Abstract
Fisheries activities for supplying marine productions were excessively overwhelming. Furthermore in the competitive industrialization, the impact on marine ecosystems and fisheries resources are severe due to the increase of various seabed litter such as plastic materials, styrofoam and plastic bottles and the deterioration of the marine environment. Despite these seriously situation, very few studies of some sea of Korea have been carried out on sedimentary waste fishing. Also some fisheries and there are few reports on plastics present on the seabed of around Korea. This study investigated the distribution of seabed litter collected from the seabed and characteristics of each area by using the trawl gear of the survey vessel from February to November 2018. The weight of all seabed litter collected during the investigation was 62,541.5 kg km-2, with a range of 0.2-15,019.7 kg km-2. The most amount of seabed litter was collected from sea block 106 in the South Sea, followed by sea blocks 76 and 82 in the East Sea. Through this study, which was conducted for the first time in all sea in around Korea, it can be used as basic data to understand the current status of seabed litter in the seabed and to establish effective policies at the led by the government.

Rapid Interference-free Analysis of β-Lapachone in Clinical Samples Using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry for a Pharmacokinetic Study in Humans. ANAL SCI 2021; 37:1105-1110. [PMID: 33390413 DOI: 10.2116/analsci.20p385] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/23/2022]
Abstract
A rapid analytical method developed for the analysis of β-lapachone in in vitro samples could not be directly applied to the analysis of clinical samples because of interference from unknown substances. Here, we developed and validated a rapid interference-free analytical method to accurately determine β-lapachone levels in human plasma using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. First, we achieved the baseline-separation of β-lapachone from any interfering substances within a total run time of 4 min by adjusting the eluent strength of the mobile phase. Second, precursor-ion scanning revealed the identity of the interfering substances. Sulfonate- or glucuronide-conjugated metabolites were converted to β-lapachone in an electrospray ion source, causing interference. In a method validation study, calibration curves for β-lapachone in human plasma were linear over a concentration range from 0.5 to 200 ng/mL (r > 0.999), and the lower limit of quantification was 0.5 ng/mL. The other validation parameters, including intra- and interday accuracy and precision, were acceptable with a coefficient of variation less than 10% (n = 5). The validated analytical method was successfully applied to a pharmacokinetic study of a single, oral dose of 100 mg MB12066 (a clinical form of β-lapachone) in healthy volunteers.

Management of indeterminate hepatic nodules and evaluation of factors predicting their malignant potential in patients with colorectal cancer. Sci Rep 2021; 11:13744. Abstract
Some liver nodules remain indeterminate despite hepatocyte-specific contrast MRI in patients with colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM). Our objective was to study the natural course and evaluate possible treatment strategies for indeterminate nodules. We retrospectively evaluated patients in whom MRI revealed 'indeterminate' or 'equivocal' nodules between January 2008 and October 2018. Patients were followed up until October 2019 or until death (median, 18 months; (1-130 months)). The incidence of patients with indeterminate nodules on MRI was 15.4% (60 of 389). The sensitivity and specificity of intraoperative ultrasound for detecting indeterminate nodules were 73.68% and 93.75%, respectively, with a positive predictive value of 96.6%. Over half of the patients followed up had benign nodules (58.8%). By comparing characteristics of patients with benign or malignant nodules in the follow up group, the ratio of positive lymph nodes to total number of lymph nodes resected (pLNR) was significantly greater in patients with malignant nodules (P = 0.006). Intraoperative ultrasound could be considered as an adjunct to MRI in patients with indeterminate nodules owing to its high positive predictive value. The pLNR could be used to help select which patients can undergo conservative therapy, at least in metachronous CRLM.

Abstract
We search for gravitational-wave signals produced by cosmic strings in the Advanced LIGO and Virgo full O3 dataset. Search results are presented for gravitational waves produced by cosmic string loop features such as cusps, kinks, and, for the first time, kink-kink collisions. A template-based search for short-duration transient signals does not yield a detection. We also use the stochastic gravitational-wave background energy density upper limits derived from the O3 data to constrain the cosmic string tension Gμ as a function of the number of kinks, or the number of cusps, for two cosmic string loop distribution models. Additionally, we develop and test a third model that interpolates between these two models. Our results improve upon the previous LIGO-Virgo constraints on Gμ by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude depending on the model that is tested. In particular, for the one-loop distribution model, we set the most competitive constraints to date: Gμ≲4×10^{-15}. In the case of cosmic strings formed at the end of inflation in the context of grand unified theories, these results challenge simple inflationary models.

