Abstract
PURPOSE Terminal myelocystocele (TMC) is thought to be caused by a misstep during secondary neurulation. However, due to the paucity of data on secondary neurulation and the rarity of TMC, proofs of this pathogenetic mechanism are unavailable. Based on a previous observation that TMC resembles a step of secondary neurulation in chick, a closer look was taken at secondary neurulation of chick embryos focusing on the cerebrospinal fluid-filled distal neural tube (terminal balloon). METHODS Chick embryos at Hamburger and Hamilton (H-H) stages of 28, 30, 33, 35, 37, and 40 were harvested. Hematoxying-eosin staining, additional immunohistochemistry (laminin, cytokeratin, nestin), and scanning electron microscopy were performed. RESULTS In H-H stages 28 to 30, after merging of the lumina of the primary and secondary neural tubes, the caudal end of the confluent tube dilates into a balloon-like structure (terminal balloon). As the proximal tube progressively becomes narrower, the terminal balloon dilates even further, and its wall fuses with the surface ectoderm (H-H stage 33). Later in H-H stages 35 to 40, the terminal balloon shrinks and becomes detached from the surface ectoderm and ultimately disappears, as the proximal lumen of the secondary neural tube continues to collapse. CONCLUSION A dilated balloon doubtlessly exists in the terminal secondary neural tube in chick embryos, and its subsequent disappearance occurs in a variable time course and sequence. Arrest of apoptosis resulting in failure of detachment of the terminal balloon from the surface ectoderm may well be the basis for human TMC.

Abstract
We evaluated the effects of a prolonged inspiratory time on gas exchange in subjects undergoing one-lung ventilation for thoracic surgery. One hundred patients were randomly assigned to Group I:E = 1:2 or Group I:E = 1:1. Arterial blood gas analysis and respiratory mechanics measurements were performed 10 min after anaesthesia induction, 30 and 60 min after initiation of one-lung ventilation, and 15 min after restoration of conventional two-lung ventilation. The mean (SD) ratio of the partial pressure of arterial oxygen to fraction of inspired oxygen after 60 min of one-lung ventilation was significantly lower in Group I:E = 1:2 compared with Group I:E = 1:1 (27.7 (13.2) kPa vs 35.2 (22.1) kPa, respectively, p = 0.043). Mean (SD) physiological dead space-to-tidal volume ratio after 60 min of one-lung ventilation was significantly higher in Group I:E = 1:2 compared with Group I:E = 1:1 (0.46 (0.04) vs 0.43 (0.04), respectively, p = 0.008). Median (IQR [range]) peak inspiratory pressure was higher in Group I:E = 1:2 compared with Group I:E = 1:1 after 60 min of one-lung ventilation (23 (22-25 [18-29]) cmH2O vs 20 (18-21 [16-27]) cmH2O, respectively, p < 0.001) and median (IQR [range]) mean airway pressure was lower in Group I:E = 1:2 compared with Group I:E = 1:1 (10 (8-11 [5-15]) cmH2O vs 11 (10-13 [5-16]) cmH2O, respectively, p < 0.001). We conclude that, compared with an I:E ratio of 1:2, an I:E ratio of 1:1 resulted in a modest improvement in oxygenation and decreased shunt fraction during one-lung ventilation.

Abstract
The Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2 cathode thin films were deposited on planar, hemisphere, linked hemisphere, and isolated hemisphere structured Pt current collector thin films to investigate the effect of 3-dimensional (3-D) structure for the electrochemical properties of active cathode thin films. The films of linked hemisphere structure shows the highest initial discharge capacity of 140 microA h/cm2-microm which is better than those of planar (62 microA h/cm2-microm), hemisphere (94.6 microA h/cm2-microm), and isolated hemisphere (135 microA h/cm2-microm) films due to increase of surface area for cathode thin films. Linked hemisphere shows the biggest capacity and the best retention rate because 6 nanobridges of each hemisphere bring strong connection.

Abstract
Indium zinc oxide (IZO) films were deposited on glass substrate at room temperature using off-axis RF sputtering-continuous composition spread (CCS) system. The full range composition of IZO films were controlled by the deposition rate and thickness profiles of In2O3 and ZnO target. The structural, electrical and optical properties of IZO thin films were measured as functions of position. IZO thin film had the lowest resistivity and highest carrier concentration at the position of 15 mm (5.02 x 10(-4) omega cm, 3.9 x 10(20)/cm3). And IZO thin film had high transmittance in visible region at measured all positions. This study has investigated to explore the new composition of IZO films using CCS system.

