Retirement of emeritus medical professors of the University of Chicago and the University of Wisconsin

Limited data from 14 medical professors of two universities suggest that they are like industrial scientists and dentists in retirement. All three types require a preparation for a life of leisure as a component of preparation for retirement.

Transverse myelitis and myelography

A case report of transverse myelitis and optic neuritis is presented in which the latter occurred following a myelogram with iopamidol. The literature relating to neurotoxicity of contrast agents is reviewed, and it is suggested that the optic neuritis may have been a neurotoxic effect of iopamidol.

The impact of converting to an all frozen blood system in a large regional blood center

We studied the impact of converting to an all frozen blood system in a large regional blood center. Several basic assumptions were made including the availability of a sterile docking device which would increase the shelf life of deglycerolized blood to 72 hours. Our study indicated that the most economical manner in which to implement such a program would be to supply deglycerolized blood to all hospitals transfusing more than 500 units per year and to provide frozen units to hospitals transfusing less then this amount (those hospitals would deglycerolize the blood they use). The estimated total cost of the proposed conversion was 3.9 million dollars or a 76 per cent increase over the present operation. Relative to our present fee structure, the average cost of a unit of blood would increase 80 per cent if only frozen or deglycerolized red blood cells were distributed.

Participation and the voluntary sector: the independent contribution

This article is an attempt to create a general theoretical model or ‘scale’ for categorizing voluntary organizations chiefly concerned with social service provision. Consumer participation, which the author believes has positive and particular advantages in voluntary organizations, is taken as one element in the categorization. He discusses what participation may or should mean, and the reasons why it is so rarely found. Where it exists it tends to involve the participation of staff rather than ‘clients’, which may result in more discussion than action. The article also discusses how an organization's position on the ‘scale’ can change. Voluntary organizations which start out as small, highly-participating, self-help organizations tend to become more elitist and altruistic with success and growth. The author suggests that organizations with a higher degree of consumer participation may be more responsive to social change and its consequences, more flexible and even more cost-effective than more traditionally organized institutions and may also be better able to take advantage of the independence afforded only to voluntary organizations in an increasingly state-dominated society.

Composition, quaternary structure, and catalytic properties of D-ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase from Euglena gracilis

D-Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase has been purified in one step by sedimenting extracts of autotrophically-grown Euglena gracilis into a linear 0.2-0.8 M sucrose density gradient. The resultant product was pure by the criteria of disc electrophoresis in gels polymerized from 5 or 7.5% acrylamide and sedimentation. The molecular weight of the enzyme estimated by density gradient centrifugation and electrophoresis in gels polymerized from various concentrations of acrylamide was 5.25 X 10(5). The S20,W was 16.4 S. Dissociation and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate established that the enzyme was composed of two types of subunits (mr 50,000 and 15,000). The oligomeric structure was visualized through negative staining and transmission electron microscopy leading to a model for the quaternary structure. Although the enzyme was moderately unstable, the estimated maximal specific activity was 1.6 mumol CO2 fixed min-1 mg protien-1 at 30 degrees C and pH 8.0 Km values were 2.2 m M, 15. 1 MUM and 0.63 mM for Mg2+, ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate, and CO2, respectively, when measured under air. 6-Phospho-D-gluconate was a noncompetitive inhibitor with respect to ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (Ki = 0.04 mM). Oxygen was a competitive inhibitor with respect to CO2 suggesting that the enzyme was also an oxygenase. The latter was confirmed by experiments showing a molar equivalence between ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate-dependent oxygen consumption and phosphoglycerate production.

Effects of cognitive interference on performance in relation to psychopathology

The construct of cognitive style in relation to cognitive disposition was investigated by means of a task involving conflicting cues or cognitive distractors, the Stroop test. Differences in cognitive disposition were obtained by using Ss, showing psychopathology: schizophrenics, psychoneurotics and normals. Schizophrenics showed the most interference from the distractors and normals the least. These results are discussed according to Peters' intensional-extensional hypothesis indicating that an intensional attentive attitude is more characteristic of the thought processes of schizophrenics than of normals and that psychoneurotics hold an intermediate position between these two extreme groups.

Hypoallergenic breads. Wheat content of products available in the San Francisco Bay area

Substantial amounts of soluble wheat antigens have been found in breads sold as "wheat-free" in the San Francisco Bay Area. Physicians with patients on a wheat-free diet are urged to exercise careful supervision over their patients' choice of such breads.

BRONCHIAL ASTHMA IN ADULTS-Causes and Treatment

Food and inhalant allergens were of about equal importance in producing bronchial asthma in 907 adults between the ages of 15 and 55 years.Drug and especially bacterial allergens were infrequent causes.Psychogenic factors may activate or exaggerate causes mentioned but were not the sole cause of any case in this series. Food allergens are best studied and controlled by the standardized cereal-free elimination diet and at times other elimination diets. Test-negative diets usually fail because of the fallibility of both negative and positive skin tests. Inhalant allergy is controlled by the elimination of causative allergens by varying degrees of environmental control and often by pollen and dust filters in the window. Desensitization is necessary against those allergens that cannot be removed from the environment. Dilutions in the millions and billions may be required. Morphine and other opiates, Demerol, chloral, paraldehyde and large or moderate doses of barbiturates are contraindicated in bronchial asthma, as emphasized by deaths resulting from the use of them. Bronchoscopy is indicated for bronchial obstruction due to inspissated mucous plugs, but the danger of the procedure, especially with much sedation, must be recognized. When secondary infection is probable, the use of sulfadiazine, penicillin, aureomycin and chloramphenicol must be considered.
