Abstract
γ-Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticles were coated with a Cu shell in situ during synthesis. An interfacial monolayer of CuO in the Cu-coated γ-Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticles was discovered that stabilized the disordered surface spins of γ-Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticles. Element-specific x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the L-edges for Cu and Fe indicated the magnetic moment of the Cu in the shell interacted with the γ-Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticle's surface magnetic moments. This exchange interaction between the Fe and Cu at the interface permitted an overall Cu moment in CuO (an antiferromagnet typically) that altered the γ-Fe(2)O(3) nanomagnetism. Increasing the Cu shell thickness also increased the total Fe magnetism of the nanoparticles.

Abstract
Cloned rabbits have been produced for many years by somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). The efficiency of cloning by SCNT, however, has remained extremely low. Most cloned embryos degenerate in utero, and the few that develop to term show a high incidence of post-natal death and abnormalities. The cell type used for donor nuclei is an important factor in nuclear transfer (NT). As reported previously, NT embryos reconstructed with fresh cumulus cells (CC-embryos) have better developmental potential than those reconstructed with foetal fibroblasts (FF-embryos) in vivo and in vitro. The reason for this disparity in developmental capacity is still unknown. In this study, we compared active demethylation levels and morphological changes between the nuclei of CC-embryos and FF-embryos shortly after activation. Anti-5-methylcytosine immunofluorescence of in vivo-fertilized and cloned rabbit embryos revealed that there was no detectable active demethylation in rabbit zygotes or NT-embryos derived from either fibroblasts or CC. In the process of nuclear remodelling, however, the proportion of nuclei with abnormal appearance in FF-embryos was significantly higher than that in CC-embryos during the first cell cycle. Our study demonstrates that the nuclear remodelling abnormality of cloned rabbit embryos may be one important factor for the disparity in developmental success between CC-embryos and FF-embryos.

Abstract
Double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) cannot protect gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in the presence of NaCl, and dsDNA interacted with adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to form stable G-quartet and a single-stranded DNA (DNA 2) that can protect AuNPs. The unprotected AuNPs were aggregated to AuNP aggregations (AuNPA) that exhibited a resonance scattering (RS) peak at 590 nm. The RS intensity at 590 nm decreased linearly when the ATP concentration increased in the range of 6.6-110 nM. The catalysis of AuNP-DNA 2 was stronger than that of the AuNPA on the glucose-Cu(II) particle reaction, and the product appeared as an RS peak at 620 nm. When the ATP concentration was increased, the AuNP-DNA 2 increased, and the RS intensity at 620 nm increased linearly. The increased RS intensity (ΔI(620 nm)) was linear to ATP concentration in the range of 2.2-220 nM, with a regression equation of ΔI(620 nm) = 0.709C + 7.7, and a detection limit of 0.5 nM. Hereby, a new RS method of ATP detection was set up with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Abstract
Myostatin is expressed in skeletal muscle tissue where it functions to suppress myoblast proliferation and myofiber hypertrophy. Recently, myostatin was detected in the tendon, mammary gland, and adipose tissue of mice. We sought to determine whether myostatin is expressed in the liver, spleen, lung, and kidney of pigs. Real-time PCR and Western blots demonstrated that myostatin, follistatin, decorin, and activin receptor IIB (ActRIIB) mRNA and proteins were expressed in skeletal muscle, heart muscle, and adipose tissue, and also in liver, spleen, lung, kidney, and cultured fibroblasts. The relative abundance of myostatin was closely related to follistatin and decorin in porcine tissues. Immunohistochemical analysis further demonstrated the presence of myostatin, follistatin, and decorin in the skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, heart muscle, liver, spleen, lung, and kidney of pigs. These results suggest that myostatin could be associated with certain functions of the internal organs, such as energy metabolism or fibrosis. We conclude that myostatin is a factor broadly expressed in the internal organs and muscle tissues of pigs.

