Abstract
BACKGROUND Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic disease with an unpredictable disease course and severe psychological impact. OBJECTIVE To provide evidence- and consensus-based insights regarding the treatment of patients with AA in Korea. METHODS We searched for relevant studies on the topical and device-based treatment of AA in the literature from inception until May 2021. Evidence-based recommendations were also prepared. The evidence for each statement was graded and classified according to the strength of the recommendations. Hair experts from the Korean Hair Research Society (KHRS) voted on the statements, and an agreement of 75% or greater was considered as consensus. RESULTS Currently, there remains a scarcity of topical treatments, which is supported by robust evidence from a number of high-quality randomized controlled trials. Current evidence supports the efficacy of topical corticosteroids, corticosteroid intralesional injection, and contact immunotherapy in AA patients. Topical corticosteroids and contact immunotherapy are recommended for pediatric AA. A consensus was achieved in 6 out of 14 (42.8%), and 1 out of 5 (20.0%) statements pertaining to topical and device-based treatments in AA, respectively. The expert consensus was from a single country, and the study may not cover all the treatments used. CONCLUSION The present study provides up-to-date, evidence-based treatment guidelines for AA based on the consensus reached among experts after considering regional healthcare circumstances, adding diversity to the previous guidelines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pyrazinamide (PZA) is often used as an add-on agent in the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, regardless of phenotypic drug susceptibility testing (pDST) results. However, evaluating the effectiveness of PZA is challenging because of its low pH activity, which can result in unreliable pDST results. This study aimed to investigate the genomic characteristics associated with PZA resistance that can be used to develop genotypic DST. MATERIALS AND METHODS A publicly available whole genome sequencing (WGS) dataset of 10,725 Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex genomes (3,326 phenotypically PZA-resistant and 7,399 phenotypically PZA-susceptible isolates) were analyzed. RESULTS In total, 2,934 pncA non-silent mutations were identified in 2,880 isolates (26.9%). Detected mutations were found throughout the entire coding region of pncA in a scattered pattern, of which the most frequent mutation was p.Q10P (n = 278), followed by p.H57D (n = 167) and c.-11A>G (n = 122). The sensitivity and specificity of the group 1 or 2 mutations reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) mutational catalogue were 73.0% and 98.9%, respectively. We further identified 18 novel pncA mutations that were significantly associated with phenotypically PZA-resistant. In addition to these mutations, we identified 102 large deletions in the pncA gene, and all but two isolates were phenotypically resistant to PZA isolates. Notably, pncA deletions were mutually exclusive to pncA mutations, and more than half of the isolates with pncA large deletions belonged to the East Asian lineage (67.6%). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of the pooled variants (group 1 or 2 mutations, novel resistance-associated mutations, and large deletions of the pncA gene) were 79.0%, 98.9%, 97.0%, and 91.3%, respectively. The area under the curve (AUC) value for the pooled variants was significantly higher than the AUC value for the group 1 or 2 mutations (P <0.001), indicating that the pooled variants have a better discriminative ability for predicting PZA resistance. CONCLUSION Using WGS, we found that the pncA mutations are scattered without specific mutational hotspots, and large deletions associated with PZA resistance are more common in the East Asian lineage of M. tuberculosis isolates. Our data also demonstrated the reliability of group 1 or 2 mutations presented in the WHO mutation catalogue and the need for further investigation on group 3 mutations, contributing to the evaluation of the current knowledge base on mutations associated with the PZA-resistant M. tuberculosis complex.

Abstract
Background and aims Transarterial radioembolization (TARE) has shown promising results in treating advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT). However, whether TARE can provide superior or comparable outcomes to tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) in patients with HCC and PVTT remains unclear. We compared the outcomes of TARE and TKI therapy in treatment-naïve patients with locally advanced HCC and segmental or lobar PVTT. Methods This multicenter study included 216 patients initially treated with TARE (n=124) or TKI (sorafenib or lenvatinib; n=92) between 2011 and 2021. Baseline characteristics were balanced using propensity score matching (PSM) or inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW). The primary outcome was overall survival (OS). The secondary outcomes included progression-free survival (PFS) and objective response rate (ORR). Results In the unmatched cohort, the median OS of the TARE and TKI groups were 28.2 and 7.2 months, respectively (P<0.001), and the TARE group experienced significantly and independently longer OS compared to the TKI group (adjusted hazard ratio=0.41, 95% confidence interval=0.28-0.60, P<0.001). Similar results were observed in the study cohorts balanced with IPTW (P=0.003) or PSM (P=0.004). Although PFS was comparable between the two groups, the TARE group showed a trend of prolonged PFS in a subpopulation of patients with Vp1 or Vp2 PVTT (P=0.052). In the matched cohorts, the ORR of the TARE group was 53.0-56.7%, whereas that of the TKI group was 12.3-15.0%. Conclusion For patients with advanced HCC with segmental or lobar PVTT and well-preserved liver function, TARE may provide superior OS compared to sorafenib or lenvatinib.

