Abstract
Objective:To analyze the clinical impact of upper respiratory tract concomitant diseases in pediatrics chronic rhinosinusitis(CRS) and treatment methods, efficacy and timing of the concomitant diseases.Method:Two hundred and sixty-seven cases with CRS at a tertiary children's medical center from March 2013 to March 2015 were included in this study. The cases were divided into two groups according to the concomitant diseases. 66 cases without concomitant diseases were allocated into group A;201 cases with concomitant diseases were classified into group B. Group B was further divided into two subgroups according to treatment methods: subgroup B1(97 cases) and subgroup B2(104 cases). Group A and B1 were given the same basic treatment for 3 months, while Group B2 was given the basic plus targeted treatment for the same duration. Comprehensive evaluation was conducted at 3, 6 and 15-months after commencement of treatment. Result:The therapeutic effect of Group A was significantly superior to Group B1 in 3 months(P<0.05).The clinical efficacy of Group A decreased slightly while Group B1 showed significantly reduced efficacy at 6 and 15-months (all P<0.05). Comparing Group B1 and B2, the comprehensive effect of Group B2 was considerably better than Group B1 at 3 months(P<0.05). Furthermore, Group B2 showed no decrease in efficacy while Group B1 decreased significantly at 6 and 15-month. Conclusion:Recurrent upper respiratory tract infections, allergic rhinitis, adenoid hypertrophy and chronic tonsillitis, were common the upper respiratory tract accompanying diseases in children with CRS, and they had significant influence on the efficacy and recurrence of CRS. The basic plus targeted treatment can improve the efficacy and reduce recurrence.

Abstract
Mode-locking is a milestone in the history of lasers that allows the generation of short light pulses and stabilization of lasers. This phenomenon is known to occur only in standard ordered lasers for long time and until recently it is found that it also occurs in disordered random lasers formed by nanoscale particles. Here, we report the realization of a so-called quasi mode-locking of coherent feedback random fiber laser which consists of a partially disordered linear cavity formed between a point reflector and a random distributed fiber Bragg grating array with an inserted graphene saturable absorber. We show that multi-groups of regular light pulses/sub-pulses with different repetition frequencies are generated within the quasi mode-locking regime through the so-called collective resonances phenomenon in such a random fiber laser. This work may provide a platform to study mode locking as well as pulse dynamic regulation of random lasing emission of coherent feedback disordered structures and pave the way to the development of novel multi-frequency pulse fiber lasers with potentially wide frequency tuning range.

Abstract
The -251A/T polymorphism in the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-8 (IL-8) gene has been implicated in susceptibility to periodontitis; however, this correlation has not been elucidated. In this meta-analysis, we investigated the association between the IL-8 -251A/T polymorphism and the risk of periodontitis. All eligible case-control studies published until August 2014 were identified and extracted from PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, China National Knowledge Internet, and WanFang databases. The strength of this association was accessed by pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), using either a fixed- or random-effect model. Nine case-control studies, including 1811 cases and 2043 controls, were identified. Overall, no significant associations were found between the IL-8 -251A/T polymorphism and the risk of periodontitis. The results of the analysis of periodontitis subgroup revealed similarities between chronic periodontitis and aggressive periodontitis. An additional analysis based on ethnicity revealed an association between the IL-8 -251A/T polymorphism and periodontitis among Asians (dominant model, OR = 1.784, 95%CI = 1.130-2.817) and a mixed population (AA vs TT, OR = 0.667, 95%CI = 0.471-0.974). The results of this meta-analysis suggest that the IL-8 -251A/T polymorphism may increase the risk of periodontitis in Asian and mixed populations. However, larger and well-designed studies are warranted to validate our findings.

Abstract
To meet experimental requirements, the J-TEXT electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostic is being upgraded. The front end antenna and transmission line have been modified and a new 8-channel W-band detecting unit has been developed. The improved ECE system will extend the frequency range from 94.5-124.5 GHz to 80.5-124.5 GHz. This will enable the system to cover the most plasma in the radius direction for BT = 1.8-2.2 T, and it even can cover almost the whole plasma range ρ = - 0.8-0.9 (minus means the high field side) at BT = 1.8 T. A new auxiliary channel bank with 8 narrow band, tunable yttrium iron garnet filters is planned to add to the ECE system. Due to observations along a major radius, perpendicular to BT, and relatively low electron temperature, Doppler and relativistic broadening are minimal and thus high spatial resolution measurements can be made at variable locations with these tunable channels.

Abstract
The measurement of internal magnetic fluctuation is important for the study of transport in tokamak plasmas. The runaway electron transport induced by the sawtooth crash can be used to obtain the internal magnetic fluctuation. Inversed sawtooth-like activities on hard x-ray (HXR) fluxes following sawtooth activities were observed after the application of electrode biasing on J-TEXT tokamak. The runaway diffusion coefficient Dr is deduced to be about 30 m2/s according to the time delay of HXR flux peaks to the sawtooth crashes. The averaged value of normalized magnetic fluctuation in the discharges with electrode biasing was increased to the order of 1 × 10-4.

Abstract
Calibration is a crucial procedure in electron temperature (Te) inference from a typical electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostic on tokamaks. Although the calibration provides an important multiplying factor for an individual ECE channel, the parameter ΔTe/Te is independent of any calibration. Since an ECE channel measures the cyclotron emission for a particular flux surface, a non-perturbing change in toroidal magnetic field changes the view of that channel. Hence the calibration-free parameter is a measure of Te gradient. BT-jog technique is presented here which employs the parameter and the raw ECE signals for direct measurement of electron temperature gradient scale length.

