belonging to 89 AD-HSP families. The prevalence was 2.4 in 100 000. Thirty-one distinct mutations (26 in SPG4, 4 in SPG3, and 1 in SPG31) segregated in 41% of the families (33.7%, 6.2%, and 1.2% had SPG4, SPG3 and SPG31 mutations, respectively). Seven of the SPG4 mutations were novel, and 7% of all SPG4 mutations were deletions. When disease onset was before the first decade, 31% had SPG4 mutations and 27% had SPG3 mutations. In patients with SPG4 mutations, those with large deletions had the earliest disease onset, followed by those with missense, frameshift, nonsense, and alternative-splicing mutations. Rate of disease progression was not significantly different among patients with SPG3 and SPG4 mutations in a multivariate analysis. For patients with SPG4 mutations, disease progression was worst in patients with later-onset disease. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE The prevalence of AD-HSP and frequency of SPG3 and SPG4 mutations in the current study were similar to what has been described in other studies except that the frequency of SPG4 deletions was lower. In contrast, the frequency of SPG31 mutations in the current study was rare compared with other studies. The most interesting aspects of this study are that even in patients with early-onset disease the probability of finding a SPG4 mutation was higher than for patients with SPG3 mutations; there was no difference in disease progression with genotype but an association with the age at onset; 7 new SPG4 mutations were identified; and for the first time, to our knowledge, the nature of the SPG4 mutations was found to predict the age at onset.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Residual neuromuscular block is an important postoperative complication associated to the use of neuromuscular blocking drugs. The purpose of this study was to access the incidence of residual neuromuscular block in a post-anesthesia care unit and to evaluate its association with critical respiratory events. MATERIAL AND METHODS Prospective cohort study was conducted in a Post Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU) for a period of 3 weeks. Two hundred two adult patients who submitted to scheduled non-cardiac and non-intracranial surgery were eligible to the study. The primary outcome variable was residual neuromuscular block after arrival to PACU that was defined as train-of-four ratio <0.9 and objectively quantified using acceleromyography. Demographic data, perioperative variables, lengths of hospital and recovery room stay and critical respiratory events were recorded. Inadequate emergence was classified in its different forms according to the Richmond agitation and sedation scale 10 min after admission to the recovery room. RESULTS Residual neuromuscular block incidence in the post-anesthesia care unit was 29.7% (95% confidence interval: 23.4, 36.1). Patients with residual neuromuscular block had more frequently overall critical respiratory events (51% versus 16%, P<0.001), airway obstruction (10% versus 2%, P=0.029), mild-moderate hypoxemia (23% versus 4%, P<0.001), severe hypoxemia (7% versus 1%, P=0.033), respiratory failure (8% versus 1%, P=0.031), inability to breathe deeply (38% versus 12%, P<0.001) and muscular weakness (16% versus 1%, P<0.001). Residual neuromuscular block was more common after high-risk surgery (53% versus 33%, P=0.011) and was more often associated with post-operative hypoactive emergence as defined by the Richmond Agitation and Sedation Scale (21% versus 6%, P=0.001). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that residual neuromuscular block is common in the PACU and is associated with more frequent critical respiratory events.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the accuracy of PET/CT for the diagnostic evaluation of patients presenting cervical node metastasis of suspected unknown primary; furthermore to understand its relative clinical utility and relevance when compared to classic endoscopic investigation approach. MATERIALS & METHODS A retrospective study was pursued, collecting information from clinical files of all patients who presented to the Portuguese Institute of Oncology - Oporto, from January 2005 to December 2011, with cervical node metastases whose primary hadn't been found, despite clinical examination and standard imaging (CT scan or MRI) and therefore were submitted to a PET/CT. Among those presenting with non-supraclavicular metastasis patients were subsequently analyzed according to: histopathology; those who performed examination under anaesthesia (EUA) for biopsies either before of after PET/CT. RESULTS Eighty nine patients were included in the study. Detection rate was 32.6% with no statistically difference between those with supraclavicular metastases and those with metastases in higher cervical levels (p = 0.24). In this last group (n = 76), 43% patients had had PET/CT and an endoscopy associated with biopsies of the upper aerodigestive tract in different orders, to complete diagnostic workup in cases where the first performed was inconclusive. No statistically difference was found between these two methods (p = 0.25). Most of noticed false negatives were microscopic lesions located deep in the palatine tonsils. CONCLUSIONS PET/CT showed to be an useful tool when searching for primary tumours whether metastasis were supraclavicular or located in higher levels of the neck. Despite its good accuracy and detection of tumours previously undetected by EUA with biopsies (missed mainly due to sampling error), up-front negative scan shouldn't preclude performing endoscopies. Being evident that both tools are helpful. It was not possible in this study to find any evidence that could show which one of these two exams should be performed first.

