Tailoring of enhanced interfacial polarization in WO3 nanorods grown over reduced graphene oxide synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method

In the present report, well-defined WO₃ nanorods (NRs) and a rGO–WO₃ composite were successfully synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal method.

Semiconductor laser linewidth reduction by six orders of magnitude via delayed optical feedback

We demonstrate a coherence increase by six orders of magnitude of a standard quantum well semiconductor laser. Using a simple, optical-fiber-based feedback scheme, we stabilize the laser in a high-gain mode of a long external cavity. In a modified self-heterodyne measurement, we mix the high-gain mode with a strongly suppressed side mode and obtain an interference linewidth of only 12.6 Hz, corresponding to a decoherence of (3.1±2.9) Hz. In an independent characterization using an etalon, we deduce an upper limit of 300 Hz for the laser linewidth. The laser stably resides in this mode for tens of seconds. Our results agree with theoretical predictions.

Consistency in experiments on multistable driven delay systems

We investigate the consistency properties in the responses of a nonlinear delay optoelectronic intensity oscillator subject to different drives, in particular, harmonic and self-generated waveforms. This system, an implementation of the Ikeda oscillator, is operating in a closed-loop configuration, exhibiting its autonomous dynamics while the drive signals are additionally introduced. Applying the same drive multiple times, we compare the dynamical responses of the optoelectronic oscillator and quantify the degree of consistency among them via their correlation. Our results show that consistency is not restricted to conditions close to the first Hopf bifurcation but can be found in a broad range of dynamical regimes, even in the presence of multistability. Finally, we discuss the dependence of consistency on the nature of the drive signal.

Combined Effects of Neurotrophin Secreting Transplants, Exercise, and Serotonergic Drug Challenge Improve Function in Spinal Rats

Objectives. To determine the effects of neurotrophin-secreting transplants combined with exercise and serotonergic drug challenges on recovery of hindlimb function in rats with midthoracic spinal cord transection injuries. Methods. Spinalized animals received transplants of fibroblasts genetically modified to express brain-derived neurotrophic factor and neurotrophin-3 and daily cycling exercise. Hindlimb movement in an open-field test (BBB) was scored weekly. Serotonin agonists were used monthly to further stimulate motor function. Axonal growth was quantified in the transplant and at L5 using immunocytochemical markers. Weights of hindlimb muscles were used to assess muscle atrophy. Results. Neurotrophin-secreting transplants stimulated axonal growth, and cycling prevented muscle atrophy, but individual treatments did not improve motor scores. Combined treatments resulted in improvements in motor function. Serotonergic agonists further improved function in all groups, and transplant groups with exercise achieved weight-supporting levels following drug treatment. Conclusion. Combined treatments, but not individual treatments, improved hindlimb function.

Bidirectional private key exchange using delay-coupled semiconductor lasers

We experimentally demonstrate a key exchange cryptosystem based on the phenomenon of identical chaos synchronization. In our protocol, the private key is symmetrically generated by the two communicating partners. It is built up from the synchronized bits occurring between two current-modulated bidirectionally coupled semiconductor lasers with additional self-feedback. We analyze the security of the exchanged key and discuss the amplification of its privacy. We demonstrate private key generation rates up to 11  Mbit/s over a public channel.

Highly Strained Heterocycles Constructed from Boron-Boron Multiple Bonds and Heavy Chalcogens

The reactions of a diborene with elemental selenium or tellurium are shown to afford a diboraselenirane or diboratellurirane, respectively. These reactions are reminiscent of the sequestration of subvalent oxygen and nitrogen in the formation of oxiranes and aziridines; however, such reactivity is not known between alkenes and the heavy chalcogens. Although carbon is too electronegative to affect the reduction of elements with lower relative electronegativity, the highly reducing nature of the B-B double bond enables reactions with Se(0) and Te(0) . The capacity of multiple bonds between boron atoms to donate electron density is highlighted in reactions where diborynes behave as nucleophiles, attacking one of the two Te atoms of diaryltellurides, forming salts consisting of diboratellurenium cations and aryltelluride anions.

