Abstract
The corpus luteum (CL) of the estrous cycle in the cow is a dynamic organ which has a life time of approximately 17-18 days. The main function of the CL is to secrete a large amount of progesterone (P) thereby supporting the achievement of pregnancy. As the CL matures, the steroidogenic cells establish contact with many capillaries and the matured CL is composed of many vascular endothelial cells that account for up to 50% of all CL cells. The bovine CL produces several major angiogenic and vasoactive foctors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), angiopoietin-1 and -2 (ANPT-1 and -2), prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha)), endothelin-1 (EDN1), angiotensin II (Ang II) and nitric oxide (NO). These factors regulate P secretion directly and/or indirectly within the CL. Moreover, different actions of PGF(2alpha) in the early cycle CL (non-luteolytic) and the mid cycle CL (luteolytic) may provide insight into the luteolysis cascade in the cow. The aim of the present review is to describe the current concepts of the local mechanisms for the cascade of development and regression of the bovine CL as regulated by luteal angiogenic and vasoactive factors.

Abstract
A 63-year-old female, who was noticed a chest mass approximately 4 cm in diameter on a chest X-ray, was admitted to our hospital. We thought that it was a benign chest wall tumor such as a neurogenic tumor by the findings of the chest computed tomography (CT). Resection of the tumor was performed. Neurogenic tumor was suspected by the frozen section. But it turned out to be a thymoma type AB in permanent preparation. Since she had undergone thymothymectomy 23-years ago, the tumor was considered to be a pleural recurrence of thymoma. We thoroughly checked the chest CT again, and detected another tumor at the right of the thoracic vertebra. Third surgery was performed and the tumor was resected. We experienced recurrence of thymoma as pleural dissemination 23-years after surgery. Thymomas are low-grade malignant tumor, but long-term clinical follow-up is necessary.

Abstract
The Notch signaling pathway regulates a diverse array of cell types and cellular processes and is tightly regulated by ligand binding. Both canonical and noncanonical Notch ligands have been identified that may account for some of the pleiotropic nature associated with Notch signaling. This review focuses on the molecular mechanisms by which Notch ligands function as signaling agonists and antagonists, and discusses different modes of activating ligands as well as findings that support intrinsic ligand signaling activity independent of Notch. Post-translational modification, proteolytic processing, endocytosis and membrane trafficking, as well as interactions with the actin cytoskeleton may contribute to the recently appreciated multifunctionality of Notch ligands. The regulation of Notch ligand expression by other signaling pathways provides a mechanism to coordinate Notch signaling with multiple cellular and developmental cues. The association of Notch ligands with inherited human disorders and cancer highlights the importance of understanding the molecular nature and activities intrinsic to Notch ligands. Abstract
The bovine placenta contains local vasoactive-related systems, including angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), endothelin-1 (ET-1), ET-A receptor (ETAR) and ET-B receptor (ETBR), as well as arachidonic acid (AA) cascade-related enzymes, such as cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2), prostaglandin E-synthase (PGES) and prostaglandin F-synthase (PGFS). The mRNA expression of these molecules was examined in bovine placentomes (caruncles and cotyledons) collected immediately (0 h) and 6h after spontaneous parturition from 15 cows with early (fetal membranes released within 6 h of parturition) or late (fetal membranes released 6-12 h after parturition) detachment, as well as from 15 pregnant cows at a slaughterhouse. Significant differences were observed in expression of ET-1, ETAR and ETBR mRNAs between gestation and the postpartum period in both caruncles and cotyledons. Significant differences were also found between 0 and 6 h postpartum in the expression of ETBR mRNA in the early detachment group and PGES mRNA in the early and late detachment groups. Compared to PGFS, both Cox-2 and PGES exhibited opposite mRNA expression patterns during gestation and the postpartum period. The vasoactive-related peptide systems and AA cascade-related enzymes may mediate placental development and fetal membrane detachment after parturition in cattle.

