Abstract
PURPOSE Use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) has been associated with an increased cataract risk. We aimed to assess cataract risk after exposure to SSRI or to other antidepressant drugs in a large electronic primary care database. DESIGN Case-control study. PARTICIPANTS The study population was derived from the UK-based Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD). We included patients with first-time cataract aged ≥40 years between 1995 and 2015 and an equal number of cataract-free controls matched on age, sex, general practice, date of cataract recording (i.e., index date), and years of history in the CPRD before the index date. METHODS We conducted conditional logistic regression analyses adjusted for body mass index, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, and systemic steroid use. Exposure of interest was the number of SSRI prescriptions and prescriptions for other antidepressant drugs. We further explored mutually exclusive use of single SSRI substances. In sensitivity analyses, we shifted the index date backwards by 2 years, and we restricted our analyses to cases and controls without a prior glaucoma diagnosis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Relative risk estimates as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS We identified 206 931 cataract cases and the same number of matched controls. Current long-term use of SSRI (≥20 prescriptions) was not associated with an increased cataract risk (adjusted OR, 0.99; 95% CI, 0.94-1.03). However, in a subset of patients aged 40 to 64 years, we found a slightly increased risk of cataract for long-term SSRI users (adjusted OR, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.15-1.34) compared with nonusers. CONCLUSIONS In these data, use of SSRI was not associated with an increased risk of cataract. The slightly increased OR for individuals younger than 65 years of age in association with long-term SSRI use needs to be investigated in further studies.

Abstract
Context Thyroid hormones influence kidney function and thereby might alter serum urate levels, a major risk factor for gouty arthritis. Objective To assess the risk of developing incident gout in association with hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Design Retrospective population-based case–control analysis. Setting UK-based Clinical Practice Research Datalink, a primary care research database. Patients We identified adult patients with a diagnosis of incident gout between 1990 and 2014. We matched one control to each gout case in terms of age, sex, general practice, calendar time, and years of active history in the database. Main outcome measure We used conditional logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for developing gout in association with hypo- or hyperthyroidism and adjusted for potential confounders. Results The study population encompassed 68,159 incident gout cases, of whom 78.8% were male, and the same number of matched controls. There was no increased risk of gout in patients with hypothyroidism: adjusted OR of gout of 1.12 (95% CI 1.05–1.20) compared with no hypothyroidism. Current short-term treatment of thyroid hormone replacement therapy was associated with an adjusted OR of gout of 1.54 (95% CI 1.24–1.92), compared with no treatment. Neither hyperthyroidism nor current treatment with thyroid suppression therapy was associated with gout (adjusted OR, 1.08 [95% CI 0.95–1.22] and 0.82 [95% CI 0.57–1.17], respectively). Conclusion This large observational study does not provide evidence that hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, irrespective of treatment, is associated with a clinically relevant increased risk of developing incident gout. There may be an exception among patients with newly diagnosed and treated hypothyroidism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A possible association between benzodiazepine use and Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been hypothesized in previous studies. OBJECTIVES Using claims data from the Helsana Group, a large Swiss health insurance provider, we examined the association between previous benzodiazepine use and the risk of AD. METHODS We conducted a matched case-control study and identified 1438 incident AD cases between 2013 and 2014 based on recorded first-time use of drugs used to treat AD [i.e., acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (donepezil, rivastigmine, and galantamine) and the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist memantine] and matched one control to each case on age, sex, index date, and residence (canton). Because the initiation of benzodiazepine use shortly before the AD diagnosis date may occur as a result of symptomatic treatment of prodromal symptoms of early major neurocognitive disorder, we introduced an induction period of 2 years before the AD