Abstract
Removal of bacteria by handwashing with ozonated water was evaluated using the ASTM E1174 standard test method. Thirty healthy volunteers were assigned randomly to three groups: ozonated water, antimicrobial soap and water, and non-antimicrobial soap and water. A 3 log10 cfu reduction was achieved by washing hands with ozonated water or antimicrobial soap and water. However, ozonated water was not significantly superior to non-antimicrobial soap and water. Ozonated water may remove bacteria from the hands to at least a similar extent as that by non-antimicrobial soap and water in the absence of visible dirt or body fluid contamination.

Abstract
Objective Previous work has shown that high body mass index (BMI) is associated with low grey matter volume. However, evidence on the relationship between waist circumference (WC) and brain volume is relatively scarce. Moreover, the influence of mild obesity (as indexed by WC and BMI) on brain volume remains unclear. This study explored the relationships between WC and BMI and grey matter volume in a large sample of Japanese adults. Methods The participants were 792 community-dwelling adults (523 men and 269 women). Brain magnetic resonance images were collected, and the correlation between WC or BMI and global grey matter volume were analysed. The relationships between WC or BMI and regional grey matter volume were also investigated using voxel-based morphometry. Results Global grey matter volume was not correlated with WC or BMI. Voxel-based morphometry analysis revealed significant negative correlations between both WC and BMI and regional grey matter volume. The areas correlated with each index were more widespread in men than in women. In women, the total area of the regions significantly correlated with WC was slightly greater than that of the regions significantly correlated with BMI. Conclusions Results show that both WC and BMI were inversely related to regional grey matter volume, even in Japanese adults with somewhat mild obesity. Especially in populations with less obesity, such as the female participants in current study, WC may be more sensitive than BMI as a marker of grey matter volume differences associated with obesity.

Abstract
Strongly enhanced quantum fluctuations often lead to a rich variety of quantum-disordered states. Developing approaches to enhance quantum fluctuations may open paths to realize even more fascinating quantum states. Here, we demonstrate that a coupling of localized spins with the zero-point motion of hydrogen atoms, that is, proton fluctuations in a hydrogen-bonded organic Mott insulator provides a different class of quantum spin liquids (QSLs). We find that divergent dielectric behavior associated with the approach to hydrogen-bond order is suppressed by the quantum proton fluctuations, resulting in a quantum paraelectric (QPE) state. Furthermore, our thermal-transport measurements reveal that a QSL state with gapless spin excitations rapidly emerges upon entering the QPE state. These findings indicate that the quantum proton fluctuations give rise to a QSL—a quantum-disordered state of magnetic and electric dipoles—through the coupling between the electron and proton degrees of freedom. The organic material κ-H3(Cat-EDT-TTF)2 has been suggested to exhibit a quantum spin liquid phase in which quantum fluctuations prevent the formation of magnetic order. Here, the authors show that this may be a result of fluctuations of hydrogen atoms, rather than more conventional geometric frustration.

Abstract
Charge ordering (CO) is a phenomenon in which electrons in solids crystallize into a periodic pattern of charge-rich and charge-poor sites owing to strong electron correlations. This usually results in long-range order. In geometrically frustrated systems, however, a glassy electronic state without long-range CO has been observed. We found that a charge-ordered organic material with an isosceles triangular lattice shows charge dynamics associated with crystallization and vitrification of electrons, which can be understood in the context of an energy landscape arising from the degeneracy of various CO patterns. The dynamics suggest that the same nucleation and growth processes that characterize conventional glass-forming liquids guide the crystallization of electrons. These similarities may provide insight into our understanding of the liquid-glass transition.

