Abstract
The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has investigated the π- γ → π- π- π+ reaction at center-of-momentum energy below five pion masses, sqrt[s]<5m(π), embedded in the Primakoff reaction of 190 GeV pions impinging on a lead target. Exchange of quasireal photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, t'<0.001 GeV2/c2. Using partial-wave analysis techniques, the scattering intensity of Coulomb production described in terms of chiral dynamics and its dependence on the 3π-invariant mass m(3π)=sqrt[s] were extracted. The absolute cross section was determined in seven bins of sqrt[s] with an overall precision of 20%. At leading order, the result is found to be in good agreement with the prediction of chiral perturbation theory over the whole energy range investigated.

Abstract
Numerous health systems have introduced competition between health plans while banning risk-rated premiums. Risk adjustment for health plans is introduced to reduce incentives for risk selection and to create incentives for health plans to permanently invest in care for the chronically ill. According to the international health economics state of the art, risk adjustment in the German social health insurance system has used information on health status (measured by diagnoses and drug prescriptions) on top of demographic information since 2009. In non-competitive health care systems similar mechanisms are sometimes established, e.g. to achieve an equitable distribution of resources between regions. An evaluation of the first year of health-based risk adjustment demonstrates a superior performance in comparison to the old, demographic risk adjustment. The old risk adjustment formula (without ex post high-cost pooling) showed R(2) of 5.8%, CPM of 10.4% and MAPE of 2,226 €, in contrast to the new health status-based risk adjustment formula (without cash benefit for sick allowance) which reaches R(2) 20.2%, CPM 22.5% and MAPE 1,817 €. However, to make competition between health plans functional for improvement of quality and efficiency of health care, health plans must be granted additional instruments to act as prudent buyers of health care.

Abstract
The size polydispersity distribution of synaptic vesicles (SVs) is characterized under quasi-physiological conditions by dynamic light scattering (DLS). Highly purified fractions of SVs obtained from rat brain still contain a small amount of larger contaminant structures, which can be quantified by DLS and further reduced by asymmetric-flow field-flow (AFFF) fractionation. The intensity autocorrelation functions g (2)(τ) recorded from these samples are analyzed by a constrained regularization method as well as by an alternative direct modeling approach. The results are in quantitative agreement with the polydispersity obtained from cryogenic electron microscopy of vitrified SVs. Next, different vesicle fusion assays based on samples composed of SVs and small unilamellar proteoliposomes with the fusion proteins syntaxin 1 and SNAP-25A are characterized by DLS. The size increase of the proteoliposomes due to SNARE-dependent fusion with SVs is quantified by DLS under quasi-physiological conditions.

Abstract
The COMPASS experiment at the CERN SPS has studied the diffractive dissociation of negative pions into the π- π- π+ final state using a 190 GeV/c pion beam hitting a lead target. A partial wave analysis has been performed on a sample of 420,000 events taken at values of the squared 4-momentum transfer t' between 0.1 and 1 GeV2/c2. The well-known resonances a1(1260), a2(1320), and π2(1670) are clearly observed. In addition, the data show a significant natural-parity exchange production of a resonance with spin-exotic quantum numbers J(PC)=1-+ at 1.66 GeV/c2 decaying to ρπ. The resonant nature of this wave is evident from the mass-dependent phase differences to the J(PC)=2-+ and 1++ waves. From a mass-dependent fit a resonance mass of (1660±10(-64)(+0)) MeV/c2 and a width of (269±21(-64)(+42)) MeV/c2 are deduced, with an intensity of (1.7±0.2)% of the total intensity.

Abstract
First measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on a transversely polarized 6LiD target are presented. The data were taken in 2002 with the COMPASS spectrometer using the muon beam of the CERN SPS at 160 GeV/c. The Collins asymmetry turns out to be compatible with zero, as does the measured Sivers asymmetry within the present statistical errors.

Abstract
CASE The case of a primary multicentric cutaneous epithelioid angiosarcoma is described. A 39-year-old female patient presented with a tumor on the left distal forearm and the fourth finger of the left hand. Partial amputation of the left hand and local excision of the tumor on the left forearm were performed. For the next three years the patient was free of local or systemic recurrence. After this time period, a left shoulder exarticulation had to be performed because of tumor recurrence in the left axilla. The patient died 64 months after diagnosis. CONCLUSION Cutaneous epithelioid angiosarcoma is a highly malignant tumor which has only been described once on the hand. The treatment primarily is a surgical one. If possible, the function of the extremity should be preserved as long as possible.

Abstract
Quantal neurotransmitter release at excitatory synapses depends on glutamate import into synaptic vesicles by vesicular glutamate transporters (VGLUTs). Of the three known transporters, VGLUT1 and VGLUT2 are expressed prominently in the adult brain, but during the first two weeks of postnatal development, VGLUT2 expression predominates. Targeted deletion of VGLUT1 in mice causes lethality in the third postnatal week. Glutamatergic neurotransmission is drastically reduced in neurons from VGLUT1-deficient mice, with a specific reduction in quantal size. The remaining activity correlates with the expression of VGLUT2. This reduction in glutamatergic neurotransmission can be rescued and enhanced with overexpression of VGLUT1. These results show that the expression level of VGLUTs determines the amount of glutamate that is loaded into vesicles and released and thereby regulates the efficacy of neurotransmission.

