Abstract
We report a case of hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome (HIE) complicated by neutrophil deficiency which was successfully treated with oral administration of disodium cromoglycate. A 48-year-old Japanese man with HIE developed Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis. Laboratory tests after the meningitis revealed persistent neutropenia (300-800/mm3) and defects of phagocytosis and bacterial killing by neutrophils. Administration of disodium cromoglycate was started, and neutrophil counts gradually increased to 1200-1600/mm3. The impaired neutrophil activities returned to normal. The patient improved clinically; during the 2-year treatment, he had only two brief episodes of the common cold. Disodium cromoglycate may have potential clinical use in the treatment of cases of HIE even with neutrophil deficiency.

Abstract
A 41-year-old man, who had undergone descending aortic repair following rupture of the DeBakey type III aortic dissection, underwent thoracoabdominal aneurysm repair 1 year after the first surgery. The operation was performed by partial-clamping and single crossclamping without using assisted bypass or shunt, in order to minimize bleeding ensuing the re-thoracotomy and dissection between lung and the graft.

Abstract
Oxygen free radicals contribute to various kinds of tissue injury processes within the central nervous system. It has been suggested that inhibition of free radical formation has the potential to attenuate secondary neural tissue damage involving ischemia or trauma, and antioxidant therapy may offer a promising approach. In the present study, employing a cortical contusion model in the rat, contusion-induced neural damage, was evaluated by investigating edema formation, behavioral activities and histological changes. The effects of the superoxide radical scavenger, OPC-14117, were also tested to determine how free radicals may contribute to such neural damage. The results demonstrated that cerebral contusion induces a progressive decrease in tissue specific gravity representing edema formation, and behavioral deficits in the Morris water maze test and habituation of exploratory activity. Histological examinations revealed necrotic cavity formation in the cortex and selective neuronal death of the hippocampal CA3 region. These changes were significantly attenuated by OPC-14117, which was administered as a single dose immediately following trauma induction. The above results indicate that oxygen free radicals are involved in contusion-induced edema formation, subsequent tissue damage and cognitive deficits. The superoxide radical scavenger, OPC-14117, has a powerful therapeutic potential for preventing secondary cell damage following traumatic brain injury.

Abstract
The non-hemorrhagic mass effect of cerebral contusions is commonly attributed to vasogenic edema and/or cytotoxic edema (cellular swelling). We propose that a marked increase in osmolality within the contusion necrosis proper, in which the cellular elements uniformly undergo shrinkage, disintegration and homogenation, represents an important and unique mechanism underlying the contusion edema. The present study demonstrates in a rat model of cerebral contusion, that 1) the osmolality of the contused brain tissue increases rapidly, 2) the increase in osmolality is not caused by changes in inorganic ion contents, suggesting a metabolic production of osmoles or release of idiogenic osmoles, and 3) the contused brain tissue strongly attracts water, provided that blood supply is maintained. We suggest that the primary driving force of water accumulation into contused brain tissue is the elevated colloid osmotic potential of contusion necrosis.

Abstract
Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rDNA sequences and genomic DNA-DNA relatedness showed that the sulphur-oxidizing facultative chemolithotroph Thiobacillus acidophilus was closely related to members of the genus Acidiphilium, which is a group of strictly aerobic, heterotrophic acidophiles now categorized into aerobic photosynthetic bacteria. Lipophilic pigment analyses revealed that zinc-chelated bacteriochlorophyll a and carotenoids occurred in appreciable amounts in T. acidophilus and all established species of the genus Acidiphilium. PCR experiments showed that T. acidophilus as well as Acidiphilium species contained puf genes, encoding the photosynthetic reaction centre proteins and the core light-harvesting complex of the purple bacteria. There were high similarities between T. acidophilus and Acidiphilium species in the primary structure of their reaction centre proteins deduced from the nucleotide sequence data. The phylogenetic tree of the reaction centre proteins was in agreement with the 16S rDNA sequence-based phylogenetic tree in the relationship between T. acidophilus and Acidiphilium species and between the Acidiphilium cluster and other purple photosynthetic bacteria. Based on these results, together with previous phylogenetic and phenotypic information, it is proposed to reclassify T. acidophilus (Guay and Silver) Harrison 1983 as Acidiphilium acidophilum comb. nov. The type strain is ATCC 27807T (= DSM 700T).

