Abstract
BACKGROUND We previously reported that ultraviolet (UV) A eye irradiation reduces the ulcerative colitis induced by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS). This study examined the effects of UVA on colon carcinoma induced by azoxymethane (AOM) and DSS. METHODS We irradiated the eyes of ICR mice with UVA at a dose of 110 kJ/m2 using an FL20SBLB-A lamp for the experimental period. RESULTS In mice treated with these drugs, the symptom of colon carcinoma was reduced by UVA eye irradiation. The levels of interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in the blood were increased in AOM + DSS-treated mice; however, those levels were reduced by UVA eye irradiation. The expression of β-endorphin, methionine-enkephalin (OGF), μ-opioid receptor, and opioid growth factor receptor (OGFR) of the colon was increased in the AOM + DSS-treated mice, and these levels were increased further following UVA eye irradiation. When β-endorphin inhibitor was administered, the ameliorative effect of UVA eye irradiation was reduced, and the effect of eye irradiation disappeared entirely following the administration of naltrexone (inhibitor of both opioid receptor and OGFR). CONCLUSIONS These results suggested that UVA eye irradiation exerts major effects on AOM + DSS-induced colon carcinoma.

Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) following gastrectomy (TG) should be considered challenging even currently although its procedure and clinical value have been being standardized. Short- and long-term outcomes as well as standard reconstruction method following these procedures remain unclear. In order to clarify these issues, we reviewed worldwide English literature and 4 of our own cases of PD for patients with previous TG. In cases of PD following TG, previously-made Y-limb should not be used for reconstruction following PD because of probable cause of previously-made Y-limb for ALS. Long-term outcomes of PD after TG seemed unsatisfactory notably in cases of pancreatic cancer and thus application of PD for patients with previous TG should be carefully decided until reasonable explanation for this dismal outcome is obtained.

Methods Clinicopathological variables of 11 cases of PD for patients with previous TG were evaluated. Seven of these 11 were abstracted from a review of worldwide English literature and 4 of 11 were our own cases. Results 3 cases was reconstructed using Y-limb made in previous TG and afferent loop syndrome (ALS) was observed in 2 of 3, in these cases whereas no cases of ALS were found in cases reconstructed using newly-made Y-limb. In cases where PD was indicated for cancer, early cancer death, defined as death related to cancer recurrence observed within 2 years after PD, was observed in 6 of 9 cases. Notably in cases of pancreatic cancer recurrent cancer was diagnosed within 1 year after PD in 5 of 7 cases and 4 of these patients died of pancreatic cancer soon after recurrence. Conclusion In cases of PD following TG, previously-made Y-limb should not be used for reconstruction following PD because of probable cause of previously-made Y-limb for ALS. Abstract
Background Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS) is a rare cause of gastric outlet obstruction beyond infancy. Ramstedt pyloromyotomy remains the gold standard treatment for HPS. This type of HPS can be managed successfully with pyloromyotomy under laparoscopic or open procedures. Endoscopic pyloric balloon dilation (EPBD) has not been recommended in the treatment of HPS, and there are only a small number of reported cases who had had successful endoscopic pyloromyotomy (EP) for HPS only in infants. Case presentation The patient was suspected of having HPS when the patient was 1 year old after infancy. However, his parents thought that the vomiting and poor sucking were caused by Down syndrome-associated muscular hypotonia. Since then, no additional tests have been performed at their request. At 6 years of age, he was readmitted to our department because of persistent vomiting and failure to thrive, and HPS was diagnosed again. However, it was unknown whether the HPS had been persisting since infancy or was acquired. The first EPBD was slightly effective but did not remain effective for a long time. When the second EPBD was performed in combination with EP, the amount and frequency of vomiting were reduced dramatically. Conclusions The combination of EP and EPBD procedure may represent a safe, effective, and minimally invasive option for selected HPS patients in whom laparotomy would pose a significant risk or who do not respond to conventional medical treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first report to describe combination treatment with EP and EPBD in an older child with HPS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is suggested that there is some support for notion that frequency of activity can lead to improved mood in behavioral activation, but this research is relatively imprecise. We investigated whether positive reinforcement mediates the relationship between activation and alleviation of depressive symptoms METHODS Late adolescents with sub-threshold depressive symptoms participated in the study. We conducted an intervention using behavioral activation with the participants. Then, pre-and post-treatment results of behavioral activation were compared. We used mediation analysis using the bootstrapping method to examine whether changes in reinforcement mediated the relationship between changes in activation and improvements in depressive symptoms. RESULTS Participants improved significantly at the post-intervention assessment, compared to the baseline assessment. Results of mediation analysis indicated that reinforcement significantly mediated the relationship between activation and depressive symptoms, whereas activation alone had no a direct effect on depressive symptoms. LIMITATIONS Further studies with more diverse samples of participants are required in order to generalize the results of this study to more diverse populations. CONCLUSIONS The study provides the first full mediational test of behavioral activation model including both measures of activation and positive reinforcement, and we found support for behavioral activation's presumed mechanism of action that contact with positive reinforcement mediates the relation between activity and depression.