Abstract
Objectives Japanese and South Koreans have traditionally been shorter than Europeans, but have recently become appreciably taller. The aim was to quantify the secular trend patterns in height and weight growth in the two countries over 50 years using the SITAR growth curve model. Methods Data on mean height and weight by sex in 1‐year age groups from 1 to 20 years were obtained by decade in South Korea (1965–2005) and Japan (1950–2010). The data were analyzed using SITAR (SuperImposition by Translation And Rotation), which estimates a mean curve and three adjustments–size, timing and intensity–reflecting how the individual surveys differ from the mean. A sensitivity analysis compared results for the Japanese data based on cohort as well as period. Results Growth patterns in the two countries changed dramatically over the study period, affecting not only height and weight but also developmental age, in that the growth period advanced in timing and shrank in duration. SITAR fitted the data well. The trends were larger in South Korea than Japan, and puberty timing in Japan stabilized by 1970. Most of the height increment seen in adults had already accrued by age 1.5 years, whereas the adult weight increment accrued throughout childhood. Conclusions The secular height trend in these countries represents increased growth in the long bones during infancy, so it can be viewed as the inverse of stunting. There are striking country differences in growth pattern, but they are not easily explained by differences in national income, diet or lifestyle.

Abstract
Aberrant dopamine D2 receptor (D2R) activity is associated with neuropsychiatric disorders, making those receptors targets for antipsychotic drugs. Here, we report that novel signaling through the intracellularly localized D2R long isoform (D2LR) elicits extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activation and dendritic spine formation through Rabex-5/platelet-derived growth factor receptor-β (PDGFRβ)-mediated endocytosis in mouse striatum. We found that D2LR directly binds to and activates Rabex-5, promoting early-endosome formation. Endosomes containing D2LR and PDGFRβ are then transported to the Golgi apparatus, where those complexes trigger Gαi3-mediated ERK signaling. Loss of intracellular D2LR-mediated ERK activation decreased neuronal activity and dendritic spine density in striatopallidal medium spiny neurons (MSNs). In addition, dendritic spine density in striatopallidal MSNs significantly increased following treatment of striatal slices from wild-type mice with quinpirole, a D2R agonist, but those changes were lacking in D2LR knockout mice. Moreover, intracellular D2LR signaling mediated effects of a typical antipsychotic drug, haloperidol, in inducing catalepsy behavior. Taken together, intracellular D2LR signaling through Rabex-5/PDGFRβ is critical for ERK activation, dendritic spine formation and neuronal activity in striatopallidal MSNs of mice.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Tumor microenvironment has been considered to have an active role in determining the aggressiveness of tumor cells. Recently, programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1) expression or tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) are known to be an important prognostic factor of breast cancer. However, the correlation of expression of PD-L1 and TILs still remains unclear. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a heterogeneous tumor that encompasses many different subclasses. Further identification of these subclasses is necessary in order to predict prognosis and choose appropriate treatments. Our goal was to correlate PD-L1 expression with clinicopathological features including TILs by using a large cohort of TNBCs.
Patients and Methods: This study included 248 patients with primary TNBC who underwent resection without neoadjuvant chemotherapy at our three hospitals between January 2004 and December 2014. The tumor subtypes were routinely determined immunohistochemically by using resected specimens. IHC scoring for PD-L1 expression was defined in reference to that for HER2 expression. PD-L1 positivity was defined as both IHC 2+ and IHC 3+. Cases were defined as high if stromal TILs ≥50% according to recommendations by the International TILs Working Group.
Results: Of the 248 TNBCs, PD-L1 were expressed as positive in 103 (41.5%) tumors, and TILs were highly present in 118 (47.6%) tumors. PD-L1 expression was significantly correlated with higher levels of TILs (P < 0.0001). There was no significant difference when the prognosis of the patients who had PD-L1-positive tumors was compared with that of the patients who had PD-L1-negative tumors (P = 0.56 in recurrence free survival [RFS] and P = 0.13 in overall survival [OS]). Meanwhile, the patients with high-TILs tumors had longer OS, compared to the patients with low-TILs tumors (P = 0.55 in RFS and P = 0.016 in OS). The analysis in the cross effect between PD-L1 expression and TILs using cox proportional hazards model demonstrated that the PD-L1 expression and TILs are not independent factors(P = 0.0018 in RFS and P = 0.015 in OS). The PD-L1-positive group with low-TILs had significantly shorter survival than the PD-L1-positive group with high-TILs (hazard ratio [HR] = 4.7, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.6–12.7, P = 0.0067 in RFS; HR = 8.4, 95%CI 2.3-30.3, P = 0.0019 in OS).
Conclusions: Our data indicated that PD-L1 expression was related to higher levels of TILs, and PD-L1-positive tumors with low-TILs were associated with poor prognosis in patients with TNBCs. It is proposed that these biomarkers may be of use for predicting their prognosis and essential in the subclassification of TNBCs.

