Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the reliability of testing pain tolerance threshold (PTT) by applying an electrical current stimulus to the alveolar ridge. Twenty volunteers studying or working at the Nihon University School of Dentistry at Matsudo participated in this study. Participants were seated comfortably on a dental chair in a quiet room during testing. A single operator obtained mucosal PTT measurements around the right greater palatine foramen using a Neurometer CPT/C(®) device (Neurotron Inc., Baltimore, MD, USA) to deliver electrical stimulation at frequencies of 5, 250 and 2000 Hz. The participant released a button to automatically discontinue the stimulus when it could no longer be tolerated. Two types of factors were confirmed: the consistency of repeated measurements and a potential carry-over effect on PTTs. The consistency and carry-over effects of pain with regard to PTT measurements were analysed via Cronbach's coefficient α. The Cronbach's coefficient α of PTTs calculated more than 6 days of PTT testing at 5, 250 and 2000 Hz was 0.97, 0.95 and 0.97, respectively, suggesting that the consistency of the measurements was excellent. The Cronbach's coefficient α calculated when the three frequencies of 5, 250 and 2000 Hz were applied in different orders was 0.91, 0.87 and 0.90, respectively, suggesting no carry-over effect. In conclusion, the measurement of PTTs at the alveolar ridge as assessed by applying an electrical current stimulus with an electro-diagnostic device exhibited excellent reliability, and thus, it constitutes a widely available option for PTT measurement in the clinical setting.

Abstract
AIMS The aims of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of nisin A to control the growth of spore-forming bacteria, Bacillus and Paenibacillus, in chilled high-fat, milk pudding and to reduce heat treatment to improve aroma and flavour. METHODS AND RESULTS Nisin A was added to milk pudding containing 5·0 and 7·5% fat to final concentrations of 40, 80, 120 and 240 IU ml(-1). Spores from Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus cereus and Paenibacillus jamilae were inoculated into samples at 10 spores ml(-1) prior to pasteurization at 130°C for 2 s. Milk pudding without inoculation was pasteurized using less heat condition (100, 110 and 120°C for 2 s) to measure the effect of adjusting the ingredients to prevent naturally occurring bacteria. The viable cells during storage at 15, 20 and 30°C showed nisin A inhibited spiked bacteria to varying degrees depending on species, sensitivities to nisin A concentration and fat content, and inhibited natural populations at 80 IU g(-1) nisin A in 5·0% fat and at 120 IU g(-1) in 7·5% fat milk pudding. An aroma compound analysis and organoleptic assessment showed processing at 110 and 120°C decreased the temperature-dependent unpleasant odours, for example, reduced dimethyl sulfide and dimethyl disulfide by 1·2-1·5 times and increased rankings in taste tests compared with 130°C treated pudding. CONCLUSIONS Nisin A was found to be effective as a natural preservative to control spoilage bacteria in high-fat milk pudding and extend its shelf life, when using reduced heat treatments to improve the flavour and aroma without compromising food safety. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This is the first report showing nisin A is effective in reducing spoilage bacteria in high-fat, chilled dessert, milk pudding. Therefore, nisin A can be used to improve milk puddings to satisfy both industry and consumer demand for food quality and safety.

Abstract
The relationship between the prosthodontic experience of dentists and satisfaction of complete denture wearers remains unknown. To investigate whether a prosthodontist's clinical experience affects treatment satisfaction of a complete denture wearer. From April 2004 to July 2006, we conducted a randomised controlled trial at two centres, including 74 edentulous patients; of these, 32 and 30 were randomly allocated to the ED or ID group, respectively. All the patients rated their satisfaction with dentures, including general satisfaction and satisfaction of chewing ability, speaking, cleaning, stability, retention, comfort and aesthetics. These satisfaction ratings were measured by a 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS). Perceived chewing ability to foods, divided into five grades, was measured using a questionnaire. The mastication index (MI) was calculated for each grade. General satisfaction and satisfaction of speaking, stability and retention were significantly higher in the ED than in the ID group (P = 0·049, 0·003, 0·019 and 0·041, respectively). No significant difference existed between the MI of the ED (71·3 ± 18·4) and ID group (64·1 ± 16·53). However, the perceived chewing ability of grade 5 food, whose texture was the hardest among all the grades, was significantly higher in the ED group than in the ID group. Within its limitations, this study showed that a clinician's prosthodontic experience affects a complete denture wearer's satisfaction ratings.

