Abstract
The effects of acute introduction and withdrawal of trimeprazine (Vallergan), an antihistaminic phenothiazine derivative with known sedative effects, were investigated by a single blind polygraphic study in 8 healthy volunteers. A baseline placebo was given on Nights 1-3, followed either by 10 mg or 20 mg of the drug on Nights 4-6, and then withdrawal effects were recorded on Nights 7-9. The subjective effects of the drug and EEG sleep variables were determined on these nights. The results showed that the drug might have had dose related effects. REM-sleep was increased by 10 mg doses, which also caused an increase in SW sleep. There was no significant change after the 20 mg dose. Significant REM rebound was not observed after withdrawal of either dose. These characteristics may be of value in the treatment of certain aspects of sleep disturbances.

Abstract
Diazepam is a valuable drug in cases of acute myocardial infarction. The 10 mg intravenous loading dose and the subsequent 15 mg oral dose of diazepam administered three times daily produced safe, pleasant sedation, and reduced the need for analgesics. A much reduced excretion of catecholamines was recorded. It is presumed that diazepam causes a lower stress reaction, which is beneficial in diminishing the incidence of malignant arrhythmias and preventing the existing myocardial injury from spreading.

Abstract
A clinical-pharmacological study was performed to determine the effect of acetylsalicylic acid upon the serum concentration of indomethacin. 14 rheumatic patients were given indomethacin orally (25 mg X 4 for 4 days) and concurrently acetylsalicylic acid 3.7 g orally (0.9 g X 3 and 1.0 g X 1 daily), and 21 rheumatic patients were given indomethacin rectally in the morning (100 mg X 1) and concurrently acetylsalicylic acid 3.7 g orally (0.9 g X 3 and 1.0 g X 1 daily). On comparison with treatment with oral or rectal indomethacin alone, it was found that peak serum concentrations of indomethacin were significantly reduced (1% level), the times of the peaks were not shifted, and the areas beneath the serum concentration curves of indomethacin were smaller, but significantly so only if compared with rectal administration. In 12 rheumatic patients given indomethacin by rectum in the evening (100 mg X 1) and concurrently acetylsalicylic acid 3.7 g (0.9 g X 3 and 1.0 g X 1 daily), the serum level of indomethacin on the following morning (after 11 h) did not differ from that found after rectal treatment. A statistically but not biologically significant difference was observed between the mean serum half-lives of indomethacin given orally and rectally. For unknown reasons, concurrent doses of acetylsalicylic acid and indomethacin made the mean serum half-life of indomethacin longer than after its oral administration, but shorter than when the same dose of indomethacin was given rectally. There was no difference between serum levels of salicylate after oral administration of acetylsalicylic acid alone or after a concurrent oral or rectal dose of indomethacin. The results have been related to those reported previously, with respect to the interaction between indomethacin and acetylsalicylic acid, the serum levels of indomethacin after oral and rectal dosing, and the serum half-life of indomethacin based upon a one- or two-compartment model. The clinical relevance of the study is discussed.

Abstract
Furosemide (Impugan) 12.5, 25 or 40 mg twice daily, has been compared as an antihypertensive with hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg twice daily and a placebo. A double blind, cross-over design was used with a run-in period of 4 weeks, preceding five 4-week periods of treatment with these compounds alone. There were 34 patients in the trial, 17 men and 17 women. Paired comparison showed that furosemide 25 or 40 mg twice daily and hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg twice daily had a similar hypotensive effect, irrespective of the initial blood pressure. Furosemide 40 mg twice daily and hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg twice daily caused a slight fall of blood pressure as compared with placebo (0.10 greater than p greater than 0.05, p less than 0.05). There was a distinct correlation between blood pressure and age. Serum K+ fell significantly during treatment, particularly with hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg twice daily, as well as with furosemide 25 or 40 mg twice daily. As compared with placebo, urinary output increased significantly after furosemide 12.5, 25 or 40 mg twice daily, but it rose only to a non-significant extent after hydrochlorothiazide. The fall of blood pressure and decrease in serum K+ were linearly related. There were only a few, mild side effects which did not necessitate discontinuation of the trial.

Abstract
1. The effects of ion substitution and various inhibitors on the transmucosal potential, short circuit current, mucosal resistance and acid secretion of the lizard gastric mucosa, incubated in an Ussing chamber, have been determined. 2. Ion substitution experiments indicate that the serosal potential step consists of a combined C1- and K+ diffusion potential, and that the mucosal potential step is Na+ dependent and behaves primarily as a Na+ diffusion potential. 3. Experiments with ouabain indicate that the major (Na+, K+)-ATPase activity responsible for maintenance of cation gradients is located on the serosal side of the mucosal cells, and that this pump activity is non-electrogenic. 4. Experiments with amiloride indicate that a passive sodium influx on the mucosal side is essential for the maintenance of the transmucosal potential and short circuit current. 5. Acid secretion requires the presence of sodium and chloride on the serosal side and the maintenance of a high intracellular potassium level through the (Na+, K+)-ATPase system. 6. The effects of acetazolamide and thiocyanate are compatible with an involvement of carbonic anhydrase and anion-dependent ATPase in acid secretion. 7. Upon initiation of acid secretion the serosal membrane permeability for chloride increases and that for potassium decreases.

Abstract
The syn and anti conformers of N-nitrosoproline, N-nitrososarcosine and N-nitroso-2-(ethylamino)-ethanol, have been separated by liquid chromatography. These conformers result from hindered rotation about the N-N bond. Separation was achieved using adsorption, reversed-phase, and ion-exchange modes. For the nitroso-amino acids, a shift in the equilibrium conformer concentration was observed with changes in pH.

Abstract
A group of 7 healthy male subjects was studied in regard to sleep stages and 24 h plasma cortisol and growth hormone patterns during the 4 seasons of the year in an Arctic environment (Tromsø, Norway). No difference in total sleep or sleep stage per cents was found for any of the yearly seasons. A small but statistical significant increase in mean plasma cortisol concentration and amount secreted for 24 h was found for the autumn-winter seasons, as compared with the spring and summer. However, no difference in the circadian curve of cortisol hormonal pattern was found. All subjects secreted growth hormone shortly after sleep onset at night and no difference was found as a function of season of the year.
