Abstract
BACKGROUND Shared responsibility is an essential part of family-centred care and it characterizes the relationship between parents and healthcare professionals. Despite this, little is known about their shared responsibility for decision-making in neonatal intensive care units. AIM The aim of this scoping review was to identify previous studies on the subject and to summarize the knowledge that has been published so far. METHOD The review was conducted using electronic searches in the CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus and PsycINFO databases and manual searches of the reference lists of the selected papers. The searches were limited to peer-reviewed papers that had been published in English from 2010 to September 2021. The data were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria and the findings were inductively summarized. We identified eight papers that met the inclusion criteria. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS The scoping review was conducted according to good scientific practice by respecting authorship and reporting the study processes accurately, honestly and transparently. RESULTS The results showed that shared responsibility for decision-making was based on the parents' intentions, but the degree to which they were willing to take responsibility varied. The facilitating and inhibiting factors for shared responsibility for decision-making were related to the communication between parents and professionals. The impact was related to the parents' emotions. CONCLUSION It is essential that parents and professionals negotiate how both parties will contribute to their shared responsibility for decision-making. This will enable them to reach a mutual understanding of what is in the infants' best interests and to mitigate the emotional burden of decisions in neonatal intensive care units. More research is needed to clarify the concept of shared responsibility for decision-making in this intensive care context.

Abstract
AIM To explore nurses' and family members' perspectives of family care at the end of life, during restricted visitation associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. BACKGROUND To minimise the transmission of COVID-19, stringent infection prevention and control measures resulted in restricted hospital access for non-essential workers and visitors, creating challenges for the provision of family-centred care at the end of life. DESIGN Qualitative descriptive approach based on naturalistic inquiry. METHODS At a large public hospital in Melbourne, Australia, individual semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 15 registered nurses who cared for patients who died during restricted visitation associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, and 21 bereaved family members. COREQ guidelines informed analysis and reporting. RESULTS Five themes developed from the data: (i) impact of visitor restrictions, which describes uncertain, ambiguous and arbitrary rules, onerous and inconsistent requirements; (ii) nurse-family communication; (iii) family-centred care and interrupted connections; (iv) well-being and negative emotions; and (v) suggestions for a better way, such as moving away from the black and whiteness of the rules, prioritising communication, compassion and advocacy. CONCLUSIONS Negative consequences for communication and the patient-family connection at the end of life were felt deeply. The evolving COVID-19 rules that were frequently revised and applied at short notice, and the subsequent consequences for clinical practices and care were felt deeply. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Technology-facilitated communication, innovation and increased resources must be prioritised to overcome the challenges described in this study. A family-centred approach to care and emphasising the patient-family connection at the end of life is fundamental to minimising trauma and distress associated with future public health emergencies. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION Bereaved family members contributed their first-hand experience. Members of the health service's patient experience team ensured the research was conducted in accordance with health service guidelines for patient and public contribution.

Abstract
AIM To assess the feasibility and applicability of a standardized programme to facilitate family participation in essential care activities in the intensive care unit. DESIGN Pilot study with a cross-sectional survey design. METHODS A standardized programme to facilitate family participation in essential nursing care activities was implemented in intensive care units of three hospitals in the Netherlands from November 2018 until March 2019. The feasibility and applicability of the programme were assessed with surveys of the patients, relatives and healthcare providers. RESULTS Three intensive care units successfully implemented the standardized programme. Three patients, ten relatives and 37 healthcare providers responded to the surveys. Patients appreciated family participation and recognized that their relatives liked to participate. Relatives appreciated being able to do something for the patient (80%) and to participate in essential care activities (60%). The majority of relatives (60%) felt they had sufficient knowledge and skills to participate and did not feel obliged nor uncomfortable. Healthcare providers felt they were trained adequately and motivated to apply family participation; application was perceived as easy, clear and relatively effortless according to the majority. According to 68% of the healthcare providers, most relatives were perceived to be capable of learning to participate in essential care activities. Some healthcare providers felt uncertain about the patient's wishes regarding family participation, with some indicating the behaviours of relatives and patients discouraged them from offering family participation. Use of a standardized programme to facilitate family participation in essential care activities in the intensive care unit seems feasible and applicable as determined by relatives and healthcare providers.

