Sense and nonsense in genetic epidemiology: a critique of the statistical model of Williams and Iyer

The statistical model for the analysis of twin-family data of Williams and Iyer is examined. The model uses a large number of redundant parameters. It does not lead to quantitative predictions for new relationships. It allows for epistasis but not dominance. It makes assumptions about assortative mating which are inconsistent with any biologically plausible mechanism. It assumes that the environmental correlation between parent and offspring is due to the direct effect of the parental genotypes, not phenotypes, on offspring environment. Other models which avoid these problems are more appropriate for the analysis of extended twin-family data.

Education policy and the heritability of educational attainment

Many workers assume that genetically determined differences in intellectual ability will be influenced little by changes in educational policy or other environmental interventions. Others, however, have suggested that increasing equality of educational opportunity will lead to an increase in the heritability of educational attainment. The resolution of this issue has been delayed until now because of the extremely large sample sizes which would be required. Education data on twins and their parents, from the Norwegian twin panel, provide a unique opportunity to determine the impact on the heritability of educational attainment of the more liberal social and educational policies introduced in Norway after the Second World War. As reported here, for individuals born before 1940 there is a strong effect of family background on educational attainment, accounting for 47% of the variance, though genetic factors account for an additional 41% of the variance. For females born after 1940 and before 1961, the relative importance of genetic (38-45%) and familial environmental (41-50%) differences changes very little. For males born during the same period, the broad heritability of educational attainment has increased substantially (67-74%), and the environmental impact of family background has correspondingly decreased (8-10%). For males, at least, having well-educated parents no longer predicts educational success, as measured by duration of education, independent of the individual's own innate abilities.

Evidence for polygenic epistatic interactions in man?

Studies of multifactorial inheritance in man have ignored nonadditive gene action or attributed it entirely to dominance. Reanalyses of dermatoglyphic data on monozygotic and dizygotic twins, siblings and parents and offspring suggest that a substantial proportion of variation in total finger pattern intensity is due to epistatic interactions between additive genetic deviations, not dominance. Bootstrapping and power simulations support this interpretation of the data. We believe this is the strongest evidence so far for polygenic epistasis in man.

The prevalence and pathogenicity of Chorioptes bovis (Hering, 1845) and Psoroptes cuniculi (Delafond, 1859) (Acari: Psoroptidae) infestations in feral goats in New Zealand

Between October 1976 and January 1980 a total of 368 feral goats was examined in New Zealand for the presence of Chorioptes bovis and 434 for the presence of Psoroptes cuniculi. The seasonal pattern of C. bovis infestation in feral goats was similar to that seen in sheep and cattle. The prevalence of infestation reached 100% in July and August (winter) and declined to 27% in February and March (summer). Fewer goats were infested with P. cuniculi and prevalence of infestation reached a maximum of 41% in July. No goats were found infested in the December and January samples. Chorioptes bovis infestation was independent of the age and sex of hosts. Infestation with P. cuniculi was independent of the sex of the hosts, but older goats were more frequently infested (16%) than younger goats (8.6%). Unilateral infestation with P. cuniculi was more common (74.5%) than bilateral infestation. No severe lesions were associated with C. bovis, but 21.3% of goats with P. cuniculi had the external auditory meatus blocked by waxy material and 12.8% had scabby encrustations on the ears. The importance of goats as a possible source of infestation to domestic animals is discussed.
