Abstract
The present communication reports substantial activity of gluconeogenic fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase; EC 3.1.3.11) in three common heterosporous aquatic ferns (Marsilea minuta, Salvinia natans, and Azolla pinnata) and also describes a protocol for its partial purification from mature sporocarps of Marsilea minuta. The cytosolic FBPase, obtained from Marsilea minuta, Salvinia natans, and Azolla pinnata was recognized as gluconeogenic enzyme due to its drastic catabolic inactivation in presence of externally administered glucose and its insensitivity towards photosynthetic light illumination. Cytosolic gluconeogenic FBPase was partially purified from mature sporocarps of Marsilea minuta to about 22-fold over homogenate following low-speed centrifugation (11, 400 × g), 30–80% ammonium sulfate fractionation followed by subsequent chromatography using matrices like CM-Cellulose, Sephadex G-200, and Ultrogel AcA 34. The profile of partially purified FBPase in PAGE under non-denaturing condition was recorded. The enzyme activity increased linearly with respect to protein concentration to about 100 µg and with respect to time up to 75 minutes. Temperature optimum was found at 35 °C. The effect of substrate concentration and kinetic analyses for FBPase were carried out using D-fructose-1,6-bisphosphate (D-FBP, the substrate) in the range of 0.0 to 1.0 mM at an interval of 0.1 mM concentration. The Km value for D-FBP of FBPase was 0.06129 mM and Vmax was 4525 nmole Pi released (mg)-1 protein h-1 as determined by nonlinear regression kinetics using Prism 8 software (Graph Pad). The enzyme was functional in a constricted pH range of 7.0 to 8.0, giving maxima at pH 7.5. This cytosolic enzyme was significantly stimulated by Mg2+ and strongly inhibited by Hg2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+.

Abstract
In this Letter, we report the first measurement of the inelastic cross section for antideuteron-nucleus interactions at low particle momenta, covering a range of 0.3≤p<4 GeV/c. The measurement is carried out using p-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV, recorded with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC and utilizing the detector material as an absorber for antideuterons and antiprotons. The extracted raw primary antiparticle-to-particle ratios are compared to the results from detailed ALICE simulations based on the geant4 toolkit for the propagation of (anti)particles through the detector material. The analysis of the raw primary (anti)proton spectra serves as a benchmark for this study, since their hadronic interaction cross sections are well constrained experimentally. The first measurement of the inelastic cross section for antideuteron-nucleus interactions averaged over the ALICE detector material with atomic mass numbers ⟨A⟩=17.4 and 31.8 is obtained. The measured inelastic cross section points to a possible excess with respect to the Glauber model parametrization used in geant4 in the lowest momentum interval of 0.3≤p<0.47 GeV/c up to a factor 2.1. This result is relevant for the understanding of antimatter propagation and the contributions to antinuclei production from cosmic ray interactions within the interstellar medium. In addition, the momentum range covered by this measurement is of particular importance to evaluate signal predictions for indirect dark-matter searches.

Abstract
Thin films of ternary (FePt)100-xCux alloys were obtained by annealing of FePt (100 Å)/Cu (d Å) multilayers with d = 50 and 100 Å deposited by sputtering at room temperature on Si substrates. The evolution of structural and magnetic properties of these multilayers induced by isochronal and isothermal annealing in a vacuum has been studied using depth dependent characterization techniques. Isochronal annealing for 0.5 h at different temperatures (300 to 600 °C) showed very low interdiffusion at the interfaces with no signature of alloy phase formation. However, isothermal annealing of multilayers at 600 °C for longer times (1.5-6.5 h) showed significantly large interdiffusion accompanied by the formation of polycrystalline ternary alloy and iron silicide phases. The iron silicide formed at the substrate-film interface assists the growth of the L10 ordered ternary alloy phase, which showed different stoichiometry for different multilayers. The L10 phase formed with higher Cu content showed drastically different magnetic properties with a reduction in saturation magnetization and an increase in coercivity (∼6 kOe) at room temperature. The iron silicide formed on high temperature annealing showed ferromagnetic nature with a magnetization of ∼140 emu cm-3 at room temperature.