Abstract
Background Children and adolescents who sustain an acquired brain injury (ABI) can experience acute and ongoing difficulties in a range of cognitive and functional domains, and their families often experience significant life changes and challenges. Family-centred service is therefore considered best practice in paediatric ABI rehabilitation. Despite widespread acceptance of family-centred service in this context, recent literature indicates that family needs are often unrecognised and unmet following paediatric ABI. Although family-centred service was introduced in the field of developmental disability over five decades ago, there remains a lack of clarity about how this approach is implemented in practice. Additionally, limited literature has discussed the implementation of family-centred service in paediatric ABI rehabilitation despite key differences between ABI and developmental disability, including nature and timing of onset, rehabilitation foci, and impacts on families. Aims In this review, we aim to: (i) outline common sequelae of paediatric ABI with a focus on family outcomes; (ii) summarise paediatric rehabilitation and highlight opportunities for family support and involvement; (iii) discuss and synthesise literature across paediatric ABI rehabilitation and family-centred service to highlight gaps in knowledge and practice; and (v) identify clinical implications and future research directions. Conclusions There is a clear need for greater clarity and consensus regarding the implementation of family-centred service in paediatric ABI rehabilitation. This review highlights the importance of providing professional development opportunities for clinicians to increase competency in practising in a family-centred manner, and opportunities to actively involve, empower and support families within rehabilitation. This review also emphasises the importance of services implementing relevant supports to address family needs where possible and developing clear referral pathways so that families can access further support elsewhere when needed.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The aims of the present study were investigating the feasibility of: (1) using the Danish version of Sophia Observation withdrawal Symptoms-Paediatric Delirium (SOS-PD) screening tool in clinical practice and (2) comparing SOS-PD performance to a child psychiatrist's assessment using the diagnostic criteria as a reference standard. BACKGROUND Critically ill children risk developing delirium potentially causing discomfort and suffering. Intensive care delirium has a fluctuating course complicating detection. Systematic screening during and after intensive care is central to manage paediatric delirium. DESIGN AND METHODS We used a descriptive and comparative design. First aim: Bedside nurses were asked to evaluate their experience of using the SOS-PD. Second aim: We compared the SOS-PD performance with the child psychiatrist assessment in 50 children aged 4 weeks to 18 years. RESULTS Nurses found the Danish version of the SOS-PD applicable and easy to use. Of the 50 children included, 13 were diagnosed with delirium by the child psychiatrist. Consistency was found between the SOS-PD score and the child psychiatrist's assessment (88%). We found three false-negative and three false-positive SOS-PD cases. The false-negative cases could be explained by the differences in time periods for the assessments. SOS-PD assessments covered the past 4 h, whereas the psychiatric assessments covered the past 24 h. We assume the false-positive cases represent an acceptable inconsistency between the two assessment methods. CONCLUSIONS The Danish version of the SOS-PD appeared suitable for identifying paediatric delirium. Our results emphasised the importance of assessment at least once during each nursing shift to ensure delirium detection around the clock due to the fluctuating course of delirium. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Implementing the Danish SOS-PD may increase awareness of this critical disorder by improving systematic identification of paediatric delirium in clinical practice paving the way for improved delirium prevention and management.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Several studies explore and describe the role of family dynamics in dementia care. However, few focus specifically on the diversity of family relationships that influence family caregivers' experiences of providing care to a relative with dementia. The role of family caregivers engaging in unpaid care of relatives with dementia is becoming more and more critical as the numbers of people living with dementia increase across the globe. Family caregivers are a diverse group of people as there are different categories of kinship relations and thus cannot be viewed as a single collective. They are linked intricately to their family and social support systems, however, they often experience limited family support, and tensions between family members can be a major source of stress. Hence, health professionals need to deepen their understanding of family relationships to enable them to provide effective advocacy and clinical support to family caregivers. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: This study is unique in that it focuses on a range of family relationships in which a person with dementia finds themselves. It highlights that this network of complex connections influences the caregiving process. The study demonstrates the important role that siblings can play in sharing the caregiving load. However, this sharing is rarely balanced or fair and there is always someone in the family who carries the heaviest load. Communication between family members is frequently a challenge, with family members experiencing denial or an inability to understand the challenges encountered by the family caregiver. Most studies focus on the relationship between the family caregiver and the relative with dementia alone, rather than the family network of the family caregiver and how it influences the caregiving process. This study is unique as it focuses on family dynamics and the family network, particularly the range of family relationships in which family caregivers and their relative with dementia find themselves. Other studies tend to focus on a specific kinship category and the family network, such as an adult child, caring for their parent, but this study presents a wide variety of kinship categories to demonstrate the diversity of family caregiving contexts. The family caregivers in this study all highlighted the need or desire for effective support from the family network. Challenges of communication between family members and the caregiver were also evident and were framed within the existing family dynamic of each family. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR MENTAL HEALTH NURSING?: The findings suggest the need for communication (training and therapeutic) interventions between family caregivers and other family members (secondary caregivers). Mental health nurses are often well positioned to offer the family caregiver the option to undertake such an intervention. The findings emphasize the diversity of family caregiving situations and argue that mental health nurses can assess the nature of the care situations and work with families on how best to address the needs of the relative with dementia and the main caregiver. However, tensions frequently exist between family members, some of which existed prior to the relative acquiring dementia and other tensions as a consequence of the relative acquiring dementia. Mental health nurses could assist as a mediator between family members in order to assist families to become more cohesive. ABSTRACT: Introduction This article explores the diverse nature of family caregivers, focusing on the different categories of kinship relations. Family caregivers are linked intricately to their families, but often experience limited family support, causing stress and tension between family members. Aim The article aims to explore the family relationships of family members caring for relatives with dementia in order to provide an insight into the role of such relationships on the caregiver relative with dementia dyad. Method A phenomenological, exploratory-descriptive design was used. Eight participants took part and data were obtained using collages and semi-structured interviews. Results A range of family relationship patterns was highlighted including sibling involvement in the caregiving process; spousal involvement in supporting a caregiver of a parent; and spousal involvement in caring for their spouse. Discussion The family caregivers highlighted the need or desire for effective support from the family network. Challenges of communication between family members and the caregiver were also evident and were framed within the existing family dynamic of each family. Implications for Practice Mental health nurses need to deepen their understanding of family relationships to enable them to provide effective advocacy and clinical support to family caregivers and assist families to become more cohesive.

