Somatosensory cortex in macaque monkeys: laminar differences in receptive field size in areas 3b and 1

We have examined receptive field sizes of neurons in granular, supragranular and infragranular layers within somatosensory cortical areas 3b and 1 in macaque monkeys. Receptive fields of neurons in layer 4 are smaller than receptive fields of neurons above or below layer 4. In addition, neurons in area 1 have larger receptive fields than neurons in corresponding layers of area 3b.

Primate frontal eye fields. II. Physiological and anatomical correlates of electrically evoked eye movements

We studied single neurons in the frontal eye fields of awake macaque monkeys and compared their activity with the saccadic eye movements elicited by microstimulation at the sites of these neurons. Saccades could be elicited from electrical stimulation in the cortical gray matter of the frontal eye fields with currents as small as 10 microA. Low thresholds for eliciting saccades were found at the sites of cells with presaccadic activity. Presaccadic neurons classified as visuomovement or movement were most associated with low (less than 50 microA) thresholds. High thresholds (greater than 100 microA) or no elicited saccades were associated with other classes of frontal eye field neurons, including neurons responding only after saccades and presaccadic neurons, classified as purely visual. Throughout the frontal eye fields, the optimal saccade for eliciting presaccadic neural activity at a given recording site predicted both the direction and amplitude of the saccades that were evoked by microstimulation at that site. In contrast, the movement fields of postsaccadic cells were usually different from the saccades evoked by stimulation at the sites of such cells. We defined the low-threshold frontal eye fields as cortex yielding saccades with stimulation currents less than or equal to 50 microA. It lies along the posterior portion of the arcuate sulcus and is largely contained in the anterior bank of that sulcus. It is smaller than Brodmann's area 8 but corresponds with the union of Walker's cytoarchitectonic areas 8A and 45. Saccade amplitude was topographically organized across the frontal eye fields. Amplitudes of elicited saccades ranged from less than 1 degree to greater than 30 degrees. Smaller saccades were evoked from the ventrolateral portion, and larger saccades were evoked from the dorsomedial portion. Within the arcuate sulcus, evoked saccades were usually larger near the lip and smaller near the fundus. Saccade direction had no global organization across the frontal eye fields; however, saccade direction changed in systematic progressions with small advances of the microelectrode, and all contralateral saccadic directions were often represented in a single electrode penetration down the bank of the arcuate sulcus. Furthermore, the direction of change in these progressions periodically reversed, allowing particular saccade directions to be multiply represented in nearby regions of cortex.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Primate frontal eye fields. I. Single neurons discharging before saccades

We studied the activity of single neurons in the frontal eye fields of awake macaque monkeys trained to perform several oculomotor tasks. Fifty-four percent of neurons discharged before visually guided saccades. Three different types of presaccadic activity were observed: visual, movement, and anticipatory. Visual activity occurred in response to visual stimuli whether or not the monkey made saccades. Movement activity preceded purposive saccades, even those made without visual targets. Anticipatory activity preceded even the cue to make a saccade if the monkey could reliably predict what saccade he had to make. These three different activities were found in different presaccadic cells in different proportions. Forty percent of presaccadic cells had visual activity (visual cells) but no movement activity. For about half of the visual cells the response was enhanced if the monkey made saccades to the receptive-field stimulus, but there was no discharge before similar saccades made without visual targets. Twenty percent of presaccadic neurons discharged as briskly before purposive saccades made without a visual target as they did before visually guided saccades, and had weak or absent visual responses. These cells were defined as movement cells. Movement cells discharged much less or not at all before saccades made spontaneously without a task requirement or an overt visual target. The remaining presaccadic neurons (40%) had both visual and movement activity (visuomovement cells). They discharged most briskly before visually guided eye movements, but also discharged before purposive eye movements made in darkness and responded to visual stimuli in the absence of saccades. There was a continuum of visuomovement cells, from cells in which visual activity predominated to cells in which movement activity predominated. This continuum suggests that although visual cells are quite distinct from movement cells, the division of cell types into three classes may be only a heuristic means of describing the processing flow from visual input to eye-movement output. Twenty percent of visuomovement and movement cells, but fewer than 2% of visual cells, had anticipatory activity. Only one cell had anticipatory activity as its sole response. When the saccade was delayed relative to the target onset, visual cells responded to the target appearance, movement cells discharged before the saccade, and visuomovement cells discharged in different ways during the delay, usually with some discharge following the target and an increase in rate immediately before the saccade. Presaccadic neurons of all types were actively suppressed following a saccade into their response fields.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Cerebral cortical activity associated with the orientation of visual attention in the rhesus monkey

Attentional mechanisms in the posterior parietal cortex and the frontal eye fields have been studied in the rhesus monkey. In each of these areas single neurons discharge in response to visual stimuli and the discharge is enhanced when the monkey makes a saccade to the stimulus. In the posterior parietal cortex this enhancement also occurs whenever the monkey attends to the target, regardless of the movement or nonmovement that the monkey might make. Conversely, neurons in the frontal eye fields give enhanced responses only before saccades, and some discharge before purposive saccades made to remembered targets, with no overt current visual guidance. Some cells in the frontal eye fields also anticipate the onset of predictable saccades.

Binocular differences in cortical receptive fields of kittens after rotationally disparate binocular experience

Kittens were afforded visual experience only while wearing goggles fitted with prisms that rotated the inputs to the two eyes equally but in opposite directions about the visual axes (16 degrees for experimental subjects, 0 degrees for control subjects). Subsequently, receptive-field organization of the visual cortex was studied, special attention being given to the preferred orientation centered about the prism rotation experienced during early development. Thus, for moderate amounts of relative rotation, the development of interocular matching of orientation specificity in binocular cells of the visual cortex reflects the correspondence of early visual input between the two eyes.

Operant conditioning of single-unit response patterns in visual cortex

Unit responses to photic stimuli were studied in cat visual cortex. After the baseline response pattern of a cell was determined, conditioning trials were given during which reinforcement was contingent upon increased firing during a selected segment of the poststimulus interval. Density of reinforcement increased substantially in about half the cells studied; significant increases in firing occurred within, but not outside, the criterion segment.
