Biomass Ppower generation: A pathway to carbon neutrality

In light of the pressing need to reduce carbon emissions, the biomass power generation industry has gained significant attention and has increasingly become a crucial focus in China. However, there are still considerable gaps in the historical background, status, and prospects of biomass power generation. Herein, the historical and current status of biomass power generation in China are systematically reviewed, with a particular emphasis on supportive policies, environmental impacts, and future projections. By 2022, the newly installed capacity for biomass power generation reached 3.34 MW with a total installed capacity of 41 MW. The power produced from biomass power generation is 182.4 billion kWh in China. The total installed capacity and generated power in 2022 were 1652 and 1139 folds higher than in 2006 when the first biomass generation plant was established. However, disparities in the distribution of biomass resources and power generation were observed. Key drivers of the industry development include tax, finance, and subsidy policies. Under the implementation of the 14th Five-Year Plan for renewable energy development and the goal of carbon neutrality, biomass power generation may achieve great success through more targeted policy support and advanced technologies that reduce air pollutant emissions. If combined with Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) technology, biomass power generation will make its contribution to carbon neutrality in China.

Beyond biomass production: Enhancing biodiversity while capturing carbon in short rotation coppice poplar plantations

Biodiversity is essential for the functioning of ecosystems and the provision of services. In recent years, the role of plantations in mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration has been highlighted. In the Mediterranean area, high-density poplar plantations in short-rotation with resprouting management (SRC) have been established for biomass purposes on mostly irrigated agricultural land, coexisting with rainfed and irrigated agricultural crops. This study aims to assess the contribution of these plantations to this type of agroforest ecosystem in terms of biodiversity. For this purpose, both flora and fauna diversity were evaluated both within and outside of the plantation. Additionally, the accumulated carbon in the biomass, as well as in the accompanying vegetation within the plantation, was assessed. Different indices were used to evaluate both the intrinsic diversity of the forest plantation and the degree of substitution and complementarity between the different communities of the landscape. Our findings reveal distinct biodiversity patterns in the land-use scenarios sampled. Specifically, we observed significantly higher flora-species richness in SRC plantations than in the adjacent agricultural land, whereas fauna richness showed a similar but slightly higher level in the forested area. A moderate level of complementarity between land uses was found for insects and mammals (around 45 %), contrasting with high complementarity for birds (87 %) and flora (90 %). This suggests substantial turnover and replacement among these ecological environments. Our results indicate that a second rotation (4 year) plantation could accumulate a total of 61.6 Mg C ha-1, and even though adventitious flora represents <2 % of the total carbon accumulated, its importance in providing ecosystem services is considerable. Hence, these findings evidence the fact that SRC poplar plantations can enhance biodiversity in Mediterranean agroforest ecosystems and actively contribute to various provisioning ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration, reflecting a multi-objective approach that extends beyond biomass production.

Upscaling vascular aboveground biomass and topsoil moisture of subarctic fens from Unoccupied Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to satellite level

Arctic and subarctic ecosystems are experiencing rapid changes in vegetation composition and productivity due to global warming. Tundra wetlands are especially susceptible to these changes, which may trigger shifts in soil moisture dynamics. It is therefore essential to accurately map plant biomass and topsoil moisture. In this study, we mapped total, wood, and leaf above ground biomass and topsoil moisture in subarctic tundra wetlands located between Norway and Finland by linking models derived from Unoccupied Aerial Vehicles with multiple satellite data sources using the Extreme Gradient Boosting algorithm. The most accurate predictions for topsoil moisture (R2 = 0.73) used a set of red edge-based vegetation indices with a spatial resolution of 20 m per pixel. On the contrary, wood biomass showed the lowest accuracies across all tested models (R2 = 0.38). We found a trade-off between the spatial resolution and the performance of upscaling models, where smaller pixel sizes generally led to lower accuracies. However, we were able to compensate for reduced accuracy at smaller pixel sizes using Copernicus phenology metrics. A modelling uncertainty assessment revealed that the uncertainty of predictions increased with decreasing pixel sizes and increasing number of co-predictors. Our approach could improve efforts to map and monitor changes in vegetation at regional to pan-Arctic scales.