Abstract
Electrospinning has shown great potential for the fabrication of 3D nanofibrous tubular scaffolds for bifurcated vascular grafts. However, fabrication of complex 3D nanofibrous tubular scaffolds with bifurcated or patient-specific shapes remains limited. In this study, a 3D hollow nanofibrous bifurcated-tubular scaffold was fabricated by the uniform and conformal deposition of electrospun nanofibers via conformal electrospinning. By conformal electrospinning, electrospun nanofibers are conformally deposited onto a complex shape, such as the bifurcated region, without large pores or defects. Owing to conformal electrospinning, a corner profile fidelity (FC), a measure of conformal deposition of electrospun nanofibers at the bifurcated region, was increased 4 times at the bifurcation angle (θB) of 60°, and all FC values of the scaffolds reached 100%, regardless of the θB. Furthermore, the thickness of the scaffolds could be controlled by varying the electrospinning time. Leakage-free liquid transfer was successfully achieved owing to the uniform and conformal deposition of electrospun nanofibers. Finally, the cytocompatibility and 3D mesh-based modeling of the scaffolds were demonstrated. Thus, conformal electrospinning can be used to fabricate leakage-free and complex 3D nanofibrous scaffolds for bifurcated vascular grafts.

Abstract
We study B^{+}→π^{+}π^{0}π^{0} using 711 fb^{-1} of data collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. We measure an inclusive branching fraction of (19.0±1.5±1.4)×10^{-6} and an inclusive CP asymmetry of (9.2±6.8±0.7)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic, and a B^{+}→ρ(770)^{+}π^{0} branching fraction of (11.2±1.1±0.9_{-1.6}^{+0.8})×10^{-6}, where the third uncertainty is due to possible interference with B^{+}→ρ(1450)^{+}π^{0}. We present the first observation of a structure around 1 GeV/c^{2} in the π^{0}π^{0} mass spectrum, with a significance of 6.4σ, and measure a branching fraction to be (6.9±0.9±0.6)×10^{-6}. We also report a measurement of local CP asymmetry in this structure.

Abstract
We search for lepton-flavor-violating τ^{-}→e^{-}α and τ^{-}→μ^{-}α decays, where α is an invisible spin-0 boson. The search uses electron-positron collisions at 10.58 GeV center-of-mass energy with an integrated luminosity of 62.8 fb^{-1}, produced by the SuperKEKB collider and collected with the Belle II detector. We search for an excess in the lepton-energy spectrum of the known τ^{-}→e^{-}ν[over ¯]_{e}ν_{τ} and τ^{-}→μ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ}ν_{τ} decays. We report 95% confidence-level upper limits on the branching-fraction ratio B(τ^{-}→e^{-}α)/B(τ^{-}→e^{-}ν[over ¯]_{e}ν_{τ}) in the range (1.1-9.7)×10^{-3} and on B(τ^{-}→μ^{-}α)/B(τ^{-}→μ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ}ν_{τ}) in the range (0.7-12.2)×10^{-3} for α masses between 0 and 1.6 GeV/c^{2}. These results provide the most stringent bounds on invisible boson production from τ decays.

Abstract
Using the data sample of 980 fb^{-1} collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider, we present the results of an investigation of the Λπ^{+} and Λπ^{-} invariant mass distributions looking for substructure in the decay Λ_{c}^{+}→Λπ^{+}π^{+}π^{-}. We find a significant signal in each mass distribution. When interpreted as resonances, we find for the Λπ^{+} (Λπ^{-}) combination a mass of 1434.3±0.6(stat)±0.9(syst) MeV/c^{2} [1438.5±0.9(stat)±2.5(syst) MeV/c^{2}], an intrinsic width of 11.5±2.8(stat)±5.3(syst) MeV/c^{2} [33.0±7.5(stat)±23.6(syst) MeV/c^{2}] with a significance of 7.5σ (6.2σ). As these two signals are very close to the K[over ¯]N threshold, we also investigate the possibility of a K[over ¯]N cusp, and find that we cannot discriminate between these two interpretations due to the limited size of the data sample.