Abstract
The aptamer (ssDNA) was used to label nanogold (NG) particle to fabricate an aptamer-nanogold (NGssDNA) probe for melamine. The probe was stabile in pH 6.6 Na(2)HPO(4)-NaH(2)PO(4) buffer solutions and in the presence of high concentration of electrolyte. Upon addition of melamine, it interacted with the probe to form big NGssDNA-melamine aggregations that led to the resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) intensity at 566 nm increased greatly. The increased RRS intensity (ΔI) is linear to melamine concentration in the range of 1.89-81.98 μg/L, with a detection limit of 0.98 μg/L melamine. The unreacted probe in the aptamer reaction solution exhibited strong catalytic effect on the slow Cu(2)O particle reaction between glucose and Fehling reagent, but the catalytic activity of NG aggregations is very weak. When melamine concentration increased, the unreacted probe decreased, the RRS peak intensity at 614 nm decreased. The decreased RS intensity is linear to melamine concentration in the range of 0.63-47.30 ng/L melamine, with a detection limit of 0.38 ng/L. The aptamer-modified nanogold catalytic RRS assay was applied to determination of melamine in milk, with high sensitivity and selectivity, simplicity and rapidity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Animal studies have shown that regional anaesthesia and analgesia may prevent or attenuate the surgical stress response by preserving immune function and result in better long-term outcome. We have tested the hypothesis that patients with ovarian serous adenocarcinoma who had surgery with epidural anaesthesia and analgesia would have better long-term outcome than those who were given general anaesthesia (GA) and i.v. opioid analgesia. METHODS A retrospective review of medical records identified 143 patients with ovarian serous adenocarcinoma who underwent surgery between January 1994 and October 2006 at the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center. Data in the analysis included age, anaesthesia-analgesia technique, ASA status, blood loss, transfusion, duration of surgery, status of preoperative cancer antigen 125, tumour size, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage, histological grade, lymph node status, residual macroscopic tumour, and chemotherapy. Survival analysis was made with the main outcome measure of death. RESULTS The 3- and 5-yr overall survival rates were 78% and 61% in the patient group who received epidural anaesthesia and analgesia (Group E, n=106), and 58% and 49% in the patient group who received GA and i.v. opioid analgesia (Group G, n=37), respectively. After adjusting for the other variables, Group G had a hazard ratio of 1.214 (P=0.043) in a multivariable Cox regression model compared with Group E. CONCLUSIONS This retrospective analysis suggests that epidural anaesthesia and analgesia for ovarian serous adenocarcinoma surgery may reduce mortality during the initial years of follow-up.

Abstract
The Sloping Land Conversion Program (also known as "Grain for Green" or the Upland Conversion Program) for converting cropland to forest is one of China's most ambitious environmental initiatives, and is one of the world's largest land-conservation programs with a budget of RMB 337 billion (over US$ 40 billion). Although environmental impacts have played a vital role in the general reasoning and argumentation for forest plantations, environmental impact analyses have often received less attention than economic analyses in the planning of plantation forestry projects. The overall goal of this paper is to evaluate the program's environmental impact considering the farmer's interests and the potential social benefits due to carbon sequestration in different scenarios based on household and field survey data in Dunhua County. Our findings are that: (1) in many cases, the program did not give adequate consideration to land productivity and environmental heterogeneity when selecting plots; (2) more than half of the reforestation plots were on flat cropland (slopes of less than 5 degrees ); (3) in five of the eight townships, net incomes on reforested land were substantially above or below previous crop incomes, raising questions about the efficiency of the allocation of compensation to farmers participating in the program; (4) the potential carbon co-benefit increased the NPV of the program by 5954-7009 RMB/ha. In conclusion, we recommend that more attention should be paid to the quality of reforestation programs rather than just their scale and note that consideration of potential carbon sequestration co-benefits enhances the benefits of cropland conversion programs.

Abstract
The size and specific shape of bone grafts are important for jaw reconstruction. In this experiment, segmental bone grafts were engineered in a predetermined shape via seeding osteoblast precursor cells into titanium mesh-coral composite scaffolds. Titanium meshes were moulded into the shape of a column with length 12 mm and diameter 8mm. The column was filled with natural coral granules and the complex acted as a cell-seeding scaffold. About 4 x 10(7) osteoblast precursor cells in 200 microl cell-culture medium were seeded into each of six scaffolds and incubated in vitro for 2 days. Then, the composites were implanted subcutaneously into the backs of nude mice and incubated in vivo. Two months after implantation, the animals were killed and new bone formed in the scaffolds was investigated by gross inspection, X-ray examination, histological observation and mechanical testing. The results showed that newly formed tissue was red and presented the gross appearance of bone, and kept the original shape of the column. Titanium mesh was situated on the surface of the bone graft. An X-ray blocking shadow was observed in and around the titanium scaffolds; most of the coral granules had been absorbed. Histological observation demonstrated a large amount of new bone formed and integrated well with titanium mesh. Mechanical testing showed that new bone improved the mechanical property of the graft significantly. In conclusion, a titanium mesh-coral composite scaffold with osteoblast precursor cells is an efficient means to engineer segmental bone, possessing the desired shape and mechanical strength.

