Abstract
This study reports on cervical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed in the fully flexed position in 13 male patients with Hirayama disease and 12 normal controls (males). The anterior–posterior diameter of the cervical cord at the superior margin of the C6 vertebral body was measured, as well as the angle between adjacent cervical bodies. Localized lower cervical-cord atrophy, cord flattening and abnormal signals in the posterior epidural space were studied. Patients demonstrated an increased angle between C5 and C6, and C6 cord lesions. There were significant differences between patients and controls in localized lower cervical-cord atrophy and cord flattening. Many patients were found to have a crescent-shaped high-intensity mass on T2WI MRI and a low-intensity mass on T1WI MRI in the posterior epidural space. In patients, there were specific imaging features of Hirayama disease on fully flexed MRI. Cervical MRI in the fully flexed position has significant value in the clinical diagnosis of Hirayama disease.

Abstract
Lake water eutrophication has become one of the most important factors impeding sustainable economic development in China. Knowledge of the current status of lake water eutrophication and determination of its mechanism are prerequisites to devising a sound solution to the problem. Based on reviewing the literature, this paper elaborates on the evolutional process and current state of shallow inland lake water eutrophication in China. The mechanism of lake water eutrophication is explored from nutrient sources. In light of the identified mechanism strategies are proposed to control and tackle lake water eutrophication. This review reveals that water eutrophication in most lakes was initiated in the 1980s when the national economy underwent rapid development. At present, the problem of water eutrophication is still serious, with frequent occurrence of damaging algal blooms, which have disrupted the normal supply of drinking water in shore cities. Each destructive bloom caused a direct economic loss valued at billions of yuan. Nonpoint pollution sources, namely, waste discharge from agricultural fields and nutrients released from floor deposits, are identified as the two major sources of nitrogen and phosphorus. Therefore, all control and rehabilitation measures of lake water eutrophication should target these nutrient sources. Biological measures are recommended to rehabilitate eutrophied lake waters and restore the lake ecosystem in order to bring the problem under control.

Abstract
An improved method for preparing activated carbons from wet waste activated sludge (WAS) by direct chemical activation was studied in this paper. The effects of processing parameters on iodine adsorption capacity of the product were investigated. Results show that sludge-based activated carbon prepared with KOH had a larger iodine value than those activated with ZnCl(2) and KCl. The maximum iodine value was observed at the KOH concentration of 0.50 M. Increasing the impregnation time from 10 to 20 h resulted in a 20% increase in the iodine value. The highest iodine value was obtained at the activation temperature of 600 degrees C and holding time of 1 h. Sludge water content had insignificant effects on the iodine value of products. Raw WAS with a water content of 93.2% can be converted into an activated carbon with a high specific surface area of 737.6 m(2) g(-1) and iodine value of 864.8 mgg(-1) under optimum experimental conditions. Other physical properties such as total pore volume, micropore volume and mean pore diameter of the product were also reported and compared with those of commercial activated carbon.

Abstract
The heterodimeric transporter associated with antigen processing (TAP) complex plays a key role in immune surveillance. TAP1 and TAP2 typing was usually performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism and PCR-sequence-specific oligonucleotide probe. As an alternative to these methods, we have established TaqMan assays to determine the frequencies of the TAP1 and TAP2 alleles. We have used these new TaqMan assays to genotype the polymorphisms in 339 unrelated Chinese Hans residing in North and South China. We detected five TAP1 and four TAP2 alleles. All the loci conform to the Hardy-Weinberg expectations. The most frequent alleles in Chinese Hans were TAP1*0101 (79.79%) and TAP2*0101 (82.74%). The two-locus haplotype analysis showed highly significant positive linkage disequilibrium for one TAP1-TAP2 haplotype (TAP1*020101-TAP2*0102), three TAP1-DRB1 haplotypes (TAP1*020101-DRB1*03, TAP1*020102-DRB1*13, and TAP1*0301-DRB1*16), and three TAP2-DRB1 haplotypes (TAP2*0102-DRB1*09, TAP2*0103-DRB1*04, and TAP2*0201-DRB1*01). The three-locus haplotype analysis showed highly significant positive linkage disequilibrium for TAP1*0101-TAP2*0101-DRB1*07, TAP1*0101-TAP2*0103-DRB1*04, TAP1*020101-TAP2*0101-DRB1*03, and TAP1*020101-TAP2*0102-DRB1*13. Comparison of the allele frequencies with those of other populations showed that the TAP1 allele distribution was very similar in all the groups, except for the Guarani, Kaingang, and Anatolian populations, but TAP2 distribution was significantly different from that of the other populations. The new TaqMan method provides relatively accurate, high-resolution, simple, and fast assays for TAP genotyping.

