Abstract
Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) is a rare febrile disorder with multisystem organ involvement temporally associated with coronavirus 2019 infection (COVID-19) and frequently exhibits features mimicking Kawasaki disease (KD), another febrile disorder in children. The pathogenesis and the full clinical spectrum of MIS-C is poorly understood: It is still unclear whether MIS-C and KD are different syndromes or represent a common spectrum. The erythema and induration of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) scar is one of the characteristic findings of KD, and is useful for the diagnosis in countries where BCG vaccination is mandated in infancy. Furthermore, such findings in BCG scar were also reported after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, which may be related to molecular mimicry. However, there are no reports of changes at the BCG scar in MIS-C cases. Here, we report a case of MIS-C in a 3-year-old Hispanic boy in Japan, with erythema and induration at the BCG scar. The patient received BCG vaccination at 16 months of age in Japan. Four weeks before the onset, he had positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results for SARS-CoV-2 following household outbreak, although he was asymptomatic. He presented with fever and gastrointestinal symptoms, followed by the appearance of all six principal findings of complete KD. He exhibited congestive heart failure, following intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy. He was diagnosed with MIS-C based on characteristic mucocutaneous and gastrointestinal symptoms, decreased cardiac function, and coagulopathy, in addition to laboratory data consistent with MIS-C. The BCG finding was present from the early stage of the disease. The patient was refractory to two doses of IVIGs, and the third IVIG plus prednisolone resulted in defervescence and improvement in heart failure. No coronary involvement was observed. This is the first case of erythema and induration at the BCG scar associated with MIS-C accompanied by KD features, which may give clinical and mechanistic insights in the understanding of the disease. Since the full spectrum of MIS-C is still evolving and both of them are syndromes with overlapped clinical features, further studies are warranted for deep phenotyping of MIS-C with KD features relative to KD in countries with mandatory BCG programs in infancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The quality of end-of-life (Q-EOL) care is influenced by various factors such as resources for palliative care (PC). We introduced a multi-professional expert team (MET) in 2014, which provides home-based care for children and adolescents with incurable cancer. This study investigated the impacts of the outreach activities by the MET on Q-EOL care of pediatric oncology patients. METHODS This observational study retrospectively examined 112 patients receiving end-of-life care between 1989 and 2018 at a pediatric cancer center in Japan. Some of the indicators of Q-EOL care before and after the introduction of the outreach activities by the MET were compared. The subjects were 92 in pre-MET and 20 in post-MET periods. RESULTS The median number of days for which the patients stayed at home during the final seven or 30 days were significantly prolonged in the post-MET period (0.0 vs 1.5 days, P = 0.020, 3.0 vs 12.0 days, P = 0.042). The change was more significant in hematologic malignancies than solid and central nervous system tumors. Patients receiving longer PC before their deaths could stay at home longer during the last 7 days. The ratio of patients receiving PC for more than 2 months was significantly increased in post-MET period (60.9 vs 90.0%, P = 0.014). More patients also greeted their deaths at home in the post-MET period (3.3 vs 25.0%, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The activities of the MET transformed the end-of-life care of children and adolescents with incurable cancer. Earlier transitions to PC from curative treatment were associated with longer home-based care and more deaths at home.

Abstract
Background We recently reported that squamous cell carcinoma antigen 2 (SCCA2) is a reliable biomarker for atopic dermatitis (AD). Objective To further clarify its utility, we investigated for effects of comorbid allergies and AD treatment on serum SCCA levels. Methods Volunteers <18 years old were recruited through our website. Their allergic status was elucidated using the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire. We also recruited pediatric patients who were hospitalized because of severe AD. The serum levels of SCCA1 and SCCA2 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. In the severe AD patients, the levels of thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC), SCCA1, and SCCA2 were measured before and after hospitalization. The severity of AD was assessed using the severity scoring of atopic dermatitis (SCORAD). Results A total of 576 participants (547 volunteers and 29 patients) were enrolled in the study. The levels of SCCA1 and SCCA2 were significantly higher in volunteers with mild AD and patients with severe AD than in healthy volunteers without allergic diseases. The levels were not elevated in those who had mild bronchial asthma or allergic rhinitis without AD. TARC, SCCA1, and SCCA2 were decreased during the treatment in severe AD patients, reflecting clinical improvement in response to treatment. Linear regression analysis for predicting a decrease in the SCORAD index showed R2 values of 0.16, 0.38, and 0.48 for TARC, SCCA1, and SCCA2, respectively. Conclusion SCCAs, especially SCCA2, are sensitive biomarkers for detecting AD in children and adolescents and for assessing the severity and response to treatment of severe AD.