Abstract
A Ni80Fe20/(Ni,Fe)O thin film exhibits a positive exchange bias when cooled in a zero field and a negative exchange bias when field cooled. With transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectrometry, the composition and magnetic structure has been ascertained and a distribution of magnetization easy axes about the interface extrapolated. The results indicate that the positive exchange bias is from antiferromagnetic interface moments perpendicular to their ferromagnetic counterparts. With field cooling the alignment is put into a parallel configuration resulting in a negative exchange bias.

Abstract
We have investigated the structural and magnetic properties of ion-beam deposited polycrystalline NiFe (25 nm)/Fe-oxide (35 nm) bilayers. A film prepared with an assist beam O2 to Ar gas ratio of 0% during deposition had a bottom layer that consisted of pure b.c.c. Fe (a = 2.87 A) whereas films prepared with 19%O2/Ar and 35%O2/Ar had either Fe3O4 (a = 8.47 angstroms) or alpha-Fe2O3 (a = 5.04 angstroms, c = 13.86 angstroms) bottom layers, respectively. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy revealed a smooth interface between the top nano-columnar NiFe and bottom nano-columnar Fe-oxide layer for all films. At room temperature, the observed coercivity (Hc approximately 25 Oe) for a film prepared with 19% O2/Ar indicates the existence of a magnetically hard ferrimagnetic Fe3O4 phase that is enhancing the plain NiFe (Hc approximately 2 Oe) by way of exchange coupling. A significant amount of exchange bias is observed below 50 K, and at 10 K the size of exchange bias hysteresis loops shift increases with increasing oxygen in the films. Furthermore, the strongest exchange coupling (H(ex) approximately 135 Oe at 10 K) is with alpha-Fe2O3 (35% O2/Ar) as the bottom film layer. This indicates that the pure antiferromagnetic phases work better than ferrimagnetic phases when in contact with ferromagnetic NiFe. H(ex) (T) is well described by an effective AF domain wall energy that creates an exchange field with a (1 - T/T(crit)) temperature dependence. Hc (T) exhibits three distinct regimes of constant temperature that may indicate the existence of different AF spin populations that couple to the FM layer at different temperatures.

Abstract
The Indian government has a national tuberculosis (TB) plan based on DOTS recommendations. The private health sector plays an increasing role in health care provision in India, and a public-private mix (PPM) project has been introduced to standardise TB diagnosis and treatment methods in Kerala, India. This study interviewed 45 private practitioners (PPs) to evaluate diagnostic, treatment and reporting practices, of whom 80% diagnose with sputum microscopy and 43% treat all of their patients according to the treatment regimens recommended by the DOTS strategy. This study demonstrates that the current management of TB by private practitioners in Kerala is still in need of improvement.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to investigate the difference in developmental process of gastric slow waves and the effects of feeding in pre-term and full-term infants. Twenty-six pre-term and 31 full-term infants were enrolled in the study. Gastric myoelectrical activity was recorded using electrogastrography (EGG) from birth to month 6. An increase in the % of 2-4 cpm slow waves was noted in both pre-term (P < 0.01) and full-term infants (P < 0.04) from birth to month 4. The pre-term infants showed a reduced dominant EGG power at certain points of the study. (3) Breast or formula feeding resulted in no difference in the EGG in the full-term infants and showed a difference in the postprandial dominant power of the EGG in the pre-term infants only at month 2 after birth (P < 0.05) but not at other times. The gastric slow wave in pre-term infants is of a significantly reduced amplitude but similar rhythmicity. The method of feeding has no effects on the EGG in full-term infants and minimal effects (may be of non-clinical significance) on the EGG in pre-term infants as the difference was noted only at one time point during the 6-month follow-up study.