Abstract
Current literature is lacking in describing families' experiences in being involved in children's pain management. This study sought to understand children and their parents' experiences with pain management at a tertiary care children's hospital. Twelve child-parent dyads were recruited to participate in the study from January to August 2022. Children and their parents chose whether to be interviewed together or separately. Transcripts were analyzed using inductive, data-driven codes. Codes and themes were developed using a codebook and member-checking. Three main themes were identified: a. Painful experiences can have a significant positive or negative effect on families' lives and healthcare trajectories; b. There can be a mismatch between families' expectations of pain management and how they perceive the pain was managed; c. Families feel that they must advocate for better pain care, but often feel too intimidated to do so, or worry that their concerns will be dismissed by healthcare professionals. Families want healthcare professionals to proactively manage their children's pain, supporting the shaping of early positive memories of the child's healthcare interactions. Healthcare providers must further recognize that poorly treated pain can significantly impact families' lives and should both seek and be receptive to child and parent input for better pain care.

Abstract
This study aimed to explore the experiences of adult clients with hearing loss and their audiologists in using an online tool, the Living Well Tool (LWT), during initial audiology appointments. The LWT is designed to help clients identify when and where it is most important for them to communicate effectively and live well with hearing loss. A total of 24 adult clients with hearing loss and two audiologists participated in this study. Clients were invited to complete the LWT prior to their next audiology appointment, however, most clients chose to use the LWT in-session with their audiologist. Following the appointment, clients and audiologists participated in individual qualitative semi-structured interviews to explore their experiences of using the LWT, and the extent to which the LWT facilitated person-centred care. Qualitative analysis five key themes which reflected participants' experiences and perceptions of using the LWT: (1) the LWT enhances audiological care; (2) the LWT supports person-centred audiological care; (3) the use of the LWT should be individualised; (4) users value comprehensiveness; and (5) users value accessibility. This study demonstrated that the LWT supported the provision of person-centred audiological care, providing a flexible, comprehensive and accessible means for audiologists to gain an understanding of their clients' needs and preferences. However, it was also noted that the use of a tool must be individualised and accessible for all.

Abstract
Background Delirium is a common complication in patients treated in the intensive care unit (ICU). Family members can help alleviate patient anxiety and may be able to aid in the management of delirium. This study aimed to explore the perceptions of former ICU patients and their families together, regarding the involvement of family in delirium management. Method Nine audio-recorded, semi-structured interviews took place with former ICU patients together with a family member. Participants were interviewed after their intensive care follow-up clinic appointment in an East Midlands hospital in England. Interviews were transcribed, coded and analysed using thematic analysis. Results Three themes were identified: 'understanding about delirium'; 'influencers of delirium management: family and healthcare professionals' and 'family-based delirium care'. Participants expressed that family have a valuable role to play in the management of delirium in the ICU. However, education and guidance is needed to support the family in how delirium can be managed and the current treatment options available. It is important for ICU staff to gain an understanding of the patient's life and personality to personalise delirium management to the needs of the patient and their family. Conclusion This study found that family presence and knowledge about the patient may be beneficial to delirium management in the ICU. Further research should investigate the effectiveness of the strategies and interventions to understand their influence on delirium management in ICU patients.

