Abstract
The purposes of the present study were to investigate sequential changes in plasma von Willebrand factor (vWf) activities and serum soluble thrombomodulin (sTM) concentrations, compared with white blood cell (WBC) counts, and to disclose the different roles of vWf and sTM in acute ischemic stroke. Forty-three acute ischemic stroke patients admitted to our hospital within 48 hours from onset were enrolled. Plasma vWf activities, serum sTM concentrations, and WBC counts were measured at the acute stage and 1 and 6 months after admission. The time course study revealed that vWf activities increased more markedly 1 month after admission than at the acute stage. However, sTM concentrations were low at the acute stage and increased sequentially at 1 month (not significantly) and 6 months (significantly) after admission. In contrast, elevated WBC counts at the acute stage decreased significantly at 1 and 6 months after admission. Raised vWf activities 1 month after admission were suggested to occur through continuous endothelial dysfunction or repair and platelet activation, compared with the acute stage, and decreased sTM at the acute stage through down-regulation of sTM synthesis by acute inflammatory response after acute ischemic stroke, compared with the chronic stage.

Abstract
The steroidogenic acute regulatory (StAR) protein is a rate-limiting factor in steroid hormone production. The StAR protein plays a role in the movement of cholesterol from the outer membrane to the inner membrane, where cholesterol side chain cleavage enzyme exists. Dioxins, which may act as 'endocrine disruptors', mimic and antagonize endogenous hormone actions in vivo. Although the mechanism of endocrine disruption is not clear, the actions of dioxins are known to be mediated by binding to the arylhydrocarbon receptor (AhR), and it is known that dioxins act as transcription factors to endocrine-associated gene expression. In the present study, we examined the effect of the AhR on the human StAR gene promoter, and we clarified the action mechanisms of environmental endocrine disruptors. We transfected constructs containing the human StAR gene promoter sequences pGL(2) 1.3-kb StAR (nt -1293 to +39) into mouse Y-1 adrenal tumor cells and measured the promoter activity of the StAR gene. With the addition of beta-napthoflavone (betaNF), which is a ligand of AhR, to the culture medium, the activity of the StAR gene promoter increased significantly (P<0.05), and with the addition of 1 microM of betaNF, it became maximum (3.1+/-0.6-fold higher than the control value). When the AhR and ARNT were co-transfected together in Y-1 cells or human adrenocortical carcinoma H295R cells, the promoter activity of the StAR gene significantly (P<0.05) increased, to a level 1.4+/-0.01-fold higher in Y-1 cells and to a level 1.6+/-0.04-fold higher in H295R cells than the control level, when 1 microM of betaNF was added. We examined the effect of induction of cAMP with transfection with AhR or ARNT. With the addition of 1 mM 8-Br-cAMP, there were no differences between the StAR gene promoter activities in the group in which AhR and ARNT was introduced and in the group in which they were not introduced. The results suggest that AhR plays a role in the promoter activity of the human StAR gene and that the effect of AhR on StAR gene expression may cause a disturbance to the human endocrine system.

Abstract
Behçet's disease (BD) is known to be associated with human leukocyte antigen (HLA) B51 in many different ethnic groups. An increased incidence of HLA-B51 in the patient group has also been reported in a Japanese population. Recently, the B51 antigen has been identified to comprise 21 alleles, B*5101-B*5121. Further, not only HLA-B*5101 but also HLA-B*5108 were found to be relatively increased in the patient groups among Italian and Saudi Arabian populations. Therefore, we performed HLA-B*51 allele genotyping by the polymerase chain reaction-sequencing based typing (PCR-SBT) method in order to investigate whether there is any correlation of one particular B51-associated allele with Japanese BD. Ninety-six Japanese patients with BD and 132 healthy Japanese volunteers were enrolled in this study. As a result, the phenotype frequency of the B51 antigen was confirmed to be remarkably increased in the patient group as compared to the ethnically matched control group (59.4% in patients vs. 13.6% in controls; Pc=0.0000000000098, R.R.=9.3). In the B*51 allele genotyping, 56 out of 57 B51-positive patients were defined as B*5101 and the remaining one was B*5102. In contrast, all of 18 B51-positive normal controls were B*5101. None of the Japanese patients and healthy controls carried the HLA-B*5108 allele. This study revealed that B*51 allelic distribution in Japanese was different from those in Italian and Saudi Arabian populations, and that the significantly high incidence of the HLA-B51 antigen in the Japanese BD patient group was mostly caused by the significant increase of the HLA-B*5101 allele.

