Abstract
OBJECTIVE The interleukin-10 (IL-10) gene polymorphism (-1082A/G) has been shown to be associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but findings are not consistent across studies. The aim of our meta-analysis was to assess the association between the -1082A/G polymorphism in the IL-10 gene and SLE. METHODS We searched all publications on the association between the IL-10 (-1082A/G) polymorphism and SLE in PubMed, Elsevier Science Direct, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Wanfang (Chinese). Meta-analysis was conducted using software Stata version 10.1. Meta-odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) based on fixed-/random-effects models depended on Cochran's Q-statistic and I(2) values. RESULTS A total of 17 studies with 2396 cases and 3653 controls were included in this meta-analysis. Meta-analysis was performed for genotypes GG versus AA, GG + AG versus AA, GG versus AG + AA, and G allele versus A allele. Significant differences were found in genotype distribution between SLE and normal controls in whole-population GG versus AA (OR = 1.428, 95% CI = 1.006-2.208). Similar results were detected in the dominant genetics effect of the G allele (OR = 1.202, 95% CI = 1.030-1.403). No significant association was found in allele distribution in whole-population G versus A (OR = 1.125, 95% CI = 0.998-1.269). In subgroup analysis by ethnicity, significant association was found when GG + AG versus AA was performed in a European population (OR = 1.240, 95% CI = 1.022-1.503) and GG versus AG + AA was performed in an Asian population (OR = 3.596, 95% CI = 1.389-9.311). Significant association was found between genotype distribution in Asians (OR = 4.491, 95% CI = 1.552-13.000). Publication year was detected as the source of heterogeneity. In the stratified analysis by publication year, the pooled OR was 1.049 (95% CI = 0.940-1.171; P (heterogeneity) = 0.431; I(2) ( )= 0.4%) in subgroup 1 (publication years 1999-2004). No significant association was found between the IL-10 (-1082 G) allele and SLE in subgroup 1 (Z = 0.85, p = 0.431). In subgroup 2 (publication years 2005-2011), the pooled OR was 1.327 (95% CI = 1.125-1.565; P (heterogeneity) = 0.143; I(2) ( )= 35.8%). Significant association was found between the IL-10 (-1082 G) allele and SLE (Z = 3.36, p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis demonstrates the association between the IL-10 (-1082A/G) polymorphism and SLE. However, further studies are needed for a definitive conclusion.

Abstract
Recovery of valuable materials from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) is quite difficult because WPCBs is a heterogeneous mixture of polymer materials, glass fibers, and metals. In this study, WPCBs was treated using ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methylimizadolium tetrafluoroborate [EMIM+][BF4-]). Experimental results showed that the separation of the solders went to completion, and electronic components (ECs) were removed in WPCBs when [EMIM+][BF4-] solution containing WPCBs was heated to 240 °C. Meanwhile, metallographic observations verified that the WPCBs had an initial delamination. When the temperature increased to 260 °C, the separation of the WPCBs went to completion, and coppers and glass fibers were obtained. The used [EMIM+][BF4-] was treated by water to generate a solid-liquid suspension, which was separated completely to obtain solid residues by filtration. Thermal analyses combined with infrared ray spectra (IR) observed that the solid residues were bromine epoxy resins. NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) showed that hydrogen bond played an important role for [EMIM+][BF4-] dissolving bromine epoxy resins. This clean and non-polluting technology offers a new way to recycle valuable materials from WPCBs and prevent environmental pollution from WPCBs effectively.

Abstract
Recycling of waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) is an important subject not only for the protection of environment but also for the recovery of valuable materials. A feasibility study was conducted to dissolve bromine epoxy resins of WPCBs using ionic liquid (IL) of 1-ethyl-3-methylimizadolium tetrafluoroborate [EMIM(+)][BF(4)(-)] (nonaqueous green solvent) for recovering copper foils and glass fibers. Experimental results indicated that the initial delamination had seen from the cross-section of the WPCBs by mean of metallographic microscope and digital camera when WPCBs were heated in [EMIM(+)][BF(4)(-)] at 240°C for a duration of 30 min. When temperature was increased to 260°C for a duration of 10 min, the bromine epoxy resins of WPCBs were throughout dissolved into [EMIM(+)][BF(4)(-)] and the separations of copper foils and glass fibers from WPCBs were completed. This clean and non-polluting technology offers a new way to recycle valuable materials from WPCBs and prevent the environmental pollution of WPCBs effectively.