Abstract
Cushing's disease (CD), which manifests as excess cortisol secretion, is caused by adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH)-secreting pituitary adenomas. Such adenomas are occasionally difficult to identify on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and thorough endocrinological examination may be required to detect them. Inferior petrosal sinus (IPS) sampling (IPSS) has been the gold standard test for distinguishing CD from ectopic ACTH syndrome (EAS). However, IPSS is an invasive procedure, and proper catheterization is occasionally challenging due to anatomical variations. Thus, there have been ongoing debates regarding the necessity of this procedure. Here, we present our recent IPSS data derived from the analysis of 65 patients who were referred to us for possible CD between April 2018 and December 2020 after undergoing meticulous endocrinological testing. Even with detailed MRI, no obvious lesions were identified in 19 patients. IPSS performed on these 19 individuals identified an IPS-to-peripheral ACTH gradient in 15 of them. The four patients who lacked this gradient were subjected to a classical algorithm using concurrently measured prolactin levels, the results of which were consistent with their ultimately confirmed diagnoses: two true-positive and two true-negative diagnoses. These findings support the validity of the algorithm and demonstrate that the prolactin-adjusted IPS-to-peripheral ACTH ratio can improve the differentiation between CD and EAS. We had no false-negative results, but three patients were false-positive. Consequently, those three patients in which no apparent tumor was clarified during surgery could not have any endocrinological improvement postoperatively.

Abstract
Introduction Graft‐versus‐host disease (GVHD) is frequent and fatal complication following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and characteristically involves skin, gut, and liver. Macrophages promote tissue regeneration and mediate immunomodulation. Macrophages are divided into two different phenotypes, classically activated M1 (pro‐inflammatory or immune‐reactive macrophages) and alternatively activated M2 (anti‐inflammatory or immune‐suppressive macrophages). The anti‐inflammatory effect of M2 macrophage led us to test its effect in the pathophysiology of GVHD. Methods GVHD was induced in lethally irradiated BALB/c mice. M2 macrophages derived from donor bone marrow (BM) were administered intravenously, while controls received donor BM‐mononuclear cells and splenocytes. Animals were monitored for clinical GVHD and analyzed. Results We confirmed that administering donor BM‐derived M2 macrophages attenuated GVHD severity and prolonged survival after HSCT. Moreover, donor BM‐derived M2 macrophages significantly suppressed donor T cell proliferation by cell‐to‐cell contact in vitro. Conclusions We showed the protective effects of donor‐derived M2 macrophages on GVHD and improved survival in a model of HSCT. Our data suggest that donor‐derived M2 macrophages offer the potential for cell‐based therapy to treat GVHD.

Abstract
Purpose: We conducted a questionnaire survey in 15 pediatric oncology hospitals in Japan to better understand the current status of fertility preservation in childhood and adolescents. Methods: The survey period was from September 2020 to December 2020. We mailed questionnaires to 64 departments involved in pediatric cancer treatments at the 15 hospitals. The primary outcomes were the timing of providing explanations on fertility preservation, presence of health care provider while providing explanations, cooperation between medical staff, and cooperation between hospitals. Results: The response rate was 100% (64/64). Regarding the time at which this information was provided, 79.6% of patients (43/54) received it before cancer treatment; 5.6% (3/54), after remission; and 14.8% (8/54), both time points. Nurses were mostly in attendance (70%) when oncologists provided information to patients. Nine (60%) hospitals did not have a reproductive department. Among these, 28.6% of the respondents referred patients to a reproductive facility that performed fertility preservation. Providing information about fertility preservation was challenging owing to the shortage of specific explanatory materials (35.1%) and the lack of cooperation between pediatric oncologists and reproductive endocrinologists (24.6%). Conclusion: Based on this survey, educational activities regarding fertility preservation centered on pediatric oncologists and nurses are needed. Furthermore, a system for providing explanatory materials for fertility preservation and encouraging cooperation at the physician and hospital levels is also needed (IRB No. H2020-111).

