Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). Method: From September 2014 to February 2017, NMOSD patients with seropositive aquaporin4-IgG was enrolled through a multicenter, prospective study, and the annual recurrence rate (ARR), Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and MMF-related side effects before and after MMF treatment were compared. Results: Ninety patients were enrolled in the study. After being treated for a median of 12 months (1-30 months), the median ARR decreased from 1.1 pre-MMF to 0 post-MMF (P<0.001), and the median EDSS score decreased from 4.0 pre-MMF to 3.0 post-MMF (P<0.001). The EDSS score reduced significantly after 90 days' treatment (P<0.05). The main adverse events included the deranged liver enzymes (19%, 17/90), respiratory infection (11%, 10/90), urinary tract infection (6%, 5/90), varicella-zoster infection (6%, 5/90), anemia (6%, 5/90), leucopenia (6%, 5/90), diarrhea (2%, 2/90), hair loss (1%, 1/90); 11% (10/90) patients experienced severe adverse events, and 6% (5/90) patients discontinued MMF. Conclusions: MMF could significantly reduce the ARR and EDSS score of NMOSD. However, awareness on side effects should be raised.

Abstract
Despite intensive investigations into the Verwey phase transition of Fe3O4 over half a century, the mechanism of this phase transition remains controversial and needs further research. In this work, we build the Fe3O4/SrTiO3 multiferroic heterostructure and investigate the temperature dependence of its saturation magnetization under various electric fields. It is found that the charge-screening effect not only influences the magnetization but also induces the temperature of the Verwey phase transition shifting ~13 K. It suggests that the Verwey phase transition has certain correlations with the electron distribution and the change of the number of minority spin electrons in the trimerons plays a dominant role in the temperature shift of the phase transition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Growth-arrest-specific protein 6 (Gas6) is a vitamin K-dependent protein and involved in cell proliferation, survival, adhesion and migration . Also it has been shown to play an important role in the inflammatory response .The aim of present study was to investigate the role of Gas6 in the process of the expression of adhesion molecules and chemokines of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) induced by Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide(P.g-LPS). METHODS After up-regulation and down-regulation of the expression of Gas6, the vascular endothelial cells were stimulated with 1 mg/L P.g-LPS for 3 h and 24 h. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction(real-time PCR) was taken to detect the expression of the cell adhesion molecules:intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and E-selectin, as well as chemokines:interleukin-8 (IL-8) and monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1). Wound healing assay was taken to observe the migration ability of endothelium cells in different groups. RESULTS After 3 h of P.g-LPS stimulation, the expression of adhesion molecules and chemokine in the down-regulation group was not significantly different from that in the control group, while in the up-regulation group the decrease of E-selectin, ICAM-1, IL-8 and MCP-1 was 81%±0%, 47%±3%, 76% ± 3%, 26% ± 6% respectively. After 24 h of P.g-LPS stimulation, the expression of adhesion molecules and chemokine in down-regulation group was significantly higher than that in control group (2.06±0.07, 1.99±0.11, 3.14±0.15, 1.84±0.03 flod), while these molecules in the down-regulation group was significantly lower than in the control group (29%±1%, 62%±3%, 69%±1%, 41%±2%). Differences were statistically significant (P<0.01). Wounding healing assay showed that down-regulation of Gas6 enhanced migration ability of endothelial cells while up-regulation of Gas6 weakened this ability, which was consistent with the trend of real-time PCR result. CONCLUSION Down-regulation of the Gas6 gene enhanced the expression of ICAM-1, E-selectin, IL-8 and MCP-1 in HUVECs after P.g- LPS stimulating, while up-regulaiton of the Gas6 gene weakened the expression of ICAM-1, E-selectin, IL-8 and MCP-1 in HUVECs after P.g-LPS stimulating, suggesting that Gas6 may play a role in the process of endothelial cell adhesion.

