Diffusion Tensor Imaging in Movement Disorders: Review of Major Patterns and Correlation with Normal Brainstem/cerebellar White Matter

The authors reviewed the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and tractography (DTT) of the normal brainstem and cerebellar white matter in normal volunteers, correlating it with structural magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and DTI data obtained in patients evaluated in our institution with movement disorders, including multisystem atrophy (MSA), spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA), progressive supra-nuclear palsy (PSP) and idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). DTI and tractography data demonstrated major white-matter fibers within the brain stem and cerebellum, including cortico-spinal tracts, transverse pontine fibers, medial lemniscus and cerebellar peduncles. Visualization of selective degeneration of these individual fibre tracts with DTI, in our cases, added qualitative data to the differential diagnosis of movement disorders.

Absorber Films of Antimony Chalcogenides via Chemical Deposition for Photovoltaic Application

Antimony sulfide thin films (300 nm) have been deposited on glass substrates at 1–10°C from chemical bath. When heated these become crystalline and photoconductive with optical band gap (direct) of 1.7 eV. Thin films formed from chemical baths containing SbCl3 and sodium selenosulfate are of mixed phase Sb2O3/Sb2Se3, which when heated in the presence of Se-vapor converts to single phase Sb2Se3 film with optical band gap of 1.1 eV. Such films possess dark conductivity of 10-8 ohm-1cm-1 and show photosensitivity of two orders. Reaction of Sb2S3-CuS in nitrogen at 400°C produces crystalline, photoconductive p-type CuSbS2 with optical band gap (direct) of 1.5 eV. By controlling the deposition and heating condition, (i)Sb2S3-(p)CuSbS2 layer is formed, which is utilized in a photovoltaic structure, (n)CdS:In-(i)Sb2S3-(p)CuSbS2, with a Voc of 345 mV and Jsc 0.18 mA/cm2 under 1 kW m-2 tungsten halogen illumination. In the case of a structure, CdS:Cl-Sb2S3-Cu2-xSe, Voc of 350 mV and Jsc of 0.5 mA/cm2 are observed.

Carbapenem-non-susceptible Enterobacteriaceae in Europe: conclusions from a meeting of national experts

The emergence and global spread of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae is of great concern to health services worldwide. These bacteria are often resistant to all beta-lactam antibiotics and frequently co-resistant to most other antibiotics, leaving very few treatment options. The epidemiology is compounded by the diversity of carbapenem-hydrolysing enzymes and the ability of their genes to spread between different bacterial species. Difficulties are also encountered by laboratories when trying to detect carbapenemase production during routine diagnostic procedures due to an often heterogeneous expression of resistance. Some of the resistance genes are associated with successful clonal lineages which have a selective advantage in those hospitals where antimicrobial use is high and opportunities for transmission exist; others are more often associated with transmissible plasmids. A genetically distinct strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae sequence type (ST) 258 harbouring the K. pneumoniae carbapenemases (KPC) has been causing epidemics of national and international proportions. It follows the pathways of patient referrals, causing hospital outbreaks along the way. Simultaneously, diverse strains harbouring New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase (NDM-1) are repeatedly being imported into Europe, commonly via patients with prior medical exposure in the Indian subcontinent. Since the nature and scale of carbapenem-non-susceptible Entrobacteriaceae as a threat to hospital patients in Europe remains unclear, a consultation of experts from 31 countries set out to identify the gaps in diagnostic and response capacity, to index the magnitude of carbapenem-non-susceptibility across Europe using a novel five-level staging system, and to provide elements of a strategy to combat this public health issue in a concerted manner.

[Surgical approach to sialorrhea: a casuistic review and evaluation of grade of satisfaction]

INTRODUCTION

Drooling or sialorrhea is the involuntary, passive spillage of saliva from the mouth due to inability to handle oral secretions. The medical, psychosocial and economic impact of drooling is underestimated. Treatment should always involve a multidisciplinary team and can include a medical or surgical approach. Various surgical techniques are used to manage drooling; re-routing of the salivary ducts is one of the preferred methods in more significant situations.

OBJECTIVES

To analyze retrospectively the group of children submitted to surgical correction of drooling in São Teotónio's Hospital and evaluate the clinical and caregiver satisfaction outcomes.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

We analyse the clinical process of children submitted to surgical correction of drooling. Satisfaction scores were obtained by phone interview.

