Abstract
The Nm23 protein has been implicated in a wide variety of biological processes, including suppression of metastasis, phytochrome responses in plants, and regulation of differentiation. Here we examine whether Nm23 is involved in Xenopus laevis oocyte maturation. We found that Nm23 is present in oocytes, indicating that it has the potential to be a regulator of maturation. Furthermore, modest overexpression of Nm23 inhibited progesterone-induced oocyte maturation. This maturation-inhibitory activity was shared by both the acidic Nm23-H1 isoform and the basic Nm23-H2 isoform and by Nm23 mutants that lack nucleoside diphosphate kinase activity (Nm23-H1 H118F and Nm23-H2 H118F). Expression of Nm23 proteins delayed the accumulation of Mos and the activation of p42 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) in progesterone-treated oocytes but had no discernible effect on Mos-induced p42 MAPK activation. Therefore, Nm23 appears to act upstream of the Mos/mitogen-activated protein/extracellular signal-regulated kinase kinase/p42 MAPK cascade. These findings suggest a novel biological role for Nm23.

Abstract
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES The aim of our study was to assess the image quality, radiation dose, and clinical applicability of low-dose, volumetric helical CT in the evaluation of bronchiectasis. METHODS Volumetric helical CT scans (120 kVp, 3-mm collimation, pitch of 2, and reconstruction interval of 2 mm) were obtained through the thorax at four levels of tube current: 150, 100, 70, and 40 mA. There were a total of 12 patients who underwent CT scan either for suspected bronchiectasis or for lung cancer screening, with three patients allocated to each current level. Five radiologists assessed and compared image quality of the helical CT scans obtained at the various exposure levels. Radiation doses of helical CT performed with four different current settings and of high-resolution CT (120 kVp, 170 mA, 1-mm collimation, and 10-mm intervals) were measured. The diagnostic usefulness of the 40-mA helical CT images was compared with that of high-resolution CT by two observers in 52 patients with known or suspected airway diseases. RESULTS With helical CT, there was no significant difference in image quality among the four different levels of current (P > 0.05). Radiation doses associated with the 40-, 70-, 100-, and 150-mA helical techniques were 3.21 mGy (range, 3.02-3.57), 4.81 mGy (range, 3.89-5.93), 6.46 mGy (range, 6.01-7.31), and 10.4 mGy (range, 8.93-12.1), respectively, whereas that of high-resolution CT was 2.17 mGy (range, 1.90-2.67). Of 52 patients, 44.5 and 47 patients (the mean of positive interpretations by the five observers) were diagnosed with bronchiectasis at high-resolution and low-dose helical CT, respectively. Of 928 segments, bronchiectasis was seen in 152.5 segments on high-resolution CT and in 193.5 segments on helical CT. The interobserver agreement (k-values) was acceptable for both techniques. CONCLUSIONS With acceptable images and similar radiation dose, low-dose volumetric helical CT at 40 mA may offer more information than does high-resolution CT in the evaluation of bronchiectasis.

Abstract
Eleven lignans (1-11) were isolated from the CH2Cl2 fraction of the bark of Machilus thunbergii Sieb. et Zucc. (Lauraceae). These were identified as (-)-acuminatin (1), (-)-isoguaiacin (2), meso-dihydroguaiaretic acid (3), (+)-galbacin (4), (-)-sesamin (5), (+)-galbelgin (6), machilin A (7), machilin G (8), licarin A (9), and nectandrin A (10) and B (11). Primary cultures of rat hepatocytes were co-incubated for 90 min with the hepatotoxin CCl4 and each of the 11 lignans (50 microM). Hepatoprotective activity was determined by measuring the level of glutamic pyruvic transaminase released into the medium from the primary cultures of rat hepatocytes. (-)-Acuminatin, (-)-isoguaiacin and meso-dihydroguaiaretic acid all significantly reduced the level of glutamic pyruvic transaminase released. Further investigation revealed that these three compounds significantly preserved the levels and the activities of glutathione, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase. (-)-Acuminatin, (-)-isoguaiacin and meso-dihydroguaiaretic acid also ameliorated lipid peroxidation as demonstrated by a reduction of malondialdehyde production. These results suggest that (-)-acuminatin, (-)-isoguaiacin and meso-dihydroguaiaretic acid exert diverse hepatoprotective activities, perhaps by serving as potent antioxidants.

