Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the present study was to assess quality of life before and after surgery for hemifacial spasm, in order to validate two specific quality of life scales translated in French. Surgical results and complications were reported. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-three patients with hemifacial spasm treated by microvascular decompression were retrospectively included. The HFS-8 and HFS-30 quality of life scales were translated from English into French using a forward-backward method and implemented on patients at least one year after surgery. RESULTS Median HFS-8 and HFS-30 values were respectively 16±12.5 (range: 8-20.5) and 38±38.5 (range: 23-61.5) before surgery and 0.5±4.5 (range: 0-4.5) and 5±17.5 (range: 1-18.5) after surgery, showing significant improvement in quality of life (P<0.001). The internal consistency of both scales was excellent (Cronbach's alpha>0.9), and they were significantly correlated (Pearson coefficient=0.95; 95% CI [0.91; 0.98]; P<0.0001). Success rates were 83% and 91%, respectively, after primary and revision surgeries. Complications were transient with minor consequences in 80% of cases, but could impact quality of life when lasting. CONCLUSIONS These results support the validity of the French versions of HFS-8 and HFS-30. Microvascular decompression is a safe and effective treatment for hemifacial spasm, and these scales are reliable tools to assess postoperative quality of life.

Abstract
We present a search for the direct production of a light pseudoscalar a decaying into two photons with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We search for the process e^{+}e^{-}→γa, a→γγ in the mass range 0.2<m_{a}<9.7 GeV/c^{2} using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of (445±3) pb^{-1}. Light pseudoscalars interacting predominantly with standard model gauge bosons (so-called axionlike particles or ALPs) are frequently postulated in extensions of the standard model. We find no evidence for ALPs and set 95% confidence level upper limits on the coupling strength g_{aγγ} of ALPs to photons at the level of 10^{-3} GeV^{-1}. The limits are the most restrictive to date for 0.2<m_{a}<1 GeV/c^{2}.

Abstract
The photophysics of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is intensively studied due to their potential application in light harvesting and optoelectronics. Excited states of SWCNTs form strongly bound electron-hole pairs, excitons, of which only singlet excitons participate in application relevant optical transitions. Long-living spin-triplet states hinder applications, but they emerge as candidates for quantum information storage. Therefore, knowledge of the triplet exciton energy structure, in particular in a SWCNT chirality dependent manner, is greatly desired. We report the observation of light emission from triplet state recombination, i.e., phosphorescence, for several SWCNT chiralities using a purpose-built spectrometer. This yields the singlet-triplet gap as a function of the SWCNT diameter, and it follows predictions based on quantum confinement effects. Saturation under high microwave power (up to 10 W) irradiation allows the spin-relaxation time for triplet states to be determined. Our study sensitively discriminates whether the lowest optically active state is populated from an excited state on the same nanotube or through Förster exciton energy transfer from a neighboring nanotube.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Systematic review of the literature on myringoplasty techniques without tympanomeatal flap elevation in children. MATERIAL AND METHODS A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines reported papers on patients under 18years of age undergoing myringoplasty for chronic tympanic perforation on a transcanal approach without tympanomeatal flap elevation. Tympanic closure rates and audiometric results were analyzed. RESULTS Twenty studies were included. Nine reported the butterfly technique, using a microscope or endoscope, with closure rate of 82.3% (246/299), for perforations of various sizes. Ten reported the fat-plug technique, with closure rate of 86.8% (869/1001), mostly for perforations of less than one-third of the tympanum. Both techniques improved audiometric results. Morbidity was very low. The absence of chronic otitis or co-morbidities (contralateral otitis media with effusion, craniofacial malformations, Down's syndrome) implies that patient selection technique may be necessary to obtain the best results. CONCLUSION Fat-plug myringoplasty, for small perforations, and butterfly cartilage myringoplasty seem to be reliable procedures in selected patients, with low morbidity in children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Multi-centre study of the National French Registry (EPIIC) of patients with cochlear implants, focusing on infants who were operated-on under the age of 24 months between 2012 and 2016. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 615 profoundly deaf infants, who received cochlear implants (CIs) before their second birthday, were included in the registry by different CI centers. Epidemiological, surgical, speech therapy and school, follow-up data were included in the registry, 12, 24, 36 and 48 months thereafter. The following parameters were studied: type of implantation (uni- or bilateral), complications, cause of deafness, category of auditory perception (CAP), Open-set word recognition score (OSW), speech intelligibility rating, lexical comprehension with EVIP (Peabody), communication mode and type of schooling. Bilateral simultaneous CI (BiCI) and unilateral CI (UniCI) groups were compared. RESULTS There were 744 implantations. The explantation-reimplantation rate, within the four-year follow-up, was just 3.6%. Mean implantation age was 16.0 months, and similar in the two groups (BiCI/UniCI). A total of 51% of children had their first implant between 12 and 18 months, and 15% before 12 months. Implantation was unilateral in 52% of cases. Fifty-six percent of the bilateral procedures were sequential, with a mean delay of 16.8 months for the second implantation. The cause of deafness was unknown in 52% of cases. Of the 48% (297/615) of attributed cases, 32% had clear genetic causes. The remaining deafness was due to cytomegalovirus (CMV, 8%), inner-ear malformation (5%) and meningitis (3%). The main complications were from infections (47%) and internal device failure (25%). Four years post-operation, 84% of the UniCI and 75% of BiCl groups had a CAP≥5, and 83% of UniCl and 100% BiCI had OSW≥80%. Furthermore 74% of UniCI and 77% of BiCI communicated orally and 85% of UniCI and 90% of BiCI integrated into mainstream schooling. CONCLUSION The French Registry of cochlear implants (EPIIC) is the only such national registry in the world. Our analysis illustrates the immediate benefits of, either single or double, cochlear implantation for language, perception skills and schooling.