Abstract
A new 2D Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) diagnostic is being developed for the J-TEXT tokamak. It will provide the 2D electron temperature information with high spatial, temporal, and temperature resolution. The new ECEI instrument is being designed to support fundamental physics investigations on J-TEXT including MHD, disruption prediction, and energy transport. The diagnostic contains two dual dipole antenna arrays corresponding to F band (90-140 GHz) and W band (75-110 GHz), respectively, and comprises a total of 256 channels. The system can observe the same magnetic surface at both the high field side and low field side simultaneously. An advanced optical system has been designed which permits the two arrays to focus on a wide continuous region or two radially separate regions with high imaging spatial resolution. It also incorporates excellent field curvature correction with field curvature adjustment lenses. An overview of the diagnostic and the technical progress including the new remote control technique are presented.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effects of ligustilide(LIG) on extracellular recombinant human heat shock protein 60 (HSP60) induced inflammatory reactions in the THP-1 cells and the related mechanisms. Methods: THP-1 cells were differentiated to macrophages by incubation with phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA). The immunofluorescence method was used to screen the optimum transfection concentration of MyD88 siRNA.The macrophages were divided into six groups(n=3), including blank control(siRNA transfection reagent), model(siRNA transfection reagent+ HSP60 10 mg/L), negative control(MyD88 negative control+ HSP60 10 mg/L), LIG group(siRNA transfection reagent+ HSP60 10 mg/L+ LIG 20 mg/L), RNA interfering(RNAi) group(MyD88 siRNA+ HSP60 10 mg/L) and RNAi+ LIG group(MyD88 siRNA+ HSP60 10 mg/L+ LIG 20 mg/L). The protein expression level of MyD88 and phospho-nuclear factor-κB(p-NF-κB) in macrophages and the level of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) and interleukin-6(IL-6) in the culture supernatant were assessed by Western blot analyses or ELISA, respectively. Results: (1)The protein expression levels of MyD88 (1.196±0.125 vs. 0.341±0.063, P<0.01) and p-NF-κB(0.817±0.034 vs. 0.312±0.046, P<0.01) were significantly higher in the model group than those in the blank control group. The protein expression levels of MyD88(0.554±0.043) and p-NF-κB(0.538±0.063) in the RNAi group were significantly lower than those in the model group (all P<0.01) but significantly higher than those in the blank control group (all P<0.05). The protein expression levels of MyD88(0.694±0.087, P<0.05) and p-NF-κB(0.669±0.043, P<0.01)in the LIG group were markedly lower than those in the model group, but higher than those in the RNAi group (P<0.05) and the blank control group (P<0.01). The protein expression levels of MyD88(0.409±0.069) and p-NF-κB(0.395±0.046) in the RNAi+ LIG group were significantly lower than in the model group (all P<0.01) and in the LIG group(P<0.05 or 0.01), and were similar to the blank control group(P>0.05). The expression level of p-NF-κB in the RNAi+ LIG group was significantly lower than in the RNAi group (P<0.05). (2) The contents of TNF-α((312.24±28.69) ng/L vs. (5.99±1.03) ng/L, P<0.01) and IL-6((233.45±57.77) ng/L vs. (2.25±0.67) ng/L, P<0.01) were significantly higher in the model group than in the blank control group. The contents of TNF-α((235.66±25.12) ng/L) and IL-6((131.59±13.99) ng/L) were significantly lower in the RNAi group than in the model group (P<0.01). The contents of TNF-α((258.13±44.80) ng/L) and IL-6((175.92±28.27) ng/L) were also significantly lower in the LIG group than in the model group(P<0.05) while the content of IL-6 was significantly higher in the LIG group than in the RNAi group(P<0.01). The contents of TNF-α((88.57±16.10) ng/L) and IL-6((59.99±10.31) ng/L) were significantly lower in the RNAi+ LIG group than those in the model group, the RNAi group and the LIG group(P<0.05 or 0.01). Conclusions: The MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway is one of the key signaling pathways of human HSP60 induced inflammation in THP-1 cells. Ligustilide could exhibit the anti-inflammatory effect probably by inhibiting the MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway.

Abstract
The intermediate filament protein Nestin serves as a biomarker for stem cells and has been used to identify subsets of cancer stem-like cells. However, the mechanistic contributions of Nestin to cancer pathogenesis are not understood. Here, we report that Nestin binds the hedgehog pathway transcription factor Gli3 to mediate the development of medulloblastomas of the hedgehog subtype. In a mouse model system, Nestin levels increased progressively during medulloblastoma formation, resulting in enhanced tumor growth. Conversely, loss of Nestin dramatically inhibited proliferation and promoted differentiation. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the tumor-promoting effects of Nestin were mediated by binding to Gli3, a zinc finger transcription factor that negatively regulates hedgehog signaling. Nestin binding to Gli3 blocked Gli3 phosphorylation and its subsequent proteolytic processing, thereby abrogating its ability to negatively regulate the hedgehog pathway. Our findings show how Nestin drives hedgehog pathway-driven cancers and uncover in Gli3 a therapeutic target to treat these malignancies. Cancer Res; 76(18); 5573-83. ©2016 AACR.

Abstract
Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) are highly informative, polymorphic, and co-dominant Mendelian markers that provide an important genomic resource for genetic research. Recently, the use of large-scale transcriptome sequence has become a reliable and efficient approach for the identification and development of new EST-SSR markers. In this study, 8389 potential SSRs with a minimum of five repetitions for all motifs were identified from 121,210 unigenes. Gene ontology analysis indicated that the unigenes containing SSR loci participate in various biological processes of regulation, growth, development, metabolism, and apoptosis in wheat. As in many other plants, trinucleotide repeats were found to be the most abundant repeat units with a frequency of 62.33%. A subset of 300 EST-SSRs was randomly selected for the applicability of EST-SSRs to be evaluated. Of the 300 primer pairs tested, 177 (59%) yielded unambiguous PCR products among five wheat cultivars. Using the Chinese Spring nulli-tetrasomic line, 131 of the 177 EST-SSR primer pairs yielded products and 178 loci were found to be located on all the 21 wheat chromosomes. These findings suggest that the novel EST-SSR markers, as a basis for future genetic linkage and gene tagging analysis, are a valuable tool for genetic mapping, marker assisted selection, and comparative genome analysis.