Transplantation of neural progenitor cells in chronic spinal cord injury

Previous studies demonstrated that neural progenitor cells (NPCs) transplanted into a subacute contusion injury improve motor, sensory, and bladder function. In this study we tested whether transplanted NPCs can also improve functional recovery after chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) alone or in combination with the reduction of glial scar and neurotrophic support. Adult rats received a T10 moderate contusion. Thirteen weeks after the injury they were divided into four groups and received either: 1. Medium (control), 2. NPC transplants, 3. NPC+lentivirus vector expressing chondroitinase, or 4. NPC+lentivirus vectors expressing chondroitinase and neurotrophic factors. During the 8 weeks post-transplantation the animals were tested for functional recovery and eventually analyzed by anatomical and immunohistochemical assays. The behavioral tests for motor and sensory function were performed before and after injury, and weekly after transplantation, with some animals also tested for bladder function at the end of the experiment. Transplant survival in the chronic injury model was variable and showed NPCs at the injury site in 60% of the animals in all transplantation groups. The NPC transplants comprised less than 40% of the injury site, without significant anatomical or histological differences among the groups. All groups also showed similar patterns of functional deficits and recovery in the 12 weeks after injury and in the 8 weeks after transplantation using the Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan rating score, the grid test, and the Von Frey test for mechanical allodynia. A notable exception was group 4 (NPC together with chondroitinase and neurotrophins), which showed a significant improvement in bladder function. This study underscores the therapeutic challenges facing transplantation strategies in a chronic SCI in which even the inclusion of treatments designed to reduce scarring and increase neurotrophic support produce only modest functional improvements. Further studies will have to identify the combination of acute and chronic interventions that will augment the survival and efficacy of neural cell transplants.

Synchronization of Heterogeneous Oscillators by Noninvasive Time-Delayed Cross Coupling

We demonstrate that nonidentical systems, in particular, nonlinear oscillators with different time scales, can be synchronized if a mutual coupling via time-delayed control signals is implemented. Each oscillator settles on an unstable state, say a fixed point or an unstable periodic orbit, with a coupling force which vanishes in the long time limit. We present the underlying theoretical considerations and numerical simulations, and, moreover, demonstrate the concept experimentally in nonlinear electronic oscillators.

Photodissociation dynamics of cyclopropenylidene, c-C3 H2

In this joint experimental and theoretical study we characterize the complete dynamical "life cycle" associated with the photoexcitation of the singlet carbene cyclopropenylidene to the lowest lying optically bright excited electronic state: from the initial creation of an excited-state wavepacket to the ultimate fragmentation of the molecule on the vibrationally hot ground electronic state. Cyclopropenylidene is prepared in this work using an improved synthetic pathway for the preparation of the precursor quadricyclane, thereby greatly simplifying the assignment of the molecular origin of the measured photofragments. The excitation process and subsequent non-adiabatic dynamics have been previously investigated employing time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and are now complemented with high-level ab initio trajectory simulations that elucidate the specific vibronic relaxation pathways. Lastly, the fragmentation channels accessed by the molecule following internal conversion are probed using velocity map imaging (VMI) so that the identity of the fragmentation products and their corresponding energy distributions can be definitively assigned.

Reconfigurable semiconductor laser networks based on diffractive coupling

Networks of optical emitters are highly sought-after, both for fundamental investigations as well as for various technological applications. We introduce and implement a novel scheme, based on diffractive optical coupling, allowing for the coupling of large numbers of optical emitters with adjustable weights. We demonstrate its potential by coupling emitters of a 2D array of semiconductor lasers with significant efficiency.

Experimental Phase-Space Tomography of Semiconductor Laser Dynamics

We perform phase-space tomography of semiconductor laser dynamics by simultaneous experimental determination of optical intensity, frequency, and population inversion with high temporal resolution. We apply this technique to a laser with delayed feedback, serving as prominent example for high-dimensional chaotic dynamics and as model system for fundamental investigations of complex systems. Our approach allows us to explore so far unidentified trajectories in phase space and identify the underlying physical mechanism.

Dynamical properties induced by state-dependent delays in photonic systems

In many dynamical systems and complex networks time delays appear naturally in feedback loops or coupling connections of individual elements. Moreover, in a whole class of systems, these delay times can depend on the state of the system. Nevertheless, so far the understanding of the impact of such state-dependent delays remains poor with a particular lack of systematic experimental studies. Here we fill this gap by introducing a conceptually simple photonic system that exhibits dynamics of self-organised switching between two loops with two different delay times, depending on the state of the system. On the basis of experiments and modelling on semiconductor lasers with frequency-selective feedback mirrors, we characterize the switching between the states defined by the individual delays. Our approach opens new perspectives for the study of this class of dynamical systems and enables applications in which the self-organized switching can be exploited.

Time delays in feedback loops and connections in dynamical systems and complex networks can depend on the state of the system, but these state-dependent delays are poorly understood. Here, the authors use a photonic system to characterize the switching between two loops with different delay times.

