Abstract
Abdominal lymph node chains and route of lymph drainage of various organs (stomach, duodenum, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small intestine, appendix, blind intestine, colon rectum) are analyzed according to their location. The role of conventional radiology and diagnostic imaging is evaluated in the study of abdominal lymphatic system with particular reference to lymphangiography and the new procedures of sonography, CT and MRI. Present methods used in inflammatory abdominal lymphadenopathy with special attention to tuberculous lymphadenitis, liver cirrhosis, neoplastic abdominal lymphadenopathy, colorectal and pancreatic cancer, are illustrated. Combined modality imaging is considered in gastric cancer based on the evolution of the classification of gastric lymph nodes. The role of sonography, endoscopic ultrasonography, spiral CT and MRI is assessed in gastric cancer N staging. A retrospective study is analyzed and perspectives for the application of a new CT protocol are proposed. PET potentialities in the study of abdominal lymph nodes are examined.

Abstract
We report a peculiar case of congenitally restricted sursumduction caused by an anomalous band-like structure within the right orbit which was completely distinct from the extraocular muscles. Imaging (static and dynamic ultrasound studies of the orbit and globe, CT and MRI) revealed the origin of the anomalous structure in Zinn's ring, its intraconal course and bulbar insertion. The ultrasound characteristics were similar to those of the extraocular muscles and optic nerve, and contractile activity appeared to occur during eye movements. The seemingly muscular nature of this structure and its total autonomy with respect to the normal extraocular muscles distinguish this case from previously reported cases of congenital restrictive strabismus.

The role of vision in postural control is crucial and is strictly related to the characteristics of the visual stimulus and to the performance of the visual system. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of chronically reduced visual cues upon postural control in patients affected by Congenital Nystagmus (CN). These patients have developed since birth a postural strategy mainly based on vestibular and somatosensorial cues. Fifteen patients affected by CN and 15 normal controls (NC) were enrolled in the study and evaluated by means of dynamic posturography. The overall postural control in CN patients was impaired as demonstrated by the equilibrium score and by the changes of the postural strategy. This impairment was even more enhanced in CN than in NC group when somatosensorial cues were experimentally reduced. An aspecific pattern of visual impairment and a pathological composite score were also present. Our data outline that in patients affected by CN an impairment of the postural balance is present especially when the postural control relies mainly on visual cues. Moreover, a decrease in accuracy of the somatosensory cues has a proportionally greater effect on balance than it has on normal subjects.