Abstract
Plasmonic optical antennas and metamaterials with an ability to boost light-matter interactions for particular incidence or emission angles could find widespread use in solar harvesting, biophotonics, and in improving photon source performance at optical frequencies. However, directional plasmonic structures have generally large footprints or require complicated geometries and costly nanofabrication technologies. Here, we present a directional metasurface realized by breaking the out-of-plane symmetry of its individual elements: tilted subwavelength plasmonic gold nanopillars. Directionality is caused by the complex charge oscillation induced in each individual nanopillar, which essentially acts as a tilted dipole above a dielectric interface. The metasurface is homogeneous over a macroscopic area and it is fabricated by a combination of facile colloidal lithography and off-normal metal deposition. Fluorescence excitation and emission from dye molecules deposited on the metasurface is enhanced in specific directions determined by the tilt angle of the nanopillars. We envisage that these directional metasurfaces can be used as cost-effective substrates for surface-enhanced spectroscopies and a variety of nanophotonic applications.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate whether Stage IIIC (TanyN3M0) breast cancer can be classified further into subgroups with different prognosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and thirty-two patients with Stage IIIC breast cancer at Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital were analyzed. The disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were calculated by Kaplan-Meier method for lymph node ratio (LNR) and the number of positive lymph node (PLN). The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to determine the optimal cut-off value of the LNR and PLN. The univariate and multivariate analysis were applied to identify the prognostic factors. RESULTS The results showed that the optimal cut-off value of LNR value was 0.65, and the optimal cut-off value of PLN was 15. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed the higher value of LNR or PLN was correlated with shortened DFS (P = 0.002, P = 0.008, respectively) and OS (P < 0.001, P = 0.001, respectively). In multivariate survival analysis, the value of LNR and PLN were still remained as independent prognostic factors for DFS (P = 0.014, P = 0.013, respectively) and OS (P = 0.004, P = 0.002, respectively). CONCLUSION These results suggest that the value of LNR or PLN could be used as a new significant prognostic biomarker for Stage IIIC breast cancer patients. Stage IIIC breast cancer patients with lower value of LNR or PLN may be down staged.

Abstract
Accurate measurement of radon and its progenies is the basis to control the radon dose and reduce the risk of lung cancer caused. The precise calibration of measuring instrument is an important part of the quality control of measurements of the concentration of radon and radon progenies. To establish Chinese national standards and realise reliable calibrations of measuring instrument for radon and its progenies, a radon chamber with regulation capability of environmental parameters, aerosol and radon concentrations was designed and constructed at National Institute of Metrology (NIM). Abstract
An all-optical method to control the lasing modes of Er-doped random fiber lasers (RFLs) is proposed and demonstrated. In the RFL, an Er-doped fiber (EDF) recoded with randomly separated fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) is used as the gain medium and randomly distributed reflectors, as well as the controllable element. By combining random feedback of the FBG array and Fresnel feedback of a cleaved fiber end, multi-mode coherent random lasing is obtained with a threshold of 14 mW and power efficiency of 14.4%. Moreover, a laterally-injected control light is used to induce local gain perturbation, providing additional gain for certain random resonance modes. As a result, active mode selection of the RFL is realized by changing locations of the laser cavity that is exposed to the control light.

Abstract
HTS-1 is a new kind of pistillody wheat. All or parts of its stamen are transformed into pistils or pistil-like structures, and it has more seed sets per floret than normal wheat under normal cultivation conditions. To investigate the expression divergence in this mutant, an annealing control primer system was used to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the young spikelets. As a result, three DEGs, including HDB2, HGF2, and HCG4, were detected, with variable expression in HTS-1 and the control. After further confirmation using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis, these genes were overexpressed in HTS-1 wheat. NGF2 was identified in the double ridge to floret differentiation stages; HDB2 and HCG4 were identified in the stage of pistil and stamen-differentiating. Therefore, we inferred that the homeotic transformation of stamens into pistil-like structures occurred during the early stage of stamen development. Sequence alignment analysis revealed that HDB2 encodes a putative protein of 189 amino acids, with high homology to the DEAD-box ATP-dependent RNA helicase, and HCG4 was identical to the Chinese spring wheat cDNA clone predicted protein according to GenBank. However, NGF2 was not found to have significant similarity to any reported proteins, suggesting it is a new functional gene in wheat. The results suggest that HDB2, HCG4, and HGF2 are minor genes contributing to pistillody trait formation in HTS-1.

Abstract
To study the anomalous transport, a correlation electron cyclotron emission (CECE) was planned to be developed on J-TEXT for electron temperature fluctuation measurement. The spectral decorrelation method was employed for the CECE system. It was developed based on the previous 16-channel electron cyclotron emission system. They shared the optical transmission line and mixer. The CECE part consists of 4 channels. Two fixed frequency narrow band filters were used for two channels and two yttrium iron garnet (YIG) filters for the other two channels. To meet the measuring requirement, some tests have been taken for the YIG filters. The results show good performance of the filters. Gaussian optics is used to produce a good poloidal resolution. Wavenumbers resolved by the CECE diagnostic are k(θ) ≤ 1.5 rad/cm and k(r) ≤ 12 rad/cm. Some preliminary experiment results are also presented in this paper.

Abstract
The possibility of achieving optical magnetism at visible frequencies using plasmonic nanostructures has recently been a subject of great interest. The concept is based on designing structures that support plasmon modes with electron oscillation patterns that imitate current loops, that is, magnetic dipoles. However, the magnetic resonances are typically spectrally narrow, thereby limiting their applicability in, for example, metamaterial designs. We show that a significantly broader magnetic response can be realized in plasmonic pentamers constructed from metal-insulator-metal (MIM) sandwich particles. Each MIM unit acts as a magnetic meta-atom and the optical magnetism is rendered quasi-broadband through hybridization of the in-plane modes. We demonstrate that scattering spectra of individual MIM pentamers exhibit multiple Fano resonances and a broad subradiant spectral window that signals the magnetic interaction and a hierarchy of coupling effects in these intricate three-dimensional nanoparticle oligomers.