Choi EK, Baek J, Kim DY. Effect of dexmedetomidine and remifentanil infusion on postoperative sore throat after lumbar spine surgery in the prone position. Medicine (Baltimore) 2023; 102:e33506. Abstract
BACKGROUND A sore throat is an adverse postoperative consequence of tracheal intubation under general anesthesia. Recently, dexmedetomidine, an anesthetic adjuvant, has shown beneficial effects in postoperative sore throat (POST). Herein, we compared the effects of dexmedetomidine and remifentanil on POST after spinal surgery in the prone position, which is a risk factor for developing POST. METHODS Ninety-eight patients were enrolled in the dexmedetomidine and remifentanil groups. Each drug was continuously infused using the following protocol: 1 μg/kg over 10 minutes followed by 0.2 to 0.8 μg/kg/h of dexmedetomidine, 3 to 4 ng/mL during induction followed by 1 to 3 ng/mL of remifentanil intraoperatively. The incidence and severity of POST were assessed serially at 24 hours postoperatively. Postoperative hoarseness, nausea, and pain scores were measured. RESULTS The incidence and severity of POST were significantly lower in the dexmedetomidine group than that in the remifentanil group. However, the incidence of hoarseness was comparable between the 2 groups. Postoperative nausea was lower in the dexmedetomidine group at 1 hour postoperatively; however, the postoperative pain score and analgesic requirements did not differ significantly. CONCLUSIONS Dexmedetomidine infusion as an adjuvant during sevoflurane anesthesia significantly reduced the incidence and severity of POST in patients who underwent lumbar surgery 24 hours postoperatively.

Abstract
Concerns about antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative pathogens are escalating, and accordingly siderophore-based intracellular antibiotic delivery is attracting more attention as an effective means to overcome these infections. Despite the successful clinical translation of this strategy, the delivery potential of siderophores has been limited to periplasm targeting, and this has appreciably restricted the repertoire of applicable antibiotics. To overcome this shortcoming of the current technology, this study focused on investigating the capability of simple bidentate catechol analogs to function as vehicles for cytoplasmic antibiotic delivery. Specifically, by employing trimethoprim, an inhibitor of dihydrofolate reductase located in the cytoplasm, as a model antibiotic, a chemical library of chelator-antibiotic conjugates featuring four different catechol analogs was prepared. Then, their various pharmacological properties and antimicrobial activities were evaluated. Analysis of these characterization data led to the identification of the active conjugates exhibiting notable iron- and trimethoprim-dependent potency against Escherichia coli. Further characterization of these hit molecules using E. coli mutant strains revealed that 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate could effectively deliver several corresponding conjugates to the cytoplasm by exploiting the siderophore uptake machineries present across the outer and inner membranes, originally designated for the native siderophore of E. coli, enterobactin. Considering the synthetic simplicity, such a catechol analog could have appreciable usage in potentiating cytoplasm-active antibiotics against recalcitrant Gram-negative pathogens.

Abstract
We study the processes e^{+}e^{-}→ωχ_{bJ}(1P) (J=0, 1, or 2) using samples at center-of-mass energies sqrt[s]=10.701, 10.745, and 10.805 GeV, corresponding to 1.6, 9.8, and 4.7 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity, respectively. These data were collected with the Belle II detector during special operations of the SuperKEKB collider above the ϒ(4S) resonance. We report the first observation of ωχ_{bJ}(1P) signals at sqrt[s]=10.745 GeV. By combining Belle II data with Belle results at sqrt[s]=10.867 GeV, we find energy dependencies of the Born cross sections for e^{+}e^{-}→ωχ_{b1,b2}(1P) to be consistent with the shape of the ϒ(10753) state. These data indicate that the internal structures of the ϒ(10753) and ϒ(10860) states may differ. Including data at sqrt[s]=10.653 GeV, we also search for the bottomonium equivalent of the X(3872) state decaying into ωϒ(1S). No significant signal is observed for masses between 10.45 and 10.65 GeV/c^{2}.