Abstract
The main behavioral characteristic of subthreshold depression that is observed in adolescents is the low frequency of exposure to environmental rewards. Therefore, it was considered that a simple intervention conducted in short sessions, focusing on increasing access to positively reinforcing activities, would be efficacious in increasing the availability of rewards. We conduct a randomized controlled trial to examine the efficacy of such a behavioral activation program that was conducted weekly for 5 weeks in 60-min sessions. Late adolescent university students aged 18-19 years with subthreshold depression were randomly allocated to a treatment (n = 62) or a control group (n = 56). The primary outcome of the study was the Beck Depression Inventory-II score. Results indicated that late adolescent students in the treatment group showed significant improvements in their depressive symptoms (effect size -0.90, 95 % CI -1.28 to -0.51) compared to the control group. Students in the treatment group also showed significant improvements in self-reported rating of quality of life and in behavioral characteristics. It is concluded that this intervention had a large and significant effect despite being short and simple and that this low-intensity cognitive behavioral therapy program could be conducted in many different types of institutions. It is suggested that the long-term effects of the treatment program should be targeted for investigation in future studies.

Abstract
AIM The effects of heat shock transcription factor 1 (HSF1) deficiency on the fibre type composition and the expression level of nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) family members (NFATc1, NFATc2, NFATc3 and NFATc4), phosphorylated glycogen synthase kinase 3α (p-GSK3α) and p-GSK3β, microRNA-208b (miR-208b), miR-499 and slow myosin heavy chain (MyHC) mRNAs (Myh7 and Myh7b) of antigravitational soleus muscle in response to unloading with or without reloading were investigated. METHODS HSF1-null and wild-type mice were subjected to continuous 2-week hindlimb suspension followed by 2- or 4-week ambulation recovery. RESULTS In wild-type mice, the relative population of slow type I fibres, the expression level of NFATc2, p-GSK3 (α and β), miR-208b, miR-499 and slow MyHC mRNAs (Myh7 and Myh7b) were all decreased with hindlimb suspension, but recovered after it. Significant interactions between train and time (the relative population of slow type I fibres; P = 0.01, the expression level of NFATc2; P = 0.001, p-GSKβ; P = 0.009, miR-208b; P = 0.002, miR-499; P = 0.04) suggested that these responses were suppressed in HSF1-null mice. CONCLUSION HSF1 may be a molecule in the regulation of the expression of slow MyHC as well as miR-208b, miR-499, NFATc2 and p-GSK3 (α and β) in mouse soleus muscle.

