Abstract
CD44 is a highly glycosylated cell adhesion molecule that is involved in lymphocyte infiltration of inflamed tissues. We have demonstrated previously that sialic acid residues of CD44 negatively regulates its receptor function and CD44 plays an important role in the accumulation of T helper type 2 (Th2) cells in the airway of a murine model of acute asthma. Here we evaluated the role of sialidase in the hyaluronic acid (HA) receptor function of CD44 expressed on CD4+ T cells, as well as in the development of a mite antigen-induced murine model of acute asthma. Splenic CD4+ T cell binding of HA was examined with flow cytometry. Expression of sialidases (Neu1, Neu2, Neu3 and Neu4) in spleen cells was evaluated by quantitative real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) were evaluated in the asthmatic Neu1-deficient mouse strain SM/J model. Splenic CD4+ T cells from asthmatic model mice displayed increased HA receptor activity of CD44 after culture with the antigen, along with characteristic parallel induction of sialidase (Neu1) expression. This induction of HA binding was suppressed significantly by a sialidase inhibitor and was not observed in SM/J mice. Th2 cytokine concentration and absolute number of Th2 cells in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and AHR were decreased in SM/J mice. In conclusion, HA receptor activity of CD44 and acute asthmatic reactions, including Th2-mediated airway inflammation and AHR, are dependent upon Neu1 enzymatic activity. Our observation suggests that Neu1 may be a target molecule for the treatment of asthma.

Abstract
AIM Preterm infants are at risk of osteopathy of prematurity (OP). The present study aims to assess quantitative ultrasound as a safe and non-invasive method in evaluating bone mineral status in the critically ill preterm infant. METHODS Sixty preterm infants (27 females) have been evaluated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of Siena. Gestational age was between 22 and 36 weeks and birth weight ranged between 610 and 3240 g. A single operator did all the measurements on the second metacarpus by the DBM Sonic BP (IGEA). Ultrasound parameters were bone transmission time (BTT, micros) and speed of sound (SOS, m/s). RESULTS BTT positively increased with birth gestational age (r=0.72, P<0.001, F-Ratio=62.4428), birth weight (r=0.7827, P<0.001, F-Ratio=91.7274) and birth length (r=0.7729, P<0.001, F-Ratio=86.0748). SOS was also related with gestational age (r=0.2937, P<0.023, F-Ratio=5.4768), birth weight (r=0.2634, P<0.042, F-Ratio=4.3250) and birth length (r=0.3252, P<0.011, F-Ratio=6.8596). Small infants for gestational age showed BTT values lower then infants with appropriate size for gestational age (P<0.03). There was no difference between male and female infants. CONCLUSION Quantitative ultrasound is a non-invasive method, which is easy to perform in a Neonatal Intensive Unit, safe, harmless and gentle. This method detects subtle differences in bone mineral status, according to gestational age, weight and length. Quantitative ultrasound is a useful screening tool for early detection of bone status in newborns and a valid method for the longitudinal assessment of bone in growing children.

Abstract
This study investigated how CD8(+) T cell subsets respond to allo- and infectious immunity after living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Early alloimmunity: 56 recipients were classified into three types according to the post-transplant course; type I demonstrated uneventful post-transplant course, type II developed severe sepsis leading to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome or retransplantation and type III with acute rejection. In 23 type I recipients, the interleukin (IL)-12 receptor beta-1 (R beta 1)(+) cells of central memory T cells (Il-12R beta 1(+) T(CM)) were increased above the pretransplant level. In 16 type II recipients, IL-12R beta 1(+) T(CM) was decreased markedly below the pretransplant level on postoperative day (POD) 5. In 17 type III recipients, IL-12R beta 1(+) T(CM) was decreased for a more prolonged period until POD 10. Along with down-regulation of IL-12R beta 1(+) T(CM), the IL-12R beta 1(+) cells of CCR7-negative subsets (CNS) as well as perforin, interferon (IFN)-gamma and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha decreased gradually, resulting in the down-regulation of effectors and cytotoxicity. The down-regulation of IL-12R beta 1(+) T(CM) was suggested to be due to the recruitment of alloantigen-primed T cells into the graft, and then their entry into the secondary lymphoid organ, resulting in graft destruction. Infectious immunity: immunocompetent memory T cells with the capacity to enhance effectors and cytotoxicity were generated in response to post-transplant infection along with both up-regulation of the IL-12R beta 1(+) T(CM) and an increase in the CNS showing the highest level of IL-12R beta 1(+) cells. In conclusion, this work demonstrated that the IL-12R beta 1(+) cells of T(CM) and CNS are regulated in a tightly coupled manner and that expression levels of IL-12R beta 1(+) T(CM) play a crucial role in controlling allo- and infectious immunity.

