Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this population-based study is to examine the adverse events (AE) associated with longitudinal systemic glucocorticoid (GC) use among an ethnic Chinese systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) cohort. METHODS Our study subjects were patients with newly diagnosed SLE aged 18 and older who received at least 1 prescription of systemic GC between 2001 and 2012 from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). The earliest prescription date of systemic GC for each subject was defined as the index date. For each subject, we calculated the average prednisolone-equivalent dose and the medication possession ratio (MPR) of GC use every 90 days for each patient after the index date. Patients with a diagnosis of AE (defined by the International Classification of Diseases-9-Clinical Modification diagnosis code) during the followup were also identified from the NHIRD. Generalized estimating equations adjusted for propensity score were applied to examine the association between longitudinal GC use and risks of prespecified AE (musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, ophthalmologic, infectious, cardiovascular, neuropsychiatric, metabolic, and dermatologic diseases). RESULTS We identified 11,288 patients with SLE (mean followup: 6.28 yrs). Higher doses and higher MPR of GC were associated with increased risk of osteonecrosis [adjusted OR (aOR) 2.87-9.09]. Similar results were found regarding the risk of osteoporosis (aOR 1.71-3.67), bacterial infection (aOR 2.12-3.89), Cushingoid syndrome (aOR 6.51-62.03), and sleep disorder (aOR 1.42-3.59). CONCLUSION To our knowledge, this is the first study to show that the dose and intensity of longitudinal use of GC were both associated with risk of AE among a nationwide Asian SLE cohort.

Abstract
Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) play an essential role in metastasis. However, what enables TAMs to have a superior capacity to establish pre-metastatic microenvironment in distant organs is unclear. Here we have begun to uncover the effects of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 4A in TAMs on lung pre-metastatic niche formation and metastasis. CYP4A+ TAM infiltration was positively associated with metastasis, pre-metastatic niche formation and poor prognosis in breast cancer patients. The pharmacological inhibition of CYP4A reduced lung pre-metastatic niche formation (evidenced by a decrease in vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 1 positive (VEGFR1+) myeloid cell recruitment and pro-metastatic protein expression) and metastatic burden, accompanied with TAM polarization away from the M2 phenotype in spontaneous metastasis models of 4T1 breast cancer and B16F10 melanoma. Co-implantation of 4T1 cells with CYP4A10high macrophages promoted lung pre-metastatic niche formation and metastasis. Depletion of TAMs disrupted lung pre-metastatic niches and thereby prevented metastasis. Treatment with the CM from CYP4A10high M2 macrophages (M2) increased pre-metastatic niche formation and metastatic burden in the lungs, whereas CYP4A inhibition attenuated these effects. In vitro TAM polarization away from the M2 phenotype induced by CYP4A inhibition decreased VEGFR1+ myeloid cell migration and fibronectin expression, accompanied with downregulation of STAT3 signaling. Conversely, overexpression of CYP4A or exogenous addition of 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid promoted M2 polarization and cytokine production of macrophages and thereby enhanced migration of VEGFR1+ myeloid cells, which were reversed by siRNA or pharmacological inhibition of STAT3. Importantly, a combined blocking M2 macrophage-derived factors TGF-β, VEGF and SDF-1 abolished VEGFR1+ myeloid cell migration and fibroblast activation induced by CYP4A. In summary, CYP4A in TAMs is crucial for lung pre-metastatic niche formation and metastasis, and may serve as a potential therapeutic target in human cancer.

Abstract
Fruit ripening is a complex developmental process, the details of which remain largely unknown in fleshy fruits. In this paper, the fruit flesh of two peach varieties, "Zhongyou9" (a nectarine; Prunus persica L. Batsch) and its mutant "Hongyu", was analyzed by RNA-seq technology during two stages of ripening at 20-day intervals. One hundred and eighty significant upregulated and two hundred and thirty-five downregulated genes were identified in the experiment. Many of these genes were related to plant hormones, chlorophyll breakdown, accumulation of aroma and flavor volatiles, and stress. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first transcriptome analysis of peach ripening, and our data will be useful for further studies of the molecular basis of fruit ripening.