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the longitudinal history of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and to test the capacity of ganciclovir as effective therapy in CMV-seropositive renal transplant recipients. The CMV viremia was detected with CMV pp65 antigenemia assay in 153 renal transplants. The recipients were classified as having low-grade and high-grade CMV infections according to the severity of CMV infection. The recipients with low-grade CMV infections were observed without ganciclovir treatment, and the recipients with high-grade CMV infection were randomly assigned to ganciclovir-treated and untreated groups. The clinical course between low-grade and high-grade CMV infections was evaluated. All recipients with low-grade CMV infection (n = 62) showed spontaneous remission regardless of immunosuppresants. In high-grade CMV infection (n = 31), the ciclosporin A treated group (n = 11) showed no evidence of CMV disease, and the methylprednisolone-treated group (n = 8) showed CMV disease in 1 (25%) of 4 ganciclovir-untreated recipients. In the OKT3 group (n = 12), symptomatic CMV infection was observed in 6 (100%) ganciclovir-untreated recipients contrary to no CMV disease in the ganciclovir-treated group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the CMV antigenemia assay is effective in monitoring CMV viremia, and ganciclovir treatment should be done during early CMV viremia in OKT3-treated recipients.

Abstract
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS3 protease is responsible for the processing of the viral polyprotein and is considered as a primary target for the development of anti-HCV therapy. We have developed a genetic method in yeast to screen for good substrate sequences of the NS3 protease. A library of fusion proteins was constructed with a transcription factor, GAL4, linked to the intracellular domain of an integral membrane protein, STE2, by a randomized protease substrate sequence. In yeast cells expressing NS3 protease, the substrate sequences in the fusion proteins were specifically recognized and cleaved. This cleavage resulted in the release of GAL4 from the cytoplasmic membrane and the subsequent activation of reporter genes by GAL4, which was detected by the growth of yeast cells on selective media. Based on the analysis of 69 isolated substrate sequences, a consensus sequence was deduced: (Glu/Asp)-X-Val-Val-(Leu/Pro)-Cys / (Ser/Ala), with the scissile bond being located between Cys and Ser or Ala and X not being determined. This is largely consistent with the previous results obtained by biochemical methods. An oligopeptide containing the deduced sequence was highly efficiently cleaved in vitro by the purified NS3 protease. These data demonstrated that the present genetic method could be used as an efficient tool for the in vivo determination of substrate specificity of proteases.

Abstract
Factors implicated in changes of the hepatic glutathione concentration following acute ethanol administration were examined in rats. Adult female rats were treated with either ethanol (4 g/kg, p.o.) or an isocaloric glucose solution. The hepatic reduced glutathione (GSH) concentration decreased rapidly after ethanol intake with a maximum diminution, approximately 50% of the control value, being observed at t = 6 h. The hepatic GSH concentration gradually increased, and finally rebounded at 24 h after ethanol ingestion. The dose of ethanol induced a transient increase in the oxidized glutathione (GSSG)/GSH ratio, which was associated with a significant reduction in GSH rather than elevation in GSSG [corrected]. The activity of gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase (GCS), the rate-limiting enzyme for glutathione synthesis, and the cysteine concentration in liver were also measured. The GCS activity was depressed to approximately 80% of the control value at t = 2.5 h followed by rapid recovery, but no difference in the hepatic cysteine concentration between control and ethanol treated rats was observed for 24 h, suggesting that the reduction in glutathione synthesis may not play a major role in the significant depletion of this tripeptide in liver. The total glutathione concentration was measured both in prehepatic and posthepatic inferior vena cava blood. The glutathione concentration in posthepatic blood was approximately twice as high as that of prehepatic blood in control rats. Acute ethanol administration doubled the elevation of glutathione in posthepatic blood measured at t = 2.5 h. The sinusoidal efflux of glutathione estimated from the increase in blood glutathione concentration was greater than the total amount of its depletion in the liver of rats treated with ethanol. The results suggest that in the liver of rats treated acutely with ethanol, glutathione efflux plays the most important role in the reduction of this tripeptide, which would be aggravated by a transient decrease in glutathione synthesis and by increased consumption in association with its metabolism.