Abstract
Objective Fimasartan, an angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker, and linagliptin, a dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 inhibitor, are frequently coadministered to treat patients with hypertension and diabetes, respectively. This study sought to evaluate the pharmacokinetic interactions between fimasartan and linagliptin after co-administration in healthy Korean subjects. Methods The overall study was divided into two separate parts, with each part designed as an open-label, multiple-dose, two-period, and single-sequence study. In Part A, to investigate the effect of linagliptin on fimasartan, 25 subjects received 120 mg fimasartan alone once daily for seven days during Period I, and 120 mg fimasartan with 20 mg linagliptin for seven days during Period II. In Part B, to examine the effect of fimasartan on linagliptin, 12 subjects received only linagliptin once daily for seven days during Period I, followed by concomitant administration of fimasartan for seven days during Period II, at the same doses used in Part A. Serial blood samples were collected at scheduled intervals for up to 24 h after the last dose to determine the steady-state pharmacokinetics of both drugs. Results Thirty-six subjects completed the study. The geometric mean ratio and 90% confidence intervals for maximum plasma concentration at steady state (Cmax,ss) and area under the concentration–time curve at steady state (AUCτ,ss) of fimasartan with or without linagliptin were 1.2633 (0.9175–1.7396) and 1.1740 (1.0499–1.3126), respectively. The corresponding values for Cmax,ss and AUCτ,ss of linagliptin with or without fimasartan were 0.9804 (0.8480–1.1336) and 0.9950 (0.9322–1.0619), respectively. A total of eight adverse events (AEs) were reported and the incidence of AEs did not increase significantly with co-administration of the drugs. Conclusion Our results suggest that there are no clinically significant pharmacokinetic interactions between fimasartan and linagliptin when co-administered. Treatments were well tolerated during the study, with no serious adverse effects. Clinical Trial Registry http://clinicaltrials.gov, NCT03250052.

Abstract
BACKGROUND LLR is widely adapted for HCC, while LLR in PS segments is still challenging. With recent improvement of techniques and accumulation of experiences, LLR in PS segments is feasible, but studies investigating the result after the modifications are lacking. METHODS In this single-center, retrospective study, 149 patients who underwent LLR for HCC located in PS segments from September 2003 to December 2016 were analyzed. The patients were divided into Group 1 (n=43) and Group 2 (n=106) who underwent LLR before and after 2012, respectively, when advanced techniques including use of intercostal trocars, Pringle maneuver, and semi-lateral position of patient were introduced. Also, these patients were compared with those who underwent open liver resection (OLR; n=124) for HCC in PS segments during the same period. RESULTS Mean operative time (394.7 minutes vs 331.2 minutes; P=0.013), intraoperative blood loss (1545.8 ml vs 1208.2 ml; P=0.020), and hospital stay (11.6 days vs 9.2, P<0.001) were significantly less in Group 2. Postoperative complication rate (18.6% vs 18.9%; P=0.970), open conversion rate (23% vs 17%; P=0.374), 5-year overall (79% vs 89%; P=0.607) and 5-year disease-free (52% vs 53%; P=0.657) survival rates were not significantly different between the groups. Compared to the OLR group, complication rate (40.3% vs 18.8%; P< 0.001) and hospital stay (17.6 days vs 9.7 days; P< 0.001) were significantly lower in the LLR group. CONCLUSION The complexity of LLR for HCC in PS segments is being gradually overcome by the introduction of advanced techniques.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Minor laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) is currently becoming standard treatment option for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) while major LLR is still challenging. Recent advancement of surgical techniques has enabled surgeons to perform major LLR. This study compared the outcomes of major LLR for HCC before and after the adaptation of technological improvements. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 141 patients who underwent major LLR for HCC from January 2004 to July 2018.32 open conversion cases were excluded. We divided the patients into two groups according to the date of operation: Group 1 (n = 38) and Group 2 (n = 71) who underwent major LLR before and after 2012, when advanced techniques including the use of intercostal trocars, Pringle maneuver, and semi-lateral position of patient were introduced. We also compared these patients including open conversion cases (n = 141) with those who underwent major open liver resection (OLR; n = 131) during the same period. RESULTS Mean operative time (413.0 min vs 331.0 min; P = 0.009), transfusion rate (31.6% vs 11.3%, P = 0.009) and hospital stay (9.8 days vs 8.5 days; P = 0.001) were significantly less in Group 2. Intraoperative blood loss (1269.7 ml vs 844.5 ml; P = 0.341) and postoperative complication (15.8% vs 23.9%; P = 0.320) were not significantly different between the groups. Although tumor size in OLR group and type of resection was different, transfusion rate (36.6% vs 24.1%; P = 0.026), postoperative complication (41.2% vs 25.5%; P = 0.007), and hospital stay (17.2 days vs 10.0 days; P < 0.001) were significantly lower in LLR group. CONCLUSION Development of surgical techniques have gradually improved the surgical outcomes of the laparoscopic major liver resection.

