Abstract
At present Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is becoming one of the important global health problems. This study was done to evaluate the changes of percent saturation of oxygen in COPD patients in comparison to healthy person. This analytical type of cross sectional study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2018 to June 2019. A total number of 160 male subjects, age ranged from 30-70 years was included in this study. Among them, eighty (80) male COPD subjects were taken as study group (Group II) and eighty (80) age matched male healthy subjects were taken as control group (Group I). Percent saturation of oxygen was estimated by pulse oximeter. Data were expressed as mean±SD and statistical significance of difference among the group was calculated by unpaired students' 't' test. The mean±SD of percent saturation of oxygen of Group I and Group II were 98.30±0.74% & 90.65±3.27% respectively. The mean±SD of percent saturation of oxygen was significantly lower in study group in comparison with control group. Patients with COPD with greater changes in percent saturation of oxygen causes more frequent hospitalization and increased mortality and morbidity due to COPD related complications. So assessment of this parameter is important for prevention of complication related to COPD for leading a healthy life.

Abstract
Type-2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes, accounting for about 90% of all diabetes. This study was done to assess the Serum Zinc status and Glycated Hemoglobin in type-2 diabetic patients in order to compare this parameter with healthy subjects. This analytical type of cross sectional study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2018 to June 2019. A total number of 140 subjects, age was ranged from 35-65 years were included in this study. Among them, seventy (70) type-2 diabetic patients were taken as study group (Group II) and seventy (70) age matched healthy subjects were taken as control group (Group I). Group I again subdivided into control group male (Group IA) and control group female (Group IB). Group II also subdivided into study group male (Group IIA) and study group female (Group IIB). Data were expressed as mean±SE and statistical significance of difference among the group was calculated by unpaired students' 't' test. Therefore, by this study we recommended that routine estimation of this parameter is important for prevention of complication related to diabetes for leading a healthy life.

Abstract
Hypertension is a major public health problem of adult population across the globe that significantly increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and blindness. It is one of the leading cause of premature death worldwide. Aim of the study was to evaluate serum uric acid and serum creatinine in male hypertensive patients in order to compare these parameters with male normotensive subjects. This analytical type of cross sectional study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2018 to June 2019. A total number of 200 male subjects, age ranged from 30-65 years was included in this study. Among them, hundred (100) hypertensive subjects were taken as study group (Group II) and hundred (100) ages matched normotensive male subjects were taken as control group (Group I). Data were expressed as mean±SD and statistical significance of difference among the group was calculated by unpaired student's 't' test. In this study we found that serum uric acid and serum creatinine was significantly increased in study group in comparison with control group. Based on the study carried out it is concluded that there is definite relationship of serum uric acid and serum creatinine with hypertension. Therefore, serum uric acid and serum creatinine should be measured in all hypertensive subjects for prevention of devastating consequences of hypertension and thus can combat morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
Cigarette smoking is a practice in which tobacco (leaf of Nicotina Tabacum) is burned and the smoke (heterogeneous aerosol) is tasted or inhaled. Smoking may be linked to insulin resistance that leads to impaired glucose and lipid metabolism. Aim of the study was to assess the levels of fasting serum glucose level in healthy male cigarette smokers in order to compare this parameter with healthy non smokers. This comparative study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2013 to June 2014. One hundred healthy male subjects (75 male were cigarette smokers as study group and 25 male were non smokers as control group) aged between 16 to 40 years were enrolled in this study. Fasting serum glucose was estimated by GOD-PAP Method. Data were expressed as mean±SD and statistical significance of difference among the group was calculated by unpaired students''t' test. The mean±SD fasting serum glucose (FSG) levels were higher in smoker group in comparison to the non smoker group. There were gradual increases in FSG levels in the smokers as the duration of smoking was increased and these were 4.75±0.88, 5.12±0.67, 5.29±0.47 and 5.58±2.05mmol/L in group I, IIA, IIB and IIC respectively. This study concludes cigarette smoking impair the carbohydrate metabolism and increase fasting serum glucose level in accordance with the duration of smoking.