Abstract
OBJECT The goal of this study was to identify the neurological characteristics of patients with poststroke pain who show a favorable response to motor cortex (MC) stimulation used to control their pain. METHODS The neurological characteristics of 31 patients treated by MC stimulation were analyzed. In 15 patients (48%), excellent or good pain control (pain reduction > 60%) was achieved for follow-up periods of more than 2 years by using MC stimulation at intensities below the threshold for muscle contraction. Satisfactory pain control was achieved in 13 (73%) of 18 patients in whom motor weakness in the painful area was virtually absent or mild, but in only two (15%) of the 13 patients who demonstrated moderate or severe weakness in the painful area (p < 0.01). Muscle contraction was inducible in the painful area in 20 patients when stimulated at a higher intensity. No such muscle response was inducible in the remaining 11 patients, no matter how extensively the authors attempted to determine appropriate stimulation sites. Satisfactory pain control was achieved in 14 (70%) of the 20 patients in whom muscle contraction was inducible, but in only one (9%) of the 11 patients in whom muscle contraction was not inducible (p < 0.01). No significant relationship was observed between pain control and various sensory symptoms, including the presence of hypesthesia, spontaneous dysesthesia, hyperpathia, and allodynia, or the disappearance of the N20 component of the median nerve-evoked somatosensory scalp potential. No significant relationship existed between the effect of MC stimulation on the pain and stimulation-induced phenomena, including paresthesia, improvement in motor performance, and attenuation of involuntary movements. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that the pain control afforded by MC stimulation requires neuronal circuits that are maintained by the presence of intact corticospinal tract neurons originating from the MC. Preoperative evaluation of motor weakness of the painful area appears to be useful for predicting a favorable response to MC stimulation in the control of poststroke pain.

Abstract
In order to elucidate the mechanisms of release of EAAs and their excitotoxicity in cerebral contusion, cortical contusion was produced in the rat parietal cortex, and the changes in extracellular levels of EAAs in the central and peripheral areas of contusion were investigated using microdialysis. The cortical contusion induced a rapid increase in dialysate concentration of glutamate ([Glu]d) from a baseline level of 4.6+/-2.8 microM to a maximum level of 36.3+/-12.8 microM. This elevation of glutamate was significantly attenuated by mild hypothermia (32 degrees C for 90 min, comprising 20 min before and 70 min after the injury induction) in the peripheral area of contusion (p < 0.01) but not in the central area. Histological evaluations revealed that the hypothermia reduced the necrosis volume of contusion to 38.3% of that in the normothermic control (p < 0.01). In situ administration of Co2+, an inhibitor of Co2+-dependent exocytotic release of EAAs from the nerve terminals, via the microdialysis system, also attenuated the [Glu]d elevation following cortical contusion, in the peripheral area of contusion (p < 0.01) but not in the central area. These findings indicate that cerebral contusion involves heterogeneous and complex mechanisms of EAA release into the extracellular space. The release of EAAs in the contusion core was nonsensitive to hypothermia and Co2+ administration, suggesting that such EAA release was related to primary disruption of the cell membrane or vascular wall by the physical force of the head trauma, resulting in leakage of EAAs from the metabolic pool in the cytosole or blood stream. In contrast, in the peripheral area, the effectiveness of hypothermia and Co2+ administration implied a presynaptic mechanism of EAA release, which consisted, at least in part, of Ca2+-dependent exocytotic EAA release from depolarized nerve terminals. The EAAs released in the contusion core may diffuse towards a peripheral direction and act on the postsynaptic receptors, causing neuronal depolarization. Such a diffusion-reaction process appears to induce additional release of EAAs from the depolarized nerve terminals. Hypothermia may block this diffusion-reaction process and eventually reduce the contusion volume.

Abstract
A 60-year-old man, who had undergone open mitral commissurotomy 6 years ago, underwent re-do surgery (mitral valve replacement) with minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS), using lower partial sternotomy to the height of the right side second intercostal space. Cannulation of the heart was carried out placing a cannula directly into the superior vena cava and a second cannula in the inferior vena cava via the right atrium. Arterial return was through the ascending aorta. Cardioplegia was administered directly into the ascending aorta with intermittent perfusion. Valve replacement was performed by opening directly right side left atrium.

