Abstract
The Ferdinand Eisenberger scholarship program provides interested young urologists with the chance to undertake intensive experimental investigations for a 1-year period outside the clinical routine. Within the framework of a scientific project scholarship holders acquire competence in research and establish important contacts for themselves as well as for their institutions to scientists and research laboratories excelling in basic research. In contrast to scholarships awarded by the large funding institutions, such as the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) and German Cancer Aid (Deutsche Krebshilfe), the Eisenberger scholarships concentrate on host laboratories in Germany. In this way the German Society of Urology (DGU) hopes to strengthen the research infrastructure of urology in Germany with effective regional and national networks.

Abstract
This pilot study investigated feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a high-intensity functional training (HIFT) group-exercise programme among adult cancer survivors within 5 years of last cancer treatment. Eight participants were assigned to a 5-week, 3 days/week HIFT intervention with four testing sessions and 12 workouts along with mobility and stretching exercises. Feasibility was assessed by initiation, adherence, and acceptability. Efficacy was determined by changes from baseline to post-test in health-related quality of life, body composition and functional movement. The recruitment rate was 80% and the adherence rate was 75%. Significant improvements were found for emotional functioning (P = 0.042) and body composition (lean mass +3.8 ± 2.1 kg, P = 0.008; fat mass -3.3 ± 1.0 kg, P = 0.001; body fat percentage -4.7 ± 1.2%, P < 0.001). Participants also significantly improved on five of seven functional movements: balance (P = 0.032), carrying a weighted object (P = 0.004), lower body strength and power (P = 0.009), aerobic capacity and endurance (P = 0.039), and perceived difficulty for flexibility (P = 0.012). Five weeks of HIFT training was well-received and feasible for most cancer survivors, and effective for improving emotional functioning, body composition and functional movement.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The aim of this study was to explore the increased risk of stroke survivors to different sustained osteoporotic fractures. We used hospital data and data on functional impairment. We found a higher risk in stroke survivors without functional impairment with the risk higher for lower than for upper extremity fractures. INTRODUCTION Stroke survivors are at high risk of osteoporotic fractures due to frequent falls and an increased risk to develop osteoporosis. Data on their relative risk to sustain other than hip fractures is limited. Furthermore, the role of severe functional impairment on their fracture risk has not been considered yet. The aim of this study was to determine the relative risk of stroke survivors to sustain different osteoporotic fractures with regard to the presence of severe functional impairment. METHODS Data from 2004 to 2009 of more than 1.2 million individuals aged 65 years or older and insured at a large German health insurance company were used for the analyses. Incident stroke and fractures were obtained from hospital diagnoses. Analyses were stratified by gender and information on severe functional impairment. Persons without preceding incident stroke were used as the reference group. Multistate models were used to estimate hazard ratios. RESULTS Stroke survivors had a higher risk for fractures. However, a strong effect modification by functional impairment was apparent. Stroke survivors with functional impairment had no significantly increased risk for any fractures site compared to the corresponding reference group with functional impairment. In contrast, stroke survivors without functional impairment had a clearly and significantly increased fracture risk for most fracture sites. In these persons, the relative fracture risk for fractures of the lower extremities was higher than for fractures of the upper extremities. CONCLUSION To evaluate the relative risk of stroke survivors for osteoporotic fractures, functional status appears to be a relevant parameter.

Abstract
Automatic fall detection will reduce the consequences of falls in the elderly and promote independent living, ensuring people can confidently live safely at home. Inertial sensor technology can distinguish falls from normal activities. However, <;7% of studies have used fall data recorded from elderly people in real life. The FARSEEING project has compiled a database of real life falls from elderly people, to gain new knowledge about fall events. We have extracted temporal and kinematic parameters to further improve the development of fall detection algorithms. A total of 100 real-world falls were analysed. Subjects with a known fall history were recruited, inertial sensors were attached to L5 and a fall report, following a fall, was used to extract the fall signal. This data-set was examined, and variables were extracted that include upper and lower impact peak values, posture angle change during the fall and time of occurrence. These extracted parameters, can be used to inform the design of fall-detection algorithms for real-world falls detection in the elderly.