diagnosis date. Additionally, we categorized medication use by duration of use prior to the index date using prescriptions. We applied conditional logistic regression analyses to calculate odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals and adjusted for use of antidepressants. RESULTS The crude odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of developing AD for patients starting benzodiazepine treatment was 1.71 (1.17-2.99) in the year before diagnosis and 1.19 (0.82-1.72) in the third year before diagnosis. After accounting for benzodiazepine use initiated during the prodromal phase, benzodiazepine use was not associated with an increased risk of developing AD; long-term benzodiazepine use (≥30 prescriptions) yielded an adjusted odds ratio of 0.78 (0.53-1.14). CONCLUSIONS After taking into consideration a possible protopathic bias in the 2 years preceding the AD diagnosis date, benzodiazepine use was not associated with an increased risk of developing AD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies suggest an increased risk of malignancy in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), although the findings were inconsistent. We used data from the clinical practice research datalink (CPRD) to further examine this association. METHODS Patients with a first-time diagnosis of IBD were randomly matched to an equally sized IBD-free comparison group. Multivariable adjusted hazard ratios (AHRs) for cancer risk were estimated using Cox's proportional hazard regression. A nested case-control analysis comprising IBD patients only was then conducted using conditional logistic regression to estimate the risk of cancer development according to IBD severity, disease duration and IBD therapy. RESULTS We identified 1077 cancers among 39,294 IBD or IBD-free patients followed between 1995 and 2012. There was no association between IBD and overall risk of cancer [AHR 1.11, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.98-1.25], but a borderline increase in the risk of lymphoproliferative malignancies was observed in patients with IBD (AHR 1.49, 95 % CI 1.00-2.23). Aminosalicylate use was significantly associated with reduced risk of all cancers [adjusted odds ratio (AOR), 0.72, 95 % CI 0.54-0.96], of intestinal cancer (AOR 0.33, 95 % 0.12-0.89) and of prostate cancer (AOR 0.32, 95 % 0.13-0.80). CONCLUSIONS There was no increased risk of cancer overall in individuals with IBD compared to IBD-free individuals. Consistent with previous findings, a reduction in cancer risk was observed in IBD patients using aminosalicylates, with a substantial reduction in prostate cancer risk. Further large-scale studies examining the relationship between IBD therapy and cancer risk appear to be warranted.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Antidepressant use has been associated with an increased risk of seizures. Evidence on the association between antidepressant use at therapeutic doses and seizures mainly comes from clinical trials that were not designed to investigate this potential relationship. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to assess the risk of first-time seizures in association with exposure to antidepressants in patients with depressive disorders. METHODS We conducted a retrospective follow-up study with a nested case-control analysis between 1998 and 2012, using data from the UK-based Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD). We estimated crude incidence rates with 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) of seizures in depressed patients who used selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), 'other antidepressants', no antidepressants, or who had used antidepressants in the past. To adjust for potential confounding, we estimated odds ratios of antidepressant drug use among cases with seizures and matched controls in a nested case-control analysis. RESULTS Of 151,005 depressed patients, 619 had an incident seizure during follow-up. Incidence rates per 10,000 person-years were 12.44 (95 % CI 10.67-14.21) in SSRI users, 15.44 (95 % CI 8.99-21.89) in SNRI users, 8.33 (95 % CI 4.68-11.98) in TCA users, 9.33 (95 % CI 6.19-12.46) in non-users of antidepressants, and 5.05 (95 % CI 4.49-5.62) in past users of antidepressants. In the case-control analysis, relative risk estimates for seizures were increased in current users of SSRIs (adjusted odds ratio 1.98, 95 % CI 1.48-2.66) and SNRIs (adjusted odds ratio 1.99, 95 % CI 1.20-3.29), but not TCAs (adjusted odds ratio 0.99, 95 % CI 0.63-1.53), compared with non-users. CONCLUSION Current use of SSRIs or SNRIs was associated with a twofold increased risk of first-time seizures compared with non-use, while current use of TCAs (mostly low dose) was not associated with seizures. Treatment initiation in SSRI and SNRI users was associated with a higher risk of seizures than longer-term treatment.