Rotation of Celosia argentea and Sedum plumbizincicola promotes Cd phytoextraction efficiency

Most hyperaccumulators cannot maintain vigorous growth throughout the year, which may result in a low phytoextraction efficiency for a few months. In the present study, rotation of two hyperaccumulators is proposed to address this issue. An 18-month field experiment was conducted to evaluate the phytoextraction efficiency of Cd by the monoculture and rotation of Celosia argentea and Sedum plumbizincicola. The results showed that rotation increased amount of extracted Cd increased by 2.3 and 1.6 times compared with monoculture of C. argentea and S. plumbizincicola. In rotation system, the biomass of S. plumbizincicola and Cd accumulation in C. argentea increased by 54.4% and 40.7%, respectively. Rotation reduced fallow time and increased harvesting frequency, thereby enhancing Cd phytoextraction. Planting C. argentea significantly decreased soil pathogenic microbes and increased the abundances of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase genes, which may be beneficial for the growth of S. plumbizincicola. Planting S. plumbizincicola increased the abundance of sulfur oxidization (SOX) system genes and decreased soil pH (p < 0.05), thereby increasing the Cd uptake by C. argentea. These findings indicated that rotation of C. argentea and S. plumbizincicola is a promising method for promoting Cd phytoextraction.

Enhancement of hydrazine accumulation in anammox bioreactors

The role of hydrazine (N2H4) in anammox metabolism has been widely studied; however, studies on N2H4 biosynthesis by anammox bacteria are limited in the literature. In this context, the current research aims to investigate the enhancement of biological N2H4 production in the anammox process in a long-term manner. The experimental studies started with the optimization of the operating conditions to achieve maximum N2H4 accumulation. Under favorable conditions (pH = 8.97 ± 0.08; T = 35.5 ± 0.5 °C; initial hydroxylamine dose = 1.46 ± 0.01 mM), 17.16 ± 0.64 mg L-1 of N2H4 accumulated in the batch systems. The continuity of N2H4 bioproduction was then evaluated by long-term observations. A continuous flow bioreactor was operated in four consecutive manipulated periods under optimized conditions. In the long-term operated bioreactor, 55.10 ± 0.30 mg L-1 N2H4 was accumulated at optimal conditions, which was 2.5 times higher than reported in the literature. Although manipulation of the bioreactor operating conditions initially resulted in a significant increase in N2H4 bioaccumulation, it subsequently caused a severe deterioration in anammox activity. However, this could be mitigated by increasing the biomass concentration in the anammox systems. In addition, the relative abundance of Candidatus Kuenenia decreased by 1.88% throughout the long-term operation.

Seasonal variations and sources of atmospheric EPFRs in a megacity in severe cold region: Implications for the influence of strong coal and biomass combustion

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) can pose exposure risks by inducing the generation of reactive oxygen species. As a new class of pollutants, EPFRs have been frequently detected in atmospheric particulate matters. In this study, the seasonal variations and sources of EPFRs in a severe cold region in Northeastern China were comprehensively investigated, especially for the high pollution events. The geomean concentration of EPFRs in the total suspended particle was 6.58 × 1013 spins/m3 and the mean level in winter was one order of magnitude higher than summer and autumn. The correlation network analysis showed that EPFRs had significantly positive correlation with carbon component, K+ and PAHs, indicating that EPFRs were primarily emitted from combustion and pyrolysis process. The source appointment by the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model indicated that the dominant sources in the heating season were coal combustion (48.4%), vehicle emission (23.1%) and biomass burning (19.4%), while the top three sources in the non-heating season were others (41.4%), coal combustion (23.7%) and vehicle emissions (21.2%). It was found that the high EPFRs in cold season can be ascribed to the extensive use of fossil fuel for heating demand; while the high EPFRs occurred in early spring were caused by the large-scale opening combustion of biomass. In summary, this study provided important basic information for better understanding the pollution characteristics of EPFRs, which suggested that the implementation of energy transformation and straw utilization was benefit for the control of EPFRs in severe cold region.