Geriatric rehabilitation after hip fracture. Role of body-fixed sensor measurements of physical activity. Z Gerontol Geriatr 2014; 47:236-42. Abstract
BACKGROUND The demand for geriatric rehabilitation will drastically increase over the next years. It will be increasingly important to demonstrate the efficacy and effectiveness of geriatric rehabilitation. One component is the use of objective and valid assessment procedures. These should be understandable to patients, relevant for goal attainment, and able to document change. A number of currently used physical capacity measures have floor effects. The use of body-fixed sensor technology for monitoring physical activity is a possible supplement for the assessment during geriatric rehabilitation to overcome floor effects and directly monitor improvement of mobility as a component of geriatric rehabilitation in many patients. METHODS The observational study with a pre-post design examined 65 consecutive geriatric hip fracture inpatients. Measurements were performed on admission and 2 weeks later. The capacity measures included gait speed, chair rise time, a balance test, 2-Minute-Walk test and the Timed-Up-and-Go test. Physical activity was measured over 9 h using body-fixed sensor technology and expressed as cumulated walking and walking plus standing (time on feet). RESULTS Body-fixed sensors allowed direct measurement of physical activity in all patients available for testing. Cumulated walking and standing (time on feet) increased from a median 83.6 to 102.6 min. Cumulated walking increased from a median 7.0 to 16.3 min. The comparison with the physical capacity measures demonstrated a modest to fair correlation (rs = 0.455 and 0.653). This indicates that physical capacity measures are not the same construct as physical activity. CONCLUSION Body-fixed sensor-based assessment of physical activity was feasible even in geriatric patients with severe mobility problems and decreased the number of patients with missing data both on admission and 2 weeks later. Body-fixed sensor data documented change in activity level.

Abstract
Over last 20 years, extracellular matrices have been shown to be useful in promoting tissue regeneration. Recently, they have been used and have had success in achieving neurogenesis. Recent developments in extracellular matrix design have allowed their successful in vivo incorporation to engender an environment favorable for neural regeneration in animal models. Promising treatments under investigation include manipulation of the intrinsic extracellular matrix and incorporation of engineered naometer-sized scaffolds through which inhibition of molecules serving as barriers to neuroregeneration and delivery of neurotrophic factors and/or cells for successful tissue regeneration can be achieved. Further understanding of the changes incurred within the extracellular matrix following central nervous system injury will undoubtedly help design a clinically efficacious extracellular matrix scaffold that can mitigate or reverse neural degeneration in the clinical setting.

Abstract
AIMS Metformin use has been associated with a decreased risk of some cancers, although data on head and neck cancer (HNC) are scarce. We explored the relation between the use of antidiabetic drugs and the risk of HNC. METHODS We conducted a case-control analysis in the UK-based Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) of people with incident HNC between 1995 and 2013 below the age of 90 years. Six controls per case were matched on age, sex, calendar time, general practice and number of years of active history in the CPRD prior to the index date. Other potential confounders including body mass index (BMI), smoking, alcohol consumption and comorbidities were also evaluated. The final analyses were adjusted for BMI, smoking and diabetes mellitus (or diabetes duration in a sensitivity analysis). Results are presented as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS Use of metformin was neither associated with a statistically significant altered risk of HNC overall (1-29 prescriptions: adjusted OR 0.87, 95% CI 0.61-1.24 and ≥ 30 prescriptions adjusted OR 0.80, 95% CI 0.53-1.22), nor was long-term use of sulphonylureas (adjusted OR 0.87, 95% CI 0.59-1.30), or any insulin use (adjusted OR 0.92, 95% CI 0.63-1.35). However, we found a (statistically non-significant) decreased risk of laryngeal cancer associated with long-term metformin use (adjusted OR 0.41, 95% CI 0.17-1.03). CONCLUSIONS In this population-based study, the use of antidiabetic drugs was not associated with a materially altered risk of HNC. Our data suggest a protective effect of long-term metformin use for laryngeal cancer.