Abstract
Apraxia is a well-known disorder of praxis and is caused mainly by damage to the left parietal lobe. We presented two cases of neurodegenerative disease with a distinct disorder of praxis, predominantly involving left parietal lobe. While both patients could understand what they should do, they were not able to initiate action and often stopped during execution of actions. They had no apraxia and no temporal and spatial errors on praxis. Magnetic resonance imaging of both patients showed atrophy of the left parieto-occipital and temporo-occipital lobes, and single photon emission computed tomography showed hypoperfusion in the same lobes. Moreover, one of our cases, using [11C] PIB PET, demonstrated increased uptake in the cerebral cortices, suggesting Alzheimer's disease. The symptoms described are different from other disorders of praxis and similar to bradyphrenia or freezing.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of lower body positive pressure (LBPP) on cardiovascular responses during a 15-min walking trial in young (22.1+/-0.4 years) and elderly women (67.8+/-1.1 years). The application of 20 mm Hg LBPP reduced ground reaction forces by 31.2+/-0.5 kgw in both groups. We hypothesized that cardiovascular responses to LBPP during walking were different between the young and elderly subjects. Applying 20 mm Hg of LBPP increased diastolic and mean blood pressure but not systolic blood pressure in both groups. LBPP-induced reduction in heart rate (HR) occurred more quickly in the young group compared to the elderly group (p<0.05). Applying LBPP also decreased double product (systolic blood pressure x HR) in both groups, suggesting that LBPP reduces myocardial oxygen consumption during exercise. These results suggest that heart rate responses to LBPP during exercise vary with increasing age.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Although taxanes have become a key chemotherapeutic drug in breast cancer treatment. Taxanes inhibit the growth of cancer cells by disrupting the functioning of their microtubules; however, the microtubules of nerve cells are also affected by this process, which can cause neurological disorders. The Kampo medicine Goshajinkigan (GJG) is a traditional Japanese medicine that is used for the treatment of several neurological symptoms including pain and numbness, GJG is comprised of 10 herbs, each of which contains numerous active ingredients. Recently, GJG has been reported to prevent anticancer drug-induced peripheral neuropathy in colorectal cancer. We performed the present prospective randomized study to confirm the effects of GJG and mecobalamin (B12) against docetaxel (DOC)-associated peripheral neurotoxicity in breast cancer patients.
Patients and method: Between May 2007 and April 2011, 60 breast cancer patients were treated with DOC. Thirty-three patients (GJG group) received oral administration of 7.5 g/day GJG and 27 patients (B12 group) received oral administration of 1500 μg/day B12. The patients were treated with TC (75mg/m2 docetaxel and 600 mg/m2 cyclophosphamide) every 3 weeks for 4 cycles, docetaxel alone (100mg/m2) every 3 weeks for 4 cycles, and XT (900mg/m2 capecitabine administered orally twice a day on days 1–14 plus 60 mg/m2 docetaxel) every 3 weeks for 6 cycles. Peripheral neuropathy was evaluated during every course according to DEB-NTC (Neurotoxicity Criteria of Debiopharm), Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (NCI-CTC) ver.3.0, and a visual analogue scale (VAS).
Results: The median age of the GJG group was 58 years old (35 to 70 years old), the B12 group was 55 years old (33 to 69 years old), and they were all females. For the regimens, in the GJG group, TC, DOC only, and XT were administered in 19 cases, 13 cases and 1 case, respectively. In the B12 group, they were 15 cases, 11 cases and 12 cases, respectively. The cumulative dose of DOC was 338.5 mg/m2 in the GJG group, and 340 mg/m2 in the B12 group. Peripheral neuropathy occurred significantly less frequently in the GJG group (39.3%) than the B12 group (88.9%) (p < 0.01). In the GJG group, grade 1 DEB-NTC was observed in 2 cases, grade 2 in 5 cases and grade 3 in 5 cases. Grade 1 NCI-CTC was observed in 7 cases, grade 2 in 6 cases. In the B12 group, grades 1, 2 and 3 DEB-NTC were observed in one case, 12 cases and 12 cases, respectively; and grades 1, 2 and 3 NCI-CTC were observed in 11 cases, 12 cases and one case. The mean VAS scores for numbness after chemotherapy were 2.7 in the GJG group and 4.9 in the B12 group (p < 0.01). The incidence of grade 2/3 peripheral neuropathy was lower in the GJG group than the B12 group. Peripheral neuropathy was significantly controlled in the GJG group.
Conclusion: The present study is the first prospective control study to prove the efficacy of GJG against docetaxel-induced peripheral neuropathy in breast cancer patients. Our findings suggest that DOC-associated peripheral neurotoxicity can be suppressed by the administration of GJG. It will be necessary to confirm the usefulness of GJG in larger prospective studies.