Abstract
Influenza may cause neuropsychiatric disorders, including confusion, delirium, convulsions, and encephalopathy. We conducted a case-control study to evaluate the association between diagnosed influenza and the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) using the UK-based Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD). We identified 19,463 patients who developed an incident AD diagnosis between 1998 and 2013 and matched them 1:1 to dementia-free controls on age, sex, general practice, calendar time and number of years of recorded history. We calculated adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of developing AD in association with previous influenza infections and stratified by number of infections prior to the AD diagnosis date. Patients with a previous influenza infection were not at an increased risk of developing AD as compared to those with no previous infection (aOR, 95% CI 0.94, 0.87-1.02) overall. Nor was increasing number of infections related to an increased risk of developing AD; the aOR (95% CI) for those with 1, 2, or ⩾3 episodes was 0.98 (0.90-1.07), 0.70 (0.56-0.88), and 0.92 (0.63-1.34), respectively. Presence of an underlying chronic inflammatory disease in those with an influenza infection did not increase the risk of developing AD (aOR, 95% CI 0.83, 0.71-0.96), either, and there was no association between the severity of influenza infections (based on recorded neurological or bacterial complications) and the risk of AD. In conclusion, considering the limitations of this large observational study, we found no association between influenza infections and the risk of developing AD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Emerging evidence suggests that diabetes may be a risk factor for osteoarthritis (OA). However, previous results on the association between diabetes and all OA were conflicting. We aimed to comprehensively analyse the association between type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and osteoarthritis of the hand (HOA) specifically. METHODS We conducted a matched (1:1) case-control study using the UK-based Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) of cases aged 30-90 years with an incident diagnosis of HOA from 1995 to 2013. In multivariable conditional logistic regression analyses, we calculated odds ratios (OR) for incident HOA in patients with T2DM, categorized by T2DM severity (HbA1C), duration, and pharmacological treatment. We further performed sensitivity analyses in patients with and without other metabolic diseases (hypertension (HT), hyperlipidaemia (HL), obesity). RESULTS Among 13,500 cases and 13,500 controls, we observed no statistically significant association between T2DM and HOA (OR 0.95, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.87-1.04), regardless of T2DM severity, duration, or pharmacological treatment. Having HT did not change the OR. Although we observed slightly increased ORs in overweight T2DM patients with co-occurring HL with or without coexisting HT, none of these ORs were statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Our results provide evidence that T2DM is not an independent risk factor for HOA. Concurrence of T2DM with HT, HL, and/or obesity did not change this association significantly.

Abstract
AIMS Previous studies suggest that diabetes causes alterations in tendon collagen structure, but evidence on how such findings translate into clinical practice is scarce. We aimed to analyze the association between type 2 diabetes and the risk of tendon rupture. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a matched case-control analysis using the UK-based Clinical Practice Research Datalink. Cases (n=7895) were aged 30-89years and had an incident diagnosis of Achilles- or biceps tendon rupture between 1995 and 2013. In multivariable logistic regression analyses we compared the odds of tendon rupture between patients with or without type 2 diabetes, in men and women separately, and taking into account diabetes severity (HbA1c), duration, and antidiabetic drug treatment. RESULTS Within 165 (7.1%) female cases with type 2 diabetes, odds ratios (ORs) were increased with poorer diabetes control (OR 2.03, 95% CI 1.20-3.41, HbA1c ≥9% [≥75mmol/mol]), longer disease duration (OR 1.60, 95% CI 0.93-2.74, ≥10years), and current insulin use (OR 2.25, 95% CI 1.30-3.90, ≥20 prescriptions). Among 372 (6.7%) male cases, there was no effect of type 2 diabetes on the risk of tendon rupture. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that the risk of tendon ruptures may be increased in women with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes, but not in men.