Abstract
Microdissection is a novel technique that can isolate specific regions of a tissue and eliminate contamination from cellular sources in adjacent areas. This method was first utilized in the study of Nestin-expressing progenitors (NEPs), a newly identified population of cells in the cerebellar external germinal layer (EGL). Using microdissection in combination with fluorescent-activated cell sorting (FACS), a pure population of NEPs was collected separately from conventional granule neuron precursors in the EGL and from other contaminating Nestin-expressing cells in the cerebellum. Without microdissection, functional analyses of NEPs would not have been possible with the current methods available, such as Percoll gradient centrifugation and laser capture microdissection. This technique can also be applied for use with various tissues that contain either recognizable regions or fluorescently-labeled cells. Most importantly, a major advantage of this microdissection technique is that isolated cells are living and can be cultured for further experimentation, which is currently not possible with other described methods.

Abstract
A novel collagenolytic serine protease (CLSP) was cloned from the hemocytes of the Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis (Es-CLSP). The full-length cDNA of Es-CLSP contains 990 nucleotides. It encodes a 270-amino acid-long peptide with the mature peptide containing 221 amino acids. It contains the conserved catalytic triad (H, D, and S). Similarity analysis shows that Es-CLSP shares high identity with CLSPs from the fiddler crab Uca pugilator. Es-CLSP mRNA expression in E. sinensis is a) tissue-related with the highest expression in hemocytes and widely distributed, b) highly responsive to Vibrio anguillarum challenge in hemocytes, and c) a different response to the intruding pathogens. The results of this study demonstrate the successful isolation of Es-CLSP and indicate that Es-CLSP is an immune-related gene, and show the possible role of CLSP in the invertebrate innate immune system.

Abstract
This paper presents the upgraded x-ray imaging crystal spectrometer (XICS) system on Joint Texas Experimental Tokamak (J-TEXT) tokamak and the latest experimental results obtained in last campaign. With 500 Hz frame rate of the new Pilatus detector and 5 cm × 10 cm spherically bent crystal, the XICS system can provide core electron temperature (Te), core ion temperature (Ti), and plasma toroidal rotation (VΦ) with a maximum temporal resolution of 2 ms for J-TEXT pure ohmic plasmas. These parameters with high temporal resolution are very useful in tokamak plasma research, especially for rapidly changed physical processes. The experimental results from the upgraded XICS system are presented.

Abstract
A simple, single-channel millimeter-wave interferometer system has been designed, fabricated, and installed on the J-TEXT tokamak. For the plasma density anticipated on J-TEXT, a solid-state source operating at 150 GHz has been chosen to minimize errors due to both vibration along the beam path and refraction in the plasma. The new aspect of the interferometer design is to use a subharmonic mixer for detection with a frequency doubled 150 GHz source. It employs a single source which is bias-tuned and modulated with a sawtooth wave form up to 100 kHz in order to generate the intermediate frequency. The 12.5 GHz voltage-controlled oscillator is multiplied to 75 GHz before a final doubler raises it to 150 GHz. A portion of the 75 GHZ power is used for the local oscillator (LO) and is directly connected to the LO input of the subharmonic mixer. The phase is evaluated by a digital phase comparator using a software-based algorithm. Detection noise limits the minimum resolvable phase change with the interferometer to ±0.05 fringe, which corresponds to an averaged electron density change along the chord of ±1.1 × 10(17) m(-2). The maximum measurable electron density is expected to be ∼9 × 10(19) m(-3). A comparison of preliminary results from the millimeter wave interferometer with that from the far-infrared hydrogen cyanide laser (wavelength of 337 μm) interferometer shows good agreement during the pulse flat-top period. The millimeter wave interferometer system will be used as a part of the density feedback control system in the future.

Abstract
As the most ancient member of the wheat gluten family, the γ-gliadin genes are suitable for phylogenetic analysis among wheat and related species. Species in the grass genus Dasypyrum have been widely used for wheat cross breeding. However, the genomic relationships among Dasypyrum species have been little studied. We isolated 22 novel γ-gliadin gene sequences, among which 10 are putatively functional. The open reading frame lengths of these sequences range from 642 to 933 bp, and these putative proteins consist of five domains. Phylogenetic analyses showed that all Dasypyrum γ-gliadin gene sequences clustered in a large group; D. villosum and tetraploid D. breviaristatum γ-gliadin gene sequences clustered in a subgroup, while diploid D. breviaristatum γ-gliadin gene sequences clustered at the edge of the subgroup. All of the Dasypyrum γ-gliadin gene sequences were absent in three major T cell-stimulatory epitopes binding to HLA-DQ2/8 in celiac disease patients. Based on the phylogenetic analyses, we suggest that D. villosum and tetraploid D. breviaristatum evolved in parallel from a diploid ancestor D. breviaristatum.

Abstract
To study equilibrium temporal dynamics and the mechanisms of magnetohydrodynamic instabilities, a 16-channel heterodyne electron cyclotron emission (ECE) radiometer has been developed to view the J-TEXT tokamak from the low field side. The ECE radiometer detects second-harmonic extraordinary mode in the frequency band of 94-125 GHz which corresponds to resonances from 1.8 T to 2.2 T. This ECE system consists of an ECE transmission line, a radio frequency unit, and two 8-channel intermediate frequency units. An in situ blackbody calibration source is applied for system calibration by comparison of hot and cold sources in order to provide an absolute temperature measurement.

