Abstract
Humans and baboons (Papio spp.) share considerable anatomical and physiological similarities in their reproductive tracts. Given the similarities, it is reasonable to expect that the normal vaginal microbial composition (microbiota) of baboons would be similar to that of humans. We have used a 16S rRNA phylogenetic approach to assess the composition of the baboon vaginal microbiota in a set of nine animals from a captive facility and six from the wild. Results show that although Gram-positive bacteria dominate in baboons as they do in humans, there are major differences between the vaginal microbiota of baboons and that of humans. In contrast to humans, the species of Gram-positive bacteria (Firmicutes) were taxa other than Lactobacillus species. In addition, some groups of Gram-negative bacteria that are not normally abundant in humans were found in the baboon samples. A further level of difference was also seen even within the same bacterial phylogenetic group, as baboon strains tended to be more phylogenetically distinct from human strains than human strains were with each other. Finally, results of our analysis suggests that co-evolution of microbes and their hosts cannot account for the major differences between the microbiota of baboons and that of humans because divergences between the major bacterial genera were too ancient to have occurred since primates evolved. Instead, the primate vaginal tracts appear to have acquired discrete subsets of bacteria from the vast diversity of bacteria available in the environment and established a community responsive to and compatible with host species physiology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gardnerella vaginalis is described as a common vaginal bacterial species whose presence correlates strongly with bacterial vaginosis (BV). Here we report the genome sequencing and comparative analyses of three strains of G. vaginalis. Strains 317 (ATCC 14019) and 594 (ATCC 14018) were isolated from the vaginal tracts of women with symptomatic BV, while Strain 409-05 was isolated from a healthy, asymptomatic individual with a Nugent score of 9. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Substantial genomic rearrangement and heterogeneity were observed that appeared to have resulted from both mobile elements and substantial lateral gene transfer. These genomic differences translated to differences in metabolic potential. All strains are equipped with significant virulence potential, including genes encoding the previously described vaginolysin, pili for cytoadhesion, EPS biosynthetic genes for biofilm formation, and antimicrobial resistance systems, We also observed systems promoting multi-drug and lantibiotic extrusion. All G. vaginalis strains possess a large number of genes that may enhance their ability to compete with and exclude other vaginal colonists. These include up to six toxin-antitoxin systems and up to nine additional antitoxins lacking cognate toxins, several of which are clustered within each genome. All strains encode bacteriocidal toxins, including two lysozyme-like toxins produced uniquely by strain 409-05. Interestingly, the BV isolates encode numerous proteins not found in strain 409-05 that likely increase their pathogenic potential. These include enzymes enabling mucin degradation, a trait previously described to strongly correlate with BV, although commonly attributed to non-G. vaginalis species. CONCLUSIONS Collectively, our results indicate that all three strains are able to thrive in vaginal environments, and therein the BV isolates are capable of occupying a niche that is unique from 409-05. Each strain has significant virulence potential, although genomic and metabolic differences, such as the ability to degrade mucin, indicate that the detection of G. vaginalis in the vaginal tract provides only partial information on the physiological potential of the organism.

Abstract
Magnetic field detection with extremely high spatial resolution is crucial to applications in magnetic storage, biosensing, and magnetic imaging. Here, we present the concept of using a spin torque oscillator (STO) to detect magnetic fields by measuring the frequency of the oscillator. This sensor's performance relies predominantly on STO properties such as spectral linewidth and frequency dispersion with magnetic field, rather than signal amplitude as in conventional magnetoresistive sensors, and is shown in measured devices to achieve large signal to noise ratios. Using macrospin simulations, we describe oscillator designs for maximizing performance, making spin torque oscillators an attractive candidate to replace more commonly used sensors in nanoscale magnetic field sensing and future magnetic recording applications.

Abstract
The light chain of botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT/A-LC) is a zinc-metalloprotease that requires two extended exosites for optimal substrate binding and recognition of its intracellular target SNAP25. CFP and YFP connected through SNAP25 peptide (141-206) containing both exosites (CsY) has been used in a FRET-based assay for BoNT/A. To further improve the FRET efficiency in this BoNT/A substrate for in vitro high-throughput assays, we explored the feasibility of enhancing the capture of CFP emission by doubling the number of YFP acceptors. In comparison to CsY, the tandem fluorescence substrates CsYY and YsCsY enhanced the ratiometric fluorescence signal between YFP and CFP. YsCsY, containing two substrate sites, offered the greatest fluorometric change upon toxin-catalyzed cleavage. In addition to known approaches for enhancing fluorescence yield through various mutations, this alternative tandem substrate approach can boost the FRET signal and is particularly useful for substrates requiring extensive exosite recognition for specificity.