Abstract
Nonimmunosuppressive cyclophilin inhibitors have demonstrated efficacy for the treatment of hepatitis C infection (HCV). However, alisporivir, cyclosporin A, and most other cyclosporins are potent inhibitors of OATP1B1, MRP2, MDR1, and other important drug transporters. Reduction of the side chain hydrophobicity of the P4 residue preserves cyclophilin binding and antiviral potency while decreasing transporter inhibition. Representative inhibitor 33 (NIM258) is a less potent transporter inhibitor relative to previously described cyclosporins, retains anti-HCV activity in cell culture, and has an acceptable pharmacokinetic profile in rats and dogs. An X-ray structure of 33 bound to rat cyclophilin D is reported.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Falls among older people remain a major public health challenge. Body-worn sensors are needed to improve the understanding of the underlying mechanisms and kinematics of falls. The aim of this systematic review is to assemble, extract and critically discuss the information available in published studies, as well as the characteristics of these investigations (fall documentation and technical characteristics). METHODS The searching of publically accessible electronic literature databases for articles on fall detection with body-worn sensors identified a collection of 96 records (33 journal articles, 60 conference proceedings and 3 project reports) published between 1998 and 2012. These publications were analysed by two independent expert reviewers. Information was extracted into a custom-built data form and processed using SPSS (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). RESULTS The main findings were the lack of agreement between the methodology and documentation protocols (study, fall reporting and technical characteristics) used in the studies, as well as a substantial lack of real-world fall recordings. A methodological pitfall identified in most articles was the lack of an established fall definition. The types of sensors and their technical specifications varied considerably between studies. CONCLUSION Limited methodological agreement between sensor-based fall detection studies using body-worn sensors was identified. Published evidence-based support for commercially available fall detection devices is still lacking. A worldwide research group consensus is needed to address fundamental issues such as incident verification, the establishment of guidelines for fall reporting and the development of a common fall definition.

Abstract
The physiological balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory processes is dysregulated in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) as in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Conventional therapy uses anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive corticosteroids to treat acute-phase symptoms. However, low remission rate and strong side effects of these therapies are not satisfying. Thus, there is a high medical need for new therapeutic strategies. Soluble CD83, the extracellular domain of the transmembrane CD83 molecule, has been reported to have interesting therapeutic and immunosuppressive properties by suppressing dendritic cell (DC)-mediated T-cell activation and inducing tolerogenic DCs. However, the expression and function of CD83 in IBD is still unknown. Here, we show that CD83 expression is upregulated by different leukocyte populations in a chemical-induced murine colitis model. Furthermore, in this study the potential of sCD83 to modulate colitis using an experimental murine colitis model was investigated. Strikingly, sCD83 ameliorated the clinical disease symptoms, drastically reduced mortality, and strongly decreased inflammatory cytokine expression in mesenteric lymph nodes and colon. The infiltration of macrophages and granulocytes into colonic tissues was vigorously inhibited. Mechanistically, we could show that sCD83-induced expression of indolamine 2,3-dioxygenase is essential for its protective effects.

Abstract
STUDY QUESTION What is the optimal management of women with endometriosis based on the best available evidence in the literature? SUMMARY ANSWER Using the structured methodology of the Manual for ESHRE Guideline Development, 83 recommendations were formulated that answered the 22 key questions on optimal management of women with endometriosis. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY The European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis (2005) has been a reference point for best clinical care in endometriosis for years, but this guideline was in need of updating. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION This guideline was produced by a group of experts in the field using the methodology of the Manual for ESHRE Guideline Development, including a thorough systematic search of the literature, quality assessment of the included papers up to January 2012 and consensus within the guideline group on all recommendations. To ensure input from women with endometriosis, a patient representative was part of the guideline development group. In addition, patient and additional clinical input was collected during the scoping and review phase of the guideline. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS NA. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE The guideline provides 83 recommendations on diagnosis of endometriosis and on the treatment of endometriosis-associated pain and infertility, on the management of women in whom the disease is found incidentally (without pain or infertility), on prevention of recurrence of disease and/or painful symptoms, on treatment of menopausal symptoms in patients with a history of endometriosis and on the possible association of endometriosis and malignancy. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION We identified several areas in care of women with endometriosis for which robust evidence is lacking. These areas were addressed by formulating good practice points (GPP), based on the expert opinion of the guideline group members. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS Since 32 out of the 83 recommendations for the management of women with endometriosis could not be based on high level evidence and therefore were GPP, the guideline group formulated research recommendations to guide future research with the aim of increasing the body of evidence. STUDY FUNDING/COMPETING INTEREST(S) The guideline was developed and funded by ESHRE, covering expenses associated with the guideline meetings, with the literature searches and with the implementation of the guideline. The guideline group members did not receive payment. All guideline group members disclosed any relevant conflicts of interest (see Conflicts of interest). TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NA.