Abstract
Human fibroblast cells must overcome both the M1 and the M2 stages of cellular senescence to immortalize, at which point cells almost always express telomerase activity. The human papillomavirus (HPV) oncoproteins, HPV-16 E6 and E7, can block the progression to senescence in fibroblasts by associations with p53 and pRb, respectively. Human mammary epithelial (HME) cells require only HPV-16 E6 to bypass M1, suggesting that pRb may not have a direct role in HME cells senescence. In the present report, we show that only wild-type HPV-16 E6 allows complete degradation of p53, immortalization and reactivation of telomerase activity in HME cells. These results suggest that the ability of HPV-16 wild-type and mutant E6 proteins to degrade p53 in intact HME cells and keratinocytes does not completely correlate with their ability to degrade p53 in a cell-free system. This discrepancy between in vitro and in vivo p53 degradation may be biologically significant and may provide insight into the susceptibility of certain human cells and tissues for reactivation of telomerase and immortalization.

Abstract
The two-hybrid system was used to detect interactions in vivo between HPV E7 and three 'Rb-like proteins', pRb, p107 and p130. The association between pE7 and pRb parallel the oncogenic potential of the specific HPV types. In contrast, the interaction between pE7 and p107 or p130 differ. While the HPV 16 E7 protein associates with the 'Rb-like' proteins strongly, both HPV 18 and 6b E7 proteins bind more weakly. We tested several HPV 6 E7 mutants carrying single amino acid mutations. Substitution of the glycine at position 22 with an aspartate was the only mutation capable of increasing the ability of HPV 6 E7 protein to bind pRb. However, association with p107 and p130 by the HPV 6 E7 protein was also increased by mutation of the arginine at position 4 with an aspartate. These data suggest that pRb, p107 and p130 interact with similar but non-identical domains of pE7. In addition, we used amphotropic retroviruses encoding the HPV 18 E6 and the different E7 genes to analyze their immortalizing activity. The wild-type HPV Is and 16 E7 genes complemented the HPV 18 E6 gene to immortalize human keratinocytes. In comparison, none of the cells infected with HPV 6 E7, wildtype or mutant- encoding retroviruses, became immortal. Thus, our data suggest that HPV 6 E7 lacks a property independent of pRb-association which is required for immortalization of human keratinocytes.

Abstract
Echinoderms possess unique connective tissues, called mutable collagenous tissues (MCTs), which undergo nervously mediated, drastic and reversible or irreversible changes in their mechanical properties. Connective tissue mutability influences all aspects of echinoderm biology and is a key-factor in the ecological success of the phylum. Due to their sensitivity to endogenous or exogenous agents, MCTs may be targets for a number of common pollutants, with potentially drastic effects on vital functions. Besides its ecological relevance, MCT represents a topic with relevance to several applied fields. A promising research route looks at MCTs as a source of inspiration for the development of novel biomaterials. This contribution presents a review of MCT biology, which incorporates recent ultrastructural, biomolecular and biochemical analyses carried out in a biotechnological context.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Silent Sinus Syndrome (SSS) is a rare pathology, characterized by retraction of the maxillary sinus walls, leading to enophthalmos, sometimes diplopia and midfacial depression. It is usually not associated with sinonasal symptoms. Sinus ventilation and drainage stops its progression, but usually cannot reverse the process. This empiric treatment supports the Hypoventilation Theory that would explain the pathogenesis of this disorder. MATERIALS & METHODS We describe two cases of SSS. A 65 year-old-man complaining of enophthalmos with an insidious onset whose CT-Scan confirmed SSS. After he was submitted to drainage surgery, the ocular asymmetry showed slight improvement. The second case describes a 34 year-old-woman with a sudden onset enophthalmos associated with diplopia, in only 5 days. She didn't have nasal or sinus related symptoms. CT-scan revealed SSS due to maxillary and ethmoidal sinus. Early endoscopic surgery enabled reversal of enophthalmos and correction of diplopia.