Abstract
Reports of cow's milk allergy (CMA) after neonatal gastrointestinal surgery have recently increased. In recent years it has been suggested that the development of CMA after gastrointestinal surgery in newborn infants is due to an immune function. In addition, the development of CMA might be synergistically exacerbated by congenital abnormalities of the intestinal mucosa, general conditional changes and local damage to the intestine by invasive surgery, and poor pre- or post-surgical nutrition. CMA manifests as a variety of symptoms, such as mild vomiting and bloody stool, decreased activity, poor oral intake, and ileus. CMA may also rarely cause gastrointestinal perforation. Here, we report the case of a newborn infant who developed CMA following repair of focal small intestinal perforation, in which eosinophilic enteritis was suspected to be a possible cause of anastomosis leakage.

Abstract
One mechanism by which non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) cause intestinal injury is by inducing matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that degrade and remodel the extracellular matrix. In addition to the intestinal mucosa, MMPs are expressed in the skin and can be activated by mast cell-secreted tryptase. We therefore investigated whether intestinal injury resulting from treatment with the NSAID indomethacin induced MMPs in the skin of mice and caused an associated disruption of skin function. Hairless mice and mast cell-deficient mice were administered indomethacin, after which damage to the jejuna and skin was assessed with immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. The plasma concentration of inflammatory mediators was assessed to evaluate potential pathways for signalling skin disruption in response to intestinal injury. In hairless mice with intestinal injury, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) was higher and skin hydration was lower than in control mice. The expression levels of mast cells, tryptase, MMP-1 and MMP-9 were also increased, with concurrent degradation of types I and IV collagen. In contrast, no changes in skin TEWL or skin hydration were observed in mast cell-deficient mice with indomethacin-induced intestinal injury. In all mice evaluated, the plasma concentrations of IgE, IgA, histamine and TNF-α were increased in response to indomethacin treatment. Skin disruption was strongly associated with indomethacin-induced small intestinal injury, and the activation of mast cells and induction of tryptase, MMP-1 and MMP-9 are critical to this association.

Abstract
We have previously reported that impaired skin barrier function was induced by small intestinal injury in mice. Therefore, we postulated that other intestinal diseases might also influence skin barrier function. In this study, we evaluated the skin barrier function of hairless mice with colon carcinoma that was induced by azoxymethane (AOM) and dextran sodium sulfate (DSS). In mice treated with these drugs, we observed elevated transepidermal water loss and reduced skin hydration levels, compared to those in the control mice. In addition, plasma nitrogen di/trioxide (NO2(-)/NO3(-)) levels were significantly elevated, and expression of type I collagen was significantly reduced in the treated mice, compared to those in control. These results suggest that impaired skin barrier function occurs in mice when colon carcinoma is present.

Abstract
AIM Effects of heat shock transcription factor 1 (HSF1) deficiency on heat stress-associated increase in slow soleus muscle mass of mice were investigated. METHODS Both HSF1-null and wild-type mice were randomly assigned to control and heat-stressed groups. Mice in heat-stressed group were exposed to heat stress (41 °C for 60 min) in an incubator without anaesthesia. RESULTS Significant increase in wet and dry weights, and protein content of soleus muscle in wild-type mice was observed seven days after the application of the heat stress. However, heat stress had no impact on soleus muscle mass in HSF1-null mice. Neither type of mice exhibited much effect of heat stress on HSF mRNA expression (HSF1, HSF2 and HSF4). On the other hand, heat stress upregulated heat shock proteins (HSPs) at the mRNA (HSP72) and protein (HSP72 and HSP110) levels in wild-type mice, but not in HSF1-null mice. The population of Pax7-positive nuclei relative to total myonuclei of soleus muscle in wild-type mice was significantly increased by heat stress, but not in HSF1-null mice. Furthermore, the absence of HSF1 gene suppressed heat stress-associated phosphorylation of Akt and p70 S6 kinase (p-p70S6K) in soleus muscle. CONCLUSION Heat stress-associated increase in skeletal muscle mass may be induced by HSF1 and/or HSF1-mediated stress response that activates muscle satellite cells and Akt/p70S6K signalling pathway.

