Abstract
Paternal and nonpaternal voles (microtus) have different arginine-vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OT) receptor patterns in the extended amygdala, a neural pathway associated with parental behavior. Using receptor autoradiography, the authors examined whether AVP and OT receptor patterns were associated with facultative paternal behavior in either sexually and parentally inexperienced or experienced meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus). Experienced, in contrast to inexperienced, males had less AVP binding in the lateral septum (LS), more AVP binding in the anterior olfactory nucleus (AON), and more OT binding in the AON, bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, LS, and lateral amygdala. Thus, specific AVP receptor patterns, which co-occur with paternal care in consistently paternal voles, also may be associated with paternal care (when present) in typically nonpaternal species. This study also demonstrated a possible relationship between OT receptor patterns and paternal state in male mammals.

Abstract
The efficacy and safety profiles of barnidipine in the treatment of hypertension were evaluated in an open parallel-group study. Fifty-nine Chinese patients with mild-to-moderate essential hypertension were randomized to receive either barnidipine or felodipine (5 mg once daily, titrated to 10 mg or 15 mg once daily, as indicated) for 12 weeks. Both drugs reduced blood pressures significantly with > or = 68% of cases obtaining marked or moderate blood pressure reduction. Mean reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure for barnidipine treatment were 23.7 +/- 13.5 mmHg and 12.7 +/- 7.9 mmHg, and for felodipine, 24.3 +/- 18.4 mmHg and 14.5 +/- 10.0 mmHg, respectively. There was no significant difference between these two drugs in anti-hypertensive effect, heart rate, laboratory measurements or incidence of adverse events. The only difference was that more patients taking felodipine experienced palpitations. We conclude that barnidipine has similar efficacy and a similar safety profile to felodipine in the treatment of mild-to-moderate essential hypertension in Chinese patients.

Abstract
The biocompatibility of material plays an important role in the bone-implant interface for the prosthetic implant fixation. The biocompatibility of implants is associated with the chemical composition, surface topography, surface energy and surface roughness of biomaterials. The effects of two factors, surface roughness and serum contents, on osteoblast behavior at the surface of Ti-6Al-4V and plasma sprayed HA coating were investigated in the experiment. The osteoblasts derived from neonatal rat calvarial were cultured in Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium (DMEM) with fetal bovine serum (FBS) on the surface of polished Ti-6Al-4V (Ti-p), grit-blasted Ti-6Al-4V (Ti-b), polished HA coating (HAC-p), and as-sprayed HA coating (HAC). Under culture medium containing 4% FBS, the level of cell attachment to the polished surface is significantly higher than the rough surface of the same experimental materials during all culture periods. Increasing the contents of FBS up to 10%, the difference of osteoblast attachment is not found between Ti-p and Ti-b. Under 4% serum condition, the cell morphology attached to smooth surfaces (Ti-p and HAC-p) is spread faster and are more flattened than the one to rough surface of the same experimental materials by SEM. After 24 h culture, the corroded cracks are easily observed at the surface of polished HA coatings, and the cell morphology on HAC-p coatings are elongated and less flattened compared with Ti-p. The result is consistent with statistical difference of cell attachment between Ti-p and HAC-p under 4% serum condition.

Abstract
Plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite (HA) coating, applied to metal substrates, can induce a direct chemical bond with bone and hence achieve a biological fixation of the implant. However, the poor bonding strength between the HA coating and the substrate has been a concern for the orthopedists. In a previous study, the zirconia-reinforced hydroxyapatite composite coatings (HA/ZrO(2)) could significantly improve the mechanical strength before and after soaking in simulated body fluid. This study aims to investigate the biological responses of osteoblasts on plasma-sprayed HA/ZrO(2) coating. The osteoblasts derived from neonatal rat calvarial were cultured in Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium (DMEM) with fetal bovine serum (FBS) on the surface of plasma-sprayed HA coating, HA/ZrO(2) coating, and ZrO(2) coating, respectively. The biological responses were investigated by the cell growth (1, 3, 5, and 10 days) and the cell morphology under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h). Examination by SEM revealed that osteoblasts on HA coatings exhibit less spreading during the medium phase (6 and 12 h), while, better morphologies were observed at the latter phases (24 and 48 h). This should be derived by the dissolution of HA coating in the culture medium. On HA/ZrO(2) coating, the cells showed the poor morphologies at the latter phases (24 and 48 h). This could be explained by the no apatite formed at the surface HA/ZrO(2) coating after soaking in simulated body fluid. The lower contents of ZrO(2) coating in HA coating and the addition of other solid solution (ZrO(2)-MgO, CaO-ZrO(2), ZrO(2)-CeO(2)) in HA coating are the two possible methods to improve the cytocompatibility of HA/ZrO(2) coating.

