Purification and properties of suppressor seryl-tRNA: ATP phosphotransferase from bovine liver

Seryl-tRNASerCmCA: ATP phosphotransferase was purified 1200-fold from bovine liver by ultracentrifugation at 150 000 X g, chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, fractional precipitation with ammonium sulfate, chromatography on hydroxyapatite, gel filtration on Sephacryl S-300 and affinity chromatography on Blue Sepharose. Molecular mass was estimated as 135-145 kDa. The Km values for ATP and ser-tRNASerCmCA were 2 mM and 21 nM, respectively. This enzyme did not react with ser-tRNASerIGA, tyr-tRNA or thr-tRNA.

Chronic dissecting aorta aneurysm: a medical or surgical disease?

The surgical results obtained in 40 cases of chronic dissecting aorta aneurysm are reported and compared with the results obtained in medically treated cases. Improved results with improved surgical techniques are described and the superiority of surgical treatment as opposed to medical treatment is stressed. Although mortality is decreasing, it is still very high and many surgical problems remain unsolved.

Afferent connections of medial precentral cortex in the rat

The principal sources of input to rat medial precentral cortex (PCm), as revealed by iontophoretically applied horseradish peroxidase, are: the ventral lateral, mediodorsal, central lateral and ventromedial thalamic nuclei; contralateral PCm; ipsilateral cortical areas related to vision, somatic sensation and audition; retrosplenial and ventrolateral orbital cortex. These results are compared to findings in monkeys and discussed in relation to the phenomenon of polymodal neglect of hemispace.

Unique behavioral change with cinepazide in parkinsonism. A case report

A 56-year-old male parkinsonian patient developed a unique behavioral change following the oral administration of cinepazide, a cerebral vasodilator. This behavior consisted of an apparent infatuation with a ward nurse, which ceased after medication was discontinued.

Studies on concurrent alpha- and beta-adrenoceptor blocking action of S-596 (arotinolol)

The effects of a therapeutic dose of oral S-596 upon the cardiovascular response to intravenous isoproterenol and noradrenaline were studied in 2 hypertensive and 4 normotensive subjects in order to evaluate the drug's mode of action. After oral administration of S-596, mean blood pressure rose slightly and the heart rate decreased. In addition, cardiac output decreased considerably and total peripheral resistance increased. However pulmonary arterial end-diastolic pressure and right atrial pressure were not affected by S-596 administration. Before S-596, intravenous isoproterenol increased both heart rate and pulse pressure in a dose-dependent manner. Similarly, intravenous noradrenaline increased both systolic and diastolic pressures. Following 15 mg of S-596, the effects of isoproterenol were antagonized such that the cumulative log-dose-response curves of the mean isoproterenol-induced increases in heart rate and reductions in diastolic pressure were shifted in parallel to the right. At the same time, the mean noradrenaline-induced increases in blood pressure were also antagonized in a competitive manner. The mean ratio of alpha- and beta-components was calculated as: (formula: see text) From this result it can be suggested that the alpha-adrenoceptor blockade potency of this drug is approximately one-eight of its beta-adrenoceptor blockade potency.

Surgical management of bleeding aortopulmonary fistula and removal of an infected graft

An anastomotic pseudoaneurysm after congenital coarctation repair performed thirteen years ago, combined with an actively bleeding aortopulmonary fistula and an infected artificial graft, were successfully managed by employing an ascending aorta-infrarenal abdominal aortic bypass, and removal of an infected graft of the descending thoracic aorta.

[Fundamental and clinical studies on T-1982 (cefbuperazone) in the field of obstetrics and gynecology]

Fundamental and clinical studies on T-1982 (cefbuperazone), a new cephamycin antibiotic, were carried out in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, and the following results were obtained. In a fundamental study, T-1982 was given to 7 patients with postpanhysterectomy at a dose of 1 g by intravenous drip infusion, and T-1982 concentrations in uterine artery and elbow vein serum and each uterine tissue (fallopian tube, ovary, endometrium, corpus uteri, cervix uteri and portio) were serially determined. The concentration in the endometrium (though the range of values was wide) was found higher than that in the other tissues. In a clinical study, T-1982 was given to 5 patients; 2 patients with parametritis and each one patient with right salpingitis, pyometra and metroendometritis. The efficacy rate was 80%. No side effects nor remarkable abnormalities in hematology, urinalysis and renal and hepatic function were observed during the therapy.

Experimental transplacental transmission of canine herpesvirus in pregnant bitches during the second trimester of gestation

The effects of canine herpesvirus (CHV) on fetuses were studied after IV inoculation of pregnant bitches in the 2nd trimester of gestation. Cesarean sections were performed on 2 bitches that were inoculated with CHV on the estimated 30th day of gestation. Bitch M-1 had 2 mummified fetuses and bitch M-2 had 4 mummified and 2 dead fetuses and 3 live-born pups. Infection by CHV was confirmed histopathologically by the presence of focal areas of necrosis associated with intranuclear inclusion bodies in heart muscle sections of 1 dead fetus; CHV was not recovered from other organs. Abortion occurred between the 2nd and 3rd week after inoculation of another pregnant bitch inoculated with CHV on the estimated 30th day of gestation. Two bitches inoculated with CHV on the estimated 40th day of gestation gave birth prematurely to 10 pups. The detection of characteristic herpesviral lesions in various organs and the reisolation of CHV from the liver, spleen, kidneys, and lungs of premature pups indicated CHV infection. Transplacental infection of fetal pups by CHV resulted in their death and subsequent mummification. It appears that abortion and premature birth also may occur in pregnant bitches infected during the 2nd trimester of gestation.