Probing the Effects of Strong Electromagnetic Fields with Charge-Dependent Directed Flow in Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2020; 125:022301. [PMID: 32701333 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.125.022301] [Citation(s) in RCA: 5] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/25/2019] [Revised: 04/22/2020] [Accepted: 05/19/2020] [Indexed: 06/11/2023]
Abstract
The first measurement at the LHC of charge-dependent directed flow (v_{1}) relative to the spectator plane is presented for Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. Results are reported for charged hadrons and D^{0} mesons for the transverse momentum intervals p_{T}>0.2 GeV/c and 3<p_{T}<6 GeV/c in the 5%-40% and 10%-40% centrality classes, respectively. The difference between the positively and negatively charged hadron v_{1} has a positive slope as a function of pseudorapidity η, dΔv_{1}/dη=[1.68±0.49(stat)±0.41(syst)]×10^{-4}. The same measurement for D^{0} and D[over ¯]^{0} mesons yields a positive value dΔv_{1}/dη=[4.9±1.7(stat)±0.6(syst)]×10^{-1}, which is about 3 orders of magnitude larger than the one of the charged hadrons. These measurements can provide new insights into the effects of the strong electromagnetic field and the initial tilt of matter created in noncentral heavy ion collisions on the dynamics of light (u, d, and s) and heavy (c) quarks. The large difference between the observed Δv_{1} of charged hadrons and D^{0} mesons may reflect different sensitivity of the charm and light quarks to the early time dynamics of a heavy ion collision. These observations challenge some recent theoretical calculations, which predicted a negative and an order of magnitude smaller value of dΔv_{1}/dη for both light flavor and charmed hadrons.

Abstract
The first evidence of spin alignment of vector mesons (K^{*0} and ϕ) in heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is reported. The spin density matrix element ρ_{00} is measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy (sqrt[s_{NN}]) of 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector. ρ_{00} values are found to be less than 1/3 (1/3 implies no spin alignment) at low transverse momentum (p_{T}<2 GeV/c) for K^{*0} and ϕ at a level of 3σ and 2σ, respectively. No significant spin alignment is observed for the K_{S}^{0} meson (spin=0) in Pb-Pb collisions and for the vector mesons in pp collisions. The measured spin alignment is unexpectedly large but qualitatively consistent with the expectation from models which attribute it to a polarization of quarks in the presence of angular momentum in heavy-ion collisions and a subsequent hadronization by the process of recombination.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Axillary nerve injury is a major complication of shoulder surgery during glenoid exposure. The aim of this study was to measure the mean distance between the inferior glenoid and the axillary nerve in healthy shoulders and then to compare this distance between osteoarthritic and rotator cuff deficient glenohumeral joints. METHODS The magnetic resonance images of 50 patients with normal glenohumeral joints were reviewed. The infra-glenoid tubercle was determined as a fixed point and the distance to the axillary nerve was measured. Two separate assessors measured on the same sagittal sections. With a study power of 80%, the sample needed in each comparison group was 28 patients. Measurements were then performed on scans in patients with osteoarthritis and cuff tear arthropathy. The mean distance was compared between groups. RESULTS The mean distance between the infra-glenoid tubercle and axillary nerve was 12mm (standard deviation, SD, 5.6mm) in normal shoulders, 10.6mm (SD 5.4mm) in shoulders with osteoarthritis and 9.7mm (SD 3.7mm) in those with cuff tear arthropathy. For this sample size of 50 patients with a confidence interval of 95%, the mean range is 12mm (95% CI 10.4-13.6). A comparison between normal shoulder and osteoarthritis showed a p-value of 0.3, and between normal and cuff tear arthropathy a p-value of 0.06. This was not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS The axillary nerve lies on average 12mm from the infra-glenoid tubercle. The presence of inferior osteophytes in glenohumeral osteoarthritis and the proximal migration of humeral head in cuff tear arthropathy does not seem to alter the course of the nerve significantly in relation to the inferior glenoid tubercle.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis incidence varies seasonally in many settings. However, the role of seasonal variation in reactivation vs. transmission is unclear.METHODS: We reviewed data on TB notifications in Cape Town, South Africa, from 1903 to 2017 (exclusive of 1995-2002, which were unavailable). Data from 2003 onward were stratified by HIV status, age and notification status (new vs. retreatment). We performed seasonal decomposition and time-dependent spectral analysis using wavelets to assess periodicity over time. We estimated monthly peak-to-peak seasonal amplitude of notifications as a percentage of the annual notification rate.RESULTS: A seasonal trend was intermittently detected between 1904 and 1994, particularly during periods of high notification rates, but was consistently and strongly evident between 2003 and 2017, with peaks in September through November, following winter. Among young children, a second, higher seasonal peak was observed in March. Seasonal variation was greater in children (<5 years, 54%, 95% CI 47-61; 5-14 years, 63%, 95% CI 58-69) than in adults (36%, 95% CI 33-39).CONCLUSIONS: Stronger seasonal effects were seen in children, in whom progression following recent infection is known to be the predominant driver of disease. These findings may support increased transmission in the winter as an important driver of TB in Cape Town.