Abstract
Coregulators have been suggested to act as a bridging apparatus between nuclear receptors and the transcriptional machinery. The orphan receptor SF-1 plays a role in controlling the basal and cAMP-stimulated expression of the human steroidogenic acute regulatory protein gene. DAX-1 is the gene responsible for X-linked adrenal hypoplasia congenita and blocks steroid biosynthesis by impairing the expression of steroidogenic acute regulatory protein. In the present study we examined the role of coregulators in the actions of SF-1 and DAX-1 on the human steroidogenic acute regulatory protein promoter. We found that the coregulator RIP 140 interacts with SF-1 in the yeast two-hybrid system. Glutathione-S-transferase pull-down assays and coimmunoprecipitations confirmed the interaction between RIP 140 and SF-1. RIP 140 was also shown to interact with DAX-1. When an RIP 140 expression vector was introduced into Y-1 cells, basal and cAMP-stimulated human steroidogenic acute regulatory protein promoter activities decreased. The inhibitory effect of RIP 140 on human steroidogenic acute regulatory protein promoter activity was dependent upon the presence of SF-1. The cAMP response of an SF-1 response element was inhibited by both RIP 140 and DAX-1 expression vectors at low concentrations of plasmids. We conclude that RIP 140 binds to the orphan nuclear receptor SF-1 and DAX-1 and modulates their actions on the human steroidogenic acute regulatory protein promoter.

Abstract
The inhibitory influence of ferulic acid (FA), a rice germ component, and its geranylated derivative 3-(4'-geranyloxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-propenoate (EGMP) on the post-initiation stage of azoxymethane (AOM)-induced colon carcinogenesis was studied in male F344 rats given two s.c. injections of AOM (15 mg / kg body weight) during week 1. Diets containing EGMP or FA at doses of 0.1 or 0.2% were then fed for 3 weeks from week 2 to 5, when the animals were sacrificed. The numbers of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and aberrant crypts (AC) per rat in the group given 0.2% FA were significantly decreased (P < 0.001) as compared to the AOM alone group. Furthermore, the numbers of ACF and AC per rat fed the 0.2% and 0.1% EGMP were significantly reduced (P < 0.001 and P < 0.01, respectively). Colonic epithelial cells in S-phase, as measured by bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) labeling, in rats fed EGMP were significantly decreased in the 0.2 and 0.1% EGMP groups as compared to the AOM alone group (P < 0.05). BrdU labeling indices in rats fed FA and EGMP assessed by a test using a coefficient for linear contrast were also significantly decreased as compared to the AOM alone value (P < 0.05, P < 0.01, respectively). The results indicate that FA and EGMP have inhibitory effects on ACF and AC development, EGMP being more potent, possibly due to stronger suppressive effects on cell proliferation. No toxic effects were observed in rats given either compound in terms of body and organ weights, and liver or kidney histology. The findings thus suggest that EGMP and FA, especially the former, might have potential as chemopreventive agents against colon tumor development.

Abstract
We report the case of a 72-year-old male with Stage IV gastric cancer accompanied by multiple liver metastases and carcinomatous ascites which responded to chemotherapy using TS-1. Treatment of the patient with daily oral administration of 120 mg TS-1 for 4 weeks resulted in complete regression of the liver metastases and ascites, as well as a 35% reduction in the size of the primary lesion. After 2 cycles, the primary tumor size was reduced to 55% and serum CA19-9 and CA125 levels were decreased to the normal ranges. This regimen was effective without any adverse effects, and improved the patient's QOL, for 6 months before progression of liver lesions. The patient received chemotherapy at our outpatient clinic for 10 months after the first treatment, after which he died of peritonitis carcinomatosa. The current case suggests that TS-1 may have a potent therapeutic efficacy in advanced gastric cancer patients.