Abstract
In this work, an attempt has been made to reveal critical factors dominating the crystallization and soft magnetic properties of Fe81Si x B10P8-xCu1 (x = 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8) alloys. Both melt spun and annealed alloys are characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffractometry, Mössbauer spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and magnetometry. The changes in magnetic interaction between Fe atoms and chemical homogeneity can well explain the variation of magnetic properties of Fe81Si x B10P8-xCu1 amorphous alloys. The density of nucleation sites in the amorphous precursors decreases in the substitution of P by Si. Meanwhile, the precipitated nanograins gradually coarsen, but the inhibiting effect of P on grain growth diminishes causing the increase of the crystallinity. Moreover, various site occupancies of Si are observed in the nanocrystallites and the Si occupancy in bcc Fe decreases the average magnetic moment of nanograins. Without sacrificing amorphous forming ability, we can obtain FeSiBPCu nanocrystalline alloy with excellent soft magnetic properties by optimizing the content of Si and P in the amorphous precursors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the in vitro effects of low-level laser irradiation (LLLI) on proliferation and differentiation of human adipose-derived stromal cells (hASCs). METHODS Cultured cells were exposed to different doses of LLLI with a semiconductor diode laser (980 nm; 100 mW-12 W power output). The effects of laser on proliferation were assessed daily up to seven days of culture in cells irradiated for four consecutive days with laser doses of 2, 4, 6 or 8 J/cm2, the cells without irradiation were used as controls. Half of the cells were changed to osteogenic medium (OM) when they had grown to 70% confluence. The hASCs both with and without osteogenic supplements were divided into three groups, and each group was irradiated at doses of 0, 2 and 4 J/cm2. In order to examine the in vitro effects of LLLI on osteogenic differentiation of hASCs, the alkaline phosphatase activity was assessed on day 7, and alizarin red staining (AR-S) and quantitative detection were assessed on days 14 and 21. The expression of osteoblast master genes (ALP and Runx2) were tested on days 7 and 14. RESULTS The proliferation medium(PM)+LLLI4 J/cm2 group had the highest multiplication rate. In the groups with osteogenic supplements, LLLI increased alkaline phosphatase activity and mineralized nodule formation, and stimulated the expression of ALP and Runx2. Furthermore, the effect became more obvious at high dose. CONCLUSION Our data demonstrated that hASCs proliferation and osteogenic differentiation were enhanced by LLLI. With the increase of laser dose, the effect of LLLI would be enhanced at first, and then be decreased after reaching a peak.