Abstract
Background Hospitalisation is a stressful event for the admitted child and the family. The unfamiliar and stressful hospital environment could increase children's anxiety and pain experiences. Family-centred care has the potential to promote families' holistic health, but its implementation is limited. Aim To describe the barriers to family-centred care at a specific hospital in Gauteng. Setting The study was contextual and was conducted at a specific hospital situated in Gauteng. Methods A descriptive qualitative research design was used to collect data from 11 nurses and 14 primary caregivers of hospitalised children. Purposive sampling was used. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analysed using qualitative content analysis. Rigour through measures to enhance trustworthiness was ensured and ethical principles related to research with human participants were adhered to. Results Three themes indicating the barriers to family-centred care emerged from the data, namely nurse-primary caregiver relationship, primary caregiver involvement, and ward structure and policy. Conclusion Barriers to family-centred care involved interpersonal, environmental, and managerial dimensions of the hospital environment where children received care and treatment. A need to enhance family-centred care was therefore identified in order to address relational dimensions of the nurse-primary caregiver relationship, ward structure, and revision of current policies. Contribution The article highlights barriers to family-centred care to enable action to be taken in the clinical environment to enhance a family-centred approach and improve the hospitalisation experience for children and caregivers.

Abstract
AIM To determine the outcomes of Family-centred Auditory and Tactile Stimulation Implementation on Traumatic Brain Injured Patients in Egypt. BACKGROUND Family engagement in the care of their relatives in the Intensive care units is limited due to patients' life-threatening conditions, in addition to the use of high technology in these settings. Auditory and tactile sensory stimulations are among the diverse sensory stimulations that have received more attention in brain injured patients than other senses as being considered safe, and effective measures. DESIGN A Quasi-experimental design was used to test the hypotheses of this study. METHODS A convenience sample of 60 adult patients suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury and admitted to the intensive care units of two University Hospitals in Egypt was included in the study. Patients were assigned into two equal groups: control and study groups (30 patients each). The auditory and tactile stimulations were provided by trained family members, once daily for 2 weeks for the study group. Whereas routine communication was provided by the family of traumatic brain injured patients in the ICU for the control group. Two tools were used for data collection; tool one, the "Glasgow Coma Scale" to assess patient's level of consciousness, and tool two the "Physiological Adverse Events Assessment" to monitor patients for the occurrence of physiological adverse events. DATA COLLECTION January to October 2019. RESULTS The implementation of an organized auditory and tactile stimulation by trained family members is associated with highly statistically significant positive effects . Patients in the study group showed a higher mean of consciousness, lower incidence rate of physiological adverse events, and a lower mean duration of ICU stay. CONCLUSIONS Implementation of an organized auditory and tactile stimulation by trained family members enhanced the consciousness level of comatose Traumatic Brain Injured patients, decreased the occurrence of physiological adverse events, and ICU length of stay. Thus, it is recommended for use in the daily routine nursing care of comatose Traumatic Brain Injured patients. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This study gives a deeper understanding of how family engagement in the care of their critically ill relative enhances their recovery and improve their level of consciousness.