Abstract
Endoscopic thyroid and parathyroid surgery was first described by Gagner in 1996, and Henry subsequently proposed a lateral endoscopic approach in 1999. Technical progress in the fields of optics, endoscopy, digital imaging and laparoscopy has gradually enhanced the feasibility and clinical utility of this technique for the treatment of benign and malignant lesions. To date, published paediatric cases have only concerned thyroid surgery. In the light of two clinical cases, this article describes our lateral endoscopic approach applied to paediatric parathyroid surgery.

Abstract
Today's great challenges of energy and informational technologies are addressed with a singular compound, Li- and Na-doped few-layer graphene. All that is impossible for graphite (homogeneous and high-level Na doping) and unstable for single-layer graphene works very well for this structure. The transformation of the Raman G line to a Fano line shape and the emergence of strong, metallic-like electron spin resonance (ESR) modes attest the high level of graphene doping in liquid ammonia for both kinds of alkali atoms. The spin-relaxation time in our materials, deduced from the ESR line width, is 6-8 ns, which is comparable to the longest values found in spin-transport experiments on ultrahigh-mobility graphene flakes. This could qualify our material as a promising candidate in spintronics devices. On the other hand, the successful sodium doping, this being a highly abundant metal, could be an encouraging alternative to lithium batteries.

Abstract
The nasopharyngeal swab is currently the main testing method used to diagnose COVID-19. The principle is to collect respiratory cells infected by the virus and to use the RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription - Polymerase Chain Reaction) technique to detect the RNA of the virus. The false negative rate is high, about 30%, which can mainly be explained by an incorrect execution of the technique may increase the false negative rate and decrease the test's sensitivity. The aim of this note is to help healthcare providers to perform this test correctly in adults and children.