Abstract
We have previously shown that an exogenous type I collagen matrix can regulate expression of mRNA for parathyroid hormone (PTH)-related protein (PTHrP) and its receptor, the PTH/PTHrP receptor, in the UMR106-06 osteogenic sarcoma cell line, which is considered to be representative of a relatively mature osteoblast phenotype. Consistent with those data, we show here that growth of UMR106-06 cells on type I collagen increased PTH/PTHrP receptor-binding capacity. Analysis of the binding data showed that the number of PTH/PTHrP receptors expressed by cells cultured on collagen was at least 2-fold greater than that of cells cultured on plastic. Expression of mRNA encoding alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and osteopontin (OP) was also upregulated in cells cultured on collagen, suggesting that interaction with collagen promotes the osteoblast phenotype in this cell line. Retinoic acid (RA), which has also been shown to promote osteoblastic differentiation, synergized with type I collagen to cause super-induction of OP mRNA. In contrast, RA abolished the collagen-induced increase in ALP mRNA and PTH/PTHrP receptor mRNA. The collagen-mediated increase in the expression of OP and PTH/PTHrP receptor mRNA, but not that of ALP, was perturbed by prior covalent modification of the collagen by non-enzymatic glycation. The collagen effects did not occur via interaction with RGD amino acid domains in type I collagen, but evidence was obtained for involvement of the DGEA amino acid cell-binding domain. The mechanism by which plating of UMR106-06 cells on a type I collagen substrate affects PTH/PTHrP receptor mRNA levels was investigated. Inhibition of cytoskeletal organization using cytochalasin D, and inhibitors of protein phosphatases, protein kinase C, phospholipase C and cyclooxygenase, did not abrogate the collagen-mediated effects. In contrast, treatment of cells with the protein tyrosine kinase inhibitor genistein, but not herbimycin A, dose-dependently abolished the collagen effects on the expression of PTH/PTHrP receptor, ALP and OP mRNA. These results show that a type I collagen substrate influences the expression of osteoblast-associated genes in a cell model of mature osteoblasts and suggests that this involves, at least in part, changes in intracellular tyrosine phosphorylation.

Abstract
The characteristics of phenotypic expression were studied in a Japanese family with hereditary spherocytosis and an extremely rare homozygous missense mutation of the band 3 gene (band 3 Fukuoka: G130R). The homozygous unsplenectomized proband was a 29-year-old male with compensated haemolytic anaemia (red cell count 4.21 x 10(12)/l, reticulocytes 278 x 10(9)/l, and indirect bilirubin 44 micromol/l). His red cell band 3 (B3) protein demonstrated a 9.3% reduction and his protein 4.2 (P4.2) level was substantially reduced (45.0%), compared to normal subjects. P4.2 protein was composed mostly of a wild type (72 kD) with a trace of 68 kD peptide. The binding properties of the mutated B3 to normal P4.2 were significantly impaired, which probably resulted in the substantial reduction of P4.2 in this proband, since no abnormalities were detected on the P4.2 gene. Electron microscopy (EM) using the freeze-fracture method demonstrated a mild decrease in intramembrane particles (IMPs) of near-normal size (8 nm in diameter) with no substantial increases in their oligomerization. Their distribution on the membrane P face was almost normal, although most of the IMPs could represent the homozygously mutated B3 protein. EM (quick-freeze deep-etching method) disclosed a skeletal network of near-normal size and size distribution of the skeletal units, suggesting that the mutated B3 protein itself did not have much effect on the skeletal network in situ. Therefore the reduced P4.2 content (45% of that of normal subjects), which remained on the red cell membrane of this proband, appeared to be nearly sufficient for maintaining the normal structure of the skeletal network and IMPs in situ, contrary to the marked abnormalities in both IMPs and the skeletal network in complete P4.2 deficiencies.