Abstract
A dual oscillator basis for mammalian circadian rhythms is suggested by the splitting of activity rhythms into two components in constant light and by the photoperiodic control of pineal melatonin secretion and phase-resetting effects of light. Because splitting and photoperiodism depend on incompatible environmental conditions, however, these literatures have remained distinct. The refinement of a procedure for splitting hamster rhythms in a 24-h light-dark:light-dark cycle has enabled the authors to assess the ability of each of two circadian oscillators to initiate melatonin secretion and to respond to light pulses with behavioral phase shifting and induction of Fos-immunoreactivity in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). Hamsters exposed to a regimen of afternoon novel wheel running (NWR) split their circadian rhythms into two distinct components, dividing their activity between the latter half of the night and the afternoon dark period previously associated with NWR. Plasma melatonin concentrations were elevated during both activity bouts of split hamsters but were not elevated during the afternoon period in unsplit controls. Light pulses delivered during either the nighttime or afternoon activity bout caused that activity component to phase-delay on subsequent days and induced robust expression of Fos-immunoreactivity in the SCN. Light pulses during intervening periods of locomotor inactivity were ineffective. The authors propose that NWR splits the circadian pacemaker into two distinct oscillatory components separated by approximately 180 degrees, with each expressing a short subjective night.

Abstract
During summer, female meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) maintain territories and males do not engage in paternal care. As day length shortens, territories dissolve and males nest with females and young. Because paternal behavior has never been studied in free-living meadow voles during colder months or in the laboratory under short photoperiods, the authors examined whether males housed in short day (SD) lengths exhibited more frequent or better quality paternal behavior than males housed in long day (LD) lengths. Sexually and parentally inexperienced (naive) SD males exhibited proportionally more and qualitatively better paternal care than naive LD males. SD males were more responsive than LD males to classic social cues associated with prepartum aggression inhibition and paternal onset. SD sires also displayed qualitatively better paternal behavior than LD sires. These data suggest that meadow vole paternal state is regulated by specific social and environmental cues that may contain reliable information about ecological conditions that favor paternal care.

Abstract
The phenomenon of splitting of locomotor activity rhythms in constant light has implied that the mammalian circadian pacemaker is composed of multiple interacting circadian oscillators. Exposure of male Syrian hamsters to novel running wheels also induces splitting in some reports, although novel wheel running (NWR) is better known for its effects on altering circadian phase and the length of the free-running period. In three experiments, the authors confirm and extend earlier reports of split rhythms induced by NWR. Male Syrian hamsters, entrained to LD 14:10, were transferred for 6 to 11 consecutive days to darkened novel Wahmann wheels at ZT 4 and were returned to their home cages at ZT 9. All hamsters ran robustly in the novel wheels. NWR caused a marked reorganization of home cage wheel-running behavior: Activity onsets delayed progressively with each additional day of NWR. After 11 days, activity onset in the nighttime scotophase was delayed by 7 h and disappeared completely in 2 hamsters (Experiment 1). After 6 to 7 days of NWR (Experiment 2), activity onset delayed by 5 h. Transfer of hamsters to constant darkness (DD) after 7 days of NWR revealed clearly split activity rhythms: The delayed nighttime activity bout was clearly identifiable and characterized by a short duration. A second bout associated with the former time of NWR was equally distinct and exhibited a similarly short duration. These components rejoined after 3 to 5 days in DD accomplished via delays and advances of the nighttime and afternoon components, respectively. The final experiment established that rejoining of activity components could be prevented by perpetuating the light-dark:light-dark cycle used to induce split rhythms. The data suggest that NWR causes selective phase shifting of some circadian oscillators and that component oscillators interact strongly in constant darkness.