Abstract
We present the experimental realization of nanofiber Bragg grating (NFBG) by drilling periodic nano-grooves on a subwavelength-diameter silica fiber using focused ion beam milling technique. Using such NFBG structures we have realized nanofiber cavity systems. The typical finesse of such nanofiber cavity is F ∼ 20 - 120 and the on-resonance transmission is ∼ 30 - 80%. Moreover the structural symmetry of such NFBGs results in polarization-selective modes in the nanofiber cavity. Due to the strong confinement of the field in the guided mode, such a nanofiber cavity can become a promising workbench for cavity QED.

Abstract
Background How glial cells and cytokines are associated with the progression of delayed neuronal death induced by transient global ischemia is still unclear. To further clarify this point, we studied morphological changes in glial cells (microglial cells and astrocytes), and cytokine protein levels, during the progression of neuronal cell loss in CA1 (Cornu Ammonis 1) of the hippocampus after transient global ischemia. Methods Morphological changes in glial cells were studied immuno-histochemically. Nine cytokines (IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, GM-CSF, IFN-γ and TNF-α) were simultaneously measured by a multiplexed bead-based immunoassay from 6 h to day21 after transient four vessel occlusion (4VO) in rats. Results During the process of neuronal loss, we observed four distinct phases: (1) lag phase day0-2 (no NeuN+ cell loss observed), (2) exponential phase day2-7 (NeuN+ cells reduced in number exponentially), (3) deceleration phase day7-14 (reduction rate of NeuN+ cells became low), (4) stationary phase day14 onward (NeuN+ cell loss progressed no longer). In the lag phase, activated glial cells were observed in the entire hippocampus but later were gradually restricted to CA1. Cytokine protein levels in the lag and exponential phases were lower than in the deceleration and stationary phases. IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-4, IL-6 and IFN-γ in 4VO were significantly higher in all four phases than in sham. Compared with sham level, GM-CSF was significantly high in the deceleration phase. TNF-α was significantly high in both the deceleration and stationary phases. Conclusion Ischemic stress in 4VO activated glial cells in areas beyond CA1 in the lag phase. Pyramidal neurons were injured in CA1 from the end of the lag phase and then neuronal cells reduced in CA1 in the exponential phase. After neuronal death began, the influence of dead cells on glial cells and cytokine expression gradually became stronger than the influence by ischemic stress. Therefore, from the deceleration phase, changes in glial cells and cytokine production were likely caused by dead cells. Cytokine interaction in the microenvironment may determine the functions of IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-4, IL-6 and IFN-γ in all four phases. The function of GM-CSF and TNF-α in the deceleration phase may be neurotrophic.