Abstract
Neuroendocrine-specific protein (NSP) reticulons (RTN) are endoplasmic reticulum-associated protein complexes, which are localized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and identified as markers for neuroendocrine differentiation. At least 4 different RTN genes have been identified in mammals, but in most cases, the functions of the encoded proteins except mammalian RTN4-A and RTN4-B are still elusive. In the present study, the expression of human reticulon 3 (hRTN3) in a variety of tissues was investigated. Northern blotting hybridization revealed higher expression of hRTN3 in normal brain and some endocrine-related organs such as thyroid relative to other non-endocrine organs. Twelve surgical specimens meeting the histological criteria for astrocytoma grade II, III and IV were investigated by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical analysis, which demonstrated the overexpression of hRTN3 in astrocytoma tumor cells, while in non-cancerous brain tissues hRTN3 was mainly expressed in neurons and almost no signals in glia cells could be detected. The differential expression of hRTN3 between astrocytoma and non-cancerous tissue may provide insight into the progress of astrocytoma.

Abstract
This paper introduces an ECG computing algorithm that computes ECG based on the action potential of single cardiac cell. Taking solid angle analysis as tool, this algorithm analyzes the field potential of a cardiac cell that connects and communicates with neighboring cells. This algorithm has been implemented in our electrophysiological model CardioAuto, which was built with extended Cellular 3.0-a cellular automata system. Algorithm and simulation results reveal that it is the transmembrane potential slope among cell group that contributes to ECG waveform generation and determines the waveform deflection. To a specific lead location, whenever cell group has a transmembrane potential slope that proximal end is higher than distal end, a downward ECG deflection is generated. Whenever cell group has a reverse transmembrane potential slope, an upward ECG deflection is generated. Whenever there is no transmembrane potential slope, ECG keeps on baseline. According to our algorithm, the significance of normal and many abnormal ECG waveforms can be analyzed and interpreted at cellular level.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the variability of lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP) in patients with chronic hepatitis and severe hepatitis. METHODS Using ELISA the authors detected the serum LBP of 71 patients including 16 with chronic hepatitis, 15 with post hepatitis cirrhosis, 12 with severe hepatitis and 17 healthy controls. RESULTS The serum LBP of chronic liver disease group was 35 166.25 micrograms/L, which was higher than that of healthy control group (18 590.00 micrograms/L). The serum LBP of chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis patients was higher than that of severe hepatitis cases. These differences were significant. The serum LBP had positive correlation with prothrombin activity (PTA) (r =0.395 8,P <0.01), while it had no significant correlation with serum ALT and total bilirubin levels (r =0.164 5,0.189 4, respectively, P <0.05). CONCLUSIONS Serum LBP could be used as an index for predicting liver function compensation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of distraction osteogenesis in correction of mandibular micrognathia accompanying obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). METHODS A total of 15 patients, aged 9 to 43 years, 11 males and 4 females, were treated. 7 patients suffered from bilateral ankylosis of temporo manclibular joint inducing severe mandibular micrognathia and accompanying severe OSAS. 3 cases suffered from unilateral TMJ ankylosis with OSAS. 3 patients suffered from congenital developmental micrognathia with OSAS. 2 cases were caused by trauma. Among the 15 patients, 12 were treated by synchronous bilateral mandibular distraction, 3 patients were distracted unilaterally. Every patient had been evaluated pre- and postoperatively with cephalometry and polysomnography. RESULTS The minimum distance of distraction was 9 mm, the maximum was 30 mm, with a mean of 20.4 mm, in mandible of 15 patients with 27 sides. The distraction process was smooth in all the cases. The osteogenesis was good, without infection and other complications. Complete curative effect was achieved in 4 severe, 3 moderate, and 4 mild cases. The posterior airway space was increased from averaged 4.5 mm preoperatively to 12.4 mm. The increase of SNB angle was from preoperative 66 degrees to 75 degrees on average postoperatively. The vast majority of the patients had their subjective symptoms alleviated gradually or disappeared completely. The results were stable without relapse during a follow-up period of 12 months. CONCLUSION The distraction osteogenesis can not only be used to effectively correct severe mandibular micrognathia deformity, but also can cure its accompanying OSAS. The procedure is simple, with low risk, high curative rate, low relapse rate, and stable result. Up to now, it is the most effective method in the treatment of this difficult and complicated kind of disorder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Controversy exists regarding the perfusion status of chronically dysfunctional yet viable myocardium. Studies investigating the pathophysiology of this condition have reached different conclusions, with some suggesting that myocardial blood flow (MBF) in these regions is normal at rest with regional dysfunction resulting from repetitive stress-induced ischemia (stunned myocardium), whereas others have proposed that MBF is chronically reduced at rest (hibernating myocardium). However, adequately powered experimental studies investigating this question in an appropriate animal model using clinically available techniques have not been performed. Based on the mixed results of prior studies, we hypothesized that these chronically dysfunctional yet viable regions may actually represent a mixture of hibernation and stunning. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to quantitatively determine the distribution of MBF in left ventricular regions with chronically impaired resting function but preserved viability in a large population of animals with single-vessel coronary stenosis in an attempt to further elucidate the mechanism(s) responsible for chronic, reversible myocardial dysfunction. METHODS Fifty-two adult mini-swine with 90% proximal left circumflex (LCx) stenosis underwent dynamic positron emission tomography (PET) with 13N-ammonia and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose and dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) (5 to 40 microg/kg/min) 1 month after stenosis creation. Values of MBF and FDG uptake by PET and wall motion score index (WMSI) by DSE were compared using a standard 16-segment model. RESULTS Of 312 possible LCx segments seen on PET, 303 (97.1%) were visualized by DSE. Of the 303 LCx segments, 279 (92.1%) had rest dysfunction (WMSI > or = 2) by DSE. One hundred eighty-two segments (60.1%) had decreased (< 85% reference) MBF at rest with preserved to increased (> 60% reference) FDG uptake and were classified as hibernating. Ninety-two segments (30.4%) had preserved MBF (> or = 85% reference) and were classified as stunned. Five segments (1.7%) with reduced (< or = 60% reference) FDG uptake by PET and akinesis or dyskinesis at rest (WMSI > or = 3) and no contractile reserve were considered infarcted. Hibernating segments had significantly higher FDG uptake at rest (360.7+/-48.3 vs 212.3+/-17.7% septal values; p < 0.001) than stunned segments consistent with greater resting ischemia. Likewise, mean rest WMSI was also worse in hibernating versus stunned segments (2.35+/-0.04 vs 2.13+/-0.04; p < 0.001). There was no difference in the percentage of hibernating versus stunned segments exhibiting contractile reserve during dobutamine infusion (55.5 vs 63.7%; p = 0.4), indicating similar degrees of viability. CONCLUSIONS Myocardial hibernation and stunning appear to frequently coexist in regions served by a stenotic coronary vessel. Hibernating regions appear to have greater resting ischemia based on higher values of FDG uptake and greater resting dysfunction. Reversible left ventricular dysfunction in the setting of chronic coronary artery disease is likely due to a combination of these two mechanisms.