Abstract
Ultra-thin AlN/GaN heterostructure field-effect transistors (HFETs) with, and without, SiN passivation were fabricated by the same growth and device processes. Based on the measured DC characteristics, including the capacitance-voltage (C-V) and output current-voltage (I-V) curves, the variation of electron mobility with gate bias was found to be quite different for devices with, and without, SiN passivation. Although the AlN barrier layer is ultra thin (c. 3 nm), it was proved that SiN passivation induces no additional tensile stress and has no significant influence on the piezoelectric polarization of the AlN layer using Hall and Raman measurements. The SiN passivation was found to affect the surface properties, thereby increasing the electron density of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) under the access region. The higher electron density in the access region after SiN passivation enhanced the electrostatic screening for the non-uniform distributed polarization charges, meaning that the polarization Coulomb field scattering has a weaker effect on the electron drift mobility in AlN/GaN-based devices.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinical features in 44 patients with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM). Methods: Consecutive ADEM patients admitted to Neurology Department of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun yat-sen University during August 2009 to July 2014 were enrolled.Clinical and laboratory data of the patients were reviewed and analyzed. Results: Forty-four patients with ADEM based on the 2012 criteria were recruited, including 23 male and 21 female; 9 children, 11 teenagers and 24 adults. There were 23 monophasic ADEM (23/44, 52%) and 21 multiphasic ADEM (21/44, 48%). Fourteen patients (31.8%) had definite incentive factors within 2 weeks preceding the disease onset. The commonest presenting symptoms were fever (20/44, 45%), mental disorder (18/44, 41%), disturbance of consciousness (17/44, 39%) and seizure (12/44, 27%). The average EDSS score was (4.3±1.3), and the average mRS score was (2.7±0.9). Abnormal autoimmune antibodies were detected in 10 patients. Two patients were positive for NMO-IgG, and three patients were positive for oligoclonal bands. On MRI scanning, small lesions were observed in 18 of 44 patients (18/44, 41%); large confluent white matter lesions in 10 patients (10/44, 23%); symmetric bithalamic involvement in 12 patients (12/44, 27%). Patients were mainly treated with intravenous corticosteroids (40/44, 90.9%) and immunoglobulin G ( 13/44, 29.5%) in acute phase.Regular follow-up performed in 29 patients (65.9%), and the average follow-up time was (4.2±2.3) year.A monophasic course was found in 10 patients, and multiphasic course in 19 patients. After (2.5±2.3) years, patients with multiphasic ADEM experienced their first clinical relapse, and the relapse frequency was (3.3±1.4). The average EDSS score was (3.9±2.2), and the mRS score was (2.2±1.3) in their latest relapse. In follow-up MRI for (5.3±1.9) years, lesions in 18 patients (62.1%) were partially ameliorated, while 6 patients (20.7%) persisted, and new lesions appeared in 5 patients (17.2%). For the 13 multiphasic patients with regular treatment, intravenous corticosteroids (13/13, 100.0%) and immunoglobulin G (7/13, 53.8%) were still important treatments in the acute phase, while oral steroids (12/13, 92.3%) plus immunosuppressants including azathioprine, tacrolimus, cyclosporine and rituximab were chosen in the remission phase. Conclusions: ADEM is not uncommon in adults, presenting with multiphasic course, encephalopathy features and disseminated lesions on MRI.As it shows very heterogeneous characteristics, ADEM is best viewed as a "syndrome" rather than a specific disorder.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the effect of nano hydroxyapatite on human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells(hASCs) mixture 3D bio-printing for cells' proliferation and osteogenesis. METHODS P5 hASCs were used as seed cells, 10 g/L nano hydroxyapatite was added into the cell-sodium alginate-gelatin mixture (concentration: 20 g/L sodium alginate, 80 g/L gelatin; cell density: 1×106/mL), then the mixture was printed by 3D bio-printer as the experimental group. And the cell-sodium alginate-gelatin mixture without nano hydroxyapatite was printed as the control group. Respectively, both the experimental and control groups were detected by microscope, CCK-8, Western blot and PCR at certain time pointsafter being printed, whose cells' proliferation and osteogenic differentiation were analyzed. RESULTS The microscopic observation and CCK-8 results showed that the cells of the experimental group and the control group both had a good proliferation 24 h and 7 d after being printed. The Western blot results showed that 14 d after printing, the expression of Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) had no statistical difference between the experimental group and control group. The PCR results showed that 14 d after printing, the expression of osteogenesis-related genes (RUNX2, osterix, and osteocalcin) was significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group. CONCLUSION Nano hydroxyapatite can increase osteogenic differentiation of the hASCs mixture after bio-printing, in which the cells still have a good proliferation.

Abstract
Nb films are deposited on single crystal Al2O3 (110) and MgO(111) substrates by e-beam evaporation technique. Structure of Nb films and orientation relationships (ORs) of Nb/Al2O3 and Nb/MgO interface are studied and compared by the combination of experiments and simulations. The experiments show that the Nb films obtain strong (110) texture, and the Nb film on Al2O3(110) substrate shows a higher crystalline quality than that on MgO(111) substrate. First principle calculations show that both the lattice mismatch and the strength of interface bonding play major roles in determining the crystalline perfection of Nb films and ORs between Nb films and single crystal ceramic substrates. The fundamental mechanisms for forming the interfacial configuration in terms of the lattice mismatch and the strength of interface bonding are discussed.