The discovery of neural stem cells offers paradigm shift in brain tumor research. In neuro-oncology, the biology of neural stem cells has been pursued in two ways: as cancer stem cells to understand the origin and maintenance of brain tumors and as a potential cell-based vehicle for gene therapy. In addition to neural stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been reported to possess tumor-tropic migratory capacities. However, there is scanty data on migratory capacity of MSC toward brain tumor initiating cells (BTICs). This study focuses on investigating the ability of human adipose tissue derived MSCs (hAT-MSCs) to target BTICs and their cross-talk in the microenvironment.
BTICs were isolated from three different kinds of brain tumors (medulloblastoma, atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor (ATRT), glioblastoma). The migration capacities of hAT-MSCs toward BTICs were examined both in vitro transwell assay and in vivo bioluminescence imaging analysis. To investigate the crosstalk between hAT-MSCs and BTICs, various cytokines were analyzed. Using co-culture system of hAT-MSCs and BTICs, we analyzed the mRNA expression patterns of cytokine receptors (CCR2, CCR4, CCR5, CCR7, CCR9, CCR10, XCR1, CXCR1, IL-8R, CXCR4, CX3CR1, IL1R1, IL6R, MET, PDGFRB, KDR, CD44, IFNAR1 and TEK) by qRT-PCR and protein level of their ligand in co-cultured media by Bio-Plex human cytokine ELISA.
We confirmed the migratory capacity of t hAT-MSCs toward BTICs in vitro and BTICs-derived xenograft brain tumors in vivo live imaging. mRNA expression of receptors (CCR4, CCR5, CCR10, XCR1, CXCR1, IL-8R, CXCR4, PDGFRB, KDR, CD44, IFNAR1 and TEK) increased two- to eighteen-fold higher levels. The cytokine analysis revealed that the ligand levels of hAT-MSCs (medulloblastoma: VEGF, IL6, IL8, CCL3, CCL2 and TEK; ATRT: VEGF, CCL3 and TEK; glioblastoma: CCL2, PDGF, TEK and IGF1) and the ligand levels BTICs (medulloblastoma: CCL5 and CXCL4; ATRT: IL-8 and CXCL4; glioblastoma: CXCL4 and IGF1) were elevated in the co-cultured media.
Our findings demonstrated that hAT-MSCs can target BTICs. Cross-talk between hAT-MSCs cytokine receptor and BTICs ligand (medulloblastoma: CCR5/CCL5 and CXCR4/CXCL4; ATRT: IL-8R/IL-8 and CXCR4/CXCL4; glioblastoma: CXCR4/CXCL4 and IGF1R/IGF1) play cardinal role in this process.

Abstract
Primordial germ cells (PGC) from early embryos are applicable to various kinds of research, including the production of transgenic animals. Primordial germ cells eventually migrate and differentiate into germ cells in the gonads, where they settle and rapidly proliferate. However, the proliferation rate of PGC is low in early embryos, and there are many significant pathways that mediate PGC activity. Therefore, in vitro culture of PGC from early embryos with efficient growth factors has been necessary. Recently, we cultured chicken PGC from embryonic d 2.5 with basic fibroblast growth factor and characterized the PGC through analysis of cell morphology, survival, proliferation, and apoptosis. However, large-scale analyses of genes expressed in cultured PGC and the genes involved in associated pathways are limited. The objective of the present investigation was to identify the signaling and metabolic pathways of expressed genes by microarray comparison between PGC and their somatic counterpart, chicken embryonic fibroblasts (CEF). We identified 795 genes that were expressed more predominantly in PGC and 824 genes that were expressed more predominantly in CEF. Among the predominant genes in PGC, 201 were differentially identified in 106 pathways. Among the predominant genes in CEF, 242 were differentially identified in 99 pathways. To further validate the genes involved in at least one candidate pathway, those involved in the cell cycle (12 predominant genes in PGC and 8 predominant genes in CEF) were examined by real-time PCR. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate signaling and metabolic pathways in cultured PGC.

Abstract
Cisplatin, a chemotherapeutic agent for treating various solid tumors, produces hearing loss in approximately half a million cancer patients annually in the United States. In the course of developing a new protective agent against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity, we have been interested in a novel synthetic compound, 3-amino-3-(4-fluoro-phenyl)-1H-quinoline-2,4-dione (KR-22332). The effect of KR-22332 on cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity was analyzed in vitro in an organ of Corti-derived cell line (HEI-OC1), and in vivo in a zebrafish and rat model. Cisplatin-induced apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and altered mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) in HEI-OC1 cells were observed. KR-22332 significantly inhibited cisplatin-induced apoptosis, change of MMP, and intracellular ROS generation. KR-22332 markedly attenuated the cisplatin-induced loss and changes of auditory neuromasts in the zebrafish. Transtympanic administration of KR-22332 in a rat model was protective against cisplatin-induced hearing loss, as determined by click-evoked auditory brainstem response (p<0.01). Tissue terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling of rat cochlea demonstrated that KR-22332 blocked cisplatin-induced apoptosis. In addition, transtympanic administration of KR-22332 inhibited cisplatin-induced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-oxidase 3 (NOX3) overexpression in the rat cochlea. KR-22332 significantly reduced the expression of p-53, mitogen-activated protein kinases, caspase 3, and tumor necrosis factor-α compared to their significant increase after cisplatin treatment. The results of this study suggest that KR-22332 may prevent ototoxicity caused by the administration of cisplatin through the inhibition of mitochondrial dysfunction and the suppression of ROS generation. These novel findings implicate KR-22332 as a potential candidate for protective agent against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity.

Abstract
C57BL/6J mice have been widely used as a diet-induced obesity model because they trigger common features of the human metabolic syndrome. In the present study, C57BL/6J male mice were fed either a high-fat diet (HFD) or normal diet (ND) during a 24-week period, and then the age-dependent liver proteome of mice in two groups was analyzed using 2-DE combined with MALDI-TOF-MS. Among identified proteins, up-regulated proteins were subdivided to early (during the first 4 weeks) and late (20~24 weeks) markers that played a role in diet-induced obesity development. Important early markers included ketohexokinase and prohibitin, and late markers included the 75 kDa glucose-regulated protein, citrate synthase, and selenium-binding liver protein. Of these, the 75 kDa glucoseregulated protein has already been linked to obesity; however, prohibitin protein involved in obesity was identified for the first time in this study. In order to validate the proteomic results and gain insight into metabolic changes between the two groups, we further confirmed the expression pattern of some proteins of interest by Western blot analysis. Combined results of proteomic analysis with Western blot analysis revealed that antioxidant enzymes were progressively decreased, whereas cytoskeletal proteins were time-dependently increased in HFD mice.