Metabolic dysfunction associated fatty liver disease identifies subjects with cardiovascular risk better than non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Liver Int 2023; 43:608-625. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the main cause of mortality in subjects with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We investigated the association between CVD risk and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) or NAFLD and the influence of significant liver fibrosis on the CVD risk. METHODS Subjects who underwent a comprehensive medical check-up were recruited (2014-2019). Significant liver fibrosis was defined using NAFLD fibrosis score, fibrosis-4 index, aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index, or FibroScan-aspartate aminotransferase score. High probability of atherosclerotic CVD (ASCVD) was defined as ASCVD risk score > 10%. RESULTS Of the study population (n = 78 762), 27 047 (34.3%) and 24 036 (30.5%) subjects had MAFLD and NAFLD respectively. A total of 1084 (4.0%) or 921 (3.8%) subjects had previous CVD history in MAFLD or NAFLD subgroup respectively. The previous CVD history and high probability of ASCVD were significantly higher in MAFLD or NAFLD subgroup with significant liver fibrosis than in the other groups (all p < .001). In multivariable analysis, MAFLD was independently associated with previous CVD history after adjusting for confounders (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.10, p = .038), whereas NAFLD was not (all p > .05). MAFLD (aOR = 1.40) or NAFLD (aOR = 1.22) was independently associated with high probability of ASCVD after full adjustment respectively (all p < .001). Significant liver fibrosis was independently associated with previous CVD history and high probability of ASCVD after adjustment in MAFLD or NAFLD subgroup respectively (all p < .05). CONCLUSION MAFLD might better identify subjects with CVD risk than NAFLD. Fibrosis assessment might be helpful for detailed prognostication in subjects with MAFLD.

Predictive role of absolute lymphocyte count in daratumumab-treated patients with relapsed/ refractory multiple myeloma. Korean J Intern Med 2023; 38:238-247. Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Daratumumab has shown an encouraging antitumor effect in patients with multiple myeloma (MM), and was known to alter the immune properties by off-targeting immunosuppressive cells. Here, we aimed to evaluate the change in absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) as a surrogate marker for predicting survival outcomes of patients treated with daratumumab. METHODS Between 2018 and 2021, the medical records of patients with relapsed/refractory MM (RRMM) treated with daratumumab monotherapy at 10 centers in South Korea were reviewed. We collected the ALC data at pre-infusion (D0), day 2 after the first infusion (D2), and prior to the third cycle of daratumumab therapy (D56). RESULTS Fifty patients who were administered at least two cycles of daratumumab were included. Overall response rate was 54.0% after two cycles of daratumumab treatment. On D2, almost all patients experienced a marked reduction in ALC. However, an increase in ALC on D56 (ALCD56) was observed in patients with non-progressive disease, whereas failure of ALC recovery was noted in those with progressive disease. Patients with ALCD56 > 700/μL (n = 39, 78.0%) had prolonged progression- free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) than those with ALCD56 ≤ 700/μL (median PFS: 5.8 months vs. 2.6 months, p = 0.025; median OS: 24.1 months vs. 6.1 months, p = 0.004). In addition, ALCD56 >700/μL was a significant favorable prognostic factor for PFS (hazard ratio [HR], 0.22; p = 0.003) and OS (HR, 0.23; p = 0.012). CONCLUSION Increase in ALC during daratumumab treatment was significantly associated with prolonged survival outcomes in patients with RRMM. The ALC value can predict clinical outcomes in patients treated with daratumumab.

Abstract
An absolute measurement of the Λ_{c}^{+} lifetime is reported using Λ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+} decays in events reconstructed from data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The total integrated luminosity of the data sample, which was collected at center-of-mass energies at or near the ϒ(4S) resonance, is 207.2 fb^{-1}. The result, τ(Λ_{c}^{+})=203.20±0.89±0.77 fs, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, is the most precise measurement to date and is consistent with previous determinations.