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Huaier extract, whose main active constituent is the proteoglycan, has anti-tumor activity in several types of malignancies. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the effect of Huaier extract in hepatoblastoma cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS The effect of Huaier extract on the proliferation of human hepatoblastoma cell lines HepG2 and HuH-6, was examined. RESULTS Incubation with Huaier extract resulted in a marked, dose-dependent decrease in hepatoblastoma cell viability. Huaier extract induced S phase arrest in hepatoblastoma cells and upregulated the expression of the cell cycle related proteins cyclin D1 and cyclin D3. It also induced apoptosis in hepatoblastoma cells. Additionally, it significantly suppressed the activity of p-ERK and p-MEK. CONCLUSION Huaier extract inhibits proliferation, and induces cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest via the MEK-ERK pathway in hepatoblastoma cells. Huaier extract may act as a complementary agent for treating hepatoblastoma.

Abstract
Importance Chest radiography is a useful noninvasive modality to evaluate pulmonary blood flow status in patients with congenital heart disease. However, the predictive value of chest radiography is limited by the subjective and qualitive nature of the interpretation. Recently, deep learning has been used to analyze various images, but it has not been applied to analyzing chest radiographs in such patients. Objective To develop and validate a quantitative method to predict the pulmonary to systemic flow ratio from chest radiographs using deep learning. Design, Setting, and Participants This retrospective observational study included 1031 cardiac catheterizations performed for 657 patients from January 1, 2005, to April 30, 2019, at a tertiary center. Catheterizations without the Fick-derived pulmonary to systemic flow ratio or chest radiography performed within 1 month before catheterization were excluded. Seventy-eight patients (100 catheterizations) were randomly assigned for evaluation. A deep learning model that predicts the pulmonary to systemic flow ratio from chest radiographs was developed using the method of transfer learning. Main Outcomes and Measures Whether the model can predict the pulmonary to systemic flow ratio from chest radiographs was evaluated using the intraclass correlation coefficient and Bland-Altman analysis. The diagnostic concordance rate was compared with 3 certified pediatric cardiologists. The diagnostic performance for a high pulmonary to systemic flow ratio of 2.0 or more was evaluated using cross tabulation and a receiver operating characteristic curve. Results The study included 1031 catheterizations in 657 patients (522 males [51%]; median age, 3.4 years [interquartile range, 1.2-8.6 years]), in whom the mean (SD) Fick-derived pulmonary to systemic flow ratio was 1.43 (0.95). Diagnosis included congenital heart disease in 1008 catheterizations (98%). The intraclass correlation coefficient for the Fick-derived and deep learning-derived pulmonary to systemic flow ratio was 0.68, the log-transformed bias was 0.02, and the log-transformed precision was 0.12. The diagnostic concordance rate of the deep learning model was significantly higher than that of the experts (correctly classified 64 of 100 vs 49 of 100 chest radiographs; P = .02 [McNemar test]). For detecting a high pulmonary to systemic flow ratio, the sensitivity of the deep learning model was 0.47, the specificity was 0.95, and the area under the receiver operating curve was 0.88. Conclusions and Relevance The present investigation demonstrated that deep learning-based analysis of chest radiographs predicted the pulmonary to systemic flow ratio in patients with congenital heart disease. These findings suggest that the deep learning-based approach may confer an objective and quantitative evaluation of chest radiographs in the congenital heart disease clinic.

Abstract
Background: Injury of the internal carotid artery (ICA) during transsphenoidal surgery (TSS) is a rare but critical complication. There are several reports on endovascular treatment of ICA injury during TSS. With the recent flourishing of extended TSS, injuries to the distal arteries such as the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) are more likely to occur. Case Description: In the present case, we report a pseudoaneurysm of the right ACA due to injury during extended TSS for aggressive prolactinoma. Due to the absence of collateral vessels, the pseudoaneurysm had to be obliterated while preserving the parent artery. Hence, we decided to treat the pseudoaneurysm using stent-assisted coiling (SAC). The pseudoaneurysm was completely obliterated and he was discharged without any complications. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case in which an ACA pseudoaneurysm caused by injury during the TSS was treated with SAC and the parent artery was preserved.