Abstract
This case illustrates that a child having severe neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE) with seizure and cerebral vascular disease showed excellent clinical outcome in response to intravenous methylprednisolone and cyclophosphamide pulse, and presented unexplained red ears phenomenon.

Abstract
The inhibitory effects of the traditional herbal medicine Jindangwon (JDW) on streptozotocin (ST)-induced diabetic mellitus were studied using the ST-treated diabetic model. Glucokinase activity of pancreatic islets was severely impaired by ST treatment. However, when ST-treated islets were treated with 1 mg/ml of JDW, the enzyme activities of glucokinase and hexokinase were protected, glucose-6-phosphatase was not. When the effects of JDW on ST-induced ATP/ADP ratio of islets were assayed, JDW was effective in restoring of ATP/ADP ratio. In addition, ST decreased the enzyme activities of PDH, while JDW had a protective effect on the enzyme. ST-induced cGMP accumulation was significantly inhibited by JDW treatment. Furthermore, ST-induced nitrite formation was significantly inhibited by JDW treatment. JDW also showed the suppressed nitrite production in ST-treated pancreatic islet cells. When the islets (200/condition) were treated with ST (5 mM for 30 min), and then JDW was added to the ST-treated cells, 1.0 mg/ml of JDW showed the activated and recovered aconitase activity in pancreatic islet cells. When the effect of ST on the gene expression of pancreatic GLUT2 and glucokinase were examined, the level of GLUT2 and glucokinase mRNA in pancreatic islets was significantly decreased. However, JDW protected and improved the expression of protein and genes, indicating that JDW is effective on ST-induced inhibition of gene expression of GLUT2, glucokinase and proinsulin in islets. These results suggested that JDW is effective in this model to treat ST-induced diabetes.

Abstract
We report CT and MR imaging findings in a case of Castleman's disease involving the retropharyngeal space in a middle-aged woman. On CT scans, a well-marginated, homogeneous, and densely enhancing mass was detected in the right retropharyngeal space. The mass was isointense to the muscle on T1-weighted MR images, hyperintense to the muscle on T2-weighted MR images, and showed homogeneous, strong enhancement on contrast-enhanced T1-weighted MR images. The linear hypointense signal in an arborizing pattern was observed within the mass on all pulse sequences.

Abstract
Exercise decreases insulin resistance and increases maximal exercise capacity as estimated from maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). Recent reports have demonstrated that the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content of blood is correlated with VO2max in healthy subjects (mean age 31 years) and is inversely correlated with insulin resistance parameters. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of regular exercise on the mtDNA content in the peripheral blood of 16 healthy young women of mean age 24.8 (SD 6.2) years and 14 healthy older women of mean age 66.7 (SD 5.8) years. The exercise programme lasted for 10 weeks and consisted of three sessions a week, each of 1 h and aiming to attain 60%-80% of VO2max. The mtDNA content of peripheral blood was measured by competitive polymerase chain reaction. The VO2max had significantly increased following the exercise programme [from 33.1 (SD 3.4) to 35.2 (SD 3.4) ml x kg(-1) min(-1) in the young and from 24.3 (SD 5.3) to 30.3 (SD 7.3) ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) in the older women, both P < 0.05]. Exercise decreased systolic blood pressure, and concentrations of triglyceride, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), glucose and insulin in the blood of the young and of total cholesterol, LDL-C and glucose in that of the older women. High density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) in the young women was increased by exercise. The mtDNA content significantly increased following the exercise programme in both groups [from 27.1 (SD 17.9) to 52.7 (SD 44.6) amol x 5 ng(-1) genomic DNA in the young and from 15.3 (SD 10.2) to 32.1 (SD 30.0) amol x 5 ng(-1) genomic DNA in the older women, both P < 0.05]. There was a significant positive correlation between the change in mtDNA content and the change in VO2max (r = 0.74 in the young and r = 0.71 in the older women, both P < 0.01). In conclusion, 10 weeks of moderate intensity, regular exercise increased the mtDNA content in peripheral blood and decreased insulin resistance parameters. This data suggests that increase in the mtDNA content may be associated with increased insulin sensitivity.