Abstract
This cross-sectional analytical study was carried out to observe serum magnesium in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and was performed in the department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from January 2016 to December 2016. For this purpose, a total number of 200 subjects of both sexes with age ranged from 30-60 years were selected of whom 100 were type 2 diabetic person and 100 were apparently healthy. Serum magnesium was significantly lower (p<0.0001) in both male and female of the study group in comparison to healthy control group. From this study, it may conclude that type 2 persons are considered to have significant positive relation for formation of hypomagnesaemia. So, prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus by taking necessary steps like regular physical exercise, intake of healthy diet and behavior therapy may supplementation of magnesium help in prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus related complication.

Abstract
This cross-sectional and population based study was carried out in four randomly selected Upazila of four districts of Dhaka division by the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh from October 2014 to March 2015 to detect the prevalence of Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN) among women in four Upazila of Dhaka division of Bangladesh. Married women ages between 25-55 years, mentally able to provide informed consent were recruited. Women with chronic illness, pregnancy and women with previous treatment for CIN were excluded from the study. During 6 months of study period, a total 1165 cases were examined. Most of the attendants were between 30-35 years. Muslim participants were more than Hindus (95.27% vs. 4.37%) and 0.34% attendants were from Christian religion. Among the participants majority (42.37%) of them were up to primary level. Most (98.45%) of the women were house wife and most (54.5%) of them had monthly family income between Tk. 5001-10000. It was observed that 6.5% of their husband had 2 wives and 1.2% had 3 wives. Regarding their living status, 90.6% were living together, 8.6% of their husband was living at their work place & 0.7% was living abroad. About 30.4% of their husbands were farmer others were businessman, unemployed, driver and other service holder. It was found that 67(5.8%) out of 1165 cases were diagnosed as VIA +ve cases. Among 1165 cases 94.2% were normal, 4.7% were diagnosed as CIN I, 1% were CIN II and none of them was CIN III. Colposcopy guided punch biopsy were taken from all CIN cases and found that among 67 cases of colposcopically diagnosed CIN, histopathologically 28(2.4%) cases were diagnosed as normal, 32(2.7%) cases were CIN I, 4(0.3%) cases were CIN II & 3 (0.3%) cases were CIN III. In this study, crude prevalence of CIN I, CIN II and CIN III were 2.7%, 0.3% and 0.3% respectively. This study provides the first population-based prevalence of CIN in Bangladesh which will guide the Government of Bangladesh to upgrade the activities of already existing cervical cancer screening programme.

The systolic and diastolic blood pressures were significantly elevated among smokers as compared with non smokers. This study was done to assess the blood pressure in healthy male cigarette smokers in order to compare this parameter with healthy male non smokers. This comparative study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh, from July 2013 to June 2014. One hundred healthy male subjects (75 male were cigarette smokers as study group and 25 male were non smokers as control group) aged between 16 to 40 years were enrolled in this study. Blood pressure of the individual was measured by an android sphygmomanometer with appropriate size of cuff and stethoscope. Data were expressed as mean±SD and statistical significance of difference among the groups was calculated by unpaired student's 't' test. The mean±SD of systolic and diastolic blood pressure were higher in smoker group in comparison to the non smoker group. There were gradual increases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the smokers as the duration of smoking was increased. This study concludes cigarette smoking increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure in accordance with the duration of smoking.

Menopause occupying one-third of women's life and women face various physiological, psychological and biochemical changes during this period. The systolic and diastolic blood pressure was significantly elevated among postmenopausal women as compared with reproductive women. To assess the blood pressure changes in healthy postmenopausal women in order to compare this parameter with healthy reproductive women, this analytical type of comparative study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from January 2017 to December 2017. Two hundred healthy women (100 female were postmenopausal as study group and 100 female were reproductive women as control group) aged between 25 to 65 years were enrolled in this study. Blood pressure of the individual was measured by an android sphygmomanometer and stethoscope with appropriate size of cuff. Data were expressed as mean±SD and statistical significance of difference among the group was calculated by unpaired students' 't' test. The mean±SD of systolic and diastolic blood pressure were higher in postmenopausal group in comparison to the reproductive women group. This study concludes systolic and diastolic blood pressure increases in postmenopausal women.