RESULTS

Between January of 2003 and June of 2009, 16 child were submitted to surgical intervention for drooling, with a total of 17 surgeries. Most of them were males and have ages between 3 and 23 years, with the majority with ages between 10 and 15 years. All of them suffered from neurologic disease, mainly cerebral palsy. The majority were hospitalised for I to 2 days and no surgical complications were observed. In a significant percentage, good results were obtained and in 3 cases total resolution of drooling were reported. In about 44% of caregivers stayed very happy with the results of surgery.

CONCLUSIONS

Drooling is an important comorbility in child with neuro-muscular disease and is treatment can never be underestimated. By the analyses of the results of our surgical center, the re-routing of salivary ducts method reveals to be effective.

The minimum Euclidean distance principle applied to improve the modulation diffraction efficiency in digitally controlled spatial light modulators

Digital addressing of the electrical signal in spatial light modulators, as it is the case in present liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) displays, may lead to temporal phase fluctuations in the optical beam. In diffractive optics applications a reduction in the modulation diffraction efficiency may be expected. Experimental work is done characterizing the fluctuations amplitude and phase depth for three different digital addressing sequences. We propose a diffractive model to evaluate the modulation diffraction efficiency of phase diffractive optical elements (DOEs) in the presence of phase fluctuations. Best results are obtained for the most stable electrical sequence even though its phase depth is as small as 280 degrees . The results show good agreement with the numerical calculation given by the model.

Descending deep neck infection in a liver transplant patient

Descending deep neck space infections are serious conditions that appear as a complication of cervical and odontogenic infections. Infecting bacteria descend into the mediastinum causing systemic toxicity and septic shock. Liver transplant patients are at increased risk of developing life-threatening infections, but reports about descending deep neck space infections in these patients are scarce. Here, we report a case of deep neck infection resulting in mediastinitis in a liver transplant patient. Streptococcus anginosus was isolated in blood cultures.

3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A lyase deficiency: initial presentation in a young adult

3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) lyase deficiency is a rare inborn error affecting leucine catabolism and ketogenesis, usually presenting in the neonatal period. Late forms of the disease have been detected in infancy and childhood, but not in adults. We report a case of HMG-CoA lyase deficiency with initial presentation in a 29-year-old adult with no prior history of the disease, which to our knowledge is the first case described with presentation at this age.

Haemophilus influenzae serotype b conjugate vaccine failure in twelve countries with established national childhood immunization programmes

The present study describes the clinical and immunological features of children with Hib vaccine failure, who were identified through national surveillance between 1996 and 2001 in Europe, Israel and Australia. True vaccine failure was defined as invasive Hib disease occurring ≥2 weeks after one dose, given after the first birthday, or ≥1 week after ≥2 doses, given at <1 year of age. Of the 423 cases (representing 0.2 cases per 100,000 child-years at risk) reported, 330 (78%) had received three doses in the first year of life and developed disease at a median age of 28 months. Of the remaining 93, 48 had received two doses in infancy, 34 had received four doses including a booster, and 11 had received a single dose after 12 months of age. These children developed disease at a median age of 12, 33 and 71 months, respectively. In total, 47 out of 258 children (18%) with available information had an underlying medical problem (including prematurity) and 53 out of 161 (33%) had immunoglobulin deficiency. Convalescent Hib antibody concentrations were above the putative protective concentration of 1.0 mg/L in 147/194 (76%) children; low concentrations were associated with both the presence of an underlying medical problem and young age at the time of Hib disease. Almost all children who received an additional vaccine dose developed antibodies at protective concentrations. Thus, Hib vaccine failure is rare, but can occur with any immunization schedule. Children with Hib vaccine failure should have immunoglobulin and convalescent Hib antibody concentrations measured after infection and receive additional vaccination, if required.

Influence of the incident angle in the performance of liquid crystal on silicon displays

In this paper we experimentally analyze the performance of a twisted nematic liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) display as a function of the angle of incidence of the incoming beam. These are reflective displays that can be configured to produce amplitude or phase modulation by properly aligning external polarization elements. But we demonstrate that the incident angle plays an important role in the selection of the polarization configuration. We performed a Mueller matrix polarimetric analysis of the display that demonstrates that the recently reported depolarization effect observed in this type of displays is also dependant on the incident angle.

