Abstract
To better understand the molecular mechanisms of prostate cancer (PCA) dissemination and to develop new anti-metastasis therapies, key regulatory molecules involved in PCA metastasis were identified in two human androgen-independent PCA cell lines, highly metastatic 1E8-H and lowly metastatic 2B4-L cells. Through 2-DE and MS analyses, 12 proteins with different expression levels in the two cell lines were identified. The following proteins were found to be significantly up-regulated in 1E8-H cells compared with 2B4-L cells: gp96 precursor, calreticulin precursor, vimentin (VIM), Hsp90alpha, peroxiredoxin 2, HNRPH1, ezrin, T-complex protein 1, alpha subunit, and hypothetical protein mln2339. In contrast, heart L-lactate dehydrogenase H chain, annexin I, and protein disulfide isomerase were notably down-regulated in 1E8-H cells compared with 2B4-L cells. To our knowledge, this study is the first to demonstrate that up-regulation of VIM expression positively correlates with the invasion and metastasis of androgen-independent PCA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the change of neurobehavioral functions of workers with long term exposure to vanadium. METHODS A total of 106 workers with exposure to vanadium were paired with workers without exposure to vanadium. The WHO-NCTB was employed to assess the neurobehavioral functions. RESULTS The exposure group had lower scores in the domains measuring positive moods and higher scores in the domains measuring negative moods. The exposure group had poorer performance in Santa Ana dexterity, Benton visual retention and pursuit aiming II than the control group. CONCLUSION Exposure to vanadium can adversely affect neurobehavioral functions of workers. Workers exposed to vanadium may show mood disorders, decreased vision-memory, and declined motor speed and accuracy.

Abstract
Homeobox genes encode transcription factors which function in body axis patterning in the developing embryo. Recent evidence suggests that the maintenance of specific HOX expression patterns is necessary for regulating the homeostasis of adult tissues as well. In this study, HOXB7 transformed human mammary epithelial cells, MCF10A, to grow in minimally supplemented medium, to form colonies in Matrigel, and display resistance to ionizing radiation. Searching for protein partners of HOXB7 that might contribute to resistance to ionizing radiation, we identified four HOXB7-binding proteins by GST pull-down/affinity chromatography and confirmed their interactions by coimmunoprecipitation in vivo. Interestingly, all four HOXB7-binding proteins shared functions as genomic caretakers and included members of the DNA-dependent protein kinase holoenzyme (Ku70, Ku80, DNA-PK(cs)) responsible for DNA double-strand break repair by nonhomologous end joining pathway and poly(ADP) ribose polymerase. Exogenous and endogenous expression of HOXB7 enhanced nonhomologous end joining and DNA repair functions in vitro and in vivo, which were reversed by silencing HOXB7. This is the first mechanistic study providing definitive evidence for the involvement of any HOX protein in DNA double-strand break repair.

Abstract
Ectopic expression of LIM-only protein 2 (LMO2) in T-cells, as a result of chromosomal translocations or retroviral insertion, plays an important role in the onset of T-cell leukemias. Two transcripts of LMO2 gene (LMO2-a and LMO2-b) have been reported to encode a same 158-amino-acid protein. We have previously reported a novel transcript of human LMO2 gene (LMO2-c) encoding a 151-amino-acid protein, and defined its promoter region. In the present study, we investigated the regulation of the LMO2-c expression and the functions of LMO2-c. We found that LMO2-c expression is regulated by the cooperation of two essential hematopoietic transcription factors GATA-1 and PU.1 in various hematopoietic cell lines, suggesting an important functional role for LMO2-c in the hematopoietic system. More importantly, we demonstrated that LMO2-c acts as an antagonist of LMO2-a/b binding to its partners, therefore blocking the transactivation of LMO2-a/b on its target genes. These findings provide novel evidence to the functions of LMO2 gene in the hematopoietic system and leukemia.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the differentially expressed genes in lymph-node cells (LNC) of lymphomas and reactive lymph node hyperplasia, and to perform an initial bioinformatic analysis on a novel gene, KIAA0372, which is highly expressed in the LNC of lymphomas. mRNA extracted from LNC of lymphomas and reactive lymph node hyperplasia were respectively marked with biotin and hybridized with Gene Expression Chips, resulting in differentially expressed genes. Initial bioinformatic analysis was then performed on a novel gene named KIAA0372, whose function has not yet been explored. Its structure and genomic location, its product's physical and chemical properties, subcellular localization and functional domains, were also predicted. Further, a systematic evolution analysis was performed on similar proteins from among several species. Using Gene Expression Chips, many differentially expressed genes were uncovered. Efficient bioinformatic analysis has fundamentally determined that KIAA0372 is an extracellular protein which may be involved in TGF-β signaling. Microarray is an efficient and high throughput strategy for detection of differentially expressed genes. And KIAA0372 is thought to be a potential target for tumor research using bioinformatic analysis.