Physiology and transcriptomic analysis revealed the mechanism of silicon promoting cadmium accumulation in Sedum alfredii Hance

Silicon (Si) effectively promote the yield of many crops, mainly due to its ability to enhance plants resistance to stress. However, how Si helps hyperaccumulators to extract Cadmium (Cd) from soil has remained unclear. In this study, Sedum alfredii Hance (S. alfredii) was used as material to study how exogenous Si affected biomass, Cd accumulation, antioxidation, cell ultrastructure, subcellular distribution and changes in gene expression after Cd exposure. The study has shown that as Si concentration increases (1, 2 mM), the shoot biomass of plants increased by 33.1%-63.6%, the Cd accumulation increased by 31.9%-96.6%, and the chlorophyll, carotenoid content, photosynthetic gas exchange parameters significantly increased. Si reduced Pro and MDA, promoted the concentrations of SOD, CAT and POD to reduce antioxidant stress damage. In addition, Si promoted GSH and PC to chelate Cd in vacuoles, repaired damaged cell ultrastructure, improved the fixation of Cd and cell wall (especially in pectin), and reduced the toxic effects of Cd. Transcriptome analysis found that genes encoding Cd detoxification, Cd absorption and transport were up-regulated by Si supplying, including photosynthetic pathways (PSB, LHCB, PSA), antioxidant defense systems (CAT, APX, CSD, RBOH), cell wall biosynthesis such as pectinesterase (PME), chelation (GST, MT, NAS, GR), Cd absorption (Nramp3, Nramp5, ZNT) and Cd transport (HMA, PCR). Our result revealed the tentative mechanism of Si promotes Cd accumulation and enhances Cd tolerance in S. alfredii, and thereby provides a solid theoretical support for the practical use of Si fertilizer in phytoextraction.

Lignocellulosic biomass for biochar production: A green initiative on biowaste conversion for pharmaceutical and other emerging pollutant removal

Lignocellulosic waste generation and their improper disposal has accelerated the problems associated with increased greenhouse gas emissions and associated environmental pollution. Constructive ways to manage and mitigate the pollution associated with lignocellulosic waste has propelled the research on biochar production using lignocellulose-based substrates. The sustainability of various biochar production technologies in employing lignocellulosic biomass as feedstock for biochar production not only aids in the lignocellulosic biomass valorization but also helps in carbon neutralization and carbon utilization. Functionalization of biochar through various physicochemical methods helps in improving their functional properties majorly by reducing the size of the biochar particles to nanoscale and modifying their surface properties. The usage of engineered biochar as nano adsorbents for environmental applications like dye absorption, removal of organic pollutants and endocrine disrupting compounds from wastewater has been the thrust areas of research in the past few decades. This review presents a comprehensive outlook on the up-to-date research findings related to the production and engineering of biochar from lignocellulosic biomass and their applications in environmental remediation especially with respect to wastewater treatment. Further a detailed discussion on various biochar activation methods and the future scope of biochar research is presented in this review work.

Benefit of aerosol reduction to winter wheat during China's clean air action: A case study of Henan Province

A strongly declining aerosol radiative effect has been observed in China since 2013 after implementing the clean air action, yet its impact on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production remains unclear. We use satellite measures and a biophysical crop model to assess the impact of aerosol-induced radiative perturbations on winter wheat production in the agricultural belt of Henan province from 2013 to 2018. After calibrating parameters with the extended Fourier Amplitude Sensitivity Test (EFAST) and the generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation (GLUE) method, the DSSAT CERES-Wheat model was able to simulate crop biomass and yield more accurately. We found that the aerosol negatively impacted wheat biomass by 21.87% and yield by 22.48% from 2006 to 2018, and the biomass effects from planting to anthesis were more significant compared to anthesis to maturity. Due to the strict clean air action, under all-sky conditions, the surface solar shortwave radiation (SSR) in 2018 increased by about 7.08% over 2006-2013 during the wheat growing seasons. As a result of the improvement of crop photosynthesis, winter wheat biomass and yield increased by an average of 5.46% and 2.9%, respectively. Our findings show that crop carbon uptake and yield will benefit from the clean air action in China, helping to ensure national food and health security.