Serum levels of keratin-18 fragments [tissue polypeptide-specific antigen (TPS)] are correlated with hepatocyte apoptosis in alcoholic hepatitis

Apoptosis is a major feature in alcoholic hepatitis. During apoptosis, the M30 neoepitope becomes exposed after keratin-18 cleavage. The tissue polypeptide-specific antigen (TPS) is a keratin-18 fragment that is routinely used as a tumor marker. Serum TPS levels are increased in patients with alcoholic hepatitis. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible relationship of TPS levels with hepatocyte apoptosis in alcoholic hepatitis. Thirty-one patients with alcoholic hepatitis and 22 with fatty liver were included. Hepatocyte apoptosis was evaluated by M30 immunostaining. Serum TPS levels were measured by a commercial immunoassay. The apoptotic score was higher in patients with alcoholic hepatitis than in patients with fatty liver. There was a significant correlation between the apoptotic score and TPS levels. The correlation of the apoptotic score with TPS levels was stronger than with standard liver tests. Serum TPS may be a marker of apoptosis in alcoholic hepatitis.

Time fluctuations of the phase modulation in a liquid crystal on silicon display: characterization and effects in diffractive optics

In this paper we provide evidence of the temporal fluctuations of the phase modulation property of a liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) display, and we analyze its effect when the device is used for displaying a diffractive optical element. We use a commercial twisted nematic LCoS display configured to produce a phase-only modulation, and we provide time resolved measurements of the diffraction efficiency that show rapid fluctuations of the phase modulation, in the millisecond order. We analyze how these fluctuations have to be considered in two typical methods for the characterization of the phase modulation: two beam interference and diffraction from a binary grating. We finally provide experimental results on the use of this device for displaying a computer generated hologram. A reduction of the modulation diffraction efficiency results from the phase modulation fluctuation.

Combined Mueller and Jones matrix method for the evaluation of the complex modulation in a liquid-crystal-on-silicon display

We apply the polar decomposition of the Mueller matrix describing a liquid-crystal-on-silicon display to identify the diattenuator, depolarizer, and retarder contributions as a function of the gray level. The retarder contribution is expressed in terms of the equivalent Jones matrix to apply previous techniques to evaluate the phase modulation. This allows searching for optimized polarization configurations for phase- or amplitude-only modulation responses. We present results for lambda=633 nm showing a phase-only modulation up to 2 pi rad and flat intensity modulation.

Mueller-Stokes characterization and optimization of a liquid crystal on silicon display showing depolarization

In this paper we characterize the polarimetric properties of a liquid crystal on silicon display (LCoS), including depolarization and diattenuation which are usually not considered when applying the LCoS in diffractive or adaptive optics. On one hand, we have found that the LCoS generates a certain degree (that can be larger than a 10%) of depolarized light, which depends on the addressed gray level and on the incident state of polarization (SOP), and can not be ignored in the above mentioned applications. The main origin of the depolarized light is related with temporal fluctuations of the SOP of the light reflected by the LCoS. The Mueller matrix of the LCoS is measured as a function of the gray level, which enables for a numerical optimization of the intensity modulation configurations. In particular we look for maximum intensity contrast modulation or for constant intensity modulation. By means of a heuristic approach we show that, using elliptically polarized light, amplitude-mostly or phase-mostly modulation can be obtained at a wavelength of 633 nm.

Methylmalonic acidaemia: examination of genotype and biochemical data in 32 patients belonging to mut, cblA or cblB complementation group

Methylmalonic acidaemia (MMA) is a genetic disorder caused by defects in methylmalonyl-CoA mutase or in any of the different proteins involved in the synthesis of adenosylcobalamin. The aim of this work was to examine the biochemical and clinical phenotype of 32 MMA patients according to their genotype, and to study the mutant mRNA stability by real-time PCR analysis. Using cellular and biochemical methods, we classified our patient cohort as having the MMA forms mut (n = 19), cblA (n = 9) and cblB (n = 4). All the mut (0) and some of the cblB patients had the most severe clinical and biochemical manifestations, displaying non-inducible propionate incorporation in the presence of hydroxocobalamin (OHCbl) in vitro and high plasma odd-numbered long-chain fatty acid (OLCFA) concentrations under dietary therapy. In contrast, mut (-) and cblA patients exhibited a milder phenotype with propionate incorporation enhanced by OHCbl and normal OLCFA levels under dietary therapy. No missense mutations identified in the MUT gene, including mut (0) and mut (-) changes, affected mRNA stability. A new sequence variation (c.562G>C) in the MMAA gene was identified. Most of the cblA patients carried premature termination codons (PTC) in both alleles. Interestingly, the transcripts containing the PTC mutations were insensitive to nonsense-mediated decay (NMD).