Abstract
The effect of transient stress waves on the microstructure of HMX–Estane, a polymer-bonded explosive (PBX), is studied. Calculations carried out concern microstructures with HMX grain sizes on the order of 200 μm and grain volume fractions in the range of 0.50–0.82. The microstructural samples analysed have an aspect ratio of 5:1 (15×3 mm), allowing the transient wave propagation process resulting from normal impact to be resolved. Boundary loading is effected by the imposition of impact face velocities of 50–200 m s
−1
. Different levels of grain–binder interface strength are considered. The analysis uses a recently developed cohesive finite element framework that accounts for coupled thermal–mechanical processes involving deformation, heat generation and conduction, failure in the forms of microcracks in both bulk constituents and along grain/matrix interfaces, and frictional heating along crack faces. Results show that the overall wave speed through the microstructures depends on both the grain volume fraction and interface bonding strength between the constituents and that the distance traversed by the stress wave before the initiation of frictional dissipation is independent of the grain volume fraction but increases with impact velocity. Energy dissipated per unit volume owing to fracture is highest near the impact surface and deceases to zero at the stress wavefront. On the other hand, the peak temperature rises are noted to occur approximately 2–3 mm from the impact surface. Scaling laws are developed for the maximum dissipation rate and the highest temperature rise as functions of impact velocity, grain volume fraction and grain–binder interfacial bonding strength.

Abstract
A plant's ability to maintain an optimal cytosolic K(+)/Na(+) ratio has long been cited as a key feature of salinity tolerance. As traditional whole-leaf nutrient analysis does not account for tissue and organelle-specific ion sequestration, the predictive value of this index at the whole-plant level is not always satisfactory. Consequently, suitable in situ methods for functionally assessing the activity of the key membrane transporters contributing to this trait at the cellular level need to be developed. The aim of this work was to investigate the extent to which plasma membrane transporter-mediated Na(+) exclusion and KOR-mediated K(+) retention traits, measured with the microelectrode ion flux measuring (MIFE) technique, are inheritable in wheat, and whether the MIFE technique has the potential to be used in combination with molecular markers to determine QTLs for these transporter proteins. Experiments involved two bread (Triticum aestivum) and two durum (Triticum turgidum) wheat lines contrasting in their salinity tolerance. Net Na(+), K(+) and H(+) fluxes were measured from 6-day-old roots of parental lines and their F(1) hybrids upon addition and removal of NaCl. These results were complemented by assessment of whole-plant physiological and agronomic characteristics. We show evidence for a strong heritability of plasma membrane transporter-mediated Na(+) exclusion and K(+) retention traits in wheat at the cellular level. This opens the prospect of using the MIFE technique to map the position of these transporters on particular loci of wheat chromosomes. The next obvious step would be to pyramid these traits in one ideotype with superior salinity tolerance.

Abstract
The macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a hypoxia regulated gene that has a variety of tumorigenic functions. In clear cell renal carcinoma (CCRC), hypoxic signaling is constitutively active because of the frequent loss of function of the von Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor protein. We therefore sought to assess the expression of MIF in CCRC and its biological functions. We stained tumor tissue microarrays comprising sections of 128 CCRC tumors and found MIF to be moderately or highly expressed in >98%. MIF expression was further found to be dramatically elevated in blood plasma of individuals with CCRC compared with healthy controls, suggesting that measurement of MIF levels in the blood may have utility as a diagnostic marker in CCRC. At a functional level, MIF has been reported to engage the CD74 and CD44 receptors and induce signal transduction. In CCRC cell lines, depletion of MIF, CD74 or CD44 by small hairpin RNA led to a significant reduction in growth rate, and clonogenic survival, coinciding with the degree of knockdown. Interruption of the MIF pathway also decreased tumorigenic potential. Biochemically, we found that in CCRC cells MIF signaling leads to activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway and to Src phosphorylation, which is critical for regulation of p27. Together, our studies establish MIF as a protumorigenic signaling molecule that functions in an autocrine fashion to promote renal cell carcinoma and may be useful as a minimally invasive marker of disease status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to assess the radiological presentations of different types of viral pneumonia in children. METHODS Nasopharyngeal swab specimens and bronchial aspirate samples from children with acute respiratory infections were obtained and tested for influenza B, adenovirus, respiratory syncytial virus and parainfluenza (Types 1, 2 and 3) by direct immunofluorescence assay, or for influenza A (Subtype H1N1) by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. The chest radiographs of the 210 confirmed cases of viral pneumonia were analysed retrospectively by two independent radiologists for the identification, characterisation and description of the distribution of imaging abnormalities. The cases were divided into six groups on the basis of confirmed causative viral agent, and radiographic findings were compared, analysed and presented. RESULTS The abnormal chest radiograph findings consisted of bilateral patchy areas of consolidation (n=133), interstitial lung disease (n=33), diffuse areas of air space consolidation (n=29) and lobar consolidation (n=15). The abnormalities were distributed bilaterally in 195 cases and observed more frequently in the lower zones than in other regions. The radiological findings varied significantly among the six groups (p=0.0050). Pairwise comparison showed significant difference between influenza A (H1N1) and adenovirus (p=0.0031) only. CONCLUSION The predominant radiological finding in paediatric viral pneumonia was bilateral patchy areas of consolidation. The radiological findings differed significantly only between adenovirus and influenza A pneumonia. The diagnosis of the specific causative organism requires laboratory confirmation.