Abstract
Galectin-3, a chimeric type β-galactoside-binding protein, is known to modulate viral infection; however, its role in enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection has not been investigated. We generated galectin-3 null rhabdomyosarcoma (RD) cells and evaluated whether EV71 infection would be affected. In galectin-3 null cells, the released and intracellular EV71 viral loads were suppressed after 24 h of infection, and cell death rates were significantly lower, while cell proliferation remained unaltered. In addition, RD cells expressing a nonsynonymous genetic variant of galectin-3, rs4644 (LGALS3 +191C/A, P64H), produced lower virus titers than those with wild-type galectin-3 (C allele). To clarify whether the in vitro viral load reduction correlates with clinical severity, we enrolled children with laboratory-confirmed EV71 infection. Since hyperglycemia is an indicator of severe EV71 infection in children, 152 of 401 enrolled children had glucose examinations at admission, and 59 subjects had serum glucose levels ≥ 150 mg/dL. In comparison to the rs4644 AA genotype (2.2 ± 0.06 log10 mg/dL), serum glucose levels during EV71 infection were higher in patients with CC (2.4 ± 0.17 log10 mg/dL, p = 0.03) and CA (2.4 ± 0.15 log10 mg/dL, p = 0.02) genotypes, respectively. These findings suggest that the rs4644 AA genotype of galectin-3 might exert a protective effect. In summary, galectin-3 affects EV71 replication in our cellular model and its variant, rs4644, is associated with hyperglycemia in the clinical setting. The underlying mechanism and its potential therapeutic application warrant further investigation.

Abstract
Parameters such as the intensity of conditioned and unconditioned stimuli, the inter-trial interval, and starvation time can influence learning. In this study, the parameters that govern aversive learning in the oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis, a serious pest of fruits and vegetables, were examined. Male flies were trained to associate the attractive odorant methyl eugenol, a male lure, with a food punishment, sodium chloride solution, and the conditioned suppression of the proboscis-extension response was investigated. We found that high methyl eugenol concentrations support a stronger association. With increasing concentrations of sodium chloride solution, a steady decrease of proboscis-extension response during six training trials was observed. A high level of learning was achieved with an inter-trial interval of 1-10 min. However, extending the inter-trial interval to 15 min led to reduced learning. No effect of physiological status (starvation time) on learning performance was detected, nor was any non-associative learning effect induced by the repeat presentation of odor or punishment alone. The memory formed after six training trials could be retained for at least 3 h. Our results indicate that aversive learning by oriental fruit flies can be affected by odor, punishment concentration and inter-trial interval.

Abstract
Galectin-7, a member of the β-galactoside-binding protein family, is primarily expressed in stratified epithelial cells, including keratinocytes. There is information in the literature suggesting a role for this protein in regulation of keratinocyte survival and growth, but the underlying mechanism remains relatively unknown. Moreover, its expression pattern in the epidermis suggests that it is also involved in the regulation of keratinocyte differentiation. Here, we demonstrate that galectin-7 knockdown results in reduced differentiation and increased proliferation of keratinocytes. Using microarray and deep-sequencing analyses, we found that galectin-7 positively and negatively regulates microRNA (miR)-203 and miR-146a expression, respectively. We show that galectin-7 regulates keratinocyte differentiation and proliferation through miR-203 but not miR-146a. A knockdown of either galectin-7 or miR-203 in keratinocytes increases expression of p63, an essential transcription factor involved in skin development. Rescue of miR-203 expression in a galectin-7 knockdown model reduces p63 expression to baseline. Increased galectin-7 expression upregulates c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) protein levels, which is required for miR-203 expression. Finally, we establish that galectin-7 can be associated with JNK1 and protect it from ubiquitination and degradation. Thus, our data suggest an intracellular function of galectin-7: regulation of keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation through the JNK1-miR-203-p63 pathway.