Abstract
Background Using human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMECs) as an in vitro model for how African trypanosomes cross the human blood-brain barrier (BBB) we recently reported that the parasites cross the BBB by generating calcium activation signals in HBMECs through the activity of parasite cysteine proteases, particularly cathepsin L (brucipain). In the current study, we examined the possible role of a class of protease stimulated HBMEC G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) known as protease activated receptors (PARs) that might be implicated in calcium signaling by African trypanosomes. Methodology/Principal Findings Using RNA interference (RNAi) we found that in vitro PAR-2 gene (F2RL1) expression in HBMEC monolayers could be reduced by over 95%. We also found that the ability of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense to cross F2RL1-silenced HBMEC monolayers was reduced (39%–49%) and that HBMECs silenced for F2RL1 maintained control levels of barrier function in the presence of the parasite. Consistent with the role of PAR-2, we found that HBMEC barrier function was also maintained after blockade of Gαq with Pasteurella multocida toxin (PMT). PAR-2 signaling has been shown in other systems to have neuroinflammatory and neuroprotective roles and our data implicate a role for proteases (i.e. brucipain) and PAR-2 in African trypanosome/HBMEC interactions. Using gene-profiling methods to interrogate candidate HBMEC pathways specifically triggered by brucipain, several pathways that potentially link some pathophysiologic processes associated with CNS HAT were identified. Conclusions/Significance Together, the data support a role, in part, for GPCRs as molecular targets for parasite proteases that lead to the activation of Gαq-mediated calcium signaling. The consequence of these events is predicted to be increased permeability of the BBB to parasite transmigration and the initiation of neuroinflammation, events precursory to CNS disease. Human African trypanosomiasis, or sleeping sickness, occurs when single-cell trypanosome protozoan parasites spread from the blood to brain over the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This barrier is composed of brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs) especially designed to keep pathogens out. Safe drugs for treating sleeping sickness are lacking and alternative treatments are urgently required. Using our human BMEC BBB model, we previously found that a parasite protease, brucipain, induced calcium activation signals that allowed this barrier to open up to parasite crossing. Because human BMECs express protease-activated receptors (PARs) that trigger calcium signals in BMECs, we hypothesized a functional link between parasite brucipain and BMEC PARs. Utilizing RNA interference to block the production of one type of PAR called PAR-2, we hindered the ability of trypanosomes to both open up and cross human BMECs. Using gene-profiling methods to interrogate candidate BMEC pathways specifically triggered by brucipain, several pathways that potentially link brain inflammatory processes were identified, a finding congruent with the known role of PAR-2 as a mediator of inflammation. Overall, our data support a role for brucipain and BMEC PARs in trypanosome BBB transmigration, and as potential triggers for brain inflammation associated with the disease.

Abstract
This study presents 5-year follow-up data on NG, a woman with adult onset myotonic dystrophy and progressive cognitive decline who was first described by Wilson et al. The extent of the cognitive impairment is atypical of symptom-onset in adulthood and of paternal inheritance, both of which apply to this case. Together, the present and earlier studies report the results of regular neuropsychological assessments over a 16-year period. Severe impairment in executive functioning, episodic and semantic memory were apparent early in the history, while visuospatial skills and working memory were only mildly impaired after 16 years of follow-up. There was also a progressive dyslexia, initially characterized by the regularization errors typical of surface dyslexia, but subsequently dominated by visual/phonological reading errors. This pattern of impairment is not typical of myotonic dystrophy but resembles semantic dementia. Whilst the deficits may be attributable wholly to myotonic dystrophy pathology, the co-existence of a form of semantic dementia is also possible. It is noted that the aggregation of tau protein is a neuropathological feature common to both diseases.