Abstract
In order to evaluate the immune state of dogs suffering from pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH), peripheral lymphocyte subsets were examined. Twenty seven PDH dogs and eight healthy control dogs were used in the current study. Eight healthy dogs served as the control group. Twenty seven PDH dogs were categorized into 4 groups based on their post serum cortisol concentrations by ACTH stimulation test: 2-5, excellent control (n = 8); 5-20, fair control (n = 7); >20, poor control (n = 4); and untreated (n = 8). Cell counts were executed with white blood cells (WBC), lymphocytes, CD3(+) (T lymphocytes), CD4(+) (Helper T lymphocytes), CD8(+) (Cytotoxic T lymphocytes), CD21(+) (B lymphocytes) cells in addition to calculating CD4(+)/CD8(+) ratio. Results indicated a significant difference in lymphocyte numbers and lymphocyte subset populations (CD3(+), CD4(+), CD8(+), and CD21(+) cells) between PDH and control dogs. Moreover, comparison of the PDH groups (excellent control; fair control; poor control; untreated) demonstrated that all groups had a significant decrease in lymphocytes numbers (CD3(+), CD4(+) and CD21(+) cell counts) as compared to control group. Meanwhile, no significant differences were observed in WBC counts and CD4(+)/CD8(+) ratio between groups. Furthermore, lymphocyte subset distribution in excellent control PDH dogs without concurrent disease (n = 4) better resembled that of control dogs as compared to PDH dogs with concurrent disease (n = 4). PDH dogs may be suffering from an immuno-depressed state as evidenced by significant differences in lymphocyte subset populations. Furthermore, treatment of both PDH and concurrent disease might improve lymphocyte subset distribution.

Abstract
Dietary therapy is an important treatment component for diabetes mellitus (DM). In this study, the impact of three different commercially available diet regiments (1 general use and 2 aimed for treating obesity and DM) on short-term post-prandial serum glucose and insulin concentrations of five healthy cats to better understand what impact each of these diets may have for diabetic cats. The diet regiments used in this study were as follows: C/D dry (General Use- Low protein, High fat, High carbohydrate, and Low fiber), M/D dry (DM- High protein, High fat, Low carbohydrate, and High Fiber), and W/D dry (DM- Low Protein, Low Fat, High Carbohydrate, and High Fiber). No significant difference in post-prandial serum glucose levels were observed with the C/D (84.6 +/- 1.5 mg/dl) and W/D (83.8 +/- 1.4 mg/dl) dry diets when compared to pre-prandial fasting levels (83.9 +/- 1.4 mg/dl). However, a significant reduction was observed with the M/D diet (78.9 +/- 0.8 mg/dl) which had 50-60% less carbohydrates than either C/D or W/D diet. Unlike what was observed with post-prandial glucose levels, an interesting pattern emerged with post-prandial insulin levels, which were increasing with W/D, C/D, and M/D diets in that order (1.1 +/- 0.2, 1.7 +/- 0.2, and 2.3 +/- 0.2 ng/ml respectively). Most surprising, though, was the fact that the W/D diet did not seem to stimulate insulin secretion as compared to pre-prandial levels (1.1 +/- 0.1 ng/ml) in healthy cats. Interestingly, the W/D diet had high levels of carbohydrate and low levels of protein. Coincidentally, the only diet (M/D) which had a significant reduction in post-prandial glucose also showed the highest increase in post-prandial insulin in healthy cats. Therefore, dietary amounts of carbohydrate, fat, protein and fiber can all have an individual impact on post-prandial glycemia and subsequent insulin requirement levels. Just as concepts regarding dietary management of people with DM are evolving, investigators are reassessing what constitutes the ideal diet for the diabetic feline. As such, having a better understanding for each dietary component, may lead us to better understand how we can synergize certain dietary components to aid in DM management.