Abstract
Purpose ImmunoCAP® (ImmunoCAP) and IMMULITE® 2000 3gAllergy™ (3gAllergy) systems are major quantitative allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) assay methods. Due to the heterogeneous nature of allergenic extracts and differences in the assay format, quantitation of allergen-sIgEs is not expected to correlate well between different methods. However, we have recently reported good agreement between the methods in the diagnosis of egg allergy. This study aimed to determine and correlate the predictive values of sIgE by the two systems in the diagnosis of milk and wheat allergies. Methods Children who had undergone oral food challenge (OFC) for the diagnosis of milk and wheat allergies were enrolled. The OFCs were performed to diagnose either true allergy in the 1-year-old group (A) or tolerance in the 2- to 6-year-old group (B). Milk, casein and β-lactoglobulin, and wheat and ω-5 gliadin sIgE values were measured using the 2 systems. The predictive accuracy of each sIgE for the OFC outcome was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The probability of a positive OFC outcome was estimated by logistic regression analysis. Results A total of 395 patients were recruited from 7 primary care clinics and 19 hospitals in Japan. Milk and wheat OFCs were performed for 87 and 102 group A patients, and 124 and 82 group B patients, respectively. ROC analysis yielded similar areas under the curve for the 2 assays (0.7–0.9). The log-transformed sIgE data showed a strong linear correlation with the estimated probabilities (R > 0.9). Conclusions The 2 systems may be interchangeable for diagnosis of milk and wheat allergies in young children.

Abstract
Huaier extract, the main active constituent proteoglycan, has anti-tumor activity in various experimental and clinical settings. However, the potential anti-neuroblastoma and associated mechanisms have not been investigated. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to elucidate the potential role of Huaier extract in 3 human neuroblastoma cell lines. Our study demonstrated that incubation with Huaier extract resulted in a marked decrease in cell viability in a dose-dependent manner. Huaier extract induced cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase in neuroblastoma and decreased the cell cycle related protein expression of cyclin D3. Western blotting analysis also showed that Huaier extract induced neuroblastoma cell apoptosis and autophagy. Signaling analysis indicated that Huaier extract suppressed the MEK/ERK and mTOR signaling pathways simultaneously. In conclusion, we verify that Huaier extract causes cell proliferation inhibition, apoptosis, autophagy, and cell cycle arrest in G0/G1 phase via MEK/ERK and mTOR signaling. Huaier extract may act as a complementary agent for treating neuroblastoma.

Abstract
Secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) is a common complication of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and may be an important precipitating factor for the development of myelofibrosis. However, there have been only a few reports on myelofibrosis caused by secondary HPT in children. We describe a case of a 15-year-old boy with myelofibrosis due to secondary HPT who was successfully treated with hemodialysis, erythropoietin, phosphate binders, and activated vitamin D agents. The patient had no past medical history and had been admitted to the hospital for abdominal pain. Routine blood examination revealed pancytopenia combined with renal impairment. Hyperphosphatemia, decreased 1,25-dehydroxyvitamin D, decreased serum calcium, and increased parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels were observed. Bone marrow biopsy confirmed myelofibrosis and renal biopsy revealed nephronophthisis (NPHP). The possibility of renal osteodystrophy and myelofibrosis due to secondary HPT was considered. Hemodialysis and erythropoietin were initiated and combined therapy with a phosphate binder and an active vitamin D agent achieved greater reduction of PTH levels, along with improvement of pancytopenia. As medical treatment for secondary HPT can lead to a reversal of myelofibrosis and avoid parathyroidectomy in children, prompt recognition of this condition has major implications for treatment. Therefore, despite its rarity, pediatricians should consider myelofibrosis due to secondary HPT as a cause of pancytopenia in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate whether a dual endothelin receptor antagonist bosentan modulates the kinetics of bone marrow-derived stem cells in inhibiting the development of pulmonary hypertension. Bone marrow chimeric mice, transplanted with enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP)-positive bone marrow mononuclear cells, were exposed to hypobaric hypoxia or kept in the ambient air, and were daily treated with bosentan sodium salt or saline for 21 days. After the treatment period, right ventricular pressure was measured and pulmonary vascular morphometry was conducted. Incorporation of bone marrow-derived cells was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. Gene expression and protein level in the lung tissue were evaluated by quantitative real-time PCR and western blotting, respectively. The results showed that, in hypoxic mice, right ventricular pressure and the percentage of muscularized vessel were increased and pulmonary vascular density was decreased, each of which was reversed by bosentan. Bone marrow-derived endothelial cells and macrophages in lungs were increased by hypoxia. Bosentan promoted bone marrow-derived endothelial cell incorporation but inhibited macrophage infiltration into lungs. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis revealed that interleukin 6, stromal cell-derived factor-1, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 were upregulated by hypoxia, in which interleukin 6 and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 were downregulated and stromal cell-derived factor-1 was upregulated by bosentan. Protein level of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in the whole lung was significantly upregulated by hypoxia, which was further upregulated by bosentan. Bosentan modulated kinetics of bone marrow-derived ECs and macrophages and related gene expression in lungs in ameliorating pulmonary hypertension in mice. Altered kinetics of bone marrow-derived stem cells may be a novel mechanism of the endothelin receptor blockade in vivo and confer a new understanding of the therapeutic basis for pulmonary hypertension.

