Abstract
BACKGROUND Keratoconus (KC) has been regarded as a rare condition, although recent studies, including those in South Africa, suggest it is common and is increasing in prevalence. Furthermore, South African-based studies have shown that KC is normally detected at advanced or severe stages. Knowledge and skills for examination, diagnosis and management of KC by optometrists are important for the early detection and management of the disease. AIM This study aimed to evaluate self-reported knowledge and skills for examination, diagnosis and management of KC patients among public sector optometrists. SETTING Seven public hospitals of the Capricorn district of the Limpopo province, South Africa. METHODS A quantitative cross-sectional descriptive study design was used. A self-administered online questionnaire was used to collect data on demographic characteristics of participants and their knowledge, skills and practice for the diagnosis and management of KC. RESULTS Twenty-four optometrists (n = 24) with a mean age of 39 ± 5.67 years, 18 (75%) of whom were female, participated in the study. Nineteen (79%) reported that their hospitals did not have the appropriate equipment to examine, diagnose and manage KC patients. Lack of equipment, poor knowledge, skills and competencies, hospital's level of services, policy and lack of interest were cited as barriers to contact lens fittings in KC patients. Using a dichotomised summation of self-reported knowledge and skills of KC, 13 (54.2%) of the optometrists were knowledgeable and skilled on risk factors of KC and examining, diagnosing and managing KC patients. CONCLUSION A significant proportion of optometrists did not have the appropriate knowledge and skills to examine, diagnose and manage KC patients. Lack of equipment and poor knowledge and skills were the main barriers to contact lens fittings in managing KC.Contribution: This article highlights the need for the district to upskill the optometrists through a structured programme with a theory and practical component and also provide the necessary equipment to enhance patient care.

Abstract
Objective To assess the effectiveness of an online educational video in improving contact lens (CL) care knowledge and behavior. Methods Participants completed a 47-item questionnaire on their CL hygiene knowledge and wear and care behavior. A 5-min CL educational video was shown, and participants completed a post-test. After 2 months, the same questionnaire was used to determine knowledge retention and behavioral changes. Descriptive statistics and McNemar's tests were performed. Results The mean age of the 132 enrolled participants was 24 years, and 61% were female. The knowledge scores significantly improved after watching the educational video (p < 0.001). Two months after the intervention, the participants reported changes in their hygienic behavior (p < 0.001). Conclusions Online video-based learning is an effective educational tool for improving the knowledge and behavior of CL care. Practice implications Patient education via online videos is an innovative and successful strategy that raises awareness, increases patient knowledge, and encourages preventative health behavior to avoid CL-related complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lack of attention to end-users' requirements and preferences may lead to the failure of health information technology (IT) interventions. Identifying users' needs for designing a mobile application can lead to the development of an acceptable intervention. This study aimed to determine the requirements for designing a mobile application to educate and provide needed information to contact lens (CL) wearers. METHODS A qualitative study was conducted on 24 CL wearers and nine eye care practitioners from the three CL clinics in Iran. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the conventional content analysis proposed by Lundman and Graneheim. Lincoln and Guba's criteria were used to ensure the trustworthiness of the data. RESULTS The three main categories that emerged from the interviews were mobile application content, mobile application functionalities, and mobile application features. Ten subcategories and 57 sub-subcategories were also identified. It was determined that mobile content should focus on advice and information for optimizing the CL wearing experience and training regarding the use of CLs. Entering information required for self-care, computational capability, interactivity, updates, and reminders were determined as needed functionalities. The participants recommended features for the structure and user interface of the mobile application and information presentation methods. CONCLUSION This study identified the information needed to develop a mobile application for CL wearers. This also provides insights regarding required functionalities when applying IT interventions. These findings can be used by CL clinics, developers of health information systems, policymakers, and health planners to design better CL-related care and compliance interventions.