Abstract
Measurements of serum fructosamine, glycated hemoglobin, and glycated albumin (GA) complement serum glucose concentration for better management of diabetes mellitus (DM). Especially, the serum fructosamine test has long been used for diagnosing and monitoring the effect of treatment of DM in dogs. However, fructosamine tests are currently not performed in veterinary medicine in Japan. GA and fructoasmine levels have been shown to strongly correlate. However, the clinical implications of using GA remain to be elucidated. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was threefold: 1) Determine whether GA% is altered by acute hyperglycemia in normal dogs, simulating stress induced hyperglycemia; 2) Demonstrate that GA% does not dynamically change with diurnal variation of blood glucose concentration in diabetic dogs; and 3) Investigate whether GA% is capable of providing an index of glycemic control for 1-3 weeks in diabetic dogs as is the case with diabetic human patients. Our study demonstrated that serum GA% remains very stable and unaltered under acute hyperglycemic conditions (intravenous glucose injection) and in spite of diurnal variation of blood glucose concentration. Furthermore, serum GA% can reflect long-term changes (almost 1-3 weeks) in blood glucose concentration and the effect of injected insulin in diabetic dogs.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common endocrine disease in cats and dogs with increasing prevalence. Type 1 DM appears to be the most common form of diabetes in dogs whereas Type 2 DM prevails for cats. Since insulin resistance is more frequently encountered in cats than dogs, our laboratory was interested in determining whether differences at the insulin signaling pathway level and differences in glucose and lipid metabolism could be observed between cats and dogs. Insulin resistance has been positively correlated to insulin signaling pathway abnormalities. As such, this study measured insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1), insulin receptor substrate-2 (IRS-2), and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-K) P-85alpha mRNA expression levels in classical insulin-responsive sensitive tissues (liver, skeletal muscle, and abdominal fat) and peripheral leukocytes between cats and dogs by qRT-PCR. Different tissues were sampled because it is currently unknown where insulin-resistance arises from. In addition, enzymes involved in glucose and lipid metabolism, malate dehydrogenase (MDH), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and fatty acid synthase (FAS) were also assessed since glucose and lipid metabolism differs between cats and dogs. Overall, IRS-1, IRS-2, PI3-K, MDH, G6DPH, and FAS mRNA tissue expression profiles demonstrated different levels of expression, in various tissues for both canines and felines, which was expected. No distinct expression pattern emerged; however, differences were noted between canines and felines. In addition, IRS-1, IRS-2, PI3-K, MDH, G6DPH, and FAS mRNA expression was significantly higher in canine versus feline tissues, including peripheral leukocytes. Remarkable differences in insulin signaling gene expression between felines and canines indicate that cats may have an underlying low insulin sensitivity level due to low IRS-1, IRS-2, and PI3-K P-85alpha mRNA expression levels which would predispose cats to develop insulin resistance. Moreover, differences in glucose and lipid metabolism related gene expression (MDH, G6DPH, and FAS) demonstrate that felines have an overall lower metabolic rate in various tissues which may be attributed to overall lower insulin signaling gene expression and a lack of physical activity as compared to canines. Therefore, a combination of genetic and environmental factors appears to make felines more prone to suffer from insulin resistance and type 2 DM than canines.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) animal models have provided ample opportunity for investigating pathogenesis, as well as to evaluate novel treatment and prevention options for the disease. Because the domestic cat shares a similar environment with humans, it is also confronted with many similar risk factors for diabetes, such as physical inactivity and obesity. Obesity is a significant risk factor for diabetes in cats, and as such, the domestic cat may serve as an ideal model for investigating obesity induced insulin resistance. This study determined changes in insulin signaling genes within insulin sensitive tissues of obese felines. Quantitative RT-PCR was performed to determine mRNA levels of three important insulin signaling genes which have been implicated with insulin resistance: insulin receptor substrate (IRS)-1, IRS-2, and phosphatidylinositol 3'-kinase (PI3-K) p85alpha. Obese cats had significantly lower IRS-2 and PI3-K p85alpha mRNA levels in liver and skeletal muscle as compared to control cats. This down regulation of insulin signaling genes in obese cats mirrors that of obese humans and rodents suffering from insulin resistance. Interestingly, preprandial blood tests indicated that our obese cats were no different from control cats with regards to glucose tolerance and insulin resistance, thus indicating that the obese cats used in our study had a moderate level of obesity. Therefore, insulin signaling gene alterations were occurring in insulin sensitive tissues of moderately obese felines before glucose intolerance was clinically evident. As such, the monitoring of key insulin signaling genes may have some important diagnostic value to determine the risk level and degree of obesity induced insulin resistance.