Abstract
The effect of selenium supplementation on recurrent hyperthyroidism caused by Graves' disease is unclear. Our study aimed to assess the efficacy of selenium supplementation therapy on recurrent Graves' disease. Forty-one patients with recurrent Graves' disease were enrolled in this study. All patients received the routine treatment using methimazole (MMI), while patients allocated to the selenium group received additional selenium therapy for 6 months. The influence of selenium supplementation on the concentrations of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), anti-TSH-receptor antibodies (TRAb), free thyroxine (FT4), and free triiodothyronine (FT3) were assessed. The remission rate was also compared between 2 groups. There was no obvious difference in the demographic data and the levels of serum FT4, FT3, TSH, and TRAb between the 2 groups at baseline. Both FT4 and FT3 decreased more at 2 months in the selenium group than the controls, while the TSH level increased more in patients receiving selenium supplementation (p<0.05). The TRAb level was significantly lower in patients receiving selenium supplementation (2.4 IU/l vs. 5.6 IU/l, p=0.04). The percentages of patients with normal TRAb level at 6 months was also significantly higher in the selenium group (19.0 vs. 0%, p=0.016). Kaplan-Meier survival curve showed patients receiving selenium supplementation had a significantly higher rate of remission than controls (Log-rank test p=0.008). In conclusion, selenium supplementation can enhance the effect of antithyroid drugs in patients with recurrent Graves' disease. Randomized trials with large number of participants are needed to validate the finding above.

Abstract
We evaluated the application of three machine learning algorithms, including logistic regression, support vector machine and back-propagation neural network, for diagnosing congenital heart disease and colorectal cancer. By inspecting related serum tumor marker levels in colorectal cancer patients and healthy subjects, early diagnosis models for colorectal cancer were built using three machine learning algorithms to assess their corresponding diagnostic values. Except for serum alpha-fetoprotein, the levels of 11 other serum markers of patients in the colorectal cancer group were higher than those in the benign colorectal cancer group (P < 0.05). The results of logistic regression analysis indicted that individual detection of serum carcinoembryonic antigens, CA199, CA242, CA125, and CA153 and their combined detection was effective for diagnosing colorectal cancer. Combined detection had a better diagnostic effect with a sensitivity of 94.2% and specificity of 97.7%; combining serum carcinoembryonic antigens, CA199, CA242, CA125, and CA153, with the support vector machine diagnosis model and back-propagation, a neural network diagnosis model was built with diagnostic accuracies of 82 and 75%, sensitivities of 85 and 80%, and specificities of 80 and 70%, respectively. Colorectal cancer diagnosis models based on the three machine learning algorithms showed high diagnostic value and can help obtain evidence for the early diagnosis of colorectal cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of artemisinin on proliferation, cell cycle and apoptosis of gallbladder cancer cells. METHODS Gallbladder carcinoma cell lines(GBC-SD and NOZ)were cultured in vitro. The effects of artemisinin in different concentration on proliferation of the two cell lines in vitro were examined using MTT assay. The cell cycle distribution of GBC-SD and NOZ cells 24 h after treatments with artemisinin(20 μmol/L) were examined using flow cytometry. The apoptosis of GBC-SD and NOZ cells 24 h after treatments with artemisinin (20 μmol/L) were examined using Annexin V/PI staining. The expressions of p-ERK1/2, CDK4, cyclin D1, p16, cytochrome C and caspase-3 were examined by Western blot assay. t-test and one way ANOVA were used to evaluate the differences between two groups and more than two groups, respectively. RESULTS The cell proliferation was significantly inhibited by artemisinin, the IC50 of artemisinin against GBC-SD and NOZ cells were 14.05 μmol/L and 12.42 μmol/L, respectively.Artemisinin induced cycle arrest, and G1 population of GBC-SD and NOZ cells increased to 74.60% and 78.86%. Cell apoptosis and apoptotic population of GBC-SD and NOZ cells were increased to 15.67% and 16.51% after dealt with artemisinin, respectively. In addition, expression of p16 was increased, and expressions of p-ERK1/2, CDK4 and cyclin D1 were down-regulated by artemisinin(all P<0.05). Cytochrome C was released from mitochondria to cytoplasm leading to the activation of caspase-3 and PARP after dealt with artemisinin(P<0.05). CONCLUSION The inhibition effect of artemisinin on the proliferation gallbladder cancer cells is accompanied by down-regulation of ERK1/2 signaling pathway, G1 phase arrest and triggering caspase-3-mediate apoptosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D is a multifunctional pro-hormone and has widespread actions in human body. Several studies showed a possible association between vitamin D deficiency and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in patients with type 2 diabetes, but no definite conclusion was available. METHODS A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to comprehensively assess the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and DPN in patients with type 2 diabetes. Data from eligible studies were pooled using meta-analysis. RESULTS Six studies that involved a total of 1,484 type 2 diabetic patients were finally included into the meta-analysis. Meta-analysis showed that there were obviously decreased serum 25(OH)D levels in DPN patients [weighted mean difference (WMD) = -6.36 ng/ml, 95 % confidence interval (95 % CI) -8.57 to -4.14, P < 0.00001]. Vitamin D deficiency was also significantly associated with increased risk of DPN in patients with type 2 diabetes [odds ratio (OR) 2.88, 95 % CI 1.84-4.50, P < 0.00001]. Meta-analysis of three studies with adjusted estimates showed that vitamin D deficiency was independently associated with increased risk of DPN in patients with type 2 diabetes (OR 2.68, 95 % CI 1.67-4.30, P < 0.0001). Sensitivity analysis showed that there was no obvious change in the pooled estimates. CONCLUSION Vitamin D is involved in the development of DPN in type 2 diabetic patients, and vitamin D deficiency is very likely to be associated with DPN in type 2 diabetic patients. Further studies are needed to validate the association between vitamin D deficiency and DPN.