Abstract
Human leukocyte antigens (HLA)-DQA1*01:07 was identified as an HLA-DQ blank specificity that segregated with the serological HLA-A2, -B7, -DR14, -DR52 haplotype, which carried DQB1*05:03. The blank specificity of DQA1*01:07-DQB1*05:03 may be because of lack of reactivity of available typing sera, or disruption of proper assembly of DQ heterodimer. The cDNA sequence of DQA1*01:07 is nearly identical to DQA1*01:04 except for a variant at position 304, which results in the replacement of an arginine with a cysteine at 79α. To determine whether the DQA1*01:07 product can be expressed on cell-surface, we co-expressed DQA1*01:07 with various DQB1*05 or *06 alleles in fibroblast cells. Cell-surface expression of DQ was detectable when DQA1*01:07 was co-expressed with DQB1*06:04 but undetectable with other DQB1*05 and DQB1*06 alleles, including DQB1*05:03, to which DQA1*01:07 was encoded in cis. These data suggest that DQA1*01:07 may act as a phenotypically null allele in the DQA1*01:07-DQB1*05:03 haplotype, while it can be expressed at a low level in the presences of certain DQB1*06 alleles, such as DQB1*06:04, in trans. Based on the null or low expression of DQA1*01:07 as shown in the previous and present studies, DQA1*01:07 has recently been renamed to DQA1*01:07Q, indicating its questionable expression.

Abstract
The stromal cells associated with tumors such as melanoma are significant determinants of tumor growth and metastasis. Using membrane-bound prostaglandin E synthase 1 (mPges1(-/-)) mice, we show that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production by host tissues is critical for B16 melanoma growth, angiogenesis, and metastasis to both bone and soft tissues. Concomitant studies in vitro showed that PGE2 production by fibroblasts is regulated by direct interaction with B16 cells. Autocrine activity of PGE2 further regulates the production of angiogenic factors by fibroblasts, which are key to the vascularization of both primary and metastatic tumor growth. Similarly, cell-cell interactions between B16 cells and host osteoblasts modulate mPGES-1 activity and PGE2 production by the osteoblasts. PGE2, in turn, acts to stimulate receptor activator of NF-κB ligand expression, leading to osteoclast differentiation and bone erosion. Using eicosanoid receptor antagonists, we show that PGE2 acts on osteoblasts and fibroblasts in the tumor microenvironment through the EP4 receptor. Metastatic tumor growth and vascularization in soft tissues was abrogated by an EP4 receptor antagonist. EP4-null Ptger4(-/-) mice do not support B16 melanoma growth. In vitro, an EP4 receptor antagonist modulated PGE2 effects on fibroblast production of angiogenic factors. Our data show that B16 melanoma cells directly influence host stromal cells to generate PGE2 signals governing neoangiogenesis and metastatic growth in bone via osteoclast erosive activity as well as angiogenesis in soft tissue tumors.

Abstract
CONTEXT Alcohol is frequently used to induce chronic liver injury in laboratory animals. Alcohol causes oxidative stress in the liver and increases the expression of inflammatory mediators that cause hepatocellular damage. However, during chronic liver injury, it is unclear if/how these liver-derived factors affect distal tissues, such as the skin. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate skin barrier function during chronic liver injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS Hairless mice were administered 5% or 10% ethanol for 8 weeks, and damages to the liver and skin were assessed using histological and protein-analysis methods, as well as by detecting inflammatory mediators in the plasma. RESULTS After alcohol administration, the plasma concentration of the aspartate and alanine aminotransferases increased, while albumin levels decreased. In mice with alcohol-induced liver injury, transepidermal water loss was significantly increased, and skin hydration decreased concurrent with ceramide and type I collagen degradation. The plasma concentrations of [Formula: see text]/[Formula: see text] and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) were significantly increased in mice with induced liver injury. TNF receptor (TNFR) 2 expression was upregulated in the skin of alcohol-administered mice, while TNFR1 levels remained constant. Interestingly, the impairment of skin barrier function in mice administered with 10% ethanol was ameliorated by administering an anti-TNF-α antibody. CONCLUSIONS We propose a novel mechanism whereby plasma TNF-α, via TNFR2 alone or with TNFR1, plays an important role in skin barrier function during chronic liver disease in these mouse models.