Abstract
Biosecurity is emerging as a major global health priority for which innovative and unprecedented solutions are needed. Biosecurity is a challenging biocomplexity problem involving multifaceted processes such as interactions between humans and nonhuman biota, anthropogenic environmental and ecological factors, and socioeconomic and political pressures. Key to an effective biosecurity strategy will be fundamental understanding of evolutionary, anthropogenic and environmental driving forces at play in transmission and perpetuation of infectious diseases. Biosecurity solutions will depend on increased support of basic biomedical research and public education, enhanced healthcare preparedness, alternative strategies for ensuringsafety, and improved interagency cooperation regarding global health policy. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of paging systems in compensating for everyday memory and planning problems after brain injury, including in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS Here, in addition to further analyses of the TBI data from a previous randomised control crossover trial, results are reported from a sub-group of 36 participants with brain injury from cerebrovascular accident (CVA). RESULTS Results indicate that, as with the TBI group, the pager was effective. However, the pattern of results following cessation of treatment differed. At a group level, TBI participants demonstrated maintenance of pager-related benefits, whereas CVA participants' performance returned to baseline levels. Comparisons of demographic and neuropsychological characteristics of the groups showed that the CVA group was older, had a shorter interval post-injury, and had poorer executive function than the TBI group. Furthermore, within the TBI group, maintenance was associated with executive functioning, such that executive dysfunction impeded maintenance. This correlation remained after controlling for demographic differences between groups. CONCLUSIONS Together, these findings suggest that executive dysfunction may affect treatment-for example, whether or not temporary use of the pager is sufficient to establish a subsequently self-sustaining routine.

Abstract
Bacterial protein toxins are powerful tools for elucidating signaling mechanisms in eukaryotic cells. A number of bacterial protein toxins, e.g. cholera toxin, pertussis toxin (PTx), or Pasteurella multocida toxin (PMT), target heterotrimeric G proteins and have been used to stimulate or block specific signaling pathways or to demonstrate the contribution of their target proteins in cellular effects. PMT is a major virulence factor of P. multocida causing pasteurellosis in man and animals and is responsible for atrophic rhinitis in pigs. PMT modulates various signaling pathways, including phospholipase Cbeta and RhoA, by acting on the heterotrimeric G proteins Galpha(q) and Galpha(12/13), respectively. Here we report that PMT is a powerful activator of G(i) protein. We show that PMT decreases basal isoproterenol and forskolin-stimulated cAMP accumulation in intact Swiss 3T3 cells, inhibits adenylyl cyclase activity in cell membrane preparations, and enhances the inhibition of cAMP accumulation caused by lysophosphatidic acid via endothelial differentiation gene receptors. PMT-mediated inhibition of cAMP production is independent of toxin activation of Galpha(q) and/or Galpha(12/13). Although the effects of PMT are not inhibited by PTx, PMT blocks PTx-catalyzed ADP-ribosylation of G(i). PMT also inhibits steady-state GTPase activity and GTP binding of G(i) in Swiss 3T3 cell membranes stimulated by lysophosphatidic acid. The data indicate that PMT is a novel activator of G(i), modulating its GTPase activity and converting it into a PTx-insensitive state.

Abstract
PRIMARY PURPOSE There is a need to develop reliable outcome measures to determine well-being after brain injury. In 1997, Teasdale et al. published the European Brain Injury Questionnaire (EBIQ), a self-report and relative-report measure of the subjective experience of cognitive, emotional and social difficulties experienced by people with brain injury. It is now used in several rehabilitation centres as an outcome measure, but its test-re-test reliability has yet not been determined. The primary purpose of the present study is to establish this degree of reliability. RESEARCH DESIGN The EBIQ was administered twice within an approximately 1-month period to 50 people with brain injury, to 20 relatives of people with brain injury and to 51 normal controls. RESULTS The results showed significant and satisfactory test-re-test reliabilities for all three groups across all nine EBIQ scales (r = 0.55-0.90). CONCLUSION It is concluded that the EBIQ is a clinically reliable measure to determine the subjective well-being of people with brain injury and to assess change of subjective concerns over time.