Diabetes mellitus is a complex disorder involving multiple organ systems and is the primary modifiable risk factor for heart disease. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus have an increased prevalence of lipid abnormalities. A timely intervention to normalize circulating lipids could decrease the probability of cardiovascular complications. Aim of the study was to assess the relationship of serum High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglyceride (TG) with type 2 diabetic patients in order to compare this parameter with non-diabetic subjects. This analytical type of cross sectional study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2017 to June 2018. A total number of 160 female subjects, age ranged from 35-65 years was included in this study. Among them, eighty (80) type 2 diabetic patients were taken as study group (Group II) and eighty (80) ages matched non-diabetic female healthy subjects were taken as control group (Group I). Data were expressed as mean±SD and statistical significance of difference among the group was calculated by student's unpaired (t) test. The mean±SD of serum HDL-C of control group and study group were 49.60±2.18mg/dl & 28.58±2.80mg/dl respectively. In study group serum HDL-C was decreased. The mean±SD of serum Triglyceride of Group I and Group II were 122.06±11.65mg/dl & 221.84±11.79mg/dl respectively. In group II serum triglyceride was increased. Serum HDL cholesterol and serum triglyceride were significant in study group in comparison with control group. Therefore, by this study we recommended that routine estimation of these parameters is important for prevention of complication related to type 2 diabetes mellitus for leading a healthy life.

Abstract
The present cross-sectional analytical study was carried out in the department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, from January 2016 to December 2016 to observe serum total cholesterol in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. For this purpose, a total number of 200 subjects of both sexes with age ranged from 30-60 years were selected of whom 100 were type 2 diabetic person and 100 were apparently healthy. Serum total cholesterol was significantly higher (p<0.0001) in both male and female of the study group in comparison to healthy control group. From this study, it may conclude that type 2 persons are considered to have significant positive relation for formation of hypercholesterolemia, and metabolic abnormalities that have high morbidity and mortality. So, prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus by taking necessary steps like regular physical exercise, intake of healthy diet and behavior therapy may help in prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus related complication.

Abstract
Asthma is a common pulmonary disorder characterizerized by airway inflammation, airway- hyper reactivity, and reversible airflow obstruction. The classic triad of symptoms is wheezing, chronic episodic dyspnea and chronic cough. The prevalence of asthma increased steadily over the latter part of the last century, first in the developed and then in the developing world. The number of people with asthma in the world may be as high as 334 million. Asthma in Bangladesh appears to be a substantial public health problem: an estimated 11.6 million people including 4.1 million children suffer from asthma-related symptoms. A cross sectional study was conducted from January 1999 to August 1999 on 5642 Bangladeshi people and another same study carried out from November 2009 to April 2010 on 8088 subjects. In 1999 the prevalence of asthma was 6.9% whereas in 2010 it is 6.96%. Airway resistance is always increased during the asthmatic attack. Airways obstruction, such as that caused by asthma, results in a reduced and variable Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR). PEFR is classically reduced in asthma. Recent asthma guidelines recommended the assessment of severity levels based on the most severe symptoms and peak expiratory flow rate. This descriptive type of cross-sectional study was done to find the changes of Peak expiratory flow rate in adult asthmatic patients and carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2014 to January 2016. Fifty (50) male and 50 (fifty) female adult asthmatic patients aged 18-60 years were included in the study group. They are enrolled from the Department of Medicine, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh and also from locality. For comparison age matched 50 male and 50 female apparently healthy persons were also studied as control. PEFR was estimated by Wright's Peak flow meter. For statistical analysis unpaired student's 't' test was used. Mean PEFR were significantly decreased in study group in comparison to control group and the result was statistically significant (p<0.001). From this study, it may be concluded that peak expiratory flow rate was decreased in asthmatic patient and there was a significant relation of decline lung function.

