Abstract
Borexino is a liquid scintillation detector located deep underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS, Italy). Thanks to the unmatched radio purity of the scintillator, and to the well understood detector response at low energy, a new limit on the stability of the electron for decay into a neutrino and a single monoenergetic photon was obtained. This new bound, τ≥6.6×10^{28} yr at 90% C.L., is 2 orders of magnitude better than the previous limit.

Abstract
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a rheumatic disease which affects fibrous tissues and muscles; it is characterized by chronic pain and it is often associated with craniomandibular disorders (CMD). 31 patients were assessed from March 2012 to October 2012 through the administration of specific questionnaires and following neurologic and gnatologic assessment. A relevant corre-lation between FM and CMD emerges from the present study, as 80.6% of our patients report CMD symptoms with high prevalence of myofascial pain (84%). Multivariate regression analysis revealed that the patients in the present study did not differ in score of quality of life questionnaires from patients with fibromyalgia. The neuropathic pain diagnostic question-naire (DN4) scores were positively affected by belonging to group II of Research Diagnostic Criteria of Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/ TDM) classification, suggesting the possibility of a neuropathic component in chronic pain in this CMD group, as already speculated in our study on the correlation between burning mouth syndrome and CMD and by other au-thors in studies on chronic low back pain. However, further clinic and instrumental studies are needed in order to test this as-sumption.

Abstract
The decays of (214)Po into (210)Pb and of (212)Po into (208)Pb tagged by the previous decays from (214)Bi and (212)Bi have been studied inserting quartz vials inside the Counting Test Facility (CTF) at the underground laboratory in Gran Sasso (LNGS). We find that the mean lifetime of (214)Po is (236.00 ± 0.42(stat) ± 0.15(syst)) μs and that of (212)Po is (425.1 ± 0.9(stat) ± 1.2(syst)) ns. Our results are compatible with previous measurements, have a much better signal to background ratio, and reduce the overall uncertainties.

Abstract
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a well-known cause of severe and potentially life-threatening infections among hematological patients. A prospective epidemiological surveillance program ongoing at our Hematology Unit revealed an increase over time of P. aeruginosa bloodstream infections (BSI). Their impact on outcome and antibiotic susceptibility was analyzed. BSI which consecutively occurred at our institution during a 70-month period were evaluated and correlated with type of pathogen, status of underlying disease, neutropenia, previous antibiotic therapy, resistance to antibiotics, and outcome. During the observation period, 441 BSI were recorded. Frequency of Gram-negative BSI was higher than that of other pathogens (57.3%). Overall, 66 P. aeruginosa BSI were recorded; 22 out of 66 were multiresistant (MR P. aeruginosa). Thirty-day mortality for all BSI was 11.3%; it was 27.3% for P. aeruginosa BSI and 36.4% for MR P. aeruginosa. At multivariate analysis, only active hematological disease and P. aeruginosa BSI were associated to an increased risk of death. For MR P. aeruginosa, BSI mortality was 83.3% vs. 18.8% when empiric therapy included or not an antibiotic with in vitro activity against P. aeruginosa (p=0.011). Together with active disease, the emergence of P. aeruginosa BSI, particularly if multiresistant, was responsible for an increased risk of death among hematological patients at our institution. In this scenario, reconsidering the type of combination antibiotic therapy to be used as empiric treatment of neutropenic fever was worthwhile.

Abstract
We observed, for the first time, solar neutrinos in the 1.0-1.5 MeV energy range. We determined the rate of pep solar neutrino interactions in Borexino to be 3.1±0.6{stat}±0.3{syst} counts/(day·100 ton). Assuming the pep neutrino flux predicted by the standard solar model, we obtained a constraint on the CNO solar neutrino interaction rate of <7.9 counts/(day·100 ton) (95% C.L.). The absence of the solar neutrino signal is disfavored at 99.97% C.L., while the absence of the pep signal is disfavored at 98% C.L. The necessary sensitivity was achieved by adopting data analysis techniques for the rejection of cosmogenic {11}C, the dominant background in the 1-2 MeV region. Assuming the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein large mixing angle solution to solar neutrino oscillations, these values correspond to solar neutrino fluxes of (1.6±0.3)×10{8} cm{-2} s^{-1} and <7.7×10{8} cm{-2} s{-1} (95% C.L.), respectively, in agreement with both the high and low metallicity standard solar models. These results represent the first direct evidence of the pep neutrino signal and the strongest constraint of the CNO solar neutrino flux to date.