Abstract
It is known that polysaccharides extracted from the Phellinus linteus (PL) mushroom possess antitumour activity. We previously have demonstrated that high doses of PL render murine or human lung cancer cells susceptible to apoptosis. However, the molecular mechanisms of PL-mediated apoptosis have not been fully explored. In this study, we demonstrate that LNCaP cells expressing the androgen receptor (AR) are highly susceptible to apoptosis in response to treatment with high doses of PL. In this process, caspase 8 and its downstream effectors (such as BID), as well as ER stress-related, apoptotic signalling, are activated. In contrast, a moderate amount of apoptosis occurs in PC3 cells (that lack AR) after the same treatment, which does not activate ER-mediated apoptotic signalling. We also show that, in the process of PL-induced apoptosis, caspase 2 is induced in LNCaP cells, but not in PC3 cells. However, LNCaP cells that express a mutated AR or LNCaP cells treated with a caspase 2 inhibitor blocked ER stress-induced apoptotic signals. The magnitudes of the induction of apoptosis in these cells are comparable with what occurred in the PC3 cells. The data demonstrate that high doses of PL activate the AR-dependent and independent apoptotic pathways. Our study also suggests that caspase 2 is a key target in the determination of the susceptibility of prostate cancer cells to PL-induced apoptosis.

Abstract
A novel dynamic gain equalizer for flattening Er-doped fiber amplifiers based on a twisted long-period fiber grating (LPFG) induced by high-frequency CO(2) laser pulses is reported for the first time to our knowledge. Experimental results show that its transverse-load sensitivity is up to 0.34 dB/(g.mm(-1)), while the twist ratio of the twisted LPFG is approximately 20 rad/m, which is 7 times higher than that of a torsion-free LPFG. In addition, it is found that the strong orientation dependence of the transverse-load sensitivity of the torsion-free LPFG reported previously has been weakened considerably. Therefore such a dynamic gain equalizer based on the unique transverse-load characteristics of the twisted LPFG provides a much larger adjustable range and makes packaging of the gain equalizer much easier. A demonstration has been carried out to flatten an Er-doped fiber amplifier to +/-0.5 dB over a 32 nm bandwidth.

Abstract
Expression of homeobox A1 (HOXA1) results in oncogenic transformation of immortalized human mammary epithelial cells with aggressive tumor formation in vivo. However, the mechanisms by which HOXA1 mediates oncogenic transformation is not well defined. To identify molecules that could potentially be involved in HOXA1-mediated oncogenic transformation, microarray analysis was utilized to characterize and compare the gene expression pattern in response to forced expression or depletion of HOXA1 in human mammary carcinoma cells. Gene expression profiling identified that genes involved in the p44/42 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase activation pathway (GRB2, MAP kinase kinase (MEK1) and SDFR1) or p44/42 MAP kinase-regulated genes (IER3, EPAS1, PCNA and catalase) are downstream expression targets of HOXA1. Forced expression of HOXA1 increased GRB2 and MEK1 mRNA and protein expression and increased p44/42 MAP kinase phosphorylation, activity and Elk-1-mediated transcription. Use of a MEK1 inhibitor demonstrated that increased p44/42 MAP kinase activity is required for the HOXA1-mediated increase in cell proliferation, survival, oncogenicity and oncogenic transformation. Thus, modulation of the p44/42 MAP kinase pathway is one mechanism by which HOXA1 mediates oncogenic transformation of the human mammary epithelial cell.