Abstract
Chromosome instability is a common feature of tumor cells, and may be an important mechanism in tumor formation. Nuclear division cycle 80 (NDC80) is closely associated with the stability of chromosomes. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between NDC80 and development of colon cancer using a range of methods. Western blotting and immunohistochemistry were employed to determine the expression of this protein in different colon cells and tissues, cell proliferation was measured with an MTT assay, levels of proliferating cell nuclear antigen were examined by immunofluorescence, and cell migration was observed using wound healing tests. Our results showed that the expression of NDC80 in colon cancer cells (CACO2, HCT8, HCT116, and SW480) and tissues (from 20 patients) was higher than that in controls. Moreover, cell proliferation and migration rates were elevated in cells transfected with NDC80 compared to control groups. In summary, NDC80 promotes the proliferation and metastasis of colon cancer cells, and may constitute a new target for gene therapy in treating this disease. Combined with clinicopathological grading, measurement of positive NDC80 expression may be helpful in diagnosing and estimating the prognosis of colon cancer patients.

Abstract
We study the effective nonlinear optical properties of composite media in which identical nonlinear nanospheres are randomly embedded in the linear host medium. In the weakly-nonlinear case, we aim at the effective linear permittivity and effective third-order nonlinear susceptibility with effective medium theory combined with the linear Mie theory. We show that large enhancement of optical nonlinear susceptibility can be achieved at the surface plasmon resonant wavelength, which can be tuned by changing the size of nanoparticles. Our numerical results are compared with those in the quasistatic limit or/and from Comsol simulations, good agreement is found. In the strong-nonlinear case, based on nonlinear Mie theory and self-consistent mean-field method, we study the optical bistability of the composite media. The optical bistability and tristability are found, and the bistable threshold fields are found to be strongly dependent on the sizes of nanoparticles and the incident wavelength. Such nonlinear nanocomposites with large optical nonlinearity and tunable bistable behavior are envisioned for use as nonlinear optical nanodevices such as optical nanoswitches, optical nanomemories and so on.

Abstract
Although initial serum albumin level is highly associated with overall and cardiovascular mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, we consider that the dynamic change and trend of albumin after initiation of PD are also essential.We enrolled patients who received PD for more than 3 months from January 1999 to March 2014. We categorized these patients into 2 groups by the difference in serum albumin level (Δalbumin = difference between peak with initial albumin level = peak albumin level - initial albumin level) after PD. The patients with Δalbumin < 0.2 g/dL (median level) were considered as group A (n, number = 238) and those with Δalbumin ≥ 0.2 g/dL were considered as group B (n = 278). Further, we stratified these patients into quartiles: Q1 Δalbumin < -0.2 g/dL; Q2, -0.2 ≦∼ <0.2 g/dL; Q3, 0.2 ≦∼ <0.6 g/dL; and Q4, ≥0.6 g/dL. Regression analysis was performed to determine the correlation of initial albumin and Δalbumin.Group A patients presented with higher levels of serum albumin (3.71 ± 0.54 vs 3.04 ± 0.55 g/dL; P < 0.001) and hematocrit as well as better initial residual renal function. However, those in group A had lower serum albumin increment and downward-sloped trends after dialysis. In contrast, the albumin trend was upward sloped and the increment of albumin was remarkable in group B, despite the high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Overtime, group A patients had poorer survival and experienced more frequent and longer hospitalizations. Group Q1 patients with least albumin increment had worst survival. Group Q4 patients with lowest initial albumin also had poor survival. Age, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, BMI, initial albumin, and Δalbumin could affect patient outcomes independently. Regression analysis showed a better outcome can be obtained if the initial albumin level is at least above 3.15 g/dL. (Initial albumin level = -0.61 × Δalbumin + 3.50.)The increment and trend of albumin especially during early period of PD may be a more crucial determinant for survival.

Abstract
Worldwide, some 240 million people have chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV), with the highest rates of infection in Africa and Asia. Our understanding of the natural history of HBV infection and the potential for therapy of the resultant disease is continuously improving. New data have become available since the previous APASL guidelines for management of HBV infection were published in 2012. The objective of this manuscript is to update the recommendations for the optimal management of chronic HBV infection. The 2015 guidelines were developed by a panel of Asian experts chosen by the APASL. The clinical practice guidelines are based on evidence from existing publications or, if evidence was unavailable, on the experts' personal experience and opinion after deliberations. Manuscripts and abstracts of important meetings published through January 2015 have been evaluated. This guideline covers the full spectrum of care of patients infected with hepatitis B, including new terminology, natural history, screening, vaccination, counseling, diagnosis, assessment of the stage of liver disease, the indications, timing, choice and duration of single or combination of antiviral drugs, screening for HCC, management in special situations like childhood, pregnancy, coinfections, renal impairment and pre- and post-liver transplant, and policy guidelines. However, areas of uncertainty still exist, and clinicians, patients, and public health authorities must therefore continue to make choices on the basis of the evolving evidence. The final clinical practice guidelines and recommendations are presented here, along with the relevant background information.