Abstract
The effects of deep brain or epidural cortical stimulation on poststroke involuntary and voluntary movement disorders were analyzed in a total of 64 patients. Among them, 22 patients underwent either deep brain or epidural cortical stimulation in order to control their poststroke involuntary movements. The remaining 42 underwent epidural cortical stimulation for the purpose of controlling their poststroke pain. In the latter group of patients, we analyzed the changes in coexistent involuntary or voluntary movement disorders during stimulation for pain control. Stimulation of either the thalamic nucleus ventralis intermedius or the motor cortex proved to be useful in 13 (59%) of the patients who underwent deep brain or epidural cortical stimulation for control of poststroke involuntary movements. Satisfactory control was often achieved in patients with hemiballismus, hemichorea or resting tremor. In 8 (19%) of the patients who underwent epidural cortical stimulation for pain control, stimulation of the motor cortex improved motor performance which had been impaired in association with hemiparesis. Such an effect was independent of pain control and apparently resulted from an inhibition of their rigidity. We believe that these findings justify further clinical studies on deep brain or epidural cortical stimulation for the control of poststroke movement disorders.

Abstract
In a Xenopus oocyte heterologous expression system, we characterized the electrophysiology of 3 novel missense mutations of HERG identified in Japanese LQT2 families: T474I (within the S2-S3 linker), A614V, and V630L (in the outer mouth of pore-forming region). For each of the 3 mutations, injection of mutant cRNA alone did not express detectable currents. Coinjection of wild-type (WT) along with each mutant cRNA (T474I/WT, A614V/WT, and V630L/WT) suppressed HERG current in a dominant-negative manner, and the order of magnitude of current suppression was V630L/WT>A614V/WT>T474I/WT. In addition to decreases in slope conductance for all 3 mutants, the voltage dependence of steady-state inactivation was shifted to negative potentials for V630L/WT and A614V/WT. Consequently, channel availability at positive potentials was diminished, and inward rectification was enhanced for these 2 mutants. Thus, missense mutations of HERG caused dominant-negative suppression through multiple mechanisms. The shift in voltage dependence of HERG inactivation and the resulting enhanced inward rectification in A614V/WT and V630L/WT provide a novel mechanism for suppression of the HERG current carrying outward current during the repolarization phase of the action potential.

Abstract
It is reported that Chinese hamster ovary cells transfected with human alpha4 cDNA (alpha4CHOs) and expressing functional alpha4beta1 integrin developed bone metasasis in nude mice. To clarify the role of alpha4beta1 integrin in bone metastasis, in terms of tumor-mediated bone destruction, we examined whether alpha4CHOs stimulate osteoclast formation in cocultures with mouse bone marrow cells. The number of osteoclast-like cells identified as tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase positive multinucleated cells (TRAP(+) MNCs) formed from bone marrow cells increased with the increasing number of alpha4CHOs cocultured. The effects of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) on TRAP(+) MNC formation were enhanced in cocultures with alpha4CHOs. TRAP(+) MNCs induced by alpha4CHOs possessed calcitonin receptors and resorbed calcified tissues. In cocultures, alpha4CHOs and bone marrow stromal cells were in contact with each other and bone marrow stromal cells expressed vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), which is one of the ligands for alpha4beta1 integrin. TRAP(+) MNC formation was not stimulated in cocultures where direct contact between alpha4CHOs and bone marrow cells was inhibited by membrane filters. Alpha4CHOs do not support TRAP(+) MNC formation in cocultures with spleen cells but do support TRAP(+) mononuclear cell and MNC formation from spleen cells in the presence of osteoblastic cells. Cultured media from alpha4CHOs, bone marrow cells, and cocultures of alpha4CHOs and bone marrow cells did not stimulate TRAP(+) MNC formation or enhance the effects of 1,25(OH)2D3 and PGE2 in bone marrow cultures. The concentrations of PGE2 and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in cultured media were not different between the cultures of bone marrow cells and the cocultures of bone marrow cells and alpha4CHOs. Anti-human alpha4 and anti-mouse VCAM-1 antibodies inhibited TRAP(+) MNC formation induced by alpha4CHOs. These results indicate that alpha4CHOs stimulated TRAP(+) MNC formation through direct cell-to-cell interaction between alpha4beta1 and VCAM-1. It is suggested that in addition to various soluble factors regulating osteoclast formation, cell-to-cell interaction between tumor cells and bone marrow cells is important for inducing osteoclasts at the site of bone metastasis and leading to bone destruction.