Abstract
Two patients presented with provisional diagnoses of glioma. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging failed to show the boundaries of the tumor clearly. Positron emission tomography (PET)/CT with [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose and (11)C-methionine clearly showed the location, extent, and heterogeneity of the tumors. The tumors were resected under PET/CT neuronavigation guidance. Histological examination of the specimens showed that PET/CT neuronavigation provided reliable distinction between normal brain and glioma, and that the uptake of PET tracers can indicate the degree of proliferation.

Abstract
The failure of adenovirus-mediated gene therapy often derives from the absence of coxsackie and adenovirus receptor (CAR) expression in target cells. We hypothesize that the slight up-regulation of CAR expression might boost the effect of adenovirus-mediated gene therapy in ovarian cancer. To test this hypothesis, we transfected full-length and intracellular-domain-deleted (tailless) CAR plasmids into CAR-deficient ovarian cancer cell line SKOV3. We observed significant elevations of the in vitro killing effect of Adv-TK and oncolytic adenovirus-mediated cytopathic effect (CPE) in transfected sub-clones, and tailless-transfected SKOV3 showed higher CAR expressions than full-length CAR-transfected cells. We conclude that the extracellular domain of CAR is essential for adenovirus-based gene therapy and, furthermore, that its intracellular domain might play an important role in the regulation of its own expression.

Abstract
We herein demonstrate that autocrine human growth hormone production in human mammary carcinoma cells results in increased telomerase activity as a result of specific up-regulation of telomerase catalytic subunit (human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT)) mRNA and protein. This increase in hTERT gene expression is not due to increased transcriptional activation of the hTERT promoter but is the result of increased stability of hTERT mRNA exerted by CU-rich cis-regulatory sequences present in the 3'-untranslated region of TERT mRNA. Autocrine human growth hormone up-regulates two poly(C)-binding proteins, alphaCP1 and alphaCP2, which bind to these cis-regulatory elements and stabilize hTERT mRNA. We have therefore demonstrated that post-transcriptional modulation of the level of hTERT mRNA is one mechanism for regulation of cellular telomerase activity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the expression of cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1R) mRNA and pathological changes in rat hippocampus after deprivation of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. METHODS Totally 42 Sprague-Dawley male rats were randomly divided into cage control (CC), tank control (TC) and the sleep deprivation groups (SD). The SD and TC rats were sacrificed at the end of 1 d, 3 d and 5 d sleep deprivation periods, respectively. The modified multiple platform methods were established for the REM sleep deprivation. CB1R mRNA was measured by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The hippocampus sections of different stages were observed with electron microscope. RESULT In SD 1 d group, the expression of CB1R mRNA was significantly increased compared with the CC, TC, SD 3 d and SD 5 d groups (P <0.05) while in SD 3 d group it was reduced. The expression of CB1R mRNA of SD 5 d group was significantly higher than that of the SD 3 d group (P <0.05). Neuron apoptosis was found in SD 3 d and SD 5 d groups. CONCLUSION Sleep deprivation can cause brain injury with the changes of CB1R mRNA expression.