Abstract
rRNA-based studies, which have become the most common method for assessing microbial communities, rely upon faithful amplification of the corresponding genes from the original DNA sample. We report here an analysis and reevaluation of commonly used primers for amplifying the DNA between positions 27 and 1492 of bacterial 16S rRNA genes (numbered according to the Escherichia coli rRNA). We propose a formulation for a forward primer (27f) that includes three sequences not usually present. We compare our proposed formulation to two common alternatives by using linear amplification-providing an assessment that is independent of a reverse primer-and in combination with the 1492 reverse primer (1492r) under the PCR conditions appropriate for making community rRNA gene clone libraries. For analyses of DNA from human vaginal samples, our formulation was better at maintaining the original rRNA gene ratio of Lactobacillus spp. to Gardnerella spp., particularly under stringent amplification conditions. Because our 27f formulation remains relatively simple, having seven distinct primer sequences, there is minimal loss of overall amplification efficiency and specificity.

Abstract
Many growth regulatory stimuli promote cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) Ser(133) phosphorylation, but the physiologically relevant CREB-Ser(133) kinase(s) in the heart remains uncertain. This study identifies a novel role for protein kinase D (PKD) as an in vivo cardiac CREB-Ser(133) kinase. We show that thrombin activates a PKCdelta-PKD pathway leading to CREB-Ser(133) phosphorylation in cardiomyocytes and cardiac fibroblasts. alpha(1)-Adrenergic receptors also activate a PKCdelta-PKD-CREB-Ser(133) phosphorylation pathway in cardiomyocytes. Of note, while the epidermal growth factor (EGF) promotes CREB-Ser(133) phosphorylation via an ERK-RSK pathway in cardiac fibroblasts, the thrombin-dependent EGFR transactivation pathway leading to ERK-RSK activation does not lead to CREB-Ser(133) phosphorylation in this cell type. Adenoviral-mediated overexpression of PKCdelta (but not PKCepsilon or PKCalpha) activates PKD; PKCdelta and PKD1-S744E/S748E overexpression both promote CREB-Ser(133) phosphorylation. Pasteuralla multocida toxin (PMT), a direct Galpha(q) agonist that induces robust cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, also activates the PKD-CREB-Ser(133) phosphorylation pathway, leading to the accumulation of active PKD and Ser(133)-phosphorylated CREB in the nucleus, activation of a CRE-responsive promoter, and increased Bcl-2 (CREB target gene) expression in cardiomyocyte cultures. Cardiac-specific Galpha(q) overexpression also leads to an increase in PKD-Ser(744)/Ser(748) and CREB-Ser(133) phosphorylation as well as increased Bcl-2 protein expression in the hearts of transgenic mice. Collectively, these studies identify a novel Galpha(q)-PKCdelta-PKD-CREB-Ser(133) phosphorylation pathway that is predicted to contribute to cardiac remodeling and could be targeted for therapeutic advantage in the setting of heart failure phenotypes.

Abstract
The large 1285-amino-acid protein toxin from Pasteurella multocida (PMT) is a multifunctional single-chain polypeptide that binds to and enters eukaryotic cells and acts intracellularly to promote G(q) and G(12/13) protein-dependent calcium and mitogenic signal transduction. Previous studies indicated that the intracellular activity domain responsible for PMT action was located within the C-terminal 600-700 amino acids. In this study, we have exogenously expressed a series of N- and C-terminal PMT fragments directly in mammalian cells and have used the dual luciferase reporter system to assay for toxin-mediated activation of calcium-calcineurin-NFAT signaling (NFAT-luciferase) and mitogenic serum response signaling (SRE-luciferase). Using this approach, we have defined the last 180 amino acids, which encompass the C3 domain in the crystal structure, as the minimum domain sufficient to activate both NFAT and SRE signaling pathways.

Abstract
Pasteurella multocida toxin (PMT) stimulates and subsequently uncouples phospholipase C beta1 (PLCbeta1) signal transduction through its selective action on the alpha subunit of the Gq-protein. Here, we describe the application of an NFAT-beta-lactamase reporter assay as a functional readout for PMT-induced activation of the Gq-protein-coupled PLCbeta1-IP(3)-Ca(2+) signaling pathway. Use of the NFAT-beta-lactamase reporter assay with a cell-permeable fluorogenic substrate provides high sensitivity due to the absence of endogenous beta-lactamase activity in mammalian cells. This assay system was optimized for cell density, dose and time exposure of PMT stimulation. It is suited for quantitative characterization of PMT activity in mammalian cells and for use as a high-throughput screening method for PMT deletion and point mutants suitable for vaccine development. This method has application's for diagnostic screening of clinical isolates of toxinogenic P. multocida.