Abstract
We recently identified in prostate tumors (PCa) a transcriptional prognostic signature comprising a significant number of genes differentially regulated in patients with worse clinical outcome. Induction of up-regulated genes was due to chromatin remodeling by a combinatorial complex between estrogen receptor (ER)-β and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). Here we show that this complex can also repress transcription of prognostic genes that are down-regulated in PCa, such as the glutathione transferase gene GSTP1. Silencing of GSTP1 is a common early event in prostate carcinogenesis, frequently caused by promoter hypermethylation. We validated loss of glutathione transferase (GST) P1-1 expression in vivo, in tissue microarrays from a retrospective cohort of patients, and correlated it with decreased disease-specific survival. Furthermore, we show that in PCa cultured cells ERβ/eNOS causes GSTP1 repression by being recruited at estrogen responsive elements in the gene promoter with consequential remodeling of local chromatin. Treatment with ERβ antagonist or its natural ligand 5α-androstane-3β,17β-diol, eNOS inhibitors or ERβ small interference RNA abrogated the binding and reversed GSTP1 silencing, demonstrating the direct involvement of the complex. In vitro, GSTP1 silencing by ERβ/eNOS was specific for cells from patients with worse clinical outcome where it appeared the sole mechanism regulating GSTP1 expression because no promoter hypermethylation was present. However, in vivo chromatin immunoprecipitation assays on fresh PCa tissues demonstrated that silencing by ERβ/eNOS can coexist with promoter hypermethylation. Our findings reveal that the ERβ/eNOS complex can exert transcriptional repression and suggest that this may represent an epigenetic event favoring inactivation of the GSTP1 locus by methylation. Moreover, abrogation of ERβ/eNOS function by 3β-adiol emphasizes the significance of circulating or locally produced sex steroid hormones or their metabolites in PCa biology with relevant clinical/therapeutic implications.

Abstract
The rate of neutrino-electron elastic scattering interactions from 862 keV (7)Be solar neutrinos in Borexino is determined to be 46.0±1.5(stat)(-1.6)(+1.5)(syst) counts/(day·100 ton). This corresponds to a ν(e)-equivalent (7)Be solar neutrino flux of (3.10±0.15)×10(9) cm(-2) s(-1) and, under the assumption of ν(e) transition to other active neutrino flavours, yields an electron neutrino survival probability of 0.51±0.07 at 862 keV. The no flavor change hypothesis is ruled out at 5.0 σ. A global solar neutrino analysis with free fluxes determines Φ(pp)=6.06(-0.06)(+0.02)×10(10) cm(-2) s(-1) and Φ(CNO)<1.3×10(9) cm(-2) s(-1) (95% C.L.). These results significantly improve the precision with which the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein large mixing angle neutrino oscillation model is experimentally tested at low energy.

