Correlation of polarity and crystal structure with optoelectronic and transport properties of GaN/AlN/GaN nanowire sensors

GaN nanowires (NWs) with an AlN insertion were studied by correlated optoelectronic and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) characterization on the same single NW. Using aberration-corrected annular bright field and high angle annular dark field STEM, we identify the NW growth axis to be the N-polar [000-1] direction. The electrical transport characteristics of the NWs are explained by the polarization-induced asymmetric potential profile and by the presence of an AlN/GaN shell around the GaN base of the wire. The AlN insertion blocks the electron flow through the GaN core, confining the current to the radial GaN outer shell, close to the NW sidewalls, which increases the sensitivity of the photocurrent to the environment and in particular to the presence of oxygen. The desorption of oxygen adatoms in vacuum leads to a reduction of the nonradiative surface trap density, increasing both dark current and photocurrent.

Influence of adsorption and anaerobic granular sludge characteristics on long chain fatty acids inhibition process

The impact of LCFA adsorption on the methanogenic activity was evaluated in batch assays for two anaerobic granular sludges in the presence and absence of bentonite as synthetic adsorbent. A clear inhibitory effect at an oleate (C18:1) concentration of 0.5 g(C18:1) L(-1) was observed for both sludges. Palmitate (C16:0) was confirmed to be the main intermediate of C18:1 degradation in not adapted sludge and its accumulation was further evidenced by fluorescence staining and microscopy techniques. LCFA inhibition could be decreased by the addition of bentonite, reducing the lag-phase and accelerating the kinetics of LCFA degradation, concluding in the importance of the adsorptive nature of the LCFA inhibitory process. Granule morphology and molecular profiling of predominant microorganisms revealed that biomass adaptation to LCFA could modify the intermediates accumulation profiles and process rates.

Pigeon circovirus infection: pathological observations and suggested pathogenesis

Pigeon circovirus infection (PiCV) was diagnosed by light and transmission electron microscopy in 15 birds from five lofts in western France. Histopathological findings were suggestive of primary bursotropism of pigeon circovirus, followed by secondary systemic spread from the bursa of Fabricius, particularly to non-bursal lymphoid organs. The last stage of the disease was associated with various secondary (particularly bacterial) infections. In situ detection of apoptosis in the bursa of Fabricius indicated that PiCV was concomitant with an increase in bursal lymphocytic apoptotic events related to viral infection and leading to severe acquired immunosuppression.

Realignment capability of the nCPMG sequence

The nCPMG sequence is based on a particular phase modulation of the refocusing pulse train, and was originally designed for rendering the spin echo amplitude insensitive to the initial magnetization phase. This pulse sequence has the peculiarity of being easily invertible, which enables perfect driven equilibrium experiments, in the absence of relaxation. This magnetization 'realignment' is effective for all three components. Hence the overall operation is transparent. Supporting theory is presented here, together with the first direct experimental proof of the claim. The experiment shows that, with the present stabilization sequence, perfect realignment is indeed made possible for a range of refocusing pulse nutation angles from 130° to 230°.

Anaerobic digestion of slaughterhouse waste: main process limitations and microbial community interactions

Fresh pig/cattle slaughterhouse waste mixtures, with different lipid-protein ratios, were characterized and their anaerobic biodegradability assessed in batch tests. The resultant methane potentials were high (270-300 L(CH4) kg(-1)(COD)) making them interesting substrates for the anaerobic digestion process. However, when increasing substrate concentrations in consecutive batch tests, up to 15 g(COD) kg(-1), a clear inhibitory process was monitored. Despite the reported severe inhibition, related to lipid content, the system was able to recover activity and successfully degrade the substrate. Furthermore, 16SrRNA gene-based DGGE results showed an enrichment of specialized microbial populations, such as β-oxidizing/proteolitic bacteria (Syntrophomonas sp., Coprothermobacter sp. and Anaerobaculum sp.), and syntrophic methanogens (Methanosarcina sp.). Consequently, the lipid concentration of substrate and the structure of the microbial community are the main limiting factors for a successful anaerobic treatment of fresh slaughterhouse waste.

Long-chain fatty acids inhibition and adaptation process in anaerobic thermophilic digestion: batch tests, microbial community structure and mathematical modelling

Biomass samples taken during the continuous operation of thermophilic anaerobic digestors fed with manure and exposed to successive inhibitory pulses of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) were characterized in terms of specific metabolic activities and 16S rDNA DGGE profiling of the microbial community structure. Improvement of hydrogenotrophic and acidogenic (beta-oxidation) activity rates was detected upon successive LCFA pulses, while different inhibition effects over specific anaerobic trophic groups were observed. Bioreactor recovery capacity and biomass adaptation to LCFA inhibition were verified. Population profiles of eubacterial and archaeal 16S rDNA genes revealed that no significant shift on microbial community composition took place upon biomass exposure to LCFA. DNA sequencing of predominant DGGE bands showed close phylogenetic affinity to ribotypes characteristic from specific beta-oxidation bacterial genera (Syntrophomonas and Clostridium), while a single predominant syntrophic archaeae was related with the genus Methanosarcina. The hypothesis that biomass adaptation was fundamentally of physiological nature was tested using mathematical modelling, taking the IWA ADM1 as general model. New kinetics considering the relation between LCFA inhibitory substrate concentration and specific biomass content, as an approximation to the adsorption process, improved the model fitting and provided a better insight on the physical nature of the LCFA inhibition process.