Abstract
Visually dependent postural stabilization decreases as a consequence of a long-standing reduction of visual cues in patients affected by congenital nystagmus. The aim of the present study was to verify whether the changes in postural control in this group of patients are due to ocular oscillations or to reduced visual acuity. Therefore, postural control was evaluated when the nystagmus was blocked by the blocking position or by prisms and compared with the postural score observed in a group of normal controls whose visual acuity had been artificially reduced to the same level as that of the patients using Bangerter's filters. The results show a statistically significant improvement of visually dependent postural stabilization when ocular oscillations are inhibited either by the gaze blocking position or by prisms. They also show that postural control in normal subjects with Bangerter's filters is reduced, but is still significantly better than that observed when ocular oscillations are inhibited in patients affected by congenital nystagmus. Our data strongly support the role of ocular oscillations in visually dependent postural control, since postural impairment recovered under any condition in which ocular oscillations were abolished, despite differences in visual acuity. Our data also show that reduced visual acuity decreases visually dependent postural control to a lesser degree than ocular oscillations. This could be due to the fact that ocular oscillations are a disturbing input, usually inhibited centrally, in order to avoid oscillopsia. This mechanism is probably responsible for the reduced role of visual cues in the postural control in this group of patients. The reduction of visual acuity, by comparison, merely causes a decrease in visual cues, depending on the degree of visual loss. It can be concluded that the impaired postural control in patients affected by congenital nystagmus is mainly due to ocular oscillations, with reduced visual acuity creating a secondary effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sexual behaviour is often altered in chronic illness. AIM To evaluate sexual behaviour in coeliac patients before and after treatment with a gluten-free diet. PATIENTS Fifty-five adults with coeliac disease and 51 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. METHODS Routine clinical and laboratory work-up was used for diagnosis of coeliac disease. Age of first sexual intercourse, prevalence of individuals who were sexually active, frequency of intercourse, reduction in sexual desire, difficulty in attaining orgasm, pain during intercourse, and prevalence of individuals defining themselves as satisfied with their sexual life were investigated by an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire administered before and after one year's treatment with a gluten-free diet in coeliac patients, and only once in controls. Analyses included clinical conditions, demographic and socio-economic data. RESULTS Compared with controls, untreated coeliac patients had a significantly lower frequency of intercourse and a lower prevalence of individuals satisfied with their sexual life. Patients with overt and subclinical coeliac disease did not show significant differences for any indices of sexual behaviour. Compared with untreated conditions, coeliac patients after one year of treatment had improved values for all indices of sexual behaviour: differences were significant for frequency of intercourse and prevalence of individuals satisfied with their sexual life. CONCLUSION Untreated coeliac disease, even in its subclinical presentation, is associated with disorders in sexual behaviour which are improved by the dietary treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE: To determine the vergence response, if any, in a homogenous group of patients suffering from strabismus and submitted to environmental induction of retinal disparity with respect to a control group of subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A series of 13 subjects was included in the present study (5 normal subjects and 8 patients suffering from small angle esotropia). The patients were evaluated in an illuminated environment where they were told to stare at a target which subtended a visual angle of 20 degrees and, successively, in the dark using a luminous stimulus which subtended a visual angle of 3.5 minutes. The vergence movements were evaluated using a four diopter base-out prism; eye movements were recorded under conditions of both binocular and monocular vision. Ocular movements were recorded by means of a magnetic search coil; the amplitude and peak velocity of the vergence movements were evaluated by computer analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using the Multiple Anova test for repeated measures. RESULTS: The data obtained in the present study demonstrate that: 1) there is a significant difference between binocular and monocular vision in both groups of subjects; however, the ocular response in the patients affected by strabismus was significantly different from that in the control group of subjects; 2) during monocular vision in the dark, the response of the strabismic patients was highly variable; 3) for both groups of subjects no significant differences were observed in the vergence response when a large-angle stimulus was employed in light conditions nor when a small-angle stimulus was utilized in a dark environment.

Abstract
Two pathways have been implicated in the regulation of maize ferritin synthesis in response to iron. One of them involves the plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) and controls the expression of ZmFer2 gene(s). Another pathway, ABA-independent, has been characterized in a de-rooted maize plantlet system and involves an oxidative step. The ZmFer1 maize ferritin gene is not regulated by ABA, and it is shown in this paper that the corresponding mRNA accumulates in de-rooted maize plantlets and BMS (Black Mexican Sweet) maize cell suspension cultures in response to iron via the oxidative pathway described previously. To investigate ZmFer1 gene regulation further, the BMS cell system has been used to develop a transient expression assay using a ZmFer1-beta-glucuronidase fusion. Both iron induction and antioxidant inhibition of ZmFer1 gene expression were observed in this system. Using Northern blot analysis and transient expression experiments, it was shown that both okadaic acid and calyculin A, two serine/ threonine phosphatase inhibitors, specifically inhibit ZmFer1 gene expression. These data indicate that an okadaic acid-sensitive protein phosphatase activity is involved in the regulation of the ZmFer1 ferritin gene in maize cells, and this activity is required for iron-induced expression of this gene.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Conflicting evidence is reported about the effect of treatment on bone mineral density (BMD) in adults with celiac disease (CD). This study analyzed the effects on BMD induced by treatment with a calcium-rich, gluten-free diet in adults with nonsilent CD. METHODS In 30 women and 11 men with newly diagnosed CD, BMD was measured at the right femur (femoral neck and right Ward's triangle) and the lumbar spine by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry under untreated conditions (pretreatment) and after 1-yr treatment with a calcium-rich, gluten-free diet. RESULTS On average, posttreatment BMD was greater than pretreatment BMD at the lumbar spine (mean +/- SE: 0.907 +/- 0.028 and 0.795 +/- 0.028 g/cm2, respectively; p < 0.001), the femoral neck (0.818 +/- 0.023 and 0.741 +/- 0.030 g/cm2, respectively; p = 0.002), and the Ward's triangle (0.703 +/- 0.025 and 0.654 +/- 0.025 g/cm2, respectively; p < 0.001). The greatest BMD change (percent of baseline) was observed at the lumbar spine (+14.1%), the smallest at the Ward's triangle (+7.5%). In the absence of appropriate controls, the BMD change expected in the patients under untreated conditions was estimated by regressing pretreatment BMD over duration of CD with control for gender and age at which CD became clinically evident. The regression coefficient of this analysis indicated that 1 yr of untreated CD was associated with a BMD decrease at the lumbar spine by 0.00570 g/cm2 (95% confidence interval -0.0103 to -0.0011 g/cm2). The 95% confidence interval of the treatment-induced change in BMD at the lumbar spine (+0.060 to +0.160 g/cm2) did not overlap the 95% confidence interval of the BMD change expected under untreated conditions. A large interindividual variability was observed in the BMD response to the treatment: in univariate and multivariate analyses, the treatment-induced change in BMD was significantly related to gender (greater in women than in men) and to pretreatment age and BMD. CONCLUSIONS The data show that BMD is increased by dietary treatment of CD in most but not all adult patients; pretreatment BMD, gender, and pretreatment age predict the bone response after a 1-yr treatment.

