Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to analyse audiological data after microvascular decompression (MVD) for hemifacial spasm (HFS), and to compare the data with hearing before surgery. METHODS Auditory functions were studied before and after surgery in 698 patients who underwent an MVD of the intracranial portion of the facial nerve for HFS. The results were expressed as the average of pure tone audiometry (PTA) and speech discrimination score (SDS). RESULTS 668 patients (95.7%) had no hearing loss immediately after surgery (group 1). 17 patients (2.4%) had a postoperative decrease in PTA exceeding 15 dB and a decrease in SDS which was proportional to the postoperative PTA thresholds (group 2). Eight patients (1.2%) had poor SDS that appeared to be out of proportion to the degree of hearing loss depicted by the postoperative PTA thresholds, suggesting retrocochlear or cochlear nerve pathology (group 3). Five patients (0.7%) had total deafness after surgery (group 4). In group 2, 12 patients (70.6%) returned to their preoperative hearing capacity. However, among the eight patients in group 3 and five in group 4, only two (25%) and none (0%) have returned to their preoperative hearing status, respectively. CONCLUSION In this large study, permanent hearing loss occurred in 16 patients (2.2%). Patients with a mild hearing loss with a good SDS (cochlear type) demonstrated much better prognosis than those with poor SDS (retrocochlear type) or total deafness. In addition, total deafness after surgery had no chance of recovery to preoperative hearing capacity.

Abstract
Eugenol is widely used in dentistry as a local analgesic agent, because of its ability to allay tooth pain. Interestingly, eugenol shares several pharmacological actions with local anesthetics which include inhibition of voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) and activation of transient receptor potential vanilloid subtype 1 (TRPV1). In the present study, we investigated the effects of eugenol on pain behaviors in orofacial area, and as an attempt to elucidate its mechanism we characterized inhibitory effects of eugenol on VGSCs in trigeminal ganglion (TG) neurons. TG neurons were classified into four types on the basis of their neurochemical and electrophysiological properties such as cell size, shapes of action potential (AP), isolectin-B(4) (IB(4)) binding, and were analyzed for the association of their distinctive electrophysiological properties and mRNA expression of Na(v)1.8 and TRPV1 by using single-cell RT-PCR following whole-cell recordings. Subcutaneous injection of eugenol reduced the thermal nociception and capsaicin-induced thermal hyperalgesia in a dose-dependent manner. Eugenol also diminished digastric electromyogram evoked by noxious electrical stimulation to anterior tooth pulp, which was attributable to the blockade of AP conduction on inferior alveolar nerve. At cellular level, eugenol reversibly inhibited APs and VGSCs in IB(4)+/TRPV1+/Na(v)1.8+ nociceptive TG neurons (Type I-Type III) and IB(4)-/TRPV1-/Na(v)1.8- nociceptive TG neurons (Type IV). Both TTX-resistant I(Na) in Type I-Type III neurons and TTX-sensitive I(Na) in Type IV neurons were sensitive to eugenol. Taken together, these results suggest that eugenol may serve as local anesthetics for other pathological pain conditions in addition to its wide use in dental clinic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigated the prognostic significance of CXC chemokine receptor CXCR-4 expression in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and its relationship with matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2), MMP-9, and Ki-67 expression. STUDY DESIGN The CXCR-4, MMP-2, MMP-9, and Ki-67 expression was assessed immunohistochemically in 74 OSCC patients. The results were analyzed in connection with clinicopathologic factors. RESULTS The CXCR-4 expression was positive in 45 cases and significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis (P = .037), MMP-9 expression (P = .025), and Ki-67 expression (P = .001). Univariate analysis showed that CXCR-4 expression, MMP-9 expression, Ki-67 expression, tumor size, lymph node metastasis, clinical stage, and recurrence positively correlated with prognosis. Multivariate analysis indicated that CXCR-4 expression was an independent prognostic factor for poor survival in patients with OSCC. CONCLUSION Expression of CXCR-4 is a significant prognostic indicator for poor survival in patients with OSCC and correlates with expression of MMP-9 and Ki-67. The inhibition of CXCR-4 represents a possible molecular approach to the treatment of OSCC.