Abstract
The study of the strength and behavior of the antikaon-nucleon (K[over ¯]N) interaction constitutes one of the key focuses of the strangeness sector in low-energy quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In this Letter a unique high-precision measurement of the strong interaction between kaons and protons, close and above the kinematic threshold, is presented. The femtoscopic measurements of the correlation function at low pair-frame relative momentum of (K^{+}p⊕K^{-}p[over ¯]) and (K^{-}p⊕K^{+}p[over ¯]) pairs measured in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=5, 7, and 13 TeV are reported. A structure observed around a relative momentum of 58 MeV/c in the measured correlation function of (K^{-}p⊕K^{+}p[over ¯]) with a significance of 4.4σ constitutes the first experimental evidence for the opening of the (K[over ¯]^{0}n⊕K^{0}n[over ¯]) isospin breaking channel due to the mass difference between charged and neutral kaons. The measured correlation functions have been compared to Jülich and Kyoto models in addition to the Coulomb potential. The high-precision data at low relative momenta presented in this work prove femtoscopy to be a powerful complementary tool to scattering experiments and provide new constraints above the K[over ¯]N threshold for low-energy QCD chiral models.

Abstract
Sleeping sickness is a fatal disease caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma brucei (Tb). Inosine-5’-monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH) has been proposed as a potential drug target, since it maintains the balance between guanylate deoxynucleotide and ribonucleotide levels that is pivotal for the parasite. Here we report the structure of TbIMPDH at room temperature utilizing free-electron laser radiation on crystals grown in living insect cells. The 2.80 Å resolution structure reveals the presence of ATP and GMP at the canonical sites of the Bateman domains, the latter in a so far unknown coordination mode. Consistent with previously reported IMPDH complexes harboring guanosine nucleotides at the second canonical site, TbIMPDH forms a compact oligomer structure, supporting a nucleotide-controlled conformational switch that allosterically modulates the catalytic activity. The oligomeric TbIMPDH structure we present here reveals the potential of in cellulo crystallization to identify genuine allosteric co-factors from a natural reservoir of specific compounds. Trypanosoma brucei inosine-5′-monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH) is an enzyme in the guanine nucleotide biosynthesis pathway and of interest as a drug target. Here the authors present the 2.8 Å room temperature structure of TbIMPDH determined by utilizing X-ray free-electron laser radiation and crystals that were grown in insect cells and find that ATP and GMP are bound at the canonical sites of the Bateman domains.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Statutory duty of candour was introduced in November 2014 for NHS bodies in England. Contained within the regulation were definitions regarding the threshold for what constitutes a notifiable patient safety incident. However, it can be difficult to determine when the process should be implemented. The aim of this survey was to evaluate the interpretation of these definitions by British neurosurgeons. MATERIALS AND METHODS All full (consultant) members of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons were electronically invited to participate in an online survey. Surgeons were presented with 15 cases and asked to decide in the case of each one whether they would trigger the process of duty of candour. Cases were stratified according to their likelihood and severity. RESULTS In all, 106/357 (29.7%) members participated in the survey. Responses varied widely, with almost no members triggering the process of duty of candour in cases where adverse events were common (greater than 10% likelihood) and required only outpatient follow-up (7/106; 6.6%), and almost all members doing so in cases where adverse events were rare (less than 0.1% likelihood) and resulted in death (102/106; 96.2%). However, there was clear equipoise in triggering the process of duty of candour in cases where adverse events were uncommon (0.1-10% likelihood) and resulted in moderate harm (38/106; 35.8%), severe harm (57/106; 53.8%) or death (49/106; 46.2%). CONCLUSION There is considerable nationwide variation in the interpretation of definitions regarding the threshold for duty of candour. To this end, we propose a framework for the improved application of duty of candour in clinical practice.

Measurement of ϒ(1S) Elliptic Flow at Forward Rapidity in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 123:192301. Abstract
The first measurement of the ϒ(1S) elliptic flow coefficient (v_{2}) is performed at forward rapidity (2.5<y<4) in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The results are obtained with the scalar product method and are reported as a function of transverse momentum (p_{T}) up to 15 GeV/c in the 5%-60% centrality interval. The measured ϒ(1S)v_{2} is consistent with 0 and with the small positive values predicted by transport models within uncertainties. The v_{2} coefficient in 2<p_{T}<15 GeV/c is lower than that of inclusive J/ψ mesons in the same p_{T} interval by 2.6 standard deviations. These results, combined with earlier suppression measurements, are in agreement with a scenario in which the ϒ(1S) production in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies is dominated by dissociation limited to the early stage of the collision, whereas in the J/ψ case there is substantial experimental evidence of an additional regeneration component.