Abstract
CONTEXT It has been reported that chronic sennoside use is associated with the development of melanosis coli, colonic adenoma, and/or carcinomas. OBJECTIVES In this study, we investigated the immunological changes in the colon and skin after the administration of senna. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, we investigated the colon and epidermis of C57/BL6j mice after a single administration of 10 mg/kg of senna [Cassia angustifolia (Caesalpiniaceae); 3, 6, 12, and 24 h after administration] and after repeated once per week administrations (on days 3, 5, 7, 14, and 21 of administration). The LD50 and ED50 of senna used in this experiment were 165 mg/kg and 13 g/kg, respectively. RESULTS We demonstrated that the DOPA-positive cells in the colon increased at 12 h after single administration and were further increased from at 5-28 d after repeated administration. We also studied the physiological changes of the small intestine using the charcoal meal test. We found that there was a tendency for peristalsis to be inhibited after repeated senna administration. In the epidermis, we investigated the number of Langerhans cells, because they are important immune cells of the skin. The number of these cells decreased, especially after repeated administration. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION The present findings suggested that it is necessary to pay attention to not only the intestine but also the skin, during long-term senna treatment.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Defaecatory function is often poor after anterior resection. Denervation of the neorectum following high ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) is a possible cause of impaired defaecatory function. The purpose of this randomized clinical trial was to clarify whether the level of ligation of the IMA in patients with rectal cancer affects defaecatory function.
Methods
Between 2008 and 2011, patients who underwent anterior resection for rectal cancer were randomized to receive either high or low ligation of the IMA. The primary endpoint was to demonstrate the superiority of low ligation in terms of defaecatory function.
Results
One hundred patients were enrolled in the study; 51 were randomized to high ligation of the IMA and 49 to low ligation. There were no differences between the groups in terms of clinical data, except tumour stage, which was more advanced in the high-ligation group (P = 0·046). Nor were there any differences in defaecatory function, self-assessment of defaecation, Faecal Incontinence Quality of Life scale or continence score between groups at 3 months and 1 year. The number of harvested lymph nodes was similar. The rate of symptomatic anastomotic leakage was 16 per cent in the high-ligation group and 10 per cent in the low-ligation group (P = 0·415).
Conclusion
The level of ligation of the IMA in patients with rectal cancer did not affect defaecatory function or the incidence of postoperative complications. Registration number: NCT00701012 (http://www.clinicaltrials.gov).

Abstract
A wire grid polarizer comprised of chromium oxide is designed for a micro-lithography system using an ArF excimer laser. Optical properties for some material candidates are calculated using a rigorous coupled-wave analysis. The chromium oxide wire grid polarizer with a 90 nm period is fabricated by a double-patterning technique using KrF lithography and dry etching. The extinction ratio of the grating is greater than 20 dB (100:1) at a wavelength of 193 nm. Differences between the calculated and experimental results are discussed.

Abstract
Chronic HCV-infected patients tend to have vitamin D deficiency, suggesting that vitamin D supplementation may enhance the efficacy of treatment with pegylated interferon (PEG-IFN) and ribavirin (RBV). We therefore assessed the effects of vitamin D supplementation on viral response to PEG-IFN/RBV. Eighty-four patients with HCV genotype 1b were randomized, 42 to oral vitamin D supplementation (1000 IU/day) and 42 to nonsupplementation (control), from week 8 to the end of PEG-IFN/RBV therapy. The primary end point was undetectable HCV RNA at week 24 (viral response [VR]). VR rate at week 24 was significantly higher in the vitamin D than in the control group (78.6% vs 54.8% P = 0.037). Adverse events were similar in both groups. When patients were subdivided by IL28B SNP rs8099917 genotype, those with the TT genotype group showed a significantly higher VR rate at week 24 with than without vitamin D supplementation (86.2% vs 63.3% vs P = 0.044). Although patients with the TG/GG genotype, who were relatively resistant to PEG-IFN treatment, had similar VR rates at week 24 with and without vitamin D supplementation, the decline in viral load from week 8 to week 24 was significantly greater with than without vitamin D supplementation. Multivariate analysis showed that rs8099917 genotype and vitamin D supplementation contributed significantly to VR at week 24. SVR rates were similar in the vitamin D and control groups [64.3% (27/42) vs 50% (21/42), P = 0.19]. Vitamin D supplementation may enhance the effects of PEG-IFN/RBV in HCV genotype 1b-infected patients.