Abstract
We recently reported the development of a cell line, AMC-HN-9, established from an undifferentiated carcinoma (UDC) of the parotid gland. AMC-HN-9 consists mostly of spindle-shaped cells, has poor in vitro adhesiveness and an in vitro appearance that is different from that of other epithelial cell lines. To test the hypothesis that structural or functional abnormalities of the hemidesmosomes might contribute to the morphological appearance and biology of UDCs, we studied the expression of hemidesmosomal proteins in AMC-HN-9. Flow cytometry, indirect immunofluorescence, immunoprecipitation, reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, and cytogenetic analysis were used. AMC-HN-9 cells express the alpha6 and beta4 integrin subunits at nearly the same intensity as head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cell lines. However, AMC-HN-9 does not express BP180 and BP230, although there is no gross deletion of the loci of the BP180 and BP230 genes, suggesting that a more subtle mechanism has silenced these genes. In conclusion, the failure to express certain hemidesmosomal proteins is a likely explanation for the functional and morphologic characteristics of UDC cells both in vivo and in vitro.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to examine the role of lipid peroxidation and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) activation in H(2)O(2)-induced inhibition of Na(+)-dependent phosphate (Na(+)-Pi) uptake in opossum kidney (OK) cells. H(2)O(2) inhibited Na(+)-Pi uptake in a dose-dependent manner. H(2)O(2)-induced inhibition of Na(+)-Pi uptake was prevented by dithiothreitol and glutathione. A potent antioxidant, DPPD, had no effect on H(2)O(2) inhibition of Na(+)-Pi uptake, despite completely inhibiting lipid peroxidation induced by H(2)O(2). However, in primary cultured rabbit proximal tubular cells, the effect of H(2)O(2) on Na(+)-Pi uptake was significantly prevented by DPPD, suggesting a species difference in the role of lipid peroxidation in the inhibition of Na(+)-Pi uptake occurring with H(2)O(2). t-Butylhydroperoxide (tBHP) caused the inhibition of Na(+)-Pi uptake that was prevented by DPPD in OK cells and rabbit proximal tubular cells. The PARP inhibitor 3-aminobenzamide completely protected the inhibition of Na(+)-Pi uptake induced by H(2)O(2) but not by tBHP. H(2)O(2)-induced ATP depletion was prevented by 3-aminobenzamide but not by DPPD. tBHP-induced ATP depletion was prevented by DPPD, whereas it was not altered by 3-aminobenzamide. Effects of H(2)O(2) and tBHP on Na(+)-Pi uptake and ATP depletion were prevented by an iron chelator, deferoxamine, suggesting that the oxidants inhibit Na(+)-Pi uptake through an iron-dependent mechanism. The extent of DNA damage by tBHP was similar to that by H(2)O(2). These results indicate that the effect of H(2)O(2) on membrane transport function in OK cells is associated with PARP activation but not lipid peroxidation, whereas the effect of tBHP is associated with lipid peroxidation.