Abstract
AIMS To identify and characterize a new adhesin-like protein of probiotics that show specific adhesion to human blood group A and B antigens. METHODS AND RESULTS Using the BIACORE assay, the adhesion of cell surface components obtained from four lactobacilli strains that adhered to blood group A and B antigens was tested. Their components showed a significant adhesion to A and B antigens when compared to the bovine serum albumin (BSA) control. The 1 mol l(-1) GHCl fraction extracted from Lactobacillus mucosae ME-340 contained a 29-kDa band (Lam29) using SDS-PAGE. The N-terminal amino acid sequence and homology analysis showed that Lam29 was 90% similar to the substrate-binding protein of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter from Lactobacillus fermentum IFO 3956. The complete nucleotide sequence (858 bp) of Lam29 was determined and encoded a protein of 285 amino acid residues. Phylogenetic analysis and multiple sequence alignments indicated this protein may be related to the cysteine-binding transporter. CONCLUSIONS The adhesion of ME-340 strain to blood group A and B antigens was mediated by Lam29 that is a putative component of ABC transporter as an adhesin-like protein. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Lactobacillus mucosae ME-340 expressing Lam29 may be useful for competitive exclusion of pathogens via blood group antigen receptors in the human gastrointestinal mucosa and in the development of new probiotic foods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Edoxaban (the free base of DU-176b) is an oral, direct factor (F)Xa inhibitor in clinical development for the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic events. OBJECTIVES The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of edoxaban for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). PATIENTS/METHODS This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter study conducted in Japan. A total of 523 Japanese patients were assigned to receive edoxaban 5, 15, 30 or 60 mg once daily or placebo for 11-14 days. A placebo control was used as neither low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) nor fondaparinux had been approved for thromboprophylaxis at the time of the study in Japan. The primary efficacy outcome was the incidence of VTE (lower-extremity deep vein thrombosis, symptomatic pulmonary embolism or symptomatic deep vein thrombosis). The primary safety outcome was the incidence of major and clinically relevant non-major bleeding. RESULTS Edoxaban produced a significant dose-related reduction in VTE: the incidence of VTE was 29.5%, 26.1%, 12.5% and 9.1% in the edoxaban 5-, 15-, 30- and 60-mg treatment groups vs. 48.3% in the placebo group. The incidence of major and clinically relevant non-major bleeding was similar across all groups without any significant differences among edoxaban doses or between edoxaban and placebo. CONCLUSIONS Edoxaban demonstrated significant dose-dependent reductions in VTE in patients undergoing TKA with a bleeding incidence similar to placebo. Abstract
The development of a safe and effective mucosal vaccine adjuvant is a crucial step for the development of vaccines against human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV). We have previously reported that a mutant tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), mTNF-K90R, possessed strong mucosal vaccine adjuvant activities in mice. Here, we evaluated the potential of mTNF-K90R as a mucosal vaccine adjuvant for the induction of systemic and mucosal immune responses against HIV. Nasal immunization of BALB/c mice with 5 microg of an HIV gp120 env protein immunogen together with mTNF-K90R induced higher serum anti-HIV gp120 protein immunoglobulin G (IgG) responses than gp120 alone. Furthermore, mTNF-K90R induced anti-gp120 IgA responses in nasal as well as vaginal washes from immunized mice, although these were not administration sites. Again, responses with mTNF-K90R were higher than with gp120 alone. These results indicate that mTNF-K90R may be applicable as amucosal adjuvant for HIV vaccination to induce both systemic and mucosal immune responses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ras association domain family 1A (RASSF1A) is a tumor suppressor that regulates the cell cycle, apoptosis, and microtubule stability. The association between the methylation levels of RASSF1A and the prognosis of clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC) remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated this relationship to determine the prognostic value of RASSF1A methylation levels for CCRCC. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study comprised 179 Japanese patients who underwent radical or partial nephrectomy for CCRCC. The methylation level of 5' CpG islands in the RASSF1A was evaluated using combined bisulfite restriction analysis and bisulfite sequencing. RESULTS High levels of methylation in the RASSF1A promoter were significantly more frequent in grade 3 compared with grade 1 or 2 tumors (P = 0.028) and in patients with stage III or IV compared with patients with stage I or II (P = 0.043). Patients with high methylation levels had a significantly less favorable prognosis compared with those with low methylation levels (P = 0.040). Higher methylation levels were independently associated with a poor prognosis following multivariate analysis (P = 0.0053). CONCLUSION These results indicate that quantitative promoter methylation levels of the RASSF1A gene may be a useful marker to predict the prognosis of CCRCC.

Abstract
We have reviewed physiological significance of rhythmical spontaneous contractions of collecting lymphatics, which play an important role in lymph transport and seem to regulate lymph formation through changing the pacemaker sites of the rhythmic contractions and conractile patterns of lymphangions. Next, we reported experimental findings that the wall effective permeability of hydrophilic substances labelled with fluorescent dyes was evaluated in an isolated cannulated rat single lymphatic using a microscope system. With the experimental evidence, we have discussed physiological significance and crucial roles of the enrichment of albumin in lymph through the wall of small lymphatics in regulation of innate immunity. In addition, we have described the mode of action of recanalization of collecting lymphatics after excision of lymph node with special reference to clinical treatment for surgical removal of lymph nodes-mediated secondary lymphedema. Finally, we have addressed the possibility that primary tumor cells and/or metastatic carcinoma cells themselves release key chemical substances to develop environment suitable for micro-metastasis in sentinel lymph node.