Serum levels of immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM) in a general adult population and their relationship with alcohol consumption, smoking and common metabolic abnormalities

The present study investigated serum immunoglobulin (Ig) concentrations in relation to demographic factors, common habits (alcohol consumption and smoking) and metabolic abnormalities in an adult population-based survey including 460 individuals. Serum levels of interleukin (IL)-6, a marker of inflammation, were also determined. After adjusting for confounders, male sex was associated positively with IgA levels and negatively with IgM levels. Age was associated positively with IgA and IgG levels. Smoking was associated negatively with IgG levels. Heavy drinking was associated positively with IgA levels. Metabolic abnormalities (obesity and metabolic syndrome) were associated positively with IgA levels. Abdominal obesity and hypertriglyceridaemia were the components of metabolic syndrome associated most strongly with serum IgA. Heavy drinkers with metabolic syndrome showed particularly high serum IgA levels. Serum IL-6 levels were correlated positively with IgA and IgG concentrations. It is concluded that sex, age, alcohol consumption, smoking and common metabolic abnormalities should be taken into account when interpreting serum levels of IgA, IgG and IgM.

Sensitization to cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants in relation to alcohol consumption

BACKGROUND

Alcohol consumption is associated with increased serum IgE of unknown specificity.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the prevalence of specific IgE to cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants (CCDs) in adults, and its relation to alcohol consumption.

METHODS

Population-based survey of 457 adults (218 abstainers, 195 light-to-moderate drinkers, 44 heavy drinkers). Specific IgE determinations included a CCD (MUXF(3), the N-glycan of bromelain), pollens (Lolium perenne and Olea europaea), Hymenoptera venoms (Apis mellifera and Vespula spp.), and a mite (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus). We replicated these studies in an additional sample of alcoholics (n=138). Inhibition assays were performed in selected cases.

RESULTS

In the general population, 5.6% of individuals (95% confidence interval 3.5-7.6%) showed positive (>/=0.35 kU/L) CCD-specific IgE. The levels of CCD-specific IgE were particularly high in heavy drinkers, who also showed a high prevalence of positive IgE to pollens and Hymenoptera venoms, doubling (at least) the prevalence found in alcohol abstainers and light-to-moderate drinkers. The presence of IgE to pollens and Hymenoptera venoms was closely correlated with the presence of CCD-specific IgE. These features were confirmed in the additional sample of alcoholics. Inhibition studies indicated a role of CCD interference in IgE positivity to pollen and Hymenoptera allergens in alcoholics.

CONCLUSIONS

CCD-specific IgE is prevalent in heavy drinkers, and is associated with positive IgE to pollens and Hymenoptera venoms. Specific IgE results should be interpreted with caution in heavy drinkers.

Dépistage des entérocoques résistants aux glycopeptides: six ans d'étude dans trois services de réanimation au CHU de Montpellier

AIM OF THE STUDY

The aim of this study was to evaluate the rate of glycopeptides-resistant enterococci (GRE) fecal carriage (species and resistance determinants). Strains isolated between 1999 and 2005 during systematic screening for multiresistant bacteria in patients hospitalized in 3 intensive care units (ICU) of the University Hospital of Montpellier were studied.

METHODS

The systematic screening was weekly performed. Rectal swabs were cultured on D-Coccosel agar medium containing 4 mg/l vancomycin and MICs for vancomycin and teicoplanin were determined by E-test. Strains were subjected to both phenotypic and genotypic identification and vanA, vanB and vanC genes were detected by PCR.

RESULTS

We analyzed 13003 samples for 5113 patients. Among them, 401 (7.84%) patients were GRE carriers with 280 Enterococcus gallinarum (vanC(1)), 102 Enterococcus casseliflavus-flavescens (vanC(2)-C(3)), 5 Enterococcus faecalis (3 vanA, 2 vanB), and 14 Enterococcus faecium (10 vanA, 4 vanB). A unique case of cross contamination between two patients was observed. During the same time, only one strain of GRE was isolated during an infectious process in another unit. Carriage rate of E. faecium and E. faecalis vanA or vanB was 0.37%: 68.4, 21 and 10.6% in the gastrointestinal, in the polyvalent and the respiratory ICU, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Our results were in agreement with national data showing a relatively low GRE fecal carriage rate in ICUs, E. faecium vanA being the mainly encountered GRE. Since 2004, GRE detection is increasingly reported in France and an emerging E. faecium vanA clone has been identified during outbreaks. In contrast, only one E. faecium vanB strain has been isolated in our institution since this date and a unique strain of E. faecalis vanA was isolated during an infectious process since 1999. These data underlined the efficacy of transmission prevention measures established when GRE are identified.