Investigations of Anisotropic Flow Using Multiparticle Azimuthal Correlations in pp, p-Pb, Xe-Xe, and Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 123:142301. Abstract
Measurements of anisotropic flow coefficients (v_{n}) and their cross-correlations using two- and multiparticle cumulant methods are reported in collisions of pp at sqrt[s]=13 TeV, p-Pb at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV, Xe-Xe at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.44 TeV, and Pb-Pb at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV recorded with the ALICE detector. The multiplicity dependence of v_{n} is studied in a very wide range from 20 to 3000 particles produced in the midrapidity region |η|<0.8 for the transverse momentum range 0.2<p_{T}<3.0 GeV/c. An ordering of the coefficients v_{2}>v_{3}>v_{4} is found in pp and p-Pb collisions, similar to that seen in large collision systems, while a weak v_{2} multiplicity dependence is observed relative to nucleus-nucleus collisions in the same multiplicity range. Using a novel subevent method, v_{2} measured with four-particle cumulants is found to be compatible with that from six-particle cumulants in pp and p-Pb collisions. The magnitude of the correlation between v_{n}^{2} and v_{m}^{2}, evaluated with the symmetric cumulants SC(m,n) is observed to be positive at all multiplicities for v_{2} and v_{4}, while for v_{2} and v_{3} it is negative and changes sign for multiplicities below 100, which may indicate a different v_{n} fluctuation pattern in this multiplicity range. The observed long-range multiparticle azimuthal correlations in high multiplicity pp and p-Pb collisions can neither be described by pythia 8 nor by impact-parameter-Glasma, music, and ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics model calculations, and hence, provide new insights into the understanding of collective effects in small collision systems.

Abstract
Background Bioaerosol exposure occurs in several industries including green waste recycling, poultry farming, grain, animal feed and cotton production. Whilst several studies have investigated exposure and health effects in compost workers, the best questions to ask about health are uncertain. Aims This study aimed to develop a questionnaire to assess health symptoms in compost workers. Methods A 46-item questionnaire to ascertain possible symptoms of occupational illness related to bioaerosol exposure in a cohort of UK industrial compost workers and delivery in an interviewer-led format. The reliability of the questionnaire was assessed using Cronbach's α. A principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted to condense the questionnaire for practical purposes. Results One hundred and eleven (89%) workers completed the questionnaire. All items showed very good reliability (Cronbach's α = 0.83). After removing perfectly correlated questions from the data set, the PCA was conducted on a reduced data set of 28 items to explore underlying themes. Nine components were identified that explained 77% of the total variation. Nine of the questions removed prior to PCA due to perfect correlation were reintroduced because they added clinical value. The final questionnaire therefore consisted of 37 items and retained very adequate reliability (Cronbach's α = 0.76). Conclusions Our health questionnaire has demonstrated adequate reliability when used within this industrial composting workforce. Further applications may include health surveillance, investigating outbreaks of occupational disease or research. Future work should examine the predictive validity of the questionnaire in these settings.

Abstract
This Letter presents the first experimental observation of the attractive strong interaction between a proton and a multistrange baryon (hyperon) Ξ^{-}. The result is extracted from two-particle correlations of combined p-Ξ^{-}⊕p[over ¯]-Ξ[over ¯]^{+} pairs measured in p-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV at the LHC with ALICE. The measured correlation function is compared with the prediction obtained assuming only an attractive Coulomb interaction and a standard deviation in the range [3.6, 5.3] is found. Since the measured p-Ξ^{-}⊕p[over ¯]-Ξ[over ¯]^{+} correlation is significantly enhanced with respect to the Coulomb prediction, the presence of an additional, strong, attractive interaction is evident. The data are compatible with recent lattice calculations by the HAL-QCD Collaboration, with a standard deviation in the range [1.8, 3.7]. The lattice potential predicts a shallow repulsive Ξ^{-} interaction within pure neutron matter and this implies stiffer equations of state for neutron-rich matter including hyperons. Implications of the strong interaction for the modeling of neutron stars are discussed.