Abstract
Retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma is a relatively rare and aggressive tumor. Because of its rarity, it is difficult to arrive at a definite diagnosis preoperatively and to design an effective strategy. Here the authors report a case of peritoneal leiomyosarcoma in which diagnosis was difficult because the clinical course resembled that of ovarian cancer. A 77-year-old woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer underwent laparotomy. The excised tumor contained a necrotic polypoid mass that histologically displayed the features of leiomyosarcoma. The patient received adjuvant chemotherapy with a combination of gemcitabine and docetaxel but died two months after surgery owing to the aggressive behavior of the tumor. Because the preoperative diagnosis in this case was ovarian cancer, arriving at a treatment strategy assuming peritoneal leiomyosarcoma was difficult. If complete surgical resection of tumor is not performed, as in the present case, the prognosis can be extremely poor.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We previously reported that granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) plays a critical role in ovulation, suggesting that neutrophils may maintain ovulation. We assessed myeloperoxidase (MPO), a major and specific enzyme of neutrophils, in women with abnormal and normal menstrual cycles to clarify the relationship between MPO and ovulation. METHODS We analyzed MPO activity in blood neutrophils of women with abnormal menstrual cycles (indicative of anovulation, n = 12) and age- and body mass index-matched normal menstrual cycles (indicative of ovulation, n = 24) using two parameters as a marker of MPO, Neut X and mean peroxidase index (MPXI). RESULTS MPO of women with abnormal menstrual cycles was significantly lower than that of women with normal menstrual cycles [Neut X: 62.6 ± 1.1 (mean ± standard error of the mean) vs. 66.2 ± 0.3, P = 0.009; MPXI: -0.54 ± 1.66 vs. 4.91 ± 0.53, P = 0.008]. Among women with normal menstrual cycles, MPO was highest in the follicular phase (Neut X: 67.0 ± 0.3; P = 0.033). CONCLUSION The difference in MPO between women with abnormal and normal menstrual cycles and the upregulation of MPO before ovulation suggest that neutrophils and MPO are closely related to ovulation.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine hyaluronan (HA) metabolism in relation to the onset and progression of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) induced by mechanical overloading. Two-month-old and 6-month-old C57BL/6N mice were divided into experimental and untreated control groups (n = 5/group). A sliding plate was attached to the maxillary incisors of the experimental mice for 10 days to overload the condylar cartilage in TMJ. In experimental group, profound cartilage degradation was detected in haematoxylin-eosin, Safranin-O-Fast Green-stained sections. It was also shown that the cartilage degradation was greater in older mice in both the control and the experimental groups. The number of HABP-positive cells was decreased by mechanical overloading and with age. The reduction of HA expression was correlated with the progression of cartilage degradation induced by mechanical overloading. The absolute quantification of the mRNA expression related to HA synthesis and HA degradation was also performed in each group. The mRNA expression levels of HA synthase (HAS) 2 and 3 were lower in the experimental group compared with the control group in the younger mice. In contrast, the mRNA expression levels of the HA degradation gene, HYAL2 and KIAA1199, were higher in the experimental group compared with the control group in the older mice. Thus, mechanical overload differently affected the balance of HA degradation and HA synthesis in the older and younger mice, respectively. In conclusion, mechanical overloading affects HA metabolism and it might initiate or amplify the condylar cartilage degradation.