Abstract
The primary structure has been determined for PD-S2, a new type 1 ribosome-inactivating protein (RIP), isolated from the seeds of Phytolacca dioica L. PD-S2 has 265 amino-acid residues, and a molecular mass of 29586 Da. The polypeptide chain contains four amino-acid residues more than PAP-S, a type-I RIP isolated from the seeds of the taxonomically related plant Phytolacca americana L. We have compared the amino-acid sequence of PD-S2 with those of two other RIPs with known three-dimensional structure: PAP-S and ricin A-chain (RTA), the active chain of the best known type-2 RIP. This analysis shows an identity of 76% and 33% with PAP-S and RTA respectively, and a similarity of 82% and 54%. Comparison with the PAP sequence, isolated from leaves of P. americana, shows an even higher identity (80%) and similarity (87%). Furthermore, the amino-acid residues reported in other RIPs to be invariant and participate in the definition of the active site (Tyr-76, Tyr-127, Glu-179, Arg-182 and Trp-211; PD-S2 numbering) are all present. Asn-74, Arg-138, Gln-175, and Glu-208 are also conserved, while Asn-209 is substituted by Glu, all residues located in the active-site cleft of RIPs (Tahirov, T.H., Lu, T.-H., Liaw, Y.-C., Chen, J.L. and Lin, J.Y. (1995) Crystal structure of abrin-a at 2.14 A, J. Mol. Biol. 250, 354-367). The polypeptide chain of PD-S2 contains two N-glycosylation sites at Asn-112 and Asn-120, the second of which appears to be linked to sugars. Like PAP-S, PD-S2 does not contain free sulfhydryl groups. The four cysteinyl residues of the two proteins have corresponding sequence positions, most likely with identical S-S pairing.

Abstract
The elongation factor 1 beta (EF-1 beta), that in eukarya and archaea promotes the replacement of GDP by GTP on the elongation factor 1 alpha x GDP complex, was purified to homogeneity from the thermoacidophilic archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus (SsEF-1 beta). Its primary structure was established by sequenced Edman degradation of the entire protein or its proteolytic peptides. The molecular weight of SsEF-1 beta was estimated as about 10000 or 20000 under denaturing or native conditions respectively; this finding suggests that the native protein exists as a dimer. The peptide chain of SsEF-1 beta is much shorter than that of its eukaryotic analogues and homology is found only at their C-terminal region; no homology exists between SsEF-1 beta and eubacterial EF-Ts. At 50 degrees C, at a concentration of SsEF-1 beta 5-fold higher than that of SsEF-1 alpha x [3H]GDP the rate of the exchange of [3H]GDP for GTP becomes about 160-fold faster. An analysis of the values of the energetic parameters indicates that in the presence of SsEF-1 beta the GDP/GTP exchange is entropically favoured. At 100 degrees C the half-life of SsEF-1 beta is about 4 h.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Celiac disease may present in various forms. This study aimed to investigate whether gender affects the clinical presentation of the disease in adult celiac patients from the Mediterranean area. METHODS This study retrospectively analyzes data collected in all adult patients with celiac disease (n = 195) seen during the past 13 years at the Gastrointestinal Unit of the Federico II University of Naples, Italy. RESULTS In these series of patients the ratio of women to men was 3.33. Age at diagnosis was lower in women that in men (p < 0.05). Except for asthenia, all signs and symptoms were more frequent in women than in men. Hypochromic anemia was the most commonest finding in women and was 40% more frequent in women than in men (p < 0.001). Dyspepsia was twice as frequent in women as in men (p < 0.05); genital disorders were reported by 44% of women and by no men. Recent weight loss or low body mass index was the commonest finding in men. About 60% of men and women reported diarrhea; among patients without diarrhea, the prevalence of hypochromic anemia differed between sexes (p < 0.05), occurring in about 80% of women. CONCLUSION This study shows that the clinical presentation of celiac disease is not the same in men and women. The disease is not only more frequent in women than in men but is also more severe and more rapid. The data also suggest the need to look for celiac disease in patients with unexplained hypochromic anemia.