Sustainable media feedstocks for cellular agriculture

The global food system is shifting towards cellular agriculture, a second domestication marked by cultivating microorganisms and tissues for sustainable food production. This involves tissue engineering, precision fermentation, and microbial biomass fermentation to establish food value chains independent of traditional agriculture. However, these techniques rely on growth media sourced from agricultural, chemical (fossil fuels), and mining supply chains, raising concerns about land use competition, emissions, and resource depletion. Fermentable sugars, nitrogen, and phosphates are key ingredients derived from starch crops, energy-intensive fossil fuel based processes, and finite phosphorus resources, respectively. This review explores sustainable alternatives to reduce land use and emissions associated with cellular agriculture media ingredients. Sustainable alternatives to first generation sugars (lignocellulosic substrates, sidestreams, and gaseous feedstocks), sustainable nitrogen sources (sidestreams, green ammonia, biological nitrogen fixation), and efficient use of phosphates are reviewed. Especially cellulosic sugars, gaseous chemoautotrophic feedstocks, green ammonia, and phosphate recycling are the most promising technologies but economic constraints hinder large-scale adoption, necessitating more efficient processes and cost reduction. Collaborative efforts are vital for a biotechnological future grounded in sustainable feedstocks, mitigating competition with agricultural land and emissions.

Aerobic granulation and resource production under continuous and intermittent saline stress

Three sequential batch reactors (SBR) were operated to evaluate salt addition's impact on granulation, performance, and biopolymer production in aerobic granular sludge (AGS) systems. System R1 was fed without adding salt (control); system R2 operated with saline pulses, i.e., one cycle with salt (2.5 g NaCl/L) addition followed by another without salt; and R3 received continuous supplementation of 2.5 g NaCl/L. The results indicated that the reactors supplemented with salt presented higher concentrations of mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSS) and better settleability than R1, showing that osmotic pressure contributed to biomass growth, accelerated granulation, and improved physical characteristics. The faster granulation occurred in R2, thus proving the beneficial effects of intermittent salt addition through alternating pulses. Salt addition did not impair the simultaneous removal of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. In fact, R2 showed better carbon removals. In conclusion, continuous or intermittent (pulsed) supplementation of 2.5 g NaCl/L did not lead to increased production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and alginate-like exopolymers (ALE). This outcome could be attributed to the low saline concentration employed, a higher food-to-microorganism (F/M) ratio observed in R1, and possibly greater endogenous consumption of biopolymers in the famine period in R2 and R3 due to the greater solids retention time (SRT). Therefore, this study brings important results that contribute to a better understanding of the effect of salt in continuous dosing or in pulses as a selection pressure strategy to accelerate granulation, as well as the behavior of the AGS systems for saline effluents.

Forensic taphonomic experimental design matters: a study assessing clothing and carrion biomass load on scavenging in Cape Town, South Africa

The identification of unknown human remains is a significant and ongoing challenge in South Africa, worsened by the country's high murder rate. The rate of decomposition in South Africa is significantly influenced by vertebrate scavenging, which, if not considered, can impede the accurate estimation of the post-mortem interval. Scavenging patterns vary greatly depending on the environment and ecological region, and there is limited data for the Western Cape province. To address this gap, two clothed and uncaged pig carcasses weighing 60 kg each were placed in the field in July 2021 and January 2022, respectively. Motion-activated infrared-capable trail cameras were used to observe decomposition, scavenger species, and their activities. Additionally, a comparative sample of 16 unclothed carcasses deployed between 2014 and 2016 in the same habitat were analyzed to assess the impact of clothing and biomass load. The study found three main results: (1) Regardless of habitat or biomass load, it took significantly less time to reach decomposition milestones (25%, 50%, and 75%) during the summer season; (2) the presence of mongoose scavengers had a greater impact on the time required to reach milestones during winter compared to summer; and (3) single carcass deployments reached the milestones faster than multi-carcass deployments in both seasons. This research highlights the potential inaccuracy of current methods for estimating the post-mortem interval when scavenging activity is not considered or documented in the underlying experimental data, particularly for environments or ecological biomes where scavengers actively impact decomposition rates.

Investigating quantitative approach for microalgal biomass using deep convolutional neural networks and image recognition

The effective monitoring of microalgae cultivation is crucial for optimizing their energy utilization efficiency. In this paper, a quantitative analysis method, using microalgae images based on two convolutional neural networks, EfficientNet (EFF) and residual network (RES), is proposed. Suspension samples prepared from two types of dried microalgae powders, Rhodophyta (RH) and Spirulina (SP), were used to mimic real microalgae cultivation settings. The method's prediction accuracy of the algae concentration ranges from 0.94 to 0.99. RH, with a distinctively pronounced red-green-blue value shift, achieves a higher prediction accuracy than SP. The prediction results of the two algorithms were significantly superior to those of a linear regression. Additionally, RES outperforms EFF in terms of its generalization ability and robustness, which is attributable to its distinct residual block architecture. The RES provides a viable approach for the image-based quantitative analysis.