Abstract
The prolyl isomerase Pin1, which specifically catalyzes conformational changes in certain proline-directed phosphorylation sites, is thought to be a critical catalyst for multiple oncogenic pathways. However, little is known about the role of Pin1 in human cervical cancer. Our previous study showed that Pin1 was overexpressed in cervical cancer tissues as well as cell lines. In this study, whether Pin1 is involved in cervical oncogenesis by regulating cyclin D1 was explored and the potential of Pin1-targeted gene silencing in inhibiting cellular growth and tumorigenicity in cervical cancer was investigated. A Pin1-directed shRNA and a sense Pin1 plasmid were constructed, and then the effects of the shRNA and the sense plasmid on HeLa cells were evaluated. The results showed that Pin1 directly regulated cyclin D1 levels. In addition, silencing Pin1 with RNAi significantly reduced cancer cell proliferation, colony formation, and strongly enhanced the apoptosis of HeLa cells. It is suggested that Pin1 may contribute to cervical tumorigenesis by regulating cyclin D1 expression and Pin1 may serve as a promising molecular target for diagnostics and therapeutics in cervical cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The effects of a number of diffusion-encoding gradient directions (NDGD) on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) indices have been studied previously with theoretic analysis and numeric simulations. In this study, we made in vivo measurements in the human brain to compare different clinical scan protocols and to evaluate their effects on the calculated DTI indices. METHODS Fifteen healthy volunteers were scanned with a 1.5T MR scanner. Single-shot DTI images were acquired using 3 protocols different in NDGD and number of excitations (NEX) for each direction (NDGD/NEX = 6/10, 21/3, 31/2). Means and standard error of mean (SEM) were calculated and compared in 6 regions of interest (ROIs) for mean diffusivity (D), fractional anisotropy (FA), diffusion tensor eigenvalues (lambda(1), lambda(2), and lambda(3)), and correlation coefficients (r) of these indices among the 3 DTI protocols. RESULTS At the ROI level, no significant differences were found for the mean and SEM of D and FA among protocols (P > .05). The 6-NDGD protocol, however, yielded higher values for lambda(1) and lambda(2) and lower values for lambda(3) in most ROIs (P < .05) compared with the other protocols. At the voxel level, the correlation between the protocols r(21-31) were higher than r(6-21) and r(6-31) in most ROIs. The correlation of FA among 3 protocols also increased with increasing anisotropy. CONCLUSION For ROI analyses, different NDGDs lead to similar values of FA and D but different eigenvalues. However, different NDGDs at the voxel level provide varying values. The selection of the NDGD, therefore, should depend on the focus of different DTI applications.

Abstract
It has been demonstrated that the Phellinus linteus (PL) mushroom, which mainly consists of polysaccharides, possesses antitumour activity. The mechanisms of PL against malignant growth remain unknown. The anticancer drug doxorubicin (Dox) has been shown to induce apoptosis via initiating a caspase cascade. In this investigation, we tested the effect of PL on Dox-induced apoptosis in prostate cancer LNCaP cells. We showed that PL or Dox, at relatively low doses, does not induce apoptosis in the cells. However, combination treatment with low doses of PL and Dox results in a synergistic effect on the induction of apoptosis. In this apoptotic process, caspases 8, 3 and BID are cleaved, and the addition of caspase inhibitor z-VADfmk completely blocks apoptosis. In addition, JNK is activated in response to PL or the combination treatment in LNCaP cells. The suppression of JNK partially inhibits the induction of apoptosis elicited by the co-treatment. These findings indicate that PL has a synergistic effect with Dox to activate caspases in prostate cancer LNCaP cells. Our study also suggests that PL has therapeutic potential to augment the magnitude of apoptosis induced by antiprostate cancer drugs.

Abstract
A tumor suppressor function has been attributed to RUNX3, a member of the RUNX family of transcription factors. Here, we examined alterations in the expression of three members, RUNX1, RUNX2, and RUNX3, and their interacting partner, CBF-beta, in breast cancer. Among them, RUNX3 was consistently underexpressed in breast cancer cell lines and primary tumors. Fifty percent of the breast cancer cell lines (n = 19) showed hypermethylation at the promoter region and displayed significantly lower levels of RUNX3 mRNA expression (P < 0.0001) and protein (P < 0.001). In primary Singaporean breast cancers, 9 of 44 specimens showed undetectable levels of RUNX3 by immunohistochemistry. In 35 of 44 tumors, however, low levels of RUNX3 protein were present. Remarkably, in each case, protein was mislocalized to the cytoplasm. In primary tumors, hypermethylation of RUNX3 was observed in 23 of 44 cases (52%) and was undetectable in matched adjacent normal breast epithelium. Mislocalization of the protein, with or without methylation, seems to account for RUNX3 inactivation in the vast majority of the tumors. In in vitro and in vivo assays, RUNX3 behaved as a growth suppressor in breast cancer cells. Stable expression of RUNX3 in MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells led to a more cuboidal phenotype, significantly reduced invasiveness in Matrigel invasion assays, and suppressed tumor formation in immunodeficient mice. This study provides biological and mechanistic insights into RUNX3 as the key member of the family that plays a role in breast cancer. Frequent protein mislocalization and methylation could render RUNX3 a valuable marker for early detection and risk assessment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the influential factors of fluid management during orthotopic liver transplantation surgery. METHODS Ninety-six patients scheduled for orthotopic liver transplantation were divided into two groups according to the liver function: the decompensatory group (Child-Pugh score C, n=50) and the compensatory group (Child-Pugh score A or B, n=46). According to the intraoperative bleeding amount, the compensatory group was further divided into subgroup A (< 2,000 ml) and subgroup B (> or = 2,000 ml). Plasma albumin concentration and the parameters of blood coagulation were measured before and after the surgery. The intraoperative bleeding amount and the amount of the blood products infused were recorded. RESULTS Before the surgery, prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) were significantly longer in decompensatory group than in compensatory group (both P<0.05); blood platelets (PLT) and fibrinogen were significantly lower in decompensatory group than in compensatory group (both P<0.05). After the surgery, there were no significant differences in PT, APTT, PLT, and fibrinogen between the two groups (all P>0.05). The amounts of the blood products infused intraoperatively in subgroup A were significantly lower than those in the decompensatory group (all P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the amount of the infused blood products between the subgroup B and decompensatory group (all P>0.05). CONCLUSION During orthotopic liver transplantation surgery, patients with decompensatory liver function, or those who suffered large amounts of intraoperative bleeding, need infusion of larger amount of blood products.