Breast Cancer Events Associated with Germline Mutations of the CDH1 Gene (Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer)

Breast cancer events associated with germline mutations of the CDH1 gene (Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer).Background: Mutations of the CDH1 (e-cadherin) gene are known to cause an autosomal dominant familial cancer syndrome, commonly referred to as hereditary diffuse gastric cancer. The lifetime risk of gastric cancer may be up to 80 percent. An associated risk of lobular breast cancer has been identified, but less well studied. Lifetime risk of breast cancer in affected women may be up to 50 percent.Method: We identified 17 women in our centre with known CDH1 mutations that have been offered genetic counseling for breast cancer risk. Counseling included discussion of prophylactic surgery, and breast screening via MRI/mammogram. We performed a chart review to identify breast cancer screening, prophylaxis, and treatment events in these patients.Results: 16 patients had adequate chart data to study. Of these, one patient had a breast cancer (T3N0M0) prior to mutation identification. 13 of 15 remaining patients entered into a high-risk breast-screening program with annual MRI and mammogram. Two breast cancers were identified in the first two years of patient screening; both were T1N0M0. Both women opted for bilateral mastectomy. No patient opted for prophylactic breast surgery prior to cancer detection, although several were in the process of prophylactic gastrectomy.Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first in-depth description of breast cancer events in patients with inherited CDH1 mutations. A majority of patients have opted for a breast-screening program, with successful early detection in two patients. Patients to date have not chosen primary prophylactic breast surgery, but two have chosen bilateral mastectomy upon detection of a malignancy. Further epidemiological studies are required to fully understand the breast cancer pattern and natural history that occurs in this genetic syndrome.

The impact of caesarean delivery and type of feeding on cow's milk allergy in infants and subsequent development of allergic march in childhood

BACKGROUND

The incidence of IgE-mediated cow's milk allergy (CMA) has increased over the last few years. There are several genetic and environmental risk factors that may be related to this allergy and the subsequent allergic march (AM).

METHODS

A prospective, cohort study was conducted in patients recruited into the study between 1998 and 2002. Information on clinical variables and complementary tests, perinatal and obstetric factors and the type of hydrolysed formula used was recorded. A cross sectional study on the prevalence of allergic diseases in this cohort was performed in 2004.

RESULTS

We compared IgE-mediated CMA patients with non-IgE-mediated CMA patients and found that IgE-mediated CMA is associated with caesarean delivery (OR = 2.14 95% CI: 1.02-4.49), duration of breast feeding (>2 months, OR = 4.14; 95% CI: 2.17-7.89) and the use of supplementary artificial formula whilst breast feeding (OR = 2.86; 95% CI: 1.33-6.13). The factors associated with AM in IgE-mediated CMA patients were caesarean delivery (OR = 0.42; 95% CI: 0.19-0.92) and the use of more extensively hydrolysed high grade hydrolysates (+EH/HGH) (OR = 0.44; 95% CI: 0.20-0.98), both as protective factors.

CONCLUSIONS

Caesarean delivery is demonstrated as being a risk factor for IgE-mediated CMA, but it does not increase the risk of AM in these infants. The use of +EH/HGH appears to protect IgE-mediated CMA patients from eventually developing AM.

Prophylactic total gastrectomy (PTG) for hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC): the Newfoundland experience with 23 patients

BACKGROUND

Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) results from truncating mutations of the CDH1 (E-cadherin) gene. It is an autosomal dominant cancer susceptibility syndrome with a lifetime risk of diffuse gastric cancer (DGC) of 60-80%, with a mean age of onset of 37 years. There exists no adequate screening test for DGC. Early intramucosal diffuse/signet-ring cell carcinomas have been found in prophylactic total gastrectomy (PTG) specimens following normal preoperative endoscopy. Total gastrectomy has been advocated on a prophylactic basis. The aim of this study was to report our experience with PTG in 23 patients from the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. This is the largest series worldwide.

METHODS

A retrospective study of consecutive patients undergoing PTG for HDGC was performed. All patients were confirmed to have a truncating mutation of the CDH1 gene.

RESULTS

Twenty-three patients underwent PTG between February 2006 and November 2008. Major complications were found in 4/23 patients (17%), with no mortality. Two of 23 patients (9%) had positive mucosal biopsies on preoperative EGD. Twenty-two of 23 patients (96%) had evidence of diffuse/signet-ring carcinoma on final standardized pathological evaluation. Therefore, 21/23 (91%) were not picked up by preoperative EGD screening.

CONCLUSIONS

PTG can be performed in patients with HDGC with a low rate of serious complications. Methods of reconstruction incorporating a pouch reservoir and preservation of the postgastric branches of the vagus nerves need to be explored. More refined penetrance estimates, effective screening protocols, and long-term psychological and functional outcomes following PTG require organized multicenter collaborative efforts.

Hydrolysis kinetics in anaerobic degradation of particulate organic material: an overview

The applicability of different kinetics to the hydrolysis of particulate organic material in anaerobic digestion is discussed. Hydrolysis has traditionally been modelled according to the first-order kinetics. For complex substrate, the first-order kinetics should be modified in order to take into account hardly degradable material. It has been shown that models in which hydrolysis is coupled to the growth of hydrolytic bacteria work well at high or at fluctuant organic loading. In particular, the surface-related two-phase and the Contois models showed good fits to experimental data from a wide range of organic waste. Both models tend to the first-order kinetics at a high biomass-to-waste ratio and, for this reason, they can be considered as more general models. Examples on different inhibition processes that might affect the degradation of solid waste are reported. Acetogenesis or methanogenesis might be the rate-limiting stages in complex waste. In such cases, stimulation of hydrolysis (mechanically, chemically or biologically) may lead to a further inhibition of these stages, which ultimately affects hydrolysis as well. Since the hydrolysis process is characterized by surface and transport phenomena, new developments in spatially distributed models are considered fundamental to provide new insights in this complex process.