Ecotoxicological effects of polyethylene microplastics and lead (Pb) on the biomass, activity, and community diversity of soil microbes

Microplastics and heavy metals are ubiquitous and persistent contaminants that are widely distributed worldwide, yet little is known about the effects of their interaction on soil ecosystems. A soil incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the individual and combined effects of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) and lead (Pb) on soil enzymatic activities, microbial biomass, respiration rate, and community diversity. The results indicate that the presence of PE-MPs notably reduced soil pH and elevated soil Pb bioavailability, potentially exacerbated the combined toxicity on the biogeochemical cycles of soil nutrients, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, and the activities of soil urease, sucrase, and alkaline phosphatase. Soil CO2 emissions increased by 7.9% with PE-MPs alone, decreased by 46.3% with single Pb, and reduced by 69.4% with PE-MPs and Pb co-exposure, compared to uncontaminated soils. Specifically, the presence of PE-MPs and Pb, individually and in combination, facilitated the soil metabolic quotient, leading to reduced microbial metabolic efficiency. Moreover, the addition of Pb and PE-MPs modified the composition of the microbial community, leading to the enrichment of specific taxa. Tax4Fun analysis showed the effects of Pb, PE-MPs and their combination on the biogeochemical processes and ecological functions of microbes were mainly by altering amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, membrane transport, and signal transduction. These findings offer valuable insights into the ecotoxicological effects of combined PE-MPs and Pb on soil microbial dynamics, reveals key assembly mechanisms and environmental drivers, and highlights the potential threat of MPs and heavy metals to the multifunctionality of soil ecosystems.

Kinetic study on anaerobic digestion of long-chain fatty acid enhanced by activated carbon adsorption and direct interspecies electron transfer

This study applied granular activated carbon (GAC) to improve the anaerobic digestion of long-chain fatty acid (LCFA). New kinetics were considered to describe the effect of GAC on the LCFA degradation, including i) The adsorption kinetics of GAC for LCFA, ii) The β-oxidation pathway of LCFA, iii) The attached biomass improved by direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET). The developed model simulated the anaerobic digestion of stearic acid, palmitic acid, myristic acid, and lauric acid with 1.00 and 2.00 g l-1 of GAC. The simulation results suggested that adding GAC led to the increase of km,CnGAC and km,acGAC. As the concentration of GAC increased, the values of kinetic parameters increased while the accumulated acetate concentration decreased. Thus, GAC improved the kinetic parameters of the attached syntrophic communities.

Enhanced biomass production and harvesting efficiency of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii under high-ammonium conditions by powdered oyster shell

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii prefers ammonium (NH4+) as a nitrogen source, but its late-stage growth under high-NH4+ concentrations (0.5 ∼ 1 g/L) is retarded due to medium acidification. In this study, oyster shell powders were shown to increase the tolerance of C. reinhardtii to NH4+ supplementation at 0.7 g/L in TAP medium in 1-L bubble-column bioreactors, resulting in a 22.9 % increase in biomass production, 62.1 % rise in unsaturated fatty acid accumulation, and 19.2 % improvement in harvesting efficiency. Powdered oyster shell mitigated medium acidification (pH 7.2-7.8) and provided dissolved inorganic carbon up to 8.02 × 103 μmol/L, facilitating a 76.3 % NH4+ consumption, release of up to 189 mg/L of Ca2+, a 42.1 % reduction in ζ-potential and 27.7 % increase in flocculation activity of microalgae cells. This study highlights a promising approach to utilize powdered oyster shell as a liming agent, supplement carbon source, and bio-flocculant for enhancing biomass production and microalgae harvesting in NH4+-rich environments.