Abstract
A tangential x-ray imaging crystal spectrometer (XICS) has been developed for the J-TEXT tokamak to measure the ion temperature and the plasma toroidal rotation velocity. The resonance spectral line and its satellites of Ar XVII in the ranges of 3.94 Å-4.0 Å are detected. A spherically bent quartz crystal with 2d = 4.913 Å is used in this system. The crystal has a dimension of 9 cm high and 3 cm wide and the radius of curvature 3823 mm. The XICS is designed to receive emission of Ar XVII from -10 cm to +10 cm region with a spatial resolution of 3.1 cm in the vertical direction considering the parameters of the J-TEXT plasma. The XICS has a tangential angle of 27° with respect to toroidal direction in the magnetic axis. A two-dimensional 100 mm by 300 mm multi-wire proportional counter is applied to detect the spectra.

Abstract
The runaway electrons have been measured by hard x-ray detectors and soft x-ray array in the J-TEXT tokamak. The hard x-ray radiations in the energy ranges of 0.5-5 MeV are measured by two NaI detectors. The flux of lost runaway electrons can be obtained routinely. The soft x-ray array diagnostics are used to monitor the runaway beam generated in disruptions since the soft x-ray is dominated by the interaction between runaway electrons and metallic impurities inside the plasma. With the aid of soft x-ray array, runaway electron beam has been detected directly during the formation of runaway current plateau following the disruptions.

Abstract
Leaf rolling occurs in some cereal genotypes in response to drought. We identified and made a phenotypic, cytological and physiological analysis of a leaf-rolling genotype (CMH83) of hexaploid triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack) that exhibited reduced plant height, rolled and narrow leaves. Gliadin electrophoresis of seed protein showed that CMH83 was genetically stable. Sequential Giemsa-C-banding and genomic in situ hybridization showed that CMH83 contains 12 rye chromosomes; two pairs of these chromosomes have reduced telomeric heterochromatin bands. Tests of relative water content and water loss rate of leaves of CMH83 compared with those of wheat cultivars indicated that rapid water loss after drought stress in CMH83 is associated with the leaf rolling phenotypes. Leaf rolling in CMH83 was a dominant trait in our inheritance studies. Triticale line CMH83 could be used to study drought resistance mechanisms in triticale.

Abstract
Aiganfanmai is a dwarf tetraploid wheat landrace (Triticum turgidum var. turgidum) that stably produces the semi-dwarf trait. Plant height varies from 80-105 cm under cultivation. Compared with tall durum wheat (T. turgidum var. durum) variety Langdon, we found it to have short spikes and seeds, besides a semi-dwarf character. We crossed Aiganfanmai with Langdon to analyze the genetic basis of the semi-dwarf trait. The F(2) population segregated at a 1:3 ratio for the short trait to the normal, which demonstrates that Aiganfanmai carries a recessive reduced height (Rht) gene. This gene was found to be located between the molecular markers Xgwm471 and Xgwm350 on chromosome arm 7AS by microsatellite analysis. No Rht gene had been reported from this chromosome; we designated it as Rht22. Rht 22, unlike other previously reported Rht genes, does not reduce internodal cell length. Reduced cell numbers might explain the short stem trait.

Abstract
Medulloblastoma encompasses a collection of clinically and molecularly diverse tumor subtypes that together comprise the most common malignant childhood brain tumor1–4. These tumors are thought to arise within the cerebellum, with approximately 25% originating from granule neuron precursor cells (GNPCs) following aberrant activation of the Sonic Hedgehog pathway (hereafter, SHH-subtype)3–8. The pathological processes that drive heterogeneity among the other medulloblastoma subtypes are not known, hindering the development of much needed new therapies. Here, we provide evidence that a discrete subtype of medulloblastoma that contains activating mutations in the WNT pathway effector CTNNB1 (hereafter, WNT-subtype)1,3,4, arises outside the cerebellum from cells of the dorsal brainstem. We found that genes marking human WNT-subtype medulloblastomas are more frequently expressed in the lower rhombic lip (LRL) and embryonic dorsal brainstem than in the upper rhombic lip (URL) and developing cerebellum. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and intra-operative reports showed that human WNT-subtype tumors infiltrate the dorsal brainstem, while SHH-subtype tumors are located within the cerebellar hemispheres. Activating mutations in Ctnnb1 had little impact on progenitor cell populations in the cerebellum, but caused the abnormal accumulation of cells on the embryonic dorsal brainstem that included aberrantly proliferating Zic1+ precursor cells. These lesions persisted in all mutant adult mice and in 15% of cases in which Tp53 was concurrently deleted, progressed to form medulloblastomas that recapitulated the anatomy and gene expression profiles of human WNT-subtype medulloblastoma. We provide the first evidence that subtypes of medulloblastoma have distinct cellular origins. Our data provide an explanation for the marked molecular and clinical differences between SHH and WNT-subtype medulloblastomas and have profound implications for future research and treatment of this important childhood cancer.

Abstract
Psoriasis is a skin disease associated with hyperproliferation and aberrant differentiation of keratinocytes. Our previous studies have identified the root of Rubia cordifolia L. as a potent antiproliferative and apoptogenic agent in cultured HaCaT cells (IC(50) 1.4 microg/ml). In the present study, ethanolic extract of Radix Rubiae was fractioned sequentially with hexane, ethyl acetate (EA), n-butanol and water. EA fraction was found to possess most potent antiproliferative action on HaCaT cells (IC(50) 0.9 microg/ml). Mechanistic study revealed that EA fraction induced apoptosis on HaCaT cells, as it was capable of inducing apoptotic morphological changes. Annexin V-PI staining assay also demonstrated that EA fraction significantly augmented HaCaT apoptosis. In addition, EA fraction decreased mitochondrial membrane potential in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. The standardized EA fraction was formulated into topical gel and its keratinocyte-modulating action was tested on mouse tail model. EA fraction dose-dependently increased the number and thickness of granular layer and epidermal thickness on mouse tail skin, indicative of the keratinocyte differentiation-inducing activity. Taking the in vitro and in vivo findings together, the present preclinical study confirms that EA fraction is a promising antipsoriatic agent warranting further development for psoriasis treatment.