Abstract
The dark photon A^{'} and the dark Higgs boson h^{'} are hypothetical particles predicted in many dark sector models. We search for the simultaneous production of A^{'} and h^{'} in the dark Higgsstrahlung process e^{+}e^{-}→A^{'}h^{'} with A^{'}→μ^{+}μ^{-} and h^{'} invisible in electron-positron collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV in data collected by the Belle II experiment in 2019. With an integrated luminosity of 8.34 fb^{-1}, we observe no evidence for signal. We obtain exclusion limits at 90% Bayesian credibility in the range of 1.7-5.0 fb on the cross section and in the range of 1.7×10^{-8}-200×10^{-8} on the effective coupling ϵ^{2}×α_{D} for the A^{'} mass in the range of 4.0 GeV/c^{2}<M_{A^{'}}<9.7 GeV/c^{2} and for the h^{'} mass M_{h^{'}}<M_{A^{'}}, where ϵ is the mixing strength between the standard model and the dark photon and α_{D} is the coupling of the dark photon to the dark Higgs boson. Our limits are the first in this mass range.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of the present study was to evaluate the per-lesion sensitivity and specificity of the Korean Liver Cancer Association-National Cancer Center (KLCA-NCC) 2022 criteria for the noninvasive diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), with intraindividual comparison of the diagnostic performance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with extracellular agents (ECA-MRI) and hepatobiliary agents (HBA-MRI). Materials and Methods Patients at high risk for HCC who were referred to a tertiary academic institution for hepatic lesions with size≥10-mm between July 2019 and June 2022 were enrolled. A total of 91 patients (mean age, 58.1 years; 76 men and 15 women) with 118 lesions who underwent both ECA-MRI and HBA-MRI were eligible for final analysis. The per-lesion sensitivities and specificities of the KLCA-NCC 2022 criteria using ECA-MRI and HBA-MRI were compared using McNemar's test. Results The 119 lesions were 93 HCCs, 4 non-HCC malignancies, and 21 benign lesions. On HBA-MRI, the "definite" HCC category showed significantly higher sensitivity than ECA-MRI (78.5% vs. 58.1%, p<0.001), with identical specificity (92.0% vs. 92.0%, p>0.999). For "probable" or "definite" HCC categories, there were no differences in the sensitivity (84.9% vs. 84.9%, p>0.999) and specificity (84.0% vs. 84.0%, p>0.999) between ECA-MRI and HBA-MRI. Conclusion The "definite" HCC category of the KLCA-NCC 2022 criteria showed higher sensitivity in diagnosing HCC on HBA-MRI compared with ECA-MRI, without compromising specificity. There were no significant differences in the sensitivity and specificity of "probable" or "definite" HCC categories according to ECA-MRI and HBA-MRI.

Abstract
532 Background: Trans-arterial radioembolization (TARE) is a form of radiation therapy performed by selective intra-arterial injection of microspheres loaded with Yttrium-90 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The aim of this study is to identify prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) and progression free survival (PFS) in patients with HCC undergoing TARE. Methods: This is a multi-center retrospective study on consecutive HCC patients undergoing TARE from Jul 2009 to May 2019. Using pre-treatment plain computed tomography imaging, the total cross-sectional area (cm2) of abdominal skeletal muscle at the third lumbar vertebra was measured. The skeletal muscle index (SMI) was calculated by normalizing muscle area to patient height. Results: A total of 347 patients were included in the study (mean age 66 years, 284 male patients). 107 patients (30.8%) had portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT). 126 patients (36.3%) were classified as sarcopenia. Median 5-year OS was 31.3 months (95% CI 24.7–37.9) and median 12-month PFS was 9.7 months (95% CI 8.0–11.4). Sarcopenia (HR, 1.44; 95% CI, 1.01-2.04, p=0.04), PVTT (HR, 1.70; 95% CI, 1.13-2.56, p=0.01), hypoalbuminemia (≤3.5 g/dL) (HR 1.64; 95% CI 1.17-2.30, p<0.01), and prior treatment experience (HR 1.61; 95% CI 1.00-2.57, p=005) were independently associated with poor 5-year OS by multivariate Cox regression analysis. Sarcopenia, PVTT, multifocal tumor, and prior treatment experience were independent predictors of PFS in multivariate analysis. Conclusions: TARE is an effective therapy for patients with advanced HCC. In patients undergoing TARE, Sarcopenia and PVTT are independent predictors of both OS and PFS.