Abstract
CLINICAL RELEVANCE A leading reason for patients to abandon their contact lenses is discomfort. Mechanisms and biomarkers for lens discomfort remain to be elucidated. BACKGROUND Physical stress and tear film interaction are likely factors for lens discomfort. Lipid mediators are generated from polyunsaturated fatty acids. They regulate ocular surface physiology and pathophysiology, are constituents of human tears and may interact with contact lenses. This study set out to determine if hydrogel lenses and silicone hydrogel lenses interact with tear film polyunsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids-derived mediators. METHODS In vitro incubations, rat experiments and analysis of worn human lenses assessed polyunsaturated fatty acids and lipid mediator interactions with lenses. Silicone hydrogel and hydrogel lenses were incubated with lipid mediators and polyunsaturated fatty acids up to 24 hours. Rats were fitted with custom silicone hydrogel lenses and basal tears collected. Silicone hydrogel lenses worn for 2 weeks were obtained from 57 human subjects. Tear and lens lipidomes were quantified by mass spectrometry. RESULTS Silicone hydrogel lenses retained polyunsaturated fatty acids and lipid mediators within 15 minutes in vitro. Lenses contained 90% of total polyunsaturated fatty acids and 83-89% of total monohydroxy fatty acids by 12 hours. Retention correlated with polarity of lipid mediators and lipophilic properties of silicone hydrogel lenses. Polyunsaturated fatty acids and lipid mediators such as lipoxygenase- and cyclooxygenase-derived eicosanoids were present in tears and worn lenses from rats. Worn silicone hydrogel lenses from human subjects established robust and lens-type specific lipidomes with high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, lipoxygenase-pathway markers and subject-specific differences in lipoxin A4 and leukotriene B4. CONCLUSION Worn silicone hydrogel lenses rapidly retain and accumulate tear polyunsaturated fatty acids and lipid mediators. Marked subject and lens type differences in the lipidome may document changes in ocular surface physiology, cell activation or infection that are associated with lens wear. If contact lens discomfort and adverse events induce specific tear and lens fatty acid and lipid mediator profiles warrants further studies.

Abstract
Purpose To describe two cases of Acanthamoeba keratitis diagnosed and treated at the epithelial stage of disease and to underscore the importance of early diagnosis on prognosis. Observations Case 1 is a 28-year-old male who developed Acanthamoeba keratitis after prolonged contact lens wear. Case 2 is a 43-year-old male with poor contact lens hygiene who was initially misdiagnosed and treated for herpetic keratitis. Both cases presented with epitheliopathy and were successfully treated with corneal epithelial debridement and topical anti-amoebic therapy, with complete avoidance of deeper extension of infection and associated complications. Conclusion and importance Epithelial stage Acanthamoeba keratitis represents a critical window of opportunity to achieve rapid cure. Acanthamoeba epitheliopathy may be mistaken for other conditions such as herpetic keratitis, contact lens overwear, or dry eye. Given worsening prognosis following delayed diagnosis, it is important for clinicians to be suspicious of Acanthamoeba keratitis in all contact lens wearers who develop elevated epitheliopathy.

Abstract
CLINICAL RELEVANCE Practitioners can be reassured that this antihistamine-releasing contact lens has no additional effect on corneal epithelial integrity. BACKGROUND To evaluate the effect of an antihistamine-releasing soft contact lens on corneal epithelium integrity when worn on a daily disposable modality for 12 weeks. METHODS Two clinical trials using the same randomised, double-masked, placebo-controlled, parallel-group design enrolled healthy contact lens wearers. Participants wore either etafilcon A with 0.019 mg ketotifen (test; n = 374) or etafilcon A with no added drug (placebo; n = 186). Assessments were conducted at baseline, 1 week and 4, 8, and 12 weeks. Slit-lamp evaluations of corneal staining (using sodium fluorescein) in all regions of the corneas of both eyes were graded on a 0-4 scale. Data from all randomised participants were analysed. RESULTS Corneal staining was infrequent and, where present, was mild (Grade 2) or trace (Grade 1). There were no Grade 3 or 4 findings of corneal staining. The overall proportion of findings of Grade 0 corneal staining was 95.86% with the test lens and 95.88% with the placebo lens. The odds of no staining were not statistically different between the test and placebo lenses (Odds Ratio: 0.96, 95% Confidence Intervals: 0.76 to 1.20). There were no serious ocular adverse events or signs of ocular surface medicamentosa. CONCLUSION Both test and placebo lenses were well tolerated by subjects during the 3 months of wear. The antihistamine-releasing contact lens does not significantly impact corneal epithelial integrity.