Abstract
SLC26A2-related dysplasias encompass a spectrum of diseases: from lethal achondrogenesis type 1B (ACG1B; MIM #600972) and atelosteogenesis type 2 (AO2; MIM #256050) to classical diastrophic dysplasia (cDTD; MIM #222600) and recessive multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (rMED; MIM #226900). This study aimed at characterizing clinically, radiologically and molecularly 14 patients affected by non-lethal SLC26A2-related dysplasias and at evaluating genotype-phenotype correlation. Phenotypically, eight patients were classified as cDTD, four patients as rMED and two patients had an intermediate phenotype (mild DTD - mDTD, previously 'DTD variant'). The Arg279Trp mutation was present in all patients, either in homozygosity (resulting in rMED) or in compound heterozygosity with the known severe alleles Arg178Ter or Asn425Asp (resulting in DTD) or with the mutation c.727-1G>C (causing mDTD). The 'Finnish mutation', c.-26+2T>C, and the p.Cys653Ser, both frequent mutations in non-Portuguese populations, were not identified in any of the patients of our cohort and are probably very rare in the Portuguese population. A targeted mutation analysis for p.Arg279Trp and p.Arg178Ter in the Portuguese population allows the identification of approximately 90% of the pathogenic alleles.

Abstract
We report on a female patient who presented failure to thrive, laryngotracheomalacia, conductive deafness and facial dysmorphisms. A skeletal survey revealed thickening of the cranial vault, linear striations in the diametaphyses of all long bones and fan-like striations of the iliac bones. CT scan of the temporal bone showed thickening of the cranial base, sclerotic mastoids, abnormal ossicular fixation and stenosis of the otic foramina. The radiological findings led to the diagnosis of Osteopathia Striata with Cranial Sclerosis. A mutation in WTX gene confirmed the clinical and radiological diagnosis of Osteopathia Striata with Cranial Sclerosis in this patient and allowed proper genetic counseling and providing prenatal diagnosis.

Abstract
Polyandry has the potential to affect the distribution of phenotypes and to shape the direction of sexual selection. Here, we explore this potential using Trinidadian guppies as a model system and ask whether polyandry leads to directional and/or diversifying selection of male phenotypic traits. In this study, we compare the phenotypic diversity of offspring from multiply and singly sired broods. To quantify phenotypic diversity, we first combine phenotypic traits using multivariate methods, and then take the dispersion of individuals in multivariate space as our measure of diversity. We show that, when each trait is examined separately, polyandry generates offspring with a higher proportion of bright coloration, indicating directional selection. However, our multivariate approach reveals that this directionality is accompanied by an increase in phenotypic diversity. These results suggest that polyandry (i) selects for the production of sons with the preferred brighter colour phenotypes whereas (ii) enhancing the diversity of male sexual traits. Promoting phenotypic diversity may be advantageous in coping with environmental and reproductive variability by increasing long-term fitness.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Using Portuguese hospital registers (2000-2002) we calculated age-standardized incidence rates of hip fractures. Spatial clusters of high incidence rates were found, with annual averages (per 100,000 inhabitants) varying from 154.4 to 572.2 and 77.3 to 231.5 for women and men, respectively. Geographic inequalities in the occurrence of hip fractures were also found. INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to identify spatial patterns in the incidence of hip fracture in Portugal during the period 2000 to 2002. METHODS From the National Hospital Discharge Register, admissions of patients (50 years of age or more) with low-energy hip fracture were selected. Age-standardized incidence rates in relation to the municipality of the patients' place of residence were calculated. Empirical Bayes estimators were used to smooth the local risk and spatial statistics methods were used to identify spatial clusters. RESULTS Of 25,634 hip fractures in individuals aged 50 years or more caused by low or moderate impact, 19,759 occurred in women (age, mean+/-SD, 80.6+/-8.6 years) and 5,875 in men (age 77.7+/-10.0 years). Incidence rates increased exponentially with age, being higher in women nation-wide (female to male ratio from 1.5 to 5.1). Significant geographic differences were found: the incidence rates (95% CI) varied from 154.4 (153.6-155.3) to 572.2 (569.5-575.0) in women and 77.3 (76.64-78.05) to 231.5 (229.9-233.0) in men per 100,000 inhabitants. Spatial autocorrelation values (Moran index) were 0.56 and 0.45 for women and men, respectively. CONCLUSION Spatial clusters (p<0.0001) of high incidences were identified. Geographic differences in incidence rates were about threefold. Some regions had incidence rates as high as some north European countries. The geographic inequalities could be due to environmental or socioeconomic factors, but further investigation needs to be done to confirm this hypothesis.