Abstract
Background The Akt/PKB family of kinases is frequently activated in human cancers, including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Akt-induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) involves downregulation of E-cadherin, which appears to result from upregulation of the transcription repressor Snail. Recently, it was proposed that carcinoma cells, especially in metastatic sites, could acquire the mesenchymal-to-epithelial reverting transition (MErT) in order to adapt the microenvironments and re-expression of E-cadherin be a critical indicator of MErT. However, the precise mechanism and biologic or clinical importance of the MErT in cancers have been little known. This study aimed to investigate whether Akt inhibition would restore the expression of E-cadherin and β-catenin, reduce that of Vimentin, and induce the MErT in OSCC cells with low or negative expression of E-cadherin. We also investigate whether inhibition of Akt activity would affect the E-cadherin repressors and signaling molecules like NF-κB, ERK, and p38. Methods We screened several OSCC cell lines in order to select suitable cell line models for inducing MErT, using immunoblotting and methylation specific-PCR. We examined whether Akt inhibitor phosphatidylinositol ether lipid analogues (PIA) treatment would restore the expression of E-cadherin and β-catenin, reduce that of Vimentin, and induce the MErT in KB and KOSCC-25B cells using RT-PCR, immunoblotting, immunofluorescence analysis, and in vitro migration assay. We also investigated whether inhibition of Akt activity would affect the E-cadherin repressors, including Snail, Twist, and SIP-1/ZEB-2 and signaling molecules like NF-κB, ERK, JNK, and p38 using RT-PCR, immunoblotting, and immunofluorescence analysis. Results Of the 7 OSCC cell lines, KB and KOSCC-25B showed constitutively activated phosphorylated Akt and low or negative expression of E-cadherin. Inhibition of Akt activity by PIA decreased NF-κB signaling, but did not affect phosphorylation of ERK, JNK, and p38 in KB and KOSCC-25B cells. Akt inhibition led to downregulation of Snail and Twist expression. In contrast, inhibition of Akt activity by PIA did not induce any changes in SIP-1/ZEB-2 expression. PIA treatment induced the expression of E-cadherin and β-catenin, reduce that of Vimentin, restored their epithelial morphology of a polygonal shape, and reduced tumor cell migration in KB and KOSCC-25B cells, which was the corresponding feature of MErT. Conclusion All of these findings suggest that Akt inhibition could induce the MErT through decreased NF-κB signaling and downregulation of Snail and Twist in OSCC cells. A strategy involving Akt inhibition might be a useful therapeutic tool in controlling cancer dissemination and metastasis in oral cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) are characterized by a high degree of local invasion and a high rate of metastases to cervical lymph nodes. Downregulation of CXCR-4 by siRNA inhibits invasion and growth of breast and colon cancer cells. However, there have been no reports on the downregulation of CXCR-4 by small interfering RNA (siRNA) in oral cancer cells. METHODS We generated two stable CXCR-4-knockdown clones (KBsi and KOSCC-25Bsi) from the KB and KOSCC-25B OSCC cell lines by lentiviral delivery. In vitro invasion and cell proliferation assays were used to investigate the effect of CXCR-4 downregulation on cell proliferation and invasiveness in KBsi and KOSCC-25Bsi. Immunohistochemistry was performed to evaluate the correlation between CXCR-4 expression and proliferation in 26 OSCC tissue samples. RESULTS CXCR4-knockdown OSCC cells showed reduced invasiveness. The invasiveness of KBsi decreased to 29.5% of the vector-infected controls, and KOSCC-25Bsi decreased to 38.1% of the control vector-infected cells (P < 0.05). The CXCR4-knockdown OSCC cells grew significantly slower than the vector-infected control cells. KBsi and KOSCC-25Bsi cells proliferated at 69.5% and 71.7%, respectively, of the rate of control vector-infected cells (P < 0.05). CXCR-4-positive group had significantly higher PCNA labeling index than CXCR-4-negative group in OSCC tissue samples. CONCLUSION These results suggest that the downregulation of CXCR-4 induces anti-proliferative and anti-invasive effects in OSCC and that CXCR-4 might be a useful target molecule for the treatment of OSCC.