Abstract
High-quality nano-sized Na(Co0.91Ni0.09)2O4 powders, i.e., 27 nm in average size, were synthesized by the solution combustion route. The magnitude of the electrical conductivity, the Seebeck coefficient, and the power factor for Na(Co0.91Ni0.09)2O4 depended strongly on the fuel used and followed the order of aspartic acid > glutamic acid > alanine > glycine. The order of the thermoelectric characteristics was consistent with that of the density of Na(Co0.91Ni0.09)2O4. The maximal power factor (1.06 x 10(-3) Wm(-1) K(-2)) was achieved for aspartic acid-processed Na(Co0.91 Ni0.09)2O4 twice-sintered at 800 degrees C. We believe that the solution combustion route was highly effective for fabricating high-efficiency thermoelectric materials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The ultraviolet (UV)-induced red fluorescence of patients with acne has been considered to be caused by Propionibacterium acnes. OBJECTIVES To study the correlation of the facial red fluorescence with the casual sebum level and the number of acne lesions and to investigate the difference in clinical features, according to both distribution and proportion of fluorescence. METHODS A total of 878 patients clinically diagnosed with acne vulgaris were included. Inflammatory and noninflammatory acne lesions were counted separately. UV fluorescent photography and casual sebum level measurements were performed. UV-induced fluorescence patterns were classified according to the facial distribution. The proportions of UV-induced red fluorescence were calculated. RESULTS We identified six different fluorescence distribution patterns in the T-zone (the forehead, nose and chin) and three different patterns in the U-zone (both cheeks). The proportion of fluorescence in the U-zone showed a positive correlation with the casual sebum level and the number of acne lesions. In the T-zone, the fluorescence proportion correlated with the casual sebum level, but not with the number of acne lesions. As the patients' age and the age at onset increased, the distribution of fluorescence changed from the upper part of the T-zone to the lower part, and to the centre of the face in the U-zone. CONCLUSIONS Our results support the hypothesis that the origin of facial red fluorescence is sebum. In patients with acne, analyses of the pattern and proportion of UV-induced red fluorescence can be useful for evaluating the sebum secretion and selecting efficient treatment modalities.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to understand if sport improves attention symptoms, social competency, and cognitive functions in children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The present study was designed as a 6-week, prospective trial, including 12 sessions of education/sports therapy. 13 ADHD children participated in a 90-min athletic activity (sports-cADHD) twice a week, while 15 ADHD children received education on behavior control (edu-cADHD). During the 6-week treatment period, the sports-cADHD group showed greater improvements in DuPaul's ADHD Rating Scale scores, parent and teacher version (K-ARS-PT), compared to those of the edu-sADHD group. The cognitive functions assessed with the digit symbol and Trail-Making Test part B (TMT B) were improved in the sports-cADHD group, while the cognitive functions observed in the edu-sADHD group were not significantly changed. The cooperativeness scores in the sports-cADHD group were greatly increased compared to those of the edu-sADHD group. The results demonstrated a positive correlation with sports and improvement in attention symptoms, cognitive symptoms and social skills. The results of the present study suggest that therapy in the form of athletic activity may increase social competency in children with ADHD, as demonstrated by improved cognitive functions.

Abstract
We investigated the forces required to remove thoracic epidural catheters to determine the effect of patient position on removal. Eighty-four patients undergoing open thoracotomy and thoracic patient-controlled epidural analgesia were enrolled. Catheterisation was performed under fluoroscopic guidance before surgery, and the patients were allocated to one of three position groups for removal: prone; sitting; and lateral. On the third postoperative day, the peak tension during withdrawal in the assigned position was measured. No differences in mean (SD) forces were found between groups: prone 1.61 (0.39) N, supine 1.62 (0.61) N and lateral 1.36 (0.56) N (p = 0.140). The withdrawal forces required to remove thoracic epidural catheters were not affected by the position. Thus, the position for removal can be determined by patient's choice and clinical judgement.

Abstract
No studies have reported the long-term effects of entecavir switching in patients with multidrug resistance who developed resistance after lamivudine/adefovir sequential therapy. We evaluated the efficacy of 96 weeks of entecavir therapy in patients with resistance to lamivudine/adefovir sequential therapy. In total, 33 patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection with evidence of active viral replication (HBV DNA levels ≥ 10(5) copies/mL) or a history of treatment failure to lamivudine/adefovir sequential therapy between April 2007 and July 2009 were treated with entecavir (1.0 mg daily) for at least 48 weeks. The rates of alanine transaminase (ALT) normalization and HBV DNA negativity were 66.7% (14/21) and 24.2% (8/33) at 48 weeks, respectively. The initial HBV DNA level was the only factor that was inversely associated with serum HBV DNA negativity after 48 weeks of entecavir therapy (P < 0.023). At 96 weeks, the rates of ALT normalization and HBV DNA negativity were 77.8% (7/9) and 16.7% (3/18), respectively. Viral breakthrough occurred in 21.2% (7/33) and 78.9% (15/19) of patients at 48 and 96 weeks, respectively. Patients who achieved a HBV DNA level of <4 log(10) copies/mL at 48 weeks maintained a similar HBV DNA level and a normal ALT level until 96 weeks. Entecavir monotherapy for 96 weeks was not efficacious for patients with lamivudine/adefovir-resistant HBV. The initial HBV DNA level was the only predictive factor for antiviral efficacy. However, patients who achieved a HBV DNA level of <4 log(10) copies/mL with a normal ALT level at 48 weeks should maintain, rather than stop, entecavir therapy.