Abstract
518 Background: Final results from the real-world REFINE study confirmed the safety and effectiveness of regorafenib (REG) in a broad population of patients (pts) with uHCC that was consistent with the results from RESORCE, in which REG prolonged overall survival (OS) vs placebo in pts with uHCC who progressed on prior sorafenib. Here we evaluate baseline characteristics and outcomes according to the initial REG dose. Methods: REFINE (NCT03289273), an international, prospective, multicenter study, enrolled pts with uHCC for whom a decision to treat with REG was made by the treating physician prior to enrollment according to the local health authority approved label (160 mg/day, 3 weeks on/1 week off). The primary objective was safety (NCI-CTCAE v4.03); secondary endpoints included OS and progression-free survival (PFS). Results: Of 1005 pts eligible for analysis, 47%, 11%, 40%, and 3% initiated REG at 160 mg, 120 mg, 80 mg, and 40 mg, respectively. A higher proportion of pts from Asia initiated REG at 160 mg (51%) vs non-Asian countries (42%), and 67% were Child–Pugh A in Asia vs 54% in non-Asian countries at study entry. Pts initiating REG at 160 mg were more likely to be Child–Pugh A and albumin–bilirubin (ALBI) grade 1 vs pts initiating REG at <160 mg (Table). A higher proportion of pts (53%) who initiated REG at 160 mg ended prior sorafenib at 800 mg/day. Of the pts intolerant to prior sorafenib (n=91), more pts started REG at 80 mg (49%), followed by 160 mg (32%) and 120 mg (9%). Median duration of REG treatment was similar across initial dose levels (overall 3.7 months). Any-grade TEAEs were reported for 90%, 93%, and 93% of pts initiating REG at 160 mg, 120 mg, and 80 mg, respectively. TEAEs led to dose modifications in 49%, 51%, and 38% and to dose reductions in 34%, 26%, and 17% of pts. Median OS was 15.8 months in pts who initiated REG at 160 mg, 13.3 months at 120 mg, and 11.1 months at 80 mg. Median PFS was similar across doses (overall 3.9 months). Conclusions: In this real-world study, most pts with uHCC initiated REG at 160 mg or 80 mg/day. A higher proportion of pts from Asia initiated REG at the recommended dose, and a higher proportion of pts initiating REG at 160 mg had relatively better liver function at study entry. Safety was generally similar regardless of initial dose, and OS was observed to be longer in pts initiating REG at 160 mg vs lower doses. Clinical trial information: NCT03289273 . [Table: see text]

The clinical effect of antiviral therapy in patients with hepatitis B virus-related decompensated cirrhosis and undetectable DNA. J Gastroenterol Hepatol 2023; 38:716-723. [PMID: 36681856 DOI: 10.1111/jgh.16132] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/19/2022] [Revised: 12/30/2022] [Accepted: 01/18/2023] [Indexed: 01/23/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Antiviral therapy (AVT) is the mainstay of hepatitis B virus (HBV) management. We investigated whether AVT improves the outcomes of HBV-related decompensated cirrhosis and undetectable HBV-DNA. METHODS Between 2000 and 2017, treatment-naïve patients with HBV-related decompensated cirrhosis and undetectable HBV-DNA were recruited from two tertiary hospitals. The endpoints included death and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). RESULTS A total of 429 patients were analyzed (50 and 379 patients in the AVT and non-AVT groups, respectively). Patients in the AVT group were significantly younger and had higher alanine aminotransferase and alpha-fetoprotein levels than those in the non-AVT group (all P < 0.05). During follow-up (median 49.6 months), 98 patients died and 105 developed HCC. The cumulative incidence rates of death (2.0%, 4.1%, and 6.4%, and 4.9%, 7.2%, and 10.2% at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years, respectively) and HCC (8.6%, 15.8%, and 26.4% vs 1.6%, 7.7%, and 24.4% at 1, 2, and 5 years, respectively) were statistically comparable between the AVT and non-AVT groups (all P > 0.05). Using Cox regression analysis, AVT was not significantly associated with death nor HCC (all P > 0.05). Similar results were observed after balancing baseline characteristics with inverse probability of treatment weighting. In the non-AVT group, the cumulative incidence rates of HBV-DNA detection at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years were 2.0%, 3.1%, and 6.4%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Antiviral therapy did not attenuate the risk of death nor HCC in patients with HBV-related decompensated cirrhosis and undetectable HBV-DNA.