Abstract
Addition of urea-based antifreeze admixtures during cement mixing can make it possible to concrete cement in construction of buildings in cold weather. This, however has led to increasing indoor air pollution due to continuous transformation and emission from urea to gaseous ammonia in indoor concrete walls. In order to control ammonia from indoor concrete walls, aqueous dispersion of nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2) was prepared and mixed with silicone additive to establish a treating bath. Cotton fabrics were finished with this treating bath by using pad-dry-cure process and then characterized by X-Ray Diffractometer, Infrared Fourier Transform Spectrometer and Scanning Electron Microscope. The gaseous ammonia was derived from an environmental condition simulated chamber. The heterogeneous decomposition of gaseous ammonia by UV/TiO2 process in an annular photoreactor fixed with the TiO2-coated cotton fabric was studied under various dosages of aqueous nano-TiO2 dispersion, initial ammonia concentration, relative humidity and gas flow rate. A design equation of surface catalytic kinetics was developed for describing the decomposition of ammonia in air streams by UV/TiO2 process at given operating conditions. Experimental results indicated that increasing dosage of aqueous nano-TiO2 dispersion improved the ammonia decomposition of cotton fabric, which was prepared. At a constant temperature of 25 degrees C, ammonia in the air stream was effective removed by decreasing initial ammonia concentration and gas flow rate. For moisture in the range of 15-65%, when the relatively humidity level was increased to 45%, the decomposition of ammonia was remarkably enhanced, and the decomposition of ammonia could be inhibited by excessive moisture.

Abstract
Osteoblasts, normally derived from undifferentiated mesenchymal precursor cells, acquire their characteristic phenotypes when induced by various regulatory factors, one of which is bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2). Our recent studies suggest that expression of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA) inhibitor G (PKIG) is down-regulated as human mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) undergo BMP-2-induced osteoblastic differentiation. This raises our hypothesis that the PKA pathway is involved in osteogenesis. In this report, we demonstrated that PKIG in human MSCs and its murine homologue PKA inhibitor gamma (PKIgamma) in murine pre-myoblast C2C12 cells were down-regulated when these cells were treated with BMP-2. On the contrary, the PKA activity of C2C12 cells was increased upon BMP-2 treatment. Overexpression of PKIgamma in C2C12 cells was shown to repress mRNA expression of early osteoblastic markers osterix and type I collagen while inhibiting the PKA activity. This correlated with decreased alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities. Furthermore, inhibition of the PKA activity using its specific inhibitor KT5720 was found to have the similar effect, whereas 8-Br-cAMP, a specific PKA activator, accelerated BMP-2-induced ALP activities. Finally, this study showed that BMP-2 treatment promoted activities of transcription regulatory elements including cAMP response element (CRE) and activating protein-1 (AP1). This effect of BMP-2 was diminished in PKIgamma-overexpressed C2C12 cells. Taken together, our results indicate that the activation of the PKA pathway may be one of key BMP-2-activated signaling events that lead to osteogenesis and that downregulation of PKIgamma may be prerequisite for the PKA activation during the osteoblastic differentiation of precursor cells.