Abstract
This prospective, randomized, double-blind study compared the effects of dexmedetomidine and remifentanil on haemodynamic stability, sedation and postoperative pain control in the postanaesthetic care unit (PACU). Fifty consecutive patients scheduled for total laparoscopic hysterectomy were randomly assigned to receive infusions of either dexmedetomidine (1 μg/kg) i.v. over 10 min followed by 0.2-0.7 μg/kg per h continuous i.v. infusion or remifentanil (0.8-1.2 μg/kg) i.v. over 1 min followed by 0.05-0.1 μg/kg i.v. per min, starting at the end of surgery to the time in the PACU. Modified observer's assessment of alertness scores were significantly lower in the dexmedetomidine group than in the remifentanil group at 0, 5 and 10 min after arrival in the PACU. Blood pressure and heart rate in the dexmedetomidine group were significantly lower than that recorded in the remifentanil group in the PACU. Dexmedetomidine, at the doses used in this study, had a significant advantage over remifentanil in terms of postoperative haemodynamic stability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperuricaemia is a common finding in patients with psoriasis. However, previous studies have reported inconsistent results about the association between serum uric acid concentration (SUAC) and psoriasis severity. Recent studies have also reported that SUAC is associated with metabolic dysregulation. AIM To assess any association between SUAC and clinical features of psoriasis, and to investigate the characteristics of patients with psoriasis with hyperuricaemia compared with similar patients with normouricaemia. METHODS Cross-sectional data from 198 Korean patients with psoriasis who visited our clinic were analysed. Association of SUAC with clinical features of psoriasis, body mass index (BMI) and various laboratory values was assessed in both genders separately. RESULTS The average uric acid concentration of patients with psoriasis was not significantly different from that of the healthy population, for both genders (P > 0.05). There was a positive correlation between SUAC and Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) and BMI in patients with psoriasis (P < 0.05). There was no association with age of disease onset, family history of psoriasis, or other laboratory values (P > 0.05), in either gender. Of the other factors of disease severity, the extent of body surface involvement was correlated with uric acid concentration (P < 0.05) although there was no significant relationship with activity of individual lesions (P > 0.05). Mean PASI and extent of psoriasis were increased in hyperuricaemic compared with normouricaemic patients (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS SUAC in patients with psoriasis is positively associated with PASI, extent of skin involvement and BMI for both genders independently.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The periodontal ligament (PDL), which is interposed between the alveolar bone and roots, supports teeth against mechanical stress. Periostin and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) might play essential roles in maintaining PDL fiber integrity under mechanical stress. However, this relationship has not been studied at the protein and gene levels. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the PDL fiber system without masticatory load to determine the structural changes in the PDL in the absence of mechanical stress. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 45 Wistar male rats (12 wk of age) whose upper-right first molars were relieved from occlusion for 24 h, 72 h, 7 d or 21 d. The PDL was examined histologically, and changes in the gene and protein levels of periostin and CTGF were investigated. RESULTS The PDL space width was reduced significantly. Histologically, an initial reduction in the fiber number and thinning of PDL fibers were observed, followed by disarrangement of the PDL fibers and their attachments to the alveolar bone; finally, the PDL fibers lost their meshwork structure. Real-time RT-PCR results revealed sharp down-regulation of the periostin and CTGF mRNA levels at 24 and 72 h, respectively, which continued throughout the experiment. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that periostin localized to both the cellular elements and the extracellular matrix, whereas CTGF localized only to the cellular elements. Periostin and CTGF immunoreactivities became very weak without masticatory load. CONCLUSION In the absence of mechanical stress, the PDL fiber system undergoes degradation concomitantly with a reduction in the periostin and CTGF levels in the PDL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Assessment of psoriatic scales is important to determine the severity of psoriasis. However, there are very limited numbers of objective, quantitative and observer-independent tools for measuring the severity of psoriasis. OBJECTIVE To determine whether the bioengineering parameters of the psoriatic scale can be used to assess the severity of psoriasis instead of the psoriatic severity index of scales (PSIs) score. METHODS Thirty-four patients with psoriasis were included. A representative lesion from each patient was selected and bioengineering parameters were measured using the Corneofix(®). Simultaneously, the severity of the scales was assessed by the PSIs score using clinical photographs of the lesions. In addition, skin color and elasticity parameters were also measured using the Colorimeter(®), the Mexameter(®) and the Cutometer(®). RESULTS Statistical differences in the scale parameters were observed between the PSIs 2 and 3 scores. Among the scale parameters, the percent area and area in μm(2) were negatively correlated with the PSIs score. In addition, the Colorimeter(®) a, b parameters and the Cutometer(®) R9 parameters were significantly correlated with the PSIs score. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study showed that the severity of psoriatic scales could be measured objectively using the Corneofix(®).