Abstract
The chiral crystal is characterized by a lack of mirror symmetry and inversion center, resulting in the inequivalent right- and left-handed structures. In the noncentrosymmetric crystal structure, the spin and momentum of electrons are expected to be locked in the reciprocal space with the help of the spin-orbit interaction. To reveal the spin textures of chiral crystals, we investigate the spin and electronic structure in a p-type semiconductor, elemental tellurium, with the simplest chiral structure by using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our data demonstrate that the highest valence band crossing the Fermi level has a spin component parallel to the electron momentum around the Brillouin zone corners. Significantly, we have also confirmed that the spin polarization is reversed in the crystal with the opposite chirality. The results indicate that the spin textures of the right- and left-handed chiral crystals are hedgehoglike, leading to unconventional magnetoelectric effects and nonreciprocal phenomena.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An outbreak of acute flaccid myelitis was chronologically correlated with an outbreak of severe respiratory illness in Japan in 2015. We hypothesized that increases in children hospitalized with severe respiratory illnesses might also be associated with increase in acute flaccid myelitis in autumn 2018. METHODS We explored the temporal correlations between respiratory illness outbreaks and acute flaccid myelitis during autumn season between 2016 and 2018 using questionnaire surveys. One questionnaire explored the monthly numbers of children with acute flaccid myelitis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and other acute flaccid paralyses. The other questionnaire explored the monthly numbers of children hospitalized with respiratory illnesses associated with wheezing. A correlation between the monthly numbers of children with acute flaccid myelitis and those with respiratory illness was analyzed using the Pearson correlation test. RESULTS Although the number of patients hospitalized with respiratory illness did not correlate with the number of those admitted with myelitis, increases in children aged 7-12 and 13-19 years requiring intensive care unit admission correlated temporally with an outbreak of acute flaccid myelitis. CONCLUSIONS An increase in intensive care unit admissions to treat respiratory disease occurred in association with a cluster of acute flaccid myelitis. An increase in the number of intensive care unit admissions due to respiratory illness may be a clue to expect the occurrence of acute flaccid myelitis.

Abstract
This study was a second multicenter trial on childhood ALL by the Japan Childhood Leukemia Study Group (JACLS) to improve outcomes in non-T ALL. Between April 2002 and March 2008, 1138 children with non-T ALL were enrolled in the JACLS ALL-02 trial. Patients were stratified into three groups using age, white blood cell count, unfavorable genetic abnormalities, and treatment response: standard risk (SR), high risk (HR), and extremely high risk (ER). Prophylactic cranial radiation therapy (PCRT) was abolished except for CNS leukemia. Four-year event-free survival (4yr-EFS) and 4-year overall survival (4yr-OS) rates for all patients were 85.4% ± 1.1% and 91.2% ± 0.9%, respectively. Risk-adjusted therapy resulted in 4yr-EFS rates of 90.4% ± 1.4% for SR, 84.9% ± 1.6% for HR, and 66.5% ± 4.0% for ER. Based on NCI risk classification, 4yr-EFS rates were 88.2% in NCI-SR and 76.4% in NCI-HR patients, respectively. Compared to previous trial ALL-97, 4yr-EFS of NCI-SR patients was significantly improved (88.2% vs 81.2%, log rank p = 0.0004). The 4-year cumulative incidence of isolated (0.9%) and total (1.5%) CNS relapse were significantly lower than those reported previously. In conclusion, improved EFS in NCI-SR patients and abolish of PCRT was achieved in ALL-02.