Abstract
Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are established from blastocysts and give rise to various types of cells and tissues. In the present study, we assessed the osteogenic potential of ESCs using in vitro culture conditions and in vivo differentiation in tooth sockets. An ESC-derived embryoid body (EB) was formed and subsequently induced to an osteogenic lineage. The differentiated EB cells exhibited increased expression of various osteogenic markers as determined by real-time PCR analysis. Likewise, the differentiated EB-derived cells had enhanced alkaline phosphatase activity and calcium accumulation, as determined by cytochemical methods. For in vivo transplantation, mixtures of ESCs and hydroxyapatite/ tricalcium phosphate particles or EBs alone were transplanted into female rat tooth sockets. After 12 weeks, we observed formation of osteogenic structure in the tooth sockets without evidence of teratomas. These data suggest that pluripotent ESCs can serve as an alternative source for the reconstruction of craniofacial structures, as well as for further applications.

Abstract
Acrylic-based denture materials have several common weak points, such as shrinkage after curing, lack of strength and toxicity. In order to solve these problems, we adapted a hybrid system using acrylic polymer and polyhedraloligosilsesquioxane (POSS). The aim of the study was to investigate the biocompatibility of a reinforced acrylic-based hybrid denture composite resin with POSS. Specimens of a novel polymeric denture base resin, in which POSS was used to partially replace the commonly used base monomer, were fabricated. In order to examine changes in biocompatibility with time, fresh specimens, along with specimens soaked in distilled water for 24 and 72 h were fabricated. Three other types of acrylic denture base resins were used to prepare the resin specimens. Biocompatibility (as measured by a metabolic assay, an agar overlay test, and a mutagenesis assay) of the composites was tested. The metabolic and mutagenesis assays were conducted with pure culture medium as a control. In this study, the reinforced acrylic-based hybrid denture composite resin with POSS showed improved biocompatibility and lower mutagenicity than the control. Statistical examinations showed the cell metabolic activity of the novel polymeric denture base resin in the 72-h immersion case as having almost the same inclination as the control. We hope that these results might aid in the development of a reinforced acrylic-based denture resin.

Abstract
We report the MR imaging findings in a case of intracranial aspergillosis involving the internal auditory canal (IAC) and inner ear in an immunocompetent patient. The presence of rim enhancement of the vestibulocochlear nerve, abnormal signal intensity involving the labyrinth, and adjacent meningeal enhancement might help clinicians to make a correct diagnosis in patients with a mass in the IAC and previous history of ear surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ameloblastoma is a benign, but locally invasive tumor known for its high rate of recurrence. However, few comprehensive genetic studies have been conducted about its tumorigenesis. Our aim was to identify possible genes involved in the development and progression of ameloblastoma, using microarray analysis with dentigerous cyst as a control. METHODS Total RNA was extracted from two fresh dentigerous cysts and ameloblastoma specimens. Following microarray analysis, semiquantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry were performed on selected genes. RESULTS Seventy-three genes were overexpressed and 49 were underexpressed. These genes were divided into categories according to function. The microarray results for 13 selected genes were verified with semiquantitative RT-PCR. CONCLUSIONS We identified important genes related to the development and progression of ameloblastoma through a large-scale gene expression analysis. This study will stimulate further investigations on genes significant for early diagnosis and prognosis of ameloblastoma.

Abstract
Electrospinning of type I collagen in 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) to fabricate a biomimetic nanofibrous extracellular matrix for tissue engineering was investigated. The average diameter of collagen nanofibers electrospun from 8% collagen solution in HFIP was 460 nm (range of 100-1200 nm). The as-spun collagen nanofibrous matrix was chemically cross-linked by glutaraldehyde vapor with a saturated aqueous solution and then treated with aqueous 0.1m glycine to block unreacted aldehyde groups. With vapor phase cross-linking for 12h, porosity of the collagen matrix decreased from 89% to 71%. The collagen nanofibrous matrix showed good tensile strength, even in aqueous solution. Effects on cytocompatibility, cell behavior, cell and collagen nanofiber interactions, and open wound healing in rats were examined. Relatively low cell adhesion was observed on uncoated collagen nanofibers, whereas collagen nanofibrous matrices treated with type I collagen or laminin were functionally active in responses in normal human keratinocytes. Collagen nanofibrous matrices were very effective as wound-healing accelerators in early-stage wound healing. Our results indicate that cross-linked collagen nanofibers coated with ECM proteins, particularly type I collagen, may be a good candidate for biomedical applications, such as wound dressing and scaffolds for tissue engineering.