Abstract
On May 21, 2019 at 03:02:29 UTC Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observed a short duration gravitational-wave signal, GW190521, with a three-detector network signal-to-noise ratio of 14.7, and an estimated false-alarm rate of 1 in 4900 yr using a search sensitive to generic transients. If GW190521 is from a quasicircular binary inspiral, then the detected signal is consistent with the merger of two black holes with masses of 85_{-14}^{+21} M_{⊙} and 66_{-18}^{+17} M_{⊙} (90% credible intervals). We infer that the primary black hole mass lies within the gap produced by (pulsational) pair-instability supernova processes, with only a 0.32% probability of being below 65 M_{⊙}. We calculate the mass of the remnant to be 142_{-16}^{+28} M_{⊙}, which can be considered an intermediate mass black hole (IMBH). The luminosity distance of the source is 5.3_{-2.6}^{+2.4} Gpc, corresponding to a redshift of 0.82_{-0.34}^{+0.28}. The inferred rate of mergers similar to GW190521 is 0.13_{-0.11}^{+0.30} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1}.

[PMID: 32656160 PMCID: PMC7327189 DOI: 10.12793/tcp.2020.28.e8] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/28/2020] [Revised: 06/16/2020] [Accepted: 06/21/2020] [Indexed: 11/19/2022] Open
Abstract
This study compared the pharmacokinetics of a fixed-dose combination (FDC) of candesartan (16 mg) and amlodipine (10 mg) versus coadministration of individual formulations to clarify the bioequivalence of the FDC. In this randomized, open-label, single-dose, 2-treatment, 2-way crossover study, healthy Korean volunteers received a single dose of candesartan (16 mg) with amlodipine (10 mg) as either an FDC or single agents concomitantly administered, with a 2-week washout period. Serial blood samples were collected up to 72 hours after dosing for each treatment period, and plasma concentrations of candesartan and amlodipine were measured using a validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method. A total of 39 subjects completed the study. The geometric mean ratios (GMRs) and 90% confidence intervals (CIs) for the area under the plasma concentration-time curve from time 0 to the last measurement (AUC0-t) and the peak plasma concentration (Cmax) for candesartan were 1.0182 (0.9562–1.0841) and 0.9492 (0.8726–1.0324), respectively. The GMR and 90% CI for the AUC0-t and Cmax for amlodipine were 1.0552 (1.0255–1.0857) and 1.0668 (1.0259–1.1094), respectively. In conclusion, the new FDC formulation of candesartan (16 mg) and amlodipine (10 mg) was bioequivalent to the concomitant administration of single agents. A single dose of candesartan/amlodipine as the FDC or as single agents was well tolerated.