Abstract
Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is considered to be the main pathogen in PC-associated diseases, and significantly affects the global pig-producing industry. PCV2 continuously evolves by point mutations and genome recombinations. In the present study, we aimed to further identify recombinant PCV2 strains. We used polymerase chain reaction to detect PCV2 in the carcasses of pigs with suspected infections from different regions of Guangdong Province in China. DNA was extracted from samples with confirmed infection and full- genome amplification, sequencing, phylogenetic tree construction, gene recombination detection, and sequence alignment were performed in gene recombination analysis. Our results show that recombination occurred between the strains SHC (DQ104421) and ZhuJi2003 (AY579893). The recombination resulted in three recombinants: GD003 (KM503044), GD005 (KM487708), and GD008 (KM487709). Further analyses revealed that these novel recombinants appeared to result from recombination between the PCV2a and PCV2b strains, with crossover regions located in ORF2. This study was a comprehensive analysis that used several different methods, which demonstrated that a cluster of PCV2 strains resulted from the same type of inter-genotypic recombination pattern, with a breakpoint in the structural protein coding region. The results of our study provide both information on the recombination mechanism and disease pathogenesis and useful data for the prevention of PCV2 in the swine industry.

Abstract
RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Molecular targeted drugs (MTD), gefitinib and erlotinib, have been proven to provide clinical benefits to advanced stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Therefore, access to such medical innovations in time is critical for patients with the right indications. The aim of this study was to explore determinants of the adoption of MTD among NSCLC patients under Taiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI) system. METHODS Using Taiwan's Longitudinal Health Insurance Database and Cancer Registry database as the data source, we identified 1555 newly diagnosed NSCLC patients who started their cancer treatment between 2004 and 2009. Patients were categorized into 'non-MTD' and 'MTD' groups based on the cancer treatment they received. Hierarchical logistic regression was used to explore potential determinants associated with the adoption of MTD by adjusting for patient-, disease-, doctor-, hospital-level characteristics and changes of reimbursement schemes. RESULTS During the study period, 562 (36%) NSCLC patients were classified as the 'MTD group and 993 (64%) patients were the 'non-MTD' group. Hierarchical logistic regression model showed that the elderly were less likely to receive MTD (OR = 0.41; 95% CI: 0.28-0.60). In contrast, patients whose cancer type was adenocarcinoma (OR = 2.99; 95% CI: 2.09-4.26) were more likely to receive MTD. Those who went to private hospitals (OR = 1.75; 95% CI: 1.01-3.03) and hospitals with higher economic scale (OR = 3.00; 95% CI: 1.72-5.25) were more likely to receive MTD as well. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that both patient- and hospital-level characteristics significantly affected the adoption of MTD among NSCLC patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Long-term health and economic consequences of diabetes mellitus are of significant importance to health policy makers to identify the most efficient interventions for disease managements. However, existing data are mainly from simulation models instead of "real-world" data. The objective of this study was to longitudinally evaluate the changes of prevalence of diabetic complications and associated healthcare costs in a nationally-representative diabetic cohort. METHODS We used the 2000-2011 Taiwan's Longitudinal Health Insurance Database (LHID) to conduct a population-based cohort study of 136,372 patients with type 2 diabetes. Diabetic complications of each patient were calculated annually after the cohort entry by the adapted Diabetes Complications Severity Index (aDCSI) score (sum of diabetic complication with severity levels, range 0-13) using diagnostic codes recorded in the LHID. Study subjects were further categorized into six subgroups according to their aDCSI score (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5+) at cohort entry. Healthcare utilizations (including outpatient and inpatient visits) as well as direct medical costs for the six subgroups were estimated annually using patient-level data from the LHID. RESULTS We found the severity of diabetic complications increased over time, especially for patients with aDCSI score of 2 and above at cohort entry (at 10years of follow-up: aDCSI=0 (cohort entry), 2.37; aDCSI=1, 3.59; aDCSI=2, 4.60; aDCSI=3, 5.14; aDCSI=4, 5.96). There were significant differences in healthcare utilizations and associated medical costs among patients stratified by aDCSI score (e.g. at 1year after cohort entry, mean counts of inpatient visits: 0.14 vs. 1.81 for aDCSI=0 vs.5+). Relatively high healthcare utilizations and associated medical costs in the first year of cohort entry were observed for patients with aDCSI score of 4 and above at cohort entry. CONCLUSIONS We provided the important empirical data for patient-level longitudinal changes in diabetic complications and associated healthcare utilization and medical costs among patients with diabetes.