Abstract
The p16/INK4A is one of the major target genes in carcinogenesis and its inactivation has frequently been reported in other types of tumors. The purpose of this study is to evaluate inactivation patterns of p16/INK4A in oral squamous cell carcinoma. Six different oral cancer cell lines, SCC-4, SCC-9, SCC-15, SCC-25, KB, and SNUDH- 379 were examined for inactivation of p16/INK4A genes. In the analysis of p16/INK4A gene inactivation, PCR amplification, direct sequencing, and methylation-specific PCR methods were adopted for evaluation of homozygous deletion, point mutation, and promoter hypermethylation, respectively. Homozygous deletion was detected in SCC-25 and SCC-9. SCC-15 showed hypermethylated promoter region within p16/INK4A gene. It is suggestive in the present study that inactivation patterns of p16/INK4A were mainly homozygous deletion, promoter methylation rather than point mutation in oral squamous cancer cell lines, so treatment modalities of oral squamous cell carcinoma should be focused on these types of inactivation.

Abstract
A local invasion and lymph node metastasis (LNM) of an oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has a poor prognosis, and involves the degradation of the extracellular matrix mediated by multiple proteolytic enzymes including membrane type I-matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP). This study aimed to determine the role of MT1-MMP in OSCC, to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of MT1-MMP with regard to the invasiveness and LNM of the OSCC, and to evaluate the major source of MT1-MMP mRNA and its protein using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. MT1-MMP expression was examined in 46 OSCCs via immunohistochemistry and non-radioisotope in situ hybridization. The relationship between MT1-MMP expression and LNM, as well as the histological invasiveness, was statistically analyzed. The results showed that whereas 12 out of the 18 OSCCs (66.7%) with LNM showed moderate to strong MT1-MMP expression, only nine of the 28 OSCCs (32.1%) without LNM expressed MT1-MMP strongly. MT1-MMP expression was significantly higher with regard to LNM (P=0.022). As the invasion grade became stronger (from grade a to grade d), MT1-MMP was significantly more strongly expressed (P=0.033). These results suggest that MT1-MMP is primarily secreted in the OSCC cells and is involved in the invasiveness of the OSCC and LNM. Moreover, MT1-MMP combined with other markers may be used to predict the metastatic potential of an OSCC.

Abstract
Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is of particular interest because of its high recurrence rate and aggressive behavior. Two hundred fifty-six cases of OKC were reviewed for the age of the patient at diagnosis, sex of the patient, OKC location, and radiographic findings, and 132 patients with OKC were observed to estimate recurrence, which was analyzed for age, sex, location, and several histopathologic findings. OKCs occurred more frequently in men (58.6%) than in women (41.4%), and they occurred in patients within a wide age range, most commonly in patients in the third decade of life (28.9%), followed by those in the second decade (25.0%); the mean age of patients with OKC was 30.8 years. One hundred ninety-six of the 256 cases (76.5%) occurred in the mandible, and the other 60 cases (23.5%) occurred in the maxilla. The mandibular molar and the premolar areas (51.2%) were the most common sites, and the most frequent clinical manifestations at first admission were swelling, pain, or both (82.4% of total cases). Radiographic impressions included dentigerous cyst (27.3%), OKC (25.4%), primordial cyst (14.8%), ameloblastoma (11.7%), residual cyst (9.8%), and radicular cyst (3.1%). The frequency of recurrence at the follow-up examination was 58.3%. There was no significant difference in the recurrence rate on the basis of the sex of the patient. However, OKCs had a significantly higher recurrence rate in patients in the fifth decade of life than in patients in the other age groups (P = .005).Recurrence rates were significantly dependent on the sites of involvement, and OKCs in the mandibular molar region had significantly higher recurrence rates than those in other sites (P = .001). The histopathologic presence of one or more daughter cysts was significantly related to recurrence (P = .03).