Abstract
Background. Obesity, a global health burden and one of the most deleterious diseases have substantially increased prevalence attributable to changing lifestyle of modern times. Persuasive evidence indicates obesity as an independent prognostic factor for developing malignancy in the form of breast cancer particularly in post-menopausal women.
Objective. This review aims to focus in comprehensive manner on the biochemical, hormonal and immunological pathways governing the obesity linked breast cancer so that potential treatments may be improvised consequently to provide a cure to this menace, threatening the lives of many.
Methods. Literature review of published materials that provide examination of recent or current literature on problem of obesity.
Results. Increased body fatness, mainly visceral adiposity may account for predisposing an obese individual to the risk of encountering cancer although the mechanisms for such cancers may vary depending upon the organ affected. Metabolic and biochemical alterations influencing obesity related carcinogenesis, consisting of heightened oxidative stress and bodily inflammation levels with the concomitant rise in pro-inflammatory cytokines are discussed. Pertinent references about elevated levels of serum insulin, insulin-like growth factor, sex steroids and the imbalance in adipokines (adiponectin and leptin) are included as well.
Conclusions. Persuasive evidence indicates obesity as an independent prognostic factor for developing malignancy in the form of breast cancer particularly in post-menopausal women. Generation of novel and effective therapeutic interventions for combating the ailment along with positive lifestyle modifications may be improvised consequently to provide a cure to this menace, threatening the lives of many.

Abstract
ObjectivesTo assess risk of damage to implanted neuromodulation hardware’s during dissection using the pulsed radiofrequency energy device (PlasmaBlade) in a simulated setting.DesignSimulated experiment.MethodsA simulated setting with fresh chicken breast threaded with different hardwires and PlasmaBlade in three configurations. Multiple substrates (wires), operators and observations were used representing typical hardware encountered in a functional neurosurgery service. Post dissection, the wires are inspected naked eye and under operating microscope. Induced current was assessed contemporaneously. A simple risk of physical and physiological damage is estimated.ResultsFive surgeons, of various grades, tested the PlasmaBlade at different CUT and COAG settings. Sixty dissections were undertaken. There was no structural damage and no induced current identified when PlasmaBlade was used at manufacturer recommended settings. At higher settings than would normally be used (CUT 6, COAG 5), there was opacification of insulation material of some wires (in 15 of 20 dissections; 75%), There was no dissolution of insulation even at this setting. Surgeons appreciated visibly lesser collateral damage to tissue and lesser smoke in the operative field using PlasmaBlade compared to conventional diathermy.ConclusionsWhen used at recommended settings, PlasmaBlade dissection did not cause any damage to implant wiring or tubing in this simulated setting. This report seeks to add to clinical data suggesting PlasmaBlade dissection is safe for dissection around DBS, SCS, VNS, ITB hardware.

Kumaria A, Paterson A, Sitaraman M, Basu S. WP1-21 Maximum safe resection of large medial temporal intrinsic tumours: does the outcome justify the risk? Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry 2019. Abstract
ObjectivesTo analyse on the long-term outcomes in patients undergoing maximum safe resection (MSR) for large intrinsic temporal tumours.DesignCase seriesSubjectsAll patients undergoing MSR of large medial temporal intrinsic tumours between May 2006 and February 2012 at a tertiary neurosurgical centre with a minimum follow up of 6 years.MethodsRetrospective review of hospital records.ResultsFifty-one patients underwent MSR (28 male, 23 female); age range 20–80 years (mean age 55.3). There was no difference in laterality, although dysphasia was a feature in 32% of left-sided lesions. Presenting features in general included seizures (46%), headaches (27%), hemiparesis (12%) and visual field defects (6%). Surgery was generally well tolerated (median post-operative Karnofsky score 92.5). No patients developed new dysphasia or weakness, but there was transient worsening of existing hemiparesis (n=4) and dysphasia (n=2). Other complications included CSF leak/pseudomeningocoele (n=2), oculomotor palsy (n=1) and wound infection (n=1). Histopathological casemix was GBM (50%), WHO 3 gliomas (14%), WHO 2 gliomas (10%) and metastases (4%). In total, 57% of patients received radiotherapy and 35% received chemotherapy. Survival correlated with pathology; in glioblastoma patients it ranged from 2–19 months (mean 10.4 months). Survival in grade 3 tumours ranged from 10–38 months (mean 24.4 months). 60% of patients with Grade 2 tumours are surviving symptom free with no histological upscale at 8–10 years follow-up. No patient required a second debulking procedure.ConclusionsMSR did not result in survival benefit in glioblastoma. MSR is justified in lesions with pre-operative radiological features of Grade 2 glioma.

Azimuthal Anisotropy of Heavy-Flavor Decay Electrons in p-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2019; 122:072301. Abstract
Angular correlations between heavy-flavor decay electrons and charged particles at midrapidity (|η|<0.8) are measured in p-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. The analysis is carried out for the 0%-20% (high) and 60%-100% (low) multiplicity ranges. The jet contribution in the correlation distribution from high-multiplicity events is removed by subtracting the distribution from low-multiplicity events. An azimuthal modulation remains after removing the jet contribution, similar to previous observations in two-particle angular correlation measurements for light-flavor hadrons. A Fourier decomposition of the modulation results in a positive second-order coefficient (v_{2}) for heavy-flavor decay electrons in the transverse momentum interval 1.5<p_{T}<4 GeV/c in high-multiplicity events, with a significance larger than 5σ. The results are compared with those of charged particles at midrapidity and those of inclusive muons at forward rapidity. The v_{2} measurement of open heavy-flavor particles at midrapidity in small collision systems could provide crucial information to help interpret the anisotropies observed in such systems.