Abstract
We simulate the effect of the chaining direction of ellipsoidal particles of polar molecule dominated electrorheological (PM-ER) fluids using commercially available COMSOL Multiphysics® software for the distribution of electric field and the total electrostatic energy. It is proved that adding ferroelectric materials to the channels parallel to the short axis would make the short axis parallel to the field direction when the ellipsoidal particles are chained under an electric field. According to our simulation, while the concentration of the channels stays constant, the greater the dielectric constant of the inserted material, the stronger the maximum local electric field will be.

Abstract
The dominant part of PBDEs residue in pig tissues was BDE-47 accounted for 48.2% approximately 66.9%, followed by BDE-99 from 15.9% to 24.2%. When the data were on lipid weight basis, the summation operatorPBDEs concentrations in tissues of individual pig showed the same order of liver > muscle, intestine > fat. Principal component analysis and PBDE congener mean concentration ratios of muscle versus liver (M/L), fat versus liver (F/L) and intestine versus liver (I/L) showed the higher accumulation ability of PBDEs in liver than in other tissues. And the PBDE mean concentration ratios of M/L, F/L and I/L had the trend of decrease with increasing bromination degree of PBDE congeners.

Abstract
Stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiormis Westend f. sp. tritici, is one of the most important foliar diseases of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) worldwide. Stripe rust resistance genes Yr27, Yr31, YrSp, YrV23, and YrCN19 on chromosome 2BS confer resistance to some or all Chinese P. striiormis f. sp. tritici races CYR31, CYR32, SY11-4, and SY11-14 in the greenhouse. To screen microsatellite (SSR) markers linked with YrCN19, F1, F2, and F3 populations derived from cross Ch377/CN19 were screened with race CYR32 and 35 SSR primer pairs. Linkage analysis indicated that the single dominant gene YrCN19 in cultivar CN19 was linked with SSR markers Xgwm410, Xgwm374, Xwmc477, and Xgwm382 on chromosome 2BS with genetic distances of 0.3, 7.9, 12.3, and 21.2 cM, respectively. Crosses of CN19 with wheat lines carrying other genes on chromosome 2B showed that all were located at different loci. YrCN19 is thus different from the other reported Yr genes in chromosomal location and resistance response and was therefore named Yr41. Prospects and strategies of using Yr41 and other Yr genes in wheat improvement for stripe rust resistance are discussed.

Abstract
Under normal incidence of circularly polarized light at room temperature, a charge current with swirly distribution has been observed in the two-dimensional electron gas in Al{0.25}Ga{0.75}N/GaN heterostructures. We believe that this anomalous charge current is produced by a radial spin current via the reciprocal spin Hall effect. It suggests a new way to research the reciprocal spin Hall effect and spin current on the macroscopic scale and at room temperature.

Abstract
Medulloblastoma is the most common malignant brain tumor in children, but the cells from which it arises remain unclear. Here we examine the origin of medulloblastoma resulting from mutations in the Sonic hedgehog (Shh) pathway. We show that activation of Shh signaling in neuronal progenitors causes medulloblastoma by 3 months of age. Shh pathway activation in stem cells promotes stem cell proliferation but only causes tumors after commitment to-and expansion of-the neuronal lineage. Notably, tumors initiated in stem cells develop more rapidly than those initiated in progenitors, with all animals succumbing by 3-4 weeks. These studies suggest that medulloblastoma can be initiated in progenitors or stem cells but that Shh-induced tumorigenesis is associated with neuronal lineage commitment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To apply the scapular free flap extended to the upper arm for resurfacing the face and neck, as well as the upper lip in one stage. METHODS The scapular free flap was designed with extended portion to the posterior and interior part of the upper arm. Then the free flap was transferred to resurface the face and neck with the routine portion and to resurface the upper lip with the extended portion. RESULTS 6 cases with extensive upper lip, facial and cervical burn scar were treated with the extended scapular free flaps. The flap size ranged from 22 cm x 11 cm to 40 cm x 9.5 cm (36.57 cm x 10.20 cm in average) for the routine portion and from 7 cm x 4 cm to 12 cm x 4 cm (10.32 cm x 3.67 cm in average) for the extended portion. All flaps survived completely. CONCLUSIONS There are direct communicating branches ("choke vessel") between the circumflex scapular artery (CSA) and the posterior humeral circumflex artery (PHCA). When the blood supply of PHCA is cut off, the CSA can provide blood supply through the communicating branches to the upper arm skin area previously nourished by PHCA. So the blood supply of the extended portion of the scapular free flap is not only from the branches of CSA, but also from the direct communicating branches between the CSA and PHCA. The extended scapular free flap has a reliable blood supply and can be applied to construct the facial and cervical scar contraction with the extended portion to resurface the upper lip. The satisfactory result can be expected.