Abstract
Memory and executive problems following encephalitis are common yet there are few published papers on the successful rehabilitation of such patients. We recently demonstrated (Wilson, Emslie, Quirk, & Evans, 2001; Wilson, Emslie, Quirk, Evans, & Watson, 2005) that a paging system could reduce the everyday memory and planning problems for people with non-progressive brain injury. Among the 143 patients who participated in the 2001 study were four people who had survived encephalitis. Their results are reported here. During a 2-week baseline, the successful task achievement of our four clients ranged from 2-81%. They then received a pager for 7 weeks and task achievement was documented in weeks 6 and 7. All were significantly more successful with the pager than they had been at baseline with success rates ranging from 45-96%. Five weeks after returning their pagers they were monitored once more. One of the encephalitic patients failed to achieve any of his target tasks, returning to baseline level, the other three dropped back a little but were still significantly more successful than at baseline. It is concluded that the paging system can reduce everyday memory and planning problems of patients with encephalitis.

Abstract
Pasteurella multocida toxin (PMT) is a potent mitogen and a specific activator of Gq-dependent signalling pathways. PMT impairs osteoblast differentiation and causes bone loss and fat reduction in vivo. We examined the effect of PMT on cell signalling pathways involved in 3T3-L1 adipocyte differentiation. We demonstrate that PMT treatment before or together with differentiation induction factors inhibits adipogenesis and prevents upregulation of important adipocyte markers - peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) and CAATT enhancer-binding protein alpha (C/EBPalpha). Moreover, PMT completely downregulates PPARgamma and C/EBPalpha expression in mature adipocytes. Differentiation of pre-adipocytes into adipocytes requires the suppression of pre-adipocyte factor 1 (Pref1) and Wnt signalling, along with the degradation of beta-catenin. PMT prevents downregulation of Pref1 and beta-catenin under differentiation-inducing conditions. In addition, PMT treatment downregulates expression of Notch1, a protein responsible for cell fate decision and implicated in regulation of adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 cells. PMT action on adipogenesis was not reversed by cyclosporin A, an inhibitor of Galphaq-PLC-calcium-dependent calcineurin activation. Our results reveal new pathways involved in PMT action on cellular physiology and differentiation. Our study further demonstrates that the effect of PMT on Pref1/PPARgamma/C/EBPalpha expression and adipogenesis does not occur just through activation of the Galphaq-calcium-calcineurin pathway, but involves Wnt/beta-catenin and Notch1 signalling pathways, two signalling pathways strongly linked to cancer predisposition, neurological and immunological dysfunctions, and fat and bone development.

Abstract
Thrombin activates protease-activated receptor-1 (PAR-1) and engages signaling pathways that influence the growth and survival of cardiomyocytes as well as extracellular matrix remodeling by cardiac fibroblasts. This study examines the role of Shc proteins in PAR-1-dependent signaling pathways that influence ventricular remodeling. We show that thrombin increases p46Shc/p52Shc phosphorylation at Tyr(239)/Tyr(240) and Tyr(317) (and p66Shc-Ser(36) phosphorylation) via a pertussis toxin-insensitive epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) transactivation pathway in cardiac fibroblasts; p66Shc-Ser(36) phosphorylation is via a MEK-dependent mechanism. In contrast, cardiac fibroblasts express beta(2)-adrenergic receptors that activate ERK through a pertussis toxin-sensitive EGFR transactivation pathway that does not involve Shc isoforms or lead to p66Shc-Ser(36) phosphorylation. In cardiomyocytes, thrombin triggers MEK-dependent p66Shc-Ser(36) phosphorylation, but this is not via EGFR transactivation (or associated with Shc-Tyr(239)/Tyr(240) and/or Tyr(317) phosphorylation). Importantly, p66Shc protein expression is detected in neonatal, but not adult, cardiomyocytes; p66Shc expression is induced (via a mechanism that requires protein kinase C and MEK activity) by Pasteurella multocida toxin, a Galpha(q) agonist that promotes cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. These results identify novel regulation of individual Shc isoforms in receptor-dependent pathways leading to cardiac hypertrophy and the transition to heart failure. The observations that p66Shc expression is induced by a Galpha(q) agonist and that PAR-1 activation leads to p66Shc-Ser(36) phosphorylation identifies p66Shc as a novel candidate hypertrophy-induced mediator of cardiomyocyte apoptosis and heart failure.