A Comparative Analysis Assessing Growth Dynamics of Locally Isolated Chlorella sorokiniana and Chlorella vulgaris for Biomass and Lipid Production with Biodiesel Potential

Prior research has emphasized the potential of microalgae in biodiesel production, driven by their ability to replace fossil fuels. However, the significant costs associated with microalgae cultivation present a major obstacle to scaling up production. This study aims to develop an eco-friendly microalgae cultivation system by integrating carbon dioxide from flue gas emissions with an affordable photobioreactor, providing a sustainable biomass production. The research evaluates the growth performance of Chlorella sorokiniana and Chlorella vulgaris across this integrated system for biomass and lipid production. Results indicate substantial biomass yields of 1.97 and 1.84 g/L, with lipid contents of 35 % and 41 % for C. sorokiniana and C. vulgaris, respectively. The macrobubble photobioreactor demonstrates high potential for microalgae biomass and lipid production, yielding quality fatty acid methyl esters such as palmitic, linoleic and stearic. This study presents an environmentally friendly system for efficient microalgae cultivation, generating lipid-rich biomass suitable for biodiesel production.

Machine learning and statistical physics modeling of tetracycline adsorption using activated carbon derived from Cynometra ramiflora fruit biomass

The current investigation reports the usage of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and artificial neural network (ANN), the two recognized machine learning techniques in modelling tetracycline (TC) adsorption onto Cynometra ramiflora fruit biomass derived activated carbon (AC). Many characterization methods utilized, confirmed the porous structure of synthesized AC. ANN and ANFIS models utilized pH, dose, initial TC concentration, mixing speed, time duration, and temperature as input parameters, whereas TC removal percentage was designated as the output parameter. The optimized configuration for the ANN model was determined as 6-8-1, while the ANFIS model employed trimf input and linear output membership functions. The obtained results showed a strong correlation, indicated by high R2 values (ANNR2: 0.9939 & ANFISR2: 0.9906) and low RMSE values (ANNRMSE: 0.0393 & ANFISRMSE: 0.0503). Apart from traditional isotherms, the dataset was fitted to statistical physics models wherein, the double-layer with a single energy satisfactorily explained the physisorption mechanism of TC adsorption. The sorption energy was 21.06 kJ/mol, and the number of TC moieties bound per site (n) was found to be 0.42, conclusive of parallel binding of TC molecules to the adsorbent surface. The adsorption capacity at saturation (Qsat) was estimated to be 466.86 mg/g - appreciably more than previously reported values. These findings collectively demonstrate that the AC derived from C. ramiflora fruit holds great potential for efficient removal of TC from a given system, and machine learning approaches can effectively model the adsorption processes.

Analysis of ammonia-nitrogen removal kinetics by stage in pilot scale vertical flow wetlands treating landfill leachate in series

This study explored the effect stage number and plant type have on ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N) removal kinetics in a two-stage pilot-scale vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) system treating landfill leachate. Half of the VFCW columns were planted with Typha latifolia and the other half Scirpus californicus, and half of the columns were loaded with municipal solid waste landfill leachate (diluted to 1 part leachate to 2 parts total) with the effluent from these columns was collected in two separate barrels. The remaining columns were loaded with the effluent collected from the first columns, creating a two-stage VFCW system with four unique pairs to be tested. The leachate used here experienced no prior pre-treatment, and average influent concentrations of NH3-N for the first- and second-stage VFCWs were 508 and 321 mg L-1, respectively- much higher than many other VFCW treatment systems. Some reduction in chemical oxygen demand was observed, as well as generation of nitrate and nitrite, evidence of nitrification. No apparent correlation between aboveground biomass and removal of NH3-N was observed. Overall removal efficiency of NH3-N through two stages of VFCWs was 53.7% for columns planted with T. latifolia and 58.3% for those planted with S. Californicus. Average NH3-N removal efficiencies for the first stage VFCWs were 32.7% and 34.3%, while those in the second stage were 31.3% and 36.5%; no significant difference was observed between the first and second stage, suggesting that stage number does not have a significant effect on the removal efficiency of NH3-N in the primary treatment of landfill leachate via VFCWs. However, average mass removal rates of NH3-N in the first stage were 166 and 175 mg L-1 d-1; the second stage was significantly lower at 99.4 and 112 mg L-1 d-1, indicating that the first stage removed more pollutants overall.