Abstract
Protein conformational transitions form the molecular basis of many cellular processes, such as signal transduction and membrane traffic. However, in many cases, little is known about their structural dynamics. Here we have used dynamic single-molecule fluorescence to study at high time resolution, conformational transitions of syntaxin 1, a soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptors protein essential for exocytotic membrane fusion. Sets of syntaxin double mutants were randomly labeled with a mix of donor and acceptor dye and their fluorescence resonance energy transfer was measured. For each set, all fluorescence information was recorded simultaneously with high time resolution, providing detailed information on distances and dynamics that were used to create structural models. We found that free syntaxin switches between an inactive closed and an active open configuration with a relaxation time of 0.8 ms, explaining why regulatory proteins are needed to arrest the protein in one conformational state.

Abstract
In humans, mutations in the alpha-synuclein gene or exposure to the neurotoxin 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) produce Parkinson's disease with loss of dopaminergic neurons and depletion of nigrostriatal dopamine. alpha-Synuclein is a vertebrate-specific component of presynaptic nerve terminals that may function in modulating synaptic transmission. To test whether MPTP toxicity involves alpha-synuclein, we generated alpha-synuclein-deficient mice by homologous recombination, and analyzed the effect of deleting alpha-synuclein on MPTP toxicity using these knockout mice. In addition, we examined commercially available mice that contain a spontaneous loss of the alpha-synuclein gene. As described previously, deletion of alpha-synuclein had no significant effects on brain structure or composition. In particular, the levels of synaptic proteins were not altered, and the concentrations of dopamine, dopamine metabolites, and dopaminergic proteins were unchanged. Upon acute MPTP challenge, alpha-synuclein knockout mice were partly protected from chronic depletion of nigrostriatal dopamine when compared with littermates of the same genetic background, whereas mice carrying the spontaneous deletion of the alpha-synuclein gene exhibited no protection. Furthermore, alpha-synuclein knockout mice but not the mice with the alpha-synuclein gene deletion were slightly more sensitive to methamphetamine than littermate control mice. These results demonstrate that alpha-synuclein is not obligatorily coupled to MPTP sensitivity, but can influence MPTP toxicity on some genetic backgrounds, and illustrate the need for extensive controls in studies aimed at describing the effects of mouse knockouts on MPTP sensitivity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The performance and results of corneal tattooing are described in a case series of 11 patients suffering from a disfiguring corneal scar using a technique similar to conventional dermatography. METHODS Drawing ink in different shades was applied into the anterior corneal stroma by punctures performed with a conventional spatula needle. RESULTS Up to 4 years after surgery all patients still had satisfactory staining of the formerly cosmetically disfiguring corneal scar. CONCLUSION Tattooing of unsightly corneal scars proved to be an efficient and easy to perform technique, yielding acceptable results during follow up.

Abstract
Glutamate is the major excitatory neurotransmitter in mammalian CNS. In the presynaptic nerve terminal, glutamate is stored in synaptic vesicles and released by exocytosis. Previously, it has been shown that a transport protein originally identified as a brain-specific Na(+)-dependent inorganic phosphate transporter I (BNPI) functions as vesicular glutamate transporter and thus has been renamed VGLUT1. Recently, a protein highly homologous to VGLUT1, "differentiation-associated BNPI" (DNPI), has been discovered. Northern blot and in situ hybridization analyses indicate that DNPI mRNA is expressed in some brain regions in which VGLUT1 mRNA is not expressed. We now show that DNPI functions as vesicular glutamate transporter with properties very similar to VGLUT1 and propose to rename the protein VGLUT2. VGLUT2 is highly enriched in synaptic vesicles. Furthermore, VGLUT2 resides on a vesicle population that is distinct from vesicles containing the vesicular GABA transporter or VGLUT1, showing that the expression of VGLUT1 and VGLUT2 do not overlap. When VGLUT2 was expressed in BON cells, membrane fractions displayed ATP-dependent, carbonyl cyanide p-trifluoromethoxyphenylhydrazone-sensitive glutamate uptake. Overexpression of VGLUT2 in cultured autaptic GABAergic neurons yielded postsynaptic currents that were insensitive to the GABA(A) receptor antagonist bicuculline but blocked by the AMPA-receptor antagonist 2,3-dihydroxy-6-nitro-7-sulfonyl-benzo[F]quinoxaline. Thus, expression of VGLUT2 suffices to cause GABAergic neurons to release glutamate in addition to GABA in a manner very similar to that reported previously for VGLUT1.

Abstract
SNARE (soluble NSF acceptor protein receptor) proteins are thought to mediate membrane fusion by assembling into heterooligomeric complexes that connect the fusing membranes and initiate the fusion reaction. Here we used site-directed spin labeling to map conformational changes that occur upon homo- and heterooligomeric complex formation of neuronal SNARE proteins. We found that the soluble domains of synaptobrevin, SNAP-25, and syntaxin 1 are unstructured. At higher concentrations, the SNARE motif of syntaxin 1 forms homooligomeric helical bundles with at least some of the alpha-helices aligned in parallel. In the assembled SNARE complex, mapping of thirty side chain positions yielded spectra which are in good agreement with the recently published crystal structure. The loop region of SNAP-25 that connects the two SNARE motifs is largely unstructured. C-terminal truncation of synaptobrevin resulted in complexes that are completely folded N-terminal of the truncation but become unstructured at the C-terminal end. The binary complex of syntaxin and SNAP-25 consists of a parallel four helix-bundle with properties resembling that of the ternary complex.