Abstract
Bioabsorbable materials are of great interest for bone regeneration applications, since they are able to degrade gradually as new tissue is formed. In this work, a fully biodegradable composite material containing polylactic acid (PLA) and calcium phosphate (CaP) soluble glass particles has been characterized in terms of surface properties and cell response. Cell cultures were performed in direct contact with the materials and also with their extracts, and were evaluated using the MTT assay, alkaline phosphatase activity, and osteocalcin measurements. The CaP glass and PLA were used as reference materials. No significant differences were observed in cell proliferation with the extracts containing the degradation by-products of the three materials studied. A relation between the materials wettability and the material-cell interactions at the initial stages of contact was observed. The most hydrophilic material (CaP glass) presented the highest cell adhesion values as well as an earlier differentiation, followed by the PLA/glass material. The incorporation of glass particles into the PLA matrix increased surface roughness. SEM images showed that the heterogeneity of the composite material induced morphological changes in the cells cytoskeleton.

Abstract
Due to the scarcity of giant pandas, there are few descriptions of their morphology and even fewer of their microscopic anatomy and the ultrastructure of their organs. In this study of the complete tongue of an adult male giant panda, we describe the morphology of its lingual surface, the different types of papillae, their characteristics and topographic distribution. It was seen that there are four main types of lingual papillae: filiform, conical, fungiform and vallate. There was no sign of foliate papillae, tuberculum intermolare or sublingua. Papilla distribution was not limited to the dorsum of the tongue, but was also seen on the anterior and ventral surfaces of the tongue. In the anterior third of the midline there is a smooth area with no papillae at all. Morphology of the microgrooves and pores is similar to that observed in other mammals. The papillae share characteristics encountered in Carnivora and herbivorous species of mammals. A narrow bamboo-based diet and specialized manner of eating have together resulted in modification of the tongue of a carnivoran, giving it some characteristics typical of an herbivore.