Abstract
The ordered bicontinuous double diamond (OBDD) structure has long been believed to be an unstable ordered network nanostructure, which is relative to the ordered bicontinuous double gyroid (OBDG) structure for diblock copolymers. Using electron tomography, we present the first real-space observation of the thermodynamically stable OBDD structure in a diblock copolymer composed of a stereoregular block, syndiotactic polypropylene-block-polystyrene (sPP-b-PS), in which the sPP tetrapods are interconnected via a bicontinuous network with Pn3̄m symmetry. The OBDD structure underwent a thermally reversible order-order transition (OOT) to OBDG upon heating, and the transition was accompanied with a slight reduction of domain spacing, as demonstrated both experimentally and theoretically. The thermodynamic stability of the OBDD structure was attributed to the ability of the configurationally regular sPP block to form helical segments, even above its melting point, as the reduction of internal energy associated with the helix formation may effectively compensate the greater packing frustration in OBDD relative to that in the tripods of OBDG.

Abstract
In hepatitis B virus (HBV)-replicating hepatocytes, miR-130a expression was significantly reduced. In a reciprocal manner, miR-130a reduced HBV replication by targeting at two major metabolic regulators PGC1α and PPARγ, both of which can potently stimulate HBV replication. We proposed a positive feed-forward loop between HBV, miR-130a, PPARγ, and PGC1α. Accordingly, HBV can significantly enhance viral replication by reducing miR-130a and increasing PGC1α and PPARγ. NF-κB/p65 can strongly stimulate miR-130a promoter, while miR-130a can promote NF-κB/p65 protein level by reducing PPARγ and thus NF-κB/p65 protein degradation. We postulated another positive feed-forward loop between miR-130a and NF-κB/p65 via PPARγ. During liver inflammation, NF-κB signaling could contribute to viral clearance via its positive effect on miR-130a transcription. Conversely, in asymptomatic HBV carriers, persistent viral infection could reduce miR-130a and NF-κB expression, leading to dampened inflammation and immune tolerance. Finally, miR-130a could contribute to metabolic homeostasis by dual targeting PGC1α and PPARγ simultaneously.