Abstract
PURPOSE The effect of bisphosphonates on extra-osseous tissue is rarely investigated. We performed an exploratory analysis on the association of new bisphosphonate use and incident tendon rupture in patients with or without oral glucocorticoid co-medication. METHODS We conducted a matched case-control study using data from the UK-based Clinical Practice Research Datalink. Cases were patients aged 30-89 years with an incident diagnosis of Achilles or biceps tendon rupture between 1995 and 2013. We compared new oral bisphosphonate use between cases and controls with or without oral glucocorticoid co-medication, by timing (last prescription </≥180 days) and duration (number of prescriptions) of bisphosphonate use. In a case-crossover analysis, we compared new bisphosphonate exposure in the event period and the control period controlling for glucocorticoid use. RESULTS Among 7859 cases, 246 (3.1%) were new users of bisphosphonates. Patients with glucocorticoid co-medication had an odds ratio (OR) for tendon rupture of 6.42 (95%CI 4.03-10.22) for short-term bisphosphonate use (≤4 prescriptions), which declined with increasing number of prescriptions. Among people with continuous prednisone use of 5-10 mg/day, bisphosphonate users with <9 prescriptions had an OR of 2.46 (95%CI 1.00-6.03), compared with bisphosphonate non-users. The case-crossover analysis yielded an OR of 4.46 (95%CI 2.76-7.20) for new bisphosphonate treatment in patients with glucocorticoid co-medication, and a null result in glucocorticoid non-users. CONCLUSIONS New bisphosphonate treatment may transiently increase the risk of tendon rupture in oral glucocorticoid users. Further research is needed to establish causality of this yet unreported adverse drug reaction or drug-drug interaction. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Doubling of serum creatinine is often used as a marker for worsening kidney function in nephrology trials. Most people with chronic kidney disease die of other causes before reaching end-stage renal disease. We were interested in the association between doubling of serum creatinine and the risk of a first-time diagnosis of angina pectoris, congestive heart failure (CHF), myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, or transient ischemic attack in patients with chronic kidney disease and with diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS We identified all adult patients registered in the "Clinical Practice Research Datalink" between 2002 and 2011 with incident chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus and did a cohort study with a Cox proportional hazard analysis. RESULTS We identified in total 27,811 patients, 693 developed angina pectoris, 1,069 CHF, 508 MI, 970 stroke, and 578 transient ischemic attacks. Patients whose serum creatinine doubled during follow-up had increased risks of CHF (hazard ratio [HR] 2.98, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.27-3.89), MI (HR 2.53, 95% CI 1.62-3.96), and stroke (HR 1.93, 95% CI 1.38-2.69), as compared with patients whose serum creatinine did not double. The relative risks of angina pectoris (HR 1.18, 95% CI 0.66-2.10) or a transient ischemic attack (HR 1.32, 95% CI 0.78-2.22) were similar in both groups. CONCLUSION Diabetic patients with a doubling of serum creatinine were at an increased risk of CHF, MI, or stroke, compared with diabetic patients whose serum creatinine did not double during follow-up.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Case-reports provided evidence that influenza infections, particularly severe episodes, may exert neuronal damage in the CNS and thereby increase the risk of depression. OBJECTIVE It was the aim of this study to analyse the association between influenza infections and the risk of developing incident depression. DESIGN We conducted a case-control analysis between 2000 and 2013 using the large UK-based primary care database Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD). SETTING This database contains anonymous longitudinal data from primary care. At present, it contains over 100 million person-years of data from some 10 million active patients. PARTICIPANTS We encompassed 103307 patients below the age of 80 years with an incident major depression diagnosis between 2000 and 2013, and matched each case to one control patient on age, sex, general practice, number of medical encounters, and years of history in the CPRD prior to the index date. EXPOSURE Major depression diagnosis was identified by READ-codes based on ICD-10 codes (F32), with a minimum of three prescriptions for antidepressant drugs recorded after the diagnosis. MAIN OUTCOME We calculated relative risk estimates of developing depression in association with previous influenza infections, stratified by the number, timing and severity of such events, and we adjusted for a variety of comorbidities, smoking status, alcohol intake, body mass index, use of oral corticosteroids, and benzodiazepines. RESULTS Patients with a previous influenza infection had an increased risk of developing depression (OR 1.30, 95%CI 1.25-1.34) compared to patients with no history of influenza infections. A recent influenza infection recorded within 30-180 days prior to the index date yielded an adjusted 1.57 (95%CI 1.36-1.81), and an increasing number of previous influenza infections was associated with increasing odds ratios (⩾ 3 recorded influenza infections, adjusted OR 1.48, 95%CI 1.22-1.81). CONCLUSION This study suggests that influenza infections are associated with a moderately increased risk of developing depression.

