Abstract
Common mallow (Malva sylvestris L.) is a perennial medicinal plant in the Malvaceae family, which is native to Asia, Europe, and North Africa. In July 2012, typical symptoms of anthracnose disease, with a disease incidence of ~70%, were observed on common mallow in the Medicinal Herb Garden of Shenyang Pharmaceutical University, Liaoning, China. The fungus mainly infected the stalks and leaves of M. sylvestris. Pinpoint, brownish lesions initially appeared at the flowering stage and the disease spread within the field. The lesions on stems gradually enlarged and became dark brown, elliptical, and slightly concave. Concurrently, acervuli and mucilaginous conidial masses of the pathogen appeared on lesions under moist conditions. Conidia were hyaline, one-celled, cylindrical with both ends rounded, and measured 10.0 to 12.5 × 2.5 to 4.0 μm (mean 11.3 × 3.3 μm). The fungus was isolated from symptomatic tissues. Small pieces from leaves and stems were surface disinfested with 70% ethanol and 1.5% sodium hypochlorite for 1 min, then rinsed three times with sterile distilled water, and cultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA) at 25°C. The colonies on PDA had initially white aerial mycelia, and later became greenish black with regularly whorled rings. To confirm Koch's postulates, five 3-month-old plants of M. sylvestris were inoculated with a conidial suspension (105 conidia/ml) prepared from PDA cultures incubated for 14 days. Five non-inoculated plants served as controls. The plants were maintained in the greenhouse at 22 to 25°C and about 75% relative humidity under natural daylight. Typical symptoms on inoculated plants were reproduced after ~10 to 14 days, whereas control plants remained asymptomatic. The pathogen was successfully recovered from symptomatic tissues and re-identified, completing Koch's postulates. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit -28S (LSU) region of rDNA was amplified with primers ITS1/ITS4 and NL1/NL4, respectively, and sequenced. Phylogenetic trees (ITS and LSU) that were obtained using MEGE3.1 with the neighbor-joining method showed that both of the isolates fall in the Colletotrichum trifolii clade. The representative sequences (ITS and LSU) were deposited in GenBank (Accession Nos. KJ155692 and KJ920935). The fungus isolated from symptomatic tissues was identified as C. trifolii on the basis of morphological, cultural characteristics, and sequence analysis (2). According to previous references, C. orbiculare and C. malvarum on Malvaceae were respectively described in America and Europe (1,3,4). However, the isolate from M. sylvestris significantly differed from those of C. orbiculare and C. malvarum in cultural characteristics and sequence analysis. In this paper, the results showed that M. sylvestris is a new host of C. trifolii. To our knowledge, this is the first report of mallow anthracnose caused by C. trifolii in China. References: (1) J. Abstract
Radermachera sinica is widely planted as an ornamental plant in homes, offices, and malls in China. A leaf spot of R. sinica occurred in Luoyang, China, from 2013 to 2014. Lesions mostly occurred in wounds and were irregular with light brown centers and purple borders. One or more lesions on a leaf sometimes covered the entire blade. Eighty plants were surveyed in Luoyang, with disease incidence of 17%. Five millimeter pieces from the borders of lesions were surface-disinfected with 75% ethanol for 30 s, 1% sodium hypochlorite for 5 min, washed three times in sterilized distilled water, placed on nutrient agar (NA) medium at 25°C in darkness, and incubated for 24 to 48 h. Four white, round, smooth, and shiny colonies were selected for further identification. All strains were gram-positive, aerobic rods with many peritrichous flagella, and could grow in medium containing 5% NaCl. The strains were positive for catalase, starch hydrolysis, liquefaction of gelatin, reduction of nitrate, acid production from glucose, mannitol, maltose, lactose, xylose, and pectinose. The strains were positive for phenylalanine deaminase, decomposition of tyrosine, and utilization of citrate. The strains were identified by biochemical tests as Bacillus megaterium (1). To confirm pathogenicity, the strains were grown on NA for 48 h and suspended in sterile distilled water to produce a suspension with a final concentration of 108 CFU/ml. Healthy leaves of biennial R. sinica plants were sterilized with 75% ethanol and washed three times with sterilized distilled water. Fresh wounds were made with a sterile needle on the healthy leaves. Each of four strains was tested by spray inoculation with a bacterial suspension on three leaves. Sterile distilled water was used as negative control. Plants were enclosed in plastic bags and placed in a growth chamber at 28°C with 80% relative humidity. After 5 days, water-soaked lesions were observed. Two weeks later, lesions 4 mm in diameter turned light brown with purple borders, and most of lesions occurred in puncture wounds. Symptoms similar to those observed on field plants developed on all inoculated leaves, while no symptoms appeared on the control leaves. B. megaterium was re-isolated from the lesions of inoculated leaves, but not from the control leaves. To confirm the bacterial identification, PCR was performed on the 16S rDNA gene with P1/P2 (P1: CAGAGTTTGATCCTGGCT, P2: AGGAGGTGATCCAGCCGCA) (2) and 1,463 bp of the 16S rDNA gene (GenBank Accession No. KJ789369) showed 100% sequence identity to B. megaterium DSM 319 (NC_014103.1). Abstract
BACKGROUND The aims of this study were to: (1) analyse the fluoride content of tank water; (2) determine whether the method of water collection or storage influenced fluoride content; and (3) survey participant attitudes towards water fluoridation. METHODS Plastic tubes and a questionnaire were distributed through dentists to households with water tanks in Victoria. A midstream tank water sample was collected and fluoride analysed in triplicate using ion chromatography RESULTS All samples (n = 123) contained negligible amounts of fluoride, with a mean fluoride concentration of <0.01 ppm (range: <0.01-0.18 ppm). No statistically significant association was found between fluoride content and variables investigated such as tank material, tank age, roof material and gutter material. Most people did not know whether their tank water contained fluoride and 40.8% preferred to have access to fluoridated water. The majority thought fluoride was safe and more than half of the respondents supported fluoridation. Fluoride content of tank water was well below the optimal levels for caries prevention. CONCLUSIONS People who rely solely on tank water for drinking may require additional exposure to fluoride for optimal caries prevention.