Abstract
The dibenzofuran (DF)-degrading bacterium, Janibacter terrae strain XJ-1, was isolated from sediment from East Lake in Wuhan, China. This strain grows aerobically on DF as the sole source of carbon and energy; it has a doubling time of 12 hours at 30 degrees C; and it almost completely degraded 100 mg/L(-1) DF in 5 days, producing 2,2',3-trihydroxybiphenyl, salicylic acid, gentisic acid, and other metabolites. The dbdA (DF dioxygenase) gene cluster in the strain is almost identical to that on a large plasmid in Terrabacter sp. YK3. Unlike Janibacter sp. strain YY-1, XJ-1 accumulates gentisic acid rather than catechol as a final product of DF degradation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the effect of short hairpin RNA (shRNA) on the expression of Pin1 mRNA and protein and its influence on the proliferation and apoptosis in HeLa cell lines. METHODS The recombinant plasmid pSIREN-Pin1 expressing Pin1-targeted shRNA was constructed and then transfected into cervical cancer cell lines by lipofectamine (HeLa/p-shRNA), the control vector pSIREN-Con (HeLa/p-Con) and culture media (HeLa) as control, respectively. The Pin1 mRNA and protein expression were detected by RT-PCR and immunoblotting. The proliferation of cells after transfection was detected by methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) and colony formation in soft agar. Flow cytometry (FCM) was used to test the apoptosis of cells marked with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-annexin V. RESULTS After transfected with pSIREN-Pin1 for 48 h, the expression of Pin1 mRNA and protein in HeLa cells were 0.19 +/- 0.05 and 0.33 +/- 0.14 respectively. Compared with HeLa/p-Con cells (0.84 +/- 0.16, 0.79 +/- 0.17) and HeLa cells (0.89 +/- 0.11, 0.81 +/- 0.15), the difference was significant respectively (P < 0.05). The proliferation was suppressed significantly in HeLa/p-shRNA cells. The colony ratios are as follows: HeLa/p-shRNA, (12 +/- 3)%; HeLa/p-Con, (20 +/- 5)%; HeLa, (24 +/- 4)% (P < 0.05). The apoptosis ratio was (24.3 +/- 5.7)% in HeLa/p-shRNA cells. It was significantly higher than that in HeLa/p-Con cells (5.0 +/- 1.4)% and HeLa cells (1.8 +/- 0.4)% (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS RNA interference through Pin1-targeted shRNA can effectively inhibit the expression of target gene, and might be potentially useful in gene therapy of Pin1 related cervical cancers. Silencing Pin1 gene can suppress the proliferation and promote the apoptosis in HeLa cells.

Abstract
The critical role of polyamines in cell growth has led to the development of a number of agents that interfere with polyamine metabolism including a novel class of polyamine analogues, oligoamines. Here we demonstrate that oligoamines specifically suppress the mRNA and protein expression of estrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha) and ERalpha target genes in ER-positive human breast cancer cell lines, whereas neither ERbeta nor other steroid hormonal receptors are affected by oligoamines. The constitutive expression of a cytomegalovirus promoter-driven exogenous ERalpha in ER-negative MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells was not altered by oligoamines, suggesting that oligoamines specifically suppress ERalpha transcription rather than affect mRNA or protein stability. Further analysis demonstrated that oligoamines disrupted the DNA binding activity of Sp1 transcription factor family members to an ERalpha minimal promoter element containing GC/CA-rich boxes. Treatment of MDA-MB-231 cells with the JNK-specific inhibitor SP600125 or expression of the c-Jun dominant negative inhibitor TAM67 blocked the oligoamine-activated JNK/c-Jun pathway and enhanced oligoamine-inhibited ERalpha expression, suggesting that AP-1 is a positive regulator of ERalpha expression and that oligoamine-activated JNK/AP-1 activity may antagonize the down-regulation of ERalpha induced by oligoamines. Taken together, these results suggest a novel antiestrogenic mechanism for specific polyamine analogues in human breast cancer cells.