Abstract
The role of the isoagglutinin (IA) titer in liver transplantation (LT) is still not well defined, but the general belief is that a higher titer may result in a higher risk of rejection in ABO-incompatible living donor LT. To reduce the IA titer by 1:16 or lower, plasmapheresis is usually performed before transplantation. However, there is no established protocol for patients for whom plasmapheresis has failed before reaching the target IA titers. Here, we report the cases of three patients who show high baseline IA titers and have failed plasmapheresis: no-response to plasmapheresis, allergic reaction associated with plasmapheresis, and anaphylactic reaction to platelet transfusion. For various reasons, after several plasmapheresis procedures, IA titers were not effectively reduced. In these patients, splenectomy and intravenous immunoglobulin (0.8 g/kg, from the anhepatic phase to 2 days after transplantation) were carried. The protocol biopsy on postoperative day 7 showed no histologic evidence of meaningful acute rejection. The main aim of this work is to demonstrate that we can apply this protocol to patients who have high baseline IA titers and have failed plasmapheresis. Furthermore, this report is enhanced to promote to the transplant community this approach with this type of recipient.

Lee HW, Kim KM. Clinical significance of heat shock protein 90α expression as a biomarker of prognosis in patients with gastric cancer. Niger J Clin Pract 2020; 22:1698-1705. Abstract
Background Heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) possesses two major isoforms - HSP90α and HSP90β. They have essential roles in the protection against stressful conditions. They are also important for the re-establishment of cellular homeostasis. We investigated the clinical significance of HSP90α and HSP90β expression in patients with gastric cancer (GC). Methods HSP90α and HSP90β expression levels were examined immunohistochemically in surgical specimens obtained from 186 GC patients. The correlations between their expression levels and clinicopathological parameters including patient survival were analyzed. Results The frequencies of larger tumor size (maximum diameter ≥4 cm) and more prominent tumor invasion (≥pT3) in the high intensity HSP90α expression group were 73.4% and 68.8% higher, respectively, than those in the low intensity group (both P = 0.001). High HSP90α expression level was also significantly associated with lymphatic invasion, lymph node metastasis, and advanced stage (TNM stage ≥III) disease (P = 0.047, P = 0.046, and P = 0.004, respectively). Patients with high HSP90α expression levels demonstrated significantly worse survival than those with low HSP90α expression levels (P = 0.047). In contrast, survival did not differ significantly according to the intensity of HSP90β expression. Conclusions Our results showed that HSP90α overexpression might be associated with disease progression and poorer survival in patients with GC. Therefore, HSP90α could be used as possible biomarker for the prognosis of GC.

Abstract
We present a search for subsolar mass ultracompact objects in data obtained during Advanced LIGO's second observing run. In contrast to a previous search of Advanced LIGO data from the first observing run, this search includes the effects of component spin on the gravitational waveform. We identify no viable gravitational-wave candidates consistent with subsolar mass ultracompact binaries with at least one component between 0.2 M_{⊙}-1.0 M_{⊙}. We use the null result to constrain the binary merger rate of (0.2 M_{⊙}, 0.2 M_{⊙}) binaries to be less than 3.7×10^{5} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} and the binary merger rate of (1.0 M_{⊙}, 1.0 M_{⊙}) binaries to be less than 5.2×10^{3} Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1}. Subsolar mass ultracompact objects are not expected to form via known stellar evolution channels, though it has been suggested that primordial density fluctuations or particle dark matter with cooling mechanisms and/or nuclear interactions could form black holes with subsolar masses. Assuming a particular primordial black hole (PBH) formation model, we constrain a population of merging 0.2 M_{⊙} black holes to account for less than 16% of the dark matter density and a population of merging 1.0 M_{⊙} black holes to account for less than 2% of the dark matter density. We discuss how constraints on the merger rate and dark matter fraction may be extended to arbitrary black hole population models that predict subsolar mass binaries.