Abstract
A consequent tendency toward high-performance quantum information processing is to develop the fully integrated photonic chip. Here, we report the on-chip generation and manipulation of entangled photons based on reconfigurable lithium-niobate waveguide circuits. By introducing a periodically poled structure into the waveguide circuits, two individual photon-pair sources with a controllable electro-optic phase shift are produced within a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer, resulting in a deterministically separated identical photon pair. The state is characterized by 92.9±0.9% visibility Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. The photon flux reaches ∼1.4×10(7) pairs nm-1 mW-1. The whole chip is designed to contain nine similar units to produce identical photon pairs spanning the telecom C and L band by the flexible engineering of nonlinearity. Our work presents a scenario for on-chip engineering of different photon sources and paves the way to fully integrated quantum technologies.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study aimed to investigate the reduction of patulin (PAT) in apple juice by 12 inactivated Alicyclobacillus strains. The reduction rate of PAT by each strain was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results indicated that the removal of PAT was strain specific. Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris 92 and A. acidoterrestris 96 were the most effective ones among the 12 tested strains in the removal of PAT. Therefore, these two strains were selected to study the effects of incubation time, initial PAT concentration and bacteria powder amount on PAT removal abilities of Alicyclobacillus. The highest PAT reduction rates of 88·8 and 81·6% were achieved after 24-h incubation with initial PAT concentration of 100 μg l(-1) and bacteria powder amount of 40 g l(-1) , respectively. Moreover, it was found that the treatment by these 12 inactivated Alicyclobacillus strains had no negative effect on the quality parameters of apple juice. Similar assays were performed in supermarket apple juice, where inactivated Alicyclobacillus cells could efficiently reduce PAT content. Taken together, these data suggest the possible application of this strategy as a means to detoxify PAT-contaminated juices. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Inactivated Alicyclobacillus cells can efficiently reduce patulin concentration in apple juice. It provides a theoretical foundation for recycling of Alicyclobacillus cells from spoiled apple juice to reduce the source of pollution and the cost of juice industry. This is the first report on the use of Alicyclobacillus to remove patulin from apple juice.

Abstract
The present study was designed to investigate the cardioprotective effects of betaine on acute myocardial ischemia induced experimentally in rats focusing on regulation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and apoptotic pathways as the potential mechanism underlying the drug effect. Male Sprague Dawley rats were treated with betaine (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg) orally for 40 days. Acute myocardial ischemic injury was induced in rats by subcutaneous injection of isoproterenol (85 mg/kg), for two consecutive days. Serum cardiac marker enzyme, histopathological variables and expression of protein levels were analyzed. Oral administration of betaine (200 and 400 mg/kg) significantly reduced the level of cardiac marker enzyme in the serum and prevented left ventricular remodeling. Western blot analysis showed that isoproterenol-induced phosphorylation of STAT3 was maintained or further enhanced by betaine treatment in myocardium. Furthermore, betaine (200 and 400 mg/kg) treatment increased the ventricular expression of Bcl-2 and reduced the level of Bax, therefore causing a significant increase in the ratio of Bcl-2/Bax. The protective role of betaine on myocardial damage was further confirmed by histopathological examination. In summary, our results showed that betaine pretreatment attenuated isoproterenol-induced acute myocardial ischemia via the regulation of STAT3 and apoptotic pathways.