Abstract
Unlike braided fabrics, knitted scaffolds have been proven to favor deposition of collagenous connective tissue matrix, which is crucial for tendon/ligament reconstruction. But cell seeding of such scaffolds often requires a gel system, which is unstable in a dynamic situation, especially in the knee joint. This study developed a novel, biodegradable nano-microfibrous polymer scaffold by electrospinning PLGA nanofibers onto a knitted PLGA scaffold in order to provide a large biomimetic surface for cell attachment. Porcine bone marrow stromal cells were seeded onto either the novel scaffolds by pipetting a cell suspension (Group I) or the knitted PLGA scaffolds by immobilizing in fibrin gel (Group II). Cell attachment at 36 hours, cell proliferation and extracellular matrix synthesis at 1 week, and mechanical properties over 2 weeks were investigated. Cell attachment was comparable and cell proliferation was faster in Group I. Moreover, cellular function was more actively exhibited in Group I, as evident by the higher expression of collagen I, decorin, and biglycan genes. Thus, this novel scaffold, facilitating cell seeding and promoting cell proliferation, function, and differentiation, could be applied with promise in tissue engineering of tendon/ligament.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is known that tachygastria is associated with gastric hypomotility and retrograde gastric electrical stimulation (RGES) delays gastric emptying and is proposed for treating obesity. The aim was to investigate the effects and mechanisms of RGES on postprandial antral contraction in dogs. METHODS Seven dogs were implanted with a gastric cannula and three pairs of gastric serosal electrodes. Antral contractions and gastric myoelectrical activity were recorded immediately after a solid meal, with or without RGES, or with GES on the corpus, or with RGES under administration of propranolol. The stimulus was composed of long pulses with a tachygastrial frequency. RESULTS (i) GES at the tachygastrial frequency impaired gastric myoelectrical activity and induced tachygastria (anovaP<0.05). (ii) GES at the tachygastrial frequency suppressed antral contractions (anovaP<0.01) and the effect was stronger with retrograde stimulation than forward stimulation (P<0.05). (iii) GES-induced tachygastria was correlated with antral hypomotility (r=-0.60, P=0.01). (iv) Propranolol and phentolamine abolished GES-induced tachygastria and antral hypomotility. CONCLUSIONS Long-pulse RGES at a tachygastrial frequency suppresses postprandial antral contractions, which is attributed to an induction of tachygastria via the alpha- and beta-adrenergic pathway.

Abstract
AIM The aim was to investigate the validity of sonometry on the assessment of gastric volumes in comparison with gastric barostat. METHOD Six dogs were implanted with gastric serosal electrodes, sonometric sensors, and a gastric cannula. Experiments were performed to assess sensor distance when an intragastric balloon was inflated with different volumes, after a meal with or without a balloon, and with gastric electrical stimulation. RESULTS (i) The distance measured using sonometry was reproducible and stable, and there was a correlation between sensor distance and the gastric volume measured with barostat. (ii) Simultaneous recordings by sonometry and barostat showed a similar postprandial response, while the postprandial increase of the sensor distance was much smaller without the balloon (3.2+/-0.2 mm vs 9.7+/-1.5 mm, P<0.02). (iii) The sensor distance was increased with gastric electrical stimulation. CONCLUSIONS Sonometry is able to detect gastric volume changes as validated by gastric perturbations with distensions, food ingestion and electrical stimulation. The postprandial increase in gastric volume measured by sonometry with barostat balloon is greater because of the presence of the intragastric balloon.

Abstract
Acupuncture has been practiced empirically in China for several millennia, and is being increasingly accepted by practitioners and patients worldwide. Functional gastrointestinal disorders are common in clinical gastroenterology. The prevalence of one or more functional gastrointestinal disorders is estimated to be as high as 70% in general population using Rome diagnostic criteria. Since functional gastrointestinal disorders are diagnosed based on symptoms and the exact aetiologies for most of functional gastrointestinal disorders are not completely known, it is not unusual that the treatment for these disorders is unsatisfactory and alternative therapies are attractive to both patients and practitioners. During the latest decades, a considerable number of studies have been performed on acupuncture for the treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders and underlying mechanisms. In this article, we reviewed available data in the literature on the applications and mechanisms of acupuncture for the treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders, including functional oesophageal disorders, nausea and vomiting, functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, etc. A summary is provided based on the quality and quantity of published studies regarding the efficacy of acupuncture in treating these various disorders. In addition, the methodology of acupuncture is also introduced.