Abstract
The popularity of supermicrosurgery has increased dramatically over the past few years, but the lack of agreement regarding the name of the technique and its applications has caused misunderstandings among microsurgeons when trying to communicate and compare surgical procedures. We report the consensus reached on the name used to refer to supermicrosurgery techniques following the First European Conference on Supramicrosurgery held in Barcelona (Spain) on March 4-5, 2010. Present applications, advantages, and disadvantages of supermicrosurgery are discussed. It was agreed that supermicrosurgery was the most accurate name to reflect the essence of this extremely delicate technique. According to Koshima, supermicrosurgery is a technique of microneurovascular anastomosis for vessels of 0.3 to 0.8 mm and single nerve fascicles. The range of applications for this technique has increased rapidly and now includes lymphedema treatment, nerve reconstruction, replantation and reconstruction of amputated fingertips, microsurgical flap salvage, and new possibilities for free tissue transfer. Supermicrosurgery is a remarkably useful reconstructive tool that involves a great deal of skill and has a steep learning curve for the microsurgeon to master. Although it is currently performed by only a minority of microsurgeons, we consider it will be incorporated into conventional microsurgery in the near future.

Combined use of post-ion mobility/collision-induced dissociation and chemometrics for b fragment ion analysis. JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR MASS SPECTROMETRY 2013; 24:1355-1365. Abstract
Although structural isomers may yield indistinguishable ion mobility (IM) arrival times and similar fragment ions in tandem mass spectrometry (MS), it is demonstrated that post-IM/collision-induced dissociation MS (post-IM/CID MS) combined with chemometrics can enable independent study of the IM-overlapped isomers. The new approach allowed us to investigate the propensity of selected b type fragment ions from AlaAlaAlaHisAlaAlaAla-NH2 (AAA(His)AAA) heptapeptide to form different isomers. Principle component analysis (PCA) of the unresolved post-IM/CID profiles indicated the presence of two different isomer types for b4(+), b5(+), and b6(+) and a single isomer type for b7(+) fragments of AAA(His)AAA. We employed a simple-to-use interactive self-modeling mixture analysis (SIMPLISMA) to calculate the total IM profiles and CID mass spectra of b fragment isomers. The deconvoluted CID mass spectra showed discernible fragmentation patterns for the two isomers of b4(+), b5(+), and b6(+) fragments. Under our experimental conditions, calculated percentages of the "cyclic" isomers (at the 95% confidence level for n = 3) for b4(+), b5(+), and b6(+) were 61 (± 5)%, 36 (± 5)%, and 48 (± 2)%, respectively. Results from the SIMPLISMA deconvolution of b5(+) species resembled the CID MS patterns of fully resolved IM profiles for the two b5(+) isomers. The "cyclic" isomers for each of the two-component b fragment ions were less susceptible to ion fragmentation than their "linear" counterparts.