Abstract
Background Selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors are analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory drugs. They have been found to inhibit the development of glioma in laboratory investigations. Whether these drugs reduce the risk of glioma incidence in humans is unknown. Methods We conducted a matched case-control analysis using the U.K.-based Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD). We identified 2,469 cases matched to 24,690 controls on age, sex, calendar time, general practice, and number of years of active history in the CPRD prior to the index date. We conducted conditional logistic regression analyses to determine relative risks, estimated as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of glioma in relation to use of selective COX-2 inhibitors, adjusted for several confounding variables. Results Use of selective COX-2 inhibitors was unrelated to risk of glioma (adjusted OR for 1–9 versus 0 prescriptions = 1.02; 95% CI = 0.92–1.13, 10–29 versus 0 prescriptions = 1.01; 95% CI = 0.80–1.28, ≥30 versus 0 prescriptions = 1.16; 95% CI = 0.86–1.55). Trends for increasing numbers of prescriptions for other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and non-NSAID analgesics were also not associated with glioma risk. Conclusion Further epidemiologic studies are needed to confirm the null relation of use of selective COX-2 inhibitors to glioma risk and to explain the discrepancy between laboratory investigations and our observational study. Impact: Use of selective COX-2 inhibitors is unrelated to glioma risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An increased risk of autoimmune disease has been reported in patients with inflammatory bowel disease [IBD]. Using data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink [CPRD], this study set out to further examine this relationship. METHODS Patients with a first-time IBD diagnosis were randomly matched to an equal-sized IBD-free comparison group. Incidence rates for new-onset autoimmune diseases were estimated. A nested case-control analysis comprising IBD patients was conducted, using conditional logistic regression to assess whether IBD severity, duration, or treatment influences the risk of developing autoimmune diseases. RESULTS During follow-up, 1069 IBD and 585 IBD-free patients developed an incident autoimmune disease. An increased incidence of autoimmune disease was observed in IBD patients (incidence rate [IR] 9.65, 95% confidence interval [CI] 9.09-10.24) compared with the non-IBD comparison group [IR 5.22, 95% CI 4.82-5.66]. In IBD patients, increased disease severity was associated with an increased risk of autoimmune disease development (odds ratio [OR] 1.62, 95% CI 1.28-2.05). Current antibiotic use was also associated with an increased risk [adjusted OR 1.72, 95% CI 1.07-2.78]. A reduced risk of incident autoimmune diseases was observed for current long-term users of aminosalicylates [adjusted OR 0.72, 95% CI 0.57-0.91]. CONCLUSIONS Individuals with IBD had an increased risk of developing an autoimmune disease. Increased disease severity and current antibiotic use were associated with an increased relative risk of developing additional autoimmune diseases in IBD patients. Long-term current aminosalicylate use was associated with a reduced risk.

Abstract
Objectives We analysed potential drug-drug interactions (DDI) in ambulatory care in Switzerland based on claims data from three large health insurers in 2010 to identify physicians with peculiar prescription behaviour differing from peers of the same specialty. Methods We analysed contraindicated or potentially contraindicated DDI from the national drug formulary and calculated for each physician the ratios of the number of patients with a potential DDI divided by the number of patients at risk and used a zero inflated binomial distribution to correct for the inflated number of observations with no DDI. We then calculated the probability that the number of caused potential DDI of physicians was unlikely (p-value < 0.05 and ≥0.01) and very unlikely (p-value <0.01) to be due to chance. Results Of 1'607'233 females and 1'525'307 males 1.3% and 1.2% were exposed to at least one potential DDI during 12 months. When analysing the 40 most common DDI, 598 and 416 of 18,297 physicians (3.3% and 2.3%) were causing potential DDI in a frequency unlikely (p<0.05 and p≥0.01) and very unlikely (p<0.01) to be explained by chance. Patients cared by general practitioners and cardiologists had the lowest probability (0.20 and 0.26) for not being exposed to DDI. Conclusions Contraindicated or potentially contraindicated DDI are frequent in ambulatory care in Switzerland, with a small proportion of physicians causing potential DDI in a frequency that is very unlikely to be explained by chance when compared to peers of the same specialty.