Abstract
In the present study hemoglobin concentration were estimated in chronic kidney diseased patient to observe the frequency of low hemoglobin level in chronic kidney diseased (CKD) patient and to assess the incidence of anaemia. This cross sectional study was carried out in the department of Physiology of Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2014 to June 2015. For this purpose, total 200 subjects with age ranged from 25 to 60 years were selected and divided into100 healthy persons as control group and 100 CKD patients as study group. Both control and study group were further divided into 50 male and 50 female. Hemoglobin concentration was evaluated by the Cyanmethemoglobin (CMG) method. Statistical analysis of data was done by unpaired student's 't' test. The results showed that hemoglobin levels decreased significantly in chronic kidney diseased patients than the normal healthy persons. The decreasing frequency of hemoglobin level in CKD may predispose the patients to anemia and increasing the other complications.

Abstract
Asthma has been defined as a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways that is associated with recruitment of inflammatory cells and the clinical development of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and cough. The prevalence of asthma increased steadily over the latter part of the last century, first in the developed and then in the developing world. Current estimates suggest that asthma affects 300 million people worldwide, with a predicted additional 100 million people affected by 2025. This cross sectional study was conducted from January 1999 to August 1999 on 5642 Bangladeshi people and another same study carried out from November 2009 to April 2010 on 8088 subjects. In 1999 the prevalence of asthma was 6.9% whereas in 2010 it is 6.96%. Both asthma and hypertension are spastic disorders of smooth muscle, there is the similarities between these two diseases may predispose the individuals with one disease to the other. This descriptive type of cross-sectional study was done to find the Interaction between hypertension and asthma in adult and carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2014 to January 2016. Fifty (50) male and fifty (50) female adult asthmatic patients aged 18-60 years were included in the study group. They are enrolled from the Department of Medicine, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh and also from locality. For comparison age matched 50 male and 50 female apparently healthy persons were also studied as control. Blood pressure was estimated by auscultatory method by sphygmomanometer. For statistical analysis unpaired student's 't' test was used. Mean blood pressure were significantly increased in study group in comparison to control group and the result was statistically significant (p<0.001). The study findings showed a high prevalence of hypertension among asthmatic patients than non asthmatic healthy persons. From this study, it may be concluded that hypertension and asthma are closely connected.

Abstract
Rubella virus infection during pregnancy is an important cause of blindness, deafness, congenital heart disease, and mental retardation of the foetus. Multiple sero-surveys of rubella antibody among reproductive aged females of Bangladesh showed that 20-30% of them remain susceptible to rubella as rubella vaccination is yet not included in our national immunization program for adolescent and adult girls. The present study was designed to conduct a sero-survey among unmarried girls of 16 to 25 years to assess their serological status in terms of natural rubella infection and vaccinate the rubella susceptible individuals with a single dose of rubella vaccine to evaluate the immunogenicity of the vaccine. A total of 344 randomly selected unmarried, apparently healthy college students were enrolled and investigated for rubella IgG and IgM antibodies at the Department of Virology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka. Girls who were found to be negative for both rubella IgG and IgM were vaccinated with a single dose of rubella vaccine and tested for rubella antibody after four to six weeks of vaccination. Quantitative analysis of rubella IgG showed that a total of 68.87% study population had protective rubella antibody, 29.36% were susceptible to rubella and 1.74% experienced recent rubella infection. After vaccination, rubella antibody positivity was found to be 100% among 99 (98.02%) of 101 vaccinated girls who were tested for anti rubella IgG. There was statistically significant increase (p <0.001, Paired t Test) in anti-Rubella IgG titres among pre-vaccination and post-vaccination sera. The findings of the study showed that it is mandatory to include young girls in the national immunization programme and immunize them with a single dose of rubella vaccine which was found to be 100% effective.

Abstract
Obesity is a disorder of body weight regulatory systems characterized by an accumulation of excess body fat. World Health Organization recommended that 66% of deaths now occur in developing countries and recognizes obesity as a leading risk factor. Obesity is associated with chronic, low grade, systemic inflammation. The inflammatory state play a causal role in the development of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and the metabolic syndrome. This descriptive type of cross sectional study will design to evaluate the relation between obesity with hemoglobin concentration. One hundred obese and 100 normal weight persons from both sexes, aged between 25 to 60 years will be selected from Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh and locality from July 2014 to January 2016. Data are collected through a simple questionnaire after informed consent taken. The result was calculated and analyzed by using SPSS (statistical package for social science, version 11.5). Statistical significance of difference between two groups were evaluated by unpaired Student's 't' test. Data were expressed as Mean±SE. P value less than 0.05 was taken as the level of significance. Anthropometric measurements such as height and weight were taken in meter and kilogram respectively. Pulse, systolic and diastolic blood pressure was measured by aneroid sphygmomanometer (ALPK2, Japan), laboratory analysis of hemoglobin was done by Cyanmethemoglobin Method. In this study we found that hemoglobin concentration is significantly increased in both male and female obese persons.