Abstract
AIM We examined if a range of factors were associated with how ready mothers were for their infants to be discharged from a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). METHODS This was a secondary analysis of a study on the well-being of mothers whose infants were hospitalised in the level 3 NICU at the Jewish General Hospital in Canada. We studied 132 mother-infant dyads: 70 from an open ward NICU and 62 from the purpose-built NICU with pods or single family rooms that replaced it in 2016. The mothers completed a questionnaire on NICU stress and their perceptions of family-centred care on enrolment and another on breastfeeding self-efficacy and readiness to go home a week before discharge. The infants' characteristics were retrieved from the medical files. RESULTS The infants were born at a mean age of 29.8 ±3.1 weeks. Greater family-centred care during early hospitalisation (p=0.01) and greater breastfeeding self-efficacy in the period before discharge (p=0.04) were significantly associated with higher readiness for discharge. The unit design was not a significantly associated with readiness for discharge. CONCLUSION The quality of early family-centred care and breastfeeding self-efficacy were significantly associated with how ready mothers were for their preterm infant to be discharged from the NICU.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To explore culturally and linguistically diverse men's experiences of support after perinatal death, including barriers and facilitators to support and how healthcare providers, systems and policies can best support families. BACKGROUND Many groups of culturally and linguistically diverse families in Australia are at higher risk of experiencing perinatal death. Culturally sensitive bereavement services are essential; however, there has been no previous research specifically examining culturally and linguistically diverse men's experiences of support following perinatal death. DESIGN Individual semi-structured interviews were completed with healthcare providers, community leaders and culturally and linguistically diverse men who had experienced a perinatal death in Australia (n = 16). Data were analysed using Thematic Analysis and COREQ guidelines were followed. RESULTS Men's need for support following perinatal death was associated with stigma, and shaped by culturally-relevant religion and ritual, and connection to community and family. Significant barriers to men seeking and gaining support included challenges with self-advocacy and navigating the woman-centred nature of perinatal care in Australia. CONCLUSIONS Culturally and linguistically diverse men's specific needs should be included in the development of policy and practice surrounding perinatal death. While perinatal bereavement care guidelines acknowledge the importance of culturally informed care following perinatal death, there remains a lack of culturally specific supports available, particularly for culturally and linguistically diverse men. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Specific recommendations from this research include increasing community liaison officers or cultural consultants in hospitals and support organisations; providing culturally and linguistically diverse support groups; adopting family-centred and father-inclusive language in all perinatal death support services and ensuring clear communication and targeted assistance for culturally and linguistically diverse men to self-advocate for their baby and access to support. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION This study came out of consultation with community members and member checking of results was conducted to ensure adequate representation of participants' views.

Abstract
Aim To investigate the impact of family visit restrictions during the COVID‐19 pandemic on deliriums, falls, pneumonia, pressure ulcers and readmissions among surgical inpatients with gastrointestinal (oncologic) diseases. Design Cohort study. Methods This study was conducted among adult inpatients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery in two academic hospitals. During the COVID‐19 outbreak in 2020, over a 10‐week period, one cohort was subjected to family visit restrictions. Per patient, one person per day was allowed to visit for a maximum of 30 min. This cohort was compared with another cohort in which patients were not subjected to such restrictions during a 10‐week period in 2019. Logistic regression analyses were used to investigate the impact of the restrictions on deliriums, falls, pneumonia, pressure ulcers and readmissions. Results In total, 287 patients were included in the 2020 cohort and 243 in the 2019 cohort. No differences were observed in the cohorts with respect to baseline characteristics. Logistic regression analyses showed no significant differences in deliriums, falls, pneumonia, pressure ulcers and readmissions between the cohorts. Conclusion We cautiously conclude that the family visit restrictions during the COVID‐19 pandemic did not contribute to deliriums, falls, pneumonia, pressure ulcers or readmissions in surgical patients with gastrointestinal (oncologic) diseases. Impact COVID‐19 influenced family‐centred care due to family visit restrictions. Nurses need to continue monitoring outcomes known to be sensitive to family‐centred care to gain insight into the effects of visit restrictions and share the results in order to include nurses' perspectives in COVID‐19‐decision‐making. Re‐implementing of family visit restrictions should be carefully considered in policy‐making.