Effects of microalgal (Tetradesmus obliquus MCX38) attachment on photobioreactor treatment efficiency of raw swine wastewater

Attachment of microalgae on the inner surfaces of photobioreactors impacts the efficiency of swine wastewater treatment by reducing the light intensity, which has been overlooked in previous studies. This study investigated the relationship between microalgal attachment biomass and light intensity in photobioreactors, determined the optimal attachment time for effective pollutant removal, and clarified the mechanisms of microalgal attachment in swine wastewater. After 9 days of treatment, the attached biomass in the photobioreactor increased from 0 to 6.4 g/m2, decreasing the light intensity from 2,000 to 936 lux. At the 24 h optimal attachment time, the concentrations of chemical oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen, and total phosphorus decreased from 2725.1, 396.4, and 87.2 mg/L to 361.2, 4.9, and 0.8 mg/L, respectively. Polysaccharides in the extracellular polymeric substances released by microalgae play a significant role in facilitating microalgae attachment. Optimizing the microalgal attachment time within photobioreactors effectively mitigates pollutant concentrations in swine wastewater.

Quality of cellulose and biostimulant extracts from Oedogonium calcareum cultivated during primary wastewater treatment

A practical two-product cascading biorefinery was developed to extract a biostimulant and cellulose from the freshwater filamentous macroalga Oedogonium calcareum grown while treating primary wastewater. Biostimulant production provides a valuable extract with production of disinfected residual biomass for further product development. Both Escherichia coli and F-specific RNA bacteriophage, indicators of human pathogens contamination, were absent from the residual biomass. The chemical composition of the biostimulant was complex, consisting of growth-promoting substances, free amino acids, and minerals. The O. calcareum cellulose fractions yielded between 9.5% and 10.1% (w/w) with purities from 84% to 90% and closely resembled microcrystalline cellulose. Biostimulant extraction improved cellulose quality by increasing crystallinity from 59% to 62%. Biomass condition, drying process, and biostimulant production influenced the crystallinity index. This study demonstrates a two-step process of biostimulant and cellulose extraction from wastewater-grown Oedogonium, simultaneously disinfecting biomass and isolating high-quality cellulose as a sustainable alternative to conventional extraction methods.

Evolving perspectives on lutein production from microalgae - A focus on productivity and heterotrophic culture

Increased consumer awareness for healthier and more sustainable products has driven the search for naturally sourced compounds as substitutes for chemically synthesized counterparts. Research on pigments of natural origin, such as carotenoids, particularly lutein, has been increasing for over three decades. Lutein is recognized for its antioxidant and photoprotective activity. Its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier allows it to act at the eye and brain level and has been linked to benefits for vision, cognitive function and other conditions. While marigold flower is positioned as the only crop from which lutein is extracted from and commercialized, microalgae are proposed as an alternative with several advantages over this terrestrial crop. The main barrier to scaling up lutein production from microalgae to the commercial level is the low productivity compared to the high costs. This review explores strategies to enhance lutein production in microalgae by emphasizing the overall productivity over lutein content alone. Evaluation of how culture parameters, such as light quality, nitrogen sufficiency, temperature and even stress factors, affect lutein content and biomass development in batch phototrophic cultures was performed. Overall, the total lutein production remains low under this metabolic regime due to the low biomass productivity of photosynthetic batch cultures. For this reason, we describe findings on microalgal cultures grown under different metabolic regimes and culture protocols (fed-batch, pulse-feed, semi-batch, semi-continuous, continuous). After a careful literature examination, two-step heterotrophic or mixotrophic cultivation strategies are suggested to surpass the lutein productivity achieved in single-step photosynthetic cultures. Furthermore, this review highlights the urgent need to develop technical feasibility studies at a pilot scale for these cultivation strategies, which will strengthen the necessary techno-economic analyses to drive their commercial production.