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The hippocampal atrophy of MDD has been known, but the region shape contractions of the hippocampus in MDD were inconsistent. Spheric harmonic shape analysis was applied to the hippocampus in female patients with unremitting MDD to evaluate morphometric changes of the hippocampus. MATERIALS AND METHODS Shape analysis was performed by using T1-weighted MR imaging in 21 female patients with MDD and 21 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Manually segmented hippocampi were parameterized, and the point-to-point-based group difference was compared by using the Hotelling T-squared test. The partial correlation analyses were tested between clinical variables and shape changes. RESULTS Both hippocampal volumes were small in patients with MDD compared with healthy controls, and the right hippocampal volume was negatively correlated with the number of episodes at marginal significance. Regional shape contractions were found in the ambient gyrus, basal hippocampal head, posterior subiculum, and dorsal hippocampus of the left hemisphere. The right hippocampus showed a similar pattern but was less atrophic compared with the left hippocampus. A negative correlation was found between the HDRS and shape deformation in the CA3, ambient gyrus, posterior subiculum, and gyrus fasciolaris of the left hippocampus. CONCLUSIONS We showed atrophy and regional shape contractions in the hippocampi of patients with MDD, which were more dominant on the left side. The causes of hippocampal damage could be the hypersecretion of glucocorticoids contributing to neuronal death or the failing of adult neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Loss of dopaminergic neurons in the nigrostriatal pathway is well-documented in PD, whereas neuronal changes beyond the nigrostriatal pathway are uncertain. The purpose of our study was to estimate volume changes in the striatum and thalamus, which are areas of the basal ganglia, as well as in GM and WM located beyond the nigrostriatal pathway, in early-stage PD. MATERIALS AND METHODS We enrolled 30 participants (15 healthy controls and 15 patients with PDND with H & Y stage I or II). Cognitive function was assessed by using the MMSE. ICV and the volumes of the caudate nucleus, putamen, thalamus, GM, and WM were calculated via 3D volume analysis by using MR imaging. RESULTS A comparison of the PD group with the control group revealed an absence of significant differences between them regarding age and MMSE scores. Comparison of the volumes of regional brain structures of patients with PD with those of controls revealed the presence of significant differences in the caudate nucleus, thalamus, and WM (P<.05) between the groups. However, there were no significant differences in the volumes of the putamen and GM or in ICV between patients with PD and controls. The results of ANCOVA by using the covariates of age and ICV showed a significant difference in the caudate nucleus, thalamus, and WM between patients with PD and controls (P<.05). CONCLUSIONS We suggest that loss of WM volume may occur in early disease stages and that variation of the volumes of the caudate nucleus and thalamus may be an early phenomenon of disease progression.

Abstract
In this study, a modified adsorbent, alginate complex beads, was prepared and applied to the removal of mixed contaminants from wastewater. The alginate complex beads were generated by the immobilization of powdered activated carbon and synthetic zeolites onto alginate gel beads, which were then dried at 110 °C for 20 h until the diameter had been reduced to 1 mm. This dry technique increased the hardness of the adsorbent to assure its durability and application. The adsorption onto the alginate complex beads of organic and inorganic compounds, as target contaminants, was investigated by performing both equilibrium and kinetic batch experiments. From the adsorption isotherms, according to the Langmuir equation, the alginate complex bead was capable of effectively removing benzene, toluene, zinc and cadmium. From kinetic batch experiments, the removal efficiencies of benzene, toluene, zinc and cadmium were found to be 66.5, 92.4, 74.1 and 76.7%, respectively, for initial solution concentrations of 100 mg L(-1). The results indicated that the adsorbent developed in this study has the potential to be a promising material for the removal of mixed pollutants from industrial wastewater or contaminated groundwater.

Abstract
Nano-sized Ca3Co(4-x)Mn(x)O9 (0 < or = x < or = 0.6) thermoelectric powders were synthesized by solution combustion method, using aspartic acid as fuel. The microstructure and high-temperature (500-800 degrees C) thermoelectric properties of the Ca3Co(4-x)Mn(x)O9 were investigated. The addition of Mn for Co in Ca3Co(4-x)Mn(x)O9 resulted in a decrease of the electrical conductivity and a significant increase of the Seebeck coefficient. Consequently, the power factor was remarkably enhanced by the addition of Mn. Ca3Co(3.7)Mn(0.3)O9 sample showed the highest value of the power factor (1.24 x 10(-4) Wm(-1) K(-2)) at 800 degrees C. We believe that the Ca3Co(4-x)Mn(x)O9 is strongly desirable as a novel high-temperature thermoelectric material for power generation.

Abstract
We successfully synthesized nano-sized Ce(0.8)Gd(0.2)O(2-delta) powders by combustion method, using gelatin as fuel. The calcined powders showed high-quality characteristics, i.e., nano-scale size (14-35 nm) and narrow size distribution. The structural, morphological, and electrical characteristics of the sintered Ce(0.8)Gd(0.2)O(2-delta) were studied systematically, depending on sintering temperature. The crystal structure of the Ce(0.8)Gd(0.2)O(2-delta) belonged to the cubic fluorite structure. The gelatin-assisted combustion synthesized Ce(0.8)Gd(0.2)O(2-delta) powders allowed to sinter well at low temperature for dense and ultra-fine Ce(0.8)Gd(0.2)O(2-delta) electrolyte with good electrical conductivity. The sintering temperature of the Ce(0.8)Gd(0.2)O2 powder was approximately 300 degrees C lower than that of conventional solid-state synthesized powder. The nanopowder produced was sintered into pellets with relative densities over 99.1% of the theoretical value even at 1400 degrees C. The Ce(0.8)Gd(0.2)O(2-delta) sintered at 1400 degrees C exhibited a conductivity of 0.101 S/cm at 800 degrees C in air.

Abstract
Gd and Tb co-doped Ce0.8Gd0.2-xTb(x)O2-delta (0 < or = x < or = 0.09) nanopowders were synthesized by the combustion method using aspartic acid as fuel. The calcined powders formed a ceria-based single phase with a cubic fluorite structure. In addition, the powders were pure, homogeneous, and nanocrystalline nature, i.e., 20.1-23.4 nm in the calculated crystallite size. The partial incorporation of Tb for Gd caused a decrease in the average grain size of the sintered bodies. The high-quality nanosized Ce0.8Gd0.17Tb0.03O2-delta powders provided a high density, ultra-fine grain size, and high electrical conductivity even at the low sintering temperature of 1300 degrees C. The grain size and density of the Ce0.8Gd0.17Tb0.03O2-delta were approximately 146 nm and approximately 99% of the theoretical density, respectively, allowing enhanced electrical conductivity (0.106 Scm(-1) at 800 degrees C).