Abstract
Angiogenesis is an essential process for the growth and invasion of cancer. However, it is uncertain that anti-angiogenic effects can be a major treatment strategy of oral cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate whether thalidomide and paclitaxel, which are known to be potent inhibitors of angiogenesis, have inhibitory effects on the growth of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) xenotransplanted into nude mice and whether anti-angiogenesis can be included as a major treatment strategy of oral cancer. After human OSCC cell line, KB, was subcutaneously inoculated into 32 nude mice, the volume of tumor was measured every 3 days. When the tumor mass reached 300-500 mm3, thalidomide (200 mg/kg) and paclitaxel (13 mg/kg) were administered into the animals and tumor volume change was checked. The excised tumor masses on the 30th day after administration were frozen and processed for immunohistochemistry using vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and CD31, and for real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). We evaluated VEGF expression and the expression of its mRNA and CD31 for vessel density. Paclitaxel showed an inhibitory effect on the growth of transplanted human OSCC and reduced the immunohistochemical expression of VEGF and CD31 and VEGF mRNA (P<0.01). Thalidomide also lowered remarkably VEGF expression (P<0.01) and CD31 (P<0.01) as well as VEGF mRNA (P<0.05), but it did not show statistically significant inhibitory effect on the tumor growth. These results suggest that the growth of human OSCC is not simply dependent on VEGF-induced angiogenesis and that anti-angiogenic therapy alone is not likely to be effective for the treatment of OSCC, but might be regarded as adjuvant chemotherapeutic strategy.

Abstract
We previously identified a serine type protease inhibitor (serpin) cDNA, using PCR-based differential display, in the fall webworm which was up-regulated following a bacterial challenge (Shin et al., 1998). The serpin cDNA was inserted into an expression vector and the serpin protein was expressed in Escherichia coli. In order to investigate the action of serpin in vivo, we examined the concentration of serpin protein in the larvae of Hyphantria cunea by Western blot analysis using a polyclonal antibody raised in a rabbit injected with recombinant serpin. H. cunea serpin was found mainly in the plasma with a molecular mass of 56.6 kDa on SDS-PAGE followed by Western blot analysis. The concentration of serpin in the plasma was slightly increased following bacterial challenge. A new 50.5 kDa (approx.) band was detected post E. coli and distilled water injection. Both E. coli and distilled water injection induced increased phenoloxidase (PO) activity in the plasma, although E. coli injection produced a larger increase in activity. Hyphantria serpin probably participates in negative regulation of the prophenoloxidase (proPO) cascade. Recombinant serpin inhibits PO activity in the hemocyte lysate fraction activated by LPS. There is a similarity between the P2-P2' region (NKFG) of the serpin reactive site loop and the S2-S2' region (NRFG) of the insect proPO maturation site. This indicates a form of competitive inhibition of serpin against a protease involved in the activation of proPO. A tyrosine residue in the P11 region of serpin, which is conserved in the S11 regions of all known proPOs maturation sites, provides further support for this hypothesis.

Abstract
In order to evaluate the significance of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in predicting the metastatic potential of oral squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), we compared MMP-2 and -9 expression in 19 metastasizing oral SCCs with that in 25 non-metastasizing cases by immunohistochemistry and gelatin zymography. Immunohistochemistry showed that increased MMP-2 expression was not significantly related to metastasis; increased MMP-9 expression found in oral SCCs was, however, statistically significant (oral SCCs with metastasis, 73.7%; those without metastasis, 36.0%; P<0.05). Gelatin zymography revealed no significant difference in the activated form of MMP-2 between metastasizing and non-metastasizing oral SCCs. In metastasizing SCCs, on the other hand, increases in the activated form of MMP-9 were significant. These results suggest that oral SCCs express MMP-2 and -9, and that MMP-9 may play a more important role than MMP-2 in the metastasis of oral SCCs to adjacent tissue. An analysis of MMP-9 expression may be useful for predicting the metastatic potential of oral SCCs.