Abstract
Purpose S-1 is an oral fluoropyrimidine anticancer drug consisting of the 5-fluorouracil prodrug tegafur combined with gimeracil and oteracil. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetic (PK), bioequivalence, and safety of a newly developed generic formulation of S-1 compared with the branded reference formulation, in Korean gastric cancer patients. Methods This was a single-center, randomized, open-label, single-dose, two-treatment, two-way crossover study. Eligible subjects were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive the test formulation or reference formulation, followed by a one-week washout period and administration of the alternate formulation. Serial blood samples were collected at 0 hrs (predose), 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, 36, and 48 hrs after dosing in each period. The plasma concentrations of tegafur, 5-FU, gimeracil, and oteracil were analyzed using a validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method. The PK parameters were calculated using a non-compartmental method. Results In total, 29 subjects completed the study. All of the 90% confidence intervals (CIs) of the geometric mean ratios (GMRs) fell within the predetermined acceptance range. No serious adverse events were reported during the study. Conclusion The new S-1 formulation met the Korean regulatory requirement for bioequivalence. Both S-1 formulations were well tolerated in all subjects. Abstract
Abstract
Background
Data regarding clinical outcomes of biodegradable polymer drug-eluting stent (BP-DES) versus second-generation durable polymer drug-eluting stent (DP-DES) in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) are inconclusive.
Purpose
We aimed to perform a meta-analysis to investigate the clinical outcomes of BP-DES compared with second-generation DP-DES in patients who have undergone PCI.
Methods
We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases through January 2019 for randomized controlled trials comparing BP-DES with second-generation DP-DES in patients treated with PCI. All-cause death, cardiac death, myocardial infarction (MI), target vessel revascularization (TVR), target lesion revascularization (TLR), definite/probable stent thrombosis (ST) were compared between the groups. Additionally, a landmark analysis with the landmark set at 1 year and a subgroup analysis according to stent characteristics were performed.
Results
Data from 23 trials including 28802 randomized patients were analyzed. At a median follow up of 3.1 years, no significant differences were found in terms of all-cause death (odds ratio [OR] 1.05, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.95–1.16), cardiac death (OR 1.01, 95% CI 0.87–1.17), MI (OR 0.92, 95% CI 0.82–1.03), TVR (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.86–1.11), TLR (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.85–1.11), and definite/probable ST (OR 0.86, 95% CI 0.70–1.07) between the groups. Landmark analysis showed that there were similar risks in all-cause death (OR 1.04, 95% CI 0.93–1.17), cardiac death (OR 1.11, 95% CI 0.92–1.36), MI (OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.79–1.13), TVR (OR 0.95, 95% CI 0.73–1.23), TLR (OR 1.00, 95% CI 0.80–1.24), and definite/probable ST (OR 0.92, 95% CI 0.67–1.28) between the groups. The similar tendency of any study endpoints between the groups was consistent in the subgroup, including stent platform (stainless steel vs. alloy), the drug coating distribution (abluminal vs. circumferential), the polymer degradation period (<6 months vs. >6 months), or the drug release duration (<6 months vs. >6 months) of BP-DES, or the DAPT duration (≥6 months vs. ≥12 months). However, the uses of BP-DES with sirolimus-eluting (OR 0.84, 95% CI 0.72–0.98) or ultrathin strut (defined as <70μm; OR 0.81, 95% CI 0.68–0.97) were predictive for lower risk of MI.
Clinical outcomes
Conclusions
In our updated meta-analysis, BP-DES implantation was associated with comparable clinical outcomes compared with second-generation DP-DES implantation. However, PCI with ultrathin biodegradable polymer sirolimus-eluting stent could reduce the risk of MI.