Abstract
We investigated the relationship between a VEGF genetic polymorphism and B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL). A total of 102 patients with B-CLL and 124 healthy subjects were included in this study. All individuals were typed for the rs10434 in the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene using the TaqMan technique. We found that the A allele and the AA genotype of rs10434 were more frequent in B-CLL patients than in control subjects (0.54 vs 0.34; 27 vs 13%; respectively). VEGF alleles and genotypes segregated similarly in patients at different disease stages according to Rai classification. These results suggest a possible association between the VEGF polymorphism and high-risk B-CLL.

Abstract
Leiomyosarcoma of the esophagus is a rare malignant tumor with slow growth and late metastasis. The aim of this study was to reassess the clinical characteristics and treatment modality in one of the largest series of esophageal leiomyosarcomas from a single institution. From February 1973 to December 2011, 12 cases of esophageal leiomyosarcoma were identified. The principal symptoms included progressive dysphagia in 11 cases (91.7%), retrosternal/back pain in four (33.3%), weight loss in four (33.3%), upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage in two (16.7%), and emesis in two (16.7%). The average duration of symptoms was 10.6 months. The location of the primary tumor was in the middle thoracic esophagus in five cases, and lower thoracic esophagus in seven cases. Six cases were classified as the polypoid type, five cases as the infiltrative type, and only one case as the intramural type. All 12 of the patients underwent esophagectomies, and radical resections were achieved in these patients. Based on the Kaplan-Meier Method, the 3-, 5-, and 10-year survival rates were 80.0%, 58.3%, and 31.1%, respectively, with a median survival of 63 months. Five-year survival rates for patients with polypoid or intramural tumors (n = 7) was 83.3%, and for patients with infiltrative tumor (n = 5) it was 25.0%. One of the patients had tumor resected four times and survived for 161 months. In conclusion, patients presenting with esophageal leiomyosarcomas have an excellent prognosis, and radical resection may achieve acceptable results.