Abstract
We present the study of B[over ¯]^{0}→Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++}π^{±}p[over ¯] decays based on 772×10^{6} BB[over ¯] events collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. The Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++} candidates are reconstructed via their decay to Λ_{c}^{+}π^{∓} and Λ_{c}^{+} decays to pK^{-}π^{+}, pK_{S}^{0}, and Λπ^{+} final states. The corresponding branching fractions are measured to be B(B[over ¯]^{0}→Σ_{c}(2455)^{0}π^{+}p[over ¯])=(1.09±0.06±0.07)×10^{-4} and B(B[over ¯]^{0}→Σ_{c}(2455)^{++}π^{-}p[over ¯])=(1.84±0.11±0.12)×10^{-4}, which are consistent with the world average values with improved precision. A new structure is found in the M_{Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++}π^{±}} spectrum with a significance of 4.2σ including systematic uncertainty. The structure is possibly an excited Λ_{c}^{+} and is tentatively named Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}. Its mass and width are measured to be (2913.8±5.6±3.8) MeV/c^{2} and (51.8±20.0±18.8) MeV, respectively. The products of branching fractions for the Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} are measured to be B(B[over ¯]^{0}→Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}p[over ¯])×B(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}→Σ_{c}(2455)^{0}π^{+})=(9.5±3.6±1.6)×10^{-6} and B(B[over ¯]^{0}→Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}p[over ¯])×B(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}→Σ_{c}(2455)^{++}π^{-})=(1.24±0.35±0.10)×10^{-5}. Here, the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Abstract
Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is a versatile thermoplastic with superior biodegradability and biocompatibility that is intracellularly accumulated by numerous bacterial and archaeal species. Priestia sp. strain JY310 that was able to efficiently biotransform reducing sugars in d-xylose-rich rice husk hydrolysate (reducing sugarRHH) to PHB was isolated from the soil of a rice paddy. Reducing sugarRHH including 12.5% d-glucose, 75.3% d-xylose, and 12.2% d-arabinose was simply prepared using thermochemical hydrolysis of 3% H2SO4-treated rice husk for 15 min at 121 °C. When cultured with 20 g/L reducing sugarRHH under optimized culture conditions in a batch bioreactor, Priestia sp. strain JY310 could produce PHB homopolymer up to 50.4% of cell dry weight (6.2 g/L). The melting temperature, heat of fusion, and thermal decomposition temperature of PHB were determined to be 167.9 °C, 92.1 J/g, and 268.1 °C, respectively. The number average and weight average molecular weights of PHB with a broad polydispersity index value (4.73) were estimated to be approximately 16.2 and 76.8 kg/mol, respectively. The findings of the present study suggest that Priestia sp. strain JY310 can be exploited as a good candidate for the low-cost production of low molecular weight PHB with improved biodegradability and reduced brittleness from inexpensive agricultural waste hydrolysates.

Abstract
Microbial fuel cells (CS-UFC) utilize waste resources containing biodegradable materials that play an essential role in green energy. MFC technology generates "carbon-neutral" bioelectricity and involves a multidisciplinary approach to microbiology. MFCs will play an important role in the harvesting of "green electricity." In this study, a single-chamber urea fuel cell is fabricated that uses these different wastewaters as fuel to generate power. Soil has been used to generate electrical power in microbial fuel cells and exhibited several potential applications to optimize the device; the urea fuel concentration is varied from 0.1 to 0.5 g/mL in a single-chamber compost soil urea fuel cell (CS-UFC). The proposed CS-UFC has a high power density and is suitable for cleaning chemical waste, such as urea, as it generates power by consuming urea-rich waste as fuel. The CS-UFC generates 12 times higher power than conventional fuel cells and exhibits size-dependent behavior. The power generation increases with a shift from the coin cell toward the bulk size. The power density of the CS-UFC is 55.26 mW/m2. This result confirmed that urea fuel significantly affects the power generation of single-chamber CS-UFC. This study aimed to reveal the effect of soil properties on the generated electric power from soil processes using waste, such as urea, urine, and industrial-rich wastewater as fuel. The proposed system is suitable for cleaning chemical waste; moreover, the proposed CS-UFC is a novel, sustainable, cheap, and eco-friendly design system for soil-based bulk-type design for large-scale urea fuel cell applications.