Abstract
Aim To test whether the implementation of the Close Collaboration with Parents intervention at a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) decreases depression symptoms of mothers up to two years after the delivery of preterm infants. Methods We used a non‐equivalent two‐group design, comparing mothers of very low birthweight infants in the same NICU before (2001–2006) and after (2011–215) the intervention. The unit carried out the educational intervention (2009–2012) that was targeted at its healthcare team and aimed to improve their skills to collaborate with parents. Maternal depression symptoms were measured using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) six months and two years after the expected birth date of the infant. Results We found a median difference of 2.56 (95% CI from 1.64 to 3.48) in EPDS at the two‐year follow‐up between the pre‐intervention and post‐intervention groups, p < 0.001. Furthermore, we found no interaction between measurement time‐points and group, implying that the intervention effect on maternal depression symptoms was similar at the six‐month and two‐year time‐points. Conclusion The intervention seems to have long‐term preventive effects on maternal depressive symptoms. This effect is of clinical significance as prolonged maternal depression associates with adverse child outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children's hospices provide a range of family-centred care services, including bereavement support. Not all hospices provide specific services for grandparents. AIM To explore how a hospice-based bereavement support group supported grandparents in their grief following the death of a grandchild. METHODS Grandparents attending a group were invited to complete an anonymous questionnaire. Questionnaires from eight groups, run between 2015 and 2019 were collated and interpreted to identify themes. FINDINGS A total of 121 grandparents attended the groups; 113 returned the questionnaires (93% response). A total of three superordinate themes were identified: environment and space, being with people who understand, and the opportunity to hear the stories of others. Grandparents valued hearing the stories of others, providing an opportunity to reflect on the experience of others. CONCLUSION Grandparents felt supported and validated by the group. Facilitated sessions increased coping and resilience of participants, enabling grandparents to support their partner, adult children and surviving grandchildren more effectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Engagement of the child, parent and professional may facilitate positive outcomes for young children with communication disorders receiving early intervention (EI) via telepractice. Despite reported positive outcomes of engagement in a family-centred model of EI, there is limited research exploring the nature engagement in the telepractice environment and guiding professionals on how to best interact with young children and their families. AIM To identify a set of critical behaviours for building engagement in telepractice EI. METHODS & PROCEDURES A two-round modified e-Delphi study was conducted. Participants were international experts in the field of paediatric communication disorders and telepractice EI from diverse allied health and education backgrounds. The experts used a nine-point Likert scale to rate the importance of a predetermined set of critical behaviours for building engagement in telepractice EI across three different aspects of the telepractice interaction: (1) getting to know each other; (2) family-centred telepractice; and (3) telepractice specific considerations. OUTCOMES & RESULTS A total of 30 experts completed round 1, with 21 participants from round 1 completing round 2 (70% response rate). Across the two rounds, a total of 64 of the 109 items presented (58.71%) achieved consensus as critical behaviours for building engagement in telepractice EI. CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS The present study identified a set of individual aspects of the telepractice interaction that participants, particularly professionals, may need to intentionally address to engage with families of young children with communication disorders receiving EI via telepractice. The results from this study will contribute to the development of an observational tool to measure engagement in the telepractice EI environment. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS What is already known on the subject A growing body of research suggests telepractice is a feasible alternative for families of young children with communication disorders who lack access to high-quality EI. The engagement of families through family-centred care has long been recommended for children enrolled in EI. Although there is growing uptake of telepractice EI, limited research is available guiding professionals on how to engage with families of young children with communication disorders via telepractice. What this paper adds to existing knowledge This study provides a set of 64 telepractice-specific behaviours deemed critical to engagement for all participants of the telepractice interaction. The display of these behaviours could assist professionals to better engage with families of young children within the telepractice environment. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? The findings of this study provide a set of telepractice-specific behaviours that professionals may need to deliberately display and encourage while interacting with young children with communication disorders and their families. Professionals displaying these behaviours could potentially enhance the engagement of families receiving EI services via telepractice. This set of critical behaviours will be refined with the aim of developing an evidence-based observational tool to measure engagement in the context of telepractice EI.

Abstract
Introduction The introduction of effective, evidence‐based approaches to centredness in health care is hindered by the fact that research results are not easily accessible. This is partly due to the large volume of publications available and because the field is closely linked to and in some ways encompasses adjoining fields of research, for example, shared decision making and narrative medicine. In an attempt to survey the field of centredness in health care, a systematic overview of reviews was conducted with the purpose of illuminating how centredness in health care is presented in current reviews. Methods Searches for relevant reviews were conducted in the databases PubMed, Scopus, Cinahl, PsychINFO, Web of Science and EMBASE using terms connected to centredness in health care. Filters specific to review studies of all types and for inclusion of only English language results as well as a time frame of January 2017–December 2018, were applied. Results The search strategy identified 3697 unique reviews, of which 31 were included in the study. The synthesis of the results from the 31 reviews identified three interrelated main themes: Attributes of centredness (what centredness is), Translation from theory into practice (how centredness is done) and Evaluation of effects (possible ways of measuring effects of centredness). Three main attributes of centeredness found were: being unique, being heard and shared responsibility. Aspects involved in translating theory into practice were sufficient prerequisites, strategies for action and tools used in safeguarding practice. Further, a variety and breadth of measures of effects were found in the included reviews. Conclusions Our synthesis demonstrates that current synthesized research literature on centredness in health care is broad, as it focuses both on explorations of the conceptual basis and the practice, as well as measures of effects. This study provides an understanding of the commonalities identified in the reviews on centredness in healthcare overall, ranging from theory to practice and from practice to evaluation. Patient or Public Contribution Patient representatives were involved during the initiation of the project and in decisions about its focus, although no patient or public representatives made direct contributions to the review process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Family-centred care (FCC) is an approach to promote family and health care provider partnership. This has been incorporated into neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) worldwide. However, FCC in low resource health settings, such as Thailand, is challenging and further impacted by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). AIMS To evaluate FCC innovations to improve respect, collaboration and support in a Thai NICU. STUDY DESIGN A quasi-experimental study was conducted in an NICU in southern Thailand. Pre-implementation was prior to COVID-19, and parental and staff perceptions of FCC were measured via Perceptions of Family Centred Care-Parent (PFCC-P) and -Staff (PFCC-S) survey. The FCC innovations were developed by stakeholders based on the COVID-19 restrictions, pre-survey results, parents' and clinicians' interviews and integrative review, then implemented via a flowchart. Post-implementation evaluation was via repeated surveys. Comparisons were made pre-and post-implementation, with Mann-Whitney U-test statistics for parents and Wilcoxon's Rank Sum for staff. RESULTS A total of 185 (85 pre; 100 post) parents and 20 (pre and post; paired group) health care professionals participated. Because of COVID-19, many planned interventions were unfeasible, however, other innovations achieved (e.g., structured telephone updates, information booklet revision). There was an increase in parents' perception of respect ([median] 2.50-3.50), collaboration (2.33-3.33) and support (2.60-3.60) domains and overall (2.50-3.43; p < .001; 95% CI: 2.93-3.11). Interdisciplinary professionals' perception of FCC did not significantly change pre-and post-implementation/COVID-19 pandemic for respect (3.00-2.92), collaboration (3.22-3.33), support (3.20-3.20) and overall (3.15-3.20; 95% CI: 3.10-3.25). CONCLUSION Despite the challenges of COVID-19 restricting NICU access, the provision of FCC was maintained and even improved. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Further research is necessary to develop FCC practice innovations associated with communication, across diverse health care systems and resources.