Abstract
Adenosine A(2A) receptors are found on striatal neurones projecting to the external pallidum. KW-6002 (istradefylline) is a potent and selective antagonist for the adenosine A(2A) receptors in the CNS and acts to inhibit the excessive activity of this pathway in the MPTP marmoset model of PD, thus relieving parkinsonism. The objectives of this study were to investigate the regional binding of the novel positron emission tomography tracer [(11)C]KW-6002 in the healthy human brain and the rat brain, along with receptor occupancy by cold KW-6002 at varying doses in human. The highest [(11)C]KW-6002 uptake in the rat brain was seen in striatum and lower levels in cortex and cerebellum. Brain [(11)C]KW-6002 uptake was well characterized in humans by a two-tissue compartmental model with a blood volume term, and the ED(50) of cold KW-6002 was 0.5 mg in the striatum. Over 90% receptor occupancy was achieved with daily oral doses of greater than 5 mg. In humans, blockable binding was present in all gray matter structures including the cerebellum, which has not been reported to express A(2A) receptors. MRS 1745, an A(2B) receptor selective antagonist, had no effect on the cerebellar binding of [(11)C]KW-6002 in rats, suggesting that this blockable signal is unlikely to result from an affinity for adenosine A(2B) receptors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The safety and efficacy of istradefylline, a selective adenosine A(2A) receptor antagonist, was evaluated in a 12-week, double-blind study in levodopa-treated Parkinson disease (PD) subjects with motor complications. METHODS Levodopa-treated PD subjects (n = 395) received istradefylline 20 mg/day (n = 163), istradefylline 60 mg/day (n = 155), or placebo (n = 77) at 40 sites. The primary efficacy variable was the change in the percentage of time per day spent in the OFF state. Secondary measurements assessed change in ON time, Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale, and Clinical Global Impression. Safety monitoring included clinical laboratory, electrocardiograms, vital signs, physical/neurologic examinations, and adverse events (AEs). RESULTS Changes from baseline to endpoint in the percentage OFF time in the active groups compared with placebo were -4.35% (95% CI -8.16 to -0.54; p = 0.026) for istradefylline 20 mg/day and -4.49% (95% CI -8.35 to -0.62; p = 0.024) for 60 mg/day; these changes were significant (analysis of covariance). For total hours, istradefylline demonstrated mean differences from placebo of -0.64 hours (95% CI -1.30 to 0.01) for 20 mg/day and -0.77 hours (95% CI -1.44 to -0.11) for 60 mg/day (p = 0.065; overall treatment effect). Clinical response occurred by the second week and was maintained throughout the study. Istradefylline was well tolerated. The common AEs were dyskinesia, nausea, dizziness, and hallucinations. CONCLUSIONS Istradefylline demonstrated a significant reduction in the percentage of awake time per day spent in the OFF state, which resulted in a clinically meaningful reduction in OFF time, without an increase in ON time with troublesome dyskinesia, and was well tolerated as adjunctive treatment to levodopa in Parkinson disease.