Abstract
We report on the detailed study of multicomponent spin waves in an s=3/2 Fermi gas where the high spin leads to novel tensorial degrees of freedom compared to s=1/2 systems. The excitations of a spin-nematic state are investigated from the linear to the nonlinear regime, where the tensorial character is particularly pronounced. By tuning the initial state we engineer the tensorial spin-wave character, such that the magnitude and the sign of the counterflow spin currents are effectively controlled. A comparison of our data with numerical and analytical results shows good agreement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Liver transplantation (OLT) in the setting of portal vein thrombosis (PVT) has been a matter of controversy in the past. We herein report our experience with OLT for PVT in the absence of hepatocellular carcinoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS Data from patients undergoing OLT for end-stage liver disease, having a documented PVT before OLT, were reviewed. RESULTS Twenty-five patients were included for the period July, 2003 to December, 2009. There were 20 men and 5 women of median age 57 years. Median values for waiting time and Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score were 150 days and 18, respectively. PVT was classified as grade II (n = 6), IIIa (n = 7), IIIb (n = 9), or IVa (n = 3). Partial portal vein resection/reconstruction, operative thrombectomy, and eversion thromboendovenectomy were performed in 2, 16, and 7 instances, respectively. After a median follow-up of 18 months, 14 patients are alive. Survival rates at 3, 6, 9, and 12, months and 3 years post-OLT were 68%, 64%, 61%, 61%, and 61%, respectively. PVT grade was a negative predictor of survival by Cox proportional hazard analysis (P = .0253). CONCLUSION Despite the technical innovations in recent years, PVT grade correlated with poor patient survival irrespective of the surgical technique.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to examine the total and osteoporosis-attributable inpatient costs of 16 fracture types accrued in the German hospital sector in the year 2009. METHODS To calculate the inpatient fracture costs in the hospital sector we combined data from different official German statistics, i.e., fracture-specific diagnosis data from female and male inpatients in 2009, population data, fracture-specific diagnosis-related groups (DRGs), and per diem capital costs in hospitals. The share of fractures which were attributable to osteoporosis had been estimated by the epidemiological concept of "population attributable risk". Calculation of these risks was based on empirical data obtained from the national and international literature. RESULTS For the year 2009 the total inpatient costs accrued by the 16 fracture types considered in our analyses amounted to 2.4 billion Euros. Of these, 860 million Euros (36%) were attributable to osteoporosis. The main cost drivers were hip fractures. CONCLUSION Fractures accrue relevant hospital costs in Germany. In order to use the limited resources of the German health-care system in an efficient way, future measures to reduce the number of incident fractures should be designed and evaluated in terms of cost-effectiveness.

Abstract
Falls are by far the leading cause of fractures and accidents in the home environment. The current Cochrane reviews and other systematic reviews report on more than 200 intervention studies about fall prevention. A recent meta-analysis has summarized the most important risk factors of accidental falls. However, falls and fall-related injuries remain a major challenge. One novel approach to recognize, analyze, and work better toward preventing falls could be the differentiation of the fall event into separate phases. This might aid in reconsidering ways to design preventive efforts and diagnostic approaches. From a conceptual point of view, falls can be separated into a pre-fall phase, a falling phase, an impact phase, a resting phase, and a recovery phase. Patient and external observers are often unable to give detailed comments concerning these phases. With new technological developments, it is now at least partly possible to examine the phases of falls separately and to generate new hypotheses. The article describes the practicality and the limitations of this approach using body-fixed sensor technology. The features of the different phases are outlined with selected real-world fall signals.

Cost-effectiveness of a multifactorial fall prevention program in nursing homes. Osteoporos Int 2013; 24:1215-23. Abstract
UNLABELLED The purpose of this study was to analyze the cost-effectiveness of a multifactorial fall prevention program in nursing home residents. Given a willingness-to-pay (WTP) of 50,000 EUR per year free of femoral fracture, the probability that the intervention is cost-effective is 83%. INTRODUCTION Despite their increased risk of falls and fractures, nursing home residents have been neglected in economic evaluations of fall prevention programs so far. The purpose of this study was to analyze, for the first time, the cost-effectiveness of a multifactorial fall prevention program in nursing home residents. METHODS This study is part of a prospective, unblinded, cluster, nonrandomized, controlled study focusing on the transfer of an efficacious fall prevention program into a real-world setting. The analyzed subsample was derived from claims data and consisted of data on intervention (n=256, residents n=10,178) and control homes (n=893, residents n=22,974), representing all insurants of a sickness fund (AOK Bavaria, Germany) who were 65 years or older, residing in a nursing home on the 31st of March 2007 and had a level of care of ≥1 according to the classification of the statutory long-term care insurance. Time free of femoral fracture (ICD-10, S72) was used as measure of health effects. Femoral fracture-related costs and intervention costs were measured from a payer perspective. Multivariate regression models were applied. Sensitivity analyses were performed and cost-effectiveness acceptability curves computed. RESULTS Within the first year of the intervention, femoral fracture rate was significantly reduced, resulting in a nonsignificant incremental mean time of 1.41 days free of femoral fracture. Incremental mean total direct costs were 29 EUR per resident, which was not significant. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was 7,481 EUR per year free of femoral fracture. The probability of an ICER<50,000 EUR per year free of femoral fracture was 83%. CONCLUSION Depending on the amount the decision-maker is willing to pay for the incremental effect, the fall prevention program might be cost-effective within the first year. Future studies should expand the range of costs and effects measured.