Abstract
Color vision deficiency (CVD) is a common ocular disorder affecting more than 300 million people on the earth. Although no clinical cure for the disorder currently exists, some specialized color filtering glasses/lenses based on dyes, metasurfaces, or nanocomposites have been employed for CVD management. However, as CVD patients usually diversify in their classification and severity, none of the current lenses provides a customized correction for various CVD patients, resulting in undesirable correction effects. Here, we present an inverse-designed approach for the precise correction of CVD. The wavelength shift of a patient's abnormal cone photoreceptors was measured to inversely design the best blocking wavelength and blocking rate of the lens. Then the customized aid lenses were fabricated using silica-coated gold nanoparticles with appropriate sizes and concentrations, verified by the simulated color vision and human tests. This study demonstrates the potential of the inverse-designed aid lenses in precise color filtering and customized CVD management.

Abstract
Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is an infection that is mostly observed in contact lens wearers. It is often misdiagnosed causing delays in the administration of the correct treatment. The aim of this study was to report the outcome of clinical and molecular diagnosis of AK cases during the summer of 2019 in the southern region of Brazil. Three suspected cases of AK were discovered after an ophthalmic examination at a public hospital in the city of Porto Alegre. These cases were then confirmed through laboratory diagnosis (cell culture and molecular analysis by PCR and sequencing). In each of the three clinical sample cell cultures of corneal scraping and molecular analysis confirmed the presence of Acanthamoeba spp., all belonging to the morphological group II and to the genotype T4, which is the most common genotype associated with AK. In addition, Acanthamoeba spp. isolated from one of the clinical samples was found to harbor the Candidatus Paracaedibacter acanthamoeba, a bacterial endosymbiont. The presence of Ca. Paracaedibacter acanthamoeba in clinical isolates requires further research to reveal its possible role in the pathogenicity of Acanthamoeba infections.

Abstract
CLINICAL RELEVANCE Contact lens prescribing data serve as a benchmark for eye care clinicians in assessing their own prescribing patterns and provide useful contextual information for researchers and the contact lens industry. PURPOSE To document global trends in contact lens prescribing during the first two decades of this century. METHODS A longitudinal survey of contact lens prescribing was conducted by asking contact lens practitioners to provide 11 items of information from 10 consecutive contact lens fits between January and March each year from 1996 to 2020, inclusive. RESULTS Data relating to 406,859 contact lens fits were collected from 71 countries between 1996 and 2020, generating 4.5 million data points. Demographic analysis for 61 nations returning ≥100 fits demonstrated that a majority of lenses (65-70%) were fitted to females. The average age of lens wearers was 30.8 ± 13.9 years for males and 32.5 ± 14.3 years for females. Trend analysis of 20 countries returning prescribing data for ≥13 years between 2000 and 2020 revealed the following: increase in the age of lens wearers; dramatic rise in the extent of fitting silicone hydrogel and daily disposable lenses; increased fitting of soft toric and multifocal lenses; increasing proportion of rigid lens fits in specialist (non-spherical) designs; incomplete provision of near contact lens corrections for contact lens wearing presbyopes; ongoing low levels of extended wear fits; and almost exclusive use of multi-purpose care systems. Daily disposable lenses were used for both full-time and part-time wear, whereas rigid and soft reusable lenses were primarily worn full time. CONCLUSIONS The evolution of international contact lens fitting over the first two decades of this century is documented. The data presented here may assist all stakeholders in advancing contact lens clinical practice, informing contact lens research, and guiding contact lens manufacturers.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic on contact lens education around the world. METHODS An online survey among contact lens educators (educator members of the International Association of Contact Lens Educators), conducted in May 2020. RESULTS A total of 214 responses were received from 32 countries (representing a 39% response rate). Overall, 71% of respondents' institutions were closed to students to attend at that time. A majority (58%) were delivering more online education than they would normally provide. Live online lectures and discussion was the most commonly used method (68%). Zoom was the most common videoconferencing technology (56%) and the most popular social media platform for communicating with students was WhatsApp (48%). About half (54%) were running online exams or assessments, 24% holding these for students to attend in person, and 27% were conducting practical sessions. Two in three (68%) said they would conduct more than 50% of their total teaching online by the end of 2020, and 12% anticipated 90% or more of their teaching would be online. Of all respondents, 74% expressed interest in an online platform delivering educational resources. CONCLUSION The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on the teaching of contact lenses, as educational institutions worldwide move to online delivery. Major challenges remain with online contact lens education, with respect to teaching practical skills, student assessment and interaction. More support will be needed for educators to meet these challenges as the recovery from the pandemic continues.