Abstract
Prostaglandin F(2 alpha) (PGF(2 alpha)) induces luteolysis in the mid but not in the early luteal phase; despite this, both the early and the mid corpus luteum (CL) have PGF(2 alpha) receptor (FPr). We previously indicated that the luteal blood flow surrounding the CL drastically increases prior to a decrease of progesterone (P) in the cows, suggesting that an acute increase of luteal blood flow may be an early sign of luteolysis in response to PGF(2 alpha) and that this may be induced by a vasorelaxant nitric oxide (NO). The aim of this study was to investigate the luteal stage-dependent and the site-restricted effect of PGF(2 alpha) and NO on the mRNA expressions and P secretion. To mimic the local luteal region both of peripheral and central areas of the CL, we utilized co-cultures using bovine aorta endothelial cells (EC), smooth muscle cells (SMC) and luteinizing granulosa cells (GC) or fully-luteinized GC. PGF(2 alpha) stimulated the expression of endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) mRNA at 0.5 h in mix-cultures of EC and SMC with fully-luteinized GC but not with luteinizing GC. The expression of eNOS mRNA in EC was increased by PGF(2 alpha) at 1 h only when EC was cultured together with fully-luteinized GC but not with luteinizing GC. In all co-cultures, PGF(2 alpha) did not affect the mRNA expression of FPr. Treatment of NO donor inhibited P secretion at 0.5 h. In conclusion, the present study suggests that the coexistence of the mature luteal cells (fully-luteinized GC) with EC/SMC may be crucial for acquiring functional NO synthesis induced by PGF(2 alpha).

Relationship between plasma beta-carotene concentrations during the peripartum period and ovulation in the first follicular wave postpartum in dairy cows. Anim Reprod Sci 2008; 111:105-11. Abstract
Beta-carotene functions independently of vitamin A in the reproductive performance of dairy cows. The concentrations of beta-carotene in plasma decrease during the dry period, and reach a nadir in about the first week postpartum. This coincides with a negative energy balance, which affects the onset of the first ovulation in early postpartum cows. Thus, we hypothesised that plasma beta-carotene concentrations during the peripartum period may affect ovulation in the first follicular wave postpartum in dairy cows. The aim of the present study was to investigate changes in the profiles of plasma beta-carotene concentrations during the peripartum period in ovulatory and anovulatory cows during the first follicular wave postpartum. We used 22 multiparous Holstein cows, which were fed a total mixed ration consisting of grass, corn silage and concentrate, and collected blood samples for beta-carotene and progesterone analysis from week 3 prepartum to week 3 postpartum when the period of day 0-6 after parturition was regarded as the parturient week (week 0). The first ovulation was confirmed using the profile of plasma progesterone concentrations and colour Doppler ultrasound. Thirteen cows ovulated during the first postpartum follicular wave. Parity, the dry-off period, calving interval, mastitis episodes, and actual 305 days' milk yield during the previous lactation, and milk composition in the last month during the previous lactation in this study did not differ between ovulatory and anovulatory cows. Differences in the plasma beta-carotene profile were observed between ovulatory and anovulatory cows. Plasma beta-carotene concentrations at week 3 prepartum were greater in ovulatory cows (2.97+/-0.24 mg/L) than in anovulatory cows (1.53+/-0.14 mg/L; P<0.001), after that its concentrations in ovulatory cows decreased and reached the lowest level at week 1 postpartum, although its concentrations in anovulatory cows remained unchanged. No differences in plasma beta-carotene concentrations between the two groups were observed postpartum. The present study indicates for the first time that the lower beta-carotene concentrations in plasma during the prepartum period is associated with anovulation during the first follicular wave postpartum.

Abstract
This study was conducted to estimate the effects of kisspeptin-10 on blood concentrations of LH and GH in prepubertal dairy heifers. Heifers received a single injection of 1 mg kisspeptin-10 (n=5) or saline (n=5) intravenously, and serial blood samples were collected at 15-min intervals to analyze the response curves of both LH and GH after injection. Peak-shaped responses were observed for concentrations of LH and GH, and the peaks were observed at 27+/-3 and 75+/-9 min, respectively, after injection, only in heifers injected with kisspeptin-10. These data suggest various possible important links among kisspeptin, the reproductive axis, and also the somatotropic axis in prepubertal Holstein heifers.