Abstract
The effect of steady-state istradefylline, an agent for Parkinson's disease with P-glycoprotein and CYP3A inhibitory activity, on the pharmacokinetics of atorvastatin and its metabolites was evaluated in healthy volunteers. A single 40-mg dose of atorvastatin was administered to 20 subjects. After a 4-day washout, subjects received a single 40-mg atorvastatin dose following 40 mg istradefylline (n=16) or placebo (n=4) daily for 14 days. Plasma samples collected for 96 hours after atorvastatin administration, alone and in combination, were analyzed for atorvastatin, orthohydroxy atorvastatin, and parahydroxy atorvastatin. Istradefylline increased atorvastatin C(max) (53%), AUC(0-infinity) (54%), and t((1/2)) (27%); and increased AUC(0-infinity) for orthohydroxy atorvastatin (18%), but had no significant effect on its C(max) or t((1/2)); and had minimal effect on parahydroxy atorvastatin AUC(0-infinity). The lack of inhibition by istradefylline on metabolite systemic exposure, combined with increased atorvastatin systemic exposure, suggests a predominant P-glycoprotein inhibitory effect of istradefylline.

Abstract
The majority of mosquito species require a blood meal to stimulate vitellogenesis and subsequent oviposition (anautogeny), but some autogenous individuals complete their first ovarian cycle without a blood meal. Autogeny may be facultative or obligatory. In this study, we selected for an autogenous strain in the Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus and examined an F(1) intercross population for quantitative trait loci (QTL) determining the autogeny trait as well as wing length as a proxy for body size. Using composite interval mapping, we identified four QTL for each trait and observed considerable overlap in genome positions between each QTL for autogeny (follicle size) and wing length. Most QTL were minor in magnitude, individually explaining <10% of the phenotypic variation. Alleles from the autogenous parent generally showed a dominance or overdominance effect on both phenotypes. Strong genetic and phenotypic correlations indicate that autogeny and wing length are determined by up to four clusters of tightly linked genes or the potential pleiotropic effects of single genes. Although females from the autogenous strain produced approximately fivefold more eggs following a blood meal than through autogeny, we suggest that the maintenance of alleles for autogeny in natural populations is likely due to balancing selection. Autogeny should be favored under conditions of limited host availability for blood feeding or increased defensive behavior by the host and adequate larval nutrition. Correlation between autogeny and body size may reflect an increased ability for larger females to accumulate sufficient nutrient reserves to support oogenesis without the requirement for a blood meal.

Abstract
The mosquito Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) is the primary global vector for dengue virus (DENV), yet considerable genetic variation exists among populations in terms of its competence to vector DENV. Variability in adult body size has also been observed among various mosquito populations and several studies have reported a relationship between body size and arbovirus dissemination, although most of these relied on artificially derived variation in body size. Here we examine the relationship between body size and disseminated DENV infection among 10 Ae. aegypti populations reared under optimum laboratory conditions. Body size variability was inferred from wing length measurements and DENV competence was evaluated as the proportion of individuals with disseminated infections following exposure to the dengue-2 JAM1409 strain. There were significant differences in mean wing lengths among populations (anova, F(9,22)= 7.10, P < 0.0001), ranging from 2.16 mm (Bangkok population) to 2.79 mm (MOYO-S [susceptible] population). We also observed significant differences among some populations in mean DENV infection rates (Waller-Duncan K-ratio t-test), ranging from 19.54% (MOYO-R [refractory] population) to 56.60% (MOYO-S population). However, we did not observe evidence for significant interactions between body size and DENV dissemination. We suggest that either the two traits are genetically independent or that our ability to detect interactions between them was limited by their respective inheritances as quantitative traits.