Abstract
Background: Not many studies have investigated the knowledge outcomes among medical students with regards to contact lenses (CL). Thus, in this study, we aim to assess the attitude and awareness of CL use and the associated factors among medical students of King Faisal University (KFU), Al Ahsa, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This a cross-sectional study that based developed based on a designed questionnaire that was composed of 31 questions with a maximum score of 57 points. We have also conducted a linear regression model to explore the possible important factors that may affect the level of knowledge and awareness about contact lenses care. Results: A total of 208 participants were included in this study, with a mean age of 21.0 ± 1.9, and 56.3% (n = 117) of them being females. The total mean knowledge score in our study was 30.1 ± 7.74, which was higher in females (31.5 ± 7.09) than in male participants (28.7 ± 7.69). The results of the linear regression model showed that being female (E = -0.37; 95%CI = -0.65— -0.10; P = 0.007), using contact lenses (E = 0.56; 95%CI = 0.29 — 0.82; P < 0.001), and in the third year (E = 0.66; 95%CI = 0.19— 1.13; P = 0.007) is significantly correlated with having higher knowledge scores about using CLs. Conclusion: Female participants had higher total mean knowledge scores than males. We recommend that further educational campaigns should be inaugurated to raise awareness about taking care of CLs and enhancing the related practices of wearing them.

Abstract
PURPOSE To provide a balanced literature review of the studies that have evaluated the effect of contact lenses on meibomian gland (MG) health. METHODS A PubMed.gov literature search was conducted on or before May 15, 2021. No other time constraints were applied. Search terms included the following: "meibomian gland(s)" plus "contact lens(es)" or "meibography" plus "contact lens(es)". Only full text articles written in English were considered. The reference lists of recovered papers were used to identify articles missed during the primary search. Included articles were required to discuss the impact of contact lenses on MG morphology or function and were graded according to the level of evidence presented. RESULTS The literature indicates that contact lenses impact MG function; however, the data are equivocal regarding contact lenses inducing MG structural changes. The literature likewise indicates that the mechanism(s) by which contact lenses impact the MGs are likely multifactorial. Recent data suggests that MGs may have some plasticity. Detected differences between studies likely stem from varied populations evaluated, study designs, and the duration of the evaluation periods. CONCLUSIONS With this literature review finding conflicting relationships between MG health and contact lens use, future longitudinal studies with standardized clinical MG assessments are needed to determine the true impact of contact lenses on MG health. Until these data are obtained, contact lens wearers should undergo a full MG evaluation, especially because recent data suggest that MG treatments may restore MG structure and function.