Abstract
604 Background: As adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer, the addition of docetaxel to regimens containing anthracyline has been shown to be effective. However, tolerance and safety associated with the administration order of the two drugs have not been evaluated. Methods: Breast cancer patients with node-positive or high-risk patients with node-negative were eligible. The treatment completion rate and toxicity were evaluated in 2 arms who underwent a total of 6 courses of the following regimens: Arm A: 3 courses of fluorouracil 500 mg/m2, epirubicin 100 mg/m2 and cyclophosphamide 500 mg/m2 (FEC100: q3w) followed by 3 courses of docetaxel (DOC100: 100 mg/m2, q3w); and Arm B: 3 courses of DOC100 (q3w) followed by 3 courses of FEC100 (q3w). Results: June 2006 to April 2008, 42 patients were registered. To the present, analysis has been completed in 21 patients in arm A and 21 in arm B. The mean age of patients was 49.1 years and 53.8 years, respectively. In arm A, the stage of cancer was 1 in 4 patients, 2a in 10, and 2b in 7, in arm B, the stage of cancer was 1 in 3 patients, 2a in 9, and 2b in 9. The adjuvant chemotherapy completion rate was 100 % for arm A and 95.2 % for arm B. The relative dose intensity (RDI) was 94.2 % for FEC100 and 97.8 % for DOC100 in arm A, and 98.9 % for DOC100 and 95.2 % for FEC100 in arm B. In arm A, grade 3 or higher hematological toxicity was observed in 9 patients, and febrile neutropenia developed in 3 patients with FEC100. In arm B, grade 3 or higher hematological toxicity was observed in 7 patients, but febrile neutropenia was not noted in any patients. Grade 3 or higher non-hematological toxicity was observed with FEC100 in 2 patients each in the two arms. Grade 1 or 2 edema developed in 11 patients with DOC100 in the two arms. Conclusions: In both arm A and B, adverse events associated with FEC100 were frequently observed but spontaneously recovered, or adequate management was possible by supportive therapy. Adverse events associated with DOC100 were mild. The regimens in both arms A and B were safe regarding adjuvant chemotherapy for early stage breast cancer. However, DOC100 followed by FEC100 may be more tolerable and effective. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
It has been reported that patients with spinocerebellar degenerations (SCDs) have cognitive dysfunction as well as limb and truncal ataxia, dysarthria and dysphagia. We review cognitive dysfunction in common types of SCD, including spinocerebellar ataxia types 1, 2, 3, 6, and 17, dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy, Friedreich's ataxia, and multiple system atrophy. There are few studies that address cognitive function in SCD. Although there are few comparison studies among the various SCDs, cognitive dysfunction may be more common and severe in spinocerebellar ataxia type 17 and dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy. While cognitive dysfunction in SCD appears to represent frontal dysfunction, the mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction have not been directly clarified. Nevertheless, various lesions, including those in the cerebrocerebellar circuitry, cortico-striatal-thalamocortical circuitry, and the frontal lobe, may influence cognitive function to various degrees for each disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increased arterial stiffness is a well-established cardiovascular risk factor. Mechanical stimuli to artery, such as compression, elicit vasodilation and acutely decrease arterial stiffness. As whole-body vibration (WBV)-induced oscillation is propagated at least to lumbar spine, WBV mechanically stimulates abdominal and leg arteries and may decrease arterial stiffness. WBV is feasible in vulnerable and immobilized humans. Therefore, it is worthwhile to explore the possibility of WBV as a valuable adjunct to exercise training. AIM The aim of this study was to investigate the acute effects of WBV on arterial stiffness. METHODS Ten healthy men performed WBV and control (CON) trials on separate days. The WBV session consisted of 10 sets of vibration (frequency, 26 Hz) for 60 s with an inter-set rest period of 60 s. Subjects maintained a static squat position with knees bent on a platform. In the CON trial, WBV stimulation was not imposed. Blood pressure, heart rate and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), an index of arterial stiffness, were measured before and 20, 40 and 60 min after both trials. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Heart rate and blood pressure did not change from baseline after both trials. Although baPWV did not change in the CON trial (baseline vs. after 20, 40 and 60 min; 1144 +/- 35 vs. 1164 +/- 41, 1142 +/- 39, and 1148 +/- 34 cm s(-1)), baPWV decreased 20 and 40 min after the WBV trial and recovered to baseline 60 min after the trial (1137 +/- 28 vs. 1107 +/- 30, 1108 +/- 28, and 1128 +/- 25 cm s(-1)). These results suggest that WBV acutely decreases arterial stiffness.