Abstract
Sentinel node was detected by 99mTc labeled nanocolloid in five patients with breast cancer. Surgery of breast cancer was done at 16 hours after the administration of 74 MBq of 99mTc labeled nanocolloid. Sentinel node was searched by scintigraphy prior to surgery and by gamma-probe during surgery. Radioactivity of injected site, sentinel nodes, blood contaminated gauze, and other garbage was measured by GM detector. Radiation to medical staffs was monitored by a pocket radiation detector and film batches. Sentinel nodes were successfully detected both by scintigraphy and gamma-detector. More than 70% of radioactivity remained in the administered site at 16 hours. Small amount of radioactivity was detectable in the sentinel node. Almost no radioactivity was detectable in blood-contaminated gauze and other garbage. Radiation dose to the main surgeon was 4 to 6 microSv per surgery by a pocket radiation detector. Radiation dose to the assistant surgeon was 2 microSv per surgery. Radiation dose by labeling or injection was 0 to 1 microSv per procedure. No detectable radiation was measured by film batches. It is concluded that the detection of sentinel node by 99mTc labeled nanocolloid is a safe procedure from the point of radiation safety consideration.

Abstract
A prospective study on medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction for recurrent patellar dislocation was performed. At an average follow-up of 5.9 years, 27 MPFL reconstructions using a mesh-type artificial ligament and medial retinaculum slip coverage were reviewed using the Crosby and Insall grading system. Fifteen knees (55%) were classified as excellent, 11 knees (41%) as good, 1 knee (4%) as fair/poor and none as worse. At a mid-term follow-up, medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction should be considered as a safe and effective operation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Complications associated with intraperitoneal (ip) chemotherapy is one of the factors that should be taken into consideration upon performing long-term intraperitoneal administration of chemotherapeutic agents for ovarian carcinoma. METHODS From 1987 to 1996, 78 patients with primary ovarian carcinoma were treated with a total of 365 courses of ip administration of cisplatin (CDDP) or carboplatin (CBDCA) as a part of an initial chemotherapy regimen in combination with surgery including systematic retroperitoneal lymph node dissection using an implantable peritoneal cavity access catheter system. The complications that occurred in association with ip chemotherapy were analyzed. RESULTS Complications associated with ip chemotherapy were seen in 27 of 78 (34.6%) patients, which included extensive intestinal adhesion, abdominal pain, local infection, ileus, bleeding at the site of implanted port, obstruction of the catheter, vaginal vault perforation, and bowel perforation. Major complications that required surgical treatment occurred in 3 patients, which included ileus, vaginal perforation, and an intestinal perforation. The perforations occurred after 18 and 36 months after the implantation of the catheter, respectively. CONCLUSIONS It has been suggested that primary CDDP/CBDCA ip chemotherapy using an implantable catheter system can be carried out safely with rare major complications if employment of this method is restricted in 12 months after the installation of catheter.

Abstract
We investigated changes of the blood pressure in 29 stroke patients before stroke recurrence and after recurrence. Additional antihypertensive drugs were not administered to all patients after stroke recurrence. Twenty-five lacunar infarct patients and 4 atherothrombotic infarct patients were included in this study. A significant difference was observed between the systolic blood pressure(SBP) within 4 weeks before recurrence and that just after recurrence(132.8 +/- 17.2 mmHg vs. 157.4 +/- 21.3 mmHg, Wilcoxon rank sum test, p < 0.001), or between the SBP just after and 2 weeks after stroke recurrence(157.4 +/- 21.3 mmHg vs. 138.0 +/- 18.3 mmHg, Wilcoxon rank sum test, p < 0.001). The similar difference was found in the diastolic blood pressure(DBP) or in the mean arterial blood pressure(MABP). There was no significant difference in the SBP, the DBP or the MABP between the patients before and 2 weeks after the stroke recurrence. These results suggested that the elevation of the blood pressure at recurrence decreased spontaneously to the pre-recurrence level of the blood pressure in about 2 weeks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The occurrence of pelvic lymphocysts is an important complication following systematic lymphadenectomy for gynecological malignancies. We employed a procedure to prevent vaginal shortening following radical hysterectomy and we examined whether this procedure could be effective in preventing pelvic lymphocyst formation. METHODS We studied the incidence of lymphocysts in 190 patients with 84 cervical cancers, 74 endometrial cancers and 32 ovarian cancers, using computed tomographic examination at 3 and 6 months subsequent to the surgery. The surgery included radical hysterectomy and a procedure to prevent vaginal shortening (101), modified radical hysterectomy (79) and simple hysterectomy (7), with systematic lymphadenectomy. RESULTS There was a significant difference in the incidence of pelvic lymphocysts between cervical cancer (4.8%) and ovarian cancer (18.8%). The postoperative incidence of lymphocyst formation in patients undergoing radical hysterectomy with the procedure to prevent vaginal shortening (5.9%) was significantly lower than in those who underwent modified radical hysterectomy (15.2%). CONCLUSION Our procedure to prevent vaginal shortening could be effective in preventing not only the shortening of the vagina but also the occurrence of pelvic lymphocysts in patients undergoing radical hysterectomy with systematic lymphadenectomy for gynecological malignancies.