Abstract
PURPOSE The work is aimed at (i) comparing photopic contrast sensitivity (CS) of healthy subjects in an indoor environment with either blue-violet filtering (BVF) or clear contact lenses (CLs) and (ii) investigating a possible dependence of the CS variation on the subjects' intrinsic CS, measured with clear CLs. METHODS Optical transmittance of BVF and clear CLs was measured by a spectrophotometer. Photopic CS was measured monocularly on forty-one subjects (nineteen in the age range 20-36 years and twenty-two in the age range 44-66 years) by a digital optotype system at spatial frequencies from 1.5 to 18 cpd, wearing either clear or BVF CLs. The results are indicated as CSclear and CSBVF, respectively. RESULTS Transmittance curves in the visible range of the two CLs are very similar, despite an absorption band in the BVF CL spectrum with the minimum of transmittance at 428 ± 4 nm equal to about 79%. For both CSclear and CSBVF, no significant CS difference was found between younger and older adults. The difference [log(CSBVF) - log(CSclear)] showed a decreasing trend and changed sign from positive to negative as a function of log(CSclear) with correlation Spearman's Rho coefficients ranging from 0.80 to 0.88 (p < 0.01 at all spatial frequencies). CONCLUSION In the choice of a BVF CL, practitioners should take into consideration that it can influence photopic CS, improving it for subjects who have a relatively low CS with clear CLs, and worsening it for subjects who have a relatively high CS with clear CLs. BVF can affect positively the CS by reducing intraocular scattering. However, it can also cause a reduction in light intensity, which contributes to the formation of the retinal image. The positive or negative influence of BVF CLs compared to clear ones on CS is attributed to a balance among these effects.

Abstract
Three-dimensional printing enables precise modeling of anatomical structures and has been employed in a broad range of applications across medicine. Its earliest use in eye care included orbital models for training and surgical planning, which have subsequently enabled the design of custom-fit prostheses in oculoplastic surgery. It has evolved to include the production of surgical instruments, diagnostic tools, spectacles, and devices for delivery of drug and radiation therapy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, increased demand for personal protective equipment and supply chain shortages inspired many institutions to 3D-print their own eye protection. Cataract surgery, the most common procedure performed worldwide, may someday make use of custom-printed intraocular lenses. Perhaps its most alluring potential resides in the possibility of printing tissues at a cellular level to address unmet needs in the world of corneal and retinal diseases. Early models toward this end have shown promise for engineering tissues which, while not quite ready for transplantation, can serve as a useful model for in vitro disease and therapeutic research. As more institutions incorporate in-house or outsourced 3D printing for research models and clinical care, ethical and regulatory concerns will become a greater consideration. This report highlights the uses of 3D printing in eye care by subspecialty and clinical modality, with an aim to provide a useful entry point for anyone seeking to engage with the technology in their area of interest.

Abstract
The introduction of various drugs onto commercial soft contact lenses (CLs) has emerged as a potentially effective strategy for treating microbial keratitis (MK) because drug-loaded CLs can maintain a controlled drug concentration which leaded to enhanced drug bioavailability and reduced side effects in ocular tissues. In this study, silver nanoparticles modified with zwitterionic poly (carboxybetaine-co-dopamine methacrylamide) copolymer (PCBDA@AgNPs) as novel anti-infective therapeutics were prepared and firmly immobilized onto soft CLs through mussel-inspired surface chemistry. The obtained PCBDA@AgNPs coated CL (PCBDA@AgNPs-CL) remained the excellent transparency of commercial CLs and exhibited strong and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activities. We systematically explored the mechanism and found that the functional CLs can effectively inhibit the growth of microbial biofilms via a synergic "resist-kill-remove" strategy due to the zwitterionic surface and sustained release of silver ions. Significantly, in vitro cell cytotoxicity and in vivo subcutaneous implantation experiments proved the significant biosafety of PCBDA@AgNPs-CL. Furthermore, PCBDA@AgNPs-CL was successfully employed for the in vivo treatment of MK rabbit models, demonstrating excellent abilities to eradicate microbe-induced ocular infections and to prevent the destruction and irreversible structural alterations of corneal tissues. Collectively, PCBDA@AgNPs-CL is therefore a highly promising therapeutic device to significantly boost the efficacy for MK treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this review was to evaluate the evidence on quality-of-life outcomes of long-term contact lens wear. METHODS A search for original articles that used validated measures to evaluate patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in long-term (≥2 years) contact lens wearers was conducted in Medline Ovid, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, CINAHL, and PsycInfo databases. The information including PRO measure (name, type, content) and key quality-of-life outcomes findings were extracted. RESULTS Seven articles that used 4 PRO measures to evaluate quality of life outcomes of long-term contact lens wear met the inclusion criteria. The median (range) number of contact lens wearers in these studies was 116 (31-247). The studies were conducted in 4 countries: USA, Spain, China, and Russia. All studies were conducted in myopic populations. None of the studies provided information on psychometric properties, validity and reliability of the PRO measures used. Five studies were conducted in children of which 3 studies evaluated PROs of myopia control contact lens wear. The studies reported that contact lens wear, including myopia control lens wear, was an effective method of refractive correction in children and adults in the long term in PRO-perspective, and resulted in a better quality of life status than with glasses. However, long-term dry eye and discomfort related symptoms were reported. CONCLUSION Overall, contact lens use improved quality of life status in children and adults. More research is required to better understand the long-term quality-of-life outcomes of contact lens wear.