Abstract
Oligonucleotides consisting of isonucleoside 2',5'-anhydro-3'-nucleobase-D-mannitol incorporated in 1'→4' linkage mode were synthesized. Their binding behaviors with complementary sequences were investigated via thermal denaturation and CD spectra. 6' O-methyl-2',5'-anhydro-3'-(thymin-1-yl)-D-mannitol incorporated oligonucleotide was also synthesized to investigate the effect of hydroxy groups of isonucleosides on duplex formation. The results showed that the 6'-OH free isonucleosidemodified oligonucleotide was able to form a B-like duplex with 3'→5' complementary native oligodeoxynucleotide in the 1'→4' direction. The free hydroxy group in the isonucleoside made a significant contribution to the affinity of the modified oligonucleotide to the complementary sequence, which was confirmed by molecular dynamics simulation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To provide an ideal method for flap prefabrication. METHODS The superficial temporal fascial flap has been elevated based on the superficial temporal vessels during the first-stage procedure. A subcutaneous tissue pocket with appropriate site was formed in the retroauricular and mastoid process region. The fascial flap was transferred into the pocket and fixed properly. The tissue expander was placed under the fascial flap. When the expanding process has been finished, the expander was removed and the expanded induced prefabricated skin flap of the retroauricular and mastoid process region pedicled on the superficial temporal vascular bundle was elevated and transferred to repair the facial skin defect. RESULTS There were nine cases in the group. Facial defects after resection of the melanotic nevus was repaired in 2 cases and facial defects after resection of the facial haemangioma and scar were repaired in 2 and 5 cases respectively. Pedicle length of the superficial temporal fascial flap was ranged from 5.5 cm to 7 cm (mean length 6.2 cm). The size of the fascial flaps was ranged from 4 cm x 3 cm to 7 cm x 7 cm (mean size 5.7 cm x 4.9 cm). The size of the prefabricated skin flaps was ranged from 5 cm x 5 cm to 8.0 cm x 7.5 cm (mean size 6.4 cm x 6.1 cm). The average time of the tissue expansion process is 16.1 weeks. All flaps survived postoperatively and the donor sites of the flaps were appropriated directly in 5 cases. The split-thickness skin grafting was used to recover the donor site defects in 4 cases. CONCLUSIONS The superficial temporal fascial flap owns the following advantages: the vascular pedicle is much longer and vascular supply is plentiful, and it is convenient to transfer. Meanwhile, the skin of the retroauricular and mastoid process region is most similar to that of the face in texture, color and depth. For the patients selected strictly, the technique mentioned above is somewhat an ideal method for facial defect repair.

Abstract
Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are thought to be critical for initiation and propagation of many types of cancer. Because these cells are resistant to conventional therapies, they have been very difficult to eliminate. A study in this issue of Cancer Cell suggests that brain tumor CSCs live in a "vascular niche" that promotes their long-term growth and self-renewal. Disrupting this niche impairs CSC self-renewal and thereby significantly inhibits the growth of tumors. Targeting the unique microenvironment of CSCs may be the key to effective cancer therapy.

Abstract
Gender differences of feeding pattern in normal male and female rats are well recognized. Differences in gender-related feeding patterns have also been established following a variety of experimental manipulations, such as hypothalamic lesions, nicotine infusion, and total parenteral nutrition administration. Anorexia is a common feature during tumor growth. The present study examined whether the feeding indices constituting the feeding patterns differed with the development of cancer anorexia in male and female rats. Sixteen male and 15 female Fischer-344 rats had their food intake (FI) and feeding indices, meal number (MN) and meal size (MZ), continuously measured by a computerized rat eater meter. Viable methylcholanthrene (MCA) sarcoma cells (10(6)) were inoculated subcutaneously in 10 male (M-TB) and 8 female (F-TB) Fischer rats, while the rest were controls and received an equal volume of vehicle. Tumor-bearing (TB) rats became anorectic by Day 18, when the weight of the tumor was approximately 8% of the total body weight (BW). A notable decrease in BW was observed in both M-TB and F-TB. A decrease in FI resulted from different feeding indices between male and female rats. In male rats, lower FI was due to a decrease in both MN and MZ. In female rats, lower FI was solely due to a decrease in MN. The data show that gender differences in feeding patterns, which are an external manifestation of biochemical changes in the brain, occur following development of cancer-related anorexia suggesting that besides other factors, cancer anorexia is also influenced by sex-related hormones.

Abstract
Treatment with hyperbaric O2 (HBO) ameliorates ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Since tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) plays an important role in I/R injury, we hypothesized that the effect of HBO in I/R injury may be due to its ability to inhibit TNF-alpha production. In this study, one group of rats received HBO during 60 min of ischemia (HBO group, n = 9), while control rats endured the same procedure but did not receive HBO (non-HBO, n = 9). A group of sham-operated control rats (SHAM, n = 6) underwent laparotomy without occlusion of the artery and HBO treatment. Intestinal I/R led to an increase in serum TNF-alpha concentration to [mean (SEM)] 165 (32) pg/ml (P < 0.01 vs SHAM rats). HBO attenuated this increase [34 (9) pg/ml; P<0.05 vs non-HBO group]. Intestinal I/R also resulted in a marked increase in lung myeloperoxidase content [0.62 (0.04) U/g vs 0.17 (0.02) U/g of SHAM rats, P<0.01]. HBO suppressed this increase [0.40 (0.04) U/g, P<0.05 vs non-HBO rats]. HBO ameliorated the injury to the intestine and lung. The number of neutrophils sequestered in the lung was reduced in HBO rats compared to non-HBO rats [6.4 (0.9) neutrophils/per oil field and 10.9 (2) neutrophils/per oil field, respectively; P < 0.05]. These findings demonstrate that HBO inhibits TNF-alpha production during intestinal I/R, and this reduced TNF-alpha production may be attributed to the beneficial effects of HBO.

Abstract
To elucidate the functions of grp75, CHL cells over-expressing grp75 are cultured in glucose-free medium in order to simulate energy metabolic stress. Their susceptibilities to injuries caused by glucose deprivation are assessed by trypan blue exclusion, LDH leakage measurement and cytometry analysis. Data shows a stronger resistance to glucose deprivation among cells over-expressing grp75 than among cells constitutively expressing grp75. The outcome suggests that grp75 can protect cells from injuries caused by glucose deprivation.

