Atherogenic and anti-atherogenic factors in the human diet

New atherosclerosis causative factors and preventive modalities have been identified. Atherogenic factors include lipid oxidation products, such as cholesterol oxidation products, malonaldehyde and other aldehydes; trans-fatty acids; some saturated fatty acids (lauric, myristic and possibly palmitic acids); and myristic acid plus cholesterol. Lipid oxidation products are well suited to induce arterial damage, based on their known cytotoxic effects; evidence also indicates the possibility of plaque promotion and stimulation of thrombogenesis. Anti-atherogenic factors include antioxidants, fish oils and other polyunsaturates (if protected from oxidation), fibre and trace minerals such as copper, manganese, selenium and zinc. Iron is unique, being considered as both a potential promoter of atherosclerosis (component of ferritin, conceivably inducing lipid oxidation) and a possible anti-atherogenic component (of antioxidant enzyme catalase). It is apparent that an entire new series of research challenges has been uncovered.

[Antiviral activity of mangiferin against herpes simplex virus type 2 in vitro]

The effect of mangiferin, a tetrahydroxy pyrrolidone saponin extracted from the leaves of mango (Mangifera indica), against herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) in vitro was studied. The 50% effective concentration (EC50) of it against HSV-2 plaque formation in HeLa cells was 111.7 micrograms.ml-1, and the concentrations of 33 and 80 micrograms.ml-1 reduced the virus replicative yields by 90% (EC90) and 99% (EC99), respectively. The therapeutic index (IC50/EC50) was 8.1. Mangiferin did not directly inactivate HSV-2. The results of the drug addition and removal tests suggest that mangiferin inhibits the late event in HSV-2 replication.

Short-term experiments on ion transport by seedlings and excised roots : technique and validity

The absorption of K(+) by excised roots of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv California Mariout) has been systematically compared with that of entire, undisturbed seedlings. Some experiments have also been done with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and an amphiploid obtained from a cross between it and salt-tolerant tall wheatgrass (Lophopyrum elongatum Host Löve [syn. Agropyron elongatum Host]). For all three genotypes, the rate of K(+) absorption measured in a 20-min period was identical for entire 8-d-old seedlings and their excised roots within the experimental error. Manipulation gentler than root excision, viz. careful transfer of seedlings from one experimental solution to another, was also without effect on the rate of K(+) absorption. Absorption of K(+) measured by assay of its (86)Rb label in the tissue was identical with that measured by K(+) depletion of the experimental solutions assayed chemically. For the plant materials and conditions of these experiments, the excised root technique for studying ion transport into roots is validated. The advantages of the technique, and findings differing from the present ones, are discussed.

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization with anticancer drug in iodized oil for primary hepatic carcinoma

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization using a suspension of anticancer drug in iodized oil combined with Gelfoam embolization was performed in 85 patients with advanced primary hepatic carcinoma. Long-term retention of iodized oil in the tumor was observed in 90% of the cases, and changes in tumor size were observable by abdominal X-ray film on follow-up studies. There was a decrease of tumor size in all cases and the overall 1-year survival rate was 43%. In tumors whose diameter was less than 20 cm and in patients without portal vein thrombosis the survival rate was nearly 60%. Combined treatment with anticancer drug in iodized oil and Gelfoam embolization of the proper hepatic artery was superior to use of the suspension alone. There was also better detection of small cancer nodules by the suspension as compared to conventional angiography.

Validation of a coronary prognostic index for the Chinese--a tale of three cities

In order to confirm the efficacy of a new coronary prognostic index for the prediction of mortality of acute myocardial infarction in the Chinese in general, this index was applied to 886 patients from six general hospitals in Hong Kong (435 patients), Guangzhou (212 patients) and Shanghai (239 patients), respectively. They could be successfully stratified into seven clinical subsets with stepwise increasing mortality. The overall mortality tallied with that predicted by the original coronary prognostic index. The efficacy of this prognostic index for the prediction of mortality from acute myocardial infarction among the Chinese is verified and its application in the objective assessment of patients with acute myocardial infarction is recommended.

[Activation sequence of the left atrium studied by esophageal leads]

The intracardiac electrogram recorded in upper, middle and lower right atrium showed a positive, biphasic and negative P wave, respectively. This concept has been widely used in positioning the electrode in transesophageal atrial pacing (TEAP). However, in examination of the P wave figure in the unipolar lead along the esophagus by each two cm distance in 100 normal adults, we found that 32 subjects did not fulfill the above-mentioned criteria partially or completely. In order to study the underlying mechanism of such phenomenon, 190 patients undergone TEAP were examined by simultaneous recording of 2 unipolar esophageal leads (interelectrode distance 2-3 cm) with surface ECG. The patients were classified into 3 groups according to the morphology relation between the upper and lower esophageal P waves: Group A consisting of 155 cases (81.6%) in which the fashion of P wave changes was consistent with the usual criteria; Group B 17 cases (8.9%) was not consistent with the criteria; Group C 18 cases (9.5%) was in a reversed manner. The PEP-PED interval (measured from the peak of P wave in proximal esophageal lead to that in distal esophageal lead) was used as an indicator of left atrium activation sequence in vertical direction. Its value in these three groups was 6.3 +/- 10.1, -6.8 +/- 6.9 and -15.7 +/- 7.3 ms, respectively (P less than 0.001), suggesting in the latter two groups the left atrium activation was directed upward.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