Abstract
A total of 23 ferulic acid (FA) derivatives were synthesized, and investigated for their inhibitory effects on 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate-induced Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) activation and superoxide (O(2)(-)) generation. Most of the derivatives showed significant EBV activation suppression or cytotoxicity at a concentration of 100 microM, with FA15 as the most potent suppressor. In both assays, FA6-FA17, bearing straight- or branched-alkyl side chains, exhibited marked suppression of O(2)(-) generation, with both FA16 and FA17 being highly active, while FA itself was virtually inactive. The activity differences seen between FA16/FA17 and FA are attributable, at least in part, to their cellular incorporating efficiencies. Further, both FA15 and FA21 attenuated the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 proteins, while FA did not. Our results suggest that these novel FA derivatives are effective chemopreventive agents.

Abstract
Ester compounds consisting of ferulic acid and myo-inositol, obtained from rice bran, were synthesized. The inhibitory effects of these feruloyl-myo-inositols on 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced superoxide (O2-) generation were examined using differentiated HL-60 cells. Among the derivatives tested, only 3,4,5,6-tetra-O-acetyl-1,2-di-O-[3-(4'-acetoxy-3'-methoxyphenyl)-2-pr openoyl]-myo-inositol (3) showed a distinct inhibitory activity.

Abstract
All stereoisomers of methyl jasmonate (MJA) were prepared, and their effects on cell yield and promotion of paclitaxel (Taxol) and baccatin III production investigated in cell suspension cultures of Taxus media. (3R,7S)-MJA showed the strongest cell growth inhibition, followed by (3R,7R)-MJA. In contrast, (3S,7R)- and (3S,7S)-MJA had very low inhibitory effects, indicating that this inhibition depends largely on the (3R)-configuration. In terms of the promotion of paclitaxel and baccatin III production, (3R,7R)-MJA had the highest activity. Although it showed considerable activity at low concentration, at higher concentrations the activity was decreased due to strong inhibition of cell growth. Interestingly, paclitaxel and baccatin III contents increased even at a high (3S,7R)-MJA concentration, whereas the other isomers had the opposite effects. These findings are interpreted to suggest that the optimum configuration is (3R,7R), the (3R)-configuration not being indispensable, and that the (7R)-configuration is suitable for the promotion of paclitaxel and baccatin III production.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To clarify the role of the calcium concentration in hepatocytes in liver ischaemia-reperfusion injury in relation to the protective effect of calcium-related agents. DESIGN Serial calcium concentrations of extramitochondrial cytosolic sites (EMCa) and in mitochondria (MCa) in hepatocytes of isolated perfused rat liver were measured by an electron probe X-ray microanalyser, and the effects of calcium-related agents were evaluated. METHODS Ischaemia was induced for 2 h, followed by 2 h of reperfusion in group I (without drug), group II (with diltiazem, 9.3 microM) and group III (with citrate, 5 mM). RESULTS In group I, EMCa increased rapidly after reperfusion (before ischaemia, 2.0 mmol/kg wet weight; 1 min after reperfusion, 4.4 mmol/kg), and MCa increased (before ischaemia, 2.6 mmol/kg; 1 min after reperfusion, 5.07 mmol/kg). Thereafter the levels decreased, but remained high at 120 min after reperfusion in group I (EMCa, 3.2 mmol/kg, MCa 4.1 mmol/kg). At 1 min after reperfusion, EMCa in group III (2.9 mmol/kg) and MCa in groups II (3.4 mmol/kg) and III (4.0 mmol/kg) were significantly lower than in group I. At 120 min after reperfusion, the EMCa and MCa in groups II (2.5 and 3.1 mmol/kg, respectively) and III (2.4 and 3.0 mmol/kg, respectively) remained at significantly lower levels. Mitochondrial function in groups II and III was better preserved than in group I. The levels of hepatic enzymes in the perfused fluid of group III were lower than in group I. CONCLUSIONS Calcium concentration in hepatocytes may play an important role in ischaemia-reperfusion injury. Diltiazem and citrate demonstrated a protective effect by maintaining a low calcium level in hepatocytes.