[Present status of psychosurgery in Spain]

In order to know the present activity of psychosurgery in Spain, and the opinion of neurosurgeons relative to it, a survey was designed and applied to all active neurosurgeons in our country. We obtained data from at least one neurosurgeon from the 74 neurosurgical centers in Spain (response rate= 100%). Only 6 neurosurgeons performed psychosurgical interventions. In total, 121 psychosurgeries were performed between 1999 and 2003, 75.7% of them in private centers. The most frequent indication is obsessive-compulsive disorder and the most frequent technique is anterior capsulotomy, although techniques and indications differ among the practising neurosurgeons. Those not performing them cite lack of patient referral (54.4%) or unexperience (36.8%) as the causes. A suspected lack of efficacy or the possible adverse effects are seldom expressed. The possibility of using deep brain stimulation for psychiatric indications, as well as the experience of some neurosurgeons and the favorable opinion of the rest, might increase the number of operations in our country.

Structural and functional characterization of a recombinant sticholysin I (rSt I) from the sea anemone Stichodactyla helianthus

Sticholysins I and II (Sts I and II) are two potent cytolysins from the sea anemone Stichodactyla helianthus. These isoforms present 13 substitutions, with three non-conservative located at the N-terminus. St II is considerably more hemolytic than St I in human red blood cells, a result explained by the smaller number of negatively charged groups present at St II's N-terminus. In the present work, we have obtained a recombinant St I (rSt I), differing from the wild type in a single amino acid residue (E16Q). This pseudo-wild type is structurally similar to St I and shows a similar capacity to interact with and form pores in model membranes. This was assessed by the intrinsic fluorescence increase in the presence of liposomes, their adsorption to bilayers (measured by SPR), their concentration at the air-water interface, their interaction with lipid monolayers and their capacity to promote the release of carboxyfluorescein entrapped in liposomes. In spite of these similarities, rSt I presents a larger hemolytic activity in human red blood cells than St I, being intermediate in activity between Sts I and II. The results obtained in the present work emphasize that even the change of one single E by Q at the N-terminal segment may modify the toxin HA and show that this functional property is the most sensitive to subtle changes in the protein primary structure.

Characterization of latex-antineoplastic drug complexes by differential scanning calorimetry and microphotography

Choline kinase inhibitors have recently been identified as potentially useful antitumoral agents. Here we determine the best conditions for obtaining drug-polymer complexes with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and JCR791B, a new drug representing a significant advance in the development of new molecules to inhibit tumour proliferation. As polymers we used the cellulose derivatives Aquacoat and Aquateric. The variables in the adsorption process measured were time to adsorbent-adsorbate equilibrium, pH and concentration. The drug-polymer complexes were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and microphotography. Our results show that adsorption of 5-FU and JCR was similar with both polymers although slightly greater with Aquacoat. The chemical structure of the drug and its solubility in water and oil are fundamental characteristics that determine the performance of polymers as drug carriers able to provide controlled release.

Does multiorgan donation influence survival in heart transplantation?

Current heart transplant survival in Spain at 1, 5, and 10 years is 80%, 70%, and 60%, respectively. Our objective was to establish how donor type affects survival in heart transplantation.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This was a retrospective study of heart transplant recipients from 102 donors, divided into three types: (a) heart-liver-kidney donors (group I); (b) heart-liver-kidney-lung donors (group II); and (c) heart-liver-kidney-lung-pancreas donors (group III). We excluded retransplantations, pediatric transplantations, and cardiopulmonary transplantations. The outcome variable was the actuarial survival by type of donation. Statistical analysis was performed for event-free survival based on the Kaplan-Meier method (log-rank test).

RESULTS

Groups I, II, and III included 63, 26, and 13 donors, respectively. The survival curves showed similar values for all three groups (P > .05).

CONCLUSIONS

The different combinations of multiorgan donation do not entail a poorer prognosis in terms of cardiac transplant patient survival.

Depth of focus increase by multiplexing programmable diffractive lenses

A combination of several diffractive lenses written onto a single programmable liquid crystal display (LCD) is proposed for increasing the Depth of Focus (DOF) of the imaging system as a whole. The lenses are spatially multiplexed in a random scheme onto the LCD. The axial irradiance distribution produced by each lens overlaps with the next one producing an extended focal depth. To compare the image quality of the multiplexed lenses, the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) is calculated. Finally we obtain the experimental Point Spread Functions (PSF) for these multiplexed lenses and experimental results in which an extended object is illuminated under spatially incoherent monochromatic light. We compare the images obtained in the focal plane and in some defocused planes with the single lens and with three multiplexed lenses. The experimental results confirm that the multiplexed lenses produce a high increase in the depth of focus.