Minimal approach to neuro-inspired information processing

To learn and mimic how the brain processes information has been a major research challenge for decades. Despite the efforts, little is known on how we encode, maintain and retrieve information. One of the hypothesis assumes that transient states are generated in our intricate network of neurons when the brain is stimulated by a sensory input. Based on this idea, powerful computational schemes have been developed. These schemes, known as machine-learning techniques, include artificial neural networks, support vector machine and reservoir computing, among others. In this paper, we concentrate on the reservoir computing (RC) technique using delay-coupled systems. Unlike traditional RC, where the information is processed in large recurrent networks of interconnected artificial neurons, we choose a minimal design, implemented via a simple nonlinear dynamical system subject to a self-feedback loop with delay. This design is not intended to represent an actual brain circuit, but aims at finding the minimum ingredients that allow developing an efficient information processor. This simple scheme not only allows us to address fundamental questions but also permits simple hardware implementations. By reducing the neuro-inspired reservoir computing approach to its bare essentials, we find that nonlinear transient responses of the simple dynamical system enable the processing of information with excellent performance and at unprecedented speed. We specifically explore different hardware implementations and, by that, we learn about the role of nonlinearity, noise, system responses, connectivity structure, and the quality of projection onto the required high-dimensional state space. Besides the relevance for the understanding of basic mechanisms, this scheme opens direct technological opportunities that could not be addressed with previous approaches.

Determining the sub-Lyapunov exponent of delay systems from time series

For delay systems the sign of the sub-Lyapunov exponent (sub-LE) determines key dynamical properties. This includes the properties of strong and weak chaos and of consistency. Here we present a robust algorithm based on reconstruction of the local linearized equations of motion, which allows for calculating the sub-LE from time series. The algorithm is inspired by a method introduced by Pyragas for a nondelayed drive-response scheme [K. Pyragas, Phys. Rev. E 56, 5183 (1997)]. In the presented extension to delay systems, the delayed feedback takes over the role of the drive, whereas the response of the low-dimensional node leads to the sub-Lyapunov exponent. Our method is based on a low-dimensional representation of the delay system. We introduce the basic algorithm for a discrete scalar map, extend the concept to scalar continuous delay systems, and give an outlook to the case of a full vector-state system, from which only a scalar observable is recorded.

Consistency properties of a chaotic semiconductor laser driven by optical feedback

We experimentally study consistency properties of a semiconductor laser in response to a coherent optical drive originating from delayed feedback. The laser is connected to a short and a long optical fiber loop, switched such that only one is providing input to the laser at a time. This way, repeating the exact same optical drive twice, we find consistent or inconsistent responses depending on the pump parameter and we relate the kind of response to strong and weak chaos. Moreover, we are able to experimentally determine the sub-Lyapunov exponent, underlying the consistency properties.

Reservoir computing with a single time-delay autonomous Boolean node

We demonstrate reservoir computing with a physical system using a single autonomous Boolean logic element with time-delay feedback. The system generates a chaotic transient with a window of consistency lasting between 30 and 300 ns, which we show is sufficient for reservoir computing. We then characterize the dependence of computational performance on system parameters to find the best operating point of the reservoir. When the best parameters are chosen, the reservoir is able to classify short input patterns with performance that decreases over time. In particular, we show that four distinct input patterns can be classified for 70 ns, even though the inputs are only provided to the reservoir for 7.5 ns.

Molecular-like hierarchical self-assembly of monolayers of mixtures of particles

We present a technique that uses an externally applied electric field to self-assemble monolayers of mixtures of particles into molecular-like hierarchical arrangements on fluid-liquid interfaces. The arrangements consist of composite particles (analogous to molecules) which are arranged in a pattern. The structure of a composite particle depends on factors such as the relative sizes of the particles and their polarizabilities, and the electric field intensity. If the particles sizes differ by a factor of two or more, the composite particle has a larger particle at its core and several smaller particles form a ring around it. The number of particles in the ring and the spacing between the composite particles depend on their polarizabilities and the electric field intensity. Approximately same sized particles form chains (analogous to polymeric molecules) in which positively and negatively polarized particles alternate.

Decomposition of diazomeldrum's acid: a threshold photoelectron spectroscopy study