Abstract
PURPOSE Repair of giant paraoesophageal herniae (GPEH) is technically challenging and requires significant experience in advanced foregut surgery. Controversy continues on suture versus mesh cruroplasty with the most recent systematic review and meta-analysis putting the onus on the operating surgeon. Study aim was to review whether the biological prosthesis (non-cross-linked bovine pericardium and porcine dermis) and the technique adopted for patients with GPEH had an influence on clinical and radiological recurrences. METHOD A retrospective analysis of a prospectively collected data of 60 consecutive patients with confirmed 5 cm hiatus hernia and ≥ 30% stomach displacement in the thorax that were operated in the upper gastrointestinal unit of a large district general hospital between September 2010 and August 2017. Pre and post-surgery Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease Questionnaire [(GORD-HRQOL)] and a follow up contrast study were completed. RESULTS 60 included 2 (3%) and 58 (97%) emergency and elective procedures respectively with a male: female ratio of 1:3, age 71* (Median) (42-89) years, BMI 29* (19-42) and 26 (43%) with ASA III/IV. Investigations confirmed 46* (37-88) mm and 42* (34-77) mm transverse and antero-posterior hiatal defect respectively with 60* (30-100)% displacement of stomach into chest. Operative time and length of stay was 180* (120-510) minutes and 2* (1-30) days respectively. One (2%) converted for bleeding and 2 (3%) peri-operative deaths. Five (8%), 5 (8%) and 4 (7%) have dysphagia, symptomatic and radiological recurrences respectively. GORD-HRQOL recorded preoperatively was 27* (10-39) dropping significantly postoperatively to 0* (0-21) (P < 0.005) with 95% patient satisfaction at a follow up of 60* (36-84) months. CONCLUSIONS Our technique of laparoscopic GPEH repair with biological prosthesis is safe with a reduced symptomatic and radiological recurrence and an acceptable morbidity and mortality.

GhSTOP1, a C2H2 type zinc finger transcription factor is essential for aluminum and proton stress tolerance and lateral root initiation in cotton. PLANT BIOLOGY (STUTTGART, GERMANY) 2019; 21:35-44. Abstract
Aluminum (Al) and proton (H+ ) ions are major acid soil stress factors deleteriously affecting plant root growth and crop yield. In our preliminary studies, cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) seedlings displayed very sensitive phenotypes to Al and H+ rhizotoxicities. Based on previous Arabidopsis results, we aimed to characterise the Al stress responsive Sensitive to Proton rhizotoxicity 1 (GhSTOP1) transcription system in cotton using RNAi-mediated down-regulation. With the help of seed embryo apex explants, we developed transgenic cotton plants overexpressing a GhSTOP1-RNAi cassette with NPTII selection. Kanamycin-tolerant T1 seedlings were further considered for Al and H+ stress tolerance studies. Down-regulation of the GhSTOP1 increased sensitivity to Al and proton rhizotoxicities, and root growth was significantly reduced in RNAi lines. The expression profile of GhALMT1 (Aluminum-activated Malate Transporter 1), GhMATE (Multidrug and Toxic Compound Extrusion), GhALS3 (Aluminium Sensitive 3) and key genes involved in the GABA shunt were down-regulated in the transgenic RNAi lines. Additionally, the lateral root initiation process was delayed and expression of GhNAC1, which is involved in lateral roots, was also suppressed in transgenic lines. Besides, overexpression of GhSTOP1 in Arabidopsis accelerated root growth and AtMATE and AtALMT1 expression under Al stress conditions. These analyses indicate that GhSTOP1 is essential for the expression of several genes which are necessary for acid soil tolerance mechanisms and lateral root initiation.