MXene/biochar composites for enhanced wastewater reclamation and bioenergy production: A kinetics and thermodynamics study

The study explores the synthesis and utilization of biochar (BC) and multi-layer MXene to MXene/biochar (MB) composites for wastewater treatment. Simultaneously, it also investigates their energy generation potential through biomass and soil property assessments. The integrated column and batch treatments have shown significant results, elevating total dissolved solids from 63.7 to 125.5 mg L-1 with column treatment, while reducing them to 6.37 % and 1.35 % with BC and MB treatment, respectively. BC with high carbon content, demonstrated increased hydrophobicity, which was amplified by the integration of MXene, thereby enhancing its potential for advanced wastewater treatment. Treated wastewater exhibited elevated nutrient concentrations (Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Na, and NH4+), promoting the growth of Pennisetum purpureum. WW_B shows promising energy potential, with a higher heating value of 25.03 MJ kg-1 and a lower heating value of 23.57 MJ kg-1. They demonstrated high volatile matter exceeding 70.9 wt %, and a fixed carbon from 10.02 to 27.53 wt %, signifying their potential for efficient conversion and bio-oil yield during pyrolysis. The ultimate analysis emphasized significant carbon, with oxygen content ranging from 43.42 to 47.78 wt %., influencing combustion characteristics. MT_B exhibited its suitability for energy production through thermochemical conversion, underlined by its high flammability and low volatile ignition values. In the absence of BC, the Ea ranged from 24.77 to 77.88 kJ mol-1 in wastewater and from 21.67 to 69.6 kJ mol-1 in MB treated wastewater. Meanwhile, when soil contained BC and was irrigated with wastewater, the Ea varied from 24.66 to 80.91 kJ mol-1. In the case of MB treated wastewater, it ranged from 25.01 to 75.79 kJ mol-1. The research thereby affirms the potential of MB composites to advance water and energy sustainability setting us for broader nexus-based applications.

Analysis of the remediation competence of Aspergillus flavus biomass in wastewater of the dyeing industry: An in-vitro study

The dyeing industry effluent causes severe environmental pollution and threatens the native flora and fauna. The current study aimed to analyze the physicochemical parameters of dyeing industry wastewater collected in different sites (K1, E2, S3, T4, and V5), as well as the metal tolerance and decolourisation ability of Aspergillus flavus. Furthermore, the optimal biomass quantity and temperatures required for efficient bioremediation were investigated. Approximately five dyeing industry wastewater samples (K1, E2, S3, T4, and V5) were collected from various sampling stations, and the majority of the physical and chemical characteristics were discovered to be above the permissible limits. A. flavus demonstrated outstanding metal resistance to As, Cu, Cr, Zn, Hg, Pb, Ni, and Cd on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) plates at concentrations of up to 500 g mL-1. At 4 g L-1 concentrations, A. flavus biomass decolorized up to 11.2-46.5%. Furthermore, 35°C was found to be the optimal temperature for efficient decolourisation of A. flavus biomass. The toxicity of 35°C-treated wastewater on V. mungo and prawn larvae was significantly reduced. These findings indicate that the biomass of A. flavus can be used to decolorize dyeing industry wastewater.

Magnetization and ZIF-67 modification of Aspergillus flavus biomass for tetracycline removal from aqueous solutions: A stable and efficient composite

In the present work, the biomass of Aspergillus flavus (AF) was modified using magnetic nanoparticles MnFe2O4 and metal-organic framework of ZIF-67, and its ability to remove tetracycline antibiotic (TCH) was investigated. With the help of physicochemical tests, AF biomass modification with ZIF-67 and MnFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles was confirmed. Based on the BET value, AF-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 (139.83 m2/g) has a higher surface value than AF (0.786 m2/g) and AF/MnFe2O4 (17.504 m2/g). Also, the magnetic saturation value revealed that the modified biomass can be isolated from the treated solution using a simple magnetic field. Maximum TCH elimination (99.04%) using AF-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 was obtained at pH 7, adsorber mass of 1 g/L, adsorption time of 40 min, and TCH content of 10 mg/L. The thermodynamic study indicated that the TCH abatement using the desired composite is spontaneous and exothermic. The experimental results showed that the adsorption process is compatible with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich model. The maximum adsorption capacity for AF, AF-MnFe2O4, and AF-MnFe2O4-ZIF-67 was quantified to be 9.75 mg/g, 25.59 mg/g, and 43.87 mg/g, respectively. The reusability of the desired adsorbers was examined in up to 8 steps. The outcomes showed that the adsorbers can be used several times in TCH elimination. The provided composite can remove TCH from hospital wastewater, so it can be suggested for use in water and wastewater treatment works.