Abstract
Cryptotanshinone and dihydrotanshinone I, constituents of a medicinal plant, Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, had antibacterial activity against a broad range of Gram positive bacteria. These compounds generated superoxide radicals in Bacillus subtilis lysates. A recombination-deficient mutant strain of B. subtilis was 2- to 8-fold more sensitive than a wild strain, and this hypersensitivity was reduced in the presence of dithiothreitol as an antioxidant. DNA, RNA, and protein syntheses in B. subtilis were non-selectively inhibited by these compounds. These results suggest that superoxide radicals are important in the antibacterial actions of the agents.

Abstract
This study was conducted to assess the psychosocial adjustment of Korean-American physicians in the aspect of personal satisfaction after returning to Korea. A questionnaire was mailed to 72 Korean-American physicians who were practicing medicine in Korea and forty physicians responded. These physicians, typically in their 50s, lived in America for 21-30 years before coming back to Korea. The most frequent motives for them to come back to Korea were giving back to their native country, longing for their native country, filial duty, and suggestions from their colleagues or professors to move back. Eighty percent of them were extremely satisfied or slightly satisfied with their work in Korea, and only 10% are extremely or slightly dissatisfied with their decision to return. Although most of them are content for the time being in Korea, only 12.5% have definite plans to stay in Korea after retirement. The variables that were most significantly related to personal satisfaction of returning to Korea were how well treated at work and how much satisfied with job rather than other factors such as motives for returning, duration of staying in America and in Korea, and family situation.

Abstract
A 310 bp EcoRI/HindIII fragment downstream of the Bacillus subtilis cdd gene was isolated from pSO52 which harbours the cdd gene and its vicinity, and was inserted into the pDIA5304. The hybrid vector pSO701 was integrated into the targeted locus of the B. subtilis chromosome and the cdd downstream region was rescued by furthermost BamHI walking toward the sigA locus. By sequencing and analyzing the intergenic region between the cdd and p23-dnaG-sigA operon from the selected clone pSO702, the era genes encoding glycyl tRNA synthetase alpha and beta chains with two unknown distal genes at both terminals were identified and mapped. The cdd was separated by 6,964 bp from the p23-dnaG-sigA operon. Combined data with an additional analysis of the cdd upstream from the sequenced 280 kb stretch in GenBank database (accession No. D84432) indicates that the revised gene order like hrcA-grpE-dnaK-dnaJ-phoH-dgk-cdd-era-tRNA( gly) synthetase alpha and beta-p23-dnaG-sigA-cccA with unidentified distal genes was established genetically on a counter clockwise orientation at 225 degrees of the linkage map.

Abstract
The loading of quin2 into oat protoplasts was carried out in an incubation medium (0.6 M sorbitol, 1 mM CaCl2, 5 mM Mes, 5 mM Tris, 0.05% BSA, 1 mM KCl, 1 mM MgSO4 (pH 6.8)), in which we found the best viability of the protoplast and the highest membrane permeability of quin2/AM, compared with the results obtained from any other incubation medium we had tried to use. 50 microns of quin2/AM was added in the suspension medium containing 5 x 10(5)/ml of oat protoplasts, and incubation at 4 degrees C was performed for 24 h. From atomic absorption data, we confirmed that quin2 loading was 1.78 mmol per liter of cells. Red-light (660 nm) irradiation for 5 min caused an increase of the cytosolic Ca2+ concentration from 30 to 193 nM. On the other hand, a subsequent irradiation with far-red light (730 nm) for 5 min decreased it by about 48 nM. Even when the extracellular Ca2+ was completely chelated with 1 mM EDTA, red light increased the cytosolic Ca2+ concentration by about 51 nM and far-red light decreased it to 3 nM. These results imply that the Pfr form of phytochrome functions not only in the process of influx of Ca2+, but also in the mobilization process of Ca2+ from the intracellular Ca2+ pools. The fact that the Pr form of phytochrome lowers the cytosolic Ca2+ concentration is also presented in this report.

Abstract
The present study has demonstrated that one molecule of acylphosphatidylglycerol was synthesized from two molecules of phosphatidylgycerol by the transacylation reaction in which phosphatidylglycerol acted both as an acyl donor and an acceptor. Phosphatidylethanolamine was identified as an another acyl donor, participating in acylphosphatidylglycerol formation. These results are discussed in terms of a new pathway for the turnover of phosphatidylglycerol in Escherichia coli.