Abstract
In voles (Microtus), central oxytocin (OT) receptor patterns are associated with interspecific social organization. Social, monogamous voles have more OT receptors in the extended amygdala than asocial, nonmonogamous voles. Nonmonogamous meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus), which exhibit seasonal changes in social organization (long day [LD] females are territorial, short day [SD] females live socially), provide a model for examining whether OT receptor patterns are associated with seasonal changes in intraspecific social behaviors. The authors examined whether sexually inexperienced (naive) SD females had more OT receptor binding than naive LD females. Naive SD females had greater OT receptor binding in the lateral septum (LS), lateral amygdala (LatAmyg), and central amygdala (CenAmyg) than less social, naive LD females. Because both SD and LD females acquire partner preferences, the authors assessed whether OT receptor binding was associated with partner preference onset. For LD females, partner preference onset corresponded with greater OT receptor binding in the anterior olfactory nucleus, LS, and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, compared with naive LD females. In contrast, naive SD females and those exhibiting partner preferences did not differ. However, SD females that failed to acquire partner preferences showed less OT binding in the LatAmyg and CenAmyg. This study is the first to show that central OT receptor patterns are associated with seasonal changes in intraspecific social organization and partner preference onset in a nonmonogamous rodent.

Abstract
Pravastatin has been shown, in an experimental model of ischemia reperfusion, to increase adenosine levels, which exert a potent and protective effect on the heart. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether pravastatin can provide cardioprotection by increased production of adenosine in patients undergoing coronary angioplasty, a clinical model of ischemia reperfusion. Thirty-five hyperlipidemic patients who underwent elective angioplasty for a major epicardial coronary artery were randomly allocated to either 3-month pravastatin or placebo before catheterization. In the placebo group, the mean ST-segment shift during the second balloon inflation was similar that observed during the first inflation, whereas in the preconditioned patients, the shift was significantly less, which is consistent with ischemic preconditioning. In the pravastatin-treated patients, the changes of ST-segment shift were similar between the first and second balloon inflations. In contrast, the patients who received aminophylline developed higher ST-segment shifts during the first and second inflations than those in the pravastatin-treated group alone. Measurements of chest pain score and myocardial lactate extraction ratios during inflation mirrored those of the ST-segment shift. The present study demonstrates that administration of pravastatin results in a significant gain in tolerance to ischemia during angioplasty. The effect of pravastatin was abolished by aminophylline, suggesting that the cardioprotective effect of pravastatin may result from activation of adenosine receptors.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the patterns of computer usage among adolescents in Hong Kong and to examine whether computer usage is associated with less physical activity and social support among adolescents. METHODS A total of 2110 secondary school students (52% boys and 48% girls) in Hong Kong completed a set of questionnaires to measure their computer usage and lifestyle. Mean age of the respondents was 14.16 years (SD = 1.81 years). Computer usage was taped by asking the students to indicate how much time (in minutes) they spent on the computer each day for doing homework assignments; playing computer games; "surfing" the Internet; and communicating with others. The students also provided information on their social-physical lifestyle. Student's t-tests and analysis of variance were used to examine group differences. Pearson product moment correlations were used to explore relationships between computer usage and lifestyle. RESULTS Boys who use computers for doing homework, "surfing" the Internet, and communicating with others engage in more social-physical activities than others. Boys who use computers to play games tend to be more social-behaviorally inactive. For girls, patterns of computer usage are not related to lifestyle. CONCLUSIONS Computer users tended to engage in social-physical activities more frequently and had higher social support than nonusers. But among computer users, the amount of time spent daily on the computer was not associated with lifestyle. Instead, patterns of computer usage are more related to lifestyle and the relationship is moderated by gender.

Abstract
Cilostazol, a novel oral phosphodiesterase inhibitor, has shown consistent improvement in exercise tolerance in patients with intermittent claudication (IC). In addition to this effect, cilostazol has previously been shown to have beneficial effects on the dyslipidemia, i.e., combination of high triglycerides with low high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) suppresses the activity of lipoprotein lipase, which modulates the metabolism of triglycerides and HDL-C. To determine whether a reduction of IL-6 contributes to the improvement of lipid profiles, we prospectively investigated the effect of cilostazol (n=16, 100 mg, twice daily) on the changes of lipid profiles and on the association with the changes of IL-6 compared with those of pentoxifylline (n=16, 400 mg, bid) in patients with IC. After eight weeks of administration of cilostazol to patients with IC, walking distances were increased, associated with a 29% decrease in plasma triglycerides and a 13% increase in HDL-C. No significant changes of lipid profiles in the pentoxifylline and placebo groups were observed although a similar improvement in walking distances was achieved in the pentoxifylline group. IL-6 levels were significantly reduced in patients receiving cilostazol as compared with those receiving placebo or pentoxifylline. The cilostazol-induced changes in the IL-6 were positively related to those of triglycerides in the cilostazol group (r=0.63, P<0.05) and negatively related to those of HDL-C (r=-0.55, P<0.05). These findings suggest that in addition to consistent improvement of exercise tolerance, cilostazol may improve lipid profiles by reducing IL-6 release. However, pentoxifylline did not affect lipid profiles although a similar improvement of maximal walking distance (MWD) was achieved.