Abstract
Objectif: rédiger des conseils de bonnes pratiques de prise en charge des pathologies ORL pédiatriques en contexte d'épidémie de SARS-CoV-2. Méthodes: ces conseils ont été rédigés sur la base de l'expérience clinique des experts sollicités pour la rédaction de manuscrit, ainsi que sur les recommandations de pratique clinique et publications disponibles sur le sujet dans la littérature. Les propositions feront l'objet de mises à jour en fonction de l'évolution des connaissances sur cette épidémie. Résultats: l’incidence des formes symptomatiques d’infection à SARS-CoV-2 chez l’enfant est faible (1–5%) et le pronostic est bon. Les indications de fibroscopies en consultation doivent être réduites aux seuls cas indispensables et ne pouvant être différés. Leur réalisation doit être entourée de précautions maximales, avec notamment port d’un masque FFP2 (Filtering FacePiece type 2). Les mêmes précautions s’appliquent aux lavages de nez au sérum salé lorsqu’ils sont pratiqués en milieu hospitalier, ainsi qu’aux soins de trachéotomie. Concernant les suspicions de corps étrangers inhalés et en dehors des cas cliniquement évidents, il est recommandé de prescrire un scanner thoracique avant de programmer une éventuelle endoscopie sous anesthésie générale. Les indications chirurgicales doivent se limiter aux urgences et aux cas ne pouvant être différés de plus de deux mois, particulièrement si ces chirurgies concernent les voies aériennes et notamment les fosses nasales et le cavum. Les décisions doivent idéalement être prises collégialement et notées par écrit. Les techniques chirurgicales doivent être adaptées aux risques de dissémination virale. Abstract
During the COVID-19 outbreak, personal protective equipment is widely used to limit infection of caregivers. Innovative solutions have been described to overcome supply shortage. The adaptation of the EasyBreath® surface snorkeling mask by the Prakash team has benefited from outstanding media coverage. We present four 3D-printed devices that we have modified from the initial innovative design in order to adapt to local constraints. We tested the mask during surgery. The modifications that we made provide better ergonomics, visibility and communication capacities, but that have no official approval for use and can therefore only be recommended in the absence of a validated alternative solution. 3D printing is a tool of prime importance in the production of devices for medical use in health crisis situations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Joint guidelines of the French Pediatric Otolaryngology Society (AFOP) and of the French Society of otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery (SFORL) on the management of paediatric otolaryngology patients in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS A nation-wide workgroup drew guidelines based on clinical experience, national and local recommendations and scientific literature. Proposals may have to be updated on a day-to-day basis. RESULTS In children, incidence of symptomatic COVID-19 (1-5%) is low and of good prognosis. The indications for nasal flexible endoscopy should be drastically limited. If undertaken, full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including FFP2 masks are required, as well as use of a sheath. Saline nose wash done by caregivers other than parents at home should require PPE. Unless foreign body tracheobronchial aspiration is clinically obvious, CT-scan should be performed to confirm indication of endoscopy. Surgical indications should be limited to emergencies and to cases that cannot be delayed beyond 2 months (especially endonasal, endopharyngeal laryngo-tracheobronchial procedures). Postponement should ideally be a group decision and recorded as such in the medical file. Surgical techniques should be adapted to limit the risk of viral dissemination in the air, avoiding the use of drills, microdebriders, monopolar cautery or lasers. Continuous suction should be placed near the operating field. In case of confirmed Covid-19 cases, or suspected cases (or in some centres systematically), PPE with FFP2 mask should be worn by all staff members present in the operating room.

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to give rhinologists advice on how to adapt their standard practice during the COVID-19 pandemic. The main goal of these recommendations is to protect healthcare workers against COVID-19 while continuing to provide emergency care so as to prevent loss of chance for patients. We reviewed our recommendations concerning consultations, medical prescriptions and surgical activity in rhinology.