Abstract
Family-centred care (FCC) is recognised as a fundamental practice principle in the delivery of contemporary paediatric allied health care; however, limited evidence exists on how to translate FCC theory into practice for Child Development Services (CDS). This study describes and evaluates parent perceptions of a family-centred model of care at a publicly funded CDS where a care pathway consists of parent orientation-to-service session, integrated transdisciplinary allied health assessment, feedback and goal setting appointments. 15 participants completed a semi-structured in-depth interview and rating scales of service satisfaction. Interview data were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis and data triangulation were completed by three investigators to enhance validity and descriptive statistics were identified. The model of care was positively perceived by families, with participants identifying value in communication; fostering of respect and partnership and therapist skills. Service themes that influenced parents' perception of the model included benefits of a holistic approach to care and staffing continuity. Uncertainty of wait list time frames and transition/discharge points were identified as a source of stress by families. This research investigates what components of FCC are meaningful to consumers and considers practical ideas of delivering care within a family-centred framework.

Abstract
AIMS To examine the critical role that an academic clinical partnership played in the development and refinement of a family management intervention in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). BACKGROUND Clinical-academic partnerships enable earlier infusion of implementation science principles into development of evidence-based interventions, yet partners often report difficulty leveraging resources, personnel and expertise to create beneficial outcomes for all. DESIGN Longitudinal qualitative descriptive design. METHODS To develop and refine the intervention, designated time was taken during meetings of the NICU's Parent Partnership Council (PPC), a committee comprised of nursing, physician and allied health leadership and former NICU parents. Partnership was also achieved by having bedside clinical nurses, in addition to medical and nursing students, participate as research team members. Qualitative data were collected via email, research team and Council meetings, and informal individual chats with key stakeholders (N = 25) and NICU mothers (N = 22). Qualitative data were analysed deductively using thematic analysis based on MacPhee's partnership logic model and the Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance (RE-AIM) model. The consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research checklist guided our work. RESULTS During Council meetings, the clinical-academic nurse, Director of Family-Integrated Care and Council members identified the need for a family management intervention, and worked together to develop and refine PREEMIE PROGRESS. Mothers found the intervention had numerous strengths and perceived a benefit knowing they helped future parents. CONCLUSIONS This work was only possible by leveraging both the university's technology/research resources and the clinical expertise of the NICU staff and PPC. Co-authored presentations, publications and grant funding continued this NICU's legacy in family-centred care and helped shape the clinical-academic nurse's career. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Clinical-academic partnerships can promote excellence in nursing practice, research and education through swifter knowledge translation and earlier infusion of implementation science principles into the development of evidence-based nursing interventions.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to identify gaps in support for parents of children with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. DESIGN AND METHODS Using a mixed-methods approach, the researchers first studied the parental and care team experience through interviews of Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome mothers and members of the inter-professional care team and then conducted an international survey of 690 Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome primary caregivers to validate the qualitative findings. RESULTS Parental and care team interviews revealed three main gaps in parental support, including lack of open communication, unrealistic parental expectations, and unclear inter-professional team roles. Survey results found that parents whose children were diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome after birth indicated significant dissatisfaction with the care team's open communication and welcoming of feedback (p = 0.008). As parents progress through the stages of surgical intervention, they also indicate significant dissatisfaction with the care team's anticipation of parental emotional needs and provision of coping resources (p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS Parental support interventions should focus on providing resources to help parents cope, helping the care team model open communication, and welcoming feedback on the parental experience. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Interventions should be piloted with parents who are in the later stages of the surgical intervention timeline or whose children were diagnosed after birth as they are the populations who perceived the least support within this study.