Abstract
The corpus luteum (CL) undergoes regression by prostaglandin (PG)F(2alpha) from uterus and endothelin-1 (ET-1) plays an important role during luteolysis as a local mediator of PGF(2alpha) in the cow. Endothelial cells (EC) and luteal cells are main cell types making up the CL and their interactions are vital for CL function. We aimed to examine the relevance of interactions between EC and luteal cells on stimulation of genes which involved ET-1 synthesis by PGF(2alpha). We further focused the impact of maturity of luteal cells on the stimulation of the genes. To make a microenvironment which resembles the CL, we used bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAEC) and luteinizing or fully-luteinized granulosa cells (GC) and evaluated the effect of PGF(2alpha) on the expression for mRNA of ET-1 system by using real-time RT-PCR. PGF(2alpha) stimulated the expression of preproET-1 and endothelin converting enzyme-1 mRNA only in the co-cultures of BAEC with fully-luteinized GC, but not with luteinizing GC. The data suggest that interactions between BAEC and fully-luteinized GC enhance the capability of BAEC to produce ET-1 in response to PGF(2alpha). This mechanism may contribute to the local induction of luteolytic action of PGF(2alpha) which is dependent on the age/maturation of the CL.

Abstract
In Japan, reclaimed wastewater has been recycled widely for non-potable urban applications and it is to be used for sprinkling roads to mitigate heat island in urban areas. To assess the heat island mitigation effects of the sprinkling reclaimed wastewater on water retentive pavement, we carried out a survey at Shiodome-District, Tokyo. The temperatures of air and roads, humidity, and WBGT (Wet-bulb globe temperature) were measured and heat flux was estimated to compare the condition of the areas with/without sprinkling. The following results were obtained. 1) Sprinkling reclaimed wastewater decreased the road surface temperature by 8 degrees during the daytime and by 3 degrees at night: temperatures equal to those on planting zones. Nevertheless sprinkling was done only in the daytime, the temperature decrease effect was not only obtained during the daytime: it continued through the night, due to the water retentive pavement. 2) Sprinkling reclaimed wastewater reduced the amount of sensible heat flux and increased that of latent heat flux. These results suggest that sprinkling reclaimed wastewater on water retentive pavement can effectively mitigate the heat island phenomenon.

Abstract
Sixty-one patients with completely resected non-small cell lung cancer followed by postoperative radiotherapy were retrospectively reviewed. Forty-six patients were male and 15 were female. Ages ranged 34-79 (median 64) years. Squamous cell carcinoma (scc) in 28, adenoca. in 31, large cell ca in 1 and adenoid cystic ca. in 1. Pathological stage was IIA in 1, IIB in 9, IIIA in 41 and IIIB in 10. Over-all 5-year survival rate (OS) was 56.0%, and 5-year disease-free survival rate (DFS) was 39.7%. For IIB, IIIA, IIIB patients, OS were 77.8%, 55.4%, 24.0% respectively. According to purpose of radiotherapy, patients divided into 3 types as local invasion (LI) group (T3-4N0-1, n = 12), lymphnode metastases (LN) group (T1-2N2-3, n = 38) and both advanced (BA) group (T3-4N2-3, n = 8). OS were 71.6%, 50.7%, 46.9% and DFS were 68.6%, 31.0%, 42.9% respectively. In LN group, half of patients with scc had no relapse, but about half of non-scc had distant metastases. All N2 patients divided 2 types as single-station N2 and multi-station N2. OS were 71.8%, 40.0% and DFS were 53.5%, 21.1% respectively. DFS was significantly different (p = 0.04). The advantage was remarkable in patients with scc-single-station N2 (OS was 88.9%, DFS was 77.8%). The effectiveness of postoperative radiotherapy is not showed, but our results suggest the possibility for existence of subgroup benefited from postoperative radiotherapy.

Abstract
We have searched for exclusive gammagamma production in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV, using 532 pb(-1) of integrated luminosity taken by the run II Collider Detector at Fermilab. The event signature requires two electromagnetic showers, each with transverse energy E(T)>5 GeV and pseudorapidity |eta|<1.0, with no other particles detected in the event. Three candidate events are observed. We discuss the consistency of the three events with gammagamma, pi(0)pi(0), or eta eta production. The probability that other processes fluctuate to >or=3 events is 1.7x10(-4). An upper limit on the cross section of pp-->p + gammagamma + p production is set at 410 fb with 95% confidence level.