Abstract
Donor T lymphocyte transfer with hematopoietic stem cells suppresses residual tumor growth (graft-versus-tumor [GVT]) in cancer patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation (BMT). However, donor T cell reactivity to host organs causes severe and potentially lethal inflammation called graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). High-dose steroids or other immunosuppressive drugs are used to treat GVHD that have limited ability to control the inflammation while incurring long-term toxicity. Novel strategies are needed to modulate GVHD, preserve GVT, and improve the outcome of BMT. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) control alloantigen-sensitized inflammation of GVHD, sustain GVT, and prevent mortality in BMT. Helminths colonizing the alimentary tract dramatically increase the Treg activity, thereby modulating intestinal or systemic inflammatory responses. These observations led us to hypothesize that helminths can regulate GVHD and maintain GVT in mice. Acute GVHD was induced in helminth (Heligmosomoides polygyrus)-infected or uninfected BALB/c recipients of C57BL/6 donor grafts. Helminth infection suppressed donor T cell inflammatory cytokine generation and reduced GVHD-related mortality, but maintained GVT. H. polygyrus colonization promoted the survival of TGF-β-generating recipient Tregs after a conditioning regimen with total body irradiation and led to a TGF-β-dependent in vivo expansion/maturation of donor Tregs after BMT. Helminths did not control GVHD when T cells unresponsive to TGF-β-mediated immune regulation were used as donor T lymphocytes. These results suggest that helminths suppress acute GVHD using Tregs and TGF-β-dependent pathways in mice. Helminthic regulation of GVHD and GVT through intestinal immune conditioning may improve the outcome of BMT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to test the validity of adapted Diabetes Complication Severity Index (aDCSI) in predicting the risk of hospitalization and healthcare cost in type 2 diabetic patients using a nationally-representative claims database. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective cohort study used 4years of claims data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). METHODS Type 2 diabetic patients who had 4-years of enrollment were identified as study subjects (N=136,372). The aDCSI score (sum of diabetic complication with severity levels, range 0-13) and complication count (sum of diabetic complications, range 0-7) were generated using diagnostic codes for each patient. Poisson model and linear regression model were conducted to predict risk of hospitalization and healthcare costs associated with aDCSI score and count of diabetic complications. RESULTS The aDCSI score (risk ratio 1.51 to 10.32 categorically, and 1.41 linearly) and count of diabetic complications (risk ratio 1.56 to 12.20 categorically, and 1.66 linearly) were significantly positively associated with risk of hospitalization. A one-point increase in the aDCSI score was positively associated with increased healthcare costs. CONCLUSIONS The performance of aDCSI in predicting risk of hospitalization and healthcare cost in the nationally-representative claims database is similar to those reported in the original study. It may serve as an efficient tool for stratifying type 2 diabetic patients for disease management programs and population-based studies.

Abstract
We establish full-wave electromagnetic scattering theory to study the near-field and far-field spectra of radially anisotropic coated nanowires. For coated nanowires containing radially anisotropic core and plasmonic shell, unconventional Fano resonances are predicted due to the interference between dipole cloaking mode and dipole resonant mode. In contrast to Z-shaped Fano profile with small modulation depth for coated nanospheres in Argyropoulos et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 263905 (2012), we predict S-shaped Fano profile with high depth for coated nanowires. An off-resonance field enhancement in the radially anisotropic core is found at the Fano dip, and its' magnitude is approximately the same as that the one at the low-energy resonant wavelength. Furthermore, with our adjustment of the inner size and the permittivity elements of the anisotropic core, tunable Fano-like profiles can be realized. These results may be useful for potential applications in different fields of nanotechnology.

Abstract
AIM: To assess the correlation between the serum hepcidin-25 level and left ventricular mass index.
METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional study conducted between March 2009 and April 2010. Demographic and biochemical data, including the serum hepcidin-25 level, were collected for chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Two-dimensional echocardiography was performed to determine the left ventricle mass (LVM), left ventricular mass index (LVMI), interventricular septum thickness (IVSd), left ventricle posterior wall thickness (LVPW), right ventricular dimension (RVD), left atrium (LA) and ejection fraction (EF).
RESULTS: A total of 146 patients with stage 1 to 5 CKD were enrolled. Serum hepcidin-25 levels were 16.51 ± 5.2, 17.59 ± 5.32, 17.38 ± 6.47, 19.98 ± 4.98 and 22.03 ± 4.8 ng/mL for stage 1 to 5 CKD patients, respectively. Hepcidin-25 level was independently predicted by the serum ferritin level (β = 0.6, P = 0.002) and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (β = -0.48, P = 0.04). There were negative correlations between the serum hepcidin level and the LVM and LVMI (P = 0.04 and P = 0.005, respectively). Systolic blood pressure (BP) was positively correlated with the LVMI (P = 0.005). In the multivariate analysis, a decreased serum hepcidin-25 level was independently associated with a higher LVMI (β = -0.28, 95%CI: -0.48 - -0.02, P = 0.006) after adjusting for body mass index, age and systolic BP.
CONCLUSION: A lower serum hepcidin level is associated with a higher LVMI in CKD patients. Low hepcidin levels may be independently correlated with unfavorable cardiovascular outcomes in this population.