Abstract
We present a case of afferent loop syndrome (ALS) occurring after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) in a patient who had previously undergone total gastrectomy (TG), and review the English-language literature concerning reconstruction procedures following PD in patients who had undergone TG. The patient was a 69-year-old man who had undergone TG reconstruction by a Roux-en-Y method at age 58 years. The patient underwent PD for pancreas head adenocarcinoma. A jejunal limb previously made at the prior TG was used for pancreaticojejunostomy and hepaticojejunostomy. Despite normal patency of the hepaticojejunostomy, he suffered from repeated postoperative cholangitis which was brought on by ALS due to shortness of the jejunal limb (15 cm in length). We therefore performed receliotomy in which the hepaticojejunostomy was disconnected and reconstructed using a new Y limb 40-cm in length constructed in a double Roux-en-Y fashion. The refractory cholangitis resolved immediately after the receliotomy and did not recur. Review of the literature revealed the lack of any current consensus for a standard procedure for reconstruction following PD in patients who had previously undergone TG. This issue warrants further attention, particularly given the expected future increase in the number of PDs in patients with a history of gastric cancer.

Abstract
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal malignancies due to its aggressive growth and rapid development of distant metastases. In this context, mucin 1 (MUC1) overexpression and hypoxia are frequently observed events. However, their functional relationship remains largely unknown. This study provides evidence that MUC1 is overexpressed by hypoxia and contributes to hypoxia-driven angiogenesis. Using the conditioned medium obtained from hypoxia-stressed AsPC1 cells treated with MUC1 siRNAs, we demonstrated that MUC1 enhanced the endothelial tube formation, proliferation and migration ability, which induced by hypoxia-conditioned medium (HCM). In addition, MUC1 was significantly induced by hypoxia, especially in the pancreatic cancer cells derived from metastatic tumors (AsPC1, HPAF2 or Capan1), and MUC1-cytoplasmic tail (MUC1-CT) accumulated in the nucleus under hypoxia. As noted in a previous report, MUC1-CT was recruited to genomic regions upstream of the connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) accompanied with β-catenin and p53, resulting in the hypoxic induction of CTGF. Moreover, hypoxia-induced MUC1 partially regulated two other hypoxia-inducible proangiogenic factors including vascular endothelial growth factor-A and platelet-derived growth factor-B. The neutralization assay revealed that endothelial tube formation induced by HCM was clearly suppressed by antibodies against these three factors, suggesting the importance of these factors in hypoxia-driven angiogenesis. In summary, this is the first report demonstrating a pivotal role of MUC1 in controlling the hypoxia-driven angiogenesis through the regulation of multiple proangiogenic factors in pancreatic cancer. Our findings provide the novel insights into the understanding of complex interactions between pancreatic cancer cells and tumor microenvironments.

Abstract
TLR2 forms heterodimers with TLR1 and TLR6, and regulates host defense mechanisms against pathogens. We examined the role of TLR2 heterodimer signaling in osteoclast formation and inflammatory periodontitis. In co-cultures of mouse bone marrow cells and osteoblasts, a TLR2/6 ligand (diacylated lipopeptide designed from Gram-positive bacteria) markedly induced osteoclast formation. A TLR2/1 ligand (triacylated lipopeptide designed from Gram-negative bacteria) also induced osteoclast formation. The osteoclast formation induced by TLR2/6 and TLR2/1 ligands was completely suppressed by indomethacin. Osteoblasts expressed TLR1, 2, 4, and 6 mRNAs, and both TLR2/6 and TLR2/1 ligands induced the expression of COX-2, mPGES-1, and RANKL mRNA, as well as PGE production in osteoblasts. Both TLR2/6 and TLR2/1 ligands induced the resorption of mandibular alveolar bone in organ cultures, and elicited inflammatory periodontitis in vivo. Therefore, TLR2 heterodimer signaling may play a key role in PGE-mediated inflammatory bone loss in periodontal disease.