Abstract
Three-dimensional anisotropy contrast (3DAC) magnetic resonance imaging is a new algorithm for the treatment of apparent diffusion tensor using the three primary colors. To determine if 3DAC has a clinical application for human brain, six normal volunteers and twenty patients with supratentorial cerebrovascular accidents were examined using clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and the changes in the 3DAC images associated with Wallerian degeneration of the pyramidal tract were evaluated. The 3DAC images exhibited impressive anatomical resolution. In all chronic stage patients with hemiparesis, the colors in the pyramidal tract were faded. Patients examined during the acute stage who later recovered from hemiparesis had no visible changes of the 3DAC image, whereas patients who recovered poorly showed distinct color fading in the pyramidal tract within 14 days following stroke. In conclusion, very fine anatomical structures are visible on 3DAC images, and it can be used as a diagnostic tool for the human brain.

Abstract
We report a case of successful endopyelotomy using the Acucise cutting balloon device for secondary ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO). A 23-year-old man was hospitalized with the chief complaint of left lumbago and left hydronephrosis due to left UPJO. He underwent antegrade endopyelotomy with a nephroscope and open pyeloplasty. However, left lumbago and hydronephrosis did not show improvement. Acucise endopyelotomy was performed under epidural anesthesia. The operative time was 55 minutes and the hospital stay after the operation was 4 days. There were no operative complications and 3 months later, the operative results were satisfactory as determined by drip infusion pyelography and the disappearance of the lumbago.

Abstract
Ex vivo expansion systems of hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC) have been extensively studied and their clinical application is under investigation. However, it is not known whether HPC expanded ex vivo will be able to retain their replating potential. CD34+ cells isolated from cord blood were cultured in Iscove's modified Dulbecco's medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum, 1.0% bovine serum albumin, 50 ng/ml stem cell factor, 50 ng/ml interleukin-3 (IL-3), 50 ng/ml IL-6, 100 ng/ml granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, and 3 U/ml erythropoietin for 0, 5, 7, 10, 14, and 21 days. After the expansion cultures, granulocyte/macrophage progenitor cells (CFU-GM) were assayed from each culture by the standard methylcellulose method. After 14 days of culture, CFU-GM-derived colonies were randomly picked up and processed for the replating assay. The fold increase of CFU-GM peaked at day 7 of the expansion culture (29.8 +/- 7.7-fold, n = 5), followed by a decline until day 21. In the replating assay of CFU-GM from freshly isolated CD34+ cells, the mean replating efficiency was 91.2 +/- 4.7%. The replating efficiency decreased gradually with the time of the expansion culture. At day 7 when the fold increase of CFU-GM reached its peak, the replating efficiency had dropped to 47.5 +/- 2.3%, followed by a further decline to 5.3 +/- 3.4% at day 21. Furthermore, the addition of 100 ng/ml thrombopoietin to this expansion system failed to prevent the decline of replating efficiency. These observations suggest that the replating potential of CFU-GM may decrease in the ex vivo expansion system, even when their fold increase reaches its peak. This should be taken into consideration when HPC expanded ex vivo are used in clinical transplantation.

Abstract
Immunocytological localization of omega-agatoxin IVA (omega-aga IVA)-sensitive Ca2+ channels involved in glutamate release from growth cones of cultured rat dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons was studied with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The omega-aga IVA-sensitive Ca2+ channels were visualized by labeling with immuno-gold particles (30 nm). FE-SEM and TEM images showed that immuno-gold particles were present in the area of growth cones as well as somata, and generally absent on neurite stem and fibroblasts. TEM images of vertical ultra-thin sections showed that the immuno-gold particles were present on the surface of the plasma membrane. Since the gold particles indicate the immunological presence of omega-aga IVA-sensitive Ca2+ channels, the Ca2+ channels involved in transmitter release are present on growth cones before making synapse formation.

Abstract
By using reverse transcription and PCR for NS3 and 5'-untranslated regions (5'UTR) of the viral genome, prevalence of GB virus C/hepatitis G virus (GBV-C/HGV) infection in Chiang Mai, Thailand, was studied. High prevalence of GBV-C/HGV infection was observed among intravenous drug users (32%) and hemodialyzed patients (25%). The prevalence was also considerably high among patients with chronic liver disease, such as chronic hepatitis (9%), liver cirrhosis (12%) and hepatocellular carcinoma (10%). On the other hand, the prevalence among healthy blood donors (1%) was significantly lower than that of the above high-risk groups. GBV-C/HGV RNA positivity was significantly higher in individuals with antibodies against hepatitis C virus (24%) than in those without (5%). Phylogenetic analysis of the 5'UTR sequences classified Thai GBV-C/HGV isolates into three groups; (i) a group of isolates that are commonly found in the United States and Europe, (ii) a group of isolates that are commonly found in Asia, and (iii) a group of novel sequence variants.