Abstract
Addition of urea-based antifreeze admixtures during cement mixing can make it possible to produce concrete cement in construction of buildings in cold weather; this, however, has led to increasing indoor air pollution due to continuous transformation and emission from urea to gaseous ammonia in indoor concrete wall. It is believed that ammonia is harmful to human body and exposure to ammonia can cause some serious symptoms such as headaches, burns, and even permanent damage to the eyes and lungs. In order to understand the emission of ammonia from indoor concrete wall in civil building and assess the health risk of people living in these buildings, the experimental pieces of concrete wall were first prepared by concreting cement and urea-based antifreeze admixtures to simulate the indoor wall in civil building in this work. Then environmental chamber was adopted for studying the effect of temperature, relative humility and air exchange rate on emission of ammonia from experimental pieces of concrete wall. Also the field experiment was made at selected rooms in given civil buildings. Exposure and potential dose of adult and children exposed to indoor/outdoor ammonia in summer and in winter are calculated and evaluated by using Scenario Evaluation Approach. The results indicated that high air exchange rate leads to decreased ammonia concentration, and elevation of temperature causes increasing ammonia concentration and volatilizing rate in chamber. The complete emission of ammonia from the wall containing urea-based antifreeze admixtures needs more than 10 years in general. Ventilating or improving air exchange can play a significant role in reducing ammonia concentration in actual rooms in field experiments. Urea-based antifreeze admixtures in concrete wall can give rise to high exposure and potential dose, especially in summer. Generally, adults have a high potential dose than children, while children have personal average dose rate beyond adults in the same conditions.

Abstract
A demodulation algorithm for spatial-frequency-division-multiplexed fiber-optic Fizeau strain sensor networks with a large number of sensors is proposed to effectively reduce the cross talk between any two adjacent sensors and hence substantially enhance the multiplexing capability of the network, which is based on the Pisarenko algorithm. The cross talk between two fiber-optic Fizeau sensors is investigated experimentally. The experimental results show that a strain accuracy of better than +/-10 micro permittivity can be achieved even when the cavity length difference is approximately 100 microm. It was demonstrated that the multiplexing capability of the spatial-frequency-division-multiplexed fiber-optic Fizeau sensor network can be approximately 5 times greater than that of the conventional fast-Fourier-transform algorithm, and this can lead to achievement of a sensing network with a multiplexing capability of as many as 1000 Fizeau sensors.

Abstract
A novel series of BPU analogues were synthesized and evaluated for antitumor activity. In particular, BPU sulfur analogues 6n and 7d were shown to possess up to 10-fold increased potency, when compared to 1 (NSC-639829), against cancer cell lines. 6n was more effective than 1 in causing apoptosis of MCF-7 cells. When compared to other drugs with a similar mechanism of action, 6n retained significant ability to inhibit tubulin assembly, with an IC(50) of 2.1 microM.

Abstract
Telomerase activation represents an early step in carcinogenesis. Increased telomerase activity in cervical cancer suggests a potential target for the development of novel therapeutic drugs. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of telomerase activity on the biological features of HeLa cells and the possible mechanisms of enhanced apoptosis rate induced by sodium butyrate after telomerase inhibition. We introduced vectors encoding dominate negative (DN)-hTERT, wild-type (WT)-hTERT, or a control vector expressing only a drug-resistance marker into HeLa cells. Thus we assessed the biological effects of telomerase activity on telomere length, cell proliferation, chemosensitivity and radiosensitivity. In order to understand the mechanisms in which DN-hTERT enhances the apoptosis induced by sodium butyrate, we detected the release status of cytochrome c and apoptosis inducing factor (AIF) from mitochondria. Ectopic expression of DN-hTERT resulted in inhibition of telomerase activity, reduction of telomere length, decreased colony formation ability, and loss of tumorigenicity in nude mice. Moreover, DN-hTERT transfected HeLa cells with shortened telomeres were more susceptible to multiple chemotherapeutic agents and radiation. WT-hTERT transfected HeLa cells with longer telomeres exhibited resistance to radiation and chemotherapeutic agents. Our data demonstrate that elevated release level of cytochrome c and AIF from mitochondria might contribute to the enhanced apoptosis in DN-hTERT transfected HeLa cells after treatment with sodium butyrate. Inhibition of telomerase might serve as a promising adjunctive therapy combined with conventional therapy in cervical cancer.
