Recurrent ulcer after vagotomy and pyloroplasty: the x-ray appearances and their value in diagnosis

Barium meal studies have shown evidence of a recurrent ulcer or of stenosis in 12 out of 24 patients with recurrent dyspepsia after vagotomy and pyloroplasty. These 12 patients have been subsequently proved to have had recurrences and all but one are now cured by further surgery. Barium meals in 12 patients show no evidence of recurrence or stenosis, and follow-up clinical studies suggest that they do not have recurrent ulcer. Radiological studies appear to have great value in the interpretation of recurrent dyspeptic symptoms after vagotomy and pyloroplasty.

Radiological anatomy after pyloroplasty

The radiological anatomy of the pyloro-duodenal area after pyloroplasty is described. The deformity produced by pyloroplasty is shown in the patient with a normal pylorus and duodenum and in the patient with a duodenal ulcer and stenosis. From a study of 24 asymptomatic patients after pyloroplasty it is possible to recognize the radiological features that indicate a successful operation.

A Green’s Function for the Stress-Intensity Factors of Edge Cracks and Its Application to Thermal Stresses

A Green’s function for the computation of stress-intensity factors for edge cracks in rectangular plates is given for any distribution of stress in the uncracked plate which is tensile over the crack length. The function is used to compute stress intensity factors for transient thermal stresses produced by sudden cooling of one edge. Experimentally measured stresses and stress-intensity factors are given and shown to be in good agreement with the predicted values.

Neurological disease after partial gastrectomy

Clinical and laboratory signs of neurological disease were found in 14 patients many years after partial gastrectomy. Vitamin B(12) deficiency occurred in most patients, but only those three who had signs of subacute combined degeneration of the cord and no osteomalacia responded well to treatment.

Water, sodium, potassium, and chloride content of skeletal muscle in fit and ill subjucts

Biopsies of deltoid, gastrocnemius, or rectus abdominis taken under general anaesthesia from each of 15 subjects have been analysed for fat, water, sodium, potassium, and chloride. Some 110 samples were analysed for each muscle, and all the estimations were made on each sample. Standards have been constructed for the normal composition of these three muscles, and their reliability is discussed. Data from subjects with peptic ulcer, hyponatraemia, and sustained weight loss must be excluded from standards. It seems likely that standards could be improved by taking age and sex into account.