Abstract
Oxidative stress has been implicated in a wide range of cellular damage which includes DNA oxidation, membrane lipid peroxidation, and apoptosis. In our study, we found that overexpression of PLC-beta1 in NIH3T3 fibroblasts protected them from cell death occuring in response to oxidative stress. Cell death caused by treatment with prooxidant tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBH), H2O2, or CdCl2 was considerably suppressed in PLC-beta1 overexpressed NIH/beta1-14 cells in comparison to control NIH/neo cells. However, overexpression of PLC-beta1 failed to protect the cells from toxicity by diamide or KCN. In addition, while accumulation of c-fos mRNA was observed within 30 min of TBH treatment in vector transfected NIH/neo cells, TBH-induced c-fos mRNA generation was completely suppressed in NIH/beta1-14 cells, while that of c-jun and GAPDH was not affected. These findings suggest that PLC-beta1 may play a role in process that can protect cells from oxidative stress-induced cell death.

Abstract
We report a 25-year-old Korean woman with Adult onset Still's disease (AOSD) presented with renal amyloidosis, which had developed four years after disease onset. We successfully treated her with prednisolone, colchicine and cyclophosphamide. A review of the literature uncovered about 10 cases, most of which were treated by various regimens that resulted in poor outcomes. Renal amyloidosis should be suspected in patients with AOSD who have unexplained proteinuria. Although the mechanism of renal amyloid deposition is not well known, earlier histopathologic diagnosis and choice of regimen may affect prognosis.

Abstract
Parasymphyseal insufficiency fractures are uncommon. Furthermore, none have been reported in systemic rheumatic diseases other than rheumatoid arthritis. In this article we report on parasymphyseal insufficiency fractures in a patient with mixed connective tissue disease.

Abstract
Gold salts have been used for many years in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The common side effects are mucocutaneous reactions, but hepatotoxic reaction and isolated neutropenia are rare complications. We report a 62-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis who had developed hepatitis and neutropenia simultaneously after receiving 137.5 mg of sodium aurothiomalate.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyse chromosome aberrations in nuclear-power-plant workers taking account of the mean lifetime of lymphocytes (MLTL). MATERIALS AND METHODS Analysis of chromosome aberrations was performed on peripheral lymphocytes from 395 nuclear-power-plant workers and 135 controls. An equivalent acute dose (EAD) was calculated utilizing MLTL values of either 4.3 or 10 years. RESULTS Using an MLTL value of 10 years produced an EAD range of 0.O1 mSv -182mSv(mean 46.6mSv), while using an MLTL, of 4.3 years produced results ranging from 0.01 mSv to 86.2 mSv (mean 23.4 mSv). A significant increase of chromosome-type exchange by the equivalent acute dose was observed using an MLTL of either 10 or 4.3 years when including the control in the analysis, but a significant increase was not seen when only the exposed was considered. A significant increase of chromosome-type deletion by EAD was seen even when only the exposed group was considered. CONCLUSIONS EAD values based on an MLTL of either 4.3 or 10 years, as well as cumulative dose, showed no significant association with chromosome aberrations, when radiation workers only were analysed. The narrow dose range examined in this study might have contributed to this finding.

Abstract
Min's glasses are specially manufactured in order to enhance the satisfaction of the wearer and increase treatment effectiveness. We compared the effectiveness of Min's glasses with that of conventional occlusion therapy in amblyopic pediatric patients. We prospectively studied 60 amblyopic patients. For four to 30 months, 24 of the patients were treated with conventional patch occlusion (patch group) and 36 of them were treated with Min's glasses (glasses group). We compared the improvement in visual acuity and the treatment compliance between both groups, according to age (over six and less than six), sex, type of amblyopia, and the duration of treatment. Sixteen patients (66.7%) in the patch group and 32 patients (88.9%) in glasses group showed improvement in visual acuity (p = 0.002). The pre-treatment average log MAR acuity was 0.56 +/- 0.25 in the patch group, and 0.59 +/- 0.25 in the glasses group. The average improvement in visual acuity was a 0.17 log MAR score in the patch group, and a 0.31 log MAR score in the glasses group (p = 0.004). Compliance was 59.54% in the patch group and 83.44% in the glasses group (p = 0.012). The pre-treatment average log MAR acuity was 0.49 +/- 0.23 for children over six years of age in the patch group, and 0.58 +/- 0.28 for children over six years of age in the glasses group. For children over six years of age in the glasses group the improvement in visual acuity (0.29 log MAR score) was greater than for children over six years of age in the patch group (0.06 log MAR score) (p = 0.0003). The pre-treatment average log MAR acuity was 0.55 +/- 0.22 for female patients in the patch group, and 0.60 +/- 0.25 for female patients in the glasses group. Female patients in the glasses group also showed a greater visual acuity improvement (0.29 log MAR score) than female patients in the patch group (0.14 log MAR score) (p = 0.0028). However, there were no differences between the groups in patients less than six years of age and in male patients. In conclusion, Min's glasses were more effective than conventional treatment with a patch in improving visual acuity and encouraging compliance in pediatric amblyopic patients, especially in children over six years of age and in girls.