Abstract
Keratoconus (KC) is a progressive cone-shaped corneal protrusion that causes paracentral thinning at the apex of the cone and typically occurs asymmetrically on both sides. After a careful anamnesis and classification of the degree of severity a targeted treatment appropriate to the stage of the disease is available. If the visual acuity is no longer sufficient, rigid gas-permeable contact lenses (CL) are fitted by a specialist. Riboflavin UVA cross-linking (CXL) is recommended in cases of progression and visual acuity that is still useful for the patient. Intracorneal ring segments (ICRS) are indicated for CL intolerance in cases of reduced visual acuity and a clear central cornea. If the stage is more advanced, deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) or penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) is recommended. A PKP is contraindicated in acute KC but deep stromal sutures for readaptation of the Descemet tear with gas filling of the anterior chamber can considerably shorten the course. Almost no other eye disease is nowadays as easily accessible for an early instrument-based diagnosis and stage-appropriate treatment as KC.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyze the epidemiological and clinical features of Acanathamoeba keratitis AK and to assess the risk factors of this corneal infection in contact lens CL wearers in a tertiary center of Tunisia, North Africa. METHODS We carried out a retrospective study between January 2008 and December 2019 in the ophthtalmology department of a referral center, Sousse, Tunisia. A review of the chart of 248 patients using CL and diagnosed with presumed infectious keratitis was done.Socio demographic, risk behaviors and microbiological findings in case of AK were analyzed. The mean follow-up was 18 months (1 month-4 years). RESULTS AK was diagnosed in 29 cases (11.7% of contact lens wearers with infectious keratitis). These 29 cases were analyzed. The mean age at the time of diagnosis was 33, 44 ± 26, 9 years. Almost of the patients (13; 44.82%) used soft monthly disposable contact lenses. Some risk behaviors related to contact lens wearing were found in our study like not washing and drying hands before CL wear, sleeping in CL, topping off, not respecting the adequate replacement frequency and showering or swimming in CL.After treatment, visual acuity improved only in 10 cases (34.48%), remained the same in 11 cases (37.93%) and worsened in 8 cases (27.58%). CONCLUSION Clinicians must suspect AK in each CL wearer with suggestive clinical signs to allow earlier treatment and better prognosis. Public prevention messages that encourage CL wearers to respect the hygiene rules should be broadly applicable to each person using any type of CL, to minimize the risk of AK.