Abstract
Severe neonatal gastrointestinal diseases such as necrotizing enterocolitis or spontaneous intestinal perforation are potentially lethal conditions which predominantly occur in preterm infants. Cytomegalovirus (CMV), which is known to cause congenital and acquired infections in the newborns, has also been implicated in such severe gastrointestinal diseases in premature infants. However, the pathogenic role of CMV and effect of antiviral therapy in severe gastrointestinal disease in premature neonates is currently unclear. We present an infant, born at 26-weeks' gestation, presented with progressive dyspepsia and abdominal distention after the closure of the symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus at the day of life (DOL) 4, requiring the emergent surgery for ileal perforation at the DOL8. After the surgery, abdominal symptoms persisted and the second emergent surgery was performed for the recurrent ileal perforation at DOL17. Even then the abdominal symptoms prolonged and pathological examination in the affected intestine at the second surgery showed CMV inclusion body. Immunoreactivity for CMV antigen was detected in the specimen at the first surgery on DOL8. Blood and urinary CMV-DNA were detected at DOL28. CMV-DNA was also detected in the dried umbilical cord which was obtained within a week from birth. A 6-week course of intravenous ganciclovir (12 mg/kg/day) was started at DOL34 and then symptoms resolved along with decreasing blood CMV-DNA. Pathological findings characteristic of CMV were not detected in the resection specimen at the ileostomy closure at DOL94. These observations indicate that anti-CMV therapy may be beneficial for some premature infants with severe CMV-associated gastrointestinal diseases and warrants further studies focusing on pathogenic role, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of this underrecognized etiology of severe gastrointestinal diseases particularly in premature neonates.

Abstract
The impact of electron correlation on the Dirac semimetal state is investigated for perovskite CaIrO_{3} in terms of the magnetotransport properties under varying pressures. The reduction of electron correlation with a pressure of 1 GPa enhances the Fermi velocity as much as 40%, but it reduces the mobility by an order of magnitude by detuning the Dirac node from the Fermi energy. Moreover, the giant magnetoresistance at the quantum limit due to the one-dimensional confinement of Dirac electrons is critically suppressed under pressure. These results indicate that the electron correlation is a crucial knob for controlling the transport of a correlated Dirac semimetal.

Abstract
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common malignant disorder in children and intensive combination therapy has markedly improved patient prognosis. However, efficacy of the treatment still fails in 10‑15% of patients. Glucocorticoids (GCs) such as prednisone and dexamethasone (DEX) are essential drugs used for ALL chemotherapy, and the response to GC treatment is a strong independent factor of ALL prognosis. In the present study, we examined the mechanism of GC resistance of B‑cell precursor ALL (BCP‑ALL). As determined by RT‑qPCR and western blot analyses, GC treatment upregulated glucocorticoid receptor (GR) protein and Bcl‑2‑interacting mediator of cell death (BCL2L11, BIM) protein expression, resulting in apoptosis of a GC‑sensitive BCP‑ALL cell line, but not of a GC‑resistant BCP‑ALL cell line as shown by flow cytometry. GR was downregulated in a DEX‑resistant BCP‑ALL cell line which was induced by treatment of cells with increasing concentrations of DEX. Importantly, expression levels of miR‑142‑3p and miR‑17~92 cluster were upregulated in the BCP‑ALL cell line with acquired DEX resistance as examined by RT‑qPCR. Our results suggest that interference of miR‑142‑3p and miR‑17~92 may overcome the resistance of BCP‑ALL to GCs.
