Abstract
AIM To characterize the imaging manifestations of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using multi-breath-hold two-dimensional susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) and compare to conventional liver magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-three patients with histopathologically confirmed HCC underwent conventional liver MRI, multi-breath-hold two-dimensional SWI, and contrast-enhanced CT preoperatively. The T1-weighted imaging (WI), T2WI, and SWI images were evaluated in consensus by two experienced radiologists. The tumour boundaries, blood products in the tumour, venous vessels, and non-tumour liver parenchyma were compared. RESULTS SWI demonstrated significantly better tumour boundary detection than T1WI and T2WI imaging (67.4 and 25.6%, respectively). The detection rate for intra-tumoural blood products using SWI was higher than that of T1WI and T2WI (76.7 and 16.3%, respectively). The detection rate for tumour venous vessels using SWI was 72.1%, while none was detected with conventional T1WI and T2WI. The detection rate for siderotic nodules in non-tumour liver parenchyma using SWI was higher than that of conventional T1WI and T2WI (65.1 and 20.9%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS SWI can provide more detailed information than conventional liver MRI in evaluation of tumour boundaries, blood products, venous vasculature, and non-tumour liver parenchyma. SWI is a valuable complement to conventional liver MRI.

Abstract
As a cutting-edge scientific research field, the detection of biological active substance is very important for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Boronic acid interacts with cis-1,2-or 1,3-diol to form five- or six-membered ring which could be used as the reporter of fluorescent sensors to probe carbohydrates and bioactive substance. This review summarizes the recent progress of boronic acid sensors for carbohydrates, L-dopamine, fluoride, copper ion, mercury ion and hydrogen peroxide. In this article, we will briefly introduce the chemistry of boronic acid, and then give a description of the fluorescence properties of each boronic acid sensor, such as fluorescence intensity change, excitation and emission wavelengths, quantum yields and water solubility. In addition, we summarize the mechanisms of fluorescent signal output for some representative sensors and discuss the strategies for developing new fluorescent probes.

Abstract
The objective of this work was to determine the expression pattern of microRNA (miR) associated with cellular proliferation, lipid metabolism, and innate immunity in dairy cow mammary gland tissue at different stages of lactation. The expression of miR-10a, miR-15b, miR-16, miR-21, miR-31, miR-33b, miR-145, miR-146b, miR-155, miR-181a, miR-205, miR-221, and miR-223 was studied by real-time reverse-transcription PCR in tissue (n=7/stage) harvested via repeated biopsies during the dry period (-30 d prepartum), the fresh period (7 d postpartum), and early lactation (30 d postpartum). Except for miR-31, all miR studied increased in expression between the dry and fresh periods. Among those upregulated, the expression of miR-221 increased further at early lactation, suggesting a role in the control of endothelial cell proliferation or angiogenesis, whereas the expression of miR-223 decreased at early lactation but to a level that was greater than in the dry period, suggesting it could play a role in the mammary response to pathogens soon after parturition. The expression of miR-31, a hormonally regulated miR that inhibits cyclin gene expression, was greater at early lactation compared with the dry period. From a metabolic standpoint, the consistent upregulation of miR-33b during early lactation compared with the dry period suggests that this miR may exert some control over lipogenesis in mammary tissue. Overall, results indicate that expression of miR associated with transcriptional regulation of genes across diverse biological functions is altered by stage of lactation. The specific roles of these miR during lactation will require further research.

Abstract
Allopolyploidisation is a prominent evolutionary force that involves two major events: interspecific hybridisation and genome doubling. Both events have important functional consequences in shaping the genomic architecture of the neo-allopolyploids. The respective effects of hybridisation and genome doubling upon genomic and transcriptomic changes in Brassica allopolyploids are unresolved. In this study, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP), methylation-sensitive amplification polymorphism (MSAP) and cDNA-AFLP approaches were used to track genetic, epigenetic and transcriptional changes in both allohexaploid Brassica (ArArBcBcCcCc genome) and triploid hybrids (ArBcCc genome). Results from these groups were compared with each other and also to their parents Brassica carinata (BBCC genome) and Brassica rapa (AA genome). Rapid and dramatic genetic, DNA methylation and gene expression changes were detected in the triploid hybrids. During the shift from triploidy to allohexaploidy, some of the hybridisation-induced alterations underwent reversion. Additionally, novel genetic, epigenetic and transcriptional alterations were also detected. The proportions of A-genome-specific DNA methylation and gene expression alterations were significantly greater than those of BC-genome-specific alterations in the triploid hybrids. However, the two parental genomes were equally affected during the ploidy shift. Hemi-CCG methylation changes induced by hybridisation were recovered after genome doubling. Full-CG methylation changes were a more general process initiated in the hybrid and continued after genome doubling. These results indicate that genome doubling could ameliorate genomic and transcriptomic alterations induced by hybridisation and instigate additional alterations in trigenomic Brassica allohexaploids. Moreover, genome doubling also modified hybridisation-induced progenitor genome-biased alterations and epigenetic alteration characteristics.

Abstract
Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) can inhibit and modify the growth of ice crystals. Two antifreeze protein genes, Apafp752 and Apafp914, were cloned from the desert beetle Anatolica polita (Coleoptera: Tenebriondae), and they shared 61.3 percent similarity at the amino acid level. Apafp752 also contained one variation in the most conserved TCT motif of beetle AFPs. Apafp752 and Apafp914 mRNAs had similar seasonal expression pattern. Both were stimulated by cold stress, but they expressed slightly differentially with Apafp752 being more sensitive to cold stress than Apafp914, and no more sensitive to desiccation stress than Apafp914. The thermal hysteresis activity (THA) in the beetle's hemolymph followed approximately the patterns of mRNA seasonal expression and expression upon environmental stress, with a time lag. Summer adults of the desert beetle also express mRNA of Apafp752 and Apafp914, and exhibit some hemolymph THA, suggesting other likely function of these proteins beyond antifreeze.

Abstract
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Cry1Ac protein is a toxin against different leaf-eating lepidopteran insects that attack poplar trees. In the present study, the mode of migration of the Bt-Cry1Ac protein within poplar grafts was investigated. Grafting was done using Pb29 (transgenic poplar 741 with cry1Ac genes), CC71 (transgenic poplar 741 with cry3A genes), non-transgenic poplar 741 and non-transgenic Populus tomentosa, either as scion or as rootstock. In order to detect migration of Bt-Cry1Ac protein from one portion of the graft union to different tissues in the grafted plant, ELISA analysis was employed to assess the content of Bt-Cry1Ac protein in the phloem, xylem, pith and leaves of the grafted poplar. To further verify migration of Bt-Cry1Ac protein, Clostera anachoreta larvae, which are susceptible to Bt-Cry1Ac protein, were fed leaves from the control graft (i.e., graft portion that originally did not contain Bt-Cry1Ac protein). The results showed that Bt-Cry1Ac protein was transported between rootstock and scion mainly through the phloem. Migration of Bt-Cry1Ac protein in the grafted union was also evidenced in that the leaves of the control graft did have a lethal effect on C. anachoreta larvae in laboratory feeding experiments.