Abstract
Social interactions between conspecifics is a type of nonphotic zeitgeber common to several species. In the diurnal rodent Octodon degus, social interactions enhance reentrainment after phase shifts and can act as a weak zeitgeber. Olfactory stimuli appear necessary for these effects since bulbectomy eliminates socially enhanced reentrainment. In Experiment 1, the authors examined whether stimulation of the main olfactory system was sufficient to enhance reentrainment after 6-h phase advances and delays in the adult female O. degus. When test animals received conspecific odor cues during reentrainment, they entrained 39% faster after phase advances (p < 0.05) and 33% faster after phase delays (p < 0.001) than when they did not receive odor cues. Thus, olfactory cues from distant female donors were sufficient to enhance rates of entrainment in female O. degus and provided results equivalent to earlier studies with donors and shifters housed in the cages together. In Experiment 2, the authors examined whether discrete 3-h and 1-h daily pulses of airborne odors from a group of 5 entrained female degus would be sufficient to produce entrainment of wheel-running activity in adult female conspecifics. During the period of exposure to 3-h pulses, 50% (4/8) of the subjects temporarily entrained to a 24-h cycle, while 12.5% (1/8) of the subjects fully entrained. Exposure to 1-h pulses allowed 37.5% (3/8) of the subjects to temporarily entrain and 12.5% (1/8) of the subjects to fully entrain. Duration of entrained episodes was positively correlated with psi, daily onset of activity with respect to the timing of odor exposure (Pearson r = 0.731; p < 0.05), such that animals with the entraining odor pulse beginning during subjective day (psi = 7.8 h, CT 7.8 +/- 1.4) had longer periods of entrainment (22.2 +/- 5.6 days) than animals with the entraining pulse occurring during subjective night (psi = -4.6 h; CT 19.4 +/- 0.9; 5.6 +/- 0.9 days; p < 0.001). In addition, for each animal, the combined duration of all episodes of 24-h entrainment correlated with increased period length (tau) of free-running rhythms (Pearson r = 0.733; p < 0.05). Thus, daily discrete pulses of odors with durations of either 1 or 3 h from female conspecifics were sufficient to produce both temporary and full entrainment to a 24-h cycle in the majority of female O. degus, and the likelihood of long periods of entrainment correlated with long taus and coordination of the odor pulse with mid subjective day.

Abstract
The fruiting body and culture broth of many edible mushrooms contain water-soluble polysaccharides. Numerous researchers have reported that these polysaccharides have immunoenhancing effects. In this study, Hericium erinaceus and Hericium laciniatum were separately cultivated in a shaker at 25 degrees C for 25 days. Polysaccharides were extracted from the culture broth. The molecular weights were larger than 1 x 10(5) k Da and their polysaccharide components were mainly glucose in H. erinaceus and galactose in H. laciniatum. Furthermore, we investigated these two purified water-soluble polysaccharides for their anti-artificial pulmonary metastatic tumor and immunoenhancing effects in ICR mice. The results revealed that both polysaccharides had significant anti-artificial pulmonary metastatic tumor effects in mice (p < 0.05). Additionally, the polysaccharide from H. erinaceus was more effective than that from H. laciniatum. However, both of the polysaccharides enhanced the increase of T cells and macrophages. The numbers of CD4+ cells and macrophages were significantly higher in the test group than in the control group (p < 0.05). From our results, no differences were found between the two purified water-soluble polysaccharides in the antitumor effects and immunoenhancing activities (p > 0.05).

Abstract
Cilostazol is a new phosphodiesterase inhibitor with anti-platelet and vasodilatory properties. Cilostazol and pentoxifylline are the only two drugs that have been approved for the treatment of patients with intermittent claudication. However, the mechanisms by which exercise tolerance is improved remain unclear. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent endothelial mitogen that results in angiogenesis when overexpressed in human subjects. To assess the potential role of VEGF in the improvement in exercise tolerance, we investigated plasma levels of VEGF in 50 patients with intermittent claudication who were allocated randomly to groups receiving cilostazol (n=17), pentoxifylline (n=17) or placebo (n=16). Patients given either cilostazol or pentoxifylline showed a significant improvements in maximal walking distance compared with the placebo group (34 m and 33 m respectively, compared with 5 m; both P<0.05). Neither cilostazol nor pentoxifylline increased the ankle-brachial index after treatment. Circulating VEGF levels were increased (from 116+/-29 to 169+/-45 pg/ml; P=0.002), and the levels of VEGF were correlated significantly with exercise tolerance in a positive direction (r=0.88, P=0.004), in those patients treated with cilostazol that did not have diabetes mellitus. In contrast, VEGF levels remained stable after the administration of pentoxifylline. These findings suggest that VEGF may contribute to the cilostazol-related improvement in exercise tolerance in non-diabetic patients. However, pentoxifylline did not affect VEGF levels, although a similar improvement in maximal walking distance was achieved. Thus the mechanisms involved in the pentoxifylline-treated group were different from those in the cilostazol-treated group, and require further study.