Abstract
12506 Background: The epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM), also known as epithelial protein 2 (EGP-2) or 17–1A antigen, is a trans-membrane protein expressed on the surfaces of most carcinomas, including those of pancreatic, colorectal, prostate, breast, kidney, lung, and ovarian origins. Moderate affinity antibodies (Abs) such as 17–1A (Kd ∼ 10−7 nM) have been safe in humans albeit with limited clinical efficacy. Attempts to improve clinical efficacy by enhancing antigen affinity (Kd ∼ 10−9 nM) have led to serious clinical toxicity, including pancreatitis. These observations raise the question of whether a moderate affinity Ab with enhanced effector function will be both safe and clinically efficacious. Methods: We applied our proprietary XmAb™ technologies to humanize the 17–1A variable domain and engineer a human IgG1 Fc domain to increase affinity for the activating receptor FcγRIIIa. Ab binding to Ep-CAM or to Fc receptors was tested with Biacore and/or AlphaScreen binding assays. In vitro cytotoxic activity against representative cancer cell lines was measured with Antibody Dependent Cell-mediated Cytotoxicity (ADCC) assays, using human PBMC as effector cells. Results: Humanized anti-EpCAM Abs have affinity for EpCAM similar to the parent 17–1A. Affinity for the activating FcγRIIIa was increased 100-fold relative to a control Ab with an IgG1 Fc domain. As expected, these Abs exhibit dramatically enhanced ADCC against multiple cancer cell lines relative to 17–1A and IgG1 control Abs. Despite their moderate affinity for EpCAM, these novel Abs have in vitro cytotoxicity comparable to the high affinity Ab ING-1. CDC activities of these Abs were similar to chimeric 17–1A. Conclusions: We have demonstrated that antibodies with moderate affinity for EpCAM and increased FcγRIIIa affinity exhibit superior cancer cell killing via an ADCC mechanism. The humanized nature and the increased cytotoxicity of anti-EpCAM XmAb™ antibodies make them promising candidates for clinical development of a novel pan-carcinoma Ab that is superior to 17–1A. Abstract
UNLABELLED Abstract: Background and Purpose. Dural Arteriovenous Shunt (DAVS) in children include Dural sinus malformation (DSM), infantile and adult types. They are rare and seldom reported. Our purpose was to highlight the angiographic features of the DSM sub group for prognosis of clinical evolution and outcome and to lay guidelines for management. METHODS From a dedicated neurovascular data bank, there were 52 cases of arteriovenous dural shunts in children from 1985 to 2003. Of these, there were 30 patients with DSM, which we analysed the various angioarchitecture, presentation and neurological outcome. Children clinical status was evaluated and scored at admission and follow up. Results. There was an overall male dominance of 2:1. Antenatal diagnosis was obtained in 8/30 (26.7%) cases. Mean age of diagnosis was 5 months. Mean age at first consultation was 8.7 months. No patient was diagnosed during childhood. The most common clinical presentations were macrocrania 76.7%, seizures 23.3% and mental retardation 23.3%. In 14/30 (35.7%) of the patients, the therapeutic decision was to manage conservatively; in 5/14 (30.7%) with predictable favourable evolution and in 9/14 (64.3%) with irreversible poor neurological outcome. In the remaining 16/30 (53.3%) patients, endovascular treatment was performed. In 12/16 (75.0%) patients the neurological outcome was good, 3/16 (18.8%) patients had unfavourable evolution despite embolization. There was no morbidity mortality related to the procedures themselves. 1/16 (6.3%) patient was lost to follow-up. Overall 12/29 (45.8%) patients had an unfavourable neurological outcome with 11 patients dead and 1 with severe neurological deficit. In the surviving group of children, 17/18 (94.4%) have a good neurological outcome; in 10/18 (55.5%) the lesion is morphologically excluded. Conclusion. DSM is rare disease with high mortality. They usually proceed to either total or partial spontaneous thrombosis before the age of 2 thus compromising normal cerebral venous drainage. DSM away from the torcular, good cavernous sinus, cavernous capture of sylvian veins, absence of pial veins, straight sinus or superior sagital sinus (SSS) reflux and absence of jugular bulb dysmaturation represent factors of good prognosis. Such patients will highly benefit for endovascular treatment. In partial endovascular approach the aim being is to separate the brain drainage from DSM drainage. This will be achieved by the transarterial approach to the associated mural arterio-venous shunts (AVS) and by disconnecting the pial reflux by transvenous route.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this review we study drug addiction from a neurobiological point of view, emphasizing the dopamine hypothesis. This is basic to explain how a genetic feature is related with an alteration of this neurotransmitter and can connect with environmental factors to develop the addiction problem. DEVELOPMENT Toxic addiction is defined as the physical or psychophysiological dependence on a special chemical substance, whose suppression arouses deprivation symptoms in the person. The study of addiction to different drugs gives us a new approach for knowing the strengthening systems. Because even thought we do not know precisely the nervous mechanism of these substances that cause pleasure, we suppose that they are in the same place as rewarding and strengthening the behaviour mechanisms. In this way the dopamine hypothesis has been developed: in this hypothesis drug addiction is closely connected with a genetic upset of this neurotransmitter, so there is a defect in the reward system. This in turn stimulates the substance abuse that increases the brain s dopamine levels. CONCLUSION Knowing the neurobiological mechanisms involved in addiction and its relation with dopamine and the reward system can help us understand that problem and aid the rational development of treatment

Abstract
Choroid plexus tumours-carcinomas and papillomas are rare, especially in adults, and they pose some problems in their diagnosis and management. We have reviewed a series of nine cases from our institution surgically treated during the last 18 years. Their clinical charts, neuroradiological examinations, surgical technique, neuropathology and follow-up were analysed. In only one case total removal proved to be impossible, but even in cases of total removal recurrence appeared in two cases (one carcinoma and one papilloma). Morbility is especially associated with posterior fossa tumours. These rare tumours are managed surgically. They are usually associated with hydrocephalus, and it is difficult to forecast whether or not permanent CSF drainage will be required. A long-term follow-up is needed in patients with this type of tumour.