Abstract
PURPOSE Eyes with idiopathic epiretinal membranes (ERM) often have tortuous vessels and macular edema, suggesting that eyes with ERM may have a disturbance of the macular microcirculation. The authors studied perifoveal microcirculation in eyes with ERM by means of scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) fluorescein angiography. METHODS Mean capillary blood flow velocity (CFV) was measured by SLO fluorescein angiography in 19 eyes with ERM before and 6 months after vitreous surgery and in 19 healthy control eyes. RESULTS Mean CFV was significantly reduced in the eyes with ERM compared with the healthy control eyes (2.98 +/- 0.32 mm/sec versus 3.34 +/- 0.12 mm/sec, P < 0.05), and postoperative mean CFV was significantly increased compared with preoperative mean CFV (3.14 +/- 0.32 mm/sec versus 2.98 +/- 0.32 mm/sec, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Eyes with ERM show abnormal hemodynamics in the perifoveal capillaries. Surgical treatment of eyes with ERM results in improvement of the abnormal blood flow.

Abstract
A 66-year-old woman visited a local clinic due to general fatigue. After undergoing examinations at our hospital, the patient was diagnosed to have advanced gallbladder carcinoma with metastasis to the liver and cholecystolithiasis, After receiving a cholecystectomy, we performed chemotherapy by the intra-arterial infusion of low-dose cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil via hepatic artery, and observed its marked effect on the tumors by computed tomography. The level of carcinoembryonic antigen decreased from 114.5 ng/ml to 0.8 ng/mg, and carbohydrate antigen 125 decreased from 1 094 U/ml to 75 U/ml. The present result suggests that this therapy may be useful for some selected patients with an advanced gallbladder carcinoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Eyes with epiretinal membranes (ERMs) often have alterations of retinal vessels. The authors studied perifoveal microcirculation in eyes with epiretinal membranes (ERMs) using scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) fluorescein angiography. METHODS Mean capillary blood flow velocity (CFV) was measured as an index of perifoveal microcirculation by SLO fluorescein angiography in 26 eyes with ERMs (19 eyes with idiopathic epiretinal membranes, seven eyes with epiretinal membranes after retinal detachment surgery) before and 6 months after vitreous surgery, and in 23 healthy control subjects. RESULTS The mean CFV was significantly reduced in eyes with ERMs compared with healthy controls (p=0.012), and the postoperative mean CFV was significantly increased compared with the preoperative mean CFV (p=0.041). CONCLUSION Significant changes of capillary blood flow velocity in the perifoveal areas were observed between normal subjects and eyes with epiretinal membranes. This indicates that eyes with ERMs show abnormal haemodynamics in the perifoveal capillaries.

Abstract
The remnants of the medial patello-femoral ligament (MPFL) of 67 knees, 18 with acute patellar dislocation and 49 with chronic patellar dislocation, were studied. The MPFL injuries of the acute cases were categorised into 2 groups: an avulsion tear type and a substantial tear type. The chronic cases were put into 3 groups: those with loose femoral attachment (9 knees), those with scar tissue formation or abnormal scar branch formation (29 knees), and those with no evidence or continuity of the ligament (absent type) (11 knees). It is concluded that incompetence of the medial patello-femoral ligament is a major factor in the occurrence of recurrent patellar dislocation and/or an unstable patella following an acute patellar dislocation.