Abstract
PURPOSE In light of the issues associated with the psychosocial adjustment of people with epilepsy that have been widely reported, this study examined these issues within a Chinese cultural context. METHODS Fifty patients with epilepsy completed The Washington Psychosocial Inventory, the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations, and a questionnaire that assessed their psychosocial difficulties and coping styles. Multiple regression procedure was used to examine the strength of various medical and social factors in predicting the psychosocial adjustment problems of these participants. RESULTS Social factors, such as self-perception and coping strategies, were more powerful predictors of psychosocial adjustment in people with epilepsy than the medical factors associated with epilepsy. CONCLUSIONS These findings showed that psychosocial maladjustment is a significant issue for people with epilepsy in Hong Kong. The emerging importance of social factors as predictors of psychosocial adjustment in epilepsy, as compared with medical factors, highlights the need for developing tailored counseling therapy and social support groups for people with epilepsy.

Abstract
A polyphasic taxonomic study, including 16S rDNA sequence analysis, DNA-DNA hybridizations, DNA base ratio determinations, amplified 165 rDNA restriction analysis, whole-cell protein analyses and extensive biochemical characterization, was conducted to clarify the relationships of eight isolates from root nodules of Mimosa species and one isolate from sputum of a cystic fibrosis patient. All nine isolates were classified as a novel Ralstonia species, for which the name Ralstonia taiwanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LMG 19424T (= CCUG 44338T). R. taiwanensis effectively nodulated the Mimosa species and is the first beta-proteobacterium that is known to be capable of root nodule formation and nitrogen fixation.

Abstract
To identify the specific frontal and cingulate regions involved in response inhibition, five Chinese right-handed male volunteers with an attention span reaching or exceeding a 7-digit level participated in this blocked design functional magnetic resonance imaging study. Each block represented one of the two experimental conditions, the Correct Matching or the Incorrect Matching condition. In the Correct Matching condition, the subjects were required to make correct judgement of whether the two 3-digit numbers presented in succession were the same or not; whereas in the Incorrect Matching condition, the participants were instructed to inhibit the correct responses. Bilateral activations of the prefrontal and anterior cingulate as well as the left posterior cingulated cortex were observed while the subjects were exercising response inhibition. The roles of these activations in response inhibition were discussed.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare biological properties, including osteoconduction, osseointegration, and shear strength, between plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite (HA) and HA/tricalcium phosphate (TCP) coatings, using a transcortical implant model in the femora of canines. After 3 and 12 weeks of implantation, the implants with surrounding bone were assessed histologically in undecalcified sections in backscattered electron images (BEIs) under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). After short-term (3 week) follow-up, both coatings conducted new bone formation and revealed direct bone-to-coating contact. The HA/TCP coating could not enhance early host-to-coating responses. At 12 weeks, serious dissolution of the HA/TCP coatings evidently occurred. By the new bone healing index (NBHI) and apposition index (AI), we found no significant difference between HA/TCP-coated implants and HA-coated implants throughout all implant periods. At 12 weeks of implantation, some particles dissociated from the HA/TCP coating were found within the remodeling canal. After push-out measurements, the shear strength and failure mode of HA/TCP-coated implants were similar to those of HA-coated implants, and no statistical differences were found between either coating. Consequently, this study indicates that HA/TCP coatings have excellent biological response and may be considered suitable bioactive ceramic coatings for short-term clinical use.