Study on Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients With Advanced Heart Failure Before and After Transplantation

Our objective was to evaluate health-related quality of life in patients with advanced heart failure on the waiting list for a heart transplant.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study was performed using the EUROQOL-5D questionnaire (EQ-5D) on 38 patients (age: 53 +/- 2 years, 82% men) who were analyzed consecutively during the pretransplant period, as well as at 3, 6, and 12 months after transplantation. We excluded pediatric transplants, retransplantations, heart and lung transplantation, and patients scoring below 17 points on the Folstein's Cognitive Mini-Examination. The studied variables included the five dimensions of the EQ-5D test: mobility, self-care, daily activities, pain-discomfort, anxiety and depression; a visual analog scale from 0 to 100; and perception of health status. Statistics included analysis of variance and chi-square tests. Significance was set at P < .05.

RESULTS

There were significant differences in all tested parameters. The worst values were observed prior to transplantation, with a significant improvement at 3 months.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with heart failure showed a significant impairment in health-related quality of life before transplantation. The improvement in health-related quality of life was significant and rapidly evident in the posttransplantation period. The most affected dimensions were activities of daily living and pain-discomfort. All dimensions became stable at 3 months, except for anxiety and depression. At 6 to 12 months, a plateau was reached in the feelings of well-being.

Study of the Evolution of the Clinical Profile of Heart Donors

Certain characteristics of the donor have implications for the early and late survival of transplants. The trends show a progressive worsening in the clinical profile of heart donors. Our objective was to analyze changes in the clinical characteristics of donors.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This retrospective study of 396 donors was divided into three periods: 1990 to 1994, 1995 to 1999, and 2000 to 2004. We excluded combination transplantations, retransplantations, and pediatric transplantations. The donor variables included age, cause of death, cardiorespiratory arrest, ICU stay, and ischemia time. Statistical analysis used ANOVA, Kruskall-Wallis, and Chi square test, with significance set at P < .05.

RESULTS

Differences were found in age (1990-1994: 27 +/- 1, 1995-1999: 29 +/- 1, 2000- 2004: 34 +/- 1 years; P = .0001), ischemia time (1990-1994: 119 +/- 6, 1995-1999: 145 +/- 4, 2000-2004: 156 +/- 4 minutes; P = .0001), and death from brain hemorrhage (1990-1994: 28%, 1995-1999: 31%, 2000-2004: 43%; P = .031).

CONCLUSIONS

There were differences in the clinical characteristics of the donors in the study periods. The age of the donor, stroke-related deaths, and ischemia time have increased significantly in recent years.

Urogenital papilla feminization in male Pomatoschistus minutus from two estuaries in northwestern Iberian Peninsula

Recently, male urogenital papilla feminization (UGPF) in the sand goby Pomatoschistus minutus was reported in several UK estuaries with high levels of estrogenic compounds. The fact that this species is also common in southern European estuaries, together with its life-cycle characteristics, prompted us to investigate P. minutus UGPF in the northwestern of Iberian Peninsula. Specimens of P. minutus were periodically sampled during 2004 at several locations in two estuaries (Minho and Lima). Evidence for UGPF was recorded in both estuaries, the highest incidence being observed in the Lima estuary (50%). Estrogen levels (17beta-estradiol and estrone) above 100 pg/l were observed in both estuaries, the higher concentrations being found in the Lima estuary. Overall, the results suggest a relationship between the feminization of male P. minutus urogenital papilla and the presence of estrogenic compounds. In the future, more in-depth studies are required in order to use P. minutus as a sentinel species for estrogenic compound monitoring in estuaries.

Improvements for determining the modulation transfer function of charge-coupled devices by the speckle method

We present and evaluate two corrections applicable in determining the modulation transfer function (MTF) of a charge-coupled device (CCD) by the speckle method that minimize its uncertainty: one for the low frequency region and another for the high frequency region. The correction at the low-spatial-frequency region enables attenuation of the high power-spectral-density values that arise from the field and CCD response non-uniformities. In the high-spatial-frequency region the results show that the distance between the CCD and the aperture is critical and significantly influences the MTF; a variation of 1 mm in the distance can cause a root-mean-square error in the MTF higher than 10%. We propose a simple correction that minimizes the experimental error committed in positioning the CCD and that diminishes the error to 0.43%.