Derivatives of meldrum's acid are known precursors for a number of reactive intermediates. Therefore, we investigate diazomeldrum's acid (DMA) and its pyrolysis products by photoionization using vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) synchrotron radiation. The threshold photoelectron spectrum of DMA yields an ionization energy (IE) of 9.68 eV. Several channels for dissociative photoionization are observed. The first one is associated with loss of CH3, leading to a daughter ion with m/z = 155. Its appearance energy AE0K was determined to be 10.65 eV by fitting the experimental data using statistical theory. A second parallel channel leads to m/z = 69, corresponding to N2CHCO, with an AE0K of 10.72 eV. Several other channels open up at higher energy, among them the formation of acetone cation, a channel expected to be the result of a Wolff-rearrangement (WR) in the cation. When diazomeldrum's acid is heated in a pyrolysis reactor, three thermal decomposition pathways are observed. The major one is well-known and yields acetone, N2 and CO as consequence of the WR. However, two further channels were identified: The formation of 2-diazoethenone, NNCCO, together with acetone and CO2 as the second channel and E-formylketene (OCCHCHCO), propyne, N2 and O2 as a third one. 2-Diazoethenone and E-formylketene were identified based on their threshold photoelectron spectra and accurate ionization energies could be determined. Ionization energies for several isomers of both molecules were also computed. One of the key findings of this study is that acetone is observed upon decomposition of DMA in the neutral as well as in the ion and both point to a Wolff rearrangement to occur. However, the ion is subject to other decomposition channels favored at lower internal energies.

Autocorrelation properties of chaotic delay dynamical systems: A study on semiconductor lasers

We present a detailed experimental characterization of the autocorrelation properties of a delayed feedback semiconductor laser for different dynamical regimes. We show that in many cases the autocorrelation function of laser intensity dynamics can be approximated by the analytically derived autocorrelation function obtained from a linear stochastic model with delay. We extract a set of dynamic parameters from the fit with the analytic solutions and discuss the limits of validity of our approximation. The linear model captures multiple fundamental properties of delay systems, such as the shift and asymmetric broadening of the different delay echoes. Thus, our analysis provides significant additional insight into the relevant physical and dynamical properties of delayed feedback lasers.

Photoionization and pyrolysis of a 1,4-azaborinine: retro-hydroboration in the cation and identification of novel organoboron ring systems

The photoionization and dissociative photoionization of 1,4-di-tert-butyl-1,4-azaborinine by means of synchrotron radiation and threshold photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy is reported. The ionization energy of the compound was determined to be 7.89 eV. Several low-lying electronically excited states in the cation were identified. The various pathways for dissociative photoionization were modeled by statistical theory, and appearance energies AE0K were obtained. The loss of isobutene in a retro-hydroboration reaction is the dominant pathway, which proceeds with a reverse barrier. Pyrolysis of the parent compound in a chemical reactor leads to the generation of several yet unobserved boron compounds. The ionization energies of the C4 H6 BN isomers 1,2- and 1,4-dihydro-1,4-azaborinine and the C3 H6 BN isomer 1,2-dihydro-1,3-azaborole were determined from threshold photoelectron spectra.

Photodissociation dynamics of propargylene, HCCCH

We report a joint theoretical and experimental study on the photodissociation of the C₃H₂ isomer propargylene, HCCCH, combining velocity map imaging with nonadiabatic surface hopping calculations.

Synthesis of well-dispersed silver nanorods of different aspect ratios and their antimicrobial properties against Gram positive and negative bacterial strains

In the present contribution, we describe the synthesis of highly dispersed silver nanorods (NRs) of different aspect ratios using a chemical route. The shape and size of the synthesized NRs were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and UV-visible spectroscopy. Longitudinal and transverse absorptions bands confirm the rod type structure. The experimentally recorded UV-visible spectra of NRs solutions were fitted by using an expression of the extinction coefficient for rod like nano structures under the dipole approximation. Simulated and experimentally observed UV-visible spectra were compared to determine the aspect ratios (R) of NRs. The average values of R for NR1, NR2 and NR3 solutions are estimated to be 3.0 ± 0.1, 1.8 ± 0.1 and 1.2 ± 0.1, respectively. These values are in good agreement with those obtained by TEM micrographs. The silver NRs of known aspect ratios are used to study antimicrobial activities against B. subtilis (gram positive) and E. coli (gram negative) microbes. We observed that the NRs of intermediate aspect ratio (R = 1.8) have greater antimicrobial effect against both, B. subtilis (gram positive) and E. coli (gram negative). The NRs of aspect ratio, R = 3.0 has better antimicrobial activities against gram positive than on the gram negative.

Relation between delayed feedback and delay-coupled systems and its application to chaotic lasers

We present a systematic approach to identify the similarities and differences between a chaotic system with delayed feedback and two mutually delay-coupled systems. We consider the general case in which the coupled systems are either unsynchronized or in a generally synchronized state, in contrast to the mostly studied case of identical synchronization. We construct a new time-series for each of the two coupling schemes, respectively, and present analytic evidence and numerical confirmation that these two constructed time-series are statistically equivalent. From the construction, it then follows that the distribution of time-series segments that are small compared to the overall delay in the system is independent of the value of the delay and of the coupling scheme. By focusing on numerical simulations of delay-coupled chaotic lasers, we present a practical example of our findings.