Abstract
Pharmacological experiments have implicated a role for central arginine vasopressin (AVP) in regulating paternal behavior in monogamous prairie voles. Although nonmonogamous meadow voles exhibit appreciable paternal care when housed under winter, short day lengths (SD), no research has examined whether the same neurobiological systems are involved in regulating paternal behavior in a nonmonogamous species when it behaves paternally. The goal of these experiments was to determine whether central administration of AVP, but not cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), affected the suppression of pup-directed aggression and/or the onset of paternal behavior in meadow voles. Data from experiment 1 implicated a role for AVP in facilitating changes in male behavior: central administration of 1 ng of AVP (but not 3 ng or CSF) inhibited pup-directed aggression in previously pup-aggressive males, and 3 ng of AVP (but not 1 ng or CSF) induced paternal behavior in previously nonpaternal males. In contrast, AVP (1 and 3 ng) did not enhance paternal behavior in already paternal males. Experiment 2 tested the specificity of AVP. Previous research indicated that 24 h of unmated cohabitation with a female reliably induced paternal behavior in SD males. Hence, experiment 2 examined whether administration of a V(1a) AVP antagonist (AVPA), but not CSF, prior to 24 h of unmated cohabitation would block the onset of paternal behavior. Males that received CSF displayed paternal behavior faster and engaged in more investigatory and paternal behaviors than males that received AVPA. Thus, pharmacological experiments support the hypothesis that AVP likely regulates paternal behavior in both facultatively and consistently paternal vole species.

Abstract
This study examined the effect of exposure to the electromagnetic field emitted by mobile phones on human attention. Three measures of attention were administered to 72 teenagers, 37 of whom were mobile phone users. The results showed that the mobile phone users performed better on one of the three measures of attention than did the non-mobile phone users. The results suggest that exposure to the electromagnetic field emitted by mobile phones may have a mild facilitating effect on attention functions, which is consistent with previous observations that exposure to the electromagnetic field has a facilitating effect on cognitive processing. The possibility that mobile phone users may be naturally better at multiple tasking tasks was discussed.

Abstract
The effects of different language backgrounds on trail making tasks were examined in this study. The measures adopted were the Color Trails Test (CTT) and the Trail Making Test (TMT), the former being the culturally fair analogue of the latter. Eighty-four right-handed participants belonging to the Chinese-English Bilingual (CEB) and English Monolingual (EM) groups participated in this study. The results of between-group comparisons revealed no significant differences in performance on the two measures between our Chinese bilingual and English monolingual participants, except on the TMT-A. However, a within-group correlation indicated that performances on the TMT and CTT were highly correlated for the English sample, but not for the Chinese. These observations suggest that trail making tasks like the TMT and CTT are themselves generally fair across Chinese and English, but equivalence between them may be more language-specific. Furthermore, mastery of a language loaded on temporal sequencing like English may give an advantage in the completion of trail making tasks.

Abstract
Sex differences have been identified in a variety of circadian rhythms, including free-running rhythms, light-induced phase shifts, sleep patterns, hormonal fluctuations, and rates of reentrainment. In the precocial, diurnal rodent Octodon degus, sex differences have been found in length of free-running rhythm (tau), phase response curves, rates of reentrainment, and in the use of social cues to facilitate reentrainment. Although gonadal hormones primarily organize circadian rhythms during early development, adult gonadal hormones have activational properties on various aspects of circadian rhythms in a number of species examined. Gonadectomy of adult female O. degus did not influence tau, phase angle of entrainment, or activity patterns in previous experiments. The present experiment examined the role of gonadal hormones in adult male degus' circadian wheel-running rhythms. We predicted that male gonadal hormones would have an activational effect on some aspects of circadian rhythms, particularly those in which we see sex differences. Phase angles of entrainment, tau, length of the active period (alpha), maximum and mean activity levels, and activity amplitude were examined for intact and castrated males housed in LD 12:12. Responses to light pulses while housed in constant darkness (DD) were also compared. Castration had no significant effect on tau or light-induced phase shifts. However, castration significantly increased phase angle of entrainment and decreased activity levels. The data indicate that adult gonadal steroids are not responsible for the sex differences in endogenous circadian mechanisms of O. degus (tau, PRC), although they influence activity level and phase angle of entrainment. This is most likely due to masking properties of testosterone, similar to the activity-increasing effects of estrogen during estrus in O. degus females.

Abstract
This is a preliminary report of the quality of life of 9 people, 5 men and 4 women, in Hong Kong who underwent temporal lobectomy for seizure control. The Chinese version of World Health Organization Quality of Life Measure Abbreviated Version, validated in Hong Kong, was used as the outcome measure. Analysis suggested that the quality of life of these participants after successful temporal lobectomy was poorer than that of 157 healthy controls in the physical and psychological domains as measured. This suggests that other factors in addition to achieving complete seizure control play significant roles in promoting the quality of life of such patients.