Abstract
To explore the association between the dopamine β-hydroxylase (DBH) gene C-1021T polymorphism and the occurrence of orthostatic hypotension (OH) in Chinese patients, the DBH C-1021T polymorphism was genotyped in 317 patients with OH and 664 age- and sex-matched controls with orthostatic normotension. All subjects underwent an upright posture study for the measurement of orthostatic blood pressure. OH was defined as a drop in blood pressure of 20/10 mm Hg or more within 3 min of assuming the upright posture. The allele frequency of the DBH C-1021T polymorphism in the orthostatic hypotensive group was similar to the orthostatic normotensive group (17.4 versus 14.9%, P>0.05). No statistical significant association was found between the distribution of the C-1021T genotypes and the risk of OH in both the orthostatic hypotensive and orthostatic normotensive groups even after adjustment for demographic parameters. Among the three different genotypes, blood pressure levels did not significantly differ in the general population in this study. The changes in orthostatic systolic or diastolic blood pressures among the different genotype groups were not detected (all P>0.05). The C-1021T polymorphism of the DBH was not associated with orthostatic hypotensive risk in a Chinese population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the performance of a massively parallel sequencing (MPS)-based test in detecting fetal sex chromosome aneuploidy (SCA) and to present a comprehensive clinical counseling protocol for SCA-positive patients. METHODS This was a retrospective study in a large patient cohort of 5950 singleton pregnancies which underwent MPS-based testing as a prenatal screening test for trisomies 21, 18 and 13, with X and Y chromosomes as secondary findings, in Southwest Hospital in China. MPS-based SCA-positive women were offered the choice of knowing whether their SCA results were positive and those who did commenced a two-stage post-test clinical counseling protocol. In Stage 1, general information about SCA was given, and women were given the option of invasive testing for confirmation of findings; in Stage 2, those who had chosen to undergo invasive testing were informed about the specific SCA affecting their fetus and their management options. RESULTS Thirty-three cases were classified as SCA-positive by MPS-based testing. After Stage 1 of the two-stage post-test clinical counseling session, 33 (100%) of these pregnant women chose to know the screening test results, and 25 (75.76%) underwent an invasive diagnostic procedure and karyotype analysis, in one of whom karyotyping failed. In thirteen cases, karyotyping confirmed the MPS-based test results (two X0 cases, seven XXX cases, three XXY cases and one XYY case), giving a positive predictive value of 54.17% (13/24 cases confirmed by karyotyping). After post-test clinical counseling session Stage 2, seven women chose to terminate the pregnancy: one X0 case, two XXX cases, the three XXY cases and the single XYY case. Six women decided to continue with pregnancy: one X0 case and five XXX cases. CONCLUSION Our study showed the feasibility of clinical application of the MPS-based test in the non-invasive detection of fetal SCA. Together with a two-stage post-test clinical counseling protocol, it leads to a well-informed decision-making procedure.

Abstract
Using a sample of 1.3 × 10(9) J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of η(')→π(+)π(-)π(+)π(-) and η(')→π(+)π(-)π(0)π(0). The measured branching fractions are B(η(')→π(+)π(-)π(+)π(-)) = [8.53 ± 0.69(stat.) ± 0.64(syst.)]×10(-5) and B(η(')→π(+)π(-)π(0) π(0)) = [1.82 ± 0.35(stat.) ± 0.18(syst.)] × 10(-4), which are consistent with theoretical predictions based on a combination of chiral perturbation theory and vector-meson dominance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polymorphism of rs2293855 in gene MTMR9 has been associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome. We aim to study the association of rs2293855 with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) intermediate phenotypes in a Han Chinese population. METHODS The polymorphism was genotyped in 838 Han Chinese individuals using Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS); all participants underwent a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT); associations between the polymorphism and glucose tolerance, indices of insulin secretion and indices of insulin sensitivity were analyzed. RESULTS The frequency of genotypes and alleles differed significantly between normal glucose tolerance and prediabetes (P=0.043 and P=0.009, respectively). The GG homozygous presented higher fasting plasma glucose (P=0.009), higher 2-hour plasma glucose (P=0.024) and higher glucose area under the curve (AUC, P=0.01). Moreover, the G allele of rs2293855 was associated with glucose intolerance (fasting glucose, P=0.012; glucose AUC, P=0.006; 2-h glucose, P=0.024); it is also associated with decreased indices of insulin sensitivity (fasting insulin, P=0.043; insulin sensitivity index composite, P=0.009; homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, HOMA-IR, P=0.008) and decreased indices of insulin secretion (HOMA of beta cell function, HOMA-B, P=0.028; insulinogenic index, P=0.003). In addition, the minor allele G was also associated with increased risk of prediabetes (OR=1.463, 95%CI: 1.066-2.009, P=0.018). CONCLUSIONS Polymorphism of rs2293855 in MTMR9 is associated with measures of glucose tolerance, indices of insulin secretion and indices of insulin sensitivity. We also suggest that allele G is likely to increase the risk of prediabetes by influencing both insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity.