We report here the identification of the human homologue of Drosophila ash2 and its alternative splicing isoform, ASH2L1 and ASH2L2. ASH2L proteins are 60% homologous to Drosophila ash2. ASH2L also has a zinc finger motif (C2C2) although it is not identical to that in ASH2. Expression profile analysis showed that the amount of ASH2L transcripts is extremely high in fetal liver, testis, and leukemia cell lines with erythroid and megakaryocytic potential such as K562, Hel, and Dami. We treated these cells with differentiation inducers phorbol ester and hemin. We found that ASH2L is downregulated rapidly and dramatically in K562, Hel, and Dami cells during phorbol ester induced differentiation with megakaryocytic features. However, its expression is maintained at a high level during erythroid differentiation of K562 cells induced with hemin. These results suggest that ASH2L plays a role in hematopoiesis and is associated with some special kinds of leukemia.

Abstract
A strategy to measure bacterial functional redundancy was developed and tested with soils collected along a soil reclamation gradient by determining the richness and diversity of bacterial groups capable of in situ growth on selected carbon substrates. Soil cores were collected from four sites along a transect from the Jamari tin mine site in the Jamari National Forest, Rondonia, RO, Brazil: denuded mine spoil, soil from below the canopy of invading pioneer trees, revegetated soil under new growth on the forest edge, and the forest floor of an adjacent preserved forest. Bacterial population responses were analyzed by amending these soil samples with individual carbon substrates in the presence of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU). BrdU-labeled DNA was then subjected to a 16S-23S rRNA intergenic analysis to depict the actively growing bacteria from each site. The number and diversity of bacterial groups responding to four carbon substrates (L-serine, L-threonine, sodium citrate, and alpha-lactose hydrate) increased along the reclamation-vegetation gradient such that the preserved forest soil samples contained the highest functional redundancy for each substrate. These data suggest that bacterial functional redundancy increases in relation to the regrowth of plant communities and may therefore represent an important aspect of the restoration of soil biological functionality to reclaimed mine spoils. They also suggest that bacterial functional redundancy may be a useful indicator of soil quality and ecosystem functioning.