Abstract
The treatment strategies in patients with gastric cancer aged 80 years or older have not yet been well defined. We examined the incidence of postoperative complications and hospital mortality regarding the preoperative condition of such patients. A preoperative examination included evaluations of the cardiac, pulmonary, renal, and hepatic functions, the presence or absence of anemia, nutritional status, and blood sugar content. The incidence of postoperative complications and hospital mortality were then studied in relation to the number of preoperative abnormal parameters. The incidence of postoperative complications was 37.0%. The rate of hospital mortality was 11.1%. Among the patients with abnormalities in five or more items, the incidence of complications was 76.9% and the rate of hospital mortality was 23.1%. In the patients with an operative time of 4 h or longer, the same incidence was 71.4%. Among the patients who underwent a curative resection, the 5-year survival rate was 92.3%. For elderly gastric cancer patients with abnormalities in five or more items during a preoperative examination and for those showing a poor level of daily life activity, a less invasive treatment modality should be planned. Patients with abnormalities of four or fewer items at a preoperative examination appear to be good candidates for curative resection.

Abstract
Thirteen Saudi Arabian patients with Behçet's disease (BD) were typed for HLA-A and -B alleles by the conventional serologic typing and for HLA-DRB1, -DQB1 and -DPB1 alleles by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. As a result, the phenotype frequency of the B51 antigen was significantly increased in the patient group as compared to the ethnically matched control group (76.9% in patients vs. 22.20% in controls), but no significant difference was observed in HLA-A, -DRB1, -DQB1 or -DPB1 alleles between the patients and controls, as previously observed in Japanese BD. Further, by HLA-B51 allelic genotyping performed by the polymerase chain reaction-sequence specific primers (PCR-SSP) method, all of the B51-positive patients and controls were found to carry one particular allele, B*5101, except one patient with B*5108.

Abstract
We suggest that chemical raw materials can best be obtained from natural resources. Ferulic acid is easily prepared in large quantities from rice bran pitch, a blackish brown waste oil with high viscosity, discharged in the process of the rice bran oil production. As an application of ferulic acid, potential cancer chemopreventive agents could be synthesized using organic synthetic methods.

Abstract
The influence of ethyl 3-(4'-geranyloxy-3'-methoxyphenyl)-2-propenoate (EGMP) on the initiation and post-initiation stages of colon carcinogenesis was investigated in male F344 rats treated with azoxymethane (AOM). In experimental protocol 1, EGMP was given in the diet at 0.1 or 0.2% for 1 week together with two s.c. 15 mg/kg body weight injections of AOM on days 1 and 7 (initiation period). In protocol 2, the test compound was administered starting at week 3(post initiation stage), and in protocol 3, the test compound was given throughout the experimental period(whole stage). Sacrifice and quantitation of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) was performed at the end of week 5. Dose-dependent decreases in numbers of ACF were noted with both cases of post-initiation and whole period exposure (protocol 2 and 3), large size lesions considered most likely to be precursor lesions also being significantly reduced in the protocol 2(4-9 crypt size total with the 0.2% dose group, 48.9% and 59.6% of control values, respectively). No effects on body or liver weights were evident. The present results thus suggest that EGMP might find application as a chemopreventive agent against colon tumor development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic factors of advanced gastric carcinoma without serosal invasion (pT2 gastric carcinoma), for the planning of therapeutic strategy. METHODOLOGY Prognostic factors were evaluated by univariate and multivariate analysis in a total of 304 curatively resected pT2 gastric carcinoma patients in whom the tumor invaded the muscularis propria or the subserosa. RESULTS Macroscopic type, depth of invasion, lymph node metastasis and venous invasion were significantly related to outcome, using univariate analysis. Lesions resembling early gastric carcinoma had better prognosis than lesions belonging to one of the Borrmann types. Multivariate analysis (Cox's proportional hazards model) demonstrated that macroscopic type, lymph node metastasis and venous invasion, but not depth of invasion, were significant prognostic factors. CONCLUSIONS Macroscopic appearance, lymph node metastasis and venous invasion were the important prognostic factors of pT2 gastric carcinoma. Extensive lymph node dissection and aggressive post-operative chemotherapy should be performed, especially in Borrmann type lesions with lymph node metastasis.