Abstract
This prospective randomized study compared the effects of two types of anaesthesia on peri-operative anaesthetic profiles from induction to recovery and on immunological and neurohormonal responses to anaesthesia and surgical stress. Forty patients were assigned to undergo either volatile induction and maintenance of anaesthesia (VIMA) with sevoflurane or total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) with propofol and remifentanil. Plasma adrenaline, noradrenaline, cortisol, glucose and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were measured at baseline, induction, incision and extubation. TIVA produced a significantly lower intubation score, shorter time to intubation and faster waking time than VIMA, but recovery profiles did not differ. Adrenaline, noradrenaline, cortisol and glucose levels were significantly lower with TIVA than VIMA, but there was no difference in IL-6 levels between the two groups. TIVA with propofol and remifentanil may be preferable to VIMA with sevoflurane alone because it leads to smoother, more rapid induction, more rapid awakening and lower stress responses to surgical stimuli.

Abstract
Congenital hyperpigmentation in the acro-genital area and simultaneous occurrence of ganglioneuroma in the esophagus have yet to be reported. Herein, we report a 4-month-old girl presenting with feeding difficulty by esophageal ganglioneuroma and symmetrically distributed brown pigmented patches on the lips, axillae, dorsa of fingers and toes, and genital area. Although the esophageal stricture was resolved by surgical removal of ganglioneuroma, her skin manifestations remained for over 2 years.

Abstract
In this study biodegradation of aqueous benzene during transport in a laboratory-scale aquifer model was investigated by conducting a 2-D plume test and numerical modelling. Benzene biodegradation and transport was simulated with the 2-D numerical model developed for solute transport coupled with a Haldane-Andrews type function for inclusion of an inhibition constant which is effective for high concentrations. Experimental data revealed that in the early stages the benzene plume showed a rather clear shape but lost its shape with increased travel time. The mass recoveries of benzene at 9, 16, and 22 h were 37, 13 and 8%, respectively, showing that a significant mass reduction of aqueous benzene occurred in the model aquifer. The major processes responsible for the mass reduction were biodegradation and irreversible sorption. The modelling results also indicated that the simulation based on the microbial parameters from the batch experiments slightly overestimated the mass reduction of benzene during transport. The sensitivity analysis demonstrated that the benzene plume was sensitive to the maximum specific growth rate and slightly sensitive to the half-saturation constant of benzene but almost insensitive to the Haldane inhibition constant. The insensitivity to the Haldane inhibition constant was due to the rapid decline of the benzene peak concentration by natural attenuation such as hydrodynamic dispersion and irreversible sorption. An analysis of the model simulation also indicated that the maximum specific growth rate was the key parameter controlling the plume behaviour, but its impact on the plume was affected by competing parameter such as the irreversible sorption rate coefficient.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Adiponectin receptors 1 and 2 (ADIPOR1 and ADIPOR2) are considered as candidate genes for type 2 diabetes because they mediate the metabolic effects of adiponectin on target tissues. We investigated whether common polymorphisms of ADIPOR1 and ADIPOR2 are associated with type 2 diabetes or its related phenotypes in Koreans. DESIGN AND PATIENTS By sequencing of the DNA samples from 24 unrelated Korean subjects, we selected seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from ADIPOR1 and four SNPs from ADIPOR2 for genotyping in 757 type 2 diabetic patients and 644 nondiabetic subjects. RESULTS None of the SNPs were associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes. However, g.-7309A>G (rs75172865) in ADIPOR1 was associated with lower insulin resistance, measured by the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Thereafter, we transfected three different human cell lines with plasmids harbouring g.-7309A>G and found that this variant reduced the promoter activity of ADIPOR1. In ADIPOR2, g.-63442G (novel SNP) and g.33447T (rs1044471) were associated with smaller waist circumference. CONCLUSIONS None of the SNPs in either ADIPOR1 or ADIPOR2 were associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes in Koreans. However, the altered activity of the ADIPOR1 promoter was associated with insulin resistance and SNPs of ADIPOR2 were associated with waist circumference.

Abstract
Aggravating headache accompanied by nausea and epigastric discomfort suggesting a warning leak in a 39-year-old woman with a giant thrombosed intracranial aneurysm prompted us to undertake coiling of the aneurysm. After uneventful coil embolization of the aneurysm, collapse of the lung related to bronchospam developed, and was found to have a gastrointestinal pathology which had gone undetected before the procedure. Despite its rarity, gastrointestinal pathology mimicking warning leak should have been considered in a patient with a warning leak sign.