Abstract
A low-molecular-mass zinc-binding protein was purified from the eggs of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus using procedures that included gel-permeation and anion-exchange chromatography followed by HPLC. The primary structure of this protein was derived from the sequences of peptide fragments obtained by digestion with trypsin and thermolysin. The reconstructed sequence showed the presence of 20 cysteinyl residues, thus resembling that of a metallothionein. The Paracentrotus protein was most similar to the metallothionein of Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, another member of the order of Echinoida, living along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. However, the presence of non-conservative amino acid substitution, together with a deletion of two residues in the Strongylocentrotus metallothionein, make the similarity scores of the two sea urchin proteins lower than that of metallothioneins from vertebrates of the same order. In addition, the present data show that sea urchin metallothioneins display no homology with metallothioneins of any other species.

Abstract
Plant ferritin subunits are synthesized as precursor molecules; the transit peptide (TP) in their NH2 extremity, responsible for plastid targeting, is cleaved during translocation to this compartment. In addition, the N-terminus of the mature subunit contains a plant-specific sequence named extension peptide (EP) [Ragland, Briat, Gagnon, Laulhère, Massenet, and Theil, E.C. (1990) J. Biol. Chem. 265, 18339-18344], the function of which is unknown. A novel pea-seed ferritin cDNA, with a consensus ferroxidase centre conserved within H-type animal ferritins has been characterized. This pea-seed ferritin cDNA has been engineered using oligonucleotide-directed mutagenesis to produce DNA fragments (1) corresponding to the wild-type (WT) ferritin precursor, (2) with the TP deleted, (3) with both the TP and the plant specific EP sequences deleted and (4) containing the TP but with the EP deleted. These four DNA fragments have been cloned in an Escherichia coli expression vector to produce the corresponding recombinant pea-seed ferritins. Expression at 37 degrees C led to the accumulation of recombinant pea-seed ferritins in inclusion bodies, whatever the construct introduced in E. coli. Expression at 25 degrees C in the presence of sorbitol and betaine allowed soluble proteins to accumulate when constructs with the TP deleted were used; under this condition, E. coli cells transformed with constructs containing the TP were unable to accumulate recombinant protein. Recombinant ferritins purified from inclusion bodies were found to be assembled only when the TP was deleted; however assembled ferritin under this condition had a ferroxidase activity undetectable at acid pH. On the other hand, soluble recombinant ferritins with the TP deleted and expressed at 25 degrees C were purified as 24-mers containing an average of 40-50 iron atoms per molecule. Despite the conservation in the plant ferritin subunit of a consensus ferroxidase centre, the iron uptake activity in vitro at pH 6.8 was found to be lower than that of the recombinant human H-ferritin, though it was much more active than the recombinant human L-ferritin. The recombinant ferritin with both the TP and the EP deleted (r delta TP/EP) assembled correctly as a 24-mer; it has slightly higher ferroxidase activity and decreased solubility compared with the wild-type protein with the TP deleted (r delta TP). In addition, on denaturation by urea followed by renaturation by dialysis the r delta TP/EP protein showed a 25% increase in core-formation in vitro compared with the r delta TP protein.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract
A lectin was purified from the latex of Euphorbia marginata by affinity chromatography on acid-treated Sepharose 6B and elution with lactose. The lectin is a glycoprotein composed of two identical subunits with M(r) 30,000, approx. The haemagglutinating activity of the lectin is not specific for any human blood group, and is inhibited by galactose and galactose-containing sugars and by gentiobiose. The lectin is strongly mitogenic for human T-lymphocytes and induces the release of interleukin-1 beta and tumor necrosis factor-alpha from cultured mononuclear cells.