In this study we found that fasting serum glucose is significantly increased in both male and female obese persons 4.07±0.79mmol/l & 5.58±0.64mmol/l respectively. In obese the values of FBS indicate the subjects are prone to develop cardiovascular & metabolic diseases. That has high morbidity and mortality. Therefore, by this study we recommended that routine estimation of fasting blood sugar is important for prevention of complication related to obesity for leading a healthy life.

Abstract
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways, in which many cells and cellular elements play a role. Asthma is one of the most common diseases globally and currently affects 300 million people. Asthma and obesity have an enormous impact on public health. Since the 1990s, various studies have shown a correlation between an increase in body mass index (BMI) and asthma prevalence. This descriptive type of cross sectional study was done to find the levels of BMI in adult asthmatic patients and carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2014 to January 2016. Fifty male and 50 female adult asthmatic patients aged 18-60 years were included in the study group. They are enrolled from the Department of Medicine, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh and also from locality. For comparison age matched 50 male and 50 female apparently healthy persons were also studied as control. BMI were calculated by weight in kg divided by height in square meter (m²). For statistical analysis unpaired Student's 't' test was used. Mean BMI were significantly increased in both study group in comparison to control group and the result was statistically significant (p<0.001). From this study, it may be concluded that increase body mass index that is overweight or obesity can increase the prevalence and incidence of asthma. Obesity, by means of inflammatory mechanism or changes in lifestyle can trigger asthmatics symptoms in susceptible individuals.

Abstract
Aim Elucidating differences in gene expression may be useful in understanding the molecular pathogenesis and for developing specific markers for the outcome of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. In the present study, expressions of host gene interferon gamma-inducible protein (IP-10), p53, and Foxp3 were studied in hepatocytes of patients with chronic HBV infection to determine a possible link between selected host gene expression and the outcome of HBV infection. Materials and methods The study was conducted in 60 patients with chronic HBV infection and they were divided into four groups: HBV-positive cirrhosis (n = 15), HBV-negative cirrhosis (n = 15), HBV-positive hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (n = 15) and HBV-negative HCC (n = 15). Total messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) extraction was done followed by complementary deoxyribonucleic acid (cDNA) synthesis, and finally gene expression was performed using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. Results IP-10 and p53 gene expressions were lower in HBV-positive cirrhosis, and Foxp3 gene expression was upregulated in HBV-positive cirrhosis in comparison to HBV-negative cirrhosis. The expressions of all the three genes were upregulated among HBV-positive HCC in comparison to HBV-negative HCC. The expression of IP-10, p53, and Foxp3 genes was upregulated in HBV-positive HCC in comparison to HBV-positive cirrhosis. Conclusion This study indicates that there are variations in the expression of the selected genes among cirrhosis and HCC patients with or without HBV. All the three selected genes were more or less upregulated in HBV-positive HCC patients, but only Foxp3 expression was upregulated in HBV-positive cirrhosis. These three particular genes may have a role in the molecular pathogenesis and clinical outcome of HBV-positive cirrhosis and HCC patients. Abstract
Body mass index is an inexpensive and easy method of screening for weight categories that may lead to health problems. Increased BMI in overweight and obese persons is directly associated with an increase in metabolic disease, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus. This Analytical cross sectional study was undertaken to assess the relation between increasing BMI and glycemic control of body through measuring glycosylated hemoglobin. This study was carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2011 to June 2012 on 180 equally divided male and female persons between the age of 25 to 55 years. Age more than 55 years and less than 25 years and diagnosed case of hypothyroidism, cushing's syndrome, polycystic ovary, antipsychotic drug user and regular steroid users were excluded. Non probability purposive type of sampling technique was used for selecting the study subjects. Measurement of body mass index was done as per procedure. Glycosylated hemoglobin was estimated by Boronate Affinity method. Statistical analysis was done by SPSS (version 17.0). Data were expressed as Mean (±SE) and statistical significance of difference among the groups were calculated by unpaired student's 't' test and Pearson's correlation coefficient tests were done as applicable. There was no significant difference of glycosylated hemoglobin level between control and study groups. But there was positive correlation within each group (r=0.255, 0.37 and 0.39 in control, overweight and obese respectively). The observed positive correlation between BMI and glycosylated hemoglobin emphasizes the maintenance of normal BMI to prevent early onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Health education activities highlighting the danger of becoming overweight and obese should be undertaken.