Abstract
Premature bolting can occur occasionally during spring cultivation of heading Chinese cabbage in East Asia when the plants encounter low temperatures (vernalization), leading to economic loss. Breeding bolting-resistant cultivars is the best choice for solving this problem. We looked for QTLs responsible for varietal differences in the bolting trait in Brassica rapa under environmental conditions that promote vernalization. To achieve this goal, we constructed a linkage map with 107 simple sequence repeats and 54 insertion/deletion markers based on a segregating population of 186 F2 individuals. The resulting map consisted of 10 linkage groups and covered a total length of 947.1 cM, with an average genetic distance of 5.84 cM between adjacent markers. QTL analysis of the bolting trait was performed by two phenotypic evaluations (bolting index and flowering time) based on the scores in an F2 population in the spring of 2010, and scores in F2:3 families in autumn 2010 and spring 2011, respectively. Twenty-six QTLs that controlled bolting were detected, accounting for 2.6 to 31.2% of the phenotypic variance. The detected QTLs with large effects co-localized mainly on linkage groups A02, A06, and A07. These QTLs may provide useful information for marker-assisted selection in a breeding program for late bolting or bolting-resistant cultivars in B. rapa crops.

Abstract
Coilia ectenes (Jordan and Seale 1905) is an important anadromous species that is an important resource at risk of extinction because of over-fishing, pollution, and coastal construction. To evaluate the genetic diversity of C. ectenes for use in breeding programs, elite microsatellite-enriched libraries were constructed and novel microsatellite markers were developed, and applied to genetically detect wild populations. Out of 92 randomly selected and sequenced clones, 89 contained a CA or GA repeat motif. Twenty-two pairs of primers were designed to investigate the polymorphism and genetic structure of a wild population collected from the Yellow River estuary, China. It was found that 2 loci were monomorphic and 20 loci were polymorphic. The number of alleles per polymorphic loci ranged from 3 to 13, with an average of 7.9. The expected heterozygosity per locus ranged from 0.05 to 0.89, with an average of 0.68. The isolated polymorphic markers are expected to be of use in future genetic breeding programs for C. ectenes, and in the assessment of genetic variation within this species.

Abstract
Recent animal studies have indicated that overexpression of the elongation of
long-chain fatty acids family member 6 (Elovl6) gene can cause
insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction. These are the major factors involved
in the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). To identify the
relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of
ELOVL6 and T2DM pathogenesis, we conducted a case-control
study of 610 Han Chinese individuals (328 newly diagnosed T2DM and 282 healthy
subjects). Insulin resistance and islet first-phase secretion function were
evaluated by assessment of insulin resistance in a homeostasis model (HOMA-IR)
and an arginine stimulation test. Three SNPs of the ELOVL6 gene
were genotyped with polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length
polymorphism, with DNA sequencing used to confirm the results. Only genotypes TT
and CT of the ELOVL6 SNP rs12504538 were detected in the
samples. Genotype CC was not observed. The T2DM group had a higher frequency of
the C allele and the CT genotype than the control group. Subjects with the CT
genotype had higher HOMA-IR values than those with the TT genotype. In addition,
no statistical significance was observed between the genotype and allele
frequencies of the control and T2DM groups for SNPs rs17041272 and rs6824447.
The study indicated that the ELOVL6 gene polymorphism
rs12504538 is associated with an increased risk of T2DM, because it causes an
increase in insulin resistance.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of ferulic acid (FA) on the up-regulation of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in lymphocytes and the molecular mechanisms involved. Lymphocytes were treated with FA (0.001-0.1 μM) for certain times. Cell viability, the activity and level of expression of HO-1, and signal pathways were analyzed. FA significantly upregulated HO-1 expression both at the level of mRNA and protein in lymphocytes. Moreover, FA induced NF-E2-related factor (Nrf2) nuclear translocation and transcriptional activity, which is upstream of FA induced HO-1 expression. In addition, lymphocytes treated with FA exhibited activation of extracellular regulated kinase (ERK) and treatments with U0126 (an ERK kinase inhibitor) attenuated the FA induced activation of Nrf2, resulting in a decrease in HO-1 expression. Zinc protoporphyrin (ZnPP, a HO-1 inhibitor) markedly suppressed cytoprotection from radiation-induced cell damage by FA. Results suggested that the ERK signaling pathway controlled the anti-oxidation of FA by regulating the expression of the antioxidant enzyme HO-1.