Abstract
We report an observation of new bottom baryons produced in pp collisions at the Tevatron. Using 1.1 fb(-1) of data collected by the CDF II detector, we observe four Lambda b 0 pi+/- resonances in the fully reconstructed decay mode Lambda b 0-->Lambda c + pi-, where Lambda c+-->pK* pi+. We interpret these states as the Sigma b(*)+/- baryons and measure the following masses: m Sigma b+=5807.8 -2.2 +2.0(stat.)+/-1.7(syst.) MeV/c2, m Sigma b- =5815.2+/-1.0(stat.)+/-1.7(syst.) MeV/c2, and m(Sigma b*)-m(Sigma b)=21.2-1.9 +2.0(stat.)-0.3+0.4(syst.) MeV/c2.

Abstract
We present a search for associated production of the chargino and neutralino supersymmetric particles using up to 1.1 fb{-1} of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II experiment at the Tevatron pp collider at sq rt[s]=1.96 TeV. We analyze events with a large transverse momentum imbalance and either three charged leptons or two charged leptons of the same electric charge. The numbers of observed events are consistent with standard model expectations. Upper limits on the production cross section are derived in different theoretical models.

Precise measurement of the top-quark mass in the lepton+jets topology at CDF II. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2007; 99:182002. Abstract
We present a measurement of the mass of the top quark from proton-antiproton collisions recorded at the CDF experiment in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron. We analyze events from the single lepton plus jets final state (tt-->W(+)bW(-)b-->lnubqq'b). The top-quark mass is extracted using a direct calculation of the probability density that each event corresponds to the tt final state. The probability is a function of both the mass of the top quark and the energy scale of the calorimeter jets, which is constrained in situ by the hadronic W boson mass. Using 167 events observed in 955 pb(-1) of integrated luminosity, we achieve the single most precise measurement of the top-quark mass, 170.8+/-2.2(stat.)+/-1.4(syst.) GeV/c(2).

Search for new physics in high-mass electron-positron events in pp[over] collisions at square root s = 1.96 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2007; 99:171802. Abstract
We report the results of a search for a narrow resonance in electron-positron events in the invariant mass range of 150-950 GeV/c(2) using 1.3 fb(-1) of pp[over] collision data at square root s = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF II detector at Fermilab. No significant evidence of such a resonance is observed and we interpret the results to exclude the standard-model-like Z' with a mass below 923 GeV/c(2) and the Randall-Sundrum graviton with a mass below 807 GeV/c(2) for k/M[over](pl) = 0.1, both at the 95% confidence level. Combining with diphoton data excludes the Randall-Sundrum graviton for masses below 889 GeV/c(2) for k/M[over](pl) = 0.1.

Abstract
We have performed a search for new particles which decay to two photons using 1.2 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity from pp[over] collisions at square root s = 1.96 TeV collected using the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We find the diphoton mass spectrum to be in agreement with the standard model expectation, and set limits on the cross section times branching ratio for the Randall-Sundrum graviton, as a function of diphoton mass. We subsequently derive lower limits for the graviton mass of 230 GeV/c(2) and 850 GeV/c(2), at the 95% confidence level, for coupling parameters (k/M[over](Pl)) of 0.01 and 0.1, respectively.

Abstract
We present a measurement of the W-boson mass using 200 pb{-1} of data collected in pp[over ] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at run II of the Fermilab Tevatron. With a sample of 63 964 W-->enu candidates and 51 128 W-->munu candidates, we measure M_{W}=80 413+/-34{stat}+/-34{syst}=80,413+/-48 MeV/c;{2}. This is the most precise single measurement of the W-boson mass to date.

Abstract
The shortage of donor organs has been 1 of the major obstacles to solid organ transplantation. Typical lung donor criteria include clear lung field on chest radiograph, adequate oxygenation, acceptable lung compliance, and satisfactory bronchoscopic findings. To extend usage of available donors, liberalization of donor lung selection criteria has been facilitated, however, marginal donor lungs must be used with discretion, because donor lung injury, especially that related to infection, has a potential leading to early post-operative death of the recipient. From March 2000 to December 2006, we evaluated 15 braindead donors and at least 1 of the lungs from 9 donors was judged suitable for transplantation. One of 9 recipients developed severe pneumonia cased by carbapenems-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa possibly originating from the donor lungs, eventually leading to death. The chest radiograph and oxygenation of the donor had been satisfactory, however, a moderate amount of mucopurulent secretions was observed by bronchoscopic inspection and the donor had been given a cefozopran for 9 days before the procurement operation. Remaining 8 recipients were free from air-way infection in the early postoperative period. We discuss the status and problems of donor lung evaluation for transplantation with regard to donor lung infection.
