Abstract
Activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3) is a stress-induced transcription factor that has been shown to repress inflammatory gene expression in multiple cell types and diseases. However, little is known about the roles and mechanisms of ATF3 in liver ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI). In warm and cold liver IRI models, we showed that ATF3 deficiency significantly increased ischemia/reperfusion (IR)-stressed liver injury, as evidenced by increased serum alanine aminotransferase levels, histological liver damage, and hepatocellular apoptosis. These may correlate with inhibition of the intrahepatic nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-related factor 2/heme oxygenase-1 (NRF2/HO-1) signaling pathway leading to enhancing Toll-like receptor 4/nuclear factor kappa beta (TLR4/NF-κB) activation, pro-inflammatory programs and macrophage/neutrophil trafficking, while simultaneously repressing anti-apoptotic molecules in ischemic liver. Interestingly, activation of NRF2/HO-1 signaling using an NRF2 activator, oltipraz (M2), during hepatic IRI-rescued ATF3 anti-inflammatory functions in ATF3-deficient mice. For in vitro studies, ATF3 ablation in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMs) depressed levels of NRF2/HO-1 and PI3K/AKT, resulting in enhanced TLR4/NF-κB activation. Pretreatment of LPS-stimulated BMMs with M2 increased NRF2/HO-1 expression, promoted PI3K/AKT, which in turn suppressed TLR4/NF-κB-mediated proinflammatory mediators. Thus, our results first demonstrate ATF3-mediated NRF2/HO-1 signaling in the regulation of TLR4-driven inflammatory responses in IR-stressed livers. Our findings provide a rationale for a novel therapeutic strategy for managing IR-induced liver injury.

Abstract
Insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) exerts anti-proliferative or pro-apoptotic effects through IGF-dependent as well as IGF-independent mechanisms in vitro. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between genetic variants in IGFBP-3 (rs2270628) and the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in a Chinese Han population. Five hundred ESCC cases and 500 cancer-free controls of the Chinese Han population were involved in this study. The IGFBP-3 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs2270628 was genotyped and the estimated adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for its association with the risk of ESCC were determined using unconditional logistic regression analysis. Compared with the rs2270628 CC genotype, TT genotype was associated with a significantly increased ESCC risk with OR (95%CI) of 2.07 (1.05-4.09), but CT genotype was not (OR = 1.25, 95%CI =0.94-1.66). IGFBP-3 SNP rs2270628 may contribute to the risk of ESCC in the Chinese Han population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As a product of electronic health, teledermatology is a cost-effective means of improving access to care, facilitating specialist consultations, and supporting patient self-management. Even so, use of traditional teledermatology services is limited by infrastructure and costs in the form of digital cameras, computers, and Internet access. METHODS Considering the significant improvement in smartphone camera resolution and the rapidly increasing number of physicians using smartphones, we explored the use of smartphones as reliable, effective clinical tools in store-and-forward teledermatology. We describe the technical specifications of modern smartphone cameras, the widespread use of smartphones by physicians, and the advantages of smartphones over traditional camera and Internet teledermatology, and we propose recommendations as to how mobile teledermatology may be more effectively used in modern dermatologic practice.

Abstract
Polarizers are widely used to change the polarization of millimeter waves on the electron cyclotron resonance heating and current drive (ECRH and CD) systems. A new method based on the coordinate transformation and the Fourier expansion (the so-called C-method) has been developed for design of polarizers on the HL-2A ECRH and CD systems. This method transforms the grating problem to an eigenvalue problem, making it easy and clear to understand and solve. The comparison between the C-method, the integral method, and the low power test results is presented. It indicates that the C-method can be considered as a rigorous numerical method for the design of polarizers. Finally, two polarizers were designed based on the C-method which can be used together to achieve almost arbitrary polarization.

Abstract
Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are ubiquitous enzymes in animals and plants, and they are multifunctional proteins encoded by a large gene family. GSTs are involved in response to the oxidative stress including drought, salt, heavy metals, and so on. Under oxidative stress, the excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) induce an increase in GST levels, and then the GSTs metabolize the toxic products of lipid peroxidation, damaged DNA and other molecules. Previously, a full-length cDNA of a novel zeta GST gene, PpGST, was characterized from fruit of Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai cv Huobali. In the present study, a constitutive plant expression vector of PpGSTwas constructed and transferred into tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv Xanthi) to verify the function of PpGST. As a result, the PpGSTgene was successfully integrated into the genome of the transgenic tobacco lines and expressed as expected in the transformants through Southern blotting and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis. Growth of T1 generation plants of PpGST transgenic lines and WT under non-stressful conditions was similar, however, the transgenic tobacco lines showed relatively normal growth under drought, NaCl, and cadmium (Cd) stresses. Furthermore, the T1 transgenic tobacco lines showed significantly slower superoxide anion production rate than the WT under abiotic stress. Simultaneously, the MDA content of each T1 transgenic tobacco plant was only slightly increased and significantly lower than that of the WT under drought, salt and Cd stress. Together with the GST activity of the transgenic tobacco lines, which was significantly increased under stressful conditions, as compared with that in WT, overexpression of PpGSTin tobacco enhanced the tolerance of transgenic tobacco lines to oxidative damage caused by drought, NaCl, and Cd stresses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, procalcitonin has emerged as a promising marker for bacterial infection, with the high sensitivity and specificity. CASE PRESENTATION This report presents a 76-year-old woman with fever, vomiting and diarrhea. The clinical and laboratory examination revealed that the patient had a suspected serious intestinal infection and sepsis. The extremely high level of procalcitonin and positive blood culture result confirmed our diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS Early identification of severe sepsis sometimes is very difficult. Procalcitonin is a useful tool in the early diagnosis of sepsis, differentiating from other inflammatory syndrome. The high PCT level (10 ng/ml) in this case could suggest serious bacterial infection and sepsis, and also predicts mortality and worse outcome.

Abstract
Background: Systemic antibiotics are an effective treatment for acne vulgaris. However, intolerable side effects may invariably occur. Objective: To determine whether probiotics reduce the side effects imparted by systemic antibiotics while working synergistically with the latter in treating inflammatory acne. Methods: Forty-five 18- to 35-year-old females were randomly assigned to one of three arms in this prospective, open-label study. Group A received probiotic supplementation, whereas group B received only minocycline. Group C was treated with both probiotic and minocycline. Clinical and subjective assessments were completed at baseline and during the 2-, 4-, 8-, and 12-week follow-up visits. Results: All patients demonstrated a significant improvement in total lesion count 4 weeks after treatment initiation ( p < .001), with continued improvement seen with each subsequent follow-up visit ( p < .01). At the 8- and 12-week follow-up visits, group C had a significant decrease in total lesion count versus groups A ( p < .001) and B ( p < .01). Two patients (13%) from group B failed to complete the study secondary to vaginal candidiasis. Conclusion: Probiotics may be considered a therapeutic option or adjunct for acne vulgaris by providing a synergistic antiinflammatory effect with systemic antibiotics while also reducing potential adverse events secondary to chronic antibiotic use.