Abstract
The experimental results on the ratios of branching fractions R(D)=B(B[over ¯]→Dτ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{τ})/B(B[over ¯]→Dℓ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{ℓ}) and R(D^{*})=B(B[over ¯]→D^{*}τ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{τ})/B(B[over ¯]→D^{*}ℓ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{ℓ}), where ℓ denotes an electron or a muon, show a long-standing discrepancy with the standard model predictions, and might hint at a violation of lepton flavor universality. We report a new simultaneous measurement of R(D) and R(D^{*}), based on a data sample containing 772×10^{6} BB[over ¯] events recorded at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^{+}e^{-} collider. In this analysis the tag-side B meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode and the signal-side τ is reconstructed in a purely leptonic decay. The measured values are R(D)=0.307±0.037±0.016 and R(D^{*})=0.283±0.018±0.014, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are in agreement with the standard model predictions within 0.2, 1.1, and 0.8 standard deviations for R(D), R(D^{*}), and their combination, respectively. This work constitutes the most precise measurements of R(D) and R(D^{*}) performed to date as well as the first result for R(D) based on a semileptonic tagging method.

Abstract
Theories beyond the standard model often predict the existence of an additional neutral boson, the Z^{'}. Using data collected by the Belle II experiment during 2018 at the SuperKEKB collider, we perform the first searches for the invisible decay of a Z^{'} in the process e^{+}e^{-}→μ^{+}μ^{-}Z^{'} and of a lepton-flavor-violating Z^{'} in e^{+}e^{-}→e^{±}μ^{∓}Z^{'}. We do not find any excess of events and set 90% credibility level upper limits on the cross sections of these processes. We translate the former, in the framework of an L_{μ}-L_{τ} theory, into upper limits on the Z^{'} coupling constant at the level of 5×10^{-2}-1 for M_{Z^{'}}≤6 GeV/c^{2}.

Abstract
Bacterial shape is physically determined by the peptidoglycan cell wall. The cell-wall-synthesis machinery responsible for rod shape in Escherichia coli is the processive 'Rod complex'. Previously, cytoplasmic MreB filaments were thought to govern formation and localization of Rod complexes based on local cell-envelope curvature. Using single-particle tracking of the transpeptidase and Rod-complex component PBP2, we found that PBP2 binds to a substrate different from MreB. Depletion and localization experiments of other putative Rod-complex components provide evidence that none of those provide the sole rate-limiting substrate for PBP2 binding. Consistently, we found only weak correlations between MreB and envelope curvature in the cylindrical part of cells. Residual correlations do not require curvature-based Rod-complex initiation but can be attributed to persistent rotational motion. We therefore speculate that the local cell-wall architecture provides the cue for Rod-complex initiation, either through direct binding by PBP2 or through an unknown intermediate.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to assess the incidence of respiratory tract infections in military settings between 2006 and 2015. PATIENTS AND METHODS We performed a retrospective epidemiological study of the entire military population from 2006 to 2015. Comprehensive data was collected from all medical centers, operational medical units, naval services, and army training hospitals and provided by the epidemiological surveillance of the armies. RESULTS The annual average population of the study was 331,394 soldiers. For acute respiratory tract infections (2006-2015), 22,818 cases were reported in metropolitan France, 3,211 cases in French overseas territories, 1,595 cases in the French Navy, and 1,318 cases in external military operations for a total of 28,942 cases. For influenza (2006-2013), 934 cases were reported in metropolitan France, 101 cases in French overseas territories, and 23 cases in external operations, for a total of 1,058 cases. The mean incidence rate of acute respiratory tract infections expressed as case number per 1,000 person-years (PY) was 8.7 PY (95% CI [8.6-8.8]) with an exceptional increased incidence rate in 2009 (25.9 PY, 95% CI [25.4-26.4]). The mean incidence rate of influenza was 0.35 PY (95% CI [0.33-0.37]) with a peak incidence rate of 1.9 PY in 2009. CONCLUSION Acute respiratory tract infections are at the forefront of infectious episodes in the French armies. Although not necessarily severe, current prevention measures are not enough to reduce the incidence threshold of these infections and need to be improved.