Asthma and anemia associated with acute infections occur both in children and adults. This descriptive type of cross sectional study was done to find out the levels of hemoglobin concentration in adult asthmatic patients and carried out in the Department of Physiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2014 to January 2016. Fifty (50) male and 50 (fifty) female adult asthmatic patients aged 18-60 years were included in the study group. They are enrolled from the Department of Medicine, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh and also from locality. For comparison age matched 50 male and 50 female apparently healthy persons were also studied as control. Hemoglobin concentration was estimated by Cyanmethemoglobin method. For statistical analysis unpaired student's 't' test was used. Mean hemoglobin concentration was significantly decreased in study group in comparison to control group and the result was statistically significant (p<0.001). The study findings showed a high prevalence of anemia among asthmatic patients than non asthmatic healthy persons.

Abstract
In this cross sectional study peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) were estimated in pregnant women during the first trimester of pregnancy and in third trimester of pregnancy, to observe the alteration in airflow rate during pregnancy. This cross sectional study carried out in the Department of Physiology of Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2014 to June 2015. For this purpose, total 300 women with age ranged from 18 to 35 years without any recent history of respiratory diseases were selected and divided into 100 healthy non pregnant women as control group and 200 normal pregnant women as study group. Study group was further subdivided into 100 pregnant women in first trimester and 100 pregnant women in third trimester of pregnancy. The PEFR was estimated by using mini version of Wrights peak flow meter. PEFR was measured during 1st and 3rd trimester of pregnant women and in non pregnant women. In this study, the PEFR significantly decreased both in first and third trimester of pregnancy than that of non pregnant women. Again the PEFR was significantly decreased in 3rd trimester of pregnancy than that of 1st trimester of pregnant women. It may be concluded that PEFR were significantly decreased in pregnancy, most likely due to the mechanical effects of progressively increased size of uterus that progressively decreases lung volumes and capacities.

Abstract
<p><strong>Backgrounds:</strong> As there is no published data regarding the response to Anti-retroviral therapy (ART) among HIV patients from Bangladesh. The present study was designed to determine the immunological and virological responses of HIV infected Bangladeshi adults starting ART. Objectives: To monitor the changes of CD4 and CD8 T-lymphocyte count and Viral load (VL) before and after three and six months of starting ART.</p><p><strong>Methods:</strong> 20 symptomatic HIV infected patients with CD4 T-lymphocyte count of <350 cells/µ] of blood were initiated ART.CD4 and CDS T-lymphocyte counts were estimated by Flowcytometer and VL was dete1mined by real-time PCR technique.</p><p><strong>Results:</strong> The mean CD4 T-lymphocyte count among the sn1dy patients were 177±127 cells/µl before initiation of ART. After ART initiation, their mean CD4 count increased significantly to 368±181 and 452±183 cellshll after three and six months respectively (P<0.0001).The mean CDS T-lymphocyte counts were 901±650 cells/µ! before initiation of ART, which increased to I 085±393 and 1121±372 cells/µl after three and six months respectively after ART initiation (P>0.05). Before ART initiation, the mean VL was 5.25±1.19 log10 (copies/ml) among the study population which became undetectable in 15 (75%) patients after three months of ART and in another 2 (10%) patients after 6 months of ART initiation.</p><p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Our study concluded that, ART is effective in slowing the progression of HIV infection to AIDS with good immunological and virological outcome among the ART initiators.</p>