Abstract
In this study we demonstrate, for the first time, that dexamethasone and BMP-2 stimulated alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in MRC-5 fibroblasts, a cell line derived from human fetal lung. Previously we reported that the water-soluble matrix (WSM) of nacre obtained from the inner shell layer of the oyster Pinctada maxima, promoted an increase in ALP activity that was dose-dependent. In this work, we show that the effect of WSM is also time-dependent. As a comparison, the effect of WSM was also tested in bone marrow stromal cells because marrow and other bone surface-derived osteoblast stem cells have the inherent direct potential for osteogenesis. WSM promotes cell proliferation and ALP activity when tested with bone marrow cells in concentrations between 135 and 540 microg protein/mL. The effect of WSM on ALP activity of bone marrow stromal cells is similar to that obtained by dexamethasone. These results imply that MRC-5 fibroblasts respond to differentiating factors that promote osteoblastic phenotype in bone-derived cell cultures.

Abstract
The distribution of acetylcholinesterase histochemistry and choline-O-acetyltransferase immunohistochemistry in the basal forebrain was studied in newborn mice (P0) and until 60 days of postnatal life (P60). A weak acetylcholinesterase activity was found at P0 and P2 in the anterior and intermediate parts of the basal forebrain, and higher in the posterior region. The intensity of labeling, neuronal size and dendritic growth seems to increase progressively in all regions of basal forebrain from P4 to P10. The AChE+ cell count shows that in the anterior portion of the magnocellular basal nucleus the number of cells does not vary significantly from birth to the second month of postnatal life. However, in the intermediate and posterior portions of the nucleus the mean number of labeled cells increases significantly from birth to the end of the second week of postnatal life (P13). The choline-acetyltransferase immunoreactivity appears only detectable at the end of the first week (P6) as a slight immunoreaction, which increases progressively in intensity at P8, and at P10 seems to attain the same intensity of labeling found at P60. These results seem to indicate that the acetylcholinesterase could have a non-classic cholinergic role in the first stages of postnatal development, acting as a growth and cellular differentiation factor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The hydrolysis enzymes of the acetylcholine, acetylcholinesterase, and butyrylcholinesterase are involved in non-cholinergic functions such as proliferation processes and cellular adhesion. These enzymes have been found in several tumors other from brain tumors. METHODS Thirty fresh brain tumor specimens were obtained from biopsies taken during neurosurgical procedures. The specimens were cut in two parts, one designated for routine histopathological control and the other for histochemical and growth studies. The formalin fixed specimens were serially cut at 10 microm in a freezing cryostat, mounted in gelatin-coated slides, and processed for sensitive histochemical detection of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase. The other specimens were processed for a HMEM cell growth culture. RESULTS The results show the coexistence of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase in all tumors studied. Type II and III gliomas and oligodendrogliomas show moderate activity of both cholinesterases, whereas in type IV glioma and meningiomas the labeling of both cholinesterases was high. In the craniopharyngiomas a high acetylcholinesterase activity was observed and low level of butyrylcholinesterase labeling. The cell growth was high only in the cases in which butyrylcholinesterase activity was high, such as type IV glioma. In type II and III gliomas, oligodendroglioma, and craniopharyngioma the growth rate was slow. CONCLUSIONS These results could indicate a possible relationship between the presence of butyrylcholinesterase and acetylcholinesterase in brain tumor tissue and cellular proliferation in tumorigenesis.

Abstract
We present a review of 57 cases of nontraumatic subarachnoid hemorrhagesubmitted to CT angiography of the cerebral vessels. The purpose of our study was to estimate the value of CT angiography in the detection of intracranial aneurysms. These findings were compared with those from selective angiography. The results showed that CT angiography is a rapid, low-risk technique with a low level of invasiveness and high specificity and sensitivity in the detection of cerebral aneurysms, allowing the planning of endovascular intervention and surgical approach.

Abstract
Extensive clinical experience has been built up using orthopaedic implants instrumented with strain gauges connected to a Wheatstone bridge by means of percutaneous leads. This research showed the medical relevance of the monitoring of the deformation of implants as a powerful tool to evaluate nursing and rehabilitation exercises, for tracing dangerous overloads and anticipating implant failure and also to observe the healing process. The IMPACT 3500 project focuses on the instrumentation of femoral implants with on board sensors: regular Benoist-Girard implants have been modified, to contain a 'sensing cell', and thoroughly tested in vitro and in vivo. The implant deformations are measured with resistive strain gauges, and the signal is transferred to a personal computer for processing and display, via a hard wired connection, or via a telemetry system. Two fully implantable wireless designs, called Linkstrain and Sealstrain, are powered from the outside by magnetic induction. As Sealstrain contains the whole telemetric system in its cavity, the highest miniaturization was required; this seriously deteriorates the efficiency of the inductive power link.