Abstract
The efficacy of forced air warming with a surgical access blanket in preventing a decrease in core temperature during anaesthesia and post-anaesthesia shivering (PAS) was compared with two widely used interventions comprising forced air warming combined with an upper body blanket, and a circulating water mattress, in a prospective, randomized double-blind study. A total of 90 patients undergoing total abdominal hysterectomy were studied, 30 in each group. Core temperature was measured 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 min after induction of anaesthesia. PAS was evaluated every 5 min after emergence from anaesthesia over a period of 1 h. Core temperature fell in all three groups compared with the baseline, but forced air warming using a surgical access blanket was more effective than the other warming methods in ameliorating the temperature decrease. The surgical access blanket was also superior to the circulating water mattress in reducing PAS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE There are a few reports regarding the outcome evaluation of balloon-expandable intracranial stent placement (BEICS). The purpose of our study was to evaluate the outcome and factors related to the adverse events (AEs) of BEICS. MATERIALS AND METHODS We evaluated 100 consecutive patients who underwent BEICS. We assessed the procedural success (residual stenosis < 50%), AEs (minor strokes, major strokes, and death), clinical outcome, and restenosis (> 50%) at 6 months. We also analyzed 18 factors including symptom patterns related to AE rate. Symptom patterns revealed 1) stable patients (n = 73) with improving, stationary, or resolved symptoms; and 2) unstable patients (n = 27) with gradual worsening or fluctuating symptoms (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale [NIHSS] > or = 4) within 2 days before stent placement. RESULTS The procedural success rate was 99%. Overall, there were 10 (10%) AEs within the 6 months: 4 (4%) minor strokes, 3 (3%) major strokes, and 3 (3%) deaths including a death from myocardial infarction. AE rate was 4.1% in stable and 25.9% in unstable patients. Restenosis at 6 months revealed 0% (0/59). Good outcome (modified Rankin Scale < or = 2) at 6 months was 97% (71/73) in stable and 67% (18/27) in unstable patients. Stepwise logistic regression model revealed that symptom pattern (unstable versus stable) was the only significant risk factor (OR, 8.167; 95% CI, 1.933-34.500; P = .004). CONCLUSION BEICS revealed a low AE and good outcome rate at 6 months, especially in the stable patients. Midterm outcome was also favorable in the unstable patient group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease that may involve any skin site. In particular, psoriasis on the face gives rise to considerable concern because of associated cosmetic problems and psychosocial distress. Some authors have reported that a significant proportion of patients with psoriasis have facial involvement, and several reports have suggested that facial involvement is a marker of severe psoriasis. However, patients with facial psoriasis seem to have clinical characteristics that depend on the distributions of their facial lesions. OBJECTIVE We sought to classify facial psoriasis and evaluate clinical characteristics according to the distribution of facial psoriatic lesions, and to compare the severities of body and scalp psoriasis in patients with central or peripheral facial lesions. METHODS A total of 194 patients with psoriasis with facial involvement who presented at our psoriasis clinic were enrolled in this study. Onset of psoriasis, family history, history of phototherapy or systemic therapy, and admission history were recorded. Severity of psoriasis on whole body, face, and scalp were rated using Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) scores. Patients were categorized into 3 types according to facial lesion distribution: peripherofacial type (PF) (upper forehead and/or periauricular lesions), centrofacial type, and mixed type. RESULTS The PF and mixed type were more common than the centrofacial type. Peripherofacial involvement was related to a high scalp PASI score, whereas centrofacial involvement was associated with a high whole body PASI score. Disease duration before facial lesion development was less for the PF. Early onset of disease and extensive treatment were more frequent for centrofacial type than PF. The relationship between facial and body psoriasis progression was less strong for PF. LIMITATIONS This was a retrospective study conducted at a single location, and the severity and extent of psoriasis were evaluated only once, at first visits. CONCLUSION Facial psoriasis can be categorized into 3 different types. Peripherofacial involvement might be a consequence of severe scalp psoriasis, whereas centrofacial involvement might be a marker of severe body psoriasis. Thus, it would help during the treatment of patients with psoriasis to consider that different lesion distributions may reflect different clinical characteristics.

Abstract
SUMMARY Dissecting basilar aneurysms have rarely been reported but are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Therefore, controversy exists as to the proper management of such lesions because their natural course is not well understood. We describe a 50-year-old man with a dissecting aneurysm involving the lower basilar trunk who presented with pontine infarction corresponding to the aneurysmal sac location. We obliterated the dissecting basilar aneurysm by coil embolization of the aneurysmal sac as well as the diseased segment of the basilar trunk after confirmation of collateral filling of the basilar artery through the posterior communicating artery. The patient recovered without any procedural complication. Eight month follow-up revealed complete disappearance of the aneurysm without symptom recurrence together with preservation of collateral flow in the distal basilar artery. Obliteration of the parent artery as well as the aneurysmal sac with coils could be considered in a lower basilar aneurysm of a dissecting nature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Spinal CSF leak syndrome is a unique disorder caused by spinal CSF leak. In this study, we attempted to determine whether MR myelography (MRM) can detect the leakage site in the spine. MATERIALS AND METHODS We performed both MRM and radioisotope cisternography (RIC) in 15 patients with spinal CSF leak syndrome. Patients were included in this study if they had at least 2 of the following criteria: 1) orthostatic headache, 2) low CSF opening pressure, and 3) diffuse pachymeningeal enhancement on brain MR imaging. For comparison, we performed MRM in 15 subjects without symptoms of spinal CSF leak syndrome. MRM was performed with the 2D turbo spin-echo technique in the entire spine by using a 1.5T scanner. Two blinded radiologists evaluated the MRM findings in a total of 30 cases, composed of patient and control groups, with regard to the presence of leakage and the level of leakage if present. RIC was performed only in the patient group and was assessed by consensus among 3 physicians experienced in nuclear medicine. The diagnostic performance of MRM and RIC was evaluated on the basis of the clinical diagnosis of spinal CSF leak syndrome. RESULTS The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of MR myelography for detecting CSF leak was 86.7%, 86.7%, and 86.7% for reader 1, respectively, and 80.0%, 93.3%, and 86.7% for reader 2, respectively. The sensitivity of RIC was 93.3%. Agreement between the 2 techniques for the detection of CSF leak was substantial in reader 1 and moderate in reader 2 (kappa = 0.634 and 0.444, respectively). CONCLUSION MRM is an effective tool for detecting CSF leak in the spine in patients with spinal CSF leak syndrome.