Abstract
We report a case of epidermolysis bullosa simplex, Dowling-Meara type (EBS-DM), which was associated with congenital pyloric atresia (PA) and various urologic abnormalities, a diagnosis confirmed by immunofluorescence mapping and electron microscopic findings. Immunofluorescent mapping showed the serum from a patient with bullous pemphigoid faintly binding to the floor of the blister, and monoclonal antibodies against type IV and VII collagens were also stained on the floor of the blister. Electron microscopy showed epidermolytic cleavage and prominent clumping of tonofilaments in the basal and suprabasal keratinocytes. An abdominal radiograph and barium swallow showed a complete obstruction at the pyloric channel level. The widespread bullae healed without any scar formation and the bullae formation was localized on the extremities after 3 months of age without any specific treatment. Multiple urologic abnormalities such as bilateral hydronephrosis, hydroureter and a distended bladder with trabeculation were observed at 12 months of age. Currently, with the patient at 4 years of age, bullae still appear on the hands and feet and nail shedding can be observed. The patient's father, a paternal uncle and a paternal aunt had had similar bullous eruptions in infancy, all of which had improved spontaneously by the age of one.

Abstract
In an attempt to dissect the virulence regulatory mechanism in Vibrio vulnificus, we tried to identify the V. cholerae transmembrane virulence regulator toxRS (toxRS(Vc)) homologs in V. vulnificus. By comparing the sequences of toxRS of V. cholerae and V. parahaemolyticus (toxRS(Vp)), we designed a degenerate primer set targeting well-conserved sequences. Using the PCR product as an authentic probe for Southern blot hybridization, a 1.6-kb BglII-HindIII fragment and a 1.2-kb HindIII fragment containing two complete open reading frames and one partial open reading frame attributable to toxR(Vv), toxS(Vv), and htpG(Vv) were cloned. ToxR(Vv) shared 55.0 and 63.0% sequence homology with ToxR(Vc) and ToxR(Vp), respectively. ToxS(Vv) was 71.5 and 65.7% homologous to ToxS(Vc) and ToxS(Vp), respectively. The amino acid sequences of ToxRS(Vv) showed transmembrane and activity domains similar to those observed in ToxRS(Vc) and ToxRS(Vp). Western blot analysis proved the expression of ToxR(Vv) in V. vulnificus. ToxRS(Vv) enhanced, in an Escherichia coli background, the expression of the V. vulnificus hemolysin gene (vvhA) fivefold. ToxRS(Vv) also activated the ToxR(Vc)-regulated ctx promoter incorporated into an E. coli chromosome. A toxR(Vv) null mutation decreased hemolysin production. The defect in hemolysin production could be complemented by a plasmid harboring the wild-type gene. The toxR(Vv) mutation also showed a reversed outer membrane protein expression profile in comparison to the isogenic wild-type strain. These results demonstrate that ToxR(Vv) may regulate the virulence expression of V. vulnificus.

