Abstract
We developed a robust and low-cost array of virtual Frisch-grid CdZnTe detectors coupled to a front-end readout application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for spectroscopy and imaging of gamma rays. The array operates as a self-reliant detector module. It is comprised of 36 close-packed 6 × 6 × 15 mm(3) detectors grouped into 3 × 3 sub-arrays of 2 × 2 detectors with the common cathodes. The front-end analog ASIC accommodates up to 36 anode and 9 cathode inputs. Several detector modules can be integrated into a single- or multi-layer unit operating as a Compton or a coded-aperture camera. We present the results from testing two fully assembled modules and readout electronics. The further enhancement of the arrays' performance and reduction of their cost are possible by using position-sensitive virtual Frisch-grid detectors, which allow for accurate corrections of the response of material non-uniformities caused by crystal defects.

Abstract
Aerobic activated sludge granules are dense, spherical biofilms which can strongly improve purification efficiency and sludge settling in wastewater treatment processes. In this study, the structure and development of different granule types were analyzed. Biofilm samples originated from lab-scale sequencing batch reactors which were operated with malthouse, brewery, and artificial wastewater. Scanning electron microscopy, light microscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy together with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) allowed insights into the structure of these biofilms. Microscopic observation revealed that granules consist of bacteria, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), protozoa and, in some cases, fungi. The biofilm development, starting from an activated sludge floc up to a mature granule, follows three phases. During phase 1, stalked ciliated protozoa of the subclass Peritrichia, e.g., Epistylis spp., settle on activated sludge flocs and build tree-like colonies. The stalks are subsequently colonized by bacteria. During phase 2, the ciliates become completely overgrown by bacteria and die. Thereby, the cellular remnants of ciliates act like a backbone for granule formation. During phase 3, smooth, compact granules are formed which serve as a new substratum for unstalked ciliate swarmers settling on granule surfaces. These mature granules comprise a dense core zone containing bacterial cells and EPS and a loosely structured fringe zone consisting of either ciliates and bacteria or fungi and bacteria. Since granules can grow to a size of up to several millimeters in diameter, we developed and applied a modified FISH protocol for the study of cryosectioned biofilms. This protocol allows the simultaneous detection of bacteria, ciliates, and fungi in and on granules.

Abstract
Ciliates are known to directly influence the performance of wastewater treatment plants mainly by feeding on suspended particles. By monitoring two lab-scale sequencing batch biofilm reactors (SBBR), one filled with expanded shale (clay spheres), the other with "Kaldnes" particles (PE-carriers), the succession of biofilm communities with special emphasis on ciliates was monitored for one year. Ciliates were identified and quantified at the species level and compared to rotifer and nematode abundances. Members of the subclass Peritrichia clearly dominated the community of protozoa. Epistylis cf. coronata and Opercularia asymmetrica were the dominant species within this group. The tree-like structure of their colonies provided a distinctive augmentation of the area available for bacterial colonization. The flux of water, produced by E. cf. coronata due to cilia motility, has been visualized and measured by video processing. This flux of water was still measurable at distances > 500 microm and maximum water currents raised up to 180 microm s(-1). Therefore, the role of ciliates is not only restricted to the ingestion of bacteria and suspended particles. They also alter water flux and carry nutrients to the inner parts of the biofilm. Thus, monitoring biofilm formation in wastewater treatment plants should always consider the impact of protists such as ciliates.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to assess dental hygienists' general knowledge of menopause and its possible oral manifestations. Demographic descriptors, including education level, course work, and menopausal status, were examined to determine their influence on knowledge levels. METHOD A 27-item, self-administered survey was mailed to a random sample of Connecticut dental hygienists. Frequency distributions and inferential statistics (ANOVA, t-test) were used for data analysis. RESULTS Fifty-four percent of respondents scored 75 percent or higher in general knowledge about menopause. Seven percent scored the same about its oral effects. Educational level and dental hygiene college curricula influenced the oral effect scores. Dental hygienists with bachelor degrees exhibited more knowledge than those with certificate/associate degrees. Those who had taken a college course on the oral effects of menopause had more knowledge than those who had not. CONCLUSION The findings suggest that dental hygienists need more education about menopause and its related oral conditions. Those with additional knowledge might be more able to provide comprehensive care to menopausal and post-menopausal dental patients. Future research using larger sample sizes may enhance the education of dental hygienists in this area.

Abstract
Functionalized 2-alkyl derivatives of inosinic acid have been synthesized to serve as reversible as well as irreversible inhibitors of the human type II enzyme inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase. These compounds were designed to react with Cys-331 of the enzyme to form covalent bonds so as to interfere with the normal enzyme mechanism which involves attack of Cys-331 at C-2 of the substrate. Mass spectrometric analysis of the reaction products after enzymatic degradation confirmed the appropriateness of the inhibitor design.