P2799Long-term outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention with biodegradable polymer drug-eluting stent versus second-generation durable polymer drug-eluting stent: evidence from a meta-analysis. Abstract
Abstract
Background
The true benefit of biodegradable polymer drug-eluting stent (BP-DES) over second-generation durable polymer drug-eluting stent (DP-DES) expected to be represented during late period of follow-up after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), but prior meta-analysis only evaluated short-term outcomes.
Purpose
We aimed to compare the long-term clinical outcomes after PCI with BP-DES versus second-generation DP-DES by a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
Methods
Randomized controlled trials comparing BP-DES with second-generation DP-DES implantations were searched through PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases. All-cause death, cardiac death, myocardial infarction (MI), target vessel revascularization (TVR), target lesion revascularization (TLR), and definite/probable stent thrombosis (ST) were compared between the groups. In addition, a landmark analysis with the landmark set at 1-year and a subgroup analysis based on stent characteristics were performed.
Results
Fifteen trials that included a total of 21311 randomized patients with at least 2 years follow-up were analyzed. At a median follow-up of 4.2 years, no significant differences in the risks of all-cause death (odds ratio [OR] 1.03, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.94–1.14), cardiac death (OR 1.03, 95% CI 0.88–1.20), MI (OR 0.90, 95% CI 0.79–1.01), TVR (OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.82–1.12), TLR (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.85–1.11), and definite/probable ST (OR 0.84, 95% CI 0.67–1.05) were found between the groups. In the 1-year landmark analysis, the rates of all-cause death (OR 1.04, 95% CI 0.93–1.17), cardiac death (OR 1.11, 95% CI 0.92–1.36), MI (OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.79–1.13), TVR (OR 0.95, 95% CI 0.73–1.23), TLR (OR 1.00, 95% CI 0.80–1.24), and definite/probable ST (OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.67–1.31) were similar between the groups. There were comparable rates of any study endpoints between the groups regardless of stent platform (stainless steel vs. alloy), the polymer degradation period (<6 months vs. >6 months) or the drug release duration (<6 months vs. >6 months) of BP-DES, or the DAPT duration (≥6 months vs. ≥12 months). However, the use of BP-DES with sirolimus eluting (OR 0.82, 95% CI 0.70–0.97), circumferential drug distribution (OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.65–0.96), thin strut (defined as <100μm; OR 0.83, 95% CI 0.70–0.97), or ultrathin strut (defined as <70μm; OR 0.78, 95% CI 0.64–0.94) were associated with lower rates of MI than did second-generation DP-DES. Moreover, BP-DES with circumferential drug distribution (OR 0.82, 95% CI 0.69–0.98) was predictive for reduced rates of TVR.
Clinical outcomes
Conclusions
In this meta-analysis, long-term clinical outcomes were equivalent between BP-DES and second-generation DP-DES implantations. However, among BP-DESs, the improved risks of MI in those with sirolimus eluting, circumferential drug distribution, thin strut, or ultrathin strut and decreased rates of TVR in those with circumferential drug distribution were noted.

Abstract
Protein tyrosine kinase 7 (PTK7), a catalytically defective receptor protein tyrosine kinase (RPTK), plays an oncogenic role by activating an unidentified TKI-258 (dovitinib)-sensitive RPTK in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) cells. Here, we demonstrate that among TKI-258–sensitive RPTKs, fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) 1 is significantly up-regulated in ESCC tissues and cell lines. We show that PTK7 colocalizes with FGFR1 and binds it via its extracellular domain in human embryonic kidney 293 and ESCC TE-10 cells. PTK7 knockdown not only reduced ligand-free and fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-induced phosphorylation of FGFR1 but also the interaction of signaling adaptor proteins with FGFR1 and activation of downstream signaling proteins in TE-10 cells. In addition, PTK7 knockdown reduced FGF-induced oncogenic phenotypes including proliferation, anchorage-independent colony formation, wound healing, and invasion in ESCC cells. Taken together, our data demonstrate that PTK7 binds and activates FGFR1 independent of FGF and thus increases oncogenicity of PTK7- and FGFR1-positive cancers such as ESCC.—Shin, W.-S., Lee, H. Abstract
The recent discovery by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo of a gravitational wave signal from a binary neutron star inspiral has enabled tests of general relativity (GR) with this new type of source. This source, for the first time, permits tests of strong-field dynamics of compact binaries in the presence of matter. In this Letter, we place constraints on the dipole radiation and possible deviations from GR in the post-Newtonian coefficients that govern the inspiral regime. Bounds on modified dispersion of gravitational waves are obtained; in combination with information from the observed electromagnetic counterpart we can also constrain effects due to large extra dimensions. Finally, the polarization content of the gravitational wave signal is studied. The results of all tests performed here show good agreement with GR.