Byonic: advanced peptide and protein identification software. ACTA ACUST UNITED AC 2013; Chapter 13:13.20.1-13.20.14. Abstract
Byonic is the name of a software package for peptide and protein identification by tandem mass spectrometry. This software, which has only recently become commercially available, facilitates a much wider range of search possibilities than previous search software such as SEQUEST and Mascot. Byonic allows the user to define an essentially unlimited number of variable modification types. Byonic also allows the user to set a separate limit on the number of occurrences of each modification type, so that a search may consider only one or two chance modifications such as oxidations and deamidations per peptide, yet allow three or four biological modifications such as phosphorylations, which tend to cluster together. Hence, Byonic can search for tens or even hundreds of modification types simultaneously without a prohibitively large combinatorial explosion. Byonic's Wildcard Search allows the user to search for unanticipated or even unknown modifications alongside known modifications. Finally, Byonic's Glycopeptide Search allows the user to identify glycopeptides without prior knowledge of glycan masses or glycosylation sites.

Abstract
We report on a 39-year-old female patient who developed catatonia after there had been schizomanic symptoms in the six months before. At admission the patient exhibited catatonia, a tetraspastic syndrome and focal epileptic seizures. The cranial MRI revealed bilateral subcortical hyperintense lesions which took up contrast agent. Examination of the cerebrospinal fluid disclosed a lymphocytic pleocytosis and autochthone oligoclonal bands. In the serum autoantibodies against the NMDA-NR-1 receptor were reproducibly detected. A detailed search for a tumour was negative. In detail, we could exclude a neoplasm of the ovaries which is often present in the paraneoplastic type of anti-NMDA-receptor encephalitis. Therefore we assume an autoimmune, not paraneoplastic, encephalitis in our patient. The symptoms improved significantly after an immunosuppressive therapy - initially with glucocorticoids followed by rituximab - had been initiated. This case illustrates that an autoimmune encephalitis should be looked for when first psychotic symptoms occur.

Abstract
We report on the experimental observation of an analog to a persistent alternating photocurrent in an ultracold gas of fermionic atoms in an optical lattice. The dynamics is induced and sustained by an external harmonic confinement. While particles in the excited band exhibit long-lived oscillations with a momentum-dependent frequency, a strikingly different behavior is observed for holes in the lowest band. An initial fast collapse is followed by subsequent periodic revivals. Both observations are fully explained by mapping the system onto a nonlinear pendulum.

Prececal digestibility of various sources of starch in minipigs with or without experimentally induced exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. J Anim Sci 2013; 90 Suppl 4:83-5. Abstract
Low prececal digestibility of starch leads to a higher starch flux into the hindgut, causing a forced microbial fermentation, energy losses, and meteorism. For exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), lack of pancreatic amylase can be compensated mostly by hindgut fermentation of starch. Even in pigs with complete loss of pancreatic secretion, starch digestibility over the entire tract is reaching levels of controls. To optimize diets for human patients with EPI, the proportion of starch that is digested by the ileum is important. Minipigs were fitted with an ileocecal reentrant fistula (n = 8) to determine prececal digestibility of starch. In 5 minipigs the pancreatic duct was ligated (PL) to induce EPI; 3 minipigs served as controls (Con). Various starch sources were tested in a 1-d screening test; therefore, disappearance rate (DR) instead of digestibility was used. Test meals consisted of 169 g DM of a basal diet plus 67.5 g DM of the starch (without thermal treatment; purified; starch content of 89 to 94.5%) and Cr(2)O(3). The test meal contained (% of DM) starch, 67; crude fat, 1.69; CP, 15; crude fiber, 2.0; and Cr(2)O(3), 0.25. In PL, prececal DR of starch was lower than in Con (P < 0.05) for all starch sources. In Con, prececal DR of starch was almost complete (>90%) but was lower (P < 0.05) for potato (Solanum tuberosum) starch (75.4%). In PL, prececal DR of starch was higher (P < 0.05) for wheat (Triticum aestivum) starch (61.2%) than corn (Zea mays) starch (43.0%) and rice (Oryza sativa) starch (29.2%) and intermediate for potato and field pea (Pisum sativum) starch. For patients with EPI, wheat starch seems favorable due to the higher prececal digestibility whereas raw corn and rice starch should be avoided.