Abstract
Wavelet analysis is applied to examine two-dimensional (2D) structures of pure electron plasma density distribution observed in a free-decaying turbulent stage starting from an unstable distribution. In contrast to the traditional Fourier analysis, the simultaneous resolution of the structures in terms of the physical coordinates and length scales (or wave numbers) allows us to discriminate instrumental dot noises without generating spurious high wave-number components that tend to distort the energy and enstrophy spectra. With this analysis at each time segment, the following features are clearly observed: Intermittency in the structures of electron density distribution, that is equivalent to the 2D vorticity distribution, is clearly demonstrated in terms of the scale-resolved kurtosis. The upward cascade of the enstrophy in the wave-number space is associated with the development of vortex filamentation in the physical space. Controlled discrimination of the coherent component in terms of the wavelet coefficients of the observed density distribution indicates significant contribution of persisting coherent vortices in steepening the energy spectra of the 2D turbulence far above the theoretically predicted power law of k(-3).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We evaluated comprehensive neuropsychological tests and regional brain blood flow to compare cognitive dysfunction between two types of multiple system atrophy: predominant cerebellar ataxia (MSA-C) and predominant parkinsonism (MSA-P). METHODS Twenty-one patients with MSA-C, 14 patients with MSA-P, and 21 age- and education-matched control subjects were subjected to neuropsychological tests and SPECT. The neuropsychological tests examined general cognition, verbal and visual memory, working memory, visuospatial and constructional ability, language, executive function, depression, and anxiety, while SPECT analysis examined brain perfusion. RESULTS Patients with MSA-P showed severe involvement of visuospatial and constructional function, verbal fluency, and executive function compared with control subjects. Patients with MSA-C showed involvement only in visuospatial and constructional function compared with control subjects and a milder degree of involvement compared with patients with MSA-P. Patients with MSA-P tended toward a wide and severe impairment in cognitive function compared with patients with MSA-C. In addition, neuropsychological impairment in patients with MSA-P was significantly correlated with a decrease in prefrontal perfusion. This significant relation was not correlated to other factors such as age, education, and severity of cerebellar ataxia and parkinsonism, which are relevant factors associated with cognitive performance. CONCLUSIONS Patients with multiple system atrophy-parkinsonism show more severe and more widespread cognitive dysfunctions than patients with multiple system atrophy-cerebellar ataxia. Our results also indicate that cognitive dysfunction in patients with multiple system atrophy-parkinsonism may be associated with prefrontal involvement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate cognitive impairment in patients with spinocerebellar ataxia type 6 (SCA6) and to verify the role of cerebellar involvement in intellectual abilities. METHODS Cognitive function was examined in 18 patients with genetically confirmed SCA6 and in 21 age and education matched controls using a test battery for attention, verbal and visuospatial memory, as well as executive function. RESULTS Verbal fluency and immediate visual memory task were markedly impaired in SCA6 compared with the control group (p = 0.007, 0.004 and 0.014, respectively). The results of the Rule Shift Cards Test was reduced in patients with SCA6, but the reduction was not significant. These cognitive dysfunctions did not correlated with CAG repeat length, age at onset, ataxic motor dysfunctional scale or depression. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrate that specific cognitive deficits occur in patients with SCA6, independent of ataxic motor dysfunction. These deficits may reflect disruption of cortico-cerebellar circuits.

Abstract
AIMS To characterize the adhesion molecule of Lactobacillus plantarum LA 318 that shows high adhesion to human colonic mucin (HCM). METHODS AND RESULTS The adhesion test used the BIACORE assay where PBS-washed bacterial cells showed a significant decrease in adherence to HCM than distilled water-washed cells. A component in the PBS wash fraction adhered to the HCM and a main protein was detected as a c. 40-kDa band using SDS-PAGE. Using homology comparisons of the N-terminal amino acid sequences compared with sequence databases, this protein was identified as glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH). The DNA sequence of LA 318 GAPDH was 100% identical to the GAPDH (gapB) of L. plantarum WCFS1. The purified GAPDH adhered to HCM. CONCLUSIONS We found the adhesin of L. plantarum LA 318 to HCM in its culture PBS wash fraction. The molecule was identified as GAPDH. Because LA 318 possesses the same adhesin as many pathogens, the lactobacilli GAPDH may compete with pathogens infecting the intestine. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This is the first report showing GAPDH expressed on the cell surface of lactobacilli adheres to mucin suggesting L. plantarum LA 318 adheres to HCM using GAPDH binding activity to colonize the human intestinal mucosa.

Abstract
Multipoint detection is an essential requirement for investigating plasma turbulence which is a highly nonlinear phenomenon in space and time. We have fabricated an array of 64-channel poloidal probes surrounding the linear cylindrical plasma named LMD-U in order to study turbulence properties, particularly the nonlinear mode couplings, in the domain of poloidal wave number and frequency. However, misalignments of probe tips produce spurious modes, which do not exist in the real plasma, to distort the precise wave number measurements. The paper presents the description of the 64-channel poloidal probe array with means to adjust the probe positions, with discussion on the effects of the misalignments on the wave number measurements.