Abstract
The detection and recovery of body fluid evidence to reconstruct the involvement of people in a crime is an essential step in forensic investigation. The presence of tears is extremely rare but widely misunderstood because of its nature of secretion and low volumes found. They may be secreted in cases of sexual crimes, kidnaping, and violence among many other emotionally disturbing scenarios. It is suggestive that tears are an excellent source of epithelial cells for DNA to establish identity. They are deposited on tissue paper or handkerchief and lesser common substrates include bedding, face mask, and balaclava. Trace or touch DNA can also be retrieved from used contact lenses. Since tears can be secreted due to an emotional response, they can attract forensic analysis for identification. DNA profiling from these substrates is promising in the absence of other commonly found body fluids such as blood or saliva. The current study was done to explore the use of fresh and aged tear samples for forensic DNA analysis from three different substrates i.e., tissue paper, cotton fabric, and contact lenses. STR profiles were successfully obtained from all sample types (n = 60) with 100% allele recovery. The analysis provided consistent evidence that DNA extracted using this methodology was helpful to get reliable DNA profiles for forensics comparable with that from blood or saliva for personal identification.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Designing educational interventions tailored to the needs of Contact Lens Wearers (CLWs) are important and necessary. The present study aimed to determine the information needs of CLWs to educate and provide information to them to increase their knowledge and reduce complications and non-compliance behaviors. METHODS A qualitative approach was applied and semi-structured interviews were conducted in three contact lenses (CL) clinics in Iran among all their practitioners and 24 purposively selected patients. Data were analyzed using the Lundman and Graneheim conventional content analysis. RESULTS The qualitative analysis revealed knowledge and skill themes as two main categories. The knowledge category includes five subcategories of basic information for the CLWs, acquaintance with the CL, caring for CL, hygiene and vigilance of CL, and challenges of using CL. The skill category consists of two subcategories, including handling/insertion and removal of the CL, and stabilization of learned information. Moreover, 36 sub-subcategories emerged from these seven subcategories that reflected the information needs of CLWs. CONCLUSIONS A clear understanding of CLWs' information needs can help to design and develop appropriate educational approaches to overcome training barriers such as physicians' time constraints and high workload. Moreover, it can help deal with CLWs' insufficient knowledge and provide the required information simply and practically with the possibility of enough repetition.

Abstract
Ophthalmic drug delivery via eye drops is inefficient because only about 1-5% of the drug permeates the cornea during the short residence time of a few minutes. Contact lenses are receiving considerable attention for delivering ophthalmic drugs because of higher bioavailability and the possibility of sustained release from hour to days, and possibly longer. The drug release durations from contact lenses are typically measured in vitro and it is challenging to relate the in vitro release to in vivo release, particularly for hydrophobic drugs which may not exhibit sink release in vitro and in vivo. The in vitro release can be fitted to diffusion equation to determine the partition coefficient and diffusivity, which can then be utilized to model in vivo release. The Higuchi equation is frequently used to model the short time release from a contact lens to determine diffusivity with the implicit assumption that the release is under sink conditions and the starting concentration in the lens was uniform. Both conditions may be violated when measuring release of hydrophobic drugs from contact lenses because the diffusivity and partition coefficient, and also the time needed for equilibrium are not known a priori. Here we develop a method to use the data for both loading and release of cyclosporine, which is a common hydrophobic ophthalmic drug, to determine the partition coefficient and diffusivity. The proposed approach does not require sink conditions and also does not require the lens to be fully equilibrated during loading, which may take almost a month for lenses considered here. The model is based on solving the diffusion equation in the gel along with a mass balance in the fluid. The model equations are solved numerically by finite difference. When the value of partition coefficient is high, such as it is for cyclosporine, the dynamic data is only sensitive to a ratio of partition coefficient and diffusivity, and this ratio had to first be determined from the loading data. Then the two unknown parameters were obtained by minimizing the error between the model prediction and experimental data. The method was used to determine D and K for several silicone hydrogel formulations with varying ratio of hydrogel and silicone fractions.