Abstract
Few studies of awareness in dementia have taken a longitudinal perspective, yet exploring the ways in which awareness changes over time may offer important information about the processes involved and the relationship between awareness and other variables. The present study explored in detail the patterns of change in awareness scores over time for a group of 12 participants with early-stage Alzheimer's disease using a multi-dimensional measure giving comparable participant-carer and post diction-performance discrepancy scores. There were small, non-significant increases in mean discrepancy scores for each of these components of the assessment, with similar patterns for questionnaire-based and performance-based ratings. The small changes that were observed reflected both participant and informant factors. The majority of participants showed only very minor changes; others showed changes in the direction of either reduced or increased awareness. There was no significant association between change in mean discrepancy score and change in MMSE score over time, although there was a significant decline in MMSE scores at follow-up. The observation of different longitudinal trajectories for awareness scores, reflecting increased or decreased awareness or no change, may indicate the operation of different processes affecting the expression of explicit awareness that can be understood within a biopsychosocial formulation of this complex construct.

Abstract
Clostridium botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) are the most toxic proteins for humans. The current clostridial-derived vaccines against BoNT intoxication have limitations including production and accessibility. Conditions were established to express the soluble receptor binding domain (heavy-chain receptor [HCR]) of BoNT serotypes A and E in Escherichia coli. Sera isolated from mice and rabbits immunized with recombinant HCR/A1 (rHCR/A1) from the classical type A-Hall strain (ATCC 3502) (BoNT/A1) and rHCR/E from BoNT serotype E Beluga (BoNT/E(B)) neutralized the homologous serotype of BoNT but displayed differences in cross-recognition and cross-protection. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blotting showed that alpha-rHCR/A1 recognized epitopes within the C terminus of the HCR/A and HCR/E, while alpha-rHCR/E recognized epitopes within the N terminus or interface between the N and C termini of the HCR proteins. alpha-rHCR/E(B) sera possessed detectable neutralizing capacity for BoNT/A1, while alpha-rHCR/A1 did not neutralize BoNT/E. rHCR/A was an effective immunogen against BoNT/A1 and the Kyoto F infant strain (BoNT/A2), but not BoNT serotype E Alaska (BoNT/E(A)), while rHCR/E(B) neutralized BoNT/E(A), and under hyperimmunization conditions protected against BoNT/A1 and BoNT/A2. The protection elicited by rHCR/A1 to BoNT/A1 and BoNT/A2 and by rHCR/E(B) to BoNT/E(A) indicate that immunization with receptor binding domains elicit protection within sub-serotypes of BoNT. The protection elicited by hyperimmunization with rHCR/E against BoNT/A suggests the presence of common neutralizing epitopes between the serotypes E and A. These results show that a receptor binding domain subunit vaccine protects against serotype variants of BoNTs.

Abstract
The New Holland mouse (Pseudomys novaehollandiae) was first recorded at Wilson?s
Promontory in 1972 in heathland vegetation, but has not been located in this habitat
subsequently. The species was not trapped again until 1993 when it was found in calcarenite
dune woodland on the Yanakie Isthmus. The aims of this study were to assess the population
dynamics and habitat use of the species in this dune habitat. Mark-recapture trapping was
conducted at three sites from 1999 to 2002. One site was located on low (0 - 5 m), flat sand
dunes and open swales, another on medium (5 ? 10 m) vegetated dunes, and the third on high
(20 m) steep vegetated dunes. The three sites had not been burnt for 30 to 50 years. The
abundance of P. novaehollandiae was related to understorey vegetation density and differences
in population densities on the sites are likely to be related to the primary succession stages on
the sand dunes, rather than fire history. The maximum density (24 ha-1) recorded at one site was
very high compared to other Victorian populations, however this was followed by a substantial
decline in numbers within the year. At another site a small population declined to extinction.
Populations on the isthmus are thus capable of achieving high densities but may decline
quickly. Rainfall patterns may have affected the population fluctuations, but further research is
required to elucidate fully the factors involved in the long-term dynamics of this species.