Abstract
Anti-M is a frequently detected naturally occurring antibody that has been reported in various clinical settings and also in voluntary donors. We describe here the clinical and laboratory findings of 11 cases with anti-M detected at our center. This report is a retrospective study in which we reviewed our immunohematology laboratory records for cases involving anti-M. Both donor and patient data from a 28-month period (September 2014 to December 2016) were reviewed. During this period, 11 examples of anti-M were detected (8 patients, 1 voluntary whole blood donor, and 1 hematopoietic stem cell donor. Anti-M was also detected in one external quality assessment scheme sample received during this period. In conclusion, anti-M can be detected in various clinical settings. This antibody can be clinically significant; in the laboratory, it can present as a serologic problem such as an ABO group discrepancy or an incompatible crossmatch. After detection, management and course of action is determined by both the antibody characteristics and the clinical setting. Abstract
Background Organizational stress is a significant occupational health challenge and is associated with multiple adverse health and social outcomes. Numerous studies have examined the sources of occupational stress in different workforces, but sparse evidence exists for the effectiveness of interventions to address it. Aims To evaluate interventions to reduce occupational stress in emergency department (ED) clerical staff. Methods A paper-based, self-report questionnaire examining perceived job demand and control in clerical staff in one UK ED in 2014, 2015 and 2017. Following each questionnaire round, we held focus groups with volunteer participants to discuss responses and then reported findings to management. Managers subsequently met with their workforce to develop interventions to address identified organizational stressors. Results We observed improvement in workers' perceived job control from 14.44 (13.88-15.00) in 2014 to 16.64 (15.92-17.36) in 2017 and in social support from 15.36 (14.91-15.81) in 2014 to 19.77 (19.12-20.42) in 2017, but not in work demand [10.55 (10.11-10.99) in 2014; 11.65 (10.95-12.35) in 2017]. In the focus groups, participants indicated satisfaction with the interventions implemented to address occupational stress. Conclusions The sustained improvements in addressing occupational stressors in these ED clerical workers are encouraging. Further work should examine whether similar improvements can be achieved in clinical staff and for other work stressors such as effort-reward imbalance and organizational justice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Targeted resequencing has become the most used and cost-effective approach for identifying causative mutations of Mendelian diseases both for diagnostics and research purposes. Due to very rapid technological progress, NGS laboratories are expanding their capabilities to address the increasing number of analyses. Several open source tools are available to build a generic variant calling pipeline, but a tool able to simultaneously execute multiple analyses, organize, and categorize the samples is still missing. RESULTS Here we describe VarGenius, a Linux based command line software able to execute customizable pipelines for the analysis of multiple targeted resequencing data using parallel computing. VarGenius provides a database to store the output of the analysis (calling quality statistics, variant annotations, internal allelic variant frequencies) and sample information (personal data, genotypes, phenotypes). VarGenius can also perform the "joint analysis" of hundreds of samples with a single command, drastically reducing the time for the configuration and execution of the analysis. VarGenius executes the standard pipeline of the Genome Analysis Tool-Kit (GATK) best practices (GBP) for germinal variant calling, annotates the variants using Annovar, and generates a user-friendly output displaying the results through a web page. VarGenius has been tested on a parallel computing cluster with 52 machines with 120GB of RAM each. Under this configuration, a 50 M whole exome sequencing (WES) analysis for a family was executed in about 7 h (trio or quartet); a joint analysis of 30 WES in about 24 h and the parallel analysis of 34 single samples from a 1 M panel in about 2 h. CONCLUSIONS We developed VarGenius, a "master" tool that faces the increasing demand of heterogeneous NGS analyses and allows maximum flexibility for downstream analyses. It paves the way to a different kind of analysis, centered on cohorts rather than on singleton. Patient and variant information are stored into the database and any output file can be accessed programmatically. VarGenius can be used for routine analyses by biomedical researchers with basic Linux skills providing additional flexibility for computational biologists to develop their own algorithms for the comparison and analysis of data. The software is freely available at: https://github.com/frankMusacchia/VarGenius.

Abstract
A key challenge in cell and tissue morphogenesis is to understand how a crucial balance between cell proliferation and apoptosis maintains an evolving tissue structure. These processes are mutually non-exclusive and require stiffness monitoring of the host substrate. Adhered cells actively mechanosense the tension in the extracellular matrix (ECM). They collectively alter self-organization and generate a host of tissue patterns. Using an in silico elastic fiber-network in two dimensions, we simulate cell-ECM composite structures and characterize features of the emerging tissue patterns during successive cell proliferation and apoptosis. Our data reveals that, in general, cell viability is a function of the cell-induced effective ECM stiffness supported by intercellular cooperativity. Translating this into a remodeling tissue, we find that average cell cycle duration in concert with the locally stressed regions of the ECM promote heterogeneous proliferation and apoptosis inducing finger-like protrusions along the tissue periphery - a feature normally observed during tumorigenesis. Further, we find that recovery of a scratch wound is delayed for cells harbored on a compliant or (and) in a highly collagen depleted ECM.