Abstract
A disk-type solid-phase extraction (SPE) method was used for the extraction of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in natural water and tap water. Since this SPE system comprised airtight glass covers with a decompression pump, it enabled continuous extraction with semi-automation. The disk-type SPE method was validated by comparing its recovery rates of spiked internal standards with those of the liquid-liquid extraction (LLE). The recovery ranges of both methods were similar in terms of (13)C-labeled internal standards: 64.3-99.2% for the LLE and 52.4-93.6% for the SPE. For the native spike of 1,3,6,8-tetrachlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and octachlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD), the recoveries in the SPE were in the normal range of 77.9-101.1%. However, in the LLE, the recoveries of 1,3,6,8-TCDD decreased significantly. One of the reasons for the low recovery is that the solubility of this congener is high. The semi-automated SPE method was applied to the analysis of different types of water: river water, snow, sea water, raw water for drinking purposes, and tap water. PCDD/F congeners were found in some sea water and snow samples, while their concentrations in the other samples were below the limits of detection (LODs). This SPE system is appropriate for the routine analysis of water samples below 50L.

Abstract
gp130-mediated signaling is involved in both chondrogenesis and osteogenesis, but its direct role in the formation of embryonic Meckel's cartilage and associated mandibular development has not yet been elucidated. In this study, we examined the influence of gp130 ablation on the developing mandibular Meckel's cartilage by evaluating the morphological and histological changes as well as the gene expression patterns in developing embryonic gp130-/- mice. The ablation of the gp130 gene showed no change in region-specific collagen mRNA expression except for a slight delay in its expression but caused shortened embryonic Meckel's cartilage, delayed hypertrophic chondrocyte maturation and subsequent bony replacement with characteristic bending of the intramandibular Meckel's cartilage. The bending of Meckel's cartilage led to a narrow mandibular arch at the rostral area with poor cortical plate formation. These findings indicate that gp130-mediated signaling is important for the normal morphogenesis of Meckel's cartilage and subsequent mandibular development.

Abstract
The immobilized cell using self-assembled synthetic oligopeptide was applied to the electrochemical detection of pathogen infection. Thin films based on cysteine-terminated synthetic oligopeptides were fabricated for the immobilization of HeLa cell on gold (Au) substrate. Layer formation and immobilization of the cell were investigated with surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Experimental results showed that the thin film of cysteine-terminated synthetic oligopeptide was successfully fabricated and it could be applied for the immobilization of HeLa cells. The adhered living cell was exposed to E. coli O157:H7, which induced the change of SPR angle and electrochemical impedance signal. The proposed cell immobilization method using self-assembly technique can be applied to construct the cell microarray for on-site pathogen monitoring.

Abstract
To retard the migration of iodine released from a spent fuel after the break of a container, the reducing effects on the concentration of the iodide by container corrosion products and some buffer additives were examined in a solution with bentonite. Iron and copper, and their corrosion products scarcely reduced the iodide concentration. And kaolinite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, copper ore and galena, known as having a sorption property for iodine, did not noticeably sorb the iodide. However, palm active carbon, silver metal and Ag2O lowered the iodide concentration. Especially, Ag2O put into a disposal container would effectively hinder the migration of iodine to the outside of a disposal vault without a great loss if the pore size of the compacted buffer layer is maintained below 1 mu m.

Abstract
The oxide layer of a titanium surface is very stable, and seems to result in excellent biocompatibility and successful osseointegration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of high anodic oxidation voltages on the surface characteristics of titanium implants and the biologic response of rabbit tibiae. Bone tissue responses were evaluated by removal torque tests and histomorphometric analysis. Screw-shaped implants with microthreads were made of commercially pure titanium (Grade II). We prepared anodized implants under 300 V (group I), 400 V (group II), 500 V (group III) and 550 V (group IV). The surface characteristics of specimens were inspected according to three categories: surface morphology, surface roughness and oxide layer thickness. The screw-shaped implants were installed in rabbit tibiae. The removal torque values were measured and histomorphometric analysis was done after 1- and 3-month healing periods. Data indicate that as anodic oxidation voltage increased above 300 V, oxide layer thickness increased rapidly and pore size also increased. The roughness values of the implants increased with voltage up to 500 V, but decreased at 550 V. In the removal torque test, group III showed higher values than groups I and II at a statistically significant level (P < 0.05) after a 1-month healing period. In histomorphometric analysis, groups III and IV, after a 3-month healing period, showed greater bone to implant contact ratios for the total implant surface than did group I (P < 0.05).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the CT findings of lymph nodes of the neck involved in peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCL). MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-seven patients with pathologically proved PTCL with involvement of the lymph nodes of the neck were enrolled in this study. We retrospectively evaluated the lymph nodes on CT images with special attention to nodal necrosis, the margin, and enhancement patterns. RESULTS In the 27 patients studied, nodal necrosis and ill-defined margin were seen in 11 (41%) and 19 (70%), respectively. Heterogeneous enhancement of enlarged lymph nodes was noted on CT images in 19 (70%) of 27 patients. Homogeneous enhancement without ill-defined margin and/or nodal necrosis was only seen in 6 of 27 patients (22%). CONCLUSION Necrosis, an ill-defined margin, and heterogeneous enhancement of enlarged lymph nodes in the neck are relatively common CT features of PTCL. For patients with cervical lymph node enlargement, the presence of these findings may suggest high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, including PTCL.