Abstract
Sludge with low organic content always results in an unsatisfactory performance, even failure of anaerobic digestion. The alkaline pretreatment effect on anaerobic digestion of sludge with low organic content has seldom been studied although it gives many benefits for sludge with high organic content. In this study the influence of alkaline pretreatment (pH 10, an effective alkaline pH) on the solubilization and methane production from waste activated sludge (WAS) with low organic content was investigated. Results from biochemical methane potential (BMP) experiments showed that anaerobic biodegradability of WAS was greatly improved by alkaline pretreatment at pH 10. Methane production from the current WAS under conditions of pretreatment time 4 h and digestion time 15 d was 139.6 mL/g VS (volatile solids), much higher than that from the unpretreated WAS with digestion time of 20 d (75.2 mL/g VS). Also, the solubilization of WAS was significantly accelerated by alkaline pretreatment. Mechanism exploration indicated that the general activities of anaerobic microorganisms, specific activities of key enzymes and the amounts of methanogens were enhanced by alkaline pretreatment at pH 10, showing good agreement with methane production.

Abstract
Pancreatic beta cell dysfunction is a hallmark of diabetes. Our previous results have shown that oleanolic acid (OA) has anti-diabetic potential. However, there is little literature reporting the effect of OA on beta cell dysfunction. The present study was designed to investigate the protective effect of OA against lipotoxicity and the underlying mechanisms. Lepr (db/db) diabetic mice were subjected to fasting blood glucose measurement, intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test after the administration of OA for two weeks. Histopathological observation was conducted by HE staining and transmission electron microscopy assay. Pancreatic islets were isolated from db/db diabetic mice and C57BL/6J mice. Palmitic acid (PA) was used to induce lipotoxicity in vitro. Apoptosis was evaluated in pancreatic islets in diabetic mice and in isolated pancreatic islets and beta-TC3 cells by TUNEL assay. Cellular ATP content, mitochondrial function and redox balance were examined. Phosphorylation of c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and the activation of nuclear erythroid factor 2 p45-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling were evaluated by western blotting. In db/db mice, OA significantly protects beta cell function against lipotoxicity, evidenced by inhibition of apoptosis and improvement of glucose tolerance. In cells, OA administration may protect against PA-induced apoptosis and decrease of GSIS, in which process the activation of Nrf2 is essential. Once Nrf2 is activated, OA could induce GCLc expression, promote the production of GSH, and thus inhibit JNK phosphorylation and solid the antioxidant defense of mitochondria, leading to the inhibition of mitochondrial apoptosis. ERK signaling pathway is responsible for OA-induced activation of Nrf2 and the protective effect of OA. Overall, our study enhances the understanding of the protective effect of OA on beta cell and provides clues for further studies on the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
PCDD/Fs are found as impurities in commercial pesticide sodium pentachlorophenol (Na-PCP) salt. We compared, using multivariate logistic regression analysis adjusted for confounding factors, serum PCDD/F levels and biochemical examinations of retired Na-PCP workers and other inhabitants living near a closed Na-PCP plant that discharged PCP-contaminated wastewater into a nearby pond in Tainan, Taiwan. In this cross-sectional study from October 2006 through May 2009, 1167 participants were divided into groups according to their occupational (retired Na-PCP plant workers versus other residents) and dietary exposure (eating polluted fish versus not eating polluted fish) to PCDD/Fs, and a general population from a large-scale survey. Serum PCDD/F levels were significantly different between these groups (range: from 22.9±10.0pg WHO(98)-TEQ(DF) g(-1) lipid in the general population to 109.6±94.5pg WHO(98)-TEQ(DF) g(-1) lipid in retired Na-PCP workers eating polluted seafood; P(trend)<0.001). Distinct patterns of PCDD/Fs congener profiles, showing a significantly higher proportion of 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD, 1,2,3,6,7,8-HxDD, and less 2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF, OCDF, were also found among workers and residents with different serum PCDD/F levels versus the general population. After adjusting for confounding factors, glucose (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 7.22 [95% CI: 4.04-12.90]), triglycerides (AOR 4.31 [95% CI: 2.57-7.22]), blood urea nitrogen (AOR 2.90 [95% CI: 1.58-5.33]), creatine (AOR 5.83 [95% CI: 1.12-30.30]) and total protein (AOR 3.74 [95% CI: 1.91-7.31]) levels in retired workers were significantly higher than in the reference group. Occupational exposure to PCDD/Fs is associated with biochemical abnormalities that may persist for years after serum PCDD/F levels have declined.