Abstract
Since 1991 ten patients, 9 male and 1 female, with aortic arch aneurysm underwent surgical therapy with trapdoor thoracotomy. The mean age was 67.4 +/- 9.1 (standard deviation) years at operation. In addition to the aortic arch repair, we also performed seven descending aortic replacements. We performed one partial arch replacement, one total arch replacement, and one aneurysmorrhaphy and wrapping of the aortic arch aneurysm. We experienced 1 case of paraplegia, no hospital death, and no long-term mortality.

Abstract
PURPOSE There is no effective therapy against hormone refractory prostate cancer. This led us to evaluate the effectiveness and toxicity of cis-platinum (CDDP) and ifosfamide (IFM) combination chemotherapy in the patients with hormone-unresponsive carcinoma of the prostate. METHODS Patients with hormone-unresponsive prostate cancer were scheduled to receive CDDP 70 mg/m2 intravenously on day 1 and IFM 1.2 g/m2/day intravenously on day 1 through day 5 of 28-day cycle. RESULTS Twenty seven patients with hormone unresponsive prostate cancer were enrolled onto this trial. Of these patients, seven (26%) demonstrated a partial objective response (PR), and ten (37%) a stable disease (ST). The response duration of PR cases lasted from 6 to 49 months with a median of 16 months and the response duration of PR + ST cases lasted from 3 to 36 months with a median of 10 months. Subjective improvement was obtained in 11 patients (41%). Survival duration of all cases were 4 to 89 months with a median of 23 months and probabilities of survival at 3 years and 5 years were 36% and 24%, respectively. The toxicity of this treatment was mostly mild to moderate, anemia (96%), leukocytopenia (89%), anorexia (81%), alopecia (67%), thrombocytopenia (44%), hematuria (38%), renal dysfunction (19%) and liver dysfunction (7%) were noticed. Severe toxicity was observed in two cases, one acute renal failure and one endotoxin shock. CONCLUSION We conclude that CDDP and IFM combination chemotherapy was active regimen for hormone unresponsive prostate cancer.

Abstract
Osteopontin (OP) is a highly phosphorylated bone matrix protein and contains the RGD cell-binding motif, which mediates cell adhesion through integrin receptors that include alpha(v)beta3. Casein kinase 2 (CK2) is a factor-independent serine/threonine kinase, which may be the predominant physiologically relevant kinase for OP phosphorylation. This study was designed to examine the effects of unphosphorylated recombinant rat OP, and CK2-phosphorylated OP (P-OP), on the adhesion and function of mouse osteoclasts (OC) and osteoblast-like cells (UMR 201-10B and UMR 106-06) in vitro. OP significantly increased OC adhesion compared to plastic alone, and cell attachment was further increased at least twofold on OP phosphorylated with CK2. Attachment was dependent on the integrity of the RGD domain and was completely abolished in the presence of 1 mM RGD peptide. Neither CK2 phosphorylation of mutant OP, in which the RGD was converted to RGE or RAD, nor protein kinase C (PKC) phosphorylation of wild-type OP enhanced OC attachment. An antibody to the beta3 integrin subunit, but not anti-mouse CD44 antibody, specifically blocked the proportion of attachment due to phosphorylation of OP. Actin ring formation in OC was increased by plating cells onto OP, with no further increase by phosphorylation. Both OP and CK2-phosphorylated OP enhanced attachment of the two osteoblastic cell lines, compared to plastic, but in contrast to OCs, there was no significant difference with phosphorylation. Osteoblast attachment was totally blocked by 1 mM RGD peptide, but was not influenced by the beta3 integrin antibody. Plating of UMR 201-10B cells onto OP further increased retinoic acid-induced alkaline phosphatase expression. The results suggest that specific phosphorylation of OP is important for interaction with OCs, compared with osteoblastic cells, and that alternative integrins may be important in the interaction between osteoblastic cells and OP compared with OCs.