Abstract
Due to the very low bioavailability of drugs administered to the surface of the eyeball, issues related to the formulation of an ophthalmic drug pose a technological challenge. The essence of an ophthalmic drug is the selection of an appropriate active substance (API), but also auxiliary substances that determine the desired drug quality and API availability. The ophthalmic drug is not only classic eye drops. Therefore, on the basis of the literature data, the properties and application of auxiliary substances increasing the pharmaceutical availability of API, improving the penetration of API into the eye structures and modifying the viscosity of eye drops were characterized. The possibility of chemical modification of API and the use of prodrugs in ophthalmic drug forms was also noted. Taking into account the progress in the field of ophthalmic drug formulation, the use of multi-compartment systems (lipid particles, nanoparticles, microparticles, liposomes, niosomes, dendrimers) and modern ophthalmic drug delivery systems (inserts, implants, microneedles, contact lenses, ionophoretic systems) have been indicated. Examples of solutions already used by manufacturers, as well as those in the phase of laboratory or clinical trials, were indicated.

Abstract
Silicone hydrogel lenses were prepared by copolymerizing PDMS-PEGMA macromer (PGP) with various combinations of DMA, NVP, and PEGMA through UV initiated polymerization process. The resultant PGP macromer were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDS). Characterization of all the resultant co-polymers included Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), equilibrium water content (EWC), oxygen permeability (Dk), optical transparency, contact angle, mechanical properties, zeta potential, protein deposition, and cytotoxicity. The results show that higher content of hydrophilic polymers increased water uptake ability as well as improved hydrophilicity and modulus of silicone hydrogel lenses; however, oxygen permeability decreased with the decrease of PDMS content (145 barrers of PGP to 37 barrers of DP0). In addition, these silicone hydrogel lenses exhibited relatively optical transparency, anti-protein deposition, and non-cytotoxic according to an in vitro L929 fibroblast assay. Therefore, these silicone hydrogel polymers would be applicable for making contact lens.

Abstract
An increasing number of people worldwide are affected by eye diseases, eventually leading to visual impairment or complete blindness. Conventional treatment involves the use of eye drops. However, these formulations often confer low ocular bioavailability and frequent dosing is required. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop more effective drug delivery systems to tackle the current limitations. Hydrogels are multifunctional ophthalmic drug delivery systems capable of extending drug residence time and sustaining release of drugs. In this review, common ocular diseases and corresponding therapeutic drugs are briefly introduced. In addition, various types of hydrogels reported for ophthalmic drug delivery, including in-situ gelling hydrogels, contact lenses, low molecular weight supramolecular hydrogels, cyclodextrin/poly (ethylene glycol)-based supramolecular hydrogels and hydrogel-forming microneedles, are summarized. Besides, marketed hydrogel-based opthalmic formulations and clinical trials are also highlighted. Finally, critical considerations regarding clinical translation of biologics-loaded hydrogels are discussed.

Abstract
With the development of smart devices, higher requirements are put forward for the stimuli-responsive materials. Stimuli-hydrogels as one kind of stimuli-responsive materials with hydrophilicity, demonstrate huge potential in developing intelligent devices for biomedical application. On this basis, we herein report that a sample method was devised to develop a novel composite hydrogel mainly based on oxidized hydroxyethyl cellulose and allyl co-polymer. Subsequently, a series of tests toward this oxidized hydroxyethyl cellulose-based hydrogel due to its structure and performance was applied. Here, the oxidized hydroxyethyl cellulose molecular chains were used as biomacromolecule templates to form Schiff base, borate and hydrogen bonds to obtain unique mechanical properties (fast recovery with almost no-hysteresis and remarkable compressive capacity), while a double bond functionalized spirooxazine (allyl spirooxazine derivative) was applied to endow photo- and pH sensitivity to the oxidized hydroxyethyl cellulose-based transparent hydrogel (T% = 93%) substrate. Furthermore, the oxidized hydroxyethyl cellulose-based hydrogel did exhibit good pH environment adaptability and noncytotoxicity in vitro test. Based on the advanced characteristics, the designed oxidized hydroxyethyl cellulose-based hydrogel has potential applications prospect in the development of safe, fashionable and pH- detectable contact lenses, thereby providing a new strategy for the development of smart, stylish contact lenses.