Abstract
Relata-se a disseminação da infeção pelo vírus da doença de Aujeszky (VDA) a partir da comercialização de reprodutores suínos oriundos de duas granjas de reprodutores suídeos certificada (GRSC) que tiveram surto da DA. Após a confirmação do diagnóstico de DA, os suínos comercializados 37 a 45 dias anteriores aos surtos foram recolhidos, submetidos ao exame sorológico para o VDA e enviados ao abate. Nos rebanhos-destino foram realizados exames sorológicos para o VDA 17 a 37 dias após o recolhimento, naqueles que estavam lojados nas baias vizinhas àquelas onde haviam sido alojados os suínos comprados; seis meses mais tarde, foi realizada outra sorologia por amostragem dos reprodutores. No total, 52 rebanhos compraram suínos das duas granjas, e, destes, 37 (69,8%) receberam, pelo menos, um animal com sorologia positiva para o VDA. Somente sete (18,9%) deles apresentaram sorologia positiva para o VDA, e em 30 (81,1%), não houve indícios de disseminação da infecção. A contaminação pelo VDA de granjas GRSC representa enorme potencial para a disseminação da infecção, por meio do comércio de suínos de reposição. A rastreabilidade dos animais comercializados em um período anterior ao diagnóstico, com imediata remoção dos lotes de suínos dos rebanhos-destino, evitou a disseminação da infecção.

Abstract
Plasma metabolite concentrations and activities of enzymes related to energy metabolism in plasma, peripheral leukocytes and liver of pregnant Romney ewes with restricted feeding were measured to assess those metabolites and enzymes as indicators for evaluating metabolic conditions in the ewes. The body weights and plasma lactate concentrations of the low-feeding ewes (about 1.0 times maintenance) were significantly lower than those of the high-feeding ewes (about 1.5 times maintenance). There were no significant differences in plasma protein, glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, pyruvate and immunoreactive insulin concentrations and plasma and leukocyte enzyme activities between both groups. Hepatic malate dehydrogenase activities were significantly higher and hexokinase activities were significantly lower in the low-feeding ewes than in the high-feeding ewes. Restricted feeding could maintain pregnancy and some plasma metabolites and peripheral leukocyte enzymes may be useful indicators for evaluating metabolic changes in ewes.

Abstract
The evolution of late season reproductive arrest (diapause) among female Culex pipiens mosquitoes allows them to overwinter in temperate climates, while females of the sibling species Culex quinquefasciatus do not exhibit the diapause phenotype. We present results for quantitative trait loci (QTL) analyses of two independent segregating populations derived from crosses between C. pipiens and C. quinquefasciatus. QTL for diapause and three life history traits were identified and compared for genome positions and gene effects. Using a combination of composite interval mapping, single-marker analysis and all possible subsets regression, we identified multiple QTL for each trait, totalling 14 and 17 QTL for each population, respectively. Individual QTL across traits often mapped to similar genome locations, suggesting these traits may be controlled in part by genes with pleiotropic effects or multiple tightly linked genes. The majority of QTL were intermediate in magnitude in that they explained 10-25% of the phenotypic variation. The majority of QTL showed overdominance effects. We suggest that this could impact natural populations, as increased heterosis across hybrid zones may allow populations to adapt to environmental conditions via stabilizing selection, and yet maintain species identity outside these regions because of strong morphological integration, wherein related traits evolve as an integrated unit.