Abstract
Platelet activation has been suggested to play an important role in the pathogenesis of prethrombotic states and thus may be responsible for decompression illness during compressed air (scuba) diving. To investigate the effect of physical, mental, and environmental stress on platelet activation during immersion in ice-cold water, we examined 10 male breath-hold divers (BHD), 10 elite BHD (eBHD), and 10 scuba divers during immersion in an ice-covered lake at moderate altitude. Platelet activation was examined by surface expression of activation-dependent glycoproteins CD62p, CD63, and CD42a with flow cytometry 10 min before and 1 min and again 24 h after diving. Plasma epinephrine level was also measured. In addition, the relationship between the activated platelets and the epinephrine level was evaluated. The percentage of platelet activation increased from 2.1 +/- 0.4 to 5.7 +/- 0.3, 1.8 +/- 0.3 to 12.9 +/- 0.8, and 3.7 +/- 0.9 to 31.2 +/- 0.8 in BHD, eBHD, and scuba divers, respectively. The percentage of platelet activation returned to pre-immersion levels in BHD and eBHD divers 24 h after diving, but was still higher in scuba divers. A positive relationship exists between the plasma epinephrine level and the percentage of the platelet activation. This study suggests that physical and mental stress enhance platelet activation during diving in ice-cold water.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the hypothalamus, a number of interconnected foci, including the ventromedial nucleus of hypothalamus (VMN), interact to control food intake (FI). FI is a function of meal number (MN) and meal size (MZ). Because gender differences exist in feeding patterns, we aimed at investigating the role of the VMN in determining the relationship of MZ and MN in female and male rats. METHODS FI and feeding patterns of 10 female and 12 male Fischer-344 rats were studied after VMN block, achieved via stereotaxically located intra-VMN microinjection of the neuronal blocker, colchicine (0.32 microgram dissolved in 50 nL of isotonic injectate and instilled on each side into the VMN). RESULTS After colchicine injection in normal female rats, an immediate and significant increase in FI occurs as a result of the following: 1) increased MZ in dark and light phases and 2) increased light phase MN with consequent loss of the normal diurnal cycle in FI. Recovery of feeding cycle and normal vaginal smear pattern occurred by study's end. In normal male rats, VMN block resulted in the following: 1) an increase in FI resulting from increased MN occurring predominantly during the light phase, thereby 2) disrupting the usual light/dark feeding cycle. CONCLUSIONS Sexual differences in regulation of FI occur after temporary reversible VMN block: in female rats, MZ is more sensitive to experimental modulation, whereas in male rats it is MN.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to test the possibility that the catecholaminergic projectional pathway from the vagus nerve to the medullary visceral zone (MVZ) thence to the paraventricular nucleus of hypothalamus (PVN) was involved in the cytokine-to-brain communication. A triple labeling method in which WGA-HRP retrograde tracing was combined with anti-Fos and -TH immunohistochemical staining was used. WGA-HRP was stereotaxically injected into unilateral PVN in the rat, after a survival of 48 h, animals received intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The distribution of the HRP retrogradely labeled neurons, Fos protein positive and catecholaminergic neurons (tyrosine hydroxylase as marker) in the MVZ was observed. Subdiaphragmatic vagotomy (SDV) and sham surgery were also used to observe the different Fos expression in the MVZ after intraperitoneal administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or pyrogen-free saline (NS). Under light microscope, seven types of positively stained neurons could be distinguished within the MVZ, namely neurons single-labeled with Fos, HRP or TH, respectively; neurons double-labeled with Fos/TH, Fos/HRP or HRP/TH separately; and neurons triple-labeled with Fos, HRP and TH staining. Intraperitoneal LPS caused lots of robust Fos expression within the MVZ in the sham surgery groups and this response in the MVZ was markedly inhibited in the vagotomized rats. The results suggested that some catecholaminergic neurons in the MVZ could send projections to the PVN and this pathway might be involved in the relay of peripheral immune information via vagus nerve. MVZ was a neural relay station in the immune-to-brain communication and might play a significant role in the neuroimmunomodulation via vagus-MVZ-PVN pathway.

Abstract
Study of neurotransmitter role in food intake regulation in a leptin signaling deficient model, such as the Zucker rat, would benefit in the understanding of mechanisms of human obesity, in which leptin resistance is a common syndrome. We studied dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) concentrations in vivo in the ventromedial nucleus (VMN) of the hypothalamus, as they relate to eating after food deprivation in obese and lean 9-week-old male Zucker rats. DA and 5-HT concentrations were measured by HPLC via microdialysis before and during refeeding in 24-h food-deprived rats. Before food was provided, mean baseline DA and 5-HT levels were lower in obese than in lean rats (9.2 +/- 0.9 vs 15.1 +/- 1.9 pg/10 microl, p < 0.01, and 0.68 +/- 0.05 vs 1.17 +/- 0.02 pg/10 microl, p < 0.001, respectively). Food intake was accompanied by a decrease in DA levels in both obese and lean rats to 64% (p < 0.01) and 65% (p < 0.02) of their baseline levels respectively. 5-HT levels were significantly increased during eating by 41% in obese and 35% in lean rats (p < 0.01) from the baseline levels. Thus in obese rats with altered leptin signaling we found an unaltered pattern of DA and 5-HT release associated with food deprivation and refeeding, but with presence of their low levels. This points to an impaired postsynaptic monoaminergic action to produce an adequate metabolic response in obese Zucker rats in response to feeding state.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tumor growth in animals and humans is associated with the onset of anorexia and reduced food intake. We previously demonstrated that the ventromedial nucleus of hypothalamus (VMN) plays a contributory role in mediating cancer anorexia. Because serotonin and interleukin-1 (IL-1) are putative mediators of cancer anorexia, we hypothesized that their influence on food intake during tumor growth might occur via their action within the VMN. METHODS To test this hypothesis, 12 Fischer rats injected subcutaneously with 10(6) viable MCA sarcoma cells (TB rats) and their nontumor-bearing controls (NTB, n = 13) were studied. When anorexia developed, TB and NTB rats received bilateral intra-VMN microinjections of the serotonin antagonist mianserin (200 nmol) or the IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra, 25 ng). Food intake and its determinants of meal number and size were continuously recorded via a computerized device. RESULTS In NTB rats, intra-VMN mianserin did not affect food intake, whereas after IL-1ra or vehicle a momentary decrease in food intake due to a predominant reduction of meal size occurred. In TB rats, intra-VMN mianserin or IL-1ra selectively increased meal number, leading to improved food intake. CONCLUSIONS Data suggest that intra-VMN serotonin and IL-1 are involved in influencing cancer related anorexia.