Abstract
Background Use of metformin has been associated with a decreased cancer risk. We aimed to explore whether use of metformin or other antidiabetic drugs is associated with a decreased risk for thyroid cancer. Methods We conducted a case-control analysis (1995 to 2014) using the U.K.-based Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD). Cases had a first-time diagnosis of thyroid cancer, six controls per case were matched on age, sex, calendar time, general practice, and number of years of active history in the database prior to the index date. We assessed odds ratios (ORs) with 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CI), adjusted for body mass index (BMI), smoking, and diabetes mellitus. Results In 1229 cases and 7374 matched controls, the risk of thyroid cancer associated with ever use of metformin yielded an adjusted OR of 1.48, 95 % CI 0.86–2.54. The relative risk estimate was highest in long-term (≥30 prescriptions) users of metformin (adjusted OR 1.83, 95 % CI 0.92–3.65), based on a limited number of 26 exposed cases. No such association was found in users of sulfonylurea, insulin, or thiazolidinediones (TZD). Neither a diabetes diagnosis (adjusted OR 1.17, 95 % CI 0.89–1.54), nor diabetes duration >8 years (adjusted OR 1.22, 95 % CI 0.60–2.51) altered the risk of thyroid cancer. Conclusion In our observational study with limited statistical power, neither use of metformin nor of other antidiabetic drugs were associated with a decreased risk of thyroid cancer.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Medication prescribing errors (MPE) can result in serious consequences for patients. In order to reduce errors, we need to know more about the frequency, the type and the severity of such errors. We therefore performed a prospective observational study to determine the number and type of medication prescribing errors in critically ill children in a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Prescribing errors were prospectively identified by a clinical pharmacist. A total of 1129 medication orders were analysed. There were 151 prescribing errors, giving an overall error rate of 14 % (95 % CI 11 to 16). The medication groups with the highest proportion of MPEs were antihypertensives, antimycotics and drugs for nasal preparation with error rates of each 50 %, followed by antiasthmatic drugs (25 %), antibiotics (15 %) and analgesics (14 %). One hundred four errors (70 %) were classified as MPEs which required interventions and/or resulted in patient harm equivalent to 9 % of all medication orders (95 % CI 6.5 to 14.4). Forty-five MPEs (30 %) did not result in patient harm. CONCLUSION With a view to reduce MPEs and to improve patient safety, our data may help to prevent errors before they occur. WHAT IS KNOWN • Prescribing errors may be the most frequent medication errors. • In paediatric populations, the incidence of prescribing errors is higher than in adults. What is New: • Several risk factors for medication prescribing errors, such as medication groups, long PICU stay, and mechanical ventilation could be presented. • Analysing the combination of the most frequent prescribing errors and the severity of these errors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Print media are a major source of health information. OBJECTIVES To analyse press coverage related to skin cancer prevention. METHODS We conducted a content analysis of print media articles pertaining to skin cancer prevention, solaria and vitamin D published in Germany and Switzerland over a 1-year period between 2012 and 2013. RESULTS Overall, 2,103 articles were analysed. Applying sunscreen was by far the most common sun protection recommendation. A considerable number of articles on solaria and vitamin D advocated exposure to ultraviolet radiation to enhance physical appearance and vitamin D photosynthesis, often without mentioning any precaution measures. In total, 26.8% of the articles contained misleading or erroneous statements mostly related to sunscreen use and vitamin D issues. CONCLUSIONS Print media can serve as powerful education tools to foster skin cancer prevention. However, misleading or erroneous reports may negatively impact sun-safe behaviour.