Abstract
The present experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of different levels of dietary lactoferrin (LF) on growth performance, physiological status, iron absorption and innate immune response of juvenile Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baeri. Fish were fed with six different rations including 0, 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600 mg LF kg(-1) diet for 8 weeks. At the end of the experiment, samples were collected for estimating the physiological and immunological parameters. Dietary LF did not change the fish growth performance, hematological parameters, serum proteins or hepatic enzymes. Moreover, stress indicators (plasma cortisol, glucose and lactate) were not affected by dietary LF. The iron absorption of fish was considerably affected by LF; thus, plasma iron in LF-treatments greatly declined and the total iron binding capacity (TIBC) significantly increased in fish fed with 800 mg LF kg(-1). In addition, the liver iron content markedly increased in some LF-treatments, but the variation of muscle iron concentration in treatments was insignificant. The amount of mucus secretion and serum bactericidal activity rose in fish fed on dietary LF, although other non-specific immune responses such as mucus bactericidal activity, serum and mucus lysozyme activity, serum peroxidase, serum natural hemolytic complement activity and serum IgM were not influenced by LF. This study revealed the ability of dietary LF to sequester iron, which is an essential nutrient required for the growth of bacteria. LF was also shown to improve some physiological and immunological parameters of Siberian sturgeon, to some extent.

Abstract
A 59-year-old male with chronic kidney disease was diagnosed as having advanced gastric cancer(cT2N1P0H1M0), and CPT-11+CDDP therapy was started for him simultaneously with hemodialysis(HD). Serum CDDP concentrations were measured in the 1st course, and free-platinum(f-Pt)showing the anti-tumor effect was found to be eliminated by HD. Serum f-Pt levels, however, re-elevated until 24 hours after HD completion. Serum concentrations measured in the 15th course showed that f-Pt levels became higher than those observed in the 1st course, suggesting that CDDP was not completely removed by HD. Medical treatment was continued until the liver metastases were judged to be a progression disease at completion of the 18th course. When CDDP was administered to patients on HD, it was necessary to pay attention to various CDDP serum concentrations, and to tailor the dose to a tolerable level in each patient. Such an individual therapy might enable CPT-11+CDDP therapy to be one of the medical treatments of choice for advanced gastric cancer patients on HD.

Abstract
Capsaicin, a transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) ligand, regulates nerve-related pain-sensitive signals, inflammation, and cancer growth. Capsaicin suppresses interleukin-1-induced osteoclast differentiation, but its roles in bone tissues and bone diseases are not known. This study examined the effects of capsaicin on inflammatory bone resorption and prostaglandin E (PGE) production induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in vitro and on bone mass in LPS-treated mice in vivo. Capsaicin suppressed osteoclast formation, bone resorption, and PGE production induced by LPS in vitro. Capsaicin suppressed the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and membrane-bound PGE synthase-1 (mPGES-1) mRNAs and PGE production induced by LPS in osteoblasts. Capsaicin may suppress PGE production by inhibiting the expression of COX-2 and mPGES-1 in osteoblasts and LPS-induced bone resorption by TRPV1 signals because osteoblasts express TRPV1. LPS treatment markedly induced bone loss in the femur in mice, and capsaicin significantly restored the inflammatory bone loss induced by LPS in mice. TRPV1 ligands like capsaicin may therefore be potentially useful as clinical drugs targeting bone diseases associated with inflammatory bone resorption.