Abstract
Metabolite and immunoreactive insulin (IRI) concentrations, energy metabolism related enzymes activities and peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) populations were measured in blood of pregnant Angus heifers with differing liveweight change profiles (gaining or losing), in New Zealand to investigate the meanings of those parameters in the restricted feeding beef heifers. Beef heifers losing liveweight (-412 g/day) showed significantly lower concentrations of plasma IRI, and higher concentrations of plasma free fatty acid (FFA) than heifers gaining liveweight (483 g/day). The cytosolic and mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase (MDH) activities and MDH/lactate dehydrogenase (M/L) ratio in leukocytes of the liveweight losing heifers were significantly higher than those the liveweight gaining heifers. Percentages of cluster of differentiation (CD) 3 positive cells and natural killer (NK) cells in PBMC decreased significantly in the liveweight losing heifers compared to those in the liveweight gaining heifers. Plasma IRI and FFA concentrations, leukocyte cytosolic and mitochondrial MDH activities and CD3 positive and NK cell populations may be useful markers to evaluate metabolic conditions and immunity in the restricted feeding beef heifers.

Abstract
Concentrations of metabolites and immunoreactive insulin (IRI) and activities of enzymes related to energy metabolism were measured in plasma of Korean and Japanese beef cattle, which were raised by the indoor feeding system programmed to feed larger amount of roughage in their growing periods and larger amount of concentrate diet in their finishing periods (Japanese feeding system), and grazing New Zealand beef cattle. By the Japanese beef grading system, Korean and Japanese beef cattle showed high beef quality score, average grade 3.3 and 3.6, respectively. The plasma free fatty acid and lactate concentrations and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities in Korean beef cattle were significantly higher than those in Japanese beef cattle. The plasma lactate concentration in Korean beef cattle was 8.40 mmol/l, which was similar to the values observed in lactic acidosis. The higher activities of plasma LDH, MDH and AST may indicate slight liver damage by slightly acidotic conditions in Korean beef cattle. New Zealand beef cattle fed on pasture which they harvest by grazing showed significantly lower plasma glucose, cholesterol, lactate and IRI concentrations and enzyme activities than those in Korean and Japanese beef cattle fed on larger amount of concentrate diets. Plasma metabolite concentrations and energy metabolism-related enzyme activities may be good indicators for evaluating metabolic conditions of beef cattle raised by different feeding systems.

Abstract
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is an aggressive form of B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, with a mean survival of only 3-5 years and suboptimal therapeutic options. MCL is characterized by a balanced translocation t(11;14)(q13;q32), resulting in overexpression of cyclin D1, a G(1) cyclin regulated by the PI3K/Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway. As improved therapy for MCL is required and the mTOR pathway may be involved in its pathophysiology, the antiproliferative effects of RAD001 (everolimus), an mTOR inhibitor, against three MCL cell lines were investigated. As a single agent, RAD001 inhibited proliferation in MCL cell lines (Jeko1, SP49 and NCEB1) approximately 40-65% compared to diluent control cells. This was associated with G(1) cell-cycle arrest and reduced phosphorylation of the mTOR downstream target, 4E-BP1. Furthermore, combination drug studies revealed predominantly synergistic cytotoxicity with RAD001 and several secondary agents, including doxorubicin, vincristine or rituximab (components of the standard MCL regimen), as well as paclitaxel, vorinostat and bortezomib. These data indicate that single agent RAD001 is effective in inhibiting growth of MCL cells in vitro and combination studies with secondary agents further demonstrate synergistic cytotoxicity. Thus, these findings support future clinical studies of RAD001 in the treatment of MCL.

Abstract
Recent studies indicate that the deposition of beta-amyloid (Abeta) is related in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the underlying mechanism is still not clear. The abnormal interactions of Abeta with metal ions such as copper are implicated in the process of Abeta deposition and oxidative stress in AD brains. In the present study, we established a new AD model, using which we found that copper triggered the Abeta neurotoxicity in SH-SY5Y cells overexpressing the Swedish mutant form of human APP (APPsw) in a concentration dependent manner. Fermented papaya preparation (FPP) has shown high free radical scavenging ability in vivo and in vitro. FPP post-treatment increased cell viability and decreased the intracellular [Ca2+]i, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation such as hydroxyl free radical and superoxide anion and nitric oxide (NO) accumulation in the cell. Our results also show that FPP prevents the cell apoptosis through bax/bcl-2 sensitive pathway.