Abstract
Antiferromagnetic coupling between rare-earth and transition metal ferromagnetic layers gives rise to various magnetic ground states in heterostructures of these materials. Interface structure and morphology tend to play important roles in magnetic properties of such systems. Interface induced magnetization in Gd/Co heterostructures has been studied using a combination of structural and magnetic characterization techniques. The interface morphology of the Gd/Co system was varied by growing Gd/Co multilayers using magnetron sputtering under different argon partial pressures. Interfacial properties were further modified by annealing the multilayers under high vacuum. The macroscopic magnetization measurements have been correlated with depth dependent structure and magnetic properties of multilayers studied using X-ray and polarized neutron reflectometry techniques. Secondary ion mass spectrometry measurements from both as-deposited and annealed samples also confirmed modification at the interfaces. It has been shown that the interface structure, together with roughness, leads to a unique low-temperature magnetic phase characterized by twisting of Gd and Co moments.

D-Meson Azimuthal Anisotropy in Midcentral Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s]_{NN}=5.02 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2018; 120:102301. Abstract
The azimuthal anisotropy coefficient v_{2} of prompt D^{0}, D^{+}, D^{*+}, and D_{s}^{+} mesons was measured in midcentral (30%-50% centrality class) Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV, with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The D mesons were reconstructed via their hadronic decays at midrapidity, |y|<0.8, in the transverse momentum interval 1<p_{T}<24 GeV/c. The measured D-meson v_{2} has similar values as that of charged pions. The D_{s}^{+} v_{2}, measured for the first time, is found to be compatible with that of nonstrange D mesons. The measurements are compared with theoretical calculations of charm-quark transport in a hydrodynamically expanding medium and have the potential to constrain medium parameters.

Abstract
Treatment of sugarcane molasses distillery wastewater is challenging due to the presence of complex phenolic compounds (melanoidins and polyphenols) having antioxidant properties. Due to zero liquid discharge regulations, Indian distilleries continue to explore effective treatment options. This work examines the concentration of distillery wastewater by forward osmosis (FO) using aquaporin biomimetic membranes and magnesium chloride hexahydrate (MgCl2.6H2O) as draw solution. The operational parameters viz. feed solution and draw solution flow rate and draw solution concentration were optimized using 10% v/v melanoidins model feed solution. This was followed by trials with distillery wastewater. Under the conditions of this work, feed and draw flow rates of 1 L/min and draw solution concentration of 2M MgCl2.6H2O for melanoidins model solution and 3M MgCl2.6H2O for distillery wastewater were optimal for maximum rejection. Rejection of 90% melanoidins, 96% antioxidant activity and 84% COD was obtained with melanoidins model feed, with a corresponding water flux of 6.3 L/m2h. With as-received distillery wastewater, the rejection was similar (85-90%) to the melanoidins solution, but the water flux was lower (2.8 L/m2h). Water recovery from distillery wastewater over 24 h study period was higher with FO (70%) than reported for RO (35-45%). Repeated use of the FO membrane over five consecutive 24 h cycles with fresh feed and draw solutions and periodic cleaning showed consistent average water flux and rejection of the feed constituents.

Proximity effects across oxide-interfaces of superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet hybrid heterostructure. Sci Rep 2018; 8:3732. Abstract
A case study of electron tunneling or charge-transfer-driven orbital ordering in superconductor (SC)-ferromagnet (FM) interfaces has been conducted in heteroepitaxial YBa2Cu3O7(YBCO)/La0.67Sr0.33MnO3(LSMO) multilayers interleaved with and without an insulating SrTiO3(STO) layer between YBCO and LSMO. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism experiments revealed anti-parallel alignment of Mn magnetic moments and induced Cu magnetic moments in a YBCO/LSMO multilayer. As compared to an isolated LSMO layer, the YBCO/LSMO multilayer displayed a (50%) weaker Mn magnetic signal, which is related to the usual proximity effect. It was a surprise that a similar proximity effect was also observed in a YBCO/STO/LSMO multilayer, however, the Mn signal was reduced by 20%. This reduced magnetic moment of Mn was further verified by depth sensitive polarized neutron reflectivity. Electron energy loss spectroscopy experiment showed the evidence of Ti magnetic polarization at the interfaces of the YBCO/STO/LSMO multilayer. This crossover magnetization is due to a transfer of interface electrons that migrate from Ti(4+)−δ to Mn at the STO/LSMO interface and to Cu2+ at the STO/YBCO interface, with hybridization via O 2p orbitals. So charge-transfer driven orbital ordering is the mechanism responsible for the observed proximity effect and Mn-Cu anti-parallel coupling in YBCO/STO/LSMO. This work provides an effective pathway in understanding the aspect of long range proximity effect and consequent orbital degeneracy parameter in magnetic coupling.