Abstract
Dysfunctional salivary glands (SGs) are a clinical challenge due to the lack of effective treatments. Cell therapy with stem/progenitor cells may improve this situation by providing promising therapeutic solutions. Therefore, exploring abundant cellular sources is important. Three major pairs of SGs are located in different anatomic regions: the parotid glands, the submandibular glands, and the sublingual glands. Although SG stem/progenitor cells can be isolated and cultivated from all major SGs as salispheres, the differences among SG origins remain unclear. In this study, salispheres were successfully isolated from all major SGs. The salispheres demonstrated unique cellular features that originated from their native tissues. The characteristic expression profiles and cellular features of SG stem cells were demonstrated in all salispheres. When they were transplanted into irradiated animals, the salispheres were all capable of improving the saliva secretion that was disrupted by irradiation. Typical histologic structures could be observed in most parts of the treated glands, and the fibrotic environments of irradiated submandibular glands were remodeled by all salispheres regardless of origins. This study characterized the cellular features and in vivo effects of salispheres that were derived from different anatomic origins. The results suggest the possibility of functional redundancy among distinct pairs of major SGs, which is useful for the design of cell therapy to treat dysfunctional glandular organs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Capecitabine plus oxaliplatin (XELOX) has shown modest activity and tolerable toxicity in a phase II trial for biliary tract cancers (BTCs). Meanwhile, gemcitabine plus oxaliplatin (GEMOX) has been the reference arm in recent phase II and III trials for BTCs. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of XELOX versus GEMOX as first-line therapy for advanced BCTs. PATIENTS AND METHODS In this open-label, randomized, phase III, noninferiority trial, we randomly selected patients with metastatic BCTs to receive GEMOX (gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 on days 1 and 8, and oxaliplatin 100 mg/m2 on day 1) or XELOX (capecitabine 1000 mg/m2, twice daily, on days 1-14 and oxaliplatin 130 mg/m2 on day 1) as first-line treatment, given every 3 weeks, totaling eight cycles. The primary end point was to prove the noninferiority of XELOX to GEMOX in terms of 6-month progression-free survival (PFS) rate. RESULTS In total, 114 patients randomly received GEMOX and 108 randomly received XELOX. The median PFS was 5.3 months for the GEMOX group and 5.8 months for the XELOX group. The 6-month PFS rate was 44.5% for the GEMOX group and 46.7% for the XELOX group. The 95% confidence interval of the 6-month PFS rate difference between both groups was -12% to 16%, meeting the criteria for noninferiority of XELOX to GEMOX. There was no difference in objective response (P=0.171) and median overall survival (P=0.131) between both groups. The most common grade three to four adverse events were neutropenia and thrombocytopenia. No patient died of treatment-related causes. The XELOX group had significantly lower frequencies of hospital visits than the GEMOX group (P<0.001). CONCLUSION XELOX showed significant noninferiority to GEMOX in terms of 6-month PFS rate. Thus, XELOX could be an alternative first-line treatment of BCTs. TRIAL REGISTRATION This study was registered in ClinicalTrials.gov (number NCT01470443).

Abstract
To improve early renal allograft function, it is important to develop a noninvasive diagnostic method for acute T cell-mediated rejection (TCMR). This study aims to explore potential noninvasive urinary biomarkers to screen for acute TCMR in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) using untargeted metabolomic profiling. Urinary metabolites, collected from KTRs with stable graft function (STA) or acute TCMR episodes, were analyzed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Multivariate statistical analyses were performed to discriminate differences in urinary metabolites between the two groups. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the diagnostic performance of potential urinary biomarkers. Statistical analysis revealed the differences in urinary metabolites between the two groups and indicated several statistically significant metabolic features suitable for potential biomarkers. By comparing the retention times and mass fragmentation patterns of the chemicals in metabolite databases, samples, and standards, six of these features were clearly identified. ROC curve analysis showed the best performance of the training set (area under the curve value, 0.926; sensitivity, 90.0%; specificity, 84.6%) using a panel of five potential biomarkers: guanidoacetic acid, methylimidazoleacetic acid, dopamine, 4-guanidinobutyric acid, and L-tryptophan. The diagnostic accuracy of this model was 62.5% for an independent test dataset. LC-MS-based untargeted metabolomic profiling is a promising method to discriminate between acute TCMR and STA groups. Our model, based on a panel of five potential biomarkers, needs to be further validated in larger scale studies.