Abstract
Family-centred care (FCC) has been established as a best practice model for child disability services internationally. However, further empirical support is required to explore the operationalization and efficacy of FCC, in the absence of a universal practice model. This review aimed to identify the key processes and outcomes of FCC in early intervention (EI) settings and the factors that impact FCC. A systemic review was conducted exploring the processes and outcomes of FCC delivered to children predominantly aged 0-6 years with disabilities/suspected disabilities and families as part of EI or early services. The search procedure was informed by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines (Moher et al., 2009). Narrative analysis of data was guided by Braun and Clarke (2006, 2014). Data were presented as per the standards for reporting qualitative research (SRQR; O'Brien et al., 2014). Forty-two studies were included. The majority (90.5%) outlined the processes of FCC, with 59.5% of studies detailing outcomes. Processes were largely reported as qualitative data and/or subscales of the Measure of Processes of Care (MPOC; King et al., 1995), which were subsequently collated. Findings indicated eight key operational processes and corresponding outcomes. Variables that hinder or facilitate FCC included family/professional characteristics, family/service resources, and parent attitudes, engagement and agency. FCC was largely conceptualized as the application of services to children and their families. Critical perspectives on FCC are discussed. Abstract
Family-Integrated Care (FICare) empowers parents to play an active role as a caregiver for their infant in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This model of care is associated with improved neonatal outcomes, such as improved weight gain and higher breastfeeding rates at discharge in infants admitted to level III NICUs; however, its effectiveness in level II NICUs remains unproven. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the model on neonatal outcomes in a cluster randomized controlled trial conducted in 10 level II NICUs randomized to Alberta FICare or standard care. Mothers and their preterm infants born between 32+0 and 34+6 weeks' gestational age were included. The primary outcome was the proportion of infants who regained their birth weight (BW) after 14 days of life. The analysis included 353 infants/308 mothers at Alberta FICare sites and 365 infants/306 mothers at standard care sites. There was no difference in the proportion of infants who had regained their BW by 14 days between the groups. A lack of perceived improved weight gain trajectory for those in the FICare group is attributed to a shorter length of hospital stay and infants being discharged prior to regaining BW.

Abstract
Aims The aim of this study was to examine the potential association of family‐centred care as perceived by parents during a NICU stay with parents’ depressive symptoms at discharge and at 4 months corrected for infant age. Design A longitudinal, multicentre cohort study was conducted from 2018 to 2020 in 23 NICUs across 15 countries. Methods Parents (n = 635 mothers, n = 466, fathers) of infants (n = 739) born before 35 weeks of gestation and admitted to the participating NICUs were enrolled to the study during the first weeks of their infants’ hospitalizations. They responded to Digi‐FCC daily text messages inquiring about their perception of family‐centred care provided by NICU staff. In addition, they completed a questionnaire assessing their overall perception of family‐centred care at discharge. Parents’ depressive symptoms were measured by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale at discharge and again after discharge when their infants were at 4 months corrected for age. Results The mothers’ and the fathers’ perceptions of family‐centred care were associated with their depressive symptoms at discharge and at 4 months corrected age, controlling for gestational age, multiple birth, parent education and relationship status. Parents’ participation in infant care, care‐related decisions and emotional support provided to parents by staff explained the variation in the parents’ perceptions of family‐centred care. The factors facilitating the implementation of family‐centred care included unlimited access to the unit for the parents and for their significant others, as well as amenities for parents. Conclusions Our study shows that family‐centred NICU care associates with parents’ depressive symptoms after a NICU stay. Impact Depression is common in parents of preterm infants. The provision of family‐centred care may protect the mental well‐being of parents of preterm infants.