Abstract
The MYCN gene has a critical role in determining the clinical behavior of neuroblastoma. Although it is known that genomic amplification occurs in high-risk subsets, it remains unclear how MYCN expression is regulated in the pathogenesis of neuroblastomas. Here, we report that MYCN expression was regulated by the oncoprotein MDM2 at the post-transcriptional level and was associated with neuroblastoma cell growth. Increasing MDM2 by ectopic overexpression in the cytoplasm enhanced both mRNA and protein expression of MYCN. Mechanistic studies found that the C-terminal RING domain of the MDM2 protein bound to the MYCN mRNA's AREs within the 3'UTR and increased MYCN 3'UTR-mediated mRNA stability and translation. Conversely, MDM2 silencing by specific siRNA rendered the MYCN mRNA unstable and reduced the abundance of the MYCN protein in MYCN-amplified neuroblastoma cell lines. Importantly, this MDM2 silencing resulted in a remarkable inhibition of neuroblastoma cell growth and induction of cell death through a p53-independent pathway. Our results indicate that MDM2 has a p53-independent role in the regulation of both MYCN mRNA stabilization and its translation, suggesting that MDM2-mediated MYCN expression is one mechanism associated with growth of MYCN-associated neuroblastoma and disease progression.

Abstract
Objective: Recent observational studies have reported that body fat distribution might be differentially associated with subclinical atherosclerosis. We previously reported that visceral fat area (VFA) ⩾80 cm2 is the optimal cutoff for identifying abdominal obesity in Chinese subjects. We examined whether VFA ⩾80 cm2 reflects the association between abdominal obesity and subclinical atherosclerosis, and if determination of the visceral fat quantity is useful for assessing subclinical atherosclerosis in asymptomatic individuals. Methods and results: Participants (N=1005, men 515, women 490, 34–66 years) free of cardiovascular disease underwent magnetic resonance imaging and carotid ultrasound assessment to quantify VFA and carotid intima–media thickness (C-IMT). Overweight/obese subjects (body mass index (BMI) ⩾25.0 kg m−2) had a higher C-IMT than lean subjects (BMI <25.0 kg m−2) (P<0.01). Subjects with VFA ⩾80 cm2 had significantly higher C-IMT than those without abdominal obesity regardless of BMI (P<0.01). By multivariate regression analysis adjusted for anthropometric measurements and cardiovascular risk factors, waist circumference but not BMI was independently correlated with C-IMT in men (P<0.001). Similar findings were observed with an accurate obesity indices adjusted model, which showed that VFA was an independent risk factor for increased C-IMT in men but not in women. Conclusions: VFA ⩾80 cm2 effectively identified carotid atherosclerosis for both lean and obese individuals in middle-aged Chinese men.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the relationship between ruminal methanogen community and host enteric methane (CH(4) ) production in lactating dairy cows fed diets supplemented with an exogenous fibrolytic enzyme additive. METHODS AND RESULTS Ecology of ruminal methanogens from dairy cows fed with or without exogenous fibrolytic enzymes was examined using PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) analyses and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The density of methanogens was not affected by the enzyme additive or sampling times, and no relationship was observed between the total methanogen population and CH(4) yield (as g per head per day or g kg(-1) DMI). The PCR-DGGE profiles consisted of 26 distinctive bands, with two bands similar to Methanogenic archaeon CH1270 negatively correlated, and one band similar to Methanobrevibacter gottschalkii strain HO positively correlated, with CH(4) yield. Three bands similar to Methanogenic archaeon CH1270 or Methanobrevibacter smithii ATCC 35061 appeared after enzyme was added. CONCLUSIONS Supplementing a dairy cow diet with an exogenous fibrolytic enzyme additive increased CH(4) yield and altered the composition of the rumen methanogen community, but not the overall density of methanogens. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This is the first study to identify the correlation between methanogen ecology and host CH(4) yield from lactating dairy cows.