Abstract
A series of conformationally controlled 2-PAM derivatives were prepared from 2-acetylpyridine and 2,3-pyrido[b]cycloalkenones in two steps and their reactivities towards parathion poisoned AChE were evaluated. The most planar 2,3-pyrido[b]cyclohexanone oxime methiodide showed an activity comparable to 2-PAM implying E-syn is that the most active conformation of 2-PAM in the biological system.

Abstract
The three-dimensional (3D) structure of the brain needs to be understood for accurate diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases. The brain of a cadaver may not always be available for dissection when it is needed. To overcome this problem, we attempted to create a 3D image and virtual dissection program of the brain using a Korean cadaver. The brain extracted from a Korean male cadaver was embedded in gelatin solution. 130 MRI of the brain were taken and 130 serially-sectioned specimens were made. All of MRI and specimens were inputted into the computer, and 10 brain components were manually segmented. A 3D image and virtual dissection program of the brain was made. Various virtual dissection functions were established, such as 1) sectioning the 3D image of the brain at free angles to represent its plane as a real image, segmented image, and MRI, 2) identifying the brain components represented in the sectioned plane, and 3) rotating the 3D image of the whole brain or the selected brain components at free angles. The resulting virtual dissection program of the brain is helpful in better understanding the 3D location and shape of the brain components and it is expected to be used as a CD-title or through Internet as an educational tool for medical students and doctors.

Abstract
Bifurcations associated with stability of the saddle fixed point of the Poincare map, arising from the unstable equilibrium point of the potential, are investigated in a forced Duffing oscillator with a double-well potential. One interesting behavior is the dynamic stabilization of the saddle fixed point. When the driving amplitude is increased through a threshold value, the saddle fixed point becomes stabilized via a pitchfork bifurcation. We note that this dynamic stabilization is similar to that of the inverted pendulum with a vertically oscillating suspension point. After the dynamic stabilization, the double-well Duffing oscillator behaves as the single-well Duffing oscillator, because the effect of the central potential barrier on the dynamics of the system becomes negligible.

Abstract
Surface sampling in industrial/environmental hygiene is a growing field that needs validated standardized methods. There are few standard methods, one being the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) method involving a portable, cordless air sampling pump. In the present work, the ASTM technique was modified to increase efficiency and versatility. A soil sample was first dried and sieved. Known weights of different sieved sizes (125 microns-180 microns, 90 microns-125 microns, and 63 microns-90 microns) were then sampled at an average flow rate of 4.0 +/- 0.2 L/min from a template of inner dimensions 10 cm by 10 cm on two different surfaces (rough and smooth). Five consecutive sampling passes were performed. For the smooth surface, the first pass efficiency for the largest particles were 45% +/- 45% (CV = 100%), and 75% +/- 20% (CV = 27%) for the smallest particles. After three passes, the efficiency independent of particle size exceeded 83 percent with a CV better than 11 percent. After five passes, the efficiency exceeded at least 85 percent with about the same precision as for three passes. The rough surface allowed higher efficiencies for the first two sampling passes. Three to five passes are recommended to achieve acceptable efficiencies for the surface loose dust/soil range 100 micrograms/cm2 to 1,500 micrograms/cm2.

Abstract
Biologic response to generated wear particles and subsequent aseptic loosening is a critical factor limiting the long-term survival of total hip replacements. To better understand the sequence of events leading to aseptic loosening and the role of the individual material components, fabricating metal particles similar to those present clinically is very important. We describe a simple milling technique to generate significant amounts of fine titanium-alloy (TiAlV) debris. A TiAlV rod was milled against a TiAlV plate in distilled water supplemented with antibiotics. The resulting debris were sedimented in alcohol and the fine debris were separated. Scanning electron microscopy analysis and particle size analysis demonstrated that the mean size of particles was 1.1 +/- 0.9 microm (range 0.2-4.2 microm). Sixty-two percent were smaller than 1.0 microm, and 85% were smaller than 2.0 microm. The particles generated had varying shapes, including angular or shard-like shapes with jagged and irregular outlines.