Abstract
AIMS Subjects who are at increased risk of developing diabetes may have increased glycaemic variability associated with endothelial dysfunction and possibly subclinical atherosclerosis, which may lead to increased cardiovascular risk observed at the time of diabetes diagnosis. To investigate this hypothesis, we measured endothelial function, carotid intima-media thickness and glycaemic variability using 48-h continuous subcutaneous glucose monitoring in 3 groups of overweight or obese subjects--those without the metabolic syndrome, and those with the metabolic syndrome with or without newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes. METHODS Consecutive subjects, aged 30-65 years with a body mass index >or= 25 kg/m(2) were recruited. Patients were classified as with or without the metabolic syndrome,or as metabolic syndrome with newly diagnosed Type 2 DM. Glycaemic variability was calculated in terms of the coefficient of variation. Endothelial function was measured using brachial artery flow-mediated dilation. RESULTS We identified 75 subjects. Mean flow mediated dilation decreased (P < 0.001) and carotid intima-media thickness increased (P < 0.05) across groups. Flow mediated dilation predictors included mean 48-h continuous subcutaneous glucose monitoring values (beta = -0.022; P < 0.005) and the coefficient of variation (beta = -0.10; P = 0.01). Carotid intima-media thickness predictors included age (beta = 0.009; P < 0.001) and flow mediated dilation (beta = -0.014; P = 0.076). Patients re-stratified according to cut-offs for mean 48-h glycaemia and variability demonstrated that subjects with high mean glycaemia but low coefficient of variability had similar flow mediated dilation and carotid intima-media thickness to subjects with low mean glycaemia but high coefficient of variation. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that glycaemic variability influences endothelial function even in non-diabetic subjects. Such variability may explain the increased cardiovascular risk observed in patients prior to developing overt Type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Oral cavity lymphoma (OCL) seems to occur more frequently in HIV-positive patients, but it is presently unknown whether HIV-related immune deficit plays a role in modifying the prevalence and the characteristics of these lymphomas. To clarify this issue, we compared OCL occurring in immunocompetent and HIV-positive patients. A comparison was made between cases of OCL occurring among 543 and 123 NHL consecutively diagnosed at a single center in immunocompetent and HIV-positive patients respectively. The prevalence of oral cavity involvement at diagnosis was significantly lower in the immunocompetent subgroup (HIV-negative: 1.66%; HIV-positive: 7.3%, P = 0.002). Extranodal T/NK nasal-nasal-type lymphoma (ET/NK-NL) was observed in 3 of 9 immunocompetent patients, whereas plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) was observed in 3 of 9 HIV-positive patients. EBV expression correlated with HIV-positivity. Response to treatment was similar between the two subgroups, but the overall prognosis was significantly worse among HIV-positive patients. Median survival was 34 months in immunocompetent vs. 9 months in HIV-positive patients (P < 0.01). A higher frequency of oral cavity lymphoma was associated with HIV infection. ET/NK-NL and PBL seemed to be clinical entities characteristically related to immunocompetent and HIV-positive subgroups, respectively. Chemotherapy was feasible and effective in both subgroups, although a poor prognosis was associated with immunodeficiency.

Abstract
Hemophagocytic syndrome (HS) may occur as a consequence of herpes viral infections. Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8)/Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus has so far been recognized as a trigger of HS only in immunosuppressed subjects or in patients with Kaposi sarcoma and/or HHV-8-related lymphoproliferative diseases. We report two Italian human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative elderly men who developed an HS with a rapidly fatal course, following treatment with corticosteroids for autoimmune hemolytic anemia. An overwhelming active infection with HHV-8 was unequivocally documented by molecular and immunohistochemical methods, in the absence of HHV-8-related tumors. The occurrence of HHV-8-associated HS, although rare, may be considered, even out of the HIV or the transplantation settings, at least in areas endemic for HHV-8 infection.

Abstract
7583 Background: The introduction of HAART has significantly improved the outcome of pts with HD-HIV. However there are no data on the long-term follow-up of HD-HIV pts treated with conventional chemotherapy (CT) regimens and concomitant HAART. In 2002, we reported the results of a prospective phase II study with the intensive 12-week CT with adjuvant radiotherapy (Stanford V) and concomitant HAART in 59 pts with HD-HIV, a well-known unfavorable subgroup of HD (Spina et al. Blood 2002; 100:1984–1988). Methods: To analyze the long-term outcome of patients included in the Stanford V and HAART protocol. Results: The median follow-up is 53 months (range 3–104 months The overall survival (OS) is 59%, the freedom from progression (FFP) is 62% and the disease free survival (DFS) is 72%. The 5-year probability of OS was significantly different in pts with an international prognostic score (IPS) <3 in comparison to that of pts with an IPS >2 (84% vs 36%, p = 0.001). Similarly, the percentages of FFP at 5 years in these groups were 72% and 45% (p = 0.03). No significant side effects have been observed so far. Conclusions: After a median follow-up of 4.5 years, 72% of pts with this unfavorable subgroup and IPS <3 is free from progression, superimposable to that observed in the general population with comparable adverse prognostic factors. Therefore, Stanford V is a very effective regimen in pts with HD-HIV in the long-term analysis. Supported by AIRC and ISS grants. No significant financial relationships to disclose.
